Ok, maybe it's just a semantics thing. I meant canned in its definitional sense of "prepared in advance" not in some inauthentic, half-assed kind of way. |
| 2 weeks 6 days ago | Right, that seems to be the |
Right, that seems to be the conventional wisdom. It's just been my experience that it doesn't really correlate, and my sample size is fairly significant. I admit that I'm in the minority (and in a particular field), so if you're trying to land a job, it's probably best to play the odds and stick to the traditional script. Especially in situations like yours which requires the splitting of split hairs to find the "best" candidate. Also, age may have something to do with my non-traditional stance (I'm early 30s). If I was Herm's age, I probably see phone use as a blatant disrespect to nonagenarians everywhere. |
| 2 weeks 6 days ago | I believe the last one still |
I believe the last one still matters. It's a formulaic response to a formulaic interview process (i.e behaviorial/STAR), so showing up unprepared for these questions is like showing up in a t-shirt. It's ritualistic, and if you don't do it, you get bounced. |
| 2 weeks 6 days ago | Agreed, most people can't do |
Agreed, most people can't do it, and we don't really prioritize/value it. But if I'm choosing from a few candidates, I'm taking the most productive one, phone-checker or not. And besides, everyone checks their phone on the job, so faking like you won't during a one hour interview isn't that impressive. |
| 2 weeks 6 days ago | I don’t doubt that on the |
I don’t doubt that on the whole, hiring managers choose the candidates who dress up, stay off their phones, and have canned answers ready to go. So if you want a job, you do those things. If you work in a field where your craft is gab – and there are several – it probably matters that a candidate can quickly whip up some tale about leading a team through some perilous journey in Uganda or something. (And make sure you throw in somewhere that you delivered the team ahead of schedule, as this is a critical piece of nonsense.) But in my experience in the transportation sector, we have been just as successful hiring quirky types and candidates who are willing to say “I don’t know” in an interview. The correlation between good interview and good worker has been nearly non-existent for us, so lately we’ve just been over-hiring and then booting the people we don’t like over the ensuing weeks and months. Anyway, we wouldn’t much care if candidates/employees were on their phones. If they can do that and still be listening/productive, then good for them. That’s multitasking, I guess. |
| 5 weeks 1 day ago | Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm |
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm firmly in the "bring it on" camp. It's just that I think many people were willing to take an unbalanced tradeoff (presuming the divisions are actually unbalanced) to get OSU and M, and to a lesser extent MSU, in the same division. Will people be willing to accept further lopsidedness in the future when there's no proportionate benefit to Michigan? |
| 5 weeks 1 day ago | Lopsided Future? |
What happens if, as expected, the B1G expands toward the mid-atlantic? The natural response would be to put Indiana in the West, right? Depending on who is added, the East could become even more top heavy. |

Too many teachers get into the profession for moral reasons, and as such, they are wiling to accept far less to work. This grossly distorts teachers' market value. The good news is, the push to "run schools like a business" should help to get rid of some of the bleeding hearts, as many still strongly believe that cut-throat competition doesn't really belong in K-12 education. The incoming crop of business-like teachers will certainly bring something different to the table, but they will also likely demand higher wages for the job they do. Anyway, it'll be interesting to watch it all play out. |

My sense is that McGary will probably be a turnover/foul/airball machine if he roams too far from the basket. Also, without Stauskas on the floor, it's going to be brick city from three. But yeah, Robinson just seems lost out there at PF. Beilein needs to try something, I guess. Maybe it's time for "Burke and Hardaway shoot, everyone else just rebound" and hope for the best. |
| 10 weeks 10 hours ago | Michigan doesn't have a |
Michigan doesn't have a skilled big. Sadly, we're relying on players that no one else wanted (Horford, Morgan) or a true freshman. Michigan is generally doomed once the ball goes into Zeller, Payne, Berggren etc; They can either help out and leave Hulls, Harris or Brust open for three, or sit back and watch those big dudes repeatedly make bunnies. Needless to say, when M throws the ball in to Morgan, Horford or McGary, Stauskas won't be left open for the kick out. Obviously, there are other problems, but this one seems like the most glaring.

Only MSU can start the 14th, 16th, 17th, 45th, and 74th best players in their respective classes and still feel like they've been shortchanged. Their team is stacked. And barring a crazy tournament run, they'll be stacked again next year, too. But having zero commits for '13 and 14, and the thought that Harris, Dawson, Payne and Appling might all be gone after next season, has got to be giving Spartan fans some pause. |

I'd like to see them implement a 10 game conference schedule and add an FCS/cupcake exhibition game. Both teams get a nice payday, players get eased into the season, redshirt-bound freshman/depth players get to play, and conference games are maximized. If conferences keep expanding, they'll have to do something, and this is probably more feasible than lengthening the regular season or forgoing revenue. |

I understand them getting a small bump (or holding steady) from a good showing on the road. What I don't understand is why they seemingly aren't dinged for their close wins. With McGary and Morgan potentially splitting time next year, there's a fair chance we see a 3rd year out of McGary. Then if you consider the Freshman-Sophomore "jump" for Walton and Irvin, and the potential to add about 3 impact freshman (e.g. Devin Booker), I think you've got a contending squad. I have to admit, if M loses all three to the draft, I think '13-'14 ends up a bubble year.

Punting average wasn't my point-- Magnus brought that up. My point is that unless Wile is markedly better than Allen, M is probably better off diversifying a bit. He's the same guy that averaged 31.9 yards per punt this year. We'll need Wile for kickoffs and long field goals, and unless there is a massive chasm between Wile and Allen, I doubt the staff will want to throw him out there at punter too. |

| 50 weeks 2 days ago | Some Thoughts |
I took the revised version about 6 months ago. Honestly, there's not much you can do about the vocabulary, although memorizing high-frequency words will help some. Also, focusing on the subtle differences in synonyms (e.g. obscure/recondite) and common words that have multiple meanings (e.g. appropriate, intimate) will help as well. The math portion should largely be review. Many questions are designed to waste your time in calculation, so always be on the lookout for shortcuts that should help limit/eliminate massive number crunching (e.g. division by zero, absolute value quantities equating to negative numbers, etc.) The writing portion is a crapshoot. Based on my score on this portion, I believe I am only qualified to give advice on what NOT to do. The bottom line is that a couple weeks of serious effort should get you a score above the insta-cut line at most every school, and for grad school, that's really all you need. If you are planning to memorize thousands of words, I think your time is better spent making a compelling and focused SOP. Good Luck. |

This is a good move for all parties. Temple always felt they were too cool to be in the MAC -- even though they weren't especially good at football -- and the Big East needed to add somebody. Finding a BCS-level football program was going to be a tough sell for the Big East, so they did the next best thing by adding a good basketball school from their core geographic footprint. The MAC won't miss them, and Temple gets in where they feel they rightfully belong. |

It is important to remember that the youth football development system in his hometown is terrible and that his coaches are working with players that come from families with bigger concerns than football. I was on the Manual football coaching staff, and I know his coaches. They understand and can teach the game. But I agree with Magnus, though, LTT isn't yet ready to be a M-level starter. This is mostly for reasons beyond his control. Kids from his neighborhood have been told "they can't" for their entire lives. Some lose hope, and others respond with a giant "fuck you, hater." |

It's going to be difficult to quantify individual Mgoblog "activity". If you are looking to gather posting frequency data, you could have users: 1. Head to their my MGoPoints activity page 2. Sort data by "operation" 3. Total up (or, more likely, estimate/calculate via beginning and ending page numbers) all the posts categorized as "insert"* 4. ??? 5. Crash Server/Profit As for quantifying other types of activity, yeah, no clue. Perhaps Brain could help you. *My oldest MGoInsert date is 05/28/2010, so I'm guessing somewhere around there might need tol be "day zero" for your calculations. |

I think MSU makes a compelling choice for grad students, especially for those who are headed for lower-paying fields. If you aren't lucky enough/smart enough/connected enough to get funding, saving 30-50 grand in unsubsidized loan debt (at 7% interest) by virtue of attending MSU instead of M is a serious scale-tipper. |

It looks like the session went from 9:30-11:00 this morning and was titled: “Important Issues Facing High School Football And Recruiting.” That's a pretty vague title, but if Heck was talking about the recruiting process, he was at least in the topic's vicinity. |
| 1 year 18 weeks ago | I agree that rates for most |
I agree that rates for most channels will increase as consumers are allowed to customize their programming (although the reverse will occasionally happen, too). Bundling, however, is only sustainable if consumers want the vast majority of what they are paying for, and I'm not so sure that's currently the case with TV. The most damning thing, in my estimation, is the fact that all the media behemoths are actively fighting against a-la-carte; It indicates they recognize the likelihood for consumer savings/lost revenue. |

I agree. I was becoming a little uneasy about it. I think there was some risk of Hoke being characterized as a coach who is too lenient on talented players. He's too new on the job to not be hardline. When you consider the plethora of cynical dinks in the local media, this was the right choice for the program. |

| 1 year 22 weeks ago | Cool Story Bro |
I've mentioned this in other threads, but I coached FB at Logan's school. It's a tough area and the fact that he's still in school and trying to "get out" is an accomplishment in itself. A few years back I had a student in class who had academic and athletic promise. He suddenly missed several days of school in a row, and when he came back I was ripe to bitch him out about how he's likely ineligible and his college dreams were in serious jeopardy. I didn't get the chance because he came back apologizing and begging for me to work with him to keep him eligible. I was waiting for the bullshit excuse when he showed me the bullet holes in his leg and side. I said, "Oh, nice to have you back." It's a strange and difficult place. |

I think it's a great move, and a potential solution to a difficult catch-22. They don't have the luxury of staying in power through a vast network of wealthy alumni and fans derived from years of hegemonic rule. People get upset about a hire like this because they feel threatened or because they are idealists who refuse to accept the true money-war-by-proxy nature of college football. Kudos to Coastal Carolina for openly acknowledging it. |

| 1 year 23 weeks ago | This wouldn't preclude teams |
This wouldn't preclude teams from making the FCS to FBS jump. If this is solely a pride issue then there's a reason why those schools are poor: They're stupid. |
| 1 year 23 weeks ago | So why do the little schools |
So why do the little schools play along? There must be a reasonable explanation, but I've never seen it mentioned. Is it about prestige? Because if so, then I don't understand it because there's little prestige in being used. |
| 1 year 23 weeks ago | Right, but as I've noted |
Right, but as I've noted above, the poor schools have the potential to make up some of that lost revenue. Schools like those in the MAC will get maybe 2 million for their 3 bodybag games. They'll save half that in scholarship reductions and reduced expenses. Add several hundred thousand for additional home games and you are almost there. I think the rich conferences have much more to lose than the poor ones. |

| 1 year 23 weeks ago | Teams only have to hit |
Teams only have to hit 15,000+ once every two years, and they can use either actual attendance or paid attendance to hit 15,000. I'd guess last year they used University/Donor/Pepsi funds to buy up the unwanted tickets to hit the 15,000 mark. If this year's meager number stands, they'll have to do whatever it takes to hit 15,000 for the 2012 season to stay in the NCAA's good graces. EDIT: Too Slow |
| 1 year 23 weeks ago | Playing midweek games |
Playing midweek games actually hurts EMU's attendance numbers. Perhaps the ESPN exposure will pay off in long run attendance figures, but it's a challenge to get people there when some students are still in class and the nine-to-fivers are just getting out of work. It's a challenging spot for the MAC-type sorts. |

I don't like baseball, and I'm fine with never attending a game or watching one on tv. If fans choose to make players billionaires, that's great. What I don't like, is that if I want any televison programming at all, it requires a portion going to overpaid baseball players that I don't care about. In our supposedly consumer-driven economy, the lack of programming options in tv is stunning. It's a muddy market that is driving these things. |
