We certainly are at a low point right now. In the two real games Michigan has played this year, the QBs have combined for a 0 TD : 6 INT ratio. The offense overall has combined for a 0 TD/1 FG : 8 Turnover ratio.

Sparty could have iced the game with the pick six that was called back. What a Sparty, No! moment
|3 years 38 weeks ago||I think the refs were right on both calls||
Unfortunately, I think the refs ended up with both of the calls correct.
On the Roundtree play, the ball definitely seems to hit the ground and shift a pretty decent amount. I think that's clearer of an incompletion than the Virginia Tech play last year (which I think the refs ended up being right on there too).
On the Smith interception, I think however it was called on the field would stand. The way I'm thinking it worked (without the ball hitting the ground) was that basically the ball got squished between his hands and chest and then sprung out of there.
On a brighter note, on the "maybe don't block Roh with a RB next time"... they may as well have not blocked him on that play. Holy shit that's impressive.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Ditto||
I have seen numerous places report that.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Triple Option||
For all that we're always saying "Michigan won't have to face another triple option team like Air Force this year"... wouldn't you go heavily triple option against Michigan if you're Nebraska? I mean, if I was their offensive coordinator, I'd look at Michigan's performance against Air Force and say "we have better players than Air Force. Imagine what we can do" and focus heavily on that.
Am I just missing something?
|3 years 40 weeks ago||NCAA Rules||
Only thing I could see in NCAA rules that was related to this was:
Rule 9-2, Article 1, subsection a-2-b-5 (I have no idea if that's how it actually would be designated, but that's what it looks like to me)
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards from the succeeding spot [S7 and S27].
5. Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise
And rule 1-1-6 specifies who is subject to the rules:

The Jake Ryan, Kovacs, and Hoke all seemed to brush off the defense's performance as being very largely an artifact of facing Air Force. I was surprised by that.

They only had one other win over a BCS autoqualifier, and that was Alabama in 2007, when Bama went 7-6.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Pretty sure they were illegal||
I was one of the people yelling about it throughout the game. I know on at least 2 of the TDs, one of our players who would have had a shot at being in position to stop the TD, they were cut below the waist and it definitely didn't look straight on.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Illegal downfield cutblocks||
As I kept spamming on twitter and posting about in the liveblog -- Air Force looked like they were illegally blocking our downfield defenders on most all plays -- as of this year, receivers are no longer allowed to block below the waist, and Air Force did that extensively.

Brian, you're misunderstanding what happened here. We didn't play and lose a game against a college football team. Dave Brandon decided we should forfeit our first game so we would get a chance to play a preseason NFL game. Who we put up 14 points on.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||NFL Team||
Looking at that Bama team, most of them will probably be first or second round NFL draft picks. We were practically playing a bad NFL team. Although this was an ugly, ugly loss, where practically everything that went wrong could... there were still lots of positives that make me optimistic about the team.

|4 years 32 weeks ago||This.||
Stiffarmtrophy.com has accurately predicted the last 9 Heisman winners and they are hugely reliable. RG3 is going to win, and he will likely win by a margin that puts him in the top 15 of Heisman winners as far as max point percentage goes. #2 is Luck with about 50%. #3 is Richardson, #4 is Ball, #5 is Mathieu.
|4 years 33 weeks ago||I think...||
I love Chuck Klosterman, but I think he's wrong here. Everyone I know who hates Tebow, me included, doesn't so much actually hate Tebow as hate the media lovefest with Tebow. But I hate the media coverage of him.
"If you're fortunate enough to spend five minutes or 20 minutes around Tim Tebow, your life is better for it."
|4 years 33 weeks ago||Minor correction||
Technically EMU isn't bowl eligible, since they are 6-6, but played two FCS teams and can only count one of those wins towards bowl elgibility.
|4 years 33 weeks ago||Oooh||
Michigan/Stanford is also a possibility, according to this.
lsu, oklahoma, va tech, southern miss, boise state, oregon, wisky, usf, uconn, unlv, iowa state, texas all winning gives us that matchup.
If you do the same, but flip usf with wvu and uconn with cincy, it has Michigan vs WVU
|4 years 33 weeks ago||Also||
UM/Kansas State is another possibility.
Also, if Georgia beats LSU, the only way I saw Michigan getting in is both TCU and Houston losing.
|4 years 33 weeks ago||Things I'd like to see tested/investigated||
Coaches always talk about RBs "getting stronger as the game goes on" when you have one back getting the bulk of the carries. Is there anything at all to this? Is it just the defense tiring (so would any other back that comes in have equally improved stats)?
Is there anything to having a quarterback in a rhythm/taking him out of rhythm?
Are 4th down plays in critical game situations more or less likely to be successfully converted than equivalent down and distances in non-critical situations?
|4 years 34 weeks ago||More ref notes||
RVB was blatantly held on almost every single play and it was only called once IIRC, and that was for the safety. I believe on the long TD pass on the crossing route to Posey there was a pretty bad missed holding call too.
Also, you're not the only one who thinks that the TD shouldn't have been overturned. Mike Pereira, former NFL head of officiating, also said that it shouldn't have been overturned (https://twitter.com/#!/MikePereira/status/140525853518991360).
Regarding the penalty on Watson following the overturn, that was majorly iffy. They called it as an "after the play was over," but Watson hits the Ohio player at almost the exact instant that the whistle is blown, and it's roughly half a second after Denard makes it into the endzone. Calling that after the play is over is a terrible call. Even if it was unnecessary roughness, we only should have had 15 yards of penalties, not 25 -- it should never have been called in addition to the holding.

|4 years 40 weeks ago||Agreed.||
Agree 100%. I'm not even that upset that we lost anymore. State has an impressive defense and outplayed us. The only thing I'm upset about still is the dirty play by MSU, but that's to be kept in another thread.
I'm glad we get a bye week to heal up some and hopefully basically another bye week against Purdue before our next big test in Kinnick Stadium. Go blue, always!
|4 years 40 weeks ago||Classless players trained by a classless coach||
I mean, just look at the quote from MSU's defensive coordinator after the game.
|4 years 40 weeks ago||No.||
If you're implying that Michigan should have cheap shotted MSU back, then you're wrong. That's sinking to their level, and we're better than that. THIS IS MICHIGAN FER GODSAKES. We should encourage our players to play clean, even in the face of opponents playing dirty. Haven't you ever heard "two wrongs don't make a right"?
|4 years 40 weeks ago||Not TWIS material||
This isn't what TWIS is. Trying to make sure that league rules are enforced by punishing cheap shots is NOT something that makes it onto TWIS. There are some TWIS-worthy comments in other threads, but not this one. The day Brian starts considering people caring about player's safety as TWIS worthy is the day that I stop reading TWIS.
|4 years 40 weeks ago||You're missing the point.||
The whining isn't about the fact that we lost. We all realize that MSU outplayed us and has a good defense. What we are pointing out is the refs and Dantonio not caring about player's safety or good sportsmanship. MSU's players need to learn to not cheap shot other players. They need to learn not to intentionally try to injure other players.
|4 years 40 weeks ago||No.||
Cheap shotting a player is NEVER gritty and ALWAYS dirty. Period. There are no two ways about it. If Michigan won by doing this, I would hope like hell that Hoke suspended any of the players involved. But Michigan didn't. State did. I'd rather have a team with morals that loses than a team without them that wins. Maybe State should move to the SEC, where "win at all costs" is a more appreciated mentality.
If you can look at that and call it anything other than "dirty play," then maybe you should switch over to being an MSU fan. That sort of activity has NO PLACE on a football field and is nothing that anyone should EVER do.

HOWEVER: If you are going to email him, be sure you are polite and not accusative. You are representing Michigan fans, so be sure to do so in a good and polite way. I would recommend waiting at least until tomorrow to write the email to them.
That said, if you want to highlight the plays by Gholston:

No matter how classless Dantonio and his players are, don't wish harm on them. That lowers you to their level.

|4 years 43 weeks ago||"could beat several Big Ten teams" doesn't mean much||
This year, "could beat several Big Ten teams" really doesn't mean much with how horrid the Big 10 is this year (especially at the bottom). Tons of teams could beat Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, probably Penn State, possibly Iowa, probably a Persa-less Northwestern, apparently almost Illinois, which (mixed with OSU's performance against Toledo) means possibly even OSU on a lucky day.
|4 years 43 weeks ago||Calculating bend-but-not-break||
Best way to calculate the bend-but-not-break-ness of the defense that I can come up with would be:
#1) Figure out the expected point value for the opposing team for each of their drives based on their starting position.
#2) Figure out the expected number of yards to be given up on each drive based on starting position.
See where Michigan ranks compared to the expected values for #1 and #2. The larger the difference between Michigan's rank at #1 and #2, the more of a bend-but-not-break defense it is (that is, give up plenty of yards but not points).
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Re: #1||
If #1 is an issue, could he skip hosting it on a different site and simply mark them as hidden or whatever it is where you can only see it if you get a link to it, so it strongly implies that you would get to it via the UFR? Or if not, would simply copy/pasting the text from that line of the UFR into the description possibly be sufficient?

|5 years 15 weeks ago||The intent clause||
Is one of the dumbest rules in the game. As if the refs don't have enough power otherwise? Regardless of if any refs ARE corrupt, imagine if a corrupt ref decided to use the intent clause to prevent a goal intentionally...
We will never know how the game would have played out if the goal counted as it should have. And that is entirely the fault of the refs.
|5 years 15 weeks ago||We played like crap, sure||
But we still should have won even though we played like crap. We scored 3 goals in regulation. UMD scored two. And yet, at the end of regulation the score read 2-2. Clearly the refs had a play in that and clearly they can be blamed for it.

So it depends on what you place more importance on... if you and him don't mind him ending up with some debt at the end and don't mind the travel time, then by all means go with Michigan. If you and him want him to stay out of debt or want him closer to home, then definitely go with UNC.
If he is deathly afraid of the cold and wants to get far, far away from you and you don't mind incurring a bunch of debt, then I guess go with USC. But LA sucks, so I would say don't do that.

|5 years 16 weeks ago||Agreed x1000||
I would pay good money for it, too.
|5 years 17 weeks ago||Yup.||
"The Yellow and Blue" is Michigan's alma mater.
|5 years 17 weeks ago||Clearly the recruit.||
How else can you guarantee that you will get the player with the best name remaining?
But seriously, probably the Duke game.
|5 years 28 weeks ago||I hope it's not this||
Because it means that Dave Brandon WILL screw the pooch. He may get Nebraska, but then he also will do the equivalent of Legends/Leaders and B1G.
|5 years 29 weeks ago||From that URL...||
LOL I read the URL and saw Miss State wastes 106 million on Dan Mullen and was blown away. Then I clicked the link.
|5 years 30 weeks ago||It's what Faux John Madden tweeted||
|5 years 30 weeks ago||Mine||
|5 years 30 weeks ago||Looking like it cost them the game.||
Wow. Good job refs. Cost Southern Miss the game with an obviously bad call. Also cost me one of my picks in my bowl pick'em. Thanks a lot.
|5 years 30 weeks ago||Wow||
That was a horrible call. Ball was clearly out before the Louisville player was down, clearly and conclusively a fumble. Southern Miss was just robbed of at least 3 points, maybe more.
|5 years 30 weeks ago||Ridiculous||
That catch was awesome.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||LOL at difference in headlines:||
Freep headline (I'm not going to link it, you can find it if you really want to): Michigan doesn't expect to sell many more Gator Bowl tickets
Rivals headline (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=rivals-1168100): U-M should be well represented at Gator Bowl
|5 years 31 weeks ago||Wow. Just wow.||
We just held the 19th ranked team in points per game (averaging 80.5) to 29.5 below their average, and 12 below their previous season low.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||Quote||
"Keith Benson is going to wake up in a cold sweat tonight, and all he's going to see in maize."
|5 years 31 weeks ago||What was the turnover on Darius Morris there?||
How did Oakland get the ball on that? It looked like Morris bounded the ball off an OU player's shoe.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||I've been trying to find a picture of it||
Since I saw it I've been googling for a good picture. All I can find is:
|5 years 31 weeks ago||Darius Morris was mugged||
on that last possesion and no foul call. Then a bad foul call against Morgan in which the announcers said something like "look at Ted Valentine getting into the act with that energetic foul call." What a joke Valentine is.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||That wouldn't work||
Knowing Alabama, they would just sign twice as many recruits the next season to make up for it.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||Congrats!||
I'm graduating on Sunday with a masters degree, so as I leave, you can take my spot :)
I wish I could be here longer though.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||GSI!||
I had one of those guys as my GSI for a design course. Awesome.
|5 years 32 weeks ago||To prevent bias||
Division 1 and Division A. Everyone is a winner!
|5 years 32 weeks ago||I'm definitely getting a kick out of these announcers||
"Foster has been Australian for nothing this game"
|5 years 32 weeks ago||I hope||
I really hope that clip ends up on youtube. I want to listen to that again.
|5 years 32 weeks ago||Darius Morris = Mario||
That was the greatest comparison I've ever heard. It was something like:
"you remember the game Mario where you start out small, then you get the mushroom and get bigger, then you get the star and you run wild over the turtles and everything? That's Darius Morris right now"
|5 years 32 weeks ago||I go with wunderground.||
I mean, it was founded by a Michigan PhD student/prof and IS headquartered in Ann Arbor.
|5 years 32 weeks ago||Mullen may not leave||
So we'll see.
|5 years 33 weeks ago||BCS teams||
So we played 3 BCS teams, beat one of them, and faced an 11-1 team that didn't make the BCS. I think the only other team that faced that many upper level teams was Oregon State (Stanford, Oregon, TCU, and Boise State), and they ended 5-7.
|5 years 33 weeks ago||Maybe.||
I'm very seriously considering it, but I haven't decided yet.
|5 years 33 weeks ago||What||
Why does the Academic All Big Ten thing say he's a sociology major but his mgoblue profile says he's in the college of engineering?
EDIT: NVM some mgocreeper umich directory stalking says he's in LSA as a sociology major.
|5 years 33 weeks ago||Not a dilemma at all||
As a Bears fan, I suggest that you take this opportunity to root for the Bears. :)
|5 years 33 weeks ago||Not many.||
4 more than we have right now. The opening round, quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship game of the Big Ten Tourney. :)
|5 years 34 weeks ago||Yes, A Rod||
One Rod. Take your pick. Should one Rodriguez of your choice be punished for steroids?
|5 years 34 weeks ago||Wait....||
What exactly did the SC player do? I wasn't paying total attention so it looked like he just pulled up and hit Meram. And then only got a yellow for it? What? Did I miss something?
|5 years 34 weeks ago||iirc||
|5 years 34 weeks ago||Yup||
It just started streaming HDNet.
|5 years 34 weeks ago||Sites to keep an eye on||
Not currently listed on any of them though.
|5 years 34 weeks ago||Gmail filters||
He'll just filter anything with the subject line "Fire Rich Rod" or similar into one inbox and have someone else read them. He's a smart guy, I trust him to make a smart decision.
|5 years 34 weeks ago||This. This this this this.||
I have a couple of friends who have had bad experiences in Columbus. One was in Columbus and had a car with a Michigan bumpersticker on it, and his tires were slashed. And that wasn't even during football season. So watch out, seriously.
|5 years 35 weeks ago||Only ones I don't see as possible||
Purdue over MSU and Minnesota over Iowa. I really doubt either of those could happen, barring incredible acts of god.
|5 years 36 weeks ago||Awesome.||
That got me wondering what the worst TOM that any team with a winning record has had (in the past 10 years).
|5 years 36 weeks ago||To be fair...||
McGloin did very well in the first half against OSU. I think they said that he threw the first (and second) touchdown passes that Penn State has scored in Columbus during Joe Pa's time there. I believe they also said that, prior to McGloin scoring 2 TDs, a Joe Pa coached Penn State had never scored 2 TDs in Columbus.
|5 years 36 weeks ago||Recievers haven't helped him||
Every game I've watched, the receivers have been straight up dropping balls that would be classified as a "3" on the UFR receiverchart. That said, I like Pennington when he can stay healthy and Chad has, unfortunately, made a number of mistakes too.
It's hard not to like Pennington though:
|5 years 37 weeks ago||Also the Barwis effect||
Due to the Barwis effect, our defense vs the Illini offense will probably win out more than the Illini defense vs our offense as time goes on.
|5 years 37 weeks ago||Hope he gets better soon.||
I hate seeing any player miss time with an injury.
|5 years 37 weeks ago||I'm not saying the defense played amazing||
I'm just saying that if you just look and see 65 points, it looks much worse than it actually was.
And 45 points were accounted for in my stats, since they went for two after one of their drives.
Including OT would make no sense since there isn't any punting and you have really good starting field position.
|5 years 37 weeks ago||It's the yellow bird.||
The yellow bird is not like the bird seed in bowls.
|5 years 38 weeks ago||My picks||
Michigan -82.5 yards
Sooner than the end of the first quarter for Royster
Over 50.5 yards
Redd -15.5 yards
|5 years 39 weeks ago||ND-Navy||
Don't forget Navy running all over Notre Dame. That'll be awesome in TWIS too.
|5 years 39 weeks ago||This.||
Other than my undying love for Michigan, I think Michigan is a great choice (especially if we are assuming I came from the same high school, because it adds close to home).
Great football tradition
The Big House
Has sent a ton of players to the NFL
Great potential over the coming years
Get to play with the awesome people on Michigan's roster
I know you said to ignore it, but I can't make a different choice :)
|5 years 39 weeks ago||Wow.||
This diary was legitimately amazing. Kudos.
|5 years 39 weeks ago||Stiff Arm Trophy updates tomorrow||
http://www.stiffarmtrophy.com/ is the best place to keep track of who is in consideration, as they know what a bunch of actual heisman voters are saying. It should update tomorrow or Friday probably with their new poll since the Iowa game.
|5 years 40 weeks ago||391||
|5 years 40 weeks ago||37-25 M||
Michigan 37 - Iowa 25
|5 years 41 weeks ago||4-1-6?||
Would we be considered as running a 4-1-6 here?
Also, I wonder why Kovacs was used as a deep safety with Floyd up closer instead of the other way around. I assume Floyd is faster than Kovacs, so I would think you would want your faster DB in a deeper zone here so you can cover any guys going vertical. Maybe not though.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||That sucks.||
I wish him the best, hopefully he gets well soon.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||nitpick||
Good job, but I just want to note that you have "Conversion %" listed as your chart title, but you don't actually have percentage below it. Multiply by 100 for the percentage.
Sorry, it was bugging me.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||WOW bad spot||
I liked how as the ref was running in from the sideline to make the spot and he clearly moved further downfield instead of running parallel to the lines.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||O/U||
Ted Bolser, total receiving yards: O/U 49.5
Ben Chappell Total TD Passes: O/U 2.5
Mike Cox O/U rushing yards: O/U 60 yards
Darius Willis + Michigan's leading tailback rusher, total rushing yards: O/U 160 yards.
Roy Roundree, total receiving yards: O/U 85.5
|5 years 42 weeks ago||51-21||
Michigan wins 51-21.
|5 years 42 weeks ago||That gave me an idea very similar to yours||
EDIT: or Charles Woofson
|5 years 42 weeks ago||Or instead...||
Instead you could actually make it Iris Macadogdog
|5 years 42 weeks ago||Girl dog||
|5 years 43 weeks ago||Don't worry about Dantonio||
After they lose to Wisconsin and then to us, they'll go through their Sparty collapse and no one will be voting for Dantonio.
|5 years 43 weeks ago||I heard some too.||
I was in section 30 row 36ish today and there was a kid 2 spots down from me that started booing when Tate came in. My favorite part was when he started yelling about how he hoped Tate threw an interception. Really? Even if you hate Tate, you put your hatred of him over your Michigan fandom?
So my friends and I just started cheering loudly any time Tate would do something well (in otherwords, often). We'd also start saying things loudly like "WOW, what a nice play by Tate" and stuff like that. I told my friend that I figured that Tate must have stolen the guy's girlfriend, because otherwise why would you hate him like that? Really?
He left the game really early, I think.
|5 years 43 weeks ago||Betting.||
I was cheering for that, but that was because I picked Toledo to cover the spread against Purdue. That said, I wanted Purdue to come back and win, but by less than 11. Like what Penn State did.
|5 years 43 weeks ago||The best QB stable in the country.||
I agree. Let's pause a moment and think about that. If someone had told us in 2008 that in 2010 we would have the best group of QBs in the country and that our starting QB and two backups all can run our offense quite well, I think all of us would have called them crazy.
|5 years 43 weeks ago||53-13||
Michigan wins 53-13.
Bowling Green's 13 comes from 2TDs on long passes where a safety went for a pick and missed it. Bowling Green misses one of their PATs.
Michigan scored 7 TDs. Kicked the PAT once and went for the 2pt conversion every other time and was successful 5 of the 6 times.
At least, that's how it played out when I played the video game a few minutes ago.

These are some (larger, but still tiny) U of M logos. While the one linked in the original post is a display, these are not, but rather carbon nanotube structures.
