NCAA cannot monitor the quality of education. That is what accreditation organizations are supposed to do. NCAA must hold UNC accountable for mis-representing the education it was providing, but it does not owe these former students anything.

We KNOW Harbaugh is interested. We know this because if Harbaugh was not interested, we would have made offers to other top candidates already.
As long as we do not hear anything about other coaches being offered, Harbaugh is interested. Period.
As soon as Harbaugh turns us down, you will know because a serious offer will be made to another candidate and the news will leak (most likely by the targeted coach's current adminstration). No such news has been leaked, which means Michigan is still on Harbaugh's trail.
All these Harbaugh No/Yes rumors are useless. Harbaugh is interested, that is the only scenario where all these actions fit. You will know very shortly after Harbaugh makes a decision.
Which is why the longer this continues, it is better for Michigan since that means more and more likely that Harbaugh is going to say yes, because saying no takes no time.

Regarding Harbaugh, things need to wait out until the regular season is over. Every other major job has been filled already. The longer this drags out, the chance of landing Harbaugh gets better.
Names being floated in media. If you are an agent worth anything, you HAVE to float your guy's name in the media as a possible candidate. Even if he has no intention of taking the job since it is a future negotiation lever. If you are hearing names that someone like Cowherd (via agents)is trumpeting, that pretty much means that person has no chance for this job and has not been contacted, since...
If you have been contacted and is interested, you are going to keep quiet. Your agent is going to keep quiet. You don't want to jeopardize the deal by flapping your mouth. That is why we probably have not heard a pip about/from Mullen and a couple of other very viable candidates.
Just keep praying that this process drags on if you are pining for Harbaugh. As soon as he says no, I suspect we will sign to a plan B/C within days or even hours.

This is KILLING us since we cannot do any hitch and go to punish over plays and receivers cannot get any separation since most of the separation happens right after the cut.
Gardner is broken beyond recognition. This is really sad to watch.

|26 weeks 5 days ago||I think the better analogy||
I think the better analogy would be a fortune 500 bank failed to have enough internal controls to prevent itself from issuing fraudulent loans. Plenty of banks went out of business for something like that.
What the investigation has proven is that UNC lacks internal controls and oversight to prevent something like this from happening. This may not be the only sham course that they offered (this is the only one they investigated), because it is now proven UNC has no clue when these things happen on their campus. Until they can prove that this was an isolated incident (not even sure how to go about it), they should have their accredation suspended.
This is a classic case of tail waggin the dog. The academic reputation of an institution is FAR greater than any benefit you get from athletics. UNC needs to think real hard about their culture and seriously consider dropping athletics all together. I would recommend that approach if something like this happened at Michigan.

Every program, even the very best, have their ups and downs. We may have some years where we don't even make the tourney, even with Beilein coaching. It will happen. You need to set your expectations accordingly.
The next year's team is going to be very very young. The past couple of years of outcome is an outlier when you have a such young team, not the norm. We will be lucky just to make the tourney. You should be ecstatic if/when we do.
To say that you EXPECT the team to make sweet 16 year after year is doing disservice to the program.

10% of revenue in salaries would be quite generous for most businesses. For example, Apple pays less than that and they make 15 times the revenue (and many tens billions in pure profit than NFL
50% is a very skewed number because NFL players are a very select group. It is comprised of less than 10% of the very best from NCAA. They SHOULD be making a lot more than NCAA players who are not as talented or rare.
10% is probably right in line with what they deserve. If you count in athletes from non revenue sports, they are getting paid too much as it is today.

You are mischaracterizing what I said.
NBA players get paid what they get paid, because they are extremely rare. There isn't another system in the world that says you have to pay top 10% of the workers the same way the top 1% are paid.
There aren't dozens of LeBrons that you can pick up off the street. The NBA players get paid what they get paid because there only few hundred people in the world who can do what they do. There are thousands of NCAA players. The scale is not the same. There is no reason why you should diamond prices for bunch of cubic zirconiums.
That is my pet peeve with all these articles. The vast majority of NCAA players are not unique. There are thousands others who can fill their place (and do every year). To argue that they should be paid like NBA or NFL players who are far rarer is a fallacy.

Why wouldn't the university value gymnasts as much as a football players? The whole point of athletic scholarship was to promote diverse interest among students. If you take the revenue out, there is no difference in value between basketball players and soccer players to the university.

This is just like why programmers working on Bing are getting paid in the same scales as the programmers working on Windows, even though Windows brings hundreds of times more in revenue than Bing.

Statistics gives you probabilities of an event happening. That is same for elections, investments, sports, gambling, etc. They are all treated the same way.

First, insurance is not free. You have to pay for it.
Second, Earlier you go, earlier you will get your first big free agent deal. Age matters in highly athletic sports.
Third, if you get hurt, the insurance is not going to be rewarding as the NBA signing bonus.
Fourth, Nik is already at his maximum draft potential. Staying would only increase the chance that he will be drafted lower.

It is like arguing the university is violating FERPA by releasing enrollment numbers because that is derived from individual student records.
There are facts to these cases that the university can release without violating FERPA, like when the investigation was triggered, who initiated the review, how the board decided to expel a student. There is no reason for university to put up a wall with no recourse.

Hoke's misleading statements are not what bothers me the most. The fact that bothers me is that when Hoke took over, he did not do sufficient investigation to make sure having Gibbons on the team was not going to come back to stain the program.
There is no reason for a coach or the program to adopt, no charges no problem, stance.
He should have reviewed the police report, spoke with Gibbons in earnest and kicked him off the team if he had any doubt.
He may get off this incident on technicality, but if something like this ever happens again, he should be dismissed immediately.

I think this is grossly underestimating the complexity of this issue. College athletics is a very artificial construct built around the foundation of student athlete. It is not merely just a label.
If they are no longer a student and now are employees, why are they only allowed to work for just four years? Why do they have to be admitted? I don't think most university employees are students. Hoke should have used the same criteria the school used, is he more likely than not to have done this act. The police report is bad. Hoke has a duty to not smirch this institution, and he failed. His continued employment should certainly be reviewed.
|1 year 13 weeks ago||Hoke's employment should||
Hoke's employment should CERTAINLY be part of the discussion. There was enough evidence to expel Gibbons. Only reason he was not charged wad because she did not press charges (during which time Lewan tried to intimidate her to not come forward).
Hoke should have looked into thus matter after he got hired and at least read the police report. Reading that police report should have resulted in Gibbons getting kicked off the team, and Lewan as well.
What Hoke knew when and what he did about it should certainly part of this discussion.

I don't think it is too much to ask to suspend the player during an investigation. And even if the charge is dropped, if it is more likely than not that an assault occurred (much lower thrashold than reasonable doubt), that player should not be representing the university.
I would also add that anyone who intimidates the accuser in anyway should also be kicked off the team. There should be zero tolerance for things like this. I am ashamed that Lewan was ever part of this university.
If ANYONE in AD tried to cover this up in any way, they should be fired. Hoke and Brandon included.
