I don't spend much time in either of those, so I can't say. Add Columbus, and you've got all six Big Ten conference members; perhaps the BTN is fostering interest in each of these.
My perception has been that hockey is a distant third outside of the three college towns I mentioned, but I'll keep an open mind. At many of the schools that play hockey, its the #1 sport: North Dakota, Minn-Duluth, Colorado College, U of Denver, Quinnipiac, Boston U, Union, ...
In no way should my comments be taken to demean college hockey, I enjoy the sport immensely, and appreciate its coverage here at mgoblog.

Michigan was 3-7 at the start of the game against Northwestern; Wolverines had surprisingly won at Minnesota to retain the jug the week before. Brian's text from that game, in the yellow box, mentions 3-7 Michigan playing Northwestern (who was 7-3 at kickoff).

Between 1999, when Buffalo rejoined Div I, and 2006, the team did not win more than three games a year. In the three seasons before 2007, Buffalo's record was 2-9, 1-10, 2-10. Gill's squad won as many games in 2007 as they had in the preceding three seasons.
In 2008, they played in the first bowl game in program history.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||Agree.||
Spack is also a Purdue alum.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||True,||
but he only had three seasons; back then (1977-79) head coaches were usually given their full initial contract, typically four or five years. Prior to Moeller's arrival, Illinois was usually around .500 in won-lost record; they declined to 2-3 wins for the three years he was there.

at the close of his recruitment, Malik's statements to the media expressed the higher level of comfort he ejoyed with players and coaches in EL. Now those upperclassmen and the former Defensive Coordinator have moved on; it may be a different atmosphere there.
I wished he had come to play in Ann Arbor; but he made his choice and (like all of us) needs to live with the result of his choice. He has experienced a Rose Bowl win, and a CFP appearance; I think he'll be fine.

But their east coast regular season schedule was never as tough as the other national title contenders. For fun, check out the Lambert Trophy, given annually to the best FBS team in the East. Penn State has won it an impressive 29 times; the second most frequent winner, with 7 trophies is Army (YTA).
|10 weeks 1 day ago||Well,||
the article says he's made enemies during his time in Ann Arbor, it does not specify where those enemies are.
We know that many of them are in SEC territory and in other Big Ten football programs.
We also know he's made lots of new friends during his time in Ann Arbor, but the article is not about that. It about what a great coach James Franklin is and what a bright future he and Penn State share. I wouldn't want them to say anything different at this point.

Late sixties in Allentown, PA. I had an evening route for the first year, which really cut into my after-school schedule. Lots of walking because about 15% of the houses took the evening paper in 1965 (TV news was having an impact).
Switched to a morning route the for four years, not as much walking because the morning paper was much more popular, probably about 70% saturation. I loved reading the paper at 6:00 AM while the streets were quiet, especially in spring, summer and fall.
Going door-to-door to collect ~$2.50 per fortnight ($1.92 for the evening paper) was part of the job, too. Once every two weeks, I'd walk downtown to pay for my papers; there were two excellent pinball opportunities along the way ...

|30 weeks 2 days ago||Wait,||
did you mean the Rose Bowl game seemed anti-climactic? I felt that too, though probably not as much as Iowa fans.
You have a reasonable explanation for the ratings decline: parties and people watching as best they could at commercial NYE celebrations.
|30 weeks 2 days ago||Okay,||
I took your usage of anti-climactic to refer to the slate of bowl games on that day, as if the matchup was disappointing and lacking interest. If you meant otherwise, please elucidate.
I do not know everyone in the country; my (admittedly) small group of Michigan fans was in full attendence for Alabama-MSU in the Cotton Bowl. I did read that the ratings figures were down, but this is of little consequence to me; hopefully they'll be way up next year when Harbaugh's team makes its first appearance in the CFP.

A quick check of the UM hockey roster for 2015-2016 shows 6 freshmen, 7 sophs, 9 juniors and 3 seniors. That is not the profile of Kentucky or Duke basketball, and we were talking basketball.

at least the portion he expounded during halftime of our game, is that power five teams on the bubble benefit during conference tournaments because they're generally playing teams with high RPIs, while mid-major bubble teams usually see their RPIs decline even while winning in their conference tournaments. Mid-major teams need to build their resumes on the basis of their non-conference schedules.

a troll who waited for an invitation? Generally, they just show up, invited or not.

Personally, I find Indiana University of Pennsylvania odd, but I guess my beef is with those who named Indiana, PA.

because he had such a great week of practice.

A photographer with a huge lens was on the field during timeouts in the first half. I thought he was taking pictures of the various senior day recognitions (dancers, etc), but he was taking individual shots to stitch together to make this panoramic picture.
|1 year 1 week ago||Great writeup.||
I grew up in Pennsylvania, have been to State College a dozen times, but yesterday was the my first gameday experience. My wife and I were wearing maize and blue and _every_ interaction we had with PSU fans was positive. There was grumbling about some PI calls (wtf, every call should go your way?), but fans will be fans. I had several Penn State fans tell me to crush Ohio State next week (of course, I was telling them we'd be rooting for them next week).
Ice Cream from the Creamery on campus is delicious, and we met the Glascow brothers' grandparents there! All in all, a fun trip.
|1 year 1 week ago||Same here.||
I thought OSU -13 was a little high, but I'd have bet the farm on OSU -9.5; and that was when I thought Cook would start albeit banged-up. Saved myself a bundle by not being able to bet.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Hmmmmm,||
looks like you're the fourth person to pick UMich 38-24.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||So,||
you're calling a stop on a two point conversion attempt by Penn State late?

They came close in Ann Arbor; it's great to see them get it done in State College.

Is Hunter Rison a 2017 4* wide receiver?
If so, this "news" has already been posted.

"straight from the horses mouth," eh?
|1 year 4 weeks ago||Okay,||
people over 40 can have eyesight, video skills and judgement just as good as people under 40. Mike Pereira was born in 1950, so he's older than both of us. There should be some objective screening of replay officials which involves candidates not currently considered.
I would not qualify, because I could never be completely objective about college football teams.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||The targeting rule has problems,||
and these problems should be addressed.
But there is another problem, the replay officials in the booth need an upgrade, too. Often these replay officials are older refs who can no longer run up and down the field. I not sure they've watched too many games on tv this century, or are comfortable with the technology. Get some neutral observers in their late 20s / early 30s; they don't need to be on the site of the game. Mike Pereira always seems to get the calls correct (meaning I agree with him) when consulting on Fox. It is possible.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||So,||
I take it you aren't a fan of House of Cards? I found Kevin Spacey's breaking of the fourth wall a major distraction.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||If he's under contract,||
the Lions cannot offer him anything; to do so would constitute tampering, against NFL rules.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||I thought the same thing.||
And what a cool, collected performance on Michigan's final drive.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||Ironic.||
Gophers gain 491 yards in the first 59:41 of the game, then, with the game on the line, can't gain 1/2 yard in the final 19 seconds
|1 year 4 weeks ago||Very emotional environment.||
Jerry Kill built this program and returned it to respectability. Hiss assistants have been with him for more than a decade. Every player on the team committed to Coach Kill; they all played with intensity.
Add the night game atmosphere and you have a perfect opportunity for an upset.

that whole financial news shtick hides their insidious purpose, to troll Michigan fans.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||Well,||
it's great to be able to see every Michigan game in HD, and clearly there's no going back.
We had Bob Ufer on radio; in many ways that was better than a modern telecast with "neutral" announcers. If you had ever seen a game in Michigan Stadium, you could picture the action as Ufer described it: "Two tight ends and a balanced line, Huckelby deep, Davis close, Ricky Leach under center, the ball resting 18 yards in, from this, the western sideline."
