It's TOO EARLY!
|20 weeks 13 hours ago||Curse of Borges||
This is admittedly a really good point, but is a kid really doomed to fail just because Borges recruited him? Seems a little memeish and distanced from reality. Speight is only a RS freshman at this point and could potentially have four years of being tutored by Harbaugh rather than Borges.
How is this a knock against Speight? Lots of QBs train with a private QB coach to get better and get more exposure. And that happens in high school, college, and the NFL. Also, lots of parents who see potential in their kid pay for private lessons or put together highlight reels. I feel like your assessment of Speight is a little unfair.
|20 weeks 15 hours ago||This is about as well-reasoned as anything||
|20 weeks 16 hours ago||Hey, I'm 6'2"||
Sure, I think it's tall enough, but I'm not an NFL scout, and apparently people knock on 6'2" guys because it's not "prototypical" height (which is what, 6'4"? bfd). Of those four QBs you mentioned, only really two are franchise QBs in the NFL. If Malzone is the next Brees, then I say hell yeah. But what if Speight or Gentry is the next Luck?
|20 weeks 16 hours ago||I just figure people haven't||
I just figure people haven't had their coffee yet.
Look, we're not talking about who the actual starter is... at least, I'm not. Obviously, in that sense, it's way too early to know. Okay, yeah, I'll grant that we haven't seen much of Malzone or Speight beyond high school highlight tape, but to be fair, we haven't seen much of Peppers beyond high school highlight tape either (he wasn't exactly Mr. Impact last season), and everyone seems to think he'll start for sure based on that.
Really, I was hoping the discussion would go this way naturally, but I guess I'll just come out and say it: Which would you rather have as the starter: a 6'2" accurate guy who has the potential to be the next Drew Brees or Tom Brady, or a 6'6" beast who looks like Harbaugh could make him into the next Andrew Luck?
I'm really torn on it. I want to give the nod to Speight since he's had the benefit of redshirting and getting through a year of physical training. I don't feel too great about throwing Malzone to the wolves as true freshman, either. But if Malzone is really Mr Accurate and he's ready to play then hell fuck yeah I want that guy as the starter.
Obviously whoever gets chosen will be OK because of Harbaugh. No one is questioning that. (At least, again, I'm not.) If anything strikes me as pointless, it's the "Whoever Harbaugh" and the "Too Early for My Brain to Even Think about this" responses. Those things don't contribute anything to the discussion other than to hurr hurr mgosnark. Excuse me for wanting to talk about football and there being barely anything to talk about.

What's wrong with at least broaching the subject?
I realize the season is a long ways away, and we will probably add 10 more QBs before then. But I mean hypothetically, if it came down to Malzone or Speight, who would you choose? I think that's not a too OT topic for the Mgoboard.

Texas and Strong are going after Murray hard. He's an in-state guy who most fans want because he's the type of player Mack Brown would have passed on and then go on to win the Heisman at another Texas school. It would be a bigger deal (from a Texas perspective) for Strong to get a homegrown five-star like Murray rather than keep a pro-style four-star statue like Gentry.
Right now Gentry is Strong's consolation prize if he can't flip Murray, but if he loses both, there is going to be serious egg on his face.

Yeah, you're a highly rated football stud, but you go out and shatter your femur, muck up your knee, etc., nobody will want anything to do with you. Don't feed the beast that makes it that way.
If he's genuinely torn, that's different. If he really wants to wait and make his decision after a few weeks of careful thought, I'm cool with that. But to say it's cool for him or anyone to be a primma donna is not something I partcularly dig unless they come to Michigan and back it up in a big way. So in general I'm only cool with it after the fact, not before.

You'd think if anyone could understand and/or sympathize with Harbaugh, it'd be Jimmy Johnson. He won big at Dallas and got pushed out because he didn't get along with the owner. Then he goes back to a place he was familiar with and the people rejoice at his homecoming. Sound familiar?

|28 weeks 6 days ago||WTF||
How blind are you? Can you seriously not see how Ohio State winning a national championship may be a bad thing for their arch rival?
|28 weeks 6 days ago||For the last time||
Ohio State and Meyer winning a national championship IS NOT GOOD FOR MICHIGAN!!!
For the love of Christ, people! HOW CAN YOU NOT GET THIS IN YOUR FUCKING MINDS?
Meyer will use his national championship win against Michigan in recruiting. Until Harbaugh beats him or wins a Big Ten championship or a national championship, we are fighting an uphill battle.
How anyone can think that Ohio State winning it all somehow helps the Big Ten is beyond me. If I'm Kirk Ferentz, Darrell Hazell, Tim Beckman, or Mike fucking Riley, I'm shitting in my pants right now. Jim Harbaugh will be competitive at least, but those guys don't stand a fucking chance.
|28 weeks 6 days ago||This x 1000||
I'll never understand why people think Ohio State winning a national championship somehow helps the other Big Ten teams, let alone Michigan. Meyer will just use it against everyone in recruiting that his program is the only one in the Big Ten to have won a natty in the past 10 years.
The rest of the Big Ten should be on fucking suicide watch. They're the ones who have to play this asshole every year and his lights-out recruiting classes.

First, Marcus Ray is a defensive guy. So what if he's nostaglic about the offense that was run when he went to school there? He, like everyone, wants Harbaugh. If Ray somehow helps convince him to come, I'm all for it. His opinion on the spread is just an opinion. Just like yours, mine, or Brian's.
Let's not forget that we all love the same team here. Show some respect and try not to be so divisive.

That's an attention grabber.

Brian has said and written "F**k Dave Brandon" both here on this blog, in podcasts, and on the radio. I think the ship has sailed on him remaining unbiased at this point.

|44 weeks 14 hours ago||Re: "Aggressively Reasonable"||
For the record, I believe Hoke should be fired. His mishandling of the Morris injury situation was beyond atrocious. I don't think I need to say any more than that.
However, if I remain Aggressively Reasonable, as Brian puts it, will I be banished to Bolivia? I'm no fan of Hoke or Brandon at this point and I was the guy who started the "the Program will Burn Down to the Gwound" thread as a joke that got deleted, but generally I tend to take a moderate view of things. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with being Aggressively Reasonable, and I think it's healthy for the MGoCommunity to have that voice every once in a while.
Yes, here, at this moment, it doesn't really apply. Hoke and Brandon have made me, who tries to be reasonable and always give guys a chance and the benefit of the doubt, completely lose all faith in them as leaders of the program. But I mean going forward, I'd like to stay reasonable and not get punished for it.

Built a phenomenal OL at Central Michigan(!) and has a great OL coach. Also coached QBs and transformed Kirk Cousins into the Big Ten's best QB at the time. He also runs a pro-style offense and runs it very well. I watched CMU's last two games against Chat and Purdue and they were impressive. It wouldn't surprise me if Enos won the MAC this year.
Only downside is that he's an MSU grad and that might (read: would) rub people the wrong way possibly. But honestly, after all the "Michigan Man" b.s. over the years, does it really matter? He's competent.

No, I wouldn't. But for a guy who hasn't really done anything, he sure does get talked about a lot. People call on Sam Webb's radio show and constantly praise Drake Johnson and their argument in favor him adds up to nothing more than "Give the kid from Ann Arbor Pioneer a chance!" It just strikes me as local nepotism.
Honestly it doesn't matter much to me who carries the ball, as long as they produce. But if you want my preferences, I'm going with the guys I got excited about when they committed.
|48 weeks 12 hours ago||Re: Drake Johnson||
I'm actually not bummed that he didn't see the field until late. I know a lot of people have written off Green but I honestly prefer him as the starter given his pedigree.
I realize everyone loves Johnson 'cause he's a local boy, but if your starter is five-star Green, your back is a four-star #1 RB from OH, your third option is RS JR Justice Hayes (also a four-star), and your fourth stringer is a two-star from Pioneer, that's not terrible.

I have to disagree with this, because you're basing this criticism on 20/20 hindsight. If Gardner chucks it up, "see what happens" could mean an INT. I think he's been coached by Nussmeier not to make unnecessary throws. The draw didn't work but I think it was the right call. If you're carving up a team with passing, they're probably thinking you're going to pass on a third and long, in which case a draw makes total sense and has considerably less risk.

I knew, or rather surmised, that BiSB would win by a landslide even before I voted for him, so the results didn't surprise me at all. He offers a highly balanced offense that can score and the best defense of the group. |1 year 6 days ago||I found it hilarious not||
I found it hilarious not because Penn State selected a woman, but because Penn State selected Sandy Barbour.
Sandy Barbour is a terrible athletic director and has made every place she has been worse. She makes disastrous hires and then bolts before they crater. Practically every decision she makes is politically motivated (and I don't mean "office politics"). She practically destroyed Tulane's athletic department single-handedly and tried her best to unravel Berkeley. So, naturally, I'm thrilled that she's now the AD of Penn State, a place I hate with the fury of a thousand suns.

Meyer's a scumbag. How can anyone be surprised that he talks shit about Michigan to recruits?
I'm personally more surprised that a coach who won 24 straight games in his first two seasons feels the need to bash a program that is clearly struggling, instead of, you know, brag about being 24-0 for that time and 2-0 against Michigan. If Michigan and OSU were both undefeated and everything, then yeah, I could see the reasoning behind trying to get a few inches ahead. But this? You're 2-0 against Michigan, man. Get some ethics.

|1 year 3 weeks ago||My opinion on Brandon is mixed.||
First, I don't think he should be replaced. I think the good he has done far outweighs the things we're complaining about.
That being said, there are some things he could do better. Sending the band to neutral site games shouldn't even be a debate, for one. He could also maybe take some time off the "Brandon's Blog" thing and maybe be a little more hands-off the football program.
I don't think the Hoke hire counts against him. He followed it up with shelling out the cash for whoever Hoke wanted on staff. Not every AD does that. (Martin didn't do it for RR.)
I also emailed Brandon back in 2011 about the helmets being changed and uniforms going all yellow and how I was worried about this, and he actually took the time to write me back and assure me that, on game day, the football team will remain consistent with Michigan tradition and history. Okay, so some of it was a little condescending (we know better than you type stuff), but I was impressed that I even got a response. Most ADs don't give emailers (even if they're alumni) the time of day.
Do I think Brandon has some things he could improve on as AD? Yes. Do I think we should maybe back off him a little bit and appreciate the good things? Sure. He's not the monster or incompetent moron that some people make him out to be. While some of the people here might think that they could do a better job on certain things, I personally don't think any of us could do a better job overall.
Just my two cents.

If Michigan went 1-11 with the 1 being against ND, I'm pretty sure heads would be chopped off. And I don't mean the heads above people's shoulders.

Why are you so sure Borges said anything? He never struck me as the type of guy who "bad-mouths" even after he was let go. This wasn't the first time he was fired. He didn't bad-mouth Tuberville or Dinardo after the fact, so why would he do so here?
I know everyone hates Borges because of 2013 (the bad parts, anyway), but for Christ's sake give the man some credit as a human being.

As much as I hate Dantonio (loathe / utterly despise, actually)...
Pretty sure this isn't true. I used to look at it that way too. But I'm 99.9% sure that after three years of recruiting at a high level under Hoke we can't blame it on RR or that MSU picked up recruiting when we were down. Dantonio is just frustratingly good at developing players.
Doesn't make beating him and MSU any less important. The staff has to step up. But, peronsally, I'm done sleeping on MSU. I think the game last year convinced me beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Three years. THREE YEARS! FOR FUCKS SAKE, Hoke's been in charge of this program for THREE YEARS and we're still blaming RR and saying Dantonio caught us with our pants down? No. He's built something real in East Lansing. It pains me to admit it, but we're going to have to fight them tooth and nail as long as he's there. The days when MSU shits the bed (especially against us) are over. At least for a while.
Fuck I hate this post, this whole thread. Thanks for making me write this depressing shitpiece of a comment.

I don't even know why this is a question. If we lose to Notre Dame, I'm slightly bummed. If we lose to MSU, I'm pissed. If we lose to MSU and OSU in the same year, I'm crawling on the ceiling spewing exorcism related things.
So we beat ND. Big fucking deal. It impacts us zero percent in the Big Ten and doesn't matter a lick in the MNC if we lose to MSU and OSU. Those are the two we have to beat. And if we go 2-1 with the loss being to ND, you know what? Fuck it, I'm going to be fucking happy.

Why are Jake Fisher and Denzel Ward on this list? They've never been on the roster and didn't even sign an LOI to Michigan. Does that mean Dee Hart is an "Ex-Wolverine" too?
I feel like calling this thread "Former Wolverine Players and Coaches" and titling the blogpost "Ex-Wolverines" is a little misleading. I get that you like to follow some of these guys even if they don't end up at Michigan, but I think it could be a little clearer. "The Magnus Thunder Fun Watch" or something. "They didn't go here, but I'm following them anyway" type of section or tagline. Might as well add Kate Upton to the list amirite?
Anyway, always a pleasure to read your site, Magnus.

|1 year 4 weeks ago||I'm as frustrated about 2013 as anyone.||
But let's move on. This bullshit about Hoke being on the hot seat needs to stop or at least settle the fuck down. At this point it's just restating the obvious.
Yes, Hoke and the team need to show improvement, but we don't know for sure if "the trajectory" is spiraling downward. Changes have been made.
This crap is just the narrative we have to suffer through until we undergo a MSU-like transformation over the course of a season. They were the laughing stock of the conference in September last year, and then suddenly they were legit contenders in November, and now everyone thinks it's going to be them and OSU for the rest of infinity. College football can change on a dime.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||Re: OL||
I don't think it's necessarily indicative of him "whistling past the graveyard." In addition to being OC, Nussmeier is also the QB coach, so it makes sense that when he looks at sacks he looks at the portion that his position group contributes to it.
With regards to RBs and WRs, those he could be focusing on from a schematic standpoint. "Getting playmakers in a position to succeed" and whatnot. True, like anyone, I was looking for Nussmeier to say something about the OL that can give me hope, but I don't think we're going to get anything of that sort until we witness actual change against App. State.
But yes, I hope it is the latter of your two scenarios as well.

|1 year 6 weeks ago||LSU||
It would both surprise me and not surprise me if he ended up at LSU. I don't think he really fits the systems at either Cincy* or Miami, but LSU could be an option. But how often does LSU seriously go after a quarterback who isn't at least moderately coveted by other SEC powers? Seems like it would be a reach on Miles's part.
I personally think he'll end up in the MAC.
*Cincy offered him anyway (according to 247) and he could be Munchie Legaux 2.0. Kiel's going to need an eventual successor and if Campbell were to develop enough over two years, it's possible he could be that guy.
