- A good percentage of the state won't vote for a Republican. - A good percentage of Republican/undecided voters are Michigan State fans, who won't vote for him. - A good percentage of his natural demographic (Michigan fans) won't vote for him, for whatever reason, political or personal. - The easiest parallel to make with Brandon (Ann Arbor businessman, relatively uncontroversial public persona, viewed as politically neutral) is Rick Snyder, who currently has sub-40% popularity levels, and who ran a neutral campaign that veered vastly right-wing after two years. Everything negative about Snyder will be attached to Brandon. I don't think Brandon will run. It's a bad race for him to run in, sources tell me he prefers being an exec to being "1 of 100", and I don't see a path to victory for him. If he does run, I think it will be a mistake in the long run. |

Football - Woodson (with Rose Bowl shoulder graphic), Brady, Howard, Ford, Denard (with name on back!), Anthony Carter tearaway. Basketball - Trey Burke...with his name on the back, and properly sewn letters and numbers. And Fab Five, of course. Hockey - Brendan Morrison (as listed above), Red Berenson (white with MICHIGAN across front like current whites), Carl Hagelin (either regular maize from that era, or Big Chill). Got all of the others that I need. haha |

I'm a die-hard Michigan fan too, but don't have the basketball knowledge and history because I'm a hockey guy. There's a segment of the Michigan fanbase that doesn't follow basketball until the Big Ten season starts up, or something like that. There's also a segment that doesn't care about hockey unless it's MSU week or a tournament, and that's alright too. This whole hockey debacle is really casting a pall over enjoying this basketball season, for me. Just a year with a lot of feelings. |

On one hand, Sparty can be a useful tool in beating Ohio State or other bigger rivals. (For years, Michigan would beat Notre Dame and give Sparty a chance to knock out the Irish, and Sparty would blow it.) On the other hand, three years of having bandwagon Sparty fans call our QB reprehensible racial slurs does get old. ---- And, speaking as someone who goes to a lot of Michigan games, watching a game in East Lansing is somewhat bizarre. Way more drunkenness, far more profanities, and stuff that must have seemed cool in 1995. (Despite all the renovations to their facilities, their Jock Jams, Volume 3 CD managed to stick around.) Just a weird timewarp of a place. |

| 25 weeks 3 days ago | Honestly, I like things the |
Honestly, I like things the way they are now. Michigan should play Ohio State every year, and The Game always does affect the final standings. The only time I'd radically switch things around would be if the conference went to 20 teams. Then, have the Big Ten against the Big East Ten or something. |

Rutgers and Maryland were largely irrelevant (and still are!), so I didn't bother to include them. Adding Nebraska officially would have added more logistical hoops to jump through (how can you predict a conference finish with a completely different schedule?). |

| 25 weeks 3 days ago | I didn't want to rely on too |
I didn't want to rely on too many sanctions, because my off-hand knowledge is incomplete. If a team won on the field, I put them in the title game. Again though, putting Michigan and OSU in the same division would avoid a lot of rematches, but it would also lock out their divisional opponents from pretty much any division titles. Splitting up the teams allows for potentially lucrative rematches, and opens up the field for the rest of the Big Ten. |

- It was like midnight, and I was tired. - Aargh, I thought I checked everything aaaargh EDITED: 1993 got fixed. Good news guys, Michigan wins another division title! |
| 25 weeks 3 days ago | Good point. |
While Michigan and Ohio State are still somewhat dominant, the two divisions are balanced out. The Game almost always affects the Big Ten divisional race, for better or worse. A win over the main rival is a big step to locking up a division title, a loss can knock you out. Just like it's always been, Michigan/Ohio State always affects the Big Ten championship, although in a different way. By having balanced divisions that separate the two powers, it not only creates the potential for a rematch, but also allows other teams to win division titles in down years. A Michigan & Ohio State division would all but lock out every other team in the division. |

| 26 weeks 5 days ago | Certain words. |
I've heard a certain group of people at or around the Big House use racially-tinged language in the past couple seasons. It's always either the rednecks (who, for whatever reason, always look like they came here as a random thing to on a Saturday) or the WASPy types whose parents sent those racist letters to the Fab Five. I've had to get into it with some of those latter people in the past, especially since they spend their Saturdays by dropping a ton of cash to angrily say racist things about everything that's around them. Do they hate Denard, and every black player on the team? Yes. Constant racially-motivated complaints, entirely unprompted. (It's not like they are saying racist stuff after a bad pass, they are saying it loudly at 1:30 pm while cooking.) Do they hate the coaches, from Carr to Rodriguez to Hoke? Yes. Is it because they are recruiting black players? Yes. Do they hate the people tailgating around them? Yes. Do they hate Michigan, hate anything progressive surrounding the school? Yes, they are the first to talk about how we're all godless heathens or whatever for not supporting whatever they support. (And, before this derail starts, it's not a religion thing. It's a money spectrum and ignorance thing.) Frankly, I don't know why they are here. If they want to dress like yachting twats and shout racial epithets, the SEC is awaiting them with open arms. |

| 26 weeks 6 days ago | We are getting Merrill back |
We are getting Merrill back shortly. That should make things better. This isn't anywhere close to a final product yet. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | Yes, but |
On one hand, Jacob Trouba does take himself completely out of the play and game with those big hits. On the other hand, we're on track to get some type of Trouba-specific, MHB tuba-led chant or something by January. Think of the positives! |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | Also... |
...by keeping players in college, a team is basically letting them develop on someone else's dime. New Jersey is letting Red develop Merrill into a great defenseman, while keeping his future rights for longer. I don't know why a team would pull someone out of NCAA or juniors to let them sit in their minor league system. It saves money, saves time, and basically hides their prospects out of sight for a while. I'm hoping that Winnipeg does the same with Trouba, although he might get called up by the Jets sooner that we'd hope. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | Lots of self-pressure. |
Rutledge seems to be putting too much pressure on himself. He's a great talent, but just needs to relax a bit and play. Better play will come, but Jared needs to be able to put a bad goal behind him. Racine is playing like Hasek out there, with no fear whatsoever. It's exciting to watch, and it shows some ballsy confidence in himself and the team in front of him. |

| 26 weeks 6 days ago | It's one thing if someone |
It's one thing if someone leaves early when they are completely ready for the NHL, like Jack. It's another thing if someone leaves early when they could have used another year or two in college, like Pacioretty or Andrew Cogliano. Red has mentioned before how he finds it detrimental to leave school to just go play in the minors for a year or so anyway. If you're leaving for the NHL, great. But if you're leaving in a lateral move, it just takes away from your education. In some cases, a team might be talking up a player's stock, and that guy has the self-confidence to go after that NHL goal. It might be a shortsighted move, but hey, he is following his dreams, even if everyone else doesn't like it. Chris Brown is in a completely different situation. THERE IS NO NHL THIS YEAR. Chris Brown wouldn't be playing for the Phoenix Coyotes no matter what, as there are no Phoenix Coyotes right now. He could be in Ann Arbor, finishing his undergrad degree and completing a year of the Berenson School of Leadership and Captaincy, while also lighting it up and becoming a school legend. Instead, he's a second or third-liner in a minor league city even farther from home. Just disappointing all around. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | In rebuttal. |
1. The erratic play is likely to improve as players start finding their comfort zones. An influx of freshman, no starter in net, and players adjusting to new roles will do that to a team trying to find its potential. But with that said, any good team can't just relax. Consistency has hurt Michigan in years past, and you'd hope that things would settle down shortly. 2. Having so many freshman in big roles does affect the consistency, as mentioned above. That said, this team will really come together as the season progresses. There's so much potential with this team. 3. Treais is the perfect example of what the role of senior/captain can do. AJ has become a complete player, and he's setting the example for everyone else. 4. I think Racine will be the eventual starter. Rutledge is the more talented goalie overall, but Racine has the confidence to take the starting job and not give it up. 5. If Trouba keeps his skates on the ice, he wouldn't be getting those penalties. No matter the head-shoulder physics of his hitting, penalties will always get called when it looks like someone left the ice to make a hit. I'd hope that Merrill is back by the end of the month. Lou Lamiorello told the NJ media that Merrill will be out around six weeks, and a November 24th return against Cornell would be after about 6.5 weeks to heal. If he can't go then, there's the weekend after at Ferris State, then a weekend against Western two weeks after that. Merrill will return sometime in that stretch. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | 7. |
I have no idea why Chris Brown chose to leave, considering the NHL might be locked out for the entire season. I don't think money is a major issue, I don't recall any other problems, and the college schedule and its perks have to be better than bussing everywhere from Portland, ME every day. Chris has his same PPG pace, roughly, but it's still an AHL assignment in nowhere over a senior season where he'd be a beloved captain and potential award winner (not to mention the team goals). Red was disappointed in the decision, and so was I. To quote Red, around the time Chris left: "Playing your senior year, look what it did for Steven Kampfer, look what it did for Matt Hunwick, look what it did for Carl Hagelin. I mean these guys are good examples of doing the right thing and how they grew in their senior year in that leadership role. What about graduation? Why did you come to school to start with? Was it just to play hockey? If you did, you came to the wrong place. We graduate players here." It was a stupid move to leave, and it looks even worse when the NHL isn't even an option. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | Sumlin will stay at Texas |
Sumlin will stay at Texas A&M. I don't think he's going anywhere for a while, and the other opportunities would only get better if he actually wins some titles in the SEC. And frankly, the SEC isn't as good as everyone says. It's an incredibly unbalanced conference, with three good teams and four bad teams in each division. (The SEC West has Alabama, Texas A&M, and LSU with a combined record of 9-0 against everyone else in their division. The SEC East has Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina with a 12-0 record against everyone else in their division.) The conference has its power teams beat up on everyone below it, and are always talked up as the greatest thing ever. Frankly, any of the one-loss teams in the SEC should be grouped in with any one-loss team from around the nation. No SEC worldbeaters this year. |
| 26 weeks 6 days ago | The best scenario is as follows. |
- Win out. - Watch Nebraska lose one game. - In the course of winning out, end Ohio State's undefeated season, in Columbus. - Beat Wisconsin for the Big Ten championship. - Go to the Rose Bowl, against an undefeated Notre Dame (who spent a solid month complaining about being left out of the championship game, how they'd be co-champs with a win, et cetera.) - Beat Notre Dame on New Year's Day. This is what we have left to root for, let's do it. |

| 40 weeks 8 hours ago | Two things. |
- The Lions had division/championship banners at the Silverdome, but enever moved them to Ford Field. - The Lions didn't plan on having a Ring Of Honor, but when the NCAA took over Ford Field in 2008 or 2009, they put up a lot of decorations with adhesive that messed up a lot of surfaces. The Lions then put up banners as a "ring of honor" that completely cover up the stains. |

Michigan's press release is incorrect. The last ticket stub of the season honors the 1994 team, not the 1992 team. The Free Press is internally debating about when to further cut printing and delivery days. Eventually, the Free Press will be down to delivering only on Sundays, and possibly only publishing physical newspapers on that day as well. As mentioned earlier, writers are now filling the gaps when people leave, and the newsroom staff continues to shrink and shrink. If a blogger is trying to attach itself to a newspaper, they are giving up their own creative control and larger rights to a dying industry. We are at the point in the evolution of media when it's better to create and build your own site and invest in yourself for the future. Selling out your rights to a newspaper is doomed to fail, because I don't see a realistic option for these papers to survive. MGoBlog and other sites like it are where media is headed, whether Gannett and others like it or not. |
| 43 weeks 6 days ago | Here's what happened. |
Back in the day (early '90s or so), the NCAA was trying to push a cleaner game on Canadian prospects and parents. The CHL, as it is now, was more violent and less skillful, and that was the NCAA's angle (plus education). Naturally, in the game that the NCAA brings everyone to, Michigan vs Michigan State and the Joe, both teams get into a bench-clearing brawl. After that, the NCAA banned fighting. |

Michigan will occasionally recruit guys in other footprints, but the same basic mold is in everyone: highly ranked since age 15 or 16, had some previous interaction with the program, and then got a scholarship offer many years in advance. With someone like Moffatt, who was not around any colleges, he played for an elite club team in Arizona that attracted the attention of colleges, then went to the USNDT in Ann Arbor. That's what got him on Michigan's radar, which led to him on the team. |

...then Kitchener would sue, instead of making noise about it. Their whole angle today has just been to save face, since an actual lawsuit would open up their books (and expose a lot of payoffs, potentially). |

We need to get her to Yost this season. |
| 45 weeks 4 days ago | Kind of. |
The CHL assigns players to leagues based on regions, which is why most of the college hockey teams from the Midwest end up fighting the OHL. Most of Hockey East and the New England teams go against the QMJHL, and the rare western prospect to come east for college hockey would be going against the WHL. With Michigan, Red typically locks in recruiting classes years in advance, from hockey camps mostly. That makes our roster primarily local, with a couple big Canadians and the occasional non-Michigander. Most of the prospects from more exotic locations never get to Michigan, because the spots are already filled. |

...getting a dollar figure on suspected payments for only the second time ever is a really big deal. Michigan Daily, post some Muppets on your homepage! |
| 45 weeks 4 days ago | No Muppets. |
Muppets are for big victories. "Not being a dishonest jerk" isn't a big victory. |
| 45 weeks 4 days ago | What does this situation require. |
It requires HAGELIN SWAGGER.

Pretty sure that was Seth. |

With a look of stern disapproval on my face, for some reason. I don't exactly know why, but everyone here tends to have weird photo moments. |
| 45 weeks 6 days ago | That was a good time. |
Let's figure out a tailgate event or something. |
| 45 weeks 6 days ago | Laziness. |
I'm pretty sure it's just laziness. Michigan/the Big Ten/BTN hold the rights to everything, and whoever is doing the programming is just putting on the usual rotation of Top 2011 FB Games, Top 2011-12 Basketball Game, every school episode of their latest original programming, and a couple random classic games. |
| 45 weeks 6 days ago | Jackson's not out yet... |
There will still be more players named to the team as injury/vacancy replacements. Considering that Austin's probably the next outfielder to go, I'd be surprised if he's not on the team eventually. |
| 45 weeks 6 days ago | We all are. |
Now that the Stanley Cup playoffs are over, I'm firmly in football mode. YouTubed Michigan games have been amazing, especially since BTN only seems to show games from last season. |
| 46 weeks 9 hours ago | Good times. |
You know, tennis and skateboarding really is somewhat fascinating, when on a bank of HD screens. Thanks for the gathering, Brian, that was a fun time. |

I'm coming, and excited to do so. Always great to get back to Ann Arbor. |
| 1 year 3 days ago | BCS Bowls as a playoff... |
Have the current BCS bowl games, with all the usual tie-ins, as the first round. Have the two western bowl winners (Rose/Fiesta) and the two eastern bowl winners (Sugar/Orange) play each other. Those winners would then play for the national title. The semifinal sites would flip from year to year, and the national championship site would rotate every four years. Each season, one bowl site would host two additional games and one site would host one additional game. Problem solved. |
| 1 year 47 weeks ago | A heartfelt wedding message from Adidas |
Dear Brian, Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. However, couldn't you use some stripes down the shoulders of your jacket? We here at Adidas would love to help. Not only would we outfit your entire wedding party with an ensemble that roughly resembles what your grandparents might have worn but actually didn't, but we can also come up with a full line of shirts, hats, and accessories to outfit your big day. Remember, it's not just your marital partner that you should be worried about...it's also your corporate partners. Sincerely, Adidas ---- Congrats, Brian! |
| 2 years 36 weeks ago | In the program... |
In today's program, there was an article on Slippery Rock's place in Michigan Football history, and ended with a small plea to one day announce Slippery Rock scores at the Big House again. Looks like something got worked out. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | Good. |
Go Blue, it's nice to see some confidence back. It's part of coming all the way back. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | It's just amusing... |
....that UConn's stadium, and somewhere that we play in the near future, has the college atmosphere of being 30 miles off campus and across the street from Cabela's. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | Nothing would have changed. |
Rich was on the outs with West Virginia's AD and staff, and was looking to go somewhere else. A job that he knew had deep meaning opened up. He jumped at the chance. I doubt that anything major would have changed. WV still would have complained, and people would still whine that the new coach isn't Bo Schembechler or a Bo clone. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | If we win... |
If Michigan has a winning season (anything above .500), I'd say that the games would be on the regular BTN, especially since all of the late-season opponents are pretty good in their own right. |

All of Michigan's recent design work has been done by Old Hat Creative, out of Oklahoma. | 2 years 37 weeks ago | You will. |
You'll get it on ABC, it's a hometown market. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | Check this site. |
Here's a pretty definitive list of where every game will be shown. http://mattsarzsports.com/2010/week1.aspx Looks like ESPN2 for State. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | According to... |
According to The506.com's forums, here's a letter from ABC's affliate in Tampa: "WFTS will air the Connecticut vs. Michigan game on Saturday, 09/04 at 3:30 p.m. The Kentucky-Louisville game should be available on ESPN or with the ESPN Game Plan Package; check with your local cable or satellite provider for more details.
If the Tampa market, a relatively neutral one in this case, is showing Michigan/UConn, it's safe to assume that most other neutral markets will also show Michigan, and that our game is the primary game for the whole country. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | Does anyone know... |
What weeks does the Big Ten Network get the second choice of games? From what I remember about the TV contracts: - ABC always gets the first pick of Big Ten games. - BTN, ESPN, and ESPN2 rotate among who gets the second/third/plus choices. - Any remaining games go to BTN. - (Not entirely sure on this, but...) Games are usually picked a couple weeks in advance, a couple weeks at a time. Anyone know what weeks give which networks preferential treatment? |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | Speaking of tickets as souvenirs... |
I'm starting a blog on ticket stubs and ticket stub designs. Michigan/Detroit teams will be given some preference obviously, but just about every NFL and every major CFB team will be included for now. I'll post up a link when it's ready, but it shall be quite awesome considering how amazing Michigan Football's tickets have been over the years. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | Easy target, easy story. |
"How Many Wins?" has been cliched for years now. If Rich Rodriguez has a good year, he'll stay. If Rich Rodriguez does something terribly scanadalous, he'll be fired. Frankly, it's time to get down to football, just so that there's actual stories to talk about. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | There's a good chance this will happen for other reasons... |
Given that this is the rededication game for Michigan Stadium, I could see the athletic department inviting everyone back for the ceremony. Of course, RR could use this to get this year's roster acquainted with lots of alumni greats. The NFL is off, after all, as every team will play their last preseason game on Thursday. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | Some tips... |
- Get there early, so you two can walk around and explore the stadium. - Try not to leave the seating bowl once you get in. If you leave before the game, there's a good chance that lines around the section entrances will cause you to miss some of the game. Get in, and stay in, for the most part. - Take a lot of mental pictures, this will be a great day of memories. |
| 2 years 37 weeks ago | How this will play out. |
1. Both Michigan and OSU will leak reports of how angry fans are with changing the date of The Game. Both AD's will comment on it, there will be stories sympathetic to the fans, the whole schtick. 2. Once actual football begins, the angry calls will start to lessen in number, since there's other things to worry about now. Not that this issue takes a backseat to anything, but people will divide their attention with the games being played. 3. The Big Ten will take this as a sign that the fans understand where the conference is coming from, and will push forward with a stupidly hated idea. 4. The Big Ten will announce that, "after listening to so many fans", Michigan and Ohio State will play in late-August from now on. College football fans will gnash their teeth, and Jim Delany will happily congratulate himself on a job well done. Just you watch. This will happen, unfortunately. |
