One and dones are still going to be one and dones, but more than likely overseas. I'm not sure why a kid would go to school for a semester just to jump right to the NBA, but there probably would be one or two - It is more likely they just train for a year instead.
THEN there will be a buttload of kids that only play one year instead of two or two years instead of three. I'm not sure how that does anything but seriously damage the athletic programs, even if the focus is meant to be on education first.
FINALLY, it has been said all over within these discussions that the freshmen would still be participating in practices and scrimmages and more than likely attend games. The NCAA would essentially have to ban all "redshirted" players from attending certain meetings/practices or limit their time schedules dedicated to their athletic progression in order to get some sort of academic benefit out of this. And if they do that, how does that help the kid out if his goal is to play in the NBA? You're limiting the "athlete's" progression and in turn hurting their futures as NBA prospects. This MAY even deter some of them from attending school and push them towards a short-term international career before shooting for the NBA as well; I'm not sure how this helps these kids academically.
The kids that want to be in school will be in school, so they don't need a redshirt year if they have the ability to play and still plan to focus on their academics - Not only will you be hurting these kids but the athletic programs that are in need of immediate help.
More than likely if the NCAA opens this back up, you will probably see the NBA react within a year or two by allowing players to play right out of high school (ala MLB), which will be silmilar to back in the Kobe/Lebron days where there was a flood of kids headed for the NBA before attending a college course. INSTEAD, the flood will be even greater and create an even larger issue because of the "redshirt" year requirement.
These are my thoughts at least.

|5 weeks 15 hours ago||It's not difficult at all for||
It's not difficult at all for most of us, but for some of us it's not quite so simple. It's easy to think logically in your own mind, but for some logic is misconstrued and addictions and psychological differences make it difficult for them to make positive life choices on a consistent basis. You do realize that ONE poor decision resulted in these consequences. One bad day. One terrible decision. There may have been another incident in the past, but this is the choice that resulted in him being dismissed.
I may not struggle with a violent past where it is difficult to control my "violent" behaviors, but I do have my own daily battles because of both my encounters and poor past decisions. It doesn't matter what society perceives those battles as in comparison to others struggles, it is still a psychological battle to deal with those struggles and not falter. I imagine it is the same for most of us - we have our evils and things we try to improve upon ourselves every day.
Last thing I will say is that the best thing you can do when you do make those big mistakes is not only learn from them but teach others about how to avoid those situations and how to be more aware of those things - if you help prevent one person from making those same mistakes, then you have turned a negative into a positive. I am glad to see that Frank Clark has started this process.
End of book.

The only reason I think we wouldn't be is because of last years cluster. Analysts in general don't pay a whole lot of attention to the "injury bugs" and probably would assume a normal projection due to gained experience. I think we will be at the bottom of the top 25 without him and around 10-15 with him in the fold, but my guess is with the lineup that will be put on the floor with him (and a bit of an unknown in Wagner) that we will probably surprise most people.
I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with you, but I fully expect this team to be on some analysts final four boards at the end of the season. Again, this is WITH Brown. However, I still think we could breach that status with Williams instead of Brown. I'm going to be super pumped about that kid as well if we snag him instead of Brown. Elite shooter = Beilein magic.

Holy insane depth, Batman. First ever for Beilein at Michigan? Yes, believe so. Even in our most recent great years, our good depth was 7/8 strong.. so this heavily trumps that.
I really wouldn't be surprised to see some early entry NBA guys next year from this lineup... Potential for Levert, Irvin and Walton. If Irvin plays like he has the last few weeks all season long, there will be some definite chatter with him. Walton was on the board before he got hurt and his play suffered from it. And Dawkins, man... I'm not going to say it wont happen.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||Sometimes I wonder how many||
Sometimes I wonder how many of us on this board, especially those that tend to be more critical of others and their mistakes, have littered themselves with poor decisions that they try to hide (expecially from themselves).
The truth of the matter is that there isn't one individual on this planet that hasn't made a regrettable mistake in their lives and hasn't faced adversity. David Harrison is doing everything he can to provide for his family and survive, and props to him for learning from his mistakes and trying to better himself with the situation he's currently in. It's easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves and sulk in our adversity and get nowhere. This man is facing it and trying to figure out how he can overcome it in order to support those he's responsible for.
In no way is this funny. From someone who has learned from his own past mistakes and thankfully been able to learn from them and in turn been blessed from that wisdom, I seriously hope David figures out how to turn that intelligence of his into something that will help bring him the success and fulfillment he desires. He has obviously matured, and because of that he deserves a shot at fulfillment.

Walton > Spike... when healthy. Even when he's not, he still showcases skills that Spike just doesn't have. Spike is a better pure point guard, but we have also learned that Beilein's teams thrive with a skilled athletic point guard.
I guess the better way of putting it is that in no way should Spike ever supplant Walton as the starter where Walton is forced to sit on the bench. He was incredible as a developing freshman, and he has the potential to be an NBA draft pick if he's allowed to showcase that development when healthy next year. He was a projected pick this past year until he got hurt, and this is a guy that should only help is status with another year.
Walton is going to be phenomenal for us next year, and I can't wait to see the development of this team with a healthy Walton and potential Levert return, not to mention Duncan Robinson and the possibility of getting this overseas kid. We seriously have a chance to be an incredibily special team again next year.
And with the projection that Dawkins is currently on, I would not be surprised to see him blow up next year. Like gone to NBA ala Burke/Stauskas blow up.
This year's team is fun to watch, but next year's has the potential to be extremely fun.

I see what you're saying, and I agree with a lot of it. However, there are still a lot of kids that want to make their college choice prior to their senior year, and that number seems to continually grow year after year. Some schools just have to be crossed off the list because of the fact that they can't afford to visit (especially with family).
I think that the kids who want to see that gameday atmosphere and make those late decisions are still going to do that whether or not they have the opportunity to check out the campus on an official before their senior season. I don't think the timelines for a decision of many recruits will actually change much with earlier official visits, but it will give recruits and their families who want to make those earlier decisions a real good look at the schools they are truly interested in no matter the required distance traveled. Some families have the money to do those things on their own, and some don't.

To your point, I think that if he is successful in the NFL... people will forget their lasting views of him at Michigan.
The truth of the matter is that the offensive gameplan did not put him in a position to kill it on the field. Maybe he didn't make the most out of every opportunity, but look at Devin Gardners numbers and tell me Funchess was going to have elite WR numbers even if he did catch every ball. The passing game was terrible, and this wasn't either of the Devin's fault.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||I'm sorry, but Frank Clark||
I'm sorry, but Frank Clark was much better than an "above average athlete." I had no doubts about him getting drafted until that incident. He seemed to me to be another player that underperformed his skills, much like Funchess.
I wouldn't have been surprised to see him snagged in the third round prior to what happened, and I fully expect him still to be grabbed by someone, undrafted or not, and make an NFL roster if he can stay out of trouble. Not just make the roster, but play some significant minutes in his career. He has plenty of "can't teach" immeasureables that will do him a lot of good with proper discipline and coaching.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||All I know is there's a lot||
All I know is there's a lot "ifs" with this current team. I do think we are close to turning the corner, but a lot if development needs to be made with a lot of players in order for this team to play for the B1G title next year (with or without Caris). The one thing we know for sure is that a healthy Walton Jr will be am excellent improvement at the PG position, but I think that's the only for sure expectation as far as improvement goes. I do think MAAR and Dawkins will make that leap forward and turn into excellent players, but I'm really curious to see how Chapman and DJ Wilson look next year. I think Chapman will be better than most expect, but Wilson is a complete unknown with him barely playing this year - it may have hurt his projected development.
Either way, I think next year will be a fun and exciting team to watch again. I don't expect to pick up any high level recruits being that it looks like we may get one with few options; therefore, I don't expect any real new faces that could instantly impact the team in a positive way. Duncan Robinson should provide excellent shooting, but his complete impact is entirely unknown as well.
All that being said, definite improvement next year, but the extent is extremely up in the air. Player development may have never been more inportant given our current youth.

|16 weeks 5 days ago||I'm not here condoning his||
I'm not here condoning his actions or saying the girl deserved it, but as a poster above stated, the girl was out of sorts and approached Mixon looking for an altercation (I believe she was drunk). It is known that she had a history of legal issues, so I say this with the understanding that she was not an innocent party in this incident.
I will reiterate from my post above that Mixon was known to have a good background with no prior incidents in his childhood, so this was very out of sorts for him. Again, there is never an excuse to hit a female, especially in the manner that was done in this case, but I fully understand this as something to not expect in the future with him. This isn't a Ray Rice issue where the footage showed the actions of a completely cold-blooded male - there were faults in both parties, and the end result was Mixon going out of control with how he reacted to the female's actions. His suspension and jail time was understood and deserved, but I fully expect him to learn from this situation as everything I read claims him to be a stand out individual with good morality.
|16 weeks 5 days ago||Going to be honest with you||
Going to be honest with you guys here... I don't think the mindset with Mixon is similar to that of other guys who have been involved with domestic violence. I live in OKC and I've read most of the articles and heard a lot of perceptions of this situation. I think OU fans are still excited about this kid, and the knowledge of him is that this incident was completely out of the norm for the kid and is not quite so cut and dry as "punch girl in face" sounds. The OK media all got to see the footage of the incident, and it was basically what they expected they would see.
There was an article in the Oklahoman this morning with quotes from Stoops about how exited they are to have him back and how good of a kid he is. He does not have a bad background at all, and I will honestly be more shocked if we hear about another negative incident from him (especially to this severity) than if we don't. I completely dislike OU, but I am definitely open to seeing this kid have another chance. One incident should not be the end of a players career.

He's definitely an addition to this team, and I'm excited to see what he's made of once he grows some confidence and realizes he can really help this team.

Do you seriously think Alabama doesn't redshirt any of their players? A team like Alabama who not only recruits well but also develops well should have very few freshmen play in a given year because their depth chart is stacked with talented guys who have been developed. You are wasting years of players' eligibility (and player development) by burning through redshirts just because "it's not what elite programs do."
So much wrong with this one.

I'm pretty sure the majority of the fan base, especially those who paid attention to recruiting, had a difficult time not seeing a future filled with success after that BCS win. I think that was a fair assessment given the success he had in his first year at UM. That's what fan bases do; success results in more success, and failure results in more failure. We live by the day way above what reality tells us where nothing is guaranteed. That's one reason there's so much emotion put into each win and loss by fans.

The mgoboard has been making this loss worse for me. I'd rather move on, but the depressing "I give up" atmosphere here since the end of the game is just plain awful. Thankfully you're all not running the program or this season would be a complete tire fire. Way too reactionary.
I hate losing just like the rest of you, especially the way the game ended, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this team will perform under adversity with a fanbase screaming for their coaches heads. At least you know the players love this coaching staff, so I hope this will motivate them to work even harder and beat the piss out of the B10. I'm going to support this team AND coaching staff until the end - Give Nuss time to work on this o-line before you crucify him as well.
On a side note, I actually saw some improvements in our running game. We all knew the O-Line would be a work-in-progress with improvements over the course of the year. Hopefully they improve enough by the time the MSU game comes around.
Looking forward to Saturday's game.

|41 weeks 5 days ago||The reason I stated this as a||
The reason I stated this as a "religious discussion" is because religion defined the culture in which this country was founded for which still influences our nation to this day, which resulted in a particular known judgment towards homosexuals. It is because this nation was first a Christian nation that homosexuality has been such a hidden topic for so many years. Over time those viewpoints have been challenged and we are now seeing a rise in acceptance of homosexuality.
That is why this is a religious topic, because if it wasn't for conservative religion this would never have been the hot button issue it is today. Not all Christians or religions see homosexual behavior as immoral, just as not all non-religious people view it as moral. But the fact is that Christianity has always been a reason for why this is now newsworthy because of the culture it helped define, which is what I meant by a religious topic. I didn't mean anything by that other than I just wanted to help make aware the fact that the issue really shouldn't be whether or not we agree with the life he lives but that we should commend him for being real with who he is.
I meant to stop before but I felt like I was being misunderstood, so I apologize if my statements offended anyone. Again, my main point is to bring unity to the idea that no matter what beliefs we have regarding homosexuality, we need to feel compassion for those who feel they need to live in a dark hole to protect themselves from "haters" and acknowledge that this is a very bold and embraceable motion.
Mods, feel free to delete my comments if needed.
|41 weeks 5 days ago||I have learned over time that||
I have learned over time that you are correct about homosexuality not being a choice. The actions are choices, and that is where my moral beliefs kick in. This is where I wanted to stop the discussion because of the boards standards.
All I can add is that I have made an insurmountable amount of immoral choices in my lifetime, so I have no judgment towards sexually active homosexuals. And I will not pretend to understand homosexuality because of the scientifical aspect of it; I am not a homosexual, so there's no way for me to grasp what it's like to be homosexual or to feel a sexual attraction towards another man. And this is the case for every heterosexual male or female regardless of your viewpoints on homosexuality.
I apologize if I stepped overboard the religious discussion, I just wanted to clear that up. This is all I will say from here on out about this. This is such a sensitive topic, and rightfully so. I wish extremists from both sides could choose love over hatred.
|41 weeks 5 days ago||The thing that I don't like||
The thing that I don't like about topics like this is that they become heated and result in a lot of hate towards particlar thoughts/beliefs regarding homosexuality as well as the particular individuals they involve. "Religion" is the main reason why this is such a big deal in the first place, so to say "no religion" should mean that these things should probably not be brought up on the board in the first place only because it restricts comments to one particular viewpoint and prohibits others from expressing themselves.
That being said, despite the fact that I am a proclaimed Christian and have my own views on the subject of homosexuality, one thing I can say for sure is that I am proud of him for allowing himself to come to terms with his homosexuality in that he is not afraid of the decisions he makes and what people think of those decisions. I truly believe that if you make decisions that are regretful and are morally against them yourself, you should do everything in your power to correct those behaviors. If you like the decisions you make and find them moral and just, it is sad to think that you would be forced to contain those beliefs/life choices within yourself and "hide" from the world - So many negative consequences come from that, and I imagine that must be an extremely tough world to live in.
I respect and love those who are real about who they are, and I truly wish those who do not agree with his life choice would still love him for being real about himself and love him for who he is as an individual. Unfortunately, this is not the case most of the time. And that's truly sad and hateful, which is not what "we" are called to be.
I will only go this far in the discussion since this is not a board for "religious discussions," but I do wish those who see this from the other extreme realize that those who have differing opinions on "homosexuality" are not terrible people just like those who practice homosexuality are not terrible people - When it's an issue of hatred towards a particular individual, then it becomes inhumane and unjust regardless of the viewpoint.
I, too, wish for a day where these things don't have to be a huge media event any longer.

If Drake Johnson turns out to be the starter, I'd say that has more to do with his actual skill than the lack of skill from Green and Smith.
The only position group that I feel is questionable is the O-Line. I don't know why, and maybe this is every year and I'm just too excited for the season to start, but I feel like the coaches seem to be a lot more positive about their team as a whole this year. I see that especially from the defensive side, but I feel like I can recall a lot more "need to step up" talk from the O-Line throughout the preseason and during the season last year. Hoke seems to speak positively about specific players on how they're doing, which to me seems to be an improvement.
Not saying we have an All-Big10 line this year based off of what I'm reading, but I'm becoming more optimistic about where things could be. Wait and see I guess... *sigh*

I had similar thoughts. From how I took it, Nuss had limited control of his offense because of Saban, so I think him having full control over our offense might bring a different tempo/style than what we're used to seeing at Alabama.
Also, Borges was given pretty much full rein of the offense at Michigan. Hoke may have taken a little bit more control/guidance at the end, but he always gave Borges his "full trust" in how he ran the offense. I think this is why Nuss was so attracted to Michigan in the first place - He was going to get his shot at running things how he wants to run them.

So what you're saying is... Devin can't predict the future 100% accurately and that upsets you? This wasn't an "I promise I'll take out the garbage today" kind of guarantee.
Question... Would you rather have him say something to the effect of "I don't know what will happen but I will try to make sure we win" or would you rather have him show confidence and drive with a "guarantee" being that he has more control over the offensive performance than any other player on the field?
The thing about that "guarantee" with the win over OSU last year told me that this dude is going to do everything he can to win. You don't guarantee something will happen without doing your best to give it your all because you know the risks of what you're saying. Watching that game, I have no doubt in my mind Devin gave it his all. I honestly couldn't believe he was still going at the end of that game - It was a remarkable game for him.
Him making claims to push Hoke off the hot seat tells me that he is working really freaking hard to improve and make this offense the best it can be. Therefore, I LIKE.
