There's going to be a ton of speculation on why he transfered, and only Jabrill really knows why. I know he did say that he just wasn't happy at Bosco. Had nothing to do with sports, but rather he had friends at Paramus that he felt closer to. Also mentioned Paramus' academics, but I have to think that all elite private schools in the area are pretty good academic institutions as well. |

He has played CB. His freshman and sophomore year he played CB at Don Bosco and won national freshman and sophomore of the year (probably partially because Bosco is a national HS powerhouse). He transferred to Paramus, and they have him play safety/nickel. I'm not sure why, but putting him there probably makes him more active in a high school D than just leaving him wide and having offenses just stay away from him. |

One small comment: Peppers may not play CB for Paramus, but he did play CB his freshman and sophomore year at Don Bosco where he won national Freshman and Sophomore of the year. So learning that position will not be entirely foreign. |

I guess that's just the catch for me; I don't think Borges has ever game planned around a bad match-up. |
| 1 day 19 hours ago | I believe I can infer your |
I believe I can infer your intent was to try and belittle me for, one, my use of the colloquial phrasing 'dunno', and second, for my belief that the bubble screen is a more effective play than an RB trucking a DN when said DB is sneaking inside instead of covering the slot receiver. Since you use Bama and their lack of bubble screens as an example, that tells me you didn't actually read my post considering I specifically stated I do not believe we can compare ourselves to Bama considering the talent differential. All while with dripping sarcasm and no substance which serves no purpose other than the type of self gratification a 5th grader gets for making fun if someone's shoes. If you are that concerned with the use of 'dunno' there are ways to do that without acting like a douchebag. If you really think the bubble screen is not worth sacrificing a run play, there are ways to do that as well. So, again, thank you for contributing nothing to this discussion. |
| 1 day 19 hours ago | Maybe I should clarify the |
Maybe I should clarify the 'out-execution' thing. In the Borges (as we've seen it) offense, each player has to win one-on-one match ups. Your center needs to move a 320 lbs nose tackle. Your guards have to effectively pull. Your WRs need to beat their DBs. Your QB needs pinpoint passing. In the RR offense (for example), you couldn't block that NT? Then don't and just option him. Set up QB isos to get receivers who have no DB on them. Pulling was less emphasized so the complicated steps involved in pulling didn't mean death to an interior run game when you have someone who can't do it well. Now Im not saying the spread us the answer, but Borges seemingly is taking the attitude that if your center can't move that NT (out execute him) then we're just screwed. While RR's, and all offenses, require execution, other OC's can change the structure if the offense to adjust when someone just can't do it well. Bama and USC under Carroll are the only teams I can think of that we're able to win all these one on one match-ups and run that offense a really high level. |

Thank you for contributing absolutely nothing to this conservation. |
| 1 day 21 hours ago | Wow, this is just amazing |
Wow, this is just amazing that you got the interview. After reading these a few times, I have to say that there a few things that scare me about the future of the offense. Does he really think that the defense can't be good if the offense plays up tempo? He doesn't like bubble screens because he would rather an RB truck a DB than throw to the outside where there's no one to tackle him? He mentioned out-executing in the last interivew as why things don't work. A run that doesn't gain yards is OK if you can get 35 yards off play action. But why do the bad run 4 times on critical 3rd and 4th downs? Why no other different types of plays. I dunno. I suppose I'll still withhold final judgement, but that kind of stuff just screams "dinosaur offense" to me. I just don't think we can Alabama people because, even as good recruiting as we're doing, we still don't have that kind of talent (and this assumes we also have the same level of coaching as Saban's staff, which is also probably not likely all the way through the coaching staff). |

I've re-read this a few times, and I've decided I really don't like the last quote from Borges. It seems like that classic 'execution' quote that means the OC believes they don't need to scheme in order to win. |

Isn't Jones 6'4"? He measured that at the most recent camp he was at. That just screams gaurd to me, and we have plenty of interior OL. We need a prototypical tackle. I like Johnson and his frame, but I really have no idea where we stand with him. If we can't get someone like that, then I would also be OK waiting until they find someone they like with a 6'6" or 6'7" from and long arms. Even if it's a rawer prospect, we need tackles on the roster. |

Man, I'm really impressed with how great ESPN is evaluating this cycle. But seriously, I still don't think we have the #1 class in signing day; class will be too small. If we get top-10 I'll be happy. If we get top-5, then we're looking to have reeled in Hand, McDowell, Bars, Wesphal, Scott, etc...and that would be epic. |
| 1 week 2 hours ago | Morris' ceiling is just so |
Morris' ceiling is just so high because of that arm. He has some of the best arm strength of any QB prospect I've seen since Mallett. But he's raw. As you mentioned, he's a gunslinger, and tries to rocket everything it seems like. Consistancy is also an issue, as has been pointed out. Like in the UA game, he had some poor throws, but he also probably had the best throw of the game. Everybody forgets it because it ended up incomplete, but he threw a perfect ball on a long fade to Treadwell in the endzone. Treadwell was very well covered by Hargreaves (last year's best CB), but Morris put it high and away right in stride, so only Treadwell could get it. Treadwell went up, got both hands on it, and then lost it when Hargreaves got a hand on it asTreadwell was bringing it into his body. Treadwell holds onto that and Morris' stat line looks a lot better. Did anybody else even throw a TD in that game? Anyway, Morris' may not be sure thing, but if he can harness that potential and find consistancy, then he can be that proverbial 'special' talent. |
| 1 week 3 hours ago | Am I the only one that kind |
Am I the only one that kind of wants us to play Appy St again? I mean, not playing them again is never going to erase The Horror. It will suck to have to watch the endless highlight replays leading up to the game. But if we come out and crush them, then, eh, now we no longer have a losing record to them, and anytime someone brings The Horror up, we could just respond "56-7" or something like that which I hope the score will be. Bam, natural order restored. If I were Appy St., I wouldn't have taken the game. A loss takes some of the luster off the first game. A loss just proves The Horror was one of those freak upsets that happens in sports. |

| 1 week 1 day ago | You'll notice I never said |
You'll notice I never said alternate uniforms were the key to attracting students. But I do believe they can be a small part of a bigger push to create some more excitement surrounding gamedays. And as far as recruiting, first, every single one of those top recruiting teams have done alternate uniforms recently. Heck, ND went crazy alternate this year and last. But you can't just pull out that list and say "alternate uniforms aren't needed". That list has a team which has probably the best (or at least most successful) coach of the last half century (Alabama) in a region stocked with talent, then a list of the major schools in the most talent producing states: Ohio, Fl, heck the south in general of Alabama, Lousiana, Texas, Georgia. UM does not have those advantages right now. I could also counter with Oregon as the extreme example of putting a school on the map with major re-branding and a savy coacing hire. I don't think an alternate uniform will sell a recruit, but it can make a recruit think to himself 'cool', and if that little bit puts us over the edge, then I'll take it. Being the best team is the most important thing (as long as the colors are still Maize and Blue, and the helmets have wings. I still think that shouldn't be touched). |
| 1 week 1 day ago | I dunno, from everything I've |
I dunno, from everything I've heard, the players and recruits really do like alternate uniforms. And frankly, if this is part of what it takes (I know it's not the only thing) to keep up with today's youth, then I'm all for it. We can't fill our student section, and those students are going to be the future alumni base that will support UM and its sports for years to come. ESPN's Big Ten Blog actually just had an article on this very subject. Things need to be done to enhance the gameday experience for today's kids. It was different for us older folks (I'm not really that old), who went to these games as kids. Then gamedays didn't have to compete with 70" HD screens and the increasingly technological and 'short attention span' twitter type world we have now. Alternate uniforms isn't some magic bullet, but it might be a small step toward ensuring the youth today are actually excited about college football, UM, and acutally going to the game. |

Oklahoma borders Texas, one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the nation, and gets a lot of prospects from there. Kansas St popped up the last two years, and did previously during the Sproles years; Snyder is a good coach. But even they haven't reach the consistancy. And yes, UW is the exception to the isolated, low "talent", team that everybody always points to (which also plays in the terrible B1G). But there's a reason they're the exception: it's because they're like the only one whose been able to do that. I wouldn't want to have to be the exception to the rule if I were Nebraska. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | College football has changed, |
College football has changed, and Nebraka geographically and demographically is being put behind the eight ball. Not to mention the recruiting game has changed, and depending on official visits from a prospects senior season is putting them way behind in the race for the best as well. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | Eh, he did OK. I mean, he |
Eh, he did OK. I mean, he held onto Hackenberg and Breneman, which were the two 5 star headliners, both at the two positions O'Brian is known for developing. And both were big PSU fans in the first place. Other than that, they lost a lot of talent. That OL that went to Pitt, DT Webb, Ross Douglass...those were all 4 or 5 star types that left after the sanctions. Look at this class so far: they've got some decent talent. Some low 4 star players. But the recruiting isn't up to UM or OSU. It's more like Nebraska. Let me put it this way. If we lose Peppers to a school that will have the most crippling scholarship reductions since the Pony Excess for the better part of the decade, one that can't go to a bowl or play in the champ game for half his time at the school, has a coach whose only head coaching accomplishment is NOT going .500 (admittidly, a decent accomplishment), and who has already interviewed for an NFL position after one season? All the while we have Greg Freakin' Mattison recruiting him and coaching him? Well, if we lose him to PSU, then that will be an epic fail on the staff's part. |

So you're telling me that if Trey Burke just worked as hard as he did at UM for two years, but didn't go to college and instead trained in his driveway and at a gym, he would still have the opportunity to go number 1 overall in this year's draft? Heck, even if he did the same, but at SDSU for two years? If you believe that, then I guess there's no point in debating cause we are on totally different wavelengths. Oh, and you won't find me arguing with you about the out of control arms race in terms of spending college athletics has become. |

I knew what I was getting into before I started down the path of student debt, and I'm happy with my decision, but it still doesn't change the fact that the debt sucks. And you say I have the choice to attend a cheaper university or not to attend college. But then you argue athletes don't have that choice? Where does it say in any professional league that you HAVE to attend college? You don't want to put in the work for a college program? Ok, then don't go. If you're a basketball player, then just sit out one year after you finish high school. NFL? Then sit out three years. Don't risk injury, don't let an oranization make million off you. Then you can just jump right into a professional team. Profit. |

I agree it's symbiotic. Would Burke receive the same employment opportunities he's currently receiving (i.e. potential 1st pick in draft and immediate multimillionaire) if he didn't come to UM and receive the coaching he did and the exposure UM provides? Sure there are many big time schools that may have been able to provide the same, but somehow I doubt he has the same opportunity he has now if he goes to South Dakota St. Does the University get boosted revenues over baseline because Burke is leading the team in an historic season? Absolutely. But it's not like UM is some vampiric being that's sucking the life out of the down trodden student athlete making billions to buy new yachts laughing evilly the entire time. It's a serious academic institution where profits inevitably lead to other people receiving educations as well as lots of other pursuits that benefit society. |

Not counting Thomas in here either if they really want to move him to full time corner. | 2 weeks 6 days ago | The one thing really against |
The one thing really against us for the division crown is schedule. MSU's cross divison games are Purdue, Illinois, and Indiana. Nebraska's are Illinois, Purdue and PSU. We get PSU, OSU and Ind. So we play probably 3 of the 4 toughest legends division teams, one of which is by far the best. MSU plays one, the worst of the top 4 (Ind), and Neb plays 3 and 4 (PSU and Ind). Basically, our divisional games are CRAZY important this year. Need to beat both MSU and Neb to keep a cushion. At least NW has to play OSU and UW, so that gives a little leeway in the race against them. |
| 2 weeks 6 days ago | Both the Football Study Hall |
Both the Football Study Hall and Football Outsider's models use past samples of 5 years. Both have 3 of those 5 years being the Rich Rod years. I think UM may be one of those 'exception' teams where the sample data doesn't do nearly as good of a job predicting performance as other team's. |
| 2 weeks 6 days ago | For those wondering, in |
For those wondering, in addition to the usual returning starters, what positions, etc that most of these models use, Football Outsiders also uses a 5 year program 'rating' using all the stats from the past 5 years to predict upcoming success. So bascially, right now that includes the seasons 2008-2012, aka the lowest of the low for the UM program. If you look at their tables, we currently have a program efficiency rating of 29, which is one ahead of Iowa and 5 behind MSU. The lowest point we had was after the 2010 season, when we were 50 in the nation. What does this mean? Not entirely sure, but eyeball tests suggest we are out performing our program efficency rating. |
| 3 weeks 32 min ago | I feel like this year sets up |
I feel like this year sets up for a weird year for statistical models. Like the QB switch, and offensive philosophy switch probably messes up a bunch of the predictive measures these models normally use. And then we lose starters like Demens, but then again, do we really lose a starter? Because Morgan, another starter slides over, and Ross was playing starting level minutes by the end of the year last year. And then we lose Floyd at CB, but gain Countess back, who is an upgrade and going into the 2012 season everyone was calling him our best defender. We are a young team for sure, but 7-5 seems crazy pessimistic to me. 2012 was one of those years where statisical models don't really grasp what went on with the team, and what will going forward. |

Yep, and like every other major QB today as well. ESPN just had a huge fluff piece on Manziel working with the guy. Also Newton was one of his projects. Did Martinez work with him last off season as well, or did he work with a different QB coach? |

Disagree on even that. A UM pre-med also nothing to scoff at. Hell, really any undergrad is fine as long as you do well and give the appropriate effort. My sister did her undergrad at MSU and then did her PhD in biochem at Yale. Frankly, if you plan on doing any post grad work, your undergrad becomes more irrelevant as long as you do a great job at it. Undergrad really matters if you want to take that undergrad degree straight into the work place. |

What the hell was everybody supposed to think? Hood had been very up-front and vocal that ND was his favorite pretty much his entire recruitment. Then he suddenly says "I need to stay closer to home", and listed UNC as his leader. I fee like this ND lean is one of the self pepetuation things. Someone posted that he's an ND lean, and then it kind of spread, and now everybody is saying it so it becomes the "truth". However, I've not read from an actual insider that he's an ND lean (caveat is that I don't have subs to all the services so I don't know what everybody is saying). The person we all trust the most on this issue is not sure what he's thinking. The impression was that he was very high on UM earlier, but now it is not certain. He was entertaining the southern schools seriously. At this point, I don't think anybody except Alex really knows what he's doing. |

Isn't this a lot like the base coverage MSU uses? I'm not sure what their LB's do, but their safeties read the #2 and the act appropriately; either by reading run, short pass, or deep pass, and then coverage is adjusted in the secondary. I'm not exactly sure what their corners do on the reads, bit I was under the impression it's not always just drop into a deep quarter coverage. Whatever it is, It may have taken them 4 years to achieve it at a high level, but it has resulted in a very consistently good pass defense and safeties that are up in run support at appropriate times. |

That seems an incredibly optimistic list. Of that, Peppers, McDowell, and Westphal are by far the best best best. Watson would be, but Winovich may take is spot before Watson has the chance to visit and commit. Hand we're still behind VT, but not out of it. I haven't gotten the vibe Scott loves us (same with Holmes), and neither may have a spot if KJ Williams beats them to the punch. Bars is looking less and less likely as well. I don't think he has a ton of loyalty to UM just because of Blake. His other brother plays for PSU, and his dad played for ND. But if we somehow manage that haul...holy shit that would be EPIC. But I don't think we do. |

Am I the only one that finds Roby undisciplined? The impression I got from him, and from OSU fans, was that he never saw a route he didn't bite on. He had a ton of pass break-ups and INTs, but I kind of got the impression that as more because the B1G had an absolute wreckage of passing offenses this year. Dunno, maybe I'm wrong. |

This just a bad situation. You ask a guy to express his personal beliefs (one which he has expressed openly before), and then you don't like his answer. I don't agree with him at all, but he is entitled to his opinion, and I think it would be wrong to the fire or suspend a guy based on expressing his religious beliefs when prompted on a show. Now if he starts holding anti-gay rallies or something, it starts to cross a different line. |
| 3 weeks 3 days ago | Tenative starting DT might |
Tenative starting DT might not be a whole lot better...for both Thomas and the interior DL as a whole. But who knows; maybe he'll be amazing. Just that a move like heir-apparent MLB (although I think most people looked at him in high school and said DE all the way) to DT doesn't usually mean great things are ahead. |
| 3 weeks 3 days ago | Probably depends on what you |
Probably depends on what you want. Westphal is more a developmental corner, but if he can grow into his still growing frame, he could be truely elite. Webb is far more refined and more near his ceiling, but it is a very high ceiling as well. He's crazy athletic already. I would rather have Webb because he goes to a UM pipeline and will now be playing against us every year. But I would be more that happy with Wesphal as well. This, of course, is contingent on us getting Peppers. If we don't, then losing Webb hurts a lot. |
| 3 weeks 3 days ago | Depends how you measure |
Depends how you measure 'talent.' You're right though that the top-3 are all very high, nationally elite recruits (Harris, McDowell, Webb). After that you've got some good players like Marshall and Drake, and then it's more of generic three starts. Compare that to 2011 when there wasn't really a top-50 in the nation type player, but there were 10 recruits that both UM and MSU offered before May; very deep year. Sparty called the 2011 'one of the least talented' in they could remember probably because they didn't get many of those 10 offers. But I thought it was a very talented year because of the depth. I also think this is a very talented year because I'm not sure when we'll see that much solid talent again at the very high end. Let's not be Sparty here. |
| 3 weeks 3 days ago | He's all MSU. Can't win them |
He's all MSU. Can't win them all. At times we benefit from it too in the state of Ohio, but sometimes kids just want to be different, or really like a school that's not the powerhouse everyone 'pegged' a big prospect to go to. Good luck to him, he's a good prospect. |
| 3 weeks 4 days ago | But they have Noah Spence and |
But they have Noah Spence and Adolphus Washington! That's like, what, 30 tackles and 2 or 3 sacks between the two of them returning from last year! But seriously, they do have some great talent on the defensive side. But a lot of it's still young. If it blooms into the projections based on recruiting rankings, they'll have an elite D. I think. The one thing I can say about OSU's D even from last year, which also had really good talent (probably better than UM's raw talent) is that they play undisciplined. That could sink the D no matter how talented they are. |

Yeah, I thought UM came out pretty rosy in this. To a certain extent OSu as well considering they don't have to play Wisconsin every year now, and the other big program in their division PSU has to play UM every year now as well. |
| 3 weeks 4 days ago | I think just the opposite. I |
I think just the opposite. I think it's ridiculous to think that any undefeated brand name team will be left out of the playoff no matter now easy the schedule. This 'strength of schedule' stuff is just an entire load of crap. All that matters is wins, so any team SHOULD schedule teams for wins. Humans will always have the final say, and I'll believe humans will put an undefeated ND team behind a one loss Oregon team when I see it. |

| 3 weeks 4 days ago | Yeah. This was exactly my |
Yeah. This was exactly my thought. It like they're trying to keep the biggest brands down when the B1G is already suffering a major image problem. I don't think this is a conspiracy or anything, but probably just a mis-guided attempt to get 'better' games. I only think it hurts the B1G in he end though. |
| 3 weeks 4 days ago | ESPN has a couple articles |
ESPN has a couple articles up. It's in one of them. |
| 3 weeks 4 days ago | I think you completely |
I think you completely mis-read the post. Delano said they will purposefully make the cross-overs so that the top teams from each division play each other more often. This sets up for the best teams to have depressed records because they will have to play artificially (not luck based) more difficult schedules. This has nothing to do with divisional alignment. The SEC does not do this. They do not purposefully schedule Bama, LSU and A&M to play UF, UGA, and SCar every year and let the middle/bottom teams get a pass. |
| 3 weeks 4 days ago | So does anybody think the |
So does anybody think the "parity based scheduling" for cross-overs is stupid? The B1G already has a bad image from bowl games, and now they're purposefully going to make the best teams play each other more often than crappy team? Sure, it makes for better games, but it also increases the chances of a mid-level team slipping into a high level bowl game to which they will be over matched because the big boys are busy hurt each other's records. |
| 3 weeks 5 days ago | Huh? And Ohio is going to |
Huh? And Ohio is going to have to beat us to do the same. So what? We'd pretty much have to beat them anyway in any year we would hope to win the B1G championship or our division. We'll play them every year in any alignment, so this is the best. |

That was one of the things that jumped out to me, is that he has, and I mean this almost literally, no moves in the open field. He does that stop moving, short, choppy, step thing when a defender gets near him like he wants to juke, but really doesn't know how to. Now, that could change with more development considering he's only been playing football for like 2 years. I think we could really use one of those kind of receivers to pass to underneath and then be a YAC machine. Leapers and jump-ball threats we have a plenty. |
| 4 weeks 4 hours ago | Possibly. Basically any of |
Possibly. Basically any of the teams outside UM/OSU and the east coast teams which have literally no plausible argument to go to the West would be unhappy about being in the East with the traditional powers. If IU went West, then Purdue would probably be unhappy. But unlike IU and Purdue, MSU is the one with the huge inferiority complex that's convinced of their eternal greatness after two great years in the past 40. I have an easier time thinking IU and Purdue are probably more like "whatever, it's not like we were going to be really competing for championships regularly not matter what division we were in." |

I wouldn't every bother with this exercise. Does Hoke get Mattison in 08? Does he get Borges, or does Parrish decide to come with him to UM instead of staying at Ball State? Would we have gotten the renovations that were started when Rodriguez walked in and balked at the state of our facilities (remember he basically got the weight room overhauled all by himself)? Would Hoke even have been as good, or did he need the extra two years in SDSU to refine his craft? There was still a ton of issues with that team down the pipeline; lots of seeming additude issues. Would it have been the disaster of 2008? No probably not, but what happened, happened, and we cleaned a lot of bad weight off the program in the ensuing painful process. Now the ceiling seems so high for the program; even higher than the end of the Carr years. Let's just run with that. |

Yeah it seems pretty odd that Strobel was the one moved inside. We all knew one of the 5/3 tech type guys we brought in for 2012 would move inside (Wormley, Godin, Strobel), but it's strange the one seemingly least fit got reps there. However, they may feel his ultimate position is there and he's just getting early reps. When Tressel offered him, it was for the 3-tech spot by the way, so our coaches weren't the only ones thinking this. |

Because more than likely they won't. I feel a one or two loss season going into the UM game is a much more reasonable expectation, even for a really good team |
