It's possible that's what they wanted him to do what he did but you should offer a reason if that's the case.
Maybe the coaches wanted Bolden to get out of his lane and get blown up on blocks. We don't know.

|1 week 4 days ago||Right. What does the media||
Right. What does the media have to do with how a coach is perceived? Calling it relatively minor is ridiculous. It was just as much of a PR storm as the Morris debacle. I'm not at all saying RR doesn't deserve a lot of the blame for screwing up here, even though some here do make it sound like an evil plot by Carr and his former players, and even without Casteel his defenses shouldn't have been as bad as they were (at least not continually), but it's just wrong to say it was all on him. Not saying you disagree with this, but I just wanna say that RR is going to get back to a big program at some point, probably sooner rather than later, and I bet that program is going to be damn good.
Uh, maybe you're just being obtuse, but the point about the former players isn't that the lack of support somehow traveled back in time to harm RR(!?!?), but what they didn't do when RR was here. Maybe that didn't affect the team. Maybe it did. But if you're claiming it didn't have any effect on the morale or performance of the team, then you have to admit the former players showing up to support the team like before the PSU game couldn't have had any effect either.
|1 week 4 days ago||Well obviously he couldn't||
Well obviously he couldn't for a lot of the PSU game and some others, but I'd think he actually wouldn't get hit as hard running usually compared to just standing in the pocket and having guys launch at him.

Right because Braylon killed a dude. What's the worst he had done at that point? Complained about a lack of playing time?
I wasn't bashing Gardner. Just that even as someone who wants Hoke and Brandon gone, it's getting tiring hearing personal attacks and hyperbole like the comment I was responding to. As if Hoke would kick Gardner off the team for no reason. Anyway, just because Gardner's a good guy doesn't mean he might not have butted heads with Hoke when he was hired. Maybe Gilmore was wrong, but later in this thread, uncleFred said (no idea what's up with the formatting):
"Gardner has said that he had some attitude issues much earlier. At some point, according to him, as he got to know Hoke better he bought into what the coaches were trying to do. Not surprising that a highly ranked dual threat QB might have some reservations about a coaching change to a coach with a very different philosophy. Equally unsurprising that a guy like Hoke might think it best for a talented player who is resistant to the direction of the program might be better off elsewhere."

There can be a transition period, you know? For all the shit Borges took, usually rightfully so, it's not like he just completely got rid of Denard as a runner, like we've done with Gardner, likely to the demise of Hoke's tenure here.
People keep thinking the offense was bad in 2008 just because it was a spread, as if the lack of talent had nothing to do with it. The defense is still young, the O-line should be awesome next year with good coaching, Morris is way more talented than Sheridan or Threet were, etc.
|1 week 4 days ago||The SEC was almost undefeated||
The SEC was almost undefeated non-conference. Yes, Missouri lost to Indiana, but they also just got destroyed by Georgia. I can't think of any really marquee matchups, but some SEC teams beat some decent teams out of conference.
The craziest thing about Miss St. this year is how none of these last 3 games have been nailbiters. The Auburn game was competitive of course, but they still won by what? 18? They destroyed TA&M. The LSU game was a blowout until they let their guard down too, right?
Hell, I'm almost worried they'll be too good and Mullen will wonder why he has to go anywhere else. I'm sure for the long-term he's better off elsewhere but it's one thing if you're doing very well in a lower-tier conference and maxing out, but if you can get into the playoffs now, what do you really need another program for? It's never made sense that Mississippi hasn't any good programs anyway considering the talent base.

|2 weeks 3 days ago||"'everyone is doing it' is a||
"'everyone is doing it' is a poor argument, too."
I think the argument is everyone is doing it and doing well with it. Alabama is difficult to judge because they're the most talented team in the country thanks to recruiting and oversigning. I don't remember Brian ever saying he has a problem with a triple option anyway, but sure, GT is 5-0 right now, but they've been thoroughly mediocre behind him except I think that one year where they did quite well (in a weak ACC). Also, Stanford's offense is abysmal. It worked pretty well when you have a guy like Luck, but they weren't shattering any records either (though tempo inflates how good an offense is). Here's a quote from Stewart Mandel about Patterson this week:
"Gary Patterson scoffs at the notion that it must have been hard for the longtime TCU head coach to completely change his offensive scheme after 14 years at the helm. If anything, people underestimated how much it went against the defensive-minded coach’s philosophy to install an up-tempo, wide-open offense.
“It’s been 33 years of play-action, run-type offenses, so this wasn’t just a ‘since I’ve been here at TCU’ type of thing,” said Patterson, formerly an assistant on a team that ran the split-back veer and, for one season at Navy, the triple-option. “You watch most places that have gone to this [offense] in some way, they have not played as good a defense.”
But after ranking 103rd nationally in total offense last season while suffering his first losing record (4-8) since 2004, Patterson sought a way to level the playing field in the conference TCU joined two years ago, the Big 12. So he hired co-offensive coordinators Doug Meachem from Houston and Sonny Cumbie from Texas Tech to install the same Air Raid-style offense that conference foes Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Baylor run.
The new-look Horned Frogs had their national coming out in Saturday’s 37-33 upset of then fourth-ranked Oklahoma. Quarterback Trevone Boykin, a junior formerly seen as a liability who has transformed himself under Cumbie’s mentorship, torched the Sooners for 318 yards on 20 completions, including two long touchdown passes."
Aren't NFL offenses now kind of passing spreads? Not sure why Brian talks about his problems with a pro-style offense. His problem is an under center team depending on a mooseback and a QB with no legs. Isn't Bielema doing just fine with a manball offense? I don't know his offense well, but it's not a spread n shred.
Also, what's the difference between a bootleg and a waggle?

There are some other weird ones like a county near Chicago where 5% like Texas for some reason.
Still cool to see. It's interesting that besides Lansing, State is more popular in the Traverse City area.
In Gilpin County, CO, it says Michigan is the most popular team.
Surprised how Oregon is more popular than Stanford or Cal immediately outside of San Fran. Stanford doesn't even come in 2nd in the surrounding counties.
Check out the counties in a state with no football powers like ND. It's a total hodgepodge.
NC is probably the most divided state. A bunch of programs but none of them good enough to dominate large swaths of territory.
Solely looking at the size of where they're first, Oregon has the largest footprint. They own Oregon, and half of California and Montana each.

Ugh. I downvoted your first post because I don't want anyone saying fuck Michigan on here, but it's hard to disagree with what you just said.
I will point out one thing though. Brian mentioned taking Denard out in an important game for the 2nd half because of a possible concussion, which I don't remember but I'm guessing he's right. However, I'm pretty sure there was something in RR's first year at Arizona where he left a QB in who seemed to have concussion symtpoms as well.
This is actually far more deplorable than what Hoke did. The guy was obviously hit in the head and then started puking, which is one sign of a concussion. Definitely no way to claim they didn't know what had happened. He played on after Arizona took a timeout. I think he got taken out after they scored a TD with him in the game. Changed my mind. I don't want RR back.

Right. Here. Not at WV or Arizona.
|3 weeks 6 hours ago||He was allowed but they||
He was allowed but they wouldn't pay him enough to make him leave WV. I believe Casteel stayed there until RR got hired at Zona. I would bet getting enough money for a good DC was something RR made sure of when he signed with them. Don't remember the details about how much Casteel was getting at WV and all that. Then when Hoke got hired they paid high salaries to Borges and Mattison. Of course, Brandon made that hire. Martin was the one who hired Rodriguez, so that's not on Brandon.
|3 weeks 6 hours ago||RR made some mistakes, but he||
RR made some mistakes, but he also didn't get a fair shot when we were too damn cheap to hire Casteel and didn't give him a 4th year. Not saying he would have succeeded if all that happened, but I think he'd still be here and doing well. Would have been nice to give him the chance.
His WVU teams during his tenure were overall better than Carr's teams. His Arizona team would destroy us now. He turned WVU into a national power and that might happen at Arizona too. Arizona. Seeing as he did so well before us and after us, with 2 mediocre programs, maybe it wasn't all his fault.

Even if we're going to hire Harbaugh, it's not like it'd happen midseason.

It is the straw that broke the camel's back. That's why he's wrong about it being a witch hunt. It's a totally rational response to call for a coach's head when said coach is terrible at coaching.
Also, this wouldn't be much of a story if Hoke and Brandon didn't completely mishandle the response to it.
|3 weeks 22 hours ago||Some people have been over||
Some people have been over the line for sure, but your comment is so tone deaf.
First, people aren't just saying their input lies in the fact that they pay money. Fans are the ones going to the games and cheering. The fans are just as much a part of the program as the players. Michigan without the fans is just a game of backyard football. Also, a lot (most?) of the people here went to Michigan, have degrees from Michigan, and spent 4 great years in Ann Arbor.
Also, regarding the coaching, SCOREBOARD. Sure, Hoke knows way more about football than us. And sure, a lot of people talk out their ass about what precisely is wrong with the coaching. But Nick Saban also knows a lot about football. The thing is, Saban doesn't get pounded by mediocre teams like Utah and Minnesota at home. I was defending the OL coaching last year because of the inexperience. This team is still young, but there are a lot of young teams out there who would kill for our talent doing far better. Like Brian mentioned, Arkansas is in year 2 of their MANBALL overhaul after being terrible and they would absolutely destroy us right now. I didn't expect us to get a conference championship this year, but I also didn't expect us to be worse than Rich Rod's first year, which is what it's shaping up to be.
I went whitewater rafting once in a big group along with a couple friends. We needed more people in the boat so 2 guys joined. They were doing their master's in some engineering field. Long story short, we couldn't steer the boat at all because of those 2. One guy in the back kept dragging his paddle in the water not realizing the drag was causing us to turn to his side all the time. We ended up smashing into a rock when we inevitable failed to do the maneuvering we were instructed to do. Everyone fell out but me (because you lean TOWARDS rocks you're hitting). I'm sure they could have told me a bunch of shit about physics and math that I don't know, their X's and O's so to speak, but the only thing that matters is they couldn't get it done on the river. They were total failures with basic real-world physics.

I don't know. You should tell us. What could they do? How exactly would they show us Hoke is a good coach?
|3 weeks 22 hours ago||This is ridiculous. Just||
This is ridiculous. Just because Marcus Ray is blinded by loyalty to Hoke doesn't make him disloyal to Michigan. Hoke is the HC at MICHIGAN. Marcus thinks Hoke can be successful. Therefore, he thinks Michigan can be successful. Hoke, like it or not, is a part of Michigan. They aren't two separate entities.
Having said that, I still have yet to hear if anyone knows what he was doing during the Rich Rod days. Same goes for Jay Feely. He has a tweet saying he doesn't like John Bacon because he defended Rich Rod in Three And Out. They're obviously biased, but if they think Hoke's a good coach and Rich Rod's a bad one, then fine. That's their dumb opinion. But the thing that really grates me is when they talk about how loyal they are and all the fans calling for Hoke to be fired are traitors or fair-weather fans even though they were on the fans' side of things during Rich Rod's tenure. What were they then?

This is all leaving aside the fact that realizing the benefits of a shield punt isn't that difficult. Seth broke it down a couple weeks ago. Shield punting lets you get more guys after the ball. Getting more guys after the ball is good. Do I know every detail about the technique of how the lineman block? No. Do I need to in order to realize shield punting is better? No.

I can't believe people seriously think he almost fell over because of his ankle. His head droops down and his whole body wobbles and he just sort of leans against Braden. He's also been walking around on that bad ankle all game, and then suddenly after a huge hit to his fucking face his ankle sort of seizes up like it hasn't done all game and like ankle sprains don't do. If he dropped very suddenly and holds his ankle that's one thing. I really don't see how anyone with any basic experience of being dizzy or having a sprained ankle can reasonably say that looks like an ankle problem.

How does Brandon's actions have anything to do with Republicans and Democrats? I'd think a lot of conservative traditional fans would be against shitty piped-in music for one thing. Bill Martin kept ticket prices reasonable. Does that make him a socialist?
Also, I wouldn't read too much into the Ross quote. He doesn't really seem like a guy who'd bitch about an AD anyway. The source claiming there's no move to get rid of Brandon is disheartening, but if it's someone from within the department, there's a good chance he's friendly with Brandon.

I disagree with a lot of what Seth says, and I don't agree with everything Brian says either, but to be fair, I think Brian has only used dinosaur football to refer to game theory bits and things like NFL-style punting. He doesn't like the continual use of Williams at TE, but he never said that's a dinosaur philosophy; he just thinks other options are better given that Williams can't block, regardless of whether or not that's true.

The other user mentioned tempo, but then there's also the fact that we're going under center a whole lot and not using Gardner's legs at all, which is just mind-boggling. Having said that, there were some designed runs for him under Borges, so it kind of seems like it's Nuss' doing, which is even more mind-boggling. Didn't the QB at Washington run a bunch when he was there? The tempo thing is also weird. There's no real reason to think Nuss is being vetoed on it besides the fact that everyone talked about him running a bunch of tempo that then never comes up in a game.
I'd also still like to see Hayes get some real carries. He may be playing more in garbage time, but he's looked good when he's had chances and looks really fast. It's hard to say if the coaches just don't think he's been good enough or if they're dead set on using big burly RBs, but considering the RBs have made some glaring mistakes, he deserves a shot you'd think.

I've never understood why people mention John Harbaugh as a possible candidate. He didn't go to Michigan. OK, he's Jim's brother, his dad was an assistant coach here, and he graduated from Pioneer. Is that it? He's been coaching in the NFL for almost 20 years and he's successful and makes 7 mil a year. Michigan isn't going to pay that much and they don't need to to get a good coach. Hell, Saban would probably come here for 7 mil (think he makes 5). I mean, Jim already seems unlikely enough but he obviously loves Bo and Michigan so at least there's some shred of hope there.
