Maybe he got tired of beating a dead horse? While his points are valid, what can he possibly say that we haven't heard ad museum already?

4 years 11 weeks ago Calling him a sniper may be a tad generous

But that doesn't mean he wouldn't be a vast improvement over the collection of bricklayers the Hoosiers have on their roster now.

4 years 20 weeks ago Like it

There was no way they were stopping Hyde in OT. Try for the win there and keep it out of his hands.

4 years 32 weeks ago RE: 2003

I was a student for that game. Yes, that cheer happened. Houston was capable of scoring points on Michigan's defense.

5 years 10 weeks ago For people with a kenpom subscription

This is amusing.

5 years 12 weeks ago I may be in the minority here,

but I hope that doesn't happen. Don't get me wrong, I love KenPom's system as a method of evaluating the true strength of teams (won my tournament pool last year by picking the team ranked higher in KenPom to win), but I think the attributes he uses to rate teams differ from what the selection committee should use to determine tournament-worthiness. The committee should be evaluating teams based on who they played, where they played them, and who they beat, not the per-possession efficiency of a team.

5 years 13 weeks ago I know, right

I swear I saw a tear in Morgan's replacement jersey as well. Thought they might run out of extras.

5 years 19 weeks ago Are tickets already available

Are tickets already available for these games? If so, I bet a ton of Spartan fans have already purchased them in anticipation of MIchigan State playing there. I'm sure their favorite pastime (cheering against Michigan) would be a perfectly acceptable consolation prize.

He's only "blocking Hopkins" in a sense that, once Hopkins hits him, they're engaged and there's no way of him getting out to another defender. Hopkins could have avoided right off the bat, but chose not to.

5 years 33 weeks ago So you're saying it's

So you're saying it's possible that Michigan was spending a blocker on a guy who was ignoring the running back in an effort to  contain Denard when there was no chance that Robinson would keep it? That's even better!

I don't think that's the point is to dismiss Paterno's accomplishments as much as the arrogance that accompanied it. The whole Grand Experiment idea reeks of the belief that they were the only program to do this. Eliminating Penn State would've reduced the number of opportunities, but it wouldn't have eliminated all of them.

It's not a true home game, but to treat this as the same thing as the trips to Oregon or Washington is disingenuous as well, as Michigan is giving up a home simply because Jerry Jones was willing to give the athletic department a huge amount of money.

6 years 6 weeks ago I'm sure there will be a

I'm sure there will be a legal challenge and I'll be interested to see how it turns out, but I'm pretty sure the NFL is going to argue that this is about the way the contracts are structured, not the amount they are for. There was no collusion to curb spending that year, but  Dallas and Washington treated it as a loophole to circumvent any future cap.

6 years 6 weeks ago They normally try to place

They normally try to place the #1 seeds in the regional closest to their campus, with overall #1 getting placed first and overall #4 getting what's left at the end (unless one of them is a host). From there, they generally try to maintain bracket integrity (overall #1 with #8, #9, and #16, etc.) as best they can while following the rules that:

  • Host teams must be placed in their home regional.
  • Avoid interconference matchups in the first round.

Given those statements, I kinda sorta disagree with mfan's belief that they'd put Michigan in St. Paul. I think they'd place Michigan in Green Bay since it's closer. That would then allow them to place Duluth in St. Paul, which is a much shorter trip for their fan base.

6 years 7 weeks ago I imagine it means that they

6 years 26 weeks ago So, you think they take

So, you think they take advantage of it... twice as much?

Anyways, I know this statement is going to annoy certain groups of people, but still: given all the obsessive focus Dantonio (and, by extension, the rest of the team) has had on Michigan ever since he got there, isn't it to be expected that Michigan State is the team that is best prepared to exploit whatever tendencies the team has?

6 years 26 weeks ago State has had the same

State has had the same coaching staff for five years now. Michigan has been changing quarterbacks or offensive systems for four consecutive years. Guess which team can do all sorts of fancy stuff and adjust on the fly and which team has trouble doing anything it didn't explicitly spend practice time on that week.

6 years 28 weeks ago It's not Yost, but it's about

It's not Yost, but it's about the best they could do otherwise. Guaranteeing that they get to play in the state is a pretty good situation.

6 years 29 weeks ago I have to be honest, Brian:

I have to be honest, Brian: you're completely wrong if you think the core customer isn't the players. The athletic department knows that people will continue to donate money and buy tickets and merchandise no matter how much bitching is done on the Internet. A majority of their focus is on determing how to convince 17 year olds with very fickle tastes to come to Ann Arbor.

The insider chatter keeps mentioning the doghouse, and eagle-eyed observers of the season preview of Inside Michigan Football caught him doing something called "log rolling," which I thought was when you tried not to fall off a log into a lake. It turns out to also refer to a punitive activity people inflict on football players. Hopkins is doing it.

6 years 36 weeks ago I wonder if it would be

I wonder if it would be possible to convince the SEC to take VaTech. UVa would let them go and join UNC, Duke, and Maryland in heading to the Big Ten.

It's fun to dream instead of face reality sometimes...

6 years 36 weeks ago I bet there would be a

6 years 37 weeks ago I imagine it'd be doom for

I imagine it'd be doom for non-revenue teams at schools that fail to plan for such a situation. Scholarship reductions in football would invite further stuggles due to lack of competitiveness (unless you think it'd be a NCAA-mandated rule) which would drive down revenues even more. Thankfully, Michigan has always appeared to be one of the best schools in planning ahead and being prepared financially for any scenario.

I haven't seen one report from him that I couldn't have written. He reads message board chatter and makes optimistic predictions or posts "rumors" that are little more than a regurgitation of that material. Better than usual, I would imagine. The night game has probably lowered the demand for OSU tickets this year.

6 years 41 weeks ago The problem is that further

The problem is that further irrelevance (and the resulting financial hit) will force most of them to give up and fold their hockey programs. Hockey already has an exceedingly small number of programs to begin with, and this would also have implications for the size of the NCAA tournament.

6 years 42 weeks ago I don't know about Subway

I don't know about Subway Domer, but I'm pretty sure Her Loyal Sons is being intentionally excluded under the Enlightened Spartan rule.

6 years 42 weeks ago No, I thought he should went

No, I thought he should have went to the spread in 2008. A large part of that reasoning, though, is that I believe the 2008 offense was destined to be a gigantic pile of fail no matter what scheme it ran. I have no problem with Borges eventually moving to his ideal offense (to be fully implemented by either Gardner or Morris), but I think the potential of the current players would justify a more gradual transition this time around.

6 years 42 weeks ago You are correct that no

You are correct that no scheme is inherently better than another, but there is one scheme that the returning core of Michigan's offense has been recruited for and been practicing for the last three years. That scheme is the one that the players are most likely to execute properly.

6 years 42 weeks ago That statement is not

That statement is not condemning the offense, but that's not the type of statement Brian is arguing against. He's arguing against the belief that Michigan must move away from the spread in order to have any real success. That offense would've been plenty good enough to succeed if it wasn't teamed with the worst defense in Michigan history.

6 years 42 weeks ago (other than the obvious lack

(other than the obvious lack of ability to make a field goal)

I can't believe how much this gets overlooked, though. How much worse would any offense look if it was touchdown or nothing when you got to the red zone?

6 years 42 weeks ago But they have very little

But they have very little control over how many points the other team scores (turnovers leading to scores are the exception here). Nobody would've been so upset over the offense's first half performance if the defense hadn't given up 28 points. Since the defense was a complete atrocity, though, people felt it was acceptable to condemn the offense.

6 years 43 weeks ago He could be right, but it's

He could be right, but it's not because he knows anything. He's just reading the internet gossip and taking a flying leap in hopes that it turns out to be true. Reminds me a lot of that reporter who claimed that Rodriguez was fired before he even met with Brandon back in Janurary.

6 years 43 weeks ago Percentages would be useful

Percentages would be useful if they weren't completely arbitrary and gamed to favor your point of view.

Several people have mentioned it already in this thread, but I'll repeat it: NBA teams draft off potential, not production. There is little he could have done next year to change their opinion on his potential, making those percentages you stated unrealistically optimistic. He couldn't have improved his value enough to justify giving up a year's pay.

6 years 43 weeks ago That assessment sounds an

That assessment sounds an awful lot like where he was projected this year. There were plenty of mocks where he was projected to go into the mid-20s this year. Things just fell poorly and he went 41st.

You're advocating a position where he doesn't improve his stock at all and loses a year's salary. He made the right choice.

They wouldn't sign them all immediately because of money and roster spots. Why take up spots at the bottom of the roster with people who you don't think will be ready for 3 years (and pay them enough to convince them to sign) when you can let them get seasoning in college for free and only pay them when they're ready to contribute?

This is the same reason college hockey players are drafted right out of high school but don't get signed until they're clearly ready (and that's with a viable minor league to drop them into).

I don't think Pairwise is a good idea for CBB because the basketball committee hasn't proven itself incapable of leaving out brand name teams having subpar seasons. My hockey knowledge isn't deep enough to provide specific examples (is anybody from HSR around?),  but there were several instances in the 90's of name teams underachieving and still getting in the tournament ahead of teams that were clearly more deserving. Since the basketball committee has shown that they can won't make the same type of decision (for example, North Carolina last year), there is no need to move their sport to a flimsy mathematical model for tournament selection.

Virginia was able to force Virginia Tech in because UNC and Duke were adamantly opposed to any and all expansion scenarios and three no votes killed any ACC offer. Thus, Virginia was able to block Syracuse's offer and force the ACC to take VT instead.

So, Iowa's power is solely dependent on other Big Ten schools' resistance to expansion. If that number plus Iowa is great enough to kill any offer, Iowa State has life. Judging by the lack of any rumors about this, though, I'm guessing it's not the case.
