But it also means that Hoke and co have a lot to live up to.  Historically, Michigan's generally done better when they were ranked lower, or when nobody really expected much of them.

It does mean that the rebuilding days are over.  No more of the "we're three years away" phrase that we've been using since 2008.  The next couple years will determine Hoke's legacy and where he'll stand in Michigan history.  Does he live up to the hype that ESPN and the others are gifting us, or does Michigan join the ranks of the perpetually overrated?

When I was younger I loved John Navarre, so I got a #16 jersey in an adult size that was hilariously large on me.  Nowadays it fits just fine and it also came in handy as another #16 made his magic happen.

As the key to any strength and conditioning program lies in the heart of recovery, cold showers or baths are a useful tool.  Athletes in the Eastern Bloc were very fond of the contrast bath method, where they would submerge themselves in hot water for one minute and transfer immediately afterwards to a tub of cold water, repeating the cycle as necessary.  Crazy, but it works.  This is also why many D1 football players take ice baths after practice.  The sooner, the better.

Whenever my parents came down for gamedays or what have you, I told them to avoid Central Campus like the plague.  So they'd park up near the School of Music and then bus down with me to the stadium.  Guaranteed free parking, little hassle, and easy to get out of as well. 

Of course, I wouldn't really recommend that to anyone not familiar with North Campus, as it'd be ridiculously easy to get lost.

Well at least we beat Penn State in something.

They published The Sims, so they'll always have a special place in my heart for that.

Sometimes after a loss one might go crazy, blame everybody, call for someone's head, be generally mad at the world.  Last night wasn't like that for me and it hasn't been like that for a lot of people from what I can tell.  Afterwards people talked of what a great season it had been and what a game it was.  That's not always the case.  Last night was something very special, and as a Wolverine, win or lose, it was incredible to be a part of.

September 1, 2007?

Monday night I had a dream that I woke up and Michigan had lost to Syracuse.  I was sad that we lost but also seriously miffed because the sports world had promised me that it would take place on Saturday, and I'd missed it.  It felt so very real.

I've consulted a number of witches and wise men and gazed into the crystal time and again, but I am unsure of what it means.  Are we now guaranteed to win, or lose?

unless you're an introvert who got stuck on North Campus, in which case the dream takes a while to materialize.

Now get Burke too, and that will make my year.

Meanwhile, I'm transferring from Engineering to LSA, also for CS.  May your stint in the CoE be many times more productive than mine.

Lots of hate in this thread.  The prevailing theme seems to be that it's beneath us to allow these dirty immature WWE fans into our totally pure and clean Ann Arbor and loan to them our crown jewel, the Big House, which has NEVER seen a rowdy crowd or a drunk person.  Ever.

I get where it's coming from, kinda, but really, we have a kickass stadium - the biggest in the US - and it only gets used a single-digit number of times per year, and not at all for the majority of the year.  I really don't see it being as big a problem as others seem to.

Everyone's covered the basics (UTL, Ohio State 2011, Penn State, etc), so I'll add my first trip to the Big House - 2002 against Western Michigan.  This was one week after Phillip Brabbs and Washington happened, not that I knew it at the time.  For me, a wide-eyed nine-year-old in a dorkishly big Michigan hat, walking into that gigantic stadium with all those people was just incredible.  Some things you just don't forget.

This damn well better not be the surprise everyone keeps talking about.

I was wondering this as well.  You can't pay just football players and ignore every other sport.  I know football is placed on a higher pedestal than most other things, but that's a step too far.

Lewan, yeah, probably.  Quite honestly though, there's more to being a captain than who we fans think happens to play the best on the field.  It's about who leads in practices, who coaches the underclassmen, who gives it their all every day - as Bo once said, they "have to be me on the field."  And frankly, only the coaches who are with the players every day know these things.  There's more to a player than what they do on Saturday.

According to Jim Brandstatter, the tradition was started by accident.  Way back in the 50s or 60s or so, the PA guy read a bunch of scores off the ticker tape, and when he got to Slippery Rock, the bored crowd gave a big ovation for the school with the funny name.  So they started doing it every time.

Doesn't change my expectations at all, I had 12-0 from day one.  Now we shall win the twelve games by a slightly higher margin.

To a point, it's not about ranking the "best" teams.  Bama's clearly the best team in football, but they still managed to lose a game.  It happens.  Notre Dame is ranked high because they are 12-1.  We are ranked low because we lost five games.  That also happens.

Bo revived the standard, but Fielding Yost set the standard.

They really didn't look as bad as I thought they would, but the numbers absolutely should have been blue.

Look at the timing, though.  Eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Michigan's ball, threatening to put together a long drive, possibly score, and give the ball back to USC with much less room for error.  They needed a big defensive play, and they got one pretty emphatically. 

It was good, yes, but of course the first play we take Lewan off of guarding Clowney, the man goes and kills Vincent Smith which earned him MVP honors and will probably be replayed incessantly on ESPN.  Lewan-Clowney matchup of the ages?  Check.  Clowney with the game-changer?  Also check.

Pretty sure he averaged 48.  Which is still pretty damn good.
