Oregon has no sales tax, so it depends more heavily on its income and property taxes. Makes it tough on retirees, many of whom limit purchases but can't avoid the two primary forms of taxation. Washington state has sales tax and lower income and property taxes.
On the other hand, having lived in Oregon since 1980, I must say the quality of life is fantastic.

Ten years ago, we had someone come out to sweep our chimney from "The Mad Hatter Chimney Sweeping." When I looked them up five years ago, they had changed the name to "The Happy Hatter Chimney Sweeping", with the tagline "We're not mad anymore." When I asked the reason for the change, I was told that:
a) many prospective customers were not familiar with Alice in Wonderland
b) some prospective customers were put off by the reference to mental illness

Late sixties in Allentown, PA. I had an evening route for the first year, which really cut into my after-school schedule. Lots of walking because about 15% of the houses took the evening paper in 1965 (TV news was having an impact).
Switched to a morning route the for four years, not as much walking because the morning paper was much more popular, probably about 70% saturation. I loved reading the paper at 6:00 AM while the streets were quiet, especially in spring, summer and fall.
Going door-to-door to collect ~$2.50 per fortnight ($1.92 for the evening paper) was part of the job, too. Once every two weeks, I'd walk downtown to pay for my papers; there were two excellent pinball opportunities along the way ...

|3 weeks 2 days ago||Wait,||
did you mean the Rose Bowl game seemed anti-climactic? I felt that too, though probably not as much as Iowa fans.
You have a reasonable explanation for the ratings decline: parties and people watching as best they could at commercial NYE celebrations.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||Okay,||
I took your usage of anti-climactic to refer to the slate of bowl games on that day, as if the matchup was disappointing and lacking interest. If you meant otherwise, please elucidate.
I do not know everyone in the country; my (admittedly) small group of Michigan fans was in full attendence for Alabama-MSU in the Cotton Bowl. I did read that the ratings figures were down, but this is of little consequence to me; hopefully they'll be way up next year when Harbaugh's team makes its first appearance in the CFP.

A quick check of the UM hockey roster for 2015-2016 shows 6 freshmen, 7 sophs, 9 juniors and 3 seniors. That is not the profile of Kentucky or Duke basketball, and we were talking basketball.

people over 40 can have eyesight, video skills and judgement just as good as people under 40. Mike Pereira was born in 1950, so he's older than both of us. There should be some objective screening of replay officials which involves candidates not currently considered.
I would not qualify, because I could never be completely objective about college football teams.
|29 weeks 4 days ago||The targeting rule has problems,||
and these problems should be addressed.
But there is another problem, the replay officials in the booth need an upgrade, too. Often these replay officials are older refs who can no longer run up and down the field. I not sure they've watched too many games on tv this century, or are comfortable with the technology. Get some neutral observers in their late 20s / early 30s; they don't need to be on the site of the game. Mike Pereira always seems to get the calls correct (meaning I agree with him) when consulting on Fox. It is possible.

We had Bob Ufer on radio; in many ways that was better than a modern telecast with "neutral" announcers. If you had ever seen a game in Michigan Stadium, you could picture the action as Ufer described it: "Two tight ends and a balanced line, Huckelby deep, Davis close, Ricky Leach under center, the ball resting 18 yards in, from this, the western sideline."

|30 weeks 5 days ago||Visiting team effect?||
You can count on a certain number of opponent fans who either live in the area or choose to travel to Ann Arbor. Seattle is a long way to travel for a game, especially when you consider the cost of air travel in 1969. But the next week attendence for Missouri was 64,476, just under 15,000 more than for the Huskies.
It wasn't weather, high temperature at Detroit metro was 69 degrees, no precipitation.
Possibly band day, which was usually the 2nd home game of the season, IIRC. Perhaps the high school band members and their chaperones weren't counted?

|30 weeks 5 days ago||Season Tickets influence||
It would be interesting to see the season ticket sales numbers, and not just attendence. It was the demand for season tickets in the early 70s which ended Band Day; Canham couldn't withold 30,000 seats for high school bandsmen after Bo got things rolling.
Before 1970, I think the size of the stadium itself was a factor, tickets had been plentiful for 20 years. You could wait and see what the weather was like and drive to the stadium if you liked the matchup. Once tickets got tight, fans (no longer just students, faculty and alumni) began to plan ahead and made the committment season tickets. Canham and Schembechler changed the gameday experience, attendance-wise.
And Boones Farm was sooooo terrible, it might have been recycled wine.

When Kirk limped out of the dugout, I said to my wife, "Wow, this is like something out of 'The Natural'", and then life imitated art.
Greatest non-Michigan football sports memory of my life. My kids still talk about the yell I let out. ( Dodger fan back then. )
So sorry to hear about this; best wishes to Mr. Gibson and his family.

I was the ring bearer for the ceremony, but I did not catch a glimpse of Mr. Lim.

the Trail Blazers were the only Major League Pro Franchise in the state, the Timbers had not joined MLS and Phil Knight's purchase of the Oregon Ducks was still in its stealth stage.
The Blazers didn't know how to deal with objective journalism or any kind of criticism, so Patterson's first instinct was to kill the messenger.

I had a great*3 grandfather in the 56th Pennsylvania Volunteers who fought next to the Iron Brigade on the first day then spent the next two days on Culp's Hill. The personal connection is a very powerful reminder of the sacrifices those men and women made, and the ongoing service of those who fight our battles.
As to stops on your tour, I'd recommend:
Vicksburg, fantastic park and recently regroomed for 150th anniversary in '13.
Shiloh, eeriely quiet and misty when I was there.
Lookout Mtn and Chickamauga are excellent as well; Missionary Ridge pretty much taken over by housing.
I need to get to Virginia and Georgia one of the days. Maybe if I win the lottery ...

It was rock, paper, scissors time; the Seahawks decided to go scissors, thinking they'd have two more downs to go ROCK. But rookie Malcolm Brown wasn' t thinking about the incredible catch Kearse made against him two plays earlier, he was thinking about what he'd seen on film when the Seahawks lined up with stacked receivers, and he made the play of the game on the biggest stage.
What a great finish to a great game.
