The first string units take a handful of snaps against each other every day at the end of practice and when doing situational drills (red zone, goal line, two-minute). Positions groups will go against each other by depth chart, too (starting receivers against starting corners, starting O-line vs. starting D-line). I'm pretty sure the coaches are fully aware of what matchups they like to have in practice in order to give everyone the best looks.

I went back and forth about whether or not to include this, but I guess I asked it, so ... here it is:
MGoQuestion: Brady said he thought the game plan was correct, but hindsight is always 20/20. Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?
"I won't answer that question. I won't answer it. That's a loaded question. There's no way to answer that. Obviously we thought we were doing what was best. Looking back with 20/20 [hindsight] has an effect on Nebraska. It has no effect on Michigan State."

I've thought about attributing other reporters, but I decided against it because people are sensitive about these things. A great question to one person may seem like a stupid question to someone else. Plus most of them are not there looking for penetrating and intellectual discussions about football. They're there to get quotes for their stories, and sometimes coaches answer crappy questions more willingly than good ones.
Anyway, the guy who asked that question was Craig Ross, who is the man.

|1 year 17 weeks ago||Sorry, I should have||
Sorry, I should have clarified: 2nd best backup. Glasgow has been taken snaps at both left guard and center and is better suited for guard than Braden. In fact there has been word percolating from practice that Glasgow managed to execute a reach block effectively. Anyway, I think the rationale for moving Braden to tackle was because 1) tackle is his ultimately destination, and Michigan is short on tackles next year, 2) Bryant is a better guard and is better at pulling, and 3) Glasgow can backup at left guard if center doesn't work out.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Yeah there was some||
Yeah there was some reshuffling because of Bryant's absence. I'm just saying that Braden hasn't practiced at guard since Bryant took the spot about a week ago. With Bryant out I'm sure Braden is at least the 2nd best option at left guard. He did spend most of spring practice there, after all.

|1 year 17 weeks ago||No. I was asking about ball||
No. I was asking about ball placement. Previously Borges instructed all his QBs to err on the side of overthrowing his receivers to avoid jump ball situations. As we all saw in 2011, a lot of underthrown balls ended up being big plays because our receivers were so good at outjumping DBs. Borges said that made him rethink the ball placement philosophy a bit. I was just wondering if he still felt that way.

I left out a bunch of details sort of on purpose. Seth and I wrote a 3,000-word ND preview for HTTV so I thought I'd make the blog post a little briefer.
But since you're not satisfied, here is what we wrote for the WR's and RB's (keep in mind this was written before the Golson news):
"Having a bunch of dual-threat quarterbacks is probably a good thing for them, however, because the talent at the receiver position is trending down. Biletnikoff, I mean, Mackey Awardwinning tight-end/wide-receiver-in-disguise Tyler Eifert (50 rec, 685 yards, 4 TDs) is gone, leaving Notre Dame without their number one downfield threat. They do return senior slot receiver T.J. Jones (50 rec, 649 yards, 4 TDs) and junior wideout DaVaris Daniels (31 rec, 490
yards), both of whom will be heavy contributors. Of the two, Jones is the proven commodity, and the scuttlebutt in South Bend indicates that Daniels, who’s 6’2 and fairly fast, has a much higher ceiling if he can work out some of the inconsistency in his game.
It’s completely possible that the ongoing quarterback situation has masked the true potential of the receivers, and one or both could break out in 2013. They kind of have to, because behind them is a lot of broken bones, empty dorm rooms, and freshmen. Highly touted recruits Davonte Neal and Justin Ferguson both transferred over the offseason, and no one else on the roster has had significant playing time. The Irish might have to rely on a pair of early enrollees in James Onwualu and Corey Robinson to mitigate the situation. Team Swiss Army Knife C.J. Prosise was moved to slot receiver in spring after playing safety last year (as well as outside linebacker, dime back, kick returner, tight end, special teams gunner, fry cutter, and can opener).
But hey, that’s okay. Because Notre Dame is returning a deep stable of running backs in every variety that will be able to grind and slash the opposition into oblivion. Nope. Just kidding. Similar to situation at receiver, it looks as though the Irish are a bit lacking in this department. Gone: Theo Riddick (190 carries, 917 yards, 5 TDs) and Cierre Wood (114 carries, 742 yards, 4 TDs), who accounted for more than 80 percent of Notre Dame’s rushing output. Returning: sophomore George Atkinson III (44 carries, 317 yards, 5 TDs) is a 6’1, 190-lb slasher. He has good vision and could be deadly in the open field, but his ability to carry the ball 15-20 times a game is a serious question mark. If that’s a negative, Notre Dame turns to a roster of parts much like Michigan’s spring depth chart. Of that pile the Justice Hayes-like object is junior Cam McDaniel, who saw action at corner last year and was recipient of a fair amount of spring hype."

Sorry about that. It's a half-assed attempt to carry over a joke from last season, when I put goats in the banner to denote losses to Michigan State and Iowa. Since you put in the effort to type a 279-word comment, here is my response:
1) The questioner was me, as denoted by "MGoQuestion."
2) The question was not a criticism of Hagerup nor of any particular plays from last game. If you watched the first two games you'd notice that Michigan's punts have not been covered well. This is not an assumption or a pre-existing bias. Hoke pretty much said it himself. Brian and I just wanted to know what he thought the issue was and how he wanted to resolve it.
3) Yes, people ask about punting all the time, but the questions in the past have been more along the lines of "who is punting better -- Hagerup or Wile?"
4) I am really lazy, though. I also hate thinking. You got me there.

|2 years 22 weeks ago||Meyer hasn't made a final||
Meyer hasn't made a final decision on Klein, so I'm not making an accusation yet. If he stays firm on Klein's status, good for him. He has values after all. Woo.
I admit I didn't know about some of the info you just mentioned. I promise you I wasn't withholding anything. Either way, it doesn't really change my stance. Meyer should just be consistent, period. When a player runs into trouble with the law, Meyer should make his own judgments before legal proceedings (I don't endorse this) or wait to make a final decision after legal proceedings (I do endorse this). It would be suspect to do both, especially when whichever action he takes would coincidentally benefit his program in another way.
|2 years 22 weeks ago||Haha, thanks for retracting||
Haha, thanks for retracting the "knob" comment. Now that my tears are dry, we can talk.
If Meyer can judge the first two cases before hearing what the legal system has to say, he can do so for the third. So why is he now leaning on the legal system? Though I do support waiting to make a final decision about whether to kick a player off the team until some kind of verdict has been reached, it's awfully suspicious that Meyer has backed down somewhat from his heavyhanded way of dealing with Clarke and Gambrell to give Klein a chance to rejoin the team. It was advantageous for him to be heavyhanded with Clarke and Gambrell because of recruiting. It is now advantageous for him to be slightly more lenient to Klein due to roster depth. That's the context I'm looking at. Yes, it's cynical. I'm cynical.
Holy crap, I'm cynical...
I never said there wasn't a difference between an indefinite suspension and getting kicked off the team. For example: I think Stoneburner's and Mewhort's indefinite suspensions are a joke. I think it will be significantly more difficult for Klein to ever see the field, if he ever does get reinstated. But my point is that, at the very least, the chance to see the field exists for him. It didn't exist for Clarke and Gambrell.
|2 years 22 weeks ago||I actually couldn't find what||
I actually couldn't find what happened in Gambrell's case, but Clarke pleaded not guilty.
It's completely possible the charges were overblown. As I said in the post, I think the better way to handle this would have been to dole out a middle-ground punishment for the arrest and the initial charge. At the conclusion of the trial, the school can choose to take more action if necessary. My argument is that it's almost too late for Meyer to do this because he didn't take this approach to begin with for Gambrell and Clarke, and I think that his reason for not doing so was because it was advantageous to dismiss them from the team because of the recruiting crunch at the time.
|2 years 22 weeks ago||To me, Gambrell, Clarke, and||
To me, Gambrell, Clarke, and Klein are the same issue. All three "violated team rules." Meyer kicked Gambrell and Clarke off the team, no questions asked. He kicked Klein off the team, but is now leaving the door open for reinstatement. Why is Klein any different?
The difference is that Gambrell and Clarke's dismissal helped with the recruitment of Armani Reeves. Reinstating Klein, as you know, would help with depth. Dismissing Klein initially made it seem like Meyer was being consistent in his punishment, but it's an empty gesture if Klein is ultimately re-evaluated and reinstated.
So yes. If that is the outcome, then Urban Meyer is bad, and I'm going to mock that decision.

|2 years 23 weeks ago||6-6 could be pessimistic. I||
6-6 could be pessimistic. I was thinking about pegging them at 7-5, but last year's Iowa team went 7-5 in the regular season, and they were a better team than they will be this year. Granted, a couple of their losses were close/to Minnesota, so maybe they were an 8-4/9-3 team last year, but I see 7-5 being the ceiling for this year's Iowa team, not the expected value. Especially if Iowa loses a lot of games early and morale starts to drop, 5-7 isn't out of the question.
The main reason I think their record will suffer is because of defense, not offense. It was fairly mediocre last year, and I don't think they have much talent to replace Mike Daniels or Broderick Binns. Their situation is kind of like Michigan's, but while Michigan loses three important defensive linemen, it's returning the entire back seven. Iowa doesn't have that luxury.
These previews are admittedly way too early. I will gladly change my predictions for any of these teams once the season starts (that's what Opponent Watch is for, I guess) and we actually have something real to talk about.
For now, my handwaving opinion is that Iowa will lose a bunch of games.

Your points are all valid, but I'm giving Iowa the benefit of the doubt. I didn't think Reiff was as impressive as everyone made him out to be, and even with him gone, the Iowa folks think they have a good replacement in Brandon Scherff. Offensive line is Ferentz's expertise, so I'll take their word for it. As far as receivers go, Keenan Davis will be the go-to. He was a highly regarded receiver out of high school and had good production even while playing second fiddle to McNutt. Having Fiedeorowicz who's reputedly a big pass catching threat will help their receiving, too.
That leaves the running game. Yeah, if the running game chokes then Vandenberg will be in a tough spot, so we'll see if any of their fourth-string guys are any good.
Anyway, it'll definitely be interesting to see what happens with them.

Hasn't been announced yet. I'll post a thread when the email goes out.
If you want Denard's signature I recommend showing up very early. Unless they change the rules this year regarding pictures and dilly-dallying, Denard won't be giving out more than 100 signatures, if that. If you're not lined up within 50 feet of the gate, you'll probably miss him.

MaxEx's defense looked lazy in coverage. Bailey was almost always open. Even when he was covered, the DB's lacked the ability to make a play on the ball.

Right-o. Martinez's ability to make the right reads in the option game will carry their offense much further than how pretty his throws are. While his accuracy is important, missing a wide open receiver in ther system is less detrimental than mising a receiver in coverage.

Haha thanks for reading! I swear once this series ends I'll have more interesting stuff to write about.
I was deciding between the two and ultimately felt that the Michigan game was bigger for them than Illinois. Persa made his first appearance of the season against Illinois so I don't think they were that confident that he was 100% just yet. Also, I felt like getting blown out in the second half against Michigan at home was worse vs. at least having some sort of retort against Illinois on the road.
As to which one was more soul crushing, it might be a tie. I think there's some sort of rivalry between Northwestern and Illinois, but the build-up to the Michigan game was bigger, at least from what I read.

I should have clarified -- it was a No. 1 jersey for the scout team. This photo was taken during practice before the EMU game, although EMU doesn't have any receivers that wear No. 1. So who knows.

There were some charges, but I wouldn't go that far. A lot of crap went down, others were involved, and I've been told that there are several conflicting accounts of the incident.
I know that's kind of vague, and I apologize. Maybe the story will be told someday, but it's not mine to tell. I just want to make it clear that any speculation about the situation is going to be unfair, so we should probably abstain from that.

For IMMEDIATE Release
Wide Receiver Darryl Stonum Dismissed from U-M Football Team
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke announced on Tuesday (Jan. 17) that wide receiver Darryl Stonum has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules.
"I love Darryl and wish him nothing but the absolute best," Hoke said. "However, there is a responsibility and a higher standard you must be accountable to as a University of Michigan football student-athlete. That does not and will not change. It's unfortunate because I believe he has grown a great deal as a person since the beginning of the season. My hope is that maturing process continues."
Stonum started 25 of 36 career games at U-M, catching 76 passes for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns. He also returned 62 kickoffs for 1,538 yards and holds the single-season kickoff return mark with 39 returns for 1,001 yards in 2009. Stonum redshirted in 2011.
"I appreciate everything the University of Michigan, Dave Brandon and Coach Hoke have done for me," said Stonum. "I look forward to continuing my football career down the road, but more importantly, right now I'm focused on graduating from Michigan this Spring. I understand only I am responsible for my actions. I'm sad about how all of this turned out, but I completely understand. I love this school and my team and will miss them all greatly. But I'll always be a Wolverine. I know I have grown and matured as a person over the last nine months, and I will continue to learn and grow every day. I want to thank everyone for all of their support, and I hope they will support me in the future."

Also, about the body language -- Mattison was pretty annoyed, not at the question, but more that the reporter asked again after he had made it clear he didn't want to talk about it. The exchange went something like this (paraphrased):
Q: Greg, talk about Urban and Ohio State.
Mattison: "I don't want to talk about it. Let's talk about Michigan."
Q: Do you feel like it gives you an advantage since you've worked with him?
Mattison: "I Just said I don't want to talk about it." (glare)

The goal of these types of questions is to understand how Borges' offense is supposed to work. It helps us understand how the play is designed and also helps with the UFRs. We try to avoid singling out players or saying they messed up, but in this case it wasn't clear just looking at the film who was supposed to be doing what.

A few things (for those of you who are still reading this comment thread):
- the technical questions that sound smart are mostly from Brian so that he can verify what he's seeing while he watches the film and does the UFRs. I rewatch those plays just to make sure I know what I'm asking about, but don't give me too much credit for those.
- these types of questions are a break from the normal flow of these pressers, as I'm sure you can tell. Not many of these quotes are useful for their stories, so I guess as long as I have just a couple, they're not so much annoyed as they are amused.
- the atmosphere at the press conferences is interesting and not what I expected going in. I'm not sure I can describe it succinctly here. Maybe one day I'll write a recap of what it's like to be an MGoReporter.
