I agree with everything you say with one exeption, the stipend. All full scholarship athletes recieve a $2000 per month allowance for food (beyond training table) and housing. This is why many athletes stay at school during the summer months to continue training on site but to keep the $2000/month gravy train rolling in. It is very easy for athletes to live comfortably on $2000/month.
$800 dollars a month in food ($200 a week seems a bit much)
that leaves $1200 to find a place to live. I don't know about you but the places I lived in college were around $1200 a month split between 2 or 3 people.
So frugal athletes are reasonably pocketing $500 a month. But I guess when you throw in your $500 car note then yea money is tight.

By the same logic you could say that because in 2011 and 2012 we were undefeated at home an infinite ticket price is justified and not considered overpriced.

They are still getting a free education. What that education is in has to keep the athlete eligible while not conflicting with practice times. Beggars can't be choosers, if they want to go to UM no strings attached they can apply on their own academic merit and be admitted with out athletic consideration. Fact is most athletes wouldn't get admitted this way.
|2 years 42 weeks ago||Here is how you deal with the||
Here is how you deal with the Hand scenario; you tell him he can major in engineering. He comes in freshman year in the engineering program and takes ENG 100, Math 115, Chem 116, and an elective. If he can play football and do well in those classes then perhaps he can stay in engineering. If he does poorly you say to him that in order to stay eligible he should consider switching majors. Nobody wins if an athlete is academically ineligble and on full scholarship.
$220K free out of state tution, room and board, books and fees is not bull shit.

But my 3 anecdotes out number his 1. Thereby making mine a trend. /s
In all seriousness the steering athletes into easy majors is true in some regards because not all athletes at UM are the greatest students but I don't think it is the case every single time. Remember they have to keep these atheletes academically eligible so that they can compete. If a kid gets a 2.5 GPA their freshman year they probably aren't going to be encouraging him/her to major in STEM fields. If a kid gets a 3.5 GPA freshman year I'm sure they let them major in whatever he/she chooses.

2011 and 2012 are just 2 data points out of 7. If gas during the week is priced $9, $9, $9, $9, $2, $2, $9 would you say that it was overpriced during that week?
Here is some Data: Average college football ticket prices, Michigan is 3rd at $230
Since 2007 Michigan is tied with Oregon State and UConn for 48th in total wins. This data doesn't include 2013 but a 7 win season probably doesn't move us up very much.
By that discrepancy 3rd most expensive tickets in the country but only 48th most wins in the country I feel confident saying Michigan football is overpriced.
And for comparison OSU is 2nd at $246, Nebraska is 4th at $210, Iowa is 9th at $166, and PSU is 18th at $133.

Plus, aside from Hand there aren't a large contingent of big time recruits or Football Players who want to be engineers. On the BBall team Jordan Morgan is an engineering major. I didn't mean to jump on you but the idea that college athletes are victimized because they don't get a piece of the TV and apparel money grinds my gears. $220K is a life changing amount of money especially if it is used to further educate oneself at Michigan. So what if the athletic department rips off Denard Robinson by selling thousands of #16 jerseys modeled after his likeness to pay for the 699 other student athletes at the university college tuition is expensive.

Michigan is 39 in Sagarin this year. So ND, Utah, MSU, and OSU are all ahead of us. Minnesota, Penn State, IU, and NW are within striking distance. Hoke's history tells us he is going 2-3 on the road next year (6-8 on the road lifetime, 1-2 at neutral fields). With ND, MSU, and OSU all on the road I'd say 1-4 on the road is more likely than 2-3. Obviously there is a lot of work to do on both sides of the football. No need to talk about them here as we all know them and there are numerous board threads about them. I know that state loses a lot of defensive contributers this year but they seem to discover diamonds in the rough year in and year out. They have a 3* sophmore DE playing at an all conference level while our 4 and 5* players are "still developing". I love Michigan and have since birth but there is no denying that Dantonio has MSU in a great spot. I am curious as to how things go with the new conference alignments but barring a sparty meltdown of JL Smith proportions MSU is poised to get their third 11 win season in four years. The last time Michigan did that was the point a minute teams under Yost. It is very possible that next year as we break in a new young OL for the umpteenth year in a row we play second fiddle to OSU and MSU in the conference again. That being said I hope we win out and get to 10 wins with a victory over OSU. That will make for a good year in my opinion. conf

At this point I expect around 2 catastrophic turnovers every game. Garnder averages 1.5 INTs per start and has fumbled it away probably 0.5 times per start. |2 years 48 weeks ago||As nervous as I am about this||
As nervous as I am about this game I think it comes down to whether our defense can stop the sparty offense. If we can shut them out offensively (purdue almost did) it gives us some leeway on offense as I expect a trick special teams play and probably a defensive touchdown against us. If either team scores 20 points they will win this game. Dantonio loves to play the field position game and Hoke will oblige him much like Ferentz did in the Iowa-MSU game earlier in the year.

In HS we would run the zone and basically the weakside tackle either cuts the weakside end or punches him and releases inside to get the first person he can. the weakside G and C would take the NT(1 tech) and the Will. The Playside Guard and Playside Tackle would take the DT (3 Tech) and the Mike. The FB and TE (lined up playside) would take the defensive end and first run support player usually the strong safety rolled up to the line. In this play the blocking looks similar except for Kerridge plunging forward way too soon. In the blocking I outlined he would take steps towards the TE looking to help with a double team on the end but then bounce to first threat he sees which would be Smallwood in the hole. Could this be a blown assignment by Kerridge or is he coached to attack the line of scrimmage on a zone?

It's tough not to feel for the players who were in elementary school when Sandusky prowled the sidelines and PSU. Certainly John U. Bacon's writing style garners sympathy from the reader for Bill O'Brien and the players. Nevertheless the cultish attitude of the PSU fan base towards Joe Paterno is frightening. It is human nature for large groups of people to fall into the "Cult of the Leader" and this is evidenced by the facist dictators of the 1930's, the communist dictators of the soviet union, and the Kim Il Sung dynasty in the DPRK. I'm not comparing the attrocities of genocide to what happened at PSU but the psychology of a group deifying their leader applies. As Bo said in "Bo's Lasting Lessons", another John U. Bacon masterpiece, a leader knows when to step down. Bo's mantra of THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM is what defines him as more than a great football coach in my mind. I can not believe that Joe Pa would say, "No coach is more important than the team."

|3 years 22 weeks ago||Pretty simple||
Pretty simple explanation.
In canadian football there is no such thing as a touchback. Any time the ball is kicked into the endzone the receiving team has to advance it out past their own goaline or else the kicking team is awarded 1 point. This is commonly done by running the ball out but can also be done by kicking the ball out. This is a rule that is inherited from the rugby origins of football. Also of note, any player may punt the ball at anytime but the kicking team may not touch the ball until the receiving team touches it.
So in this scenario with the game tied the missed field goal goes into the endzone and the receiving team loses the game if they don't advance it out of the endzone so they elect to kick it out. The original kicking team then elects to kick it back into the enzone to try to score the single and win the game. This goes back and forth and makes for some crazy end of game antics.

The kicking game is what connects American football to its historic roots in rugby.
Football is a dangerous game. If they were really worried about player safety they should implement a weight limit. Another good idea would be to enforce rules against leading with your head on both sides of the ball. I'm against removing facemasks but could be easily swayed if it could be proven to lead to more propper tackling form. Too often players just launch themselves like projectiles trying to put as big a hit as possible on the opposing player.

Balanced and no need for permanant crossovers, plus you can rotate the championship game between east coast and chicago every other year to get midwest teams on the east coast and east coast teams in the midwest.

Rule Breaking: Covering up knowledge that your players may be inelligble. Taking six figures from a booster
Honest Oversight: Failing to fill out the right forms. Quality control assistant telling players he is an assistant coach.
If there is any chance that the NCAA determines Webber is violating his no-contact ban by attending a Michigan tournament game then the University should absolutely prohibit it. We have come too far to risk it. Unitl I hear explicit confirmation from the NCAA that they won't penalize Michigan for this I am against it. You can't trust them these days.

I believe if you read 3 And Out by John U. Bacon he address who was at fault in the Athletic Department for failing to keep up to date forms. Still this pales in comparison to taking six figures and showing no contrition when busted.

Or will you be hyper-critical like the rest of our fanbase?
In my mind the university has no reason to invite Webber back. All the wins were vacated and sure once his ban is lifted he can come to the games but why should be honor/celebrate a rule breaker? How do we defend that without admiting our criticism of Pryor, Tressell, and Clarrett was wrong?
|3 years 34 weeks ago||I only need one reason not to||
I only need one reason not to be a Pryor fan, he went to Ohio.
I hear you about how it has been 20 years, really only 10 since the scandal broke. But time makes no difference to me. It's not as if after May 1st they will un-vacate the final fours and the wins. If CWebb seeks out a private meeting with DB and MSC to discuss this very topic I'd gladly accept the results of that meeting.
I'm not trying to pass judgement on CWebb because I don't know what I would have done if I were in his shoes. It is easy to say I wouldn't have accepted the money but I never had to make that choice myself. I am disappointed that he has never shown any contrition for the damage his actions did to the program.

Interesting, the record reflects that they did not win a single game in these seasons. Welcome back your fab five!!!!

I'm not ok with any rule breaking. When two "journalists" go an a witch hunt because they don't like the coach and all they find is 20 minutes of extra stretching I'm not torn up about it.
There is a difference between blatant rule breaking and honest oversight. I'll bet my house that if you looked at every FBS team about 90% of them would be found to be 20 minutes or more over countable hours in season.
Also this is not the point. If Howard, King, Jackson, and Rose want to buy courtside seats they are free to do so. Webber can't and shouldn't be allowed to. They definitely haven't done anything to deserve honors (B1G championships, National Championships). Their only claims to fame, 2 final fours, were vacated.

I know this isn't a popular opinion around these parts but major rule violators have no place at Michigan. How can we hold ourselves to a higher standard if we welcome back the very people whose actions damaged the state of our program. The halmark of Michigan has always been achieving excellence the right way. Sadly the fab five do not fit this definition.
