|3 weeks 4 hours ago||In the latest UFR, Brian||
In the latest UFR, Brian lamented play action on the 3rd and 10 touchdown play. I think that may actually have been a higher level move by Harbaugh that makes sense.
We were playing with a backup QB who clearly came into the game appearing rattled and gun shy. We were down 5 points with 5 minutes left, meaning two FGs wins, so on 3rd and 10 it's reasonable to anticipate that the team would just go ultra-conservative and run the ball to preserve the FG and then play for the defensive stop with time left to get a second FG.
Harbaugh calling play-action there makes sense because lots of coaches do go into conservative shells with backup QBs and 3rd and 10 is precisely when coaches decide to cut their losses and avoid a turnover with a safe playcall. I think it's totally believable that we'd run the ball up the middle there.

It was nice to see the team not get worse as the game progressed. The team didn't collapse or self-destruct due to some inbred defect. Instead, for once we just lost because of regular football mistakes.
I have a hard time separating the RB problems from the OL problems. I watched and thought our RB's looked slow, and looked like they were running toward contact without any wiggle. I thought the OL appeared to at least know what they were supposed to be doing, they just weren't great at accomplishing the goals.

That is the problem. You just favorably compared the poor play in Utah's game to other poor performances by the team. The performance against Utah was listless and uninspired, and that has become a far too regular occurrence. That it was not the worst we've endured under this leadership is damning.
A game like Utah won't sink a coach if that is the worst his team has ever performed and it appears to be an abberation. Continually falling short of even rapidly diminished expectations is the harbinger of doom. Losing to Utah in this fashion surprised too few people and it is the culmination of it all, and the confirmation that the Notre Dame game was not an isolated incident, that has caused the reaction we are seeing on the board lately.

I was in the gridlock on I-75 last night for 12 hours, didn't make it home yesterday. Abandoned my car when the exit I was trying to take had a 6 car pileup. Walked the rest of the way to my mom's house. From work to my mom's house was 6 miles. Had I tried to make it the additional 6 miles to my own house, I'd have been stuck until around noon today.
The real issue was not so much the weather, but that every school, business, govt entity all shut down at the same time, and the mass exodus of people vastly exceeded the capacity of the roads. Couple that with inevitable accidents from cars spinning out and otherwise not knowing how to drive in ice and snow, and we had a logjam that was so dense none of the emergency vehicles were able to navigate through to respond and keep the lanes clear.
The result was an unmitigated disaster, but the weather was more of a catalyst than the primary cause.

So many of our drives seem to end in blocked shots, because it doesn't look like we go up strong. Maybe it's fear of drawing a charge. We go up, then when the help defender comes, we try to go up and under and end up with an easy shot to block because it's released down low, or we fade away from the basket and end up with a fadeaway jumper rather than a layup attempt.
We also don't seem to be very good at dishing the ball in the lane at the end of drives when the help defender leaves his man. It just isn't a strong point for our guards.
I'd rather see McGary develop a post game where he can create offensive chances for himself, and create a threat of an inside/outside game to create open looks for the shooters. We take a lot of slightly contested perimeter shots because our guards are good enough to create some space with their ballhandling, but ball movement in terms of crisp passing seems to be lacking overall.

Article says "Every year since 1985, at least one child of Fay and the late Steve Odeh has been enrolled in the University of Michigan, graduate school, medical school or law school." but then it says the youngest child "begins his final year of law school at Fordham University in New York in August, so the 28th year of kids in college will be the last."
Something doesn't seem right about that. If he's been at Fordham for two years, and he is the last of the kids in school, didn't Michigan cease to have an enrolled Odeh sibling 2 years ago? Unless the youngest one transfered (which seems unlikely given the family's affinity for UofM, or unless there is another sibling who just graduated from a Michigan program without being mentioned, the article seems messed up.
Anyway, that satisfied my need to waste time. Thanks for posting this. Good thing they don't have a Bump in the family.

Since you have a job, not only do you have the cost of your three years of tuition to consider, but also the three years of salary you're giving up to attend law school. That is likely going to be a tremendous cost, and it will probably take a decade to get to the point where your earnings after law school surpass what you'd have earned if you never became a lawyer. That is true I think even if you land a decently paying job. There are too few legal jobs that pay well enough to enable young lawyers to repay their loans.
I went to a school which at the time was ranked 25th by US News, after attending Michigan for undergrad (I was out of state at Michigan). The school I went to was in-state for me tuition-wise. I graduated with the lowest honors about 5 years ago. My first job out of school was in a defense firm, and it paid me $45,000.00.
I went straight from undergrad to law school, and did so because I didn't have another job. There was basically no oppotunity cost in terms of giving up a paycheck, since I couldn't find a job anyway, and I went to an in-state school. Still that job was barely worth it.
I think law school still makes sense, but the circumstances in which it does are shrinking. I don't think changing careers to become a lawyer is the wisest choice these days.

Legal compliance does not spare Paterno from punishment here, nor should it. Paterno's prominant position as a head coach, but more importantly as a public face of and embassador for the university comes with a greater moral responsibility. He represents the school publicly, and is part of its public image. Any corporation or institution would demand that its members behave in a manner than favorably represents the entity.
If Paterno broke no laws, he won't be punished by the legal system. However, the penalties levied by society against his legacy and reputation are deserved in light of his moral failures.
His actions, or inactions, clearly do not reflect the standard that Penn State strives to adhere to, and removing him from his position is exactly what they needed to do.

Denard hasn't really taken any hits on the sidelines this year. That tells me that he is getting out of bounds when he does get there. Last year, the most brutal hits he took were when he would get the sideline and turn it up field, from there, he just turned on the jets and went all out, sort of out of control, so when he would take the hit, it was usually a fairly solid blow from a crossing defender with Denard not able to brace himself.
He seems like he is running under control more, being more patient, and thus isn't moving at 100% speed when he takes a shot.

|4 years 21 weeks ago||Amazing to me that this is||
Amazing to me that this is where we are now in terms of hopes and expectations. Who would have thought that anyone would even consider Hoke's ceiling to be that high, or non-existent?
I'm hoping for a self-fullfilling prophecy with Hoke. The team is going to be better next year, and that was going to happen regardless of who the coach was. But since Hoke is the new coach, he will (rightly or wrongly) be given credit publicly for the improvement. That will make him look good, even if he's not responsible. Looking good, coupled with media love, which he will get for not being the last coach, will result in people believing he actually is good. If people believe he is good, well, recruits are people too, so good players will come play for him. Having good players will make the team actually good, and it will look like Hoke is responsible for it all, even though I really think this was set up for any warm body of a coach who got hired after Rich Rod.
Maybe this was the plan all along...the brass realizing that Michigan had gotten stale, and instead of trying to drag us forward, forcibly pulling us backwards to set up a slingshot propelling us to greater heights. Putting a Michigan Man at the helm of the rocket gives us all something we can latch on to and love while we enjoy the ride.

|4 years 24 weeks ago||Morris and Kiel||
Assuming everyone works out and no busts, from the players' perspectives, it seems that it wouldn't make sense for Michigan to have both Kiel and Morris come in back to back. With Gardner, Kiel, and Morris, at least one of them would get stuck only one year (eligibility-wise) behind the guy penciled in ahead of them on the depth chart.
If Kiel doesn't get redshirted, he has to beat out Gardner to have more than one year as the starter. If Kiel gets redshirted, Morris would have to beat out Kiel to get more than one year logged as the starter. These guys seem high profile enough to likely expect more than just one year as a starter.
Russell Bellomy is also in the competition, so it seems like things would be awfully crowded. I would love to have this problem, but i think it is unlikely that Michigan could land, and keep, both Kiel and Morris.

I know its a joke, but does anyone really expect the family values card to lure kids away from OSU? Given what has been going on, I have to question whether the kids that committed to OSU did so for valid reasons as opposed to the under-the-table benefits that would likely be available during their tenure at the school.
We were spared a bullet when Tressel got Pryor and we didn't, but Pryor seems to just be the centerpiece, and prime example of a larger problem there. Do we really want to fill our team with the types of players Tressel has been bringing on board at OSU.

Congrats. I'm a relatively new MGoDad myself. My future softballer is 3 months old. I'm not sure there's really any advice I'd offer other than to do what you and your sig. other are comfortable with.
Ultimately, your new baby should enhance your life in every way, don't get bogged down with trying to be so perfect and trying to plan/prepare for everything that you can't enjoy the ride while you're on it. It's hectic, confusing, and sometimes scary, but if your baby is sleeping, eating, pooping, and peeing then you're on the right track.
I found that everyone has their own opinions, their own experiences, books that they followed, old wives tales, whatever, just listen to the people you trust, who have managed to raise kids without going obviously insane, and do what feels right.

I grew up in the south but my parents met at Michigan while they were students there. Both have undergrad and post-grad degrees from UM, I was born in Ann Arbor while my dad was a resident at the university hospital.
My grandfather went to Michigan too, as did 2 of my older cousins, and I followed the tradition and got my undergrad degree. Unfortunately, I was too much of a dumbass and didn't get good enough grades for Michigan's law school.
Now I'm saving up so if my baby girl decides she wants to go to Michigan in 18 years, I won't have to tell her that I can't afford it. She does seem to have freakishly long thumbs for a newborn, so maybe she'll be able to put wicked spin on a softball and get a scholarship and save me the trouble, but judging by UM's softball success, she's gonna be a longshot...

Maybe he really does suck at coaching fundamentals compared to other coaches.
Maybe the players on the Denver Broncos superbowl winning teams had already learned fundamentals sufficiently to warrant their inclusion on a superbowl winning roster.
Maybe the players on his other NFL teams had been similarly well coached in fundamentals to warrant their inclusion on NFL rosters.
Maybe the one year he was at Texas he had awesome players who had already been coached with good fundamentals before he left.
Maybe in the 1970's and 1980's when he was working his way up the college ranks he had really good schemes and ideas that worked based on how football was played at the time, and he was able to get by on those schemes, and the fundamentals taught by other assistant and position coaches, and as football changed, the game passed him by and his schemes were no longer capable of masking his inability to teach fundamentals.
There, now you can't say that no one has addressed the point of your post, which was that GERG surely must be well versed in fundamentals. It's possible that he isn't, as compared to elite division one coaches.

An OSU grad at my firm tells me he thinks this is all overblown. When they investigated Michigan for practice violations, were they able to investigate recruiting and other issues as well for potential violations elsewhere, or was the investigation limited to the specific violations?
Just wondering if having the NCAA all up in our business and coming out without any dirt on our faces regarding recruiting or impermissible benefits implies that we're pretty clean, or whether it has no bearing whatsoever.
|4 years 37 weeks ago||Tressel = Teflon||
I've been convinced that Tressel was dirty as far back as the Clarett days. I was amazed that the school passed that guy through without anything sticking.
Since then, despite all the smoke surrounding OSU, we never found fire. Then Tressell managed to deviously manipulate the Tat-5 situation so that not only did he get his bowl game, but he guarunteed their return for another season. Despite hating Tressel deeply for coaching OSU, and beating us repeatedly, I actually began to admire, in a jealous sort of way, his ability to dodge bullets without even appearing to move.
I am rooting for the NCAA to stick this to Tressel as hard as I root for us to beat OSU every November.

I got my first job in October of that year after basically 2 years of panic, and got it over the other candidates mainly because I told the partner who interviewed me that I could play shortstop or third base on the softball team. Turns out he was the shortstop and felt like he was too old to keep it up, and wanted to move to third base. This kind of random thing actually happens. To be quite honest, I'd probably have done the same thing if I were choosing between equivalently qualified candidates.

My favorite part was when Brady was still in the game with 3 minutes left and the announcers were discussing why. One of them alluded to Brady's backup, Bobby Hoyer and said "where did he go to school?" the answer, obviously, is Michigan State, and he implied Brady just doesn't want to let little brother get playing time.
|5 years 7 weeks ago||On at least one of the||
On at least one of the overthrown balls, I believe it was the first one, Denard didn't take enough time. He pump faked to make the defender bite, and then he immediately chucked it deep. He had time to pause a moment before sending the ball deep. The receiver had already gained separation due to the pump fake. If he takes a second longer, he could have read the play a bit better. Instead he just pump faked and airmailed it deep without really seeing the receiver. That's my lay person's take on it.

I have a lot of confidence in our coaching staff at the moment. I think that when we unquestionably have an overall personnel advantage over our opponent, I will be very confident that we will win.
In past years, even when we had better players, I was always worried that we would blow a close game to an inferior opponent. Now, if we play an inferior opponent I think we'll destroy them as we should.

It's fairly apparent that the SEC's best teams this year are not as good as its best teams in recent years past.
Arkansas is up, and would be a tough team for anyone to beat. Auburn looks good but not special. Alabama is still excellent, but not quite like last year. LSU's offense is the opposite of ours, but their defense is stout. FLorida is quite obviously down offensively. Georgia's program is starting to resemble ours of the past 3 years, or at least Tennessee's at the end of the Fulmer regime, which yea...
This is definitely not the SEC's strongest stable of teams. I'm not sure any one conference is up though this year.

|5 years 18 weeks ago||My experience||
You probably have the option to take the exam on laptop or handwriting. You probably also had that same option during law school exams. I recommend writing the BAR essays in whichever format you did for your law school exams. Don't switch up.
Make sure you're aware of whatever rules are in place before you walk in. If you handwrite, and need to use blue ink, that's something you want to know about before you sit down with nothing but black pens. Even though you'll easily borrow a pen from a friend, that kind of thing just flusters you. (I offer this advise from personal experience). If you're taking your laptop, be sure its reliable.
Otherwise, its standard stuff. Don't burn out studying or trying to learn new things this late in the game. Focus on the practice essays so when you see a question on an exam, you'll have a wealth of topic specific responses on recall. It's amazing how automatically you can recall exactly what you wrote on your practice essay in response to a similar issue. Once you've written enough practice essays and familiarized yourself with the answers, the BAR exam itself just comes down to issue spotting. Once spotted, hopefully your mind will just dump its contents onto the page/screen.
It if is a two day exam, seriously consider a hotel for the night in between. For me, I didn't want to see my wife or family in between the two days of the test. I just wanted to try to not think about the test, and even positive encouragement from family forces you to keep thinking about it. I called my wife after part one, and spend the rest of the evening in the hot tub of the hotel I was at.

I feel like LeBron has allowed himself to be painted into a corner somewhat. Maybe he never wanted to, but I don't see how he could sign with the Heat now and not appear as if he's just following the crowd to a stacked team. If he wants a legacy, probably he can't go to Miami with his friends now that they signed first.
Also, with Wade, Bosh, Stoudamire and Johnson off the market, there isn't really anyone worthwhile that can join him wherever he signs. Unless he signs with the Knicks to play with Amare, or with Chicago, then he's going to be right back in the same situation as he has been in Cleveland, without a decent teammate to share the load.

|5 years 26 weeks ago||lots of things to think about||
Sorry for long post - trying to be helpful.
My advice if you go to law school, from having recently been in in the labor market, to now being at a firm and having interviewed law students for our summer program is this: treat law school as a career audition, not as a learning experience.
One question to ask, unfortunately, is whether you are a minority or a woman. If so, the legal job market will be wide open, and you'll find little trouble getting job offers if you finish in decent standing in your graduating class. I'd ask also what you want to do (defense, plaintiff, government) but given your debt, it sounds like you need to end up with a large-ish firm doing defense work and billing by the hour.
The difficulty finding a job was the thing that shocked me the most by far. I graduated law school in 2007, and have been practicing in a law firm for 2+ years now. I went to a top tier school located in the same state as the city I wanted to live in. The upper eschelon of law schools was unavailable to me, due to less than stellar grades at UM, so I went with what I thought would help me get a job.
Nothing helped at first. I was unemployed from graduation in May until October that same year, at which point I jumped at the very first offer I received because I was in no position to be picky. That doesn't seem like a long time, but I had been applying for jobs solidly since the end of my first year summer, meaning I really spent 2+ years without an offer. I was not alone in this either, it was a challenge.
Every single thing you do in law school should be with the goal of getting a job in mind. Finish as high in the class rankings as you can, participate in any activities you can, take a job (ANY job) in your first year summer, publish a law review article, etc. Don't bank on good grades and a good personality getting you a job. There are too many people in the job market, you really have to make it impossible for a firm to pass you up.
Also, the money isn't as good as they make you think it is, unless you end up at a big law firm in a big city, or until you've been an attorney for a good 5+ years.
