|1 day 4 hours ago||The problem with this||
The problem with this argument is that even if you are right, Hoke clearly was unprepared for practically every other game on the schedule. He was so "Ohio" focused that I am not surprised at all that the OSU game was their best prepared game. He probably worked on preparing his team for The Game all season at least in some fashion of the sense. Hoke was very clear on the importance of that game, so again, that wouldn't surprise me in the least.
Take out "The Game," however, and it was clear practically every other game that the staff was out coached and not prepared to face lesser opponents. Harbaugh this season beat every opponent he was supposed to beat; sometimes it got a little too close for comfort (Minnesota & Indiana), but he also destroyed teams that were expected to be close calls (BYU & Northwestern).
This is the main reason I don't think we should focus on The Game so much in regards to how much the team actually improved this season.
Injuries played a part in the loss, but OSU played determined and was also the more talented team. You're looking at a program that has been building top 3 recruiting classes with the same head coach for the last handful of years vs a coach who maximizes talent with the best of them with a team he just inherited; he was forced to bandage up as many weak spots as possible until he is able to get his own guys in to run his team and develop. The team will continue to improve, and talent will become more even (especially depth) as Jim brings in his guys.

Well.. If you want to be a jerk about it... Technically we competed for a playoff spot up to the final game and would have been that much closer if the Sparty crap wouldn't have happened; THIS ALL IN YEAR ONE OF HARBAUGH AFTER A FIVE WIN SEASON. Given that fact, I don't see why it would be such a far cry to assume Michigan will at the very least compete for a playoff spot next season as well, which also means they will be competing for the national championship game; one does not compete for the playoffs if one is not also competing for a national championship.
Doesn't mean we will win the national championship, but we will still be competing for that shot.
|1 day 15 hours ago||This 100%. The offenses||
This 100%. The offenses Michigan's D struggled to stop included two fast-paced spread teams and one passing attack in Minnesota that seemed mostly lucky then became confident. LSU has very minimal passing threat and runs a more pro-style run attack, which the defense has shut down all season. I am not saying that Fournette won't get his 100 yds, but I don't see the defense giving up 30 pts to that offense. Maybe 20 on a bad day.
The real question is whether or not Rudock will be available.

Couldn't agree more about the "McGary and Novak" thing. I do think he is currently a lesser developed Mitch McGary with his offensive skills and ability to play defense to the outside. He is going to only get better from here on out. You could see that potential early with a few little things he did right, but it really came out during the tournament. I really thought he would be the #2 center by the time the B10 season rolls around, but not to this extreme. Love that kid.

"I really am starting to hate them more than OSU."
I've been there for a couple years already.
|1 week 2 days ago||Not developing his best||
Not developing his best talent??? His "best talent" that he's recruited involves McGary (clear development freshman year while battling a back injury then hurt basically his entire sophomore season), Walton (battled with injuries his entire sophomore season), Irvin (clear development last year until once again injured this offseason), and Chatman (struggled instantly but started earning some playing time through development by the end of the season - jury still out on him this season but he's clearly better than last year especially defensively).
Injuries have prevented his best "star" guys from developing at the same pace. McGary was turning into a star, Irvin was clearly developing last year while becoming "the guy," and Walton still looks fantastic this season despite a couple games of shooting struggles. He would have been right there last year if not for his dang toe.
I seriously think you're off on this. Beilein has been unlucky with his stars getting injured the last two seasons, and that is why it looks the way you're seeing things.
|1 week 2 days ago||I really felt that way last||
I really felt that way last year when he played, but he looks more in control this year. The problem was that no one else could get it going. Dawkins couldn't hit anything and neither could Walton. Irvin looked better than the Elon game, but he is still not himself. Levert was hitting nearly everything for most of the game, and then he stopped hitting it when we needed his shot the most near the end of the game. We don't have a McGary or Morgan on our team to help the offensive game at this moment, so we have to rely on our shooters to score points. Levert was the one guy hitting his shot, so I don't blame him for taking as many shots as he did.
|1 week 2 days ago||What was Caris supposed to do||
What was Caris supposed to do besides score 29 points to "lead this team?" It's not his fault we lost this game. The only other player to look good offensively was Robinson, and then Xavier shut him out. Stauskas and Burke has a formidable center to help protect the rim and excel in the screen game. We don't lack the "guy," we lack a few other guys.
I fully believe that Wagner contains the ceiling for this team's success. He has the most "skill" as a big, but I don't think this is the year for him to go off just because he still needs more weight on him. He is most definitely going to improve, however, and I fully expect him to be at least the #2 big by the end of the season. We will need his offensive/defensive skills when it comes to tournament time if we are to go far. I'm excited for the kid. He just needs to continue soaking up what he's being taught.

I had fear at first, then I heard a stat (believe on WTKA) that there are only like four teams in the entire country that play fewer possessions on offense than Penn St. It all kind of clicked in my head after that.
We are not going to need the kind of defensive depth that we needed on Saturday; guys won't be gassed in the first quarter. This also means that Peppers won't need to take all of his 100 snaps on just defense, so it will be the perfect time to 3-way the heck out of him.
|1 week 5 days ago||Thankfully Michigan won't be||
Thankfully Michigan won't be competing against NBA teams. Robinson's role is not to be a freak athlete. Stauskas may have had a bit more "create your own shot"ness than Robinson, but this is also the first time we've seen him play. During the Elon game, you could tell he was confident shooting the ball. Confidence is important as anything when it comes to shooters.
He may not score 15+ pts per game on average, but he will be that guy you can rely on when you need a bump in scoring. We've seen those types all over the B1G. That short white Indiana kid comes to mind, but his name doesn't come to me. Robinson is TALL and a good shooter. He won't have to have that "athleticism" you're speaking of. He does, however, look more athletic than I thought he'd be.
|1 week 5 days ago||The key will be to how fast||
The key will be to how fast Moritz improves in my opinion. He's got the "intensity" and athleticism for being a big center type. Not McGary by any means, but he seems to have the ability to play defense closer to half court similar to McGary. Wilson is similar. I think as those two guys get more comfortable at that position, their progression will be the tale of how much potential this team has this season.
|1 week 5 days ago||100% agree on the three man||
100% agree on the three man center rotation. There will be three centers playing minutes each game. Seems to be Beilein's style (two with significant minutes and one with spot minutes).
|1 week 5 days ago||The truth of the matter is||
The truth of the matter is that we will need at least 3 bigs to contribute a decent amount of minutes, especailly the way they're calling fouls. Yes, Wilson can be one of those (and will be), but I really think that Wagner has the post potential on the defensive side of the ball. He seems to be a better natural rebounder/deflectioner of basketballs and has a lot more "intensity" than maybe any other Big on the team. Donnal may have the best offensive game of the bunch as far as outside shooting goes, but I could see him hitting the bench if his hustle and intensity don't increase.
Wagner is an improving player as is Wilson, and Donnal's been in the system for two full years and change now. We will see more improvement from both Wagner and Wilson as a % of overall talent compared to Donnal due to their lack of overall experience, and right now both of those guys seem to have a higher overall potential than Donnal. Because of that fact, I just really have a hard time seeing Donnal keeping his minutes over time. May resort to more of a Bielfeldt role (prior to RS Junior year) where he comes in when guys are in foul trouble or really struggling on the court.
Those are my thoughts at least.

They tried to slow down. It's hard to slow down when you allow them to get a 25 yd TD run or whatever that was. I honestly thought the game was over until we gave up the TD. We couldn't stop them, and they were about to run out the clock and kick at least a game winning FG.
Did anyone else feel more confident in a victory after allowing that long TD run or was I just being irrational? I saw Rudock throw all over that Indiana defense all game and also recalled the TD drive late in the Utah game. I did not lack confidence in our offense getting it done, but I did lack confidence in our defense to keep them from scoring an easy FG or TD to prevent the loss as Indiana was driving the ball that last drive.

I'm not an expert or anything, but he doesn't seem to have the "speed of the game" issue so much in that video that is usually the reason for a redshirt. I know there's a lot of talent on this team, but to say he's a lock for a redshirt would be incorrect thinking in my opinion.

The fact that he has a 6.5:1 TD:INT ratio makes me believe that his completion % is more indicative of the team around him rather than his ability to throw a pass accurately. Yes, you can always just throw the ball out of bounds every play and not throw an interception, but it's hard to put up 223 yds per game if that's your strategy.
I think our defense will give their offense fits, but our offensive is going to struggle against that D. Really going to have to pull out all the Harbaugh cards on offense and exploit their weaknesses to the max to put up some decent points.

I really think that Kam is either going to be a 20 minutes per game guy or a near bench lock. His talents, similarly in Rahk's situation, are different than any other player on the court. As you can see in that gif above, the guy has the ability to create his own shot and attack the rim at the 4 spot - This is what made him that near 5* player. "The light must go on," as they say. I'm really excited to see what he's capable of this season.
I won't be surprised, however, if guys like Rahk and Robinson take minutes away from him given their clear strengths that at times will be definite needs. Just depends on how far Kam progresses. Beilein isn't going to play 11 guys every game, so I think Kam probably needs to prove his strengths more than others at this point. His strengths do have a higher ceiling than both Rahk and Robinson, however.

It's a lot easier for a Michigan program to rediscover relevance thanks to its reputation and history than a Sparty program that has never really been known as a powerhouse program. I'm not saying they don't have a shot at staying relevant, but a Harbaugh led Michigan program will make it more difficult for them to hold their status. I won't be surprised if he does. The 4/5 spot may have a lot of depth, but those are the two spots that have more unproven depth. Doyle is pretty much the only guarantee minutes guy at those spots unless you count Irvin and Dawkins, who will more than likely play a lot of time at the four in smaller lineups.
I expect to see a lot more situational lineups dependent on the length of the opposing teams than in past years. I think Mo will be one of the main guys to benefit from those lineups.
I will not be surprised to see a much improved Chatman this year either, so that's not to say it won't be tough to find those minutes.

I agree with you there. The biggest problem I have is when those in authority (those responsible for the kids including coaches, administrators and advisors) turn their shoulders to certain activities from both a recruiting aspect and also a team aspect in order to preserve their "winning nature."
No win is greater than the well-being of a student athlete. How they handle these kids has a direct impact on the life that they will lead both while attending the university and afterwards. Taking the selfish perspective of "win at all costs" is what needs to get destroyed in this collegiate sports culture that we are surrounded in. And the NCAA needs to start figuring out how to do that because they are most definitely screwing the pooch on that one.

I'm saying this with a complete lack of judgment as I've learned that my mistakes are just as poorly made as anyone else's, so I hope that comes across here....
... That being said, "And I still turned out OK" does not condone an action. For one, some people don't turn out OK. For two, if things like this are always swept under the rug, it leaves opportunities out there like the Louisville situation.
I absolutely despise this side of high-end collegiate sports.

Technically, a successful punt more than likey ends the game whether or not someone was back to return the punt (even moreso with no one back). If you trust your defense, all you care about is that the opposing team doesn't have the opportunity to win it on a field goal. Going for it wouldn't have allowed for a FG opportunity, especially given their kicker situation. The "trust your defense" play is technically to go for it, and if they don't make the first down then oh well because "defense."

A lot of those missed calls were on the Michigan defense as they had either just stopped them on third or fourth down or were putting them in a tough third down situation, and most of those drives were ones that ended in points. The pick was a turnover, so that would have completely changed things too. It felt like a lot of points to me even live, but yes I agree that I didn't expect to see it turn out THAT bad upon deeper analysis.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||Dude, what's your problem?||
Dude, what's your problem? How in the world can you watch that game and not see LIVE that the refs played a major part in the outcome of this game? This article is all about proving/disproving the notion that the refs blew it, and the evidence shows that they obviously did (just worse than I thought which is insane).
The media was immediately talking about the targeting call, and Harbaugh even mentioned the missed calls in his presser without being questioned specifically on it, which I find very convincing since Harbaugh wouldn't normally play that card in a loss.
We were already debating the ref-job comparison between this game and the Louisville game, which is absolutely on a different level than most "ref-jobbed" games.
This still doesn't mean that the offense couldn't have done more to prevent the outcome, but my goodness man even one of these huge calls could have meant that difference. ONE. THERE WERE LIKE FOUR IF YOU EVEN TRIED TO IGNORE THE LESS OBVIOUS ONES.
Geez I was feeling not angry about everything until I read this.

And that could be. I know there were some really bad calls against Louisville though too. More than there were against MSU in this game. Overall officiating was terrible in that game on a play by play basis. The problem for me is that the MSU game had so many costly bad calls. Not really petty ones but ones that changed drives substantially. The Louisville game was obviously a bigger game, but I feel like if you took that out of the equation then the MSU calls had a more costly impact overall. That Trey foul was the worst though.

What I meant was I don't have the knowledge of those who listen to Sam Webb have... not that he's not worth listening to. I was making fun of my lack of recruiting wisdom. Guess I should neg myself too then.
I will say though that Falcon was probably Harbaugh's #1 RB in this class, so if for some reason that's a really bad thing then I definitely won't be surprised if he pushes for another one. Even more so if the ground game continues to get established; if I was a big burley man-child of a RB, Smith's last game against Oregon State would catch my interest for sure.
|10 weeks 5 days ago||I remember that quote as||
I remember that quote as well. What that tells me, however, is that he's going to get his shot at QB. Who knows if that's Harbaugh's #1 intended position for him, especially with a guy like Peters coming in the same class, but he will most definitely get his shot. Harbaugh loves competition.
|10 weeks 5 days ago||With Harbaugh, all things are||
With Harbaugh, all things are possible. I would guess that RB recruiting is done though, unless you hear chatter to the likes of what you mentioned... one guy projected to another position or Falcon's injury projected as long term.
One thing I am pretty sure about, however, is that Viramontes probably won't end up at RB at any point in his career. He very well may, because Harbaugh and all, but I could see him at another offensive position (H-Back/TE) over RB. Though I can't recall his height...
That's the take from a complete non-expert who doesn't listen to Sam Webb.

|11 weeks 17 hours ago||In all reality, this is doing||
In all reality, this is doing Shane a HUGE favor if he in fact gets that redshirt. He's not going to play this year except for meaningless snaps barring a Rudock injury; if he gets the redshirt, he still has two years to play college football. If he doesn't, he only has one.
Let's say Shane plans on transferring after this year; if he completes his degree, he can go ahead and leave with two years left of eligibility to play somewhere else; if he doesn't, he has a transfer year then can play somewhere else as a 5th year - NOT an option if he plays this year and doesn't acquire his degree.
If he sticks it out and competes for next year's spot (which I have little doubt that he will), he can compete next year and still have one year left to either play for Michigan or somewhere else as a grad transfer. If he wins the job at Michigan next season, that's two years of being a starter; if he loses the job, he has one year left with a grad year option to play immediately.
All that being said, if Shane wants his shot at playing as a starting college football quarterback, he really needs this redshirt. If he doesn't get it, coming back to Michigan next year may be a much tougher decision for him knowing that may be his last chance at playing football. I know he is a seriously strong competitor with a LOT of self confidence (which is fantastic), but that is an extremely difficult decision to make when you have a guy like O'Korn battling for next year's spot in your final year of eligibility. Maybe he gives it the spring to see how things are looking and makes a final decision from there. Either way, I really hope for this redshirt year for Shane, not even really for Michigan (although it benefits them too for sure), but I'm sure Shane would love to have that 5th year option.

THIS IS WHY WE DON'T WHINE TO MOMMA WHEN HARBAUGH SNAGS THE TWO STARS BECAUSE THEY WILL BE AWESOME!
|11 weeks 5 days ago||The thing is that there are||
The thing is that there are always more than one option for each kid. Just because they don't choose to come here doesn't mean they wouldn't want to be here if they were to choose UM.
Have you ever had to choose between two girls you liked because it was time to commit to one? They're both good options but ultimately you have to choose one, so you figure out which one you think is the best option and you go with it. I'm not saying we should be all butthurt over not being picked #1 and cry to Momma, but there's a reason Winston was in it this far with us - He really likes what UM has to offer. Maybe it's best we move on now, but you have to live with it knowing that you didn't give the kid the full chance to commit when he was ready to.
And the girl analogy works perfectly because there never is just one. No matter how long you go between girls, two will always show up once one surfaces.
