|1 year 7 weeks ago||This is the death of Michigan||
This is the death of Michigan Exceptionalism. Any lingering feelings that Michigan was special or different from other colleges in regards to athletics has died under this AD. Despite his history and closeness to the program, Dave Brandon still sees his alma mater as a brand and runs it like a national pizza chain.
Not everything Dave Brandon has done has been bad and he most certainly receives a lot of criticism for fairly innocuous things, but he has fundametally changed the relationship between the AD and the students/fans for the worse.
Furthermore, Brandon and the B1G are some of the fiercest defenders of the "collegiate model" and "amateurism" which is infuriating due to their constant attempts to monetize and brand the shit out of everything. If you want to hide behind "the collegiate model", don't try to run your athletic department like you're the Dallas Cowboys.

He rejoined the US squad for the 2011 Gold Cup after a 2 year abscence and then he came back to the US and joined the Philadelphia Union from 2011-2013. He did well in that Gold Cup and was solid in his time with the Union. He left the Union and went to play for a team in Brazil that released him (Bahia) then he went to Blackpool in England and got cut from their team but continues to train with them.
He's still only 24, though some question whether or not his age is accurate, thinking he's older. If he's really 2 or 3 years older than his listed age, it may have contributed to the phenom hype, a 17 year old that says he's 14 seems much better than he really is.
That said, if he's really only 24, he'd be the 6th youngest guy on this US World Cup squad. He could still get his career back on track and be in his prime for the 2018 World Cup.

For those asking how the Pistons lost their pick and why Dumars is to blame, they traded their first round pick to Charlotte (top 8 protected) with Ben Gordon for Corey Magette. The Pistons had the 8th worst record, so they needed to have none of the teams below them jump into the lottery, bumping them down a slot (after top 3, order is set). Because Cleveland jumped Detroit, they slid to 9, meaning the pick is no longer protected and goes to Charlotte.

I'm not saying that Gordon should get off easy or that his punishment should be lessened, but in the future, every failed test should be a 1 game suspension with a $50k fine.
It should still be against the rules, but not so extreme.
Otherwise we might as well make every violation a lifetime ban from the sport, because these guys "knowingly break the rules". Just because the rule-breaking is done with full knowledge of its against-the-ruledness doesn't mean the punishment is automatically fair/just

Like I said, I loved the trade when they made it, but I guess to me the difference is whether or not they start Manziel this year. If you start Manziel and he has no weapons, he's gonna look really bad. |1 year 12 weeks ago||I agree that's where he||
I agree that's where he should play in the long run, that's why I listed him there initially. But being able to play him at the 4 next year is better for the team, lessening the load that Wilson will have to bear.
|1 year 12 weeks ago||I'm not so worried about him||
I'm not so worried about him physically, but he's a true freshman center in the Big Ten, that's a little worrying. Also he played in a not particularly strong high school league and he didn't play AAU. He'll be good in the long run, but he could seriously struggle at times this year. He's never faced guys like the guys he'll see in the Big Ten this year. He could be physically ready and still struggle.
At least Donnal had the perk of practicing against McGary, Morgan, and Horford for a year while he a redshirted which is why I'm less worried about him.
|1 year 12 weeks ago||I wouldn't go so far as to||
I wouldn't go so far as to say that he won't leave early. Leaving after your Junior year is still considered leaving early. Also, it's fair to say that we didn't see a lot of what Walton could do this year. He was the 3rd or 4th option at best when he was on the floor and he was only a freshman. He was smart enough to play within himself and to not try to do too much. i expect a big jump from Walton and Irvin this year as they're both supremely talented and they both have a year of experience under their belt.
And of course the Beilein Sophomore Leap Certainty Principle

Let's say the coaches banked scholarship offers, this is your roster:
1 - Walton / Spike
Not having the extra wing player would be fatal next year if you get injury/foul trouble. At least 1 guy was necessary to take. If anything you would've banked 1 scholarship by taking MAAR or Dawkins, but they really had to take 1 extra wing player.
|1 year 12 weeks ago||Should we have banked||
Should we have banked scholarships instead of taking Spike and Levert. Spike and Levert helped us get to the national title game and Levert could easily become a lottery pick. It's safe to say that the coaches made the right decision to take those guys instead of banking scholarships.
They deserve the benefit of the doubt at this point.

If MAAR and Dawkins don't pan out and get playing time, they'll probably transfer so that they can play. There's a reason Colton Christian and Carlton Brundidge left, they wanted to get minutes. Offering a scholarship doesn't mean you're necesarily stuck for 4 years if it doesn't work out.

2 of Beilein's highly touted kids were Brundidge and Smotrycz. Recruiting rankings are predicitive but imperfect. They matter, but they're not deterministic. It's to the point where we have to trust Beilein on these late offers. Spike and Levert were both late signing period additions and they've panned out fine.
Both MAAR and Dawkins are good athletes with good size. 2 things you can't coach. I trust the coaches to work with the raw tools.

Glenn Robinson III was a 5* on Rivals on the end of his senior year
I wasn't saying that Dawkins should be a 5* or that he could be as good as GR-III, just that Beilein sees what he likes in a guy and doesn't care about their rankings. Dawkins has a lot of the same traits as GR-III. I'm sure if Dawkins had been committed to UM for a year, he'd be ranked because the talent evaluation sites would've given him a second look.
Again, he's not as good as GR-3, but Beilein went after both guys despite rankings because they possess the traits he values. GR-3 ended up being a lot better.

|1 year 14 weeks ago||Biggest differences from||
Biggest differences from North American sports are promotion/relegation, the lack of playoffs, and international cups/tournaments.
Each country has multiple tiers of professional leagues. At the end of a season, the top 3 teams in one tier move up a tier and the bottom 3 teams move down a tier. It's not accurate to think of these in terms of major and minor leagues, so don't make the mistake of thinking of them that way.
The real prize is to win the league by having the most points at the end of the season (3 pts for a win, 1 for a draw). There are league cups (playoffs) that take place throughout the season that everyone in the league plays in (FA cup in England, Copa del Rey in Spain etc.). Winning the Leage Cup is certainly a big deal, but winning the league is the most important.
The Champions League is the premier international club cup. The top teams in each European league qualify depending on the size/prestige of the league (top 4 in England qualify while teams from smaller leagues like Norway play in play in games). Teams begin by playing in a group stage, much like the world cup, playing home and away fixtures with each team in the group. The top 2 teams from each group advance to knockout stages where Home and Away matches are played with aggregate scoring, in the event of a tie the team with more away goals wins, if away goals are tied, the game goes to extra time/penalties.

Chiefs, Saints, Bucs, Lions all have a chance to make the playoffs.
Chiefs still have a above average defense and now they have a competent passer (not great) with a good supporting offensive cast. There's no way they beat the Broncos, but they could possible get a wildcard. Plus the Raiders are garbage and the Chargers are underacheivers
Saints and Bucs simply because the NFC South has a high turnover rate. Saints get back Payton and have a great O but will be limited by their D.
Bucs should have a good offense and a better D with Revis coming in. Both teams will have trouble beating the Falcons but should both compete for the Wild Card.
Lions will have a dynamic passing Offense but will be limited by their D. No chance they beat the Packers, but they could easily finish ahead of the Bears and Vikings. Chance to compete for the Wild Card.

Obviously neither of us personally know him, so this is all speculation, but I think that since "THE DECISION" there's been a clear shift in how he relates to the media. Much more adversarial and careful now than he was before he left Cleveland.
In regards to your comment about not feeling bad for the medai attention, these papparzzi photographers in LA would be considered stalkers if they didn't sell their photos to the press. I'm all for the First Amendment, but I think it's a travesty that we allow photographers to stalk celebrities when there's obviously laws against stalking for a reason, it's psychologically damaging to the victim.
|2 years 5 weeks ago||I'm not saying that||
I'm not saying that celebrities are free from any sort of agency or responsibility, but that if everyone remembered that famous people are still people, we might be more courteous in our interactions with them (not tweeting Ryan Matthews that we want his mother to get AIDS or taking pictures of celebrties inside their own homes). This isn't to say that they have a hard life and our deserving of capturing our bleeding hearts, but we need to be careful to make sure that we're not contributing to a system that causes people to have psychological breakdowns.
Just because someone has had an "easy life" by our standards doesn't mean they are somehow less deserving of "humane" treatment. That is a sort of sociopathic self-justification that opens us up to complete moral relativism.
When celebrities enter the public-sphere of twitter, they open themselves up to a certain level of scrutiny, that is their choice, but that doesn't make death threats and comments about people's mothers somehow justified.
We need to have a clear line regarding proper interaction between us and celebrities, for too many people the line is "well they sign up for this so they should take it all with a smile". We essentially take all culpability away from the mass of consumers and say that the masses can do whatever they want and if anything bad happens it's all on the celebrity.
The fact is that there is an entire industry in this country built around watching celebrities implode and too many people take joy in watching rich and famous people self-destruct. It's barbaric.
|2 years 5 weeks ago||There are people that are||
There are people that are "famous for being famous" and there are people that are famous for being artists. If someone truly love acting or making music or playing a sport they shouldn't have to choose between having their privacy invaded or giving up on their dreams.
For people like Kim Kardashian, they've obviously signed up for this. For people like Lebron James, you can tell they've grown tired of being in the limelight and just want to do what they love without constant scrutiny.
We place the economic value on these roles by cooperating in the system, so acting like their fame gives us the right to do this to them is self-justifying. Basically saying that we get to invade the privacy of whomever we choose to by valuing what they do.
|2 years 5 weeks ago||We Americans seem to have||
We Americans seem to have this idea that if someone is rich or famous we somehow gain the right to scrutinize every part of their life and invade their privacy.
I assume that Manziel wanted to play football because he loves football, not simply because he wanted to be famous for it. For us to put a 20 yr old under the microscope like this is utterly dehumanizing. It's easy to forget that famous people like Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan are still actual humans, but our inhumane treatment of celebrities often leads them to have these sorts of psychological breakdowns.
If we don't "feel sorry" for people that live under this constant media surveillance, we're contributing to the problem that leads many celebrities to essentially go crazy.

IIRC, the average fumble recovery rate for a defense is around 58%. So you are predicting not just a regression toward the mean, but a movement well past the mean. While I would also predict a significant drop in percentage recovered, I'd still predict a little bit over the mean (probably around 60%) simply due to the fact that we have the grittiest gritty mcgritterson of all time (Kovacs), who simply by being on the field has to put us above average in this category.

I went to UCONN's stadium for a USA v. Czech Republic soccer game in 2010. The stadium was bad and the parking was awful. I drove up from NJ for the game and it took us 3 hours to get from the highway to a parking spot. It was so bad that we decided to just hang out in the stadium for the post game show (got Alexi Lalas' autograph) and to hang out around the team buses after that (got a picture with Clint Dempsey) (I know cool story bro).
Anyway, the stadium is small and not a good place to watch a game, and the gameday staff for parking was horrendous, a lot of the parking was in a neighboring Cabela's parking lot and the rest was on a big field that had one single lane running through it that they would let cars on. My advice is get there ridiculously early (7 hours before kickoff) tailgate and get a great spot and leave right afterwards, otherwise plan on staying there for 3 hours after the game's over.

|2 years 49 weeks ago||I was born and raised in New||
I was born and raised in New Jersey, but my parents were both from West Michigan and my father was a season ticket holder for Football before moving east. I was born to be a Michigan fan and watching games was always something that my Father and I would do together on Saturdays. We've been able to go to a couple games together in the big house (including 2008 Toledo, a painful game that game that brought us even closer together), and I look forward to going to the UM basketball Pre-season NIT game with him this Thanksgiving in NYC and the 2013 football game at UCONN (hooray for UM trips to the East Coast).
Growing up in New Jersey, where College football is not a big deal, I always stood out for my die-hard following of the Maize and Blue. People in my school always knew me as "the Michigan kid" as I think I wore a Michigan shirt, hat, sweatshirt, or jacket just about every day. While my fanhood for the Giants, Yankees, or Nets never got much attention, my love for the Wolverines got the attention of others.
Although my mother is the only one in my family to have ever taken classes at UM (some grad classes for Education, she never ended up getting that degree) we are still a family of UM loyalists. I'm going to be a senior in Undergrad this year and UM will probably be one of two schools not on the East Coast that I will be applying ot for grad school.
