A few years ago SU had a recruit that found out he had an irregular heartbeat and would never play football again and honored his scholarship.

Casey Martin's case is about whether not having to walk the course was a disadvantage endurance-wise with walking the course versus having a cart.

This is about someone having a device that may allow them to run faster, expend less energy in an event which is directly about endurance rather than golf which is more directly putting a small white ball into a tiny hole.

A good comparison would be if Casey Anthony had a bionic arm that let him crush drives over 400 yards.  Yeah, he'd have lots of problems with his short irons, but it's still an advantage that other golfers don't have.

I was there as well - spent the day on the rope behind #8 and watched the field go through before going over to 18 and sitting on the hill for the rest of the day.

The guy in the tiger costume looked more like a cheshire cat than a tiger.

The marshals around 18 were standing there watching the ceremony in front of the ropes - it would have been pretty easy to just go under a rope and run up to the green, which was maybe 30 feet to the podium?

The guy did give himself up once he got to the opposite bunker.  The police weren't exactly gentle with him.  He wasn't cooperating in his drunken state, so they dragged him backwards up the large staircase that went from the hole up to the top of the hill.

This is the 4th US Open I've done and this was a pretty tame crowd.

There was an analysis donre a few months ago after the ACC raid that showed that Syracuse and Pitt were worth more to the conference than the rest of the schools combined.

Temple is going to be back at its rightful place in the Big East crapper.

Big East football, so bad it even had to ask Temple to come back.

The team is supposed to be much better next year.  After 8-5 and winning a bowl in 2010, and starting 5-2 last year with an absolute beating of West Virginia, they lost their last five.

I'm cautiously optimistic.  We'll have a senior QB, we were ravaged by injuries at the end of last year, we get our #1 receiver back, and we return most of the team, so we'll see.

Winning the N'western and Minnesota games are a must-have - that'd be 3-2 in non-conference if you assume losing to USC and @ Mizzou, so just 3-4 in-conference would do it.

Beating UConn, Temple, and Rutgers is key, no excuse for losing those games.  Too many games were absolutely given away last year.

I remember the last time on this board for OT hockey in the tournament... that didn't end well.

I would like for it to end better this time.

For your Syracuse perspective, we'd like to:

We now have two open dates on the schedule due to TCU and WVU leaving (we had three but filled one with Stony Brook).

These openings are during October and November which doesn't coincide with open dates for most D-1 schools that still have a date open.

So yeah, we may have to play Rutgers again (which may be moved to Yankee Stadium (we already play USC at the Meadowlands, which would give us only five home games with still another slot to fill). Or we may have to play two FCS teams, so that would mean those games dount count toward bowl-eligibility.

The ACC has two schedules drawn up, one with SU and Pitt, one without.  They're waiting for the smoke to clear.  If we go to the ACC now, our scheduling problems are immediately gone.

Let's GTFO.

The word is that the ACC has two schedules, one with SU and Pitt included, one without.  WVU and the Big East have a Thursday deadline for mediation so this is why nothing has been released one way or another.  What we've heard is that the deal will be $24 million for WVU to get out this year.

The problem with those open dates is that most are in our already-scheduled non-conference dates.  So matching up with open dates we have, you have very few possibilites.  And you'd have seven Bg East teams looking to fill two games each.  So there's 14 open dates to fill and already scheduled non-conference games where the openings for the other schools are in the same non-conference dates.

Unfortunately, the open dates that the Big East teams would need to fill would be in October and November rather than those schools' open dates which are mostly in September.

Thank God we're getting out of that shitshow.

Talk now is that if WVU tells the Big East to go to hell (they're going to be on the Big XII schedules), that Pitt and then Syracuse will do the same.

Our issue is that with TCU and WVU expected to be on our schedules that we now have two open dates.  We already have 3 BCS conference teams including USC in our non-conference schedule and a 1-AA.  There's just not enough available teams to go around, and adding another 1-AA is a non-starter since it wouldn't count toward bowl-eligibility.

But if we go to the ACC tomorrow, 8 game conference schedule and everything is right.

The Big East would be left with 5 teams.  They can go play a home-and-home schedule for eight games and be full too.

I just want out of that shitshow.

If Michigan was Auburn-style cheating, and got caught/let off the hook as they are, I bet most here would still be fine with it as long as there was national titles coming in every year.

Everyone wants to take a moral high-ground, but there is pushing the envelope already going on, if you think not you're incredibly naive.  I would push the envelope a little further without going SEC-style, but if I was a school like Syracuse, I'd be totally for it (which is where the genesis of the debate came from).

Tonight, in the wake of troubling new allegations that emerged in the media today, I am writing to let you know that Bernie Fine’s employment at the University has been terminated effective immediately.



Frankly, the events of the past week have shaken us all. The taped phone call that ESPN revealed today was not provided to the university by Mr. Davis during the 2005 investigation by our legal counsel. Like the media review of the case a few years earlier, no other witnesses came forward during the university investigation, and those who felt they knew Bernie best could not imagine what has unfolded.



Since I last wrote to you, we have been cooperating fully with the authorities. On Friday, November 18th, as the District Attorney has noted, we turned over to his office the results of our 2005 months-long investigation. Also on November 18, our Board of Trustees retained an independent law firm, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, to review our procedures in responding to the initial allegations when they first came to the University’s attention. I fully supported that decision and it is vital that we examine our protocols and actions in dealing with such serious allegations. We need to learn all we can from this terrible lesson.



All of us have the responsibility, individually and collectively, to ensure that Syracuse University remains a safe place for every campus community member and everyone with whom we interact on a daily basis on campus or in the community as part of our learning, scholarship, or work. As the resident Syracuse guy, I've been waiting on chiming in on this as to not give a kneejerk reaction.

The more I read about it, the more I don't buy it.  If any of it is true, Bernie Fine would need to be gone yesterday, but knowing Syracuse, they don't put up with shit like this.  SU is definitely not Penn State, and I'm glad our Chancellor continues to show that.

The letter above was in my inbox before I even woke up this morning.

From my understanding, the accuser contacted ESPN in 2003 during our National Championship year to allege that Bernie Fine molested him over the course of 12 years from when he was 15 until he was 27.  ESPN Outside the Lines investigated but could not corroborate any of his claims and decided not to run the story.

In 2005, the accuser contacted the Syracuse Post-Standard, Syracuse University, and Syracuse Police.  All three did investigations and could not corroborate any of his allegations, including a four-month investigation by SU.

Now in 2011, the accuser went again to ESPN with a second accuser who happens to be his step-brother.

So it appears that through 2005, there were four investigations conducted - Syracuse Police, Syracuse University, Syracuse Post-Standard, and ESPN to which none could corroborate any of his allegations.  Mark Schwarz from ESPN is now running this story after the accuser's stepbrother comes forward.  The mother of the accuser stated that he only travelled with the team on bus trips since he was afraid to fly (the accuser states he was molested at the 1987 Final Four which was in New Orleans).

I just found out about all of this last night so I don't know more than what I do above, and knowing the way that Syracuse University and SU's Judicial Affairs operate.  If any of the accusations are true, I trust that SU will bring the hammer down on anyone culpable, but this all seems really fishy to me.

We need a petition for a true Michigan legend, Scott Dreisbach.
