Hearing the Michigan Marching Band play "The Victors" or "Temptation" live is something unique to a Michigan game.

Michigan forgave Webber for the timeout. I remember when the team returned from the title game and held a rally at Crisler. The crowd cheered for Webber and begged him to return for another year. No serious fan or alum held that timeout against him. Ever. It was a terrible mistake and most of us felt bad for Webber rather than being angry with him.
Years later, he lost a lot of support because of how he handled the Ed Martin scandal. Webber lied about it and even committed perjury. That made the situation more difficult for himself and the university.
I've always cut Webber a lot of slack about the Martin thing, until now. After reading about the Dan Patrick interview (I can't bring myself to listen to it), I'm done with Webber until he apologizes for taking money from Ed Martin and staining Michigan's reputation. And I don't think that will ever happen.
As for the hints about wishing he'd gone to State? After today, I wish he'd gone there too.
Want to know what it really means to be a Michigan man? It's someone who puts their university, their team, their family and their friends above their own interests. A Michigan man is a leader who eats last. A Michigan man is someone who does the right thing, even if it has painful consequences for them.
Chris Webber went to Michigan. He wore the maize and blue. He represented the university on one of the biggest stages in sports. But, over time, Chris Webber has shown he is not a Michigan man.
|1 year 10 weeks ago||After reading that, like||
After reading that, like Webber, I too wish he'd gone to State.
I can't forget watching him lie to a room full of people while we were both students at Michigan. He noted that kids were paying good money to buy replicas of his jersey while he couldn't afford to eat at McDonalds. We later learned that wasn't true. Ed Martin was giving him $500 (or more) handshakes.
Webber embarrassed himself and the University. He's refused to acknowledge it and refused to apologize. Now he hints that he might have prefered to have attended MSU? I don't know what to say other than, "I wish you had, Chris."

|1 year 20 weeks ago||For long-term investing,||
For long-term investing, index funds are the bomb-diggity. That's where I keep 99% of my retirement savings. Look for low fees from places like Fidelity or Vanguard.
For savings, there's nothing wrong with "higher interest" savings accounts via Ally Bank, Barclays or others. Best rates right now are only 1% which suck, but you have easy access to your money. Interest rates at most brick and mortar banks are terrible. I wouldn't bother with them at all.
You can get a slightly higher return on CDs than on traditional savings, but your money's locked in them for six months, a year or longer.
As Bluebyyou says, be skeptical of specific advice because most brokers are using you to make their living. They're more interested in helping themselves make money than in helping you make money. And, of course, a lot of stock advice is just people trying to boost the price what they already own.

Just thinking about it makes me realize how bad the current recruiting/scholarship system is. The NCAA needs to trash it all and start over. I think you forgot the "/S".
Saban's a good coach, but Alabama's over-recruiting practices are shady. Yes, other SEC programs do it too, but it's still shady.
In other situations, when a program suddenly gets very, very, very good (looking at you, Oregon) or suddenly gets amazing recruiting classes (looking at you, Ole Miss) after decades of sucking or mediocrity, there *might* be something fishy going on. Certainly, it's not always the case, but I think it's silly to ignore the possibility.
The bottom line is that claims of wrongdoing in no way prove that coaches and schools aren't doing anything wrong.

You think stripes are what people think of when they think of Michigan?
Yes, there is an iconic helmet, but it's typically noted for the wings. There's a reason people call it the "winged helmet" and not the "striped helmet".
Regardless, I don't want either on the jerseys.

Adidas' logo is three stripes. They put stripes on everything.
All this "throwback" regarding Michigan stripes has been marketing smoke to let Adidas put their corporate logo on Michigan uniforms.
It's like when Nike redsigned the Denver Broncos uniforms to include a swoosh.

If Dave Brandon is all about "The Brand", why does he dilute it with crappy alternate uniforms? Branding is about consistency and presenting a unified image and message.
Michigan has one of the best uniforms in college football. That's why it's so sad to see these terrible replacements.

In my time as a student, from 1990-1993, I don't remember Michigan Stadium being called "The Big House". Maybe Keith Jackson or another announcer used the term occasionally during that time, but it was not common usage among fans.

"This M, fergodsakes".
I prefer "Michigan" on the helmet, but it's not a big deal. I'm honestly surprised that some people never realized the name of the school was on the front of the helmet. You might not see it very well on television, but it's pretty clear in photos.
|2 years 10 weeks ago||That's the same thing I had||
That's the same thing I had to figure out on the final exam. I enjoyed the class and it's the only blue book exam I remember so it certainly made an impression. I've told the story many times over the years as an example of how students learn to think at Michigan (and other good schools) versus how students are taught facts and opinions elsewhere.
Now, if I'd failed that exam, it might be a different story. Hehe.
|2 years 10 weeks ago||Yes. Sounds like we were at||
Yes. Sounds like we were at Michigan around the same time. My friend was there from around 1986-1992. I was there from 1990-1993.
I didn't hear about Oksenberg's death until a few years ago when I got the urge to google some of my old college professors. Very sad.
Oksenberg was my professor for PolSci 140. I still remember the final exam: Just one question: "What was the theme of this class?" or something similar. Tough one to answer since we studied a series of countries as individual cases. Never discussed a theme. After writing my answer, I went on to explain why I disagreed with what I found to be the underlying theme. It was a bit bold, so I was surprised that I still got an "A". That exam is part of how Michigan taught me to think for myself.
In hindsight, the theme was probably correct, but it's debatable.

A lof of Grad students didn't like him? Why was that?
By the way, a friend of mine also took a lot of classes with Lieberthal as an undergad and in grad school. He seemed to like Lieberthal, but I think he preferred Michel Oksenberg.
For me, there was really only one UM professor I didn't like: Raymond Tanter. I took several classes with him because he was pretty much the main Middle East political science prof at the time. He always struck me as being too certain his opinions were correct and too quick to dismiss contrary views.

There are a lot of great classes that I barely remember since it was 20 years ago, but one I do recall fondly is PolSci 160 with Kenneth Lieberthal. Something about the way he explained things that just clicked with me. I took a number of classes with him and always enjoyed them.

I remember how people used to rave about his lectures. I thought they were okay, but nothing worth raving about.
He was clearly passionate about the material and that's a bonus.

I dropped Arabic that day and took German instead.

Atlanta guy here who will soon be an MLS season ticket holder. I thought this was hilarious!

I live in Atlanta too and I've always thought "Atlanta Flames" was one of the worst team names. Why name a sports team after a tragic event? There's no "Boston Massacres" nor a team named the "Fukashima Tsunamis".
Although, now that I think of it, the "Chicago Mrs. O'Leary's Cows" might be cool.

EDSBS is right. Traffic in Atlanta sucks on a good day and most people here have no idea how to drive in a little snow.
Still, city and state officials should take a lot of blame for this. They should have coordinated school transport, encouraged businesses to wait to send home workers and released government workers after private sector folks had time to get out of the city. They should have had their newly-purchased salt trucks out ahead of the snow to get a little salt down in advance.
Personally, as a Michigan born and bred driver (who took drivers education in a Michigan January, ferchristsake), I had a hard time understanding the traffic jams. I drove my two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, sports car home yesterday on side streets that were a little wet and slushy, but not too bad. The main roads were gridlocked and barely moving. My 20 minute drive took two hours, but at least I got home. I really feel bad for people who spent the night on the interstates.
The worst part is that this will all happen again the next time Atlanta gets snow.

Funny. I still remember the house party in AA when we were both students and Everitt wanted to fight me. I have no idea why. He kept pointing at me, threatening me and getting in my way when I went to the keg. Maybe he thought I was someone else.
When he was away to get a beer or for a bathroom break, I asked his two friends what his problem was. They didn't really have an answer even after I told them I'd never met Everitt before.
Since he had about five inches and at least 50 pounds on me, I kept my distance and managed to avoid being broken in half.
Great player, but a strange guy.

Right. Which is why Segura should have been out. There were two blown calls: first, when Segura was tagged the second time (after stepping off second base); second, when Segura stood on first after Braun was called out. You cannot run the bases backwards in MLB.
