Great hire for Washington.
This blows my mind. He turns down SEC jobs, Penn State, Ohio State, UCLA, USC, but says yes to Washington? Unreal.
Regardless, he is a great coach and Huskie fans should be thrilled. I'm always happy to see Washington get a leg up on Leach and Washington State, so good for them.

Green's not out of shape. The top photo looks different than the group photo. His shirt's untucked in the top one and he's walking (see Tuley-Tillman behind him similarly).
In the group shot there's no indication that he's overweight.
|17 weeks 22 hours ago||fwiw||
I'm not seeing what everyone else is seeing. Does Green actually look fat? I just figured it was where the photo cuts off (before his knees) and the way he's standing (looks like he's in mid-walk) and the fact that his shirt is untucked. It's not like he's pulling a BWC and his gut is poking out of his shirt.
Seriously, look at the group shot. If Green's fat, Rawls is fatter.

|19 weeks 4 days ago||I think it's kind of||
I think it's kind of ridiculous to suggest that the fanbase is any part of the problem. Fans don't hire and fire coaches. Athletic directors do. Fans can cry, bitch, and moan all they want, but it doesn't make a lick of difference in the grand scheme of things.
The fact that some Michigan fans were unhappy with Rodriguez's decisions had no bearing on what he did on the field. (Or at least it shouldn't have.) "I want to win, but the fans won't let me!" Sorry, dude, but that's absolutely absurd.
I will say this: I never hated Rodriguez, but I wasn't sad to see him go. Like many Michigan fans, I desperately wanted him to succeed because that's always better than going back to the drawing board. But when a head coach makes bad decisions and doesn't live up to expectations, then he has to go. That's just how it is at big programs.
Regarding "Michigan Men," I don't know why so many people hate this idea. It's like they think "Michigan Man" directly means Mike DeBord instead of Hoke, Harbaugh, or Miles. Personally, I don't think you necessarily have to have been a coach at Michigan to qualify as a Michigan Man, but you do have to know what the fuck you're doing and be inclusive rather than divisive. When Bo came in he let it be known how important the Ohio game was. He didn't say "I don't need to talk about that. If I need to get my players ready for Ohio State" blah blah blah. You're the head coach. You've got to do more for big games than just the weekly generic inspiration speech of STRAP IT OOONNNN.
|19 weeks 4 days ago||Same for me||
I remember when I first showed up on campus, people were like, "Dude, Michigan got Rodriguez! Your four years are going to be epic!"
|19 weeks 4 days ago||RR vs fanbase||
Who's really at fault?
Yeah, it was pretty much all the fanbase.
I really can't get this type of thinking. Even though I had lost pretty much all confidence in RR's leadership by the end of 2010, I still made the trip to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl. Only to watch our team, after having had a month to prepare, show zero improvement, get destroyed, and look completely ridiculous. So yes, it is because of the fanbase that Rich Rod failed at Michigan.
Unless, of course, the "accept change" you're talking about is going from being a team that had 35 consecutive winning seasons to... not being a team that had winning seasons. Then yes, some of us were unwilling or unable to accept that change.

I guess any day is the "wrong day" to go there. I remember I got steamed when I went there to read a Northwestern post and the first comment was "Fuck Michigan. That is all." and the next were all in the same vein and green'd.
|20 weeks 3 days ago||I know you're making a funny,||
I know you're making a funny, but just so you know, that's not the case. OTE gets 200+ comments a post, which is pretty much the opposite of "under-trafficked." Granted, many of these comments are brainless, pointless "F Michigan" comments done by the same seven people over and over again, but it's still way more than what we've got going on on Maize n' Brew in terms of comment numbers.
|20 weeks 3 days ago||Interesting that||
it's never Ohio State week on OTE.
Also, OTE was started by a Michigan alum? He must have vanished from the site.
Interesting that OTE comments say "F**k Michigan" even when it's the hate week of some other team. And now they're calling "F**k Michigan" a sign of unity?
It's a sad sight when the only people defending Michigan (and I use that term loosely) are not even fans. Seriously, you guys. Our fan base is frustratingly under-represented on that blog.

As a young guy, RR was very adaptable and willing to try anything that worked. That's how he came up with the spread zone read option.
However, as he got older, and certainly when he was here, he was very close-minded because the spread (and on defense, the 3-3-5) had got him that far and so it was like "Why change? The way we've done things worked for us at other places. Besides, this is all we know how to do."
Carr at least allowed his coordinators to do different things. Admittedly, no one will confuse any of Carr's offenses as "innovative," but he did more than just run the i-form. iirc his offenses passed the ball way more with Henne in the shotgun, for instance.
|20 weeks 5 days ago||Meh. RR's offense was||
Meh. RR's offense was overrated.
I got all excited about RR's "exciting" offense when he first came in, but it wasn't exactly a world beater in 2010. It's not like we stayed close with anybody competent. We only scored 14 points against Mississippi State. Woo offense.
|21 weeks 21 hours ago||Sorry for getting harsh but||
What end of last season were you watching??
He had four rushes. FOUR.
And he ended up getting -3 yards. You can argue those -3 were on scrambles, but either way you're loosely defining the terms "a lot" and "a bunch." He's not a poor man's Colin Klein. Not even close.
If Jim Bollman is going to attempt to make anyone into Troy Smith 2.0 it's going to be Damion Terry, not Connor Cook. If anything, they're going to try to make Cook into Cousins 2.0.
|21 weeks 22 hours ago||Cook is not a dual threat.||
He may be more mobile than Maxwell or obviously Navarre, but that doesn't necessarily make him a dual threat.
I don't think it's fair to defend Heiko's statement based on what Michigan fans may or may not be familiar with. That's like saying "Well, this guy is a pocket passer kind of like how anyone not named Denard Robinson is a pocket passer."
The stats show that Cook rushed 4 times for -3 yards. Yeah, he's a dual threat.
|21 weeks 22 hours ago||Connor Cook = dual threat guy?||
I think you're confusing Cook for incoming freshman Damion Terry, who is regarded as a running QB. Cook only had 4 rushing attempts in 2012 and ended up a total of -3 yards.
He might be "more mobile" than Maxwell, but a dual threat? Someone who Jim Bollman will attempt to make into another Troy Smith? Not a chance.

We lose to OSU in the Big House, which hurts, but we face them again in the Big Ten championship and win. OSU's national title hopes are dashed and we go to the Rose Bowl, where we face UCLA and win.

Wow. Never thought I'd see those words.
|23 weeks 6 days ago||Nope.||
Up until November 30, that schedule is a cakewalk.
|23 weeks 6 days ago||Herbie the Impaler?||
Not so much. 11W once gave him that illustrious title for predicting Arkansas would beat OSU in the Sugar Bowl.
I think a lot of this is him trying to get back into Ohio fans' good graces, but also the Buckeye schedule is practically cake up until Michigan, so stating that they'll be undefeated is not all that bold.
Yeah, he's predicting a win over M, but that's because he's a Buckeye. What the hell else is he going to say at an OSU event? "Ohio State could play in the national championship...if they get past Michigan"? Cue the boos from Buckeye fans.

I always thought numbers were assigned by the coaches. How else do you explain J.T. Floyd getting #1 in 2008? Or Devin Gardner making the switch from #7 to #12? Or all those other stories where a player says he walked into the coach's office and the coach said "You're wearing this number"?
Interesting. I wonder why James Ross didn't choose #6 as a freshman then. It was available, and that was the number he had in HS.

The fact that he made this video just proves how much he did not fit in here. The guy just can't stop being ridiculous.
|25 weeks 1 day ago||I heard this story about||
I heard this story about Tuberville too. Basically after about three years Tuberville decided "Let's not change what has worked", and when deficiencies started showing up, the general mode of thought was that they would eventually be shaken out, which hand-cuffed Borges from adjusting.
Borges always seemed to work best at previous stops where he arrived and evaluated what worked. This could perhaps explain his early success at Auburn.
Ideally, the offense under Borges could be successful every year if 1) deficiences are kept to a minimum, 2) there's a consistent level of elite talent coming in, or 3) he has a head coach willing to let him tinker and see what works.
I think he has all three at Michigan going forward. We'll know for sure in a few years.
|25 weeks 1 day ago||Hoke hired Borges because||
Borges is a good offensive coordinator. We saw in part 1 that Borges can be a great offensive coordinator when he has talent to work with.
I imagine part of the reason why Hoke hired Borges at SDSU and brought him to Michigan as well was because they share the same philosophy, and Borges is wicked smart. I don't doubt that Michigan's offense will be elite with the talent coming in.
The lesson that we can learn from Borges's history is that he will maximize the talent he has (see Michigan 2011), but he needs some talent to where he can feel comfortable. Obviously the injury Denard suffered and lack of running game in 2012 made the offense take a step back.
I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Borges just yet and say we need a new OC.
Also comparing Mattison to Borges isn't exactly fair. Look at where Borges coached:
Oregon (pre-Chip Kelly)
Now look at where Mattison has coached:
Michigan (Lloyd Carr)
Mattison coached at programs that were in championship discussion (well, 3 of 4 anyway). Borges was on a lower tier (at the time). Saying that Hoke shouldn't have hired Borges because his resume doesn't compare to Mattison's is like saying Hoke is a worse coach than Rich Rodriguez.
|25 weeks 3 days ago||I like the new phrasing||
"left the west coast" makes much more sense, and has a nice poetic ring to it.
|25 weeks 3 days ago||Question.||
Didn't Borges previously coach at Boise State and Oregon? Wouldn't that constitute as leaving California?
I guess you could argue that Boise State wasn't yet Div 1-A, but Oregon definitely was.

Agreed. I thought it was really weird that he said his parents wanted to move with him.
Don't they have jobs? Even if they're retired, why not stay in Ann Arbor than upend their lives? Besides, you can stay in contact. I Skype regularly with friends and family, and you can always visit, or they can come out and visit you.
|25 weeks 4 days ago||As someone||
who has basically been on his own since he was 18, I have some suggestions.
1. Don't move out until you're ready. Everyone matures at different stages and it has to be something you can handle emotionally.
2. That being said, an RA is a very manageable job. It depends largely on how you view it or handle it. You can be a really active RA and check in on everybody, or you can be a more laid back RA and deal with things as they come. I don't know anyone who was overwhelmed from an RA job if they took it in stride. If it's a new school, treat it as if you're a summer camp counselor and you're arriving at the camp for the first time. It's more about being the responsible role model.
3. Take any opportunity you can get at free housing. It doesn't get any easier once you graduate permanently and have to start paying the rent. If this RA job offers you a chance to live for free and save a little money so you can have some fall-back cash, I'd say that's a pretty good deal.
4. Don't be afraid to ask advice from other people. No one expects you to have all the answers at a place with which you're unfamiliar. Try to make friends with an RA who has been there for 2-3 years and pick his/her brain for how they go about it.

Not a word.
Case in point:
"Tremendous academic reputation." False: Minnesota is not highly regarded outside the state of Minnesota. They're no Harvard and certainly no Michigan. Not even close.
"One of the Top 3 Leading Public Institutions in the world today." False: In the world, Minnesota doesn't even crack the Top 100.
"Outstanding group of professors on this campus." False: Well, true if you mean outstanding warrants. (jk)
"Tremendous tradition and history in football." Massively False: Minnesota's winning percentage is .571. Their bowl record is 5-10, because in their entire history they've only played in 15 bowl games.
"6 national championships; 18 Big Ten championships." False: Minnesota has something like 14 Big Ten championships total, all of which came before 1962. Also four of their 'claimed' national titles came with as many as three losses those seasons. 8-3? NATIONAL CHAMPS!
"We have as fine a tradition as anyone in America today." Massively False: Minnesota has a total of 661 wins. Michigan has 903. Texas has 867. As fine as anyone in America? Give me a fucking break.
"TCF Bank Stadium, the finest brand new on-campus facility in America." Debatable, but ultimatley False: TCF Bank Stadium is a toilet. It might be a shiny toilet, but it's still a toilet.
"Our fans will enjoy something on a Saturday afternoon." False: Not a win.
"I want little kids to dream about being a Minnesota Golden Gopher. To come to TCF Bank Stadium, have a great day, watch a great Gopher victory, and then that night, go home, lay down, and dream about being a Minnesota Golden Gopher." False: Not happening.
"There's a tremedous commitment at the University of Minnesota to win." False: Someone didn't tell their players.
|26 weeks 1 day ago||The National Championship trophy||
It's essentially fake. Even if they did what you said, it's still giving the perception that they have won a national championship in the BCS era--hell, even in the Coaches' Poll era. And that's just complete and utter bullshit that Brewster is trying to sell. "Play 4 Minnesota! We HAZ just as much tradition as Mich, Texas, or OSU!!!!!!!!"
As for the academic reputation, what, are you a Minneapolis resident or something?
No one cares about Minnesota outside of Minnesota. I'm in Cali, and here Michigan, Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, MIT, Stanford, etc. are all hugely respected as the top schools in the nation. Minnesota... is not.
|26 weeks 1 day ago||I think it's perfectly||

|26 weeks 1 day ago||My personal vote is for the||
My personal vote is for the Minnesota Goofers. Although honestly it's a tie between them and Purdue.
Purdue just gets killed by injuries every year, and they can't ever get all the way to the mountain top. Even that year that they played in the Rose Bowl with Drew Brees, they fell short. Furthermore, does Purdue have any other claim to fame besides Drew Brees? Any at all? Nah.
Of course, at least Purdue made it to the Rose Bowl sometime in the last 50 years. Minnesota hasn't sniffed a conference title in half a century, largely because their program became apathetic and sucky which led to an eternal cycle of apathy and suckage.
So I'm going to go with Minnesota. Mostly because of this:
Academic reputation? what academic reputation? Also, tremendous tradition and history in football?
Yeah, a tremendous tradition and history of losing. That's a lovely fake national championship trophy behind you, Tim.

|26 weeks 1 day ago||I kind of agreed at first.||
I kind of agreed at first. But when you look at O'Connor's scholarship offer list it's not surprising.
Akron, Buffalo, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Penn State, Rutgers, South Florida, Southern Miss, Toledo, Vanderbilt.
Of those, which is the best offer besides Penn State?
Rutgers... maybe? I guess Mississippi State, Mizzou, and Vandy get some kind of nod because they're all SEC, but they're lower SEC schools. Two years ago choosing Penn State in this scenario would have been a no brainer.
Penn State obviously doesn't offer the chance to go to a bowl (for 3 years), but clearly O'Brien is selling the chance to play on television or go to the NFL, both of which Penn State players can still do.
So yeah, I'm kind of surprised in general, but it's not like O'Connor has half the schools Hackenberg did and is turning them down.
