Bando's absolutely correct. While a student in 1990 and later, several people told me the basketball players on Frieder's teams were "hooked up" with cars. It wasn't much of a secret on campus.
|6 weeks 23 hours ago||Bo was right.||
The shady stuff probably didn't start when Steve Fisher became coach. Nothing was proven, but as a student at the time, I heard quite a few people talking about possible improper benefits for players. This was before the Fab Five came to campus.
To contrast, I never heard anything like that about the football program or any other athletic program at Michigan (aside from the baseball program selling scandal).

|8 weeks 1 day ago||For long-term investing,||
For long-term investing, index funds are the bomb-diggity. That's where I keep 99% of my retirement savings. Look for low fees from places like Fidelity or Vanguard.
For savings, there's nothing wrong with "higher interest" savings accounts via Ally Bank, Barclays or others. Best rates right now are only 1% which suck, but you have easy access to your money. Interest rates at most brick and mortar banks are terrible. I wouldn't bother with them at all.
You can get a slightly higher return on CDs than on traditional savings, but your money's locked in them for six months, a year or longer.
As Bluebyyou says, be skeptical of specific advice because most brokers are using you to make their living. They're more interested in helping themselves make money than in helping you make money. And, of course, a lot of stock advice is just people trying to boost the price what they already own.

The disc-jockey/piped in music at Michigan football games is horrible. It needs to either go away or be significantly minimized. It's generic and does nothing to improve the "event experience". Spending thousands of dollars of student organization money and enlisting celebrities won't make it better.

I'd like to see the NLI revised so it isn't so unfair to recruits. Schools need a way to plan for incoming recruits and the recruits need some guarantees from schools.
Just thinking about it makes me realize how bad the current recruiting/scholarship system is. The NCAA needs to trash it all and start over. Get rid of oversigning, mandate four-year scholarships (with exceptions for criminal behavior, academic failures, etc) and, basically, give student athletes more control over their lives.

At least, that's how I would do this kind of search.

Saban's a good coach, but Alabama's over-recruiting practices are shady. Yes, other SEC programs do it too, but it's still shady.
In other situations, when a program suddenly gets very, very, very good (looking at you, Oregon) or suddenly gets amazing recruiting classes (looking at you, Ole Miss) after decades of sucking or mediocrity, there *might* be something fishy going on. Certainly, it's not always the case, but I think it's silly to ignore the possibility.
The bottom line is that claims of wrongdoing in no way prove that coaches and schools aren't doing anything wrong.

Now, if I'd failed that exam, it might be a different story. Hehe.

Yes. Sounds like we were at Michigan around the same time. My friend was there from around 1986-1992. I was there from 1990-1993.
I didn't hear about Oksenberg's death until a few years ago when I got the urge to google some of my old college professors. Very sad.
Oksenberg was my professor for PolSci 140. I still remember the final exam: Just one question: "What was the theme of this class?" or something similar. Tough one to answer since we studied a series of countries as individual cases. Never discussed a theme. After writing my answer, I went on to explain why I disagreed with what I found to be the underlying theme. It was a bit bold, so I was surprised that I still got an "A". That exam is part of how Michigan taught me to think for myself.
In hindsight, the theme was probably correct, but it's debatable.

EDSBS is right. Traffic in Atlanta sucks on a good day and most people here have no idea how to drive in a little snow.
Still, city and state officials should take a lot of blame for this. They should have coordinated school transport, encouraged businesses to wait to send home workers and released government workers after private sector folks had time to get out of the city. They should have had their newly-purchased salt trucks out ahead of the snow to get a little salt down in advance.
Personally, as a Michigan born and bred driver (who took drivers education in a Michigan January, ferchristsake), I had a hard time understanding the traffic jams. I drove my two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, sports car home yesterday on side streets that were a little wet and slushy, but not too bad. The main roads were gridlocked and barely moving. My 20 minute drive took two hours, but at least I got home. I really feel bad for people who spent the night on the interstates.
The worst part is that this will all happen again the next time Atlanta gets snow.

The rough thing about his departure from Michigan was the timing. He announced he was going pro after National Signing Day, leaving Michigan in a bad spot. The university did the same thing to me 20 years ago. I served six years in the Army and enrolled at UM after returning from Germany. When I got my first tuition bill I was shocked to learn that UM had accepted me as an out-of-state student. Luckily, I was able to get a state representative to contact the university president. My situation was fixed quickly and the president sent me a letter of apology.
I knew a handful of other veterans on the Ann Arbor campus at the time who did not have this problem. But if accepting veterans who served overseas as out-of-state students is UM policy now, it needs to change. Interestingly, the report from WDIV did not have a response from the university.

|2 years 13 weeks ago||Looking at that gif||
I was just telling my wife the very same thing. I really wanted Harbaugh to come to Michigan, but seeing what a jerk he is, I'm glad he took the NFL job instead. He's a good coach, but he would have been an embarrassment to Michigan.
I'm very happy with Brady Hoke. I cannot imagine him pulling a stunt like this on the Michigan sideline.

As Justingoblue says, fake whistles are dangerous. Blowing a whistle in the stands is not just unsportsmanlike, it can lead to serious injuries on the field. When players think the play is over, they relax their guard and are vulnerable to players who might hit them full force.
Anyone blowing a whistle in the stands during a game deserves to be called out and be pointed out to the stadium ushers so they can be removed.

Agreed. We should replace ND with quality opponents. Playing home-and-home series with SEC and PAC12 teams would be great.

True, but Michigan taught ND how to play football. Michigan went to South Bend and spanked the Irish in ND's very first game.
I don't have anything against the service acadamies, but they're basically cupcakes 90% of the time.

ND is putting the brakes on one of college football's great rivalries.
EDIT: But now they'll have more room for games against Navy and their ACC pals.

There's this one Georgia Tech guy some folks might have heard of. His name's Calvin Johnson. I hear he's a pretty good reciever.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||They're putting Adidas||
They're putting Adidas stripes on the Nebraska uniform just like they did to Michigan's uniform last year.
I never bought into the "legacy jersey" line. It was simply an excuse to add stripes because the Adidas logo is stripes. It's no different than when Nike put a giant swoosh on the Denver Broncos' pants a few years ago. I guess the corporations consider it subliminal advertising.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Michigan lost to FSU by 20||
Michigan lost to FSU by 20 that year, but the game was closer than the score might have you think. These were two pretty closely matched teams.
Michigan lost to UW in the Rose Bowl later that season by 20, but that game was nowhere as close as the score would indicate. UW was far, far better than Michigan and dominated the game.
|2 years 40 weeks ago||I remember a big fight where||
I remember a big fight where a bunch of Michigan players got game misconducts in the early 90s. For the game after that (where the players had to sit out), one of my friends made a sign reading "We Support our Troops". After the game, he gave it to Aaron Ward who was one of the guys suspended.
I don't remember if those suspensions were from a game against MSU, but it's very possible.
|2 years 41 weeks ago||How could Nike make such a stupid color choice?||
It's like giving Michigan a red alternate jersey; the same shade as that school in Columbus.
Does Nike know nothing about the teams they're outfitting?
|2 years 43 weeks ago||I used credit cards to||
I used credit cards to destroy my credit while a student at Michigan and had to work very hard to restore it. I made very poor decisions at that time. Now, 20 years later, I have a credit score over 800, no debt other than a mortgage and a nice chunk of change in savings. Anyway, the high credit score is not hard to attain. You just have to be responsible and diligent.
Currently, I use my Amazon rewards card for everything: food, gas, shopping, etc. I pay it off every week and try to have a balance of zero when my statement hits. I also have a number of other cards that I only use to keep them active: Amex, Visas from several major banks, a couple of store cards.
Here are some tips that might help you build credit:
Good luck and be responsible.

I knew Mike in college and he was always a sincerely nice guy. After college, I ran into him the day of the Red Wings Stanley Cup parade in 1997. He was serving beers from behind the bar at The Post downtown. Other members of the team were there, with the cup. It was quite the party. Mike and I chatted for a while and it was good to see that he was still the same old Mike.
It's been great to see him stick in the NHL for so long. I hope this is the year he finally "earns" his name on the cup.

|3 years 9 weeks ago||As a member of the national media||
it's hard for me to understand how a professional writer could create a headline like that and not know what it implies. I work for a major cable tv news outlet and if one of our people wrote that as a headline or banner, there would be hell to pay. If it got on the air, someone would be fired and several other people would face reprimands. I have no doubt.
When I saw this headline first reported, my first reaction was "that writer should be fired". I don't think I've ever said that about a mistake in the media. Mistakes happen. They're not pretty, but they happen. This ESPN headline could not have been a mistake. If it really was a mistake, the writer should not be a professional writer.
|3 years 15 weeks ago||No. There is no "south Detroit"||
Detroit has a downtown, an east side, a west side and "southwest Detroit". There is no such thing as "south Detroit". The only thing south of Detroit is Windsor. There is also no such thing as "north Detroit".
Trust me. I grew up in Dearborn, a few blocks from the Rouge plant and a stone's throw from southwest Detroit. If you don't want to trust me, look at a map.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||That's a deceptive image||
What that still image doesn't show you is that the ball is still moving. It's not under the player's control.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||It's good to watch game video and analyze, but||
The VT player never had control of the ball until after it hit the ground. It's clear in the gif posted above. The ball is still slipping through his forearms when it hits the ground. Once it hits the ground and stops, he wraps his hands around it.
This is not a case of the player having possession and the ball moving as the player hits the ground. In this case, the player never had possession of the ball. This play is akin to trapping the ball or one-hopping it.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||There's no way that's a completed pass||
The ball is sliding between his forearms when it hits the ground. The ground stops the ball's movement and he wraps his hands around it.
It was almost a fantastic catch.

Coupons brought it on himself when he cried about MSU's bowl placement.
It's not a sign I would hold up at a game, but I laughed and nearly spit soda all over my living room when I saw it.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||Va Tech gave the game away||
Virginia Tech made bad coaching decisions and executed poorly. Sometimes, if you play another team close, they'll make mistakes and the ball will bounce in your favor.
Michigan's been on both sides of this situation in the past. Last night, they were on the winning side.
Yes, they deserved to win.

The new Adidas jerseys? I'm not a fan. The shoulder stripes are blatant corporate branding. It's not a "throwback", no matter how many times those in charge try to say it is.

|3 years 23 weeks ago||ESPN is ridiculous||
Instead of showing the Michigan game, they're doing a PSU memorial post-game. This is disgusting. Paterno was fired for inaction so ESPN is spending the day mourning his career.
Now, they're carrying the post-game newser. They need to stop the PSU stuff and show football.

Why didn't McQueary stop the abuse when he saw it happening? Why didn't he yell out "what are you doing?" or "stop that!"

I've said this for the past 20 years and I would support it 100%.
|3 years 31 weeks ago||There were some raised eyebrows in my section||
Certainly no one freaked out, but a number of people, including myself, kept an eye on that plane. We're not used to seeing planes fly over the stadium and being only one week removed from the September 11th anniversary, people were understandably very aware of potential issues.
TheDirtyD, it was not the possibility of a mechanical problem or accident that had people concerned. It was the fear of an intentional crash.

|3 years 32 weeks ago||And to advertise Adidas||
The stripes on the jerseys have nothing to do with history. It's Adidas trying to put more advertising on the field. They did the same thing to Notre Dame's jerseys. The stripes are part of the Adidas trademark. It's like Nike incorporating swooshes into the Denver Broncos' uniforms a few years back. I think it looks terrible, but I'm not going to freak out about it.
I love the night games; the jerseys, not so much.
|3 years 40 weeks ago||Gotta Love Emmy||
I've said since I was an undergrad 20 years ago that if we must have a mascot, it should be a giant block M with feet sticking out of the bottom and arms sticking out of the sides. Just to rub in the faces of other schools and all the goofs who want a mascot.
I think it would be at least as cool as Stanford's mascot.

Michigan's current jersey is more of a throwback than this rugby jersey.

Thank you, Vada, for what you gave to the University of Michigan as a student-athlete and to the people of Ann Arbor as a police officer.
Vada was a senior my first year at Michigan. I never ran into him on campus, but I sure do remember him and Tripp Welborne in the secondary on gamedays.
I was always proud that a fellow Michigan alum became a police officer and loved the fact that a former Michigan player was keeping the people of Ann Arbor safe.

I could not agree more. A good coach doesn't rely on one scheme for his offense or defense. A good coach adapts his system to his players.
