18 weeks 2 days ago When?

When did they say that the new division format will be released?

I'll be content with either option that puts M and OSU in the same diviison, though I think the East/West will give us better exposure for recruiting.

18 weeks 3 days ago On a blog?

If we consistently adopted that philosophy there would certainly be many fewer things to read about on MGoBlog.  Aren't most of us here much of the tim to do the opposite?

18 weeks 3 days ago No, loose.

Maybe he was referring to injuries related to inflexibility.  If you don't stretch enough (aka loose) then you get injured and have to leave the team.

Probably helps recruiting too to show up in those markets more frequently.

Personally, I'd love to be able to travel to see the games @Maryland.

22 weeks 5 days ago East-West for recruiting?

Posted this on Brian's thread too:

I'm wondering if a stacked Eastern division is better.  Recruits know they are guaranteed a number of big games each year.  Also, playing at Maryland and Rutgers every other year probalbly helps recruiting.

I think the odds of winning the division are a bit lower in the East/West format, but it also makes for a great number of big games and might help recruiting in some hotbed areas.  I'm going east-west.

Other than Charoltte and the Triangle, I know of no other UofM alumni clubs in North Carolina.  I see a decent number of Michigan bumper stickers out in Western North Carolina, but I don't think there's any formal organization.

30 weeks 6 days ago Well-done, Sir!

I searched to see when that thread had been started, but didn't actually look at it.  Well-done.  I'm not in Charlotte or the Triangle, so if it handn't been for your post here, I never would have know about it.

Hopefully we're closing in on 300 soon.

Go Blue!

1 year 9 weeks ago Walk on =/= 3-4*

It seems to me that a prefferred walk on without a profile on Rivals or Scout (at least that I could find) =/= a 3-4 star 2013 prospect.  Mandle is still a welcome addition, but if the coaches really think we need another top TE, they'll still take one.  There is still a lot of time to evaluate prospects and give out offers.

Also, if the coaches really think we need another top TE, I hope we get one.  They know far better than we what our needs really are.  Perhaps they're expecting more attrition and know we'll be in the 23-24 range.  Maybe everyone will be happy!

1 year 9 weeks ago Mixed feelings

Normally I'd be pretty bummed to miss out on a target the coaches are high on, but given the feeling that we're rapidly running out of room for "best available" targets, and we already have 2 TEs committed, it doesn't feel quite as bad right now.

Also, if he's going to end up elsewhere, he's much less likely to come back to hurt us at Pitt.

1 year 9 weeks ago Or else, indeed.

Or else we'll have picked up other well-regarded players, most likely.

1 year 9 weeks ago Good Luck!

It's no longer the 3rd Thursday, but here's a good NY Times article from a few years back for those who don't know about Match Day. --LINK--

In addition to changing the scramble, I also heard that there had been grumbling for years about M4s not being quite in tip-top condition come Friday morning after Match Day.  So have a good Friday, a great Friday night night, and hopefully a restful weekend!

1 year 10 weeks ago Bell's > New Belgium

When I moved to Asheville a while ago I was very happy to see that New Belgium beers were readily available in bars and stocked in stores.

I was even happier to find Bell's just as prevelant.  Asheville annually competes for the title of Beer City USA , and while there are a lot of great local brews, Bell's definitely is held in high regard.  (Founders and a few others are well-represented as well.)

1 year 10 weeks ago Big name

He gave a relatively underwhelming address at the medical school graduation a few years ago.

1 year 10 weeks ago Answered

Answered in the comments to Brian's post: He was not going to be staying around after this season thus already considered gone from the standpoint of 2013 recruiting.

1 year 10 weeks ago I see: 2013.

I wasn't talking about him being kicked off the team either... Just didn't understand the numbers.

The thing I was missing was the fact that we're talking about 2013 recruiting. So it makes no difference that he's gone before the season, as he was going to move on after the season. Thus already counted. Got it!

1 year 10 weeks ago Yes but...

But even after it changes to RS Jr that would still be his 4th year. RS Seniors sometimes don't get their 5th year. RS Juniors always get their 4th (unless they move on on their own.)

1 year 10 weeks ago RS Junior?!?

As this thread isn't locked yet, I'm (double) posting this comment here, as well as in the comments for Brian's post:

How does one assume that a RS Junior will be left off the roster?  Bell is currently listed as a RS Soph.  Unless I'm missing something (certainly posible at 5am), next year would have been his 4th year, not his 5th.

I know it's a moot point now, but if he hadn't quit, I don't see how the coaches were going to kick him off the team.

1 year 10 weeks ago Go Blue!

Keep the commit train rolling.  Hopefully just the first of a few this weekend!

1 year 10 weeks ago Same page.

I think we're on the same page.  A few final thoughts...

I was thinking more of you linking to the TTB Rating scale at the end of your eval when you give the grade.  I, for one, hadn't read many of yoru reviews before, and didn't know the scale was linked at the top of the page, so I was definitely missing some context for a while there.

My point with the whole NFL draft potential, is that I care much more about what the college world will think of a player.  I want to know who the college version of the Danny Wuerffel, Eric Crouch, Charlie Ward, and even the Denard Robinson-type players will be.  Whether or not an amazing college player (skill position or otherwise) will translate well to the NFL is definitel a valid thing to assess, it just isn't so relevant to my interest as a college football fan.

That said, keep up the good work!

1 year 10 weeks ago Got it.

So are you basically saying that the best center of the year (or the decade, for that matter) will probably never be ranked as highly as the top few Receivers/RBs/QBs on any given year, based on their NFL draft potential?

Again, it certainly isn't irrelevant in the global picture, but from the standpoint of evaluating how it will affect the product on the (college) field, NFL impact still seems irrelevant (or at least far less relevant) to me.  No problem though.  What I hear you saying is that you are not evaluating how good a college player someone will be, but how likely they are to be a good college player AND NFL prospect.

That seems like a perfectly reasonable goal to me, but will stand by my comment that, while I like seeing Michigan players do well in the draft, I really only care about their production on the field in college, not in the NFL combine or draft...  Irrelevant was probalby too strong a word.  Probalby better to say that, IMO,  the ratings would be more relevant to me if NFL potential were not a factor.

P.S.  I agree with the person who said that including a like to the explanation of the scale would be a good idea.

P.S.S.  Worth repeating that I appreciate the evaluation and look forward to reading more of them.

1 year 10 weeks ago Chivalry is not dead.

IIRC she's just a few points away (I'm on the iPod app now so can't see points) so no need to worry.

But yes, I second.

Edit: Now on the laptop.  See100+ points.  Crisis averted.

1 year 10 weeks ago Sorry to repeat myself.

Posted about this below as I didn't see this reply.

I don't see how NFL potential is at all relevant to us, as Michigan Football fans.  If he's the best center in college football, I could care less if that's a first round, fourth round or undrafted position.  I'm looking for Michigan to have more wins, not the Lions.

I can understand how, in a global perspective, NFL status might be relevant, but on a college football blog looking to see how a recruit will affect his college team, downgrading his evaulation because you think he won't be an early round pick seems counter productive.

1 year 10 weeks ago Draft spot =/= quality of College player.

I also appreciate the non-sugar coated evals. My only complaint (same with Rivals) is that, IMO, NFL potential/draft position is irrelevant.

Think back to some if the Heisman winners who were not highly regarded in the NFL. I'd much rather have the best player in college football who may not translate as well to the pros, than a lesser college player who will be better at the next level.

Tell me about (and rank) a player's college potential. I'll look to Mel Kiper for the draft eval.

This is a Michigan blog.  Amaker is a Harvard coach.  Why don't you go find a Harvard blog?!?
Grumble, grumble... Rich Rod... grumble, grumble...  Arizona... grumble, grumble...
/s
Sorry, couldn't resist.  Could never undersand how, with OT and Rich Rod clearly on the title of other posts, they still drew these flame types of comments.  Easy enough to ignore if one is not interested.

Anyway, Glad to see Amaker having some success (though sorry that it was at the expense of the mighty Fighting Quakers.)  I would have liked to see the one-game playoff.  Without an Ivy League conference tournament, that is a pretty exciting way to determine who wil be dancing, when needed.

Also, while I appreciate the effort, why explain the most services have 20-30 5-star players, but then turn around and call the top 50 on each service a 5-star?

If you want a "true" definition of a 5-star at least an average of the services (33-34 players/year) if not the most restrictive (22-29) criteria seems more appropriate.

1 year 11 weeks ago Or...

Sounds like it would be more like getting kid from Ann Arbor, who held a UofM offer for months, who then decommitted from UofM after a coaching change, to go elsewhere.

We certainly suffered recruiting losses as a result of coaching changes in the past, so it doesn't sound to implausible to me.  I'm not saying probably, but certainly possible.

1 year 12 weeks ago Overall best was 44

Our UofM guys still stack up very nicely.  Martin was tied with BYU's Loni Fangupo for second among the DLs (third overall, after Molk's 41, I believe) with 36.

Memphis DL Dontair Poe put up 44.  Best this year.  NFL.com article here.

And if true, probably makes him less desirable to us as a prospect.  In the plus side he's a highly-rated lineman who would arrive next season and begin his development.  On the negative side, there are probably some other possibilities on the board for this year who grade out higher.

Wonder if the "bird in the hand" philosohpy will come into play here at all, if he ever becomes inclined to Go Blue.

1 year 12 weeks ago Just wait...

Just wait until his cousin Tom tears up the combine in a few years!

1 year 12 weeks ago More flexibility?

I wondered if perhaps Kozan didn't want to be pegged for C only (maybe wanting more of the C/G option) and that more options who could play C meant that Kozan wouldn't be forced there if he was a better fit at G.

That's all I could come up with, but I don't have $$ access to Webb's articles.

1 year 12 weeks ago Small difference.

He bested the next buy by 7 reps.  Results here.  And here's the video.

(Video includes OSU's Mike Adams' pathetic 19 on the bench.   Per the announcers "That's not acceptable... You'll see a lot of deensive backs do better than that")

1 year 12 weeks ago Despite the trend...

I'll offer a non-sarcastic/trolling addition. But I'll raise the stakes with a request for paywalled "info" (theory, really.)

Sam Webb tweeted yesterday that landing Kugler (& his missing r) may help with Kozan. Anyone care to offer an abridged version of why that might be?

That is amazing, but I suspect he's a bit disappointed.  He said in the ESPN story on he and Martin that he'd done 39 reps after an entire workout.  I suspect he was hoping for a bigger jump.  Still, amazing.  I hope his potential is seen and translates to an decent draft position.

Interestingly, "FakeEmail@hotmail.com" was already in use, so I had to add a 2 at the end of mine.  Perhapse I'll go for 3 in a bit.

1 year 12 weeks ago What a disappointment

When I saw this "trust me" post from someone who'd been registered for all of two days and is still in single-digit mgopoints, I was grabbing the popcorn in anticipation of the replies.  But then... nothing.  Man, are you guys are getting soft.  :-)

Anyway, just because we're "in on" a lot of good *ones at this point (11 months from NSD) it is still far from an assurance that we'll end up with any of the current top uncommitted targets.  Granted, I'll take our current position over many alternatives, but I'm not going to start counting those (exceptionally large) chickens before they hatch, err... sign.

1 year 13 weeks ago I thought the same thing.

I thought the same thing.  The commitments over the weekend were great, but unless it other WRs come aboard, it is not relevant to Treadwell's timing.

Hopefully if he was a Michigan lean before, however, the enthusiasm/momentum will push him to go in the right direction, and sooner.

Go Blue!

1 year 13 weeks ago I've also noticed that,

I've also noticed that, unlike Bosch, it seems that the calls usually go in the order I described:  Call and commit ("lockign in" the decision.)  Then calling the the coaches to give them the FYI.

I suppose when you call from the Crisler Center, the other coaches probably know they don't have a chance to talk the player out of the decision, not that they would necessarily try anyway.

1 year 13 weeks ago Not unusual

I've read reports from many players calling a coach to commit, then calling the others to let them know.  I think it's fairly standard, but stil a classy move.

1 year 13 weeks ago I doubt we'd have room to

I doubt we'd have room to take both Tunsil and Pocic, but having them both want to Go Blue would be a nice problem for the coaches to sort out!

I think it had a measurable effect...  Measured at least 8 commitments large.  :-)

Go Blue!

1 year 13 weeks ago Posted this in the Kozan thread too:

You do know that, other than maybe Dawson, none of this weekend's recruits project to center, right?

Posted this in the Kozan thread too:

I'll happily welcome him into the fold if/when he chooses to Go Blue.  I still fail to believe the lack of understanding of the stress a teenager could feel making what must feel like a huge commitment and likely the biggest decision of his life.

Just like it was tiring hearing the whiners talk about "not closing" our top 10/top 5 recruiting class, the folks who continue to throw out statements about Kozan not being 100% committed and moving on prove tedious as well.

Kozan is a great prospect and plays a position of need.  I couldn't care less if it takes him two months to decide.  I hope to see him on the field in the Big House sometime soon!

1 year 13 weeks ago Why so impatient?

I fear you're right, but will still enjoy this glorious weekend to be a Wolverine!

1 year 13 weeks ago No joke.

I'm also down in SEC/ACC country.  I drove my wife crazy with football talk last season thought the Sugar Bowl, then recruiting talk through signing day.

Keeping my best interest in mind, I haven't said a work to her all weekend about everything going on... It's driving me crazy!

1 year 13 weeks ago May?!?

This weekend WILL go down on Wolverine lore. That's a done-deal already!

1 year 13 weeks ago Different positions?

I thought Dawson was projected inside, even an small chance he ends up at center, while Pocic & LTT were projected more outside.  If so, I don't see the problem here.

Also, you do realize what Dawson's offer list is, right?  You talk about him like he is a lesser recruit.

Some people thought Hoke shouldn't have offered Dawson, Hill, or Shallman until other higher targets had gone elsewhere.  And last year Michigan was able to snag Norfleet at the very end because they had a spot open.  Will Michigan have to turn away Pocic or LTT because Dawson took one of their spots?

1 year 13 weeks ago Done, and at Michigan!

Actually, as someone else mentioned in another thread, there was precedent, and at Michigan.

See July 8, 2003.  Probably not the same fan experience without the mgoblog effect, but 6 commits (including one Mike Hart) nonetheless.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/commitmen...

Forget the size of the school, what Brady Hoke and Michigan did today was unprecedented.

Edit: Of note, only 4/6 commits then were 4-stars, and July is a bit different than February.

1 year 13 weeks ago Not that it makes a big difference...

...but I agree with your assessment.  If we lose an ugly game, it isn't much worse than what many expected.  If we win... buckle up!

1 year 13 weeks ago If you want to call it

If you want to call it high-risk, then I'd say that it has the potential to be an ugly loss, setting up a potential early seasion slide (including the game at Notre Dame,) coupled with a few other losses throughout the season which could turn next year's record into one which is much worse than this past season's.

If the down side is that we could end up at 12-1, that is not high-risk.

Also, in the quote I referenced a "nothing to lose, but everything to gain" situation was described which, if you accept that as reality, is decidely not high-risk.

1 year 13 weeks ago Sounds like you've described

Sounds like you've described low risk - high reward to me.

Honestly, this game is really set to benefit Michigan tremendously. If we lose, well, it's expected. If we win, it helps us in so many ways. This is a very high risk - reward game.

Gotta love locking up one of the few real positions of need for 2013 so early, and his recruiting to help fill the rest of the class is icing on the cake!

1 year 19 weeks ago Joking aside.  With this

Joking aside.  With this year's class as large as it is, it's hard to argue that there are many gaps in the 2012 class that the 2013 class needs to fill.  That said, it would seem that we did a great job signing "big time" prospects on defense in general, and also on the O-line.  I think some great skilled players on offense in the 2013 class would really round out the two years nicely.

1 year 19 weeks ago QB

I think we'll probably need a QB in the 2013 class.  I hope there is at least one good one interested.

1 year 19 weeks ago My understanding...

He would not count against either class' limit of 25, but would count against the 85 total players allowed on scholarship.  I do not believe that his addition would be retroactive to count against 2011 numbers, as he would not arrive until 2012.

Go Blue!

1 year 25 weeks ago Yes, but a 2-loss Alabama

Yes, but a 2-loss Alabama team would still be another team "competing" for an at-large BCS bid, and, arguably, would be more attractive than some other teams currently in the running, so if we want the best-case scenario for ourselves, we might want Alabama in the title game.

That said, I like the Just Beat Ohio theory best!

Go Blue!

1 year 25 weeks ago Quick thoughts

We want Oklahoma St to beat Oklahoma, I believe, as Oklahoma is less likely to get an at large bid with another loss.

We want an LSU and Alabama win and an LSU win in the SEC Championship game. LSU and Alabama are more or less guaranteed BCS spots so if they aren't in the championship game they are taking other slots. Also, we don't want Georgia to win the conference and pick up an auto bid.

I wonder if a Notre Dame win is a double bonus- giving Stanford a second loss and a loss to close out the season, plus our ND win looks better especially for the computer polls.

What else?

1 year 31 weeks ago Win, Win+Win

If Sparty wins, it makes our only loss not look quite so bad, especially if the MSU defense is as impressive.

If Wisconsin wins big it will be sweet, and if they win at all we are back in a tie atop the Legends division standing.  We'd still be down a tie breaker on the head-to-head record, but within striking distance of the B1G Championship game if we can turn things around and win out.

1 year 41 weeks ago I'm going to sound like a jerk...

I'll give the sincere disclaimer that I am really not trying to be/sound like a jerk here, but would you mind mentioning what the take-homes are here?  How is Lewan's lower BMI a "sign of fitness" but other's higher BMI correlating to better performance?  What is BMI adding here that simply looking at the OL's weight does not?

P.S.  I think that putting this much work into evaluating BMI was probably a waste, and had initially down voted based on frustration with BMI/assessment of the content here.  I switched over to an up vote, however, because even though it seems this turned out to be a long way of saying nothing, I do appreciate the effort.

1 year 41 weeks ago I appreciate the effort but...

I also hate to pile on, but BMI is entirely useless when it comes to sports.  BMI is, at best, a screening tool that you can use in a primary care setting to screen average NON-athletes for obesity.

The OP has certainly put in a lot of effort, but this isn't really even worthy of much discussion MGOBoard, let alone a Diary.  I guess it was bumped there for effort, and perhaps quantity of content.

Here, from the Mathematical Association of America:

Do you believe in Fairies, Unicorns, or the BMI?

They are offering him a scholarship, just not for this class.

If what we've heard it correct and the staff is being honest and up-front, he'll have a scholarship as of January, presumably for 4-5 years.  Assuming next year's class will be a bit smaller than this years, one could argue that next year's scholarhship spots are even more valuable than this years.

1 year 47 weeks ago You can find that info in my

You can find that info in my post, two above yours.  Basically, he would not yet be an official part of the team (and elegibility is not being used, assuming he is not enrolled full time).

1 year 47 weeks ago Greyshirt info

As this will likely be a topic of discussion:

Greyshirt Info HERE.

Grey-shirting:

While most people are familiar with the phrase "red-shirt" most people have no idea what a grey-shirt is.  In fact, the NCAA does not even acknowledge the term.  In a way, grey-shirting is like the U.S. Army's Delta Force—everyone knows it's their, but the governing body doesn't acknowledge it's existance.

Here is how grey-shirting works:

  1. A player commits to a team that is over-signed.
  2. That player either doesn't go to school in the fall, or enrolls part-time and pays their own way.  They are not officially on the team.
  3. In January of the following year, that player enrolls full-time and officially joins the team.  They are technically part of the recruiting class for the following year.

Grey-shirting is a way for schools to skate around the recruiting rules.  It allows schools to over-sign, regardless of how many prospects they signed the previous year.

Every player has a five year window to play four seasons.  That window starts the second a player is enrolled in college full-time or are on scholarship.  Since the player is not enrolled full time and is not on scholarship, their "NCAA clock" has not started.

Once they join a team, they still have the full five year window and the ability to red-shirt if they so choose.

While grey-shirting, players are not on the team.

They can not practice or condition with the team.  They can not be given any advantage not extended to the normal student body.  Grey-shirts are not allowed at team meetings or functions either.  For all intents they are essentially, regular students.

1 year 47 weeks ago Elegibility effect?

I didn't realize it would have any effect on elegibility.

He could theoretically still practice/play right away, if he were needed; he just isn't getting the scholarship for doing so immediately upon arriving on campus, right?

1 year 47 weeks ago Not nefarious...

And this is not nefarious in the way that the SEC has made grey shirts nefarious.  If you do it up front the kid knows he will be paying his own way for a semester with the scholi to follow.

Greyshirting has gotten a bad name, however, when schools oversign, telling all the incoming kids that they have a spot only to rescind a kid's scholarship after he is already on campus.

2 years 16 weeks ago In other words:

"...if you think of a four or five-star player as a guy who is supposed to become an All-American – and a two or three-star guy as someone who is definitely not supposed to become an All-American – then yes, the rankings frequently miss.

On the other hand, if you consider the initial grade as a kind of investment – a projection of the how likely a player is of becoming an elite contributor compared to rest of the field – well, you'd put your money with the "experts" over the chances of finding the proverbial diamond in the rough every time..."

2 years 16 weeks ago What's the percentage?

It would be more interesting (and relevant) if he'd also included the percentage of 5*, 4*, 3*, 2*, unranked, etc. that made all B1G.

I know this has been pointed out before.  When accounting for relatively smaller numbers of players who fit into those more elite categories, the more highly-rated recruits still stand a much higher liklehood of turning into the better college players.  Not that some players aren't underrated in high school, or over achievers in college.

2 years 22 weeks ago Just QBs?

I wouldn't argue that a QB couldn't benefit the most, but I find it pretty hard to believe that EE wouldn't help any player.  Heck, pick at random any of the recent articles on virtually every sports site about the importance of the extra practices teams get with bowl games.  They all say something about how important they are for the younger players, and then almost always make some mention of how most Freshman spend the first half of the season trying to get use to their new system, the increased speed of the game, etc.  While certain positions may benefit more, I think that any player would be better off (from a football standpoint) from the extra practices.

That said, unless a kid has a very realistic shot at seeing playing time as a true freshman, I'd also push for completing high school and enrolling over the summer.

2 years 22 weeks ago Agreed

I'd also throw in that if 5* players are more likely to go to the more successful, established programs, they are also less likely to see the field as freshmen, no matter how good they are as a simple result of the depth chart.

2 years 36 weeks ago GoBlue in Asheville!

Mixed scene in Asheville.  Where I watched, there is a great Michigan fan with a great attitude whom I've gotten to watch the game with the last two weeks.  He, my wife, and I had a great time today, thought it was certainly tense on many occasions!

We went crazy at the end, and loved the outcome, as well as Denard's performance.  Down here in SEC/ACC country, the OSU fans who were watching them beat Miami were happy for us, and we were also happy to see the BIG TEN representing themselves well in a number of games.

Unfortunately there were a few Michigan fans (thankfull not sitting by us all the time) who admitted that they almost wanted us to lose so that Rich Rod would get fired.  One woman in particular seem like the type that always wanted something to complain about.  They were *leaving* in the middle of the last drive, and were it not for our chearing, would have been in their car before the winning TD was scored.  Oh, well, we can't all be great fans.

Anyway, Great Game.  Great Win.  ...And plenty of things to work on improving over the next few weeks so that we'll be even better by the time the Big Ten season rolls around.

"The announcement of Slippery Rock's football scores is a tradition at University of Michigan football games, begun in the 1950s by Michigan Stadium's public address announcer. Slippery Rock was so popular with U of M fans that on Sept. 29, 1979, they played in-state rival Shippensburg at Michigan Stadium, in front of 61,143 fans, a record for a Division II football game (Shippensburg won, 45-14). Slippery Rock played a second game at "The Big House" in 1981, attracting 36,719 fans in a 14-13 loss to Wayne State University."

2 years 36 weeks ago Apparently this goes back to the 50's

I can remember attending games in the late 70's and 80's and the Slippery Rock score was always announced... to great applause from virtually the entire stadium when they were winning.  I even called their admission's office at bought a Slippery Rock sweatshirt as  a Christmas gift for my dad (a Michigan alum from the last 60's) one year.  He remembered hearing the scores when he and my mom were students there.

Here's a random source: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze7tsc4/id36.html

"2.  How does a 7,000-student, Division II school get its football scores on TV ?

In the 1950's, the University of Michigan public-address announcer began a traditon of giving Slippery Rock scores.  The crowd reaction( " The audience loved it." )  made an impression on an Associated Press writer named Dave Dials, who later adopted the practice when he hosted the Prudential College Scoreboard show on ABC.
: Sometimes at the end of the show I found myself with a little extratime and they would give me the ' stretch ' sign," Dials, now retired, saidfrom his home in Ohio.  " One day I gave a Slippery Rock score, and theswitchboard lit up.  So the next week I made it a point to do it again.
" Any time I had the time - and I generally found the time to do it - Iwould mention Slippery Rock.  It got to the point where people expected it."
2 years 36 weeks ago My thoughts exactly.  It

My thoughts exactly.  It would seem that he would be a more appealing transfer candidate given another season of practice and some real game experience.  Maybe he hasn't played enough this season and can count if he sits out?

2 years 36 weeks ago Anthony Carter?

It seems like the list is mostly sticking with recent starters or semi-recent top performers, but I'll throw out a suggestion/question... What bout AC?

Was he also plain fast, or simply one of the best receivers ever?

3 years 50 weeks ago Right

Right. There's clearly no chance that a highly regarded lineman recruit who wasn't awesome as a redshirt freshman could have made any significant improvements over the next four years.

3 years 50 weeks ago Tap, tap, tap.

Tap, tap, tap. Is this sarcasm detector working?

I figured most people wouldn't notice that virtually my entire post is a direct quote of the stuff we've been (good-naturedly) making fun of you about in the Dann O'Neill thread, but I didn't expect it to fly entirely over your head. :-)

Point taken though: Dead horse. Beaten. It will receive no further comments from me.

3 years 50 weeks ago The problem is scholarhip limits.

Maybe if there weren't limits on # of scholarships/class. But as we can only take a limited number of players, taking the best ones (as determined by the coaches, not Rivals) seems like a good idea.

3 years 50 weeks ago Really?

Really? I somehow can't imagine O'Neill saying, sorry coach Rod, I was going to change my mind, but some random guy on MGoBlog says he heard from some dude on the team that I quit, so I guess it's a done deal.

If anything he'd be able to make all of us look like morons for prematurely jumping on the story. I just don't see how an online discussion burns any bridges, or makes his return (or not leaving) less likely.

3 years 50 weeks ago I think part of the reason is

I think part of the reason is to prevent coaches from trying to recruit kids from other teams, or the best players from "lesser" teams transferring to bigger named programs once they blow up.

3 years 50 weeks ago Yeah, it was a very tricky surgery...

...and then Weis sued his surgeons twice when he suffered some of the complications which are known to come with the procedure.

3 years 50 weeks ago I believe so.

I believe so. You can also specify teams to which a player can not go and immediately receive a scholarship (like Miami did with Marve). At the end he was choosing between paying his way for a year at Tennessee or receiving a scholarship at Purdue.

3 years 50 weeks ago I hope that everyone here

I hope that everyone here knew what your point was. It was well-written.

But immediately following your discussion of star players with your own high school and college accomplishments implies that you're including yourself in that group (intentional or not). I didn't think you were being a douchenozzle (to borrow the expression) but did find it at least slightly more than minimally humorous, and worth a comment.

In my opinion it was not, however, worth the three comments from me it has now received. Sorry if you took great offense... Only minimal offense was intended!

3 years 50 weeks ago Yes, just elaborating on the

Yes, just elaborating on the concept being discussed on the board that if someone is hoping to avoid all but the most well-confirmed info, or waiting to hear info directly from the source, that the discussion forum of a blog is probably not the ideal place for them. - I do know that Brian does a good job of fact-checking before reporting things here.

3 years 50 weeks ago Everyone knows that blogs are

Everyone knows that blogs are the place for only rock-solid facts, confirmed directly from the source, announced with their explicit approval. Don't you remember Brian's scoop interview with Lloyd Carr breaking the story of his retirement? As I recall, that's how MGoBlog burst onto the public scene in a major way.

3 years 50 weeks ago Dude, Chris was The Man in

Dude, Chris was The Man in high school. He was the second leading tackler on the team, and he played QB. It's been quite a wake up call since he got to college though. :-)

Seriously though, this is still interesting as far as the "All your Forciers are belonging to us" sentiment goes.

3 years 50 weeks ago Totally untrue

Well, I simultaneously dislocated *and* broke my right pinky finger while on the 8th grade team. But wait, hold off on the nasty reply. I know you're going to like this story because I played through it with a small soft cast, some foam... and it was wrapped up! :-)

Seriously though. Take a joke man. I'm sure you were (and are) a better athlete than I, but you have to appreciate getting your chops busted a bit for telling us all that you were the man in High School.

3 years 50 weeks ago Hater

I don't know what you're talking about. He sounds like a real baller. I can't wait to hear more about that "back of the thumb" injury. I mean eff dude, it was wrapped and everything.

3 years 50 weeks ago From Wikipedia

"Furman competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the Paladins. The university is a member of the Southern Conference. In 1988 Furman won the NCAA I-AA National Football Championship. Furman also appeared in the 1985 and 2001 NCAA I-AA National Football Championship game, but lost (to Georgia Southern and Montana, respectively). Furman, Colgate, Lehigh and Richmond remain the only private universities that have appeared in the I-AA Football Championship game, and Furman was the first private school to win it, with Richmond becoming the second 20 years later. Over the past few years, Furman's football team has been consistently ranked in the top 3 spots in the NCAA I-AA polls, and recently climbed to no. 1 in the nation in the latest Sports Network polls [10]. The Paladins have also claimed 12 Southern Conference football titles, more than any school in league history."

3 years 50 weeks ago Tackling

Smith looks pretty dang quick, but I'll agree that was pretty poor tackling. Isn't that Cissoko not only not trying to wrap him up, but also making the effort to roll all the way over to hit Smith with his back? Obviously it's just one clip from one drill, but it brought back bad memories. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of the Smith-esque effort on offense and a lot less of the "hit and bounce" defense this year!

3 years 50 weeks ago Guarantees?

It will be interesting to hear what, if any, guarantees were made regarding a scholarship after this year. I wonder if this is basically a one year tryout, or a three year deal.

3 years 51 weeks ago I read something about this

I read something about this some time ago. My fuzzy recollection is that if an athlete from another sport plays football, they still count against the football scholarship limit (no matter which sport is technically paying their way.) Thus, the fact that we have open scholarship spots allows for the current possibilities of track/B-Ball athletes playing football.

On one hand, as Maize and Blue said, coaches may not risk their jobs to recruit for another sport, but (at a different school) they also may not be willing to risk their jobs if the AD tells them that a certain number of their scholarship spots are going to be used by athletes who are primarily football players. There would certainly be schools where this would happen

I wish I could find the site where I read about this. I these rules came to be when the football scholarship reductions happened.
