|4 years 25 weeks ago||A few Notes||
I listened on the radio, announcers mentioned that Hunwick was pissed and talking to the ref after the first goal and that it looked like goalie interference on replay. The goal stood.
After the game, some players got into it. Guptill was charged with grabbing the facemask and given a game misconduct. On Miami's side, McKenzie was charged with grabbing the facemask and given a game misconduct. Vogelhuber of Mia was given a game DQ after the game as well for reasons not listed in the box score. Not sure of the difference between a DQ and a misconduct, but I think we will not see any of the three tomorrow night.
Sounds like we came out a bit flat, not creating a lot of offensive opportunities. Refs swallowed their whistles for the most part. Hard to really tell without the video.
Go Blue and win this next one.

Jews and Bacon don't mix? Come on, thats funny. Its sort of a pun because Bacon revealed some unflattering things about this particular jew, and jews are believed to also avoid pork. Guess you got to be a fan of puns. And is "heeb" really derogatory? I had to look it up, but it is apparently short for "hebrew." Would it be derogatory to call some one an Anglo or an Afro? Maybe a little but we can all agree that guy should be called some derogatory things, right?

maize may be highlighter yellow in your mind, but in nature corn comes in many shades of yellow (not to mention reds and purples.) the official shades appear to be more of the "gold" color as opposed to "highlighter", but the official shades vary within the university. For example, the athletic blue is brighter than the business school blue and the health system yellow is more gold than other parts of the university. check out: http://www.logos.umich.edu/print.html

|5 years 4 weeks ago||Racist Sieve||
Flickertails was NDs previous mascot before they changed to the fighting Sioux around 1930. There was immediate objection from some indians and this has continued to be a contentious issue ever since. Although some branches of the sioux have endorsed the name, it certainly seems pretty racist considering the "fighting".
If we end up playing the other ND, we could use the same chant as many of us of Irish heritage would take offense to ND's racist mascot/moniker.
A flickertail is a rodent similar to a prairie dog or a ground squirrel. ND changed their name to the Fighting Sioux when ND State became the Bison. ND's president reasoned that the Sioux were good at exterminating Bison, thus they became the Fighting Sioux. Nevermind that it was white men who exterminated bison while the indians were dependent on the herds.

I was screaming the same thing to my dad when the fourth line came in during the third period saturday. The defensemen weren't pushing up, which is fine I guess with a 2-0 lead, but it was frustrating to see the fourth line come in and take a penalty. Hunwick was awesome and that wraparound rejection with one second on the clock was super.
But brian, I disagree about one thing: This IS the year (knocking on wood). We're playing team hockey, the defense is strong, and it is clear Hunwick plays his best in single elimination. Anyone else pumped about going to minnesota, eh?

Seriously I vow to write into my book a passage about a shitty ref named shegos who sucks at hockey, reffing, and life in general.
He will be the second worst ref, in my book, only to John Gravelese, who, in one instant, imagined a whistle that he shouldn't have been blowing in the first place and therefore, in his mind, negated a goal that Michigan scored in overtime of the playoffs, earning him the title of worst ref ever. He sure shegosed us out of that one.

|5 years 20 weeks ago||Well I guess that's why||
the wave was started way too early. I wanted to focus on the wave, but the score was still 2-0 halfway through the second period. Probly why it didn't do so well. We should have waited until the third period (and the score would have been at least 3-0, a comfortable third period lead.) I noticed a lot of the football players were gone during the third period, at least in section 25 where RR, GERG, and DRob were sitting.
Overall a fun game, nice to dominate FYS. Even the refs added insult to injury and disallowed the only puck that got by Hunwick. The right call if the play is dead when the net comes off its moors. There were some bad calls but not too many penalties overall, and they called about the same number for both sides.
Advertising was annoying, I lost count of how many times the announcer said "The Arby's Big Chill presented by Buick". Hopefully not a trend.
|5 years 21 weeks ago||Are the Yips still on?||
I think it started because there was some opposing player named Yip (UNO?) and whenever he got the puck the yipping commenced. Really threw off his game. Then people started yipping when we cleared on a penalty kill. But now there is icing on the penalty kill, so how has yost handled the Yipping situation?
Hopefully we won't need to break out the FYS chant.

Also, I think Dave Brandon has already decided to retain RR.

people were booing the decision to run out the 30 seconds with three timeouts down 24-0. It may have been the right decision, but I was irritated too. At that point you need a touchdown to keep the game within reach. Unfortunately with our defense, a comeback was all but impossible. This team needs to play lights out the whole game to beat the fuckeyes.
While we're talking coaching decisions, why was V Smith still in the game when Tate came in for that last drive? Hopefully the injuries weren't as bad as it seemed and we can go down to [rapist-murderer] and pull off the upset of the decade. Go Blue.

that penalties dont account for much advantage. I assume you went by penalty yardage, but I wonder if penalties would account for more if one could quantify game-changing penalties vs run of the mill penalties. For example, a holding on first down is less impacting than a holding on third down. A pass interference penalty on first or second down is yardage, but on third or fourth down it is drive extending. Garbage time penalties probably favor the losing team, as some of the studies on referee bias have shown in other sports, and you may have accounted for garbage time. Also blatant no calls can have just as much impact as penalties, so I would suggest the overall effect of refereeing would probably be doubled.
Not suggesting that it would be feasible to account for all that, just some thoughts. Appreciate your work, Mathlete!
|5 years 24 weeks ago||Just watched the replay||

also played college football at West Virginia (1894). He innovated the forward spiral pass and and the hurry up offense. He stressed speed and conditioning to wear down defenses. His 1901 team finished with 555 points to zero allowed. The rose bowl against Stanford was ended ten minutes early at a score of 49-0. IME, RR fits in perfectly with our football tradition.
|5 years 25 weeks ago||I tend to agree||
that negative blogging harms recruiting, though not to a great degree. That being said, Mgoblog has has probably helped the program, particularly the main page stuff. It gives a window of insight into the team and the direction of the program. It shows the dedication of the fanbase and demonstrates some of the history and tradition.
OTOH, the mgoboard could be perceived as sowing dissension. The daily discussions about who will or will not be coaching next year cannot help the image of Michigan in the eyes of recruits. Of course we would not be having such discussions if we were winning more, and winning is ultimately much more important to recruiting.
The mgoboard is not a recruiting tool but a forum for fans. But I would just suggest that we all need to be aware that recruits read some of this stuff and to temper our comments in a way that ultimately helps the team we love.

|5 years 30 weeks ago||High variance||
vs low variance. The stronger team should want to minimize large swings like attempting an onside kick. This strategy would work better to give an inferior team a chance for consecutive possessions and possibly points. I won't try to argue our current status in the big ten. But given that it works better when a surprise, lets save this for tOSU. The other situation to use it would be the Oregon example where there is less to lose if you fail to recover. On the other hand, we should prepare to defend the [incredibly surprising] onside kick, particularly when winning late-ish.
Question: Are we witnessing a shift in coaching philosophy regarding fourth down attempts and onside kicks? Will we?

it was the defense that knocked that mf out for a quater and a half. so yes we can give them some credit. Besides Crist wouldn't have done so hot since he couldn't you know see out of one eye or remember plays. If Crist had played the whole game I can only surmise that we would have won by even more points.
While their backup QBs weren't good, neither was Crist when he came back in; all of them threw to tacopants and our DBs. But thats what happens when you get your brain damaged.
Also, Whose side are you on anyway?
|5 years 32 weeks ago||Going for 2||
My first vivid football memory. I was 10. Gary Moeller's first season as head coach. Michigan State at the Big House. Perhaps could be considered Desmond Howard's breakout game as he had 140 yrds on 8 receptions and a 95 yrd kickoff return. Michigan drives in the final minute and scores in the north end zone with 6 seconds on the clock. Michigan 27 - MSU 28. Moe calls for 2. Grback to Desmond. He dropped it.
On the walk back I was questioning whether Moe should have gone for 2 when the tie was right there. My dad said You don't play to tie, you play to win. Which is right.
If you watch the replay there was very clearly pass interference on Desmond on the final play. It was all the defender could do to dive at Desmond's ankle with the ball in the air, preventing the wide open catch. Injustice!

and last year the Tate punt have been used from around midfield. This keeps the defense guessing, resulting in either an empty backfield or a better chance of converting. Head trauma (check) + change in mental status (dazed look check, memory problems check)
Those doctors are stoopid. If not a concussion, what was their diagnosis? I just wonder what grade of concussion did he have. If symptoms cleared up within 15 minutes and it was his first concussion (which it was not), one could consider putting him back in the game. Symptoms longer that 15 minutes and he should be held out. Also history of prior concussion suggests more conservative approach.
The espn reporter didn't bother to do any actual research, but what do you expect from the leader in entertainment?

Nice work on the picture pages. The exclamations are awesome.
|5 years 33 weeks ago||Yeah, Crist was knocked the||
out. On one replay they were trying to arouse him with smelling salts on the sideline. Head trauma plus altered mental status is a concussion. ("Concussion is a trauma-induced alteration in mental status that may or may not involve loss of consciousness. Confusion and amnesia are the hallmarks of concussion."*) We can debate the severity. We can debate how unhealthy it was for him to go back in. We can debate whether Kelly and/or his team doctor are douchebags. And I suppose you can even argue about the definition of concussion.
Recommendations for concussions vary, but the American Academy of Neurology breaks them into stages. If symptoms last longer than 15 minutes, the player should not return to play, even if he never lost consciousness. At least it was agressive to put him back in and perhaps it was reckless. Props to Crist for wanting to go in, but someone's got to be looking out for these kids health.
*Practice Parameter: The Management of Concussion in Sports. Quality Standards Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology.
|5 years 33 weeks ago||Looked like||
Crist went head first to the ground on his td run. On one replay they waved smelling salts under his nose on the sideline. Sideline reporter said vision changes. Sounds like a concussion and if so, he should not have been put back in, IME. I guess we don't have all the facts, but it seems at least aggressive and perhaps reckless to put him back in.
|5 years 35 weeks ago||If I were Big Ten Commissioner||
I would create divisions that maintained traditional rivalries. Start with M-OSU, and preferably MSU in the same division.
If, being the big ten commissioner, I was for some reason forced to break up traditional rivalries, I would not add protected cross divisional games because this results in uneven scheduling from the start.
If I were AD, I would insist on playing OSU every year and preferably the as the last game, even if it resulted in a more difficult schedule.
If I were me, I would take to a M message board and express the irrationality of splitting M and OSU, perhaps with hyperbole and a mario kart analogy.
If I were you, I would...
eh but I am me, so I'll leave it at that. and go blue.
|5 years 35 weeks ago||Not looking for a shortcut||
to the NC game, I just want the most meaningful M-OSU game every year. If we end up in separate divisions, a protected cross divisional rivalry goes a long way to prevent the conference championship game matchup (at least in those years where we wouldn't play them anyway.)
to your other points, nuh unh.
|5 years 35 weeks ago||Protected cross divisional rivalries||
are mathematically unfair, as has been pointed out by some. I don't know why the conference would support them if their primary consideration is really competitive balance. It is like the equalizing nature of mario kart where stragglers get a lightning and the leader gets a single banana. If the conference goes to this system I would prefer a protected Indiana (triple red shell) instead of OSU (single green shell). Or we could simply create divisions that maintained the best rivalries.

You mean now I actually have to create content in order to vote? The main reason I read the comments is for the fun of voting, which was mostly of the positive variety. Superpowers are now secondary to mgocurrency. More of an oligarchy than a democracy. Before I had superpowers I would usually ignore the comments. The capability of voting made things interactive, which made me feel like part of the mgocommunity, even though I rarely commented.
OTOH, there did seem to be a rash of neg banging lately, often for no good reason. But was posbanging really a problem? What if negs cost a point, but pos were free? Or what if you had a daily allotment of votes in proportion to your point total?
Anyhow, the aesthetic changes look good, though I liked the avatars on the left.

+1 for "hang-dog"
+1 for "hairshirting"
I had to look up these terms. You don't find journalistic gold like that in the msm. Thanks for expanding my vocab, man.

ok ok we probly won't need it barring some terribly unsportsmanlike development but FTB would work well too

Stupid comcast. I had to settle for audio only this weekend, and those announcers were obnoxious. Awesome sweep. Great to see this story come full circle with corey tropp's tratorious foot and Kampfer's retribution. Little brother down; bring on the red headed stepchild of the CCHA (NTM). If we can seal the NCAA bid I like our chances the way we're rolling. Go Blue and Go to the Joe!

Replace with Shegos. They are synonymous anyway.
I'd also like to hear "She Sucks--> She Blows" when Shegos makes a shegos.

I found a wallet in a parking lot last year. I was going to send it to the owner and looked for an address. There was a tOSU student ID card and the leather had a block O burned into it. It ended up in the sewer. Suck it Todd Kendall! (probably not the actual name)
