but I hope that doesn't happen. Don't get me wrong, I love KenPom's system as a method of evaluating the true strength of teams (won my tournament pool last year by picking the team ranked higher in KenPom to win), but I think the attributes he uses to rate teams differ from what the selection committee should use to determine tournament-worthiness. The committee should be evaluating teams based on who they played, where they played them, and who they beat, not the per-possession efficiency of a team. |

I don't think that's the point is to dismiss Paterno's accomplishments as much as the arrogance that accompanied it. I'm sure there will be a legal challenge and I'll be interested to see how it turns out, but I'm pretty sure the NFL is going to argue that this is about the way the contracts are structured, not the amount they are for. There was no collusion to curb spending that year, but Dallas and Washington treated it as a loophole to circumvent any future cap. |

They normally try to place the #1 seeds in the regional closest to their campus, with overall #1 getting placed first and overall #4 getting what's left at the end (unless one of them is a host). From there, they generally try to maintain bracket integrity (overall #1 with #8, #9, and #16, etc.) as best they can while following the rules that:
Given those statements, I kinda sorta disagree with mfan's belief that they'd put Michigan in St. Paul. I think they'd place Michigan in Green Bay since it's closer. That would then allow them to place Duluth in St. Paul, which is a much shorter trip for their fan base. |

I imagine it'd be doom for non-revenue teams at schools that fail to plan for such a situation. Thankfully, Michigan has always appeared to be one of the best schools in planning ahead and being prepared financially for any scenario. |

6 years 42 weeks ago | No, I thought he should went |
No, I thought he should have went to the spread in 2008. A large part of that reasoning, though, is that I believe the 2008 offense was destined to be a gigantic pile of fail no matter what scheme it ran. I have no problem with Borges eventually moving to his ideal offense (to be fully implemented by either Gardner or Morris), but I think the potential of the current players would justify a more gradual transition this time around. |
6 years 42 weeks ago | You are correct that no |
You are correct that no scheme is inherently better than another, but there is one scheme that the returning core of Michigan's offense has been recruited for and been practicing for the last three years. That scheme is the one that the players are most likely to execute properly. |
6 years 42 weeks ago | That statement is not |
That statement is not condemning the offense, but that's not the type of statement Brian is arguing against. He's arguing against the belief that Michigan must move away from the spread in order to have any real success. That offense would've been plenty good enough to succeed if it wasn't teamed with the worst defense in Michigan history. |
6 years 42 weeks ago | (other than the obvious lack |
I can't believe how much this gets overlooked, though. How much worse would any offense look if it was touchdown or nothing when you got to the red zone? |
6 years 42 weeks ago | But they have very little |
But they have very little control over how many points the other team scores (turnovers leading to scores are the exception here). Nobody would've been so upset over the offense's first half performance if the defense hadn't given up 28 points. Since the defense was a complete atrocity, though, people felt it was acceptable to condemn the offense. |

He could be right, but it's not because he knows anything. He's just reading the internet gossip and taking a flying leap in hopes that it turns out to be true. Reminds me a lot of that reporter who claimed that Rodriguez was fired before he even met with Brandon back in Janurary. |

Percentages would be useful if they weren't completely arbitrary and gamed to favor your point of view. Several people have mentioned it already in this thread, but I'll repeat it: NBA teams draft off potential, not production. There is little he could have done next year to change their opinion on his potential, making those percentages you stated unrealistically optimistic. He couldn't have improved his value enough to justify giving up a year's pay. |

That assessment sounds an awful lot like where he was projected this year. There were plenty of mocks where he was projected to go into the mid-20s this year. Things just fell poorly and he went 41st. You're advocating a position where he doesn't improve his stock at all and loses a year's salary. He made the right choice. |

They wouldn't sign them all immediately because of money and roster spots. Why take up spots at the bottom of the roster with people who you don't think will be ready for 3 years (and pay them enough to convince them to sign) when you can let them get seasoning in college for free and only pay them when they're ready to contribute? This is the same reason college hockey players are drafted right out of high school but don't get signed until they're clearly ready (and that's with a viable minor league to drop them into). |

My wife (Purdue grad school, St. Norberts undergrad, somewhat angry that they are showing the Michigan game tonight instead of the D3 championship game her Green Knights are involved in, as much as a neutral party as I'm going to find) wonders why there is even a controversy. Your state and university has done the Big Ten no favors by being a complete embarassment, support-wise, for years and completely leeching of the money all the other schools have generated. Minnesotans want to take the one positive contribution they have and keep it for themselves. |

7 years 8 weeks ago | I don't think Pairwise |
I don't think Pairwise is a good idea for CBB because the basketball committee hasn't proven itself incapable of leaving out brand name teams having subpar seasons. My hockey knowledge isn't deep enough to provide specific examples (is anybody from HSR around?), but there were several instances in the 90's of name teams underachieving and still getting in the tournament ahead of teams that were clearly more deserving. Since the basketball committee has shown that they can won't make the same type of decision (for example, North Carolina last year), there is no need to move their sport to a flimsy mathematical model for tournament selection. |

His utility is to threaten a bubble screen, except Purdue ignored it because Denard's passing suffered greatly in the poor conditions. It's kind of what Brian was talking about in the section after the first picture. |

Bring in Casteel gets everybody on the defensive staff on the same page, gets a coordinator that really truly understands the scheme being run, and gets a person who can probably get the players to execute better. These things matter far more than what the scheme is. |

To me, that sounds like an attempt to provide a non-answer to a ridiculously loaded question. Rodriguez knew people were going to jump to all sorts of conclusions based on it (like you just did), so he made as vague of a response as possible. Didn't want to make people think Robinson's done at the end of the year, didn't want people to think he was reneging on a promise should there be a staff change anytime in the future. |

7 years 27 weeks ago | Time for a "I played in high |
Time for a "I played in high school" response: We had a trick play called Transcontinental that was similar but not quite the same. It involved a handoff to the running back, who acted like he was running a sweep before turning around and passing back to the QB. The quarterback also took off downfield instead of setting up for a screen like Michigan does. The only time we ran it, it got picked off and returned for a touchdown. |
7 years 28 weeks ago | i just have a hard time |
Yeah, but I don't think he'd be here if he wasn't willing to work with it. We'd have a 2007-like mess if that was the case. I agree with the first sentence, though. People have to look at what options are available for the secondary and stop thinking some magical scheme change is the answer. |
7 years 29 weeks ago | TGDCD |
Brian, this play seemed very TGDCD-ish to me, at least with the QB-RB exchange. Are the lineman just not blocking the same way other teams do on that counter draw? EDIT: Awwww, screw you lightbox. Go to 3:15 of the video. |

It happens because the game that DirecTV is showing on 209 is also being shown by your local ABC station. By some FCC agreement or something, they always black out the cable station so that you have to watch it on the local station. I keep hoping they add in an HD oveflow channel soon. |

You have to remember that he's writing this article for the entire CFB community, not just Michigan fans. Turner's departure is old news for us and we're quite familiar with the people who are no longer in the secondary, but there is a lot of stuff that Hinton needs to explain to people in other fanbases. |

It's some fun logic: since Saban is able to shed enough players every year to get down to 85, Brian was completely incorrect in stating that Alabama signs way more recruits than he has open spaces for. Therefore, MGoBlog has never made a correct report and everything Brian says should be treated as complete hogwash. |

7 years 45 weeks ago | Eh... |
I'm taking this from somebody at Frank the Tank's site or Burnt Orange Nation. I forget where exactly I saw it but it's somebody else's point that I'm parroting. Anyways... Virginia was able to force Virginia Tech in because UNC and Duke were adamantly opposed to any and all expansion scenarios and three no votes killed any ACC offer. Thus, Virginia was able to block Syracuse's offer and force the ACC to take VT instead. So, Iowa's power is solely dependent on other Big Ten schools' resistance to expansion. If that number plus Iowa is great enough to kill any offer, Iowa State has life. Judging by the lack of any rumors about this, though, I'm guessing it's not the case. |
