|5 days 17 hours ago||I personally feel that if||
I personally feel that if anyone has an opinion to make on a player on the board (who isn't paid to contribute) it's probably you mostly because you are a professional evaluator. It's just this attitude on these guys is way too pessimistic in general, and too many assumptions are made off of a star rating. In general I agree with what the ranking systems are for and I'd be an idiot if I said I wouldn't be more excited about a five/four star guy with a buttload of offers over a sleeper that came from nowhere; however, we need to trust Harbaigh on the guys we are recruiting a LITTLE BIT more than we are as a whole at the moment.
|6 days 1 hour ago||Sometimes it feels as if we||
Sometimes it feels as if we believe Harbaugh is a terrible evaluator solely because the guys he picks up are either ranked as a generic two star or unranked. Seriously? One of the guys gets bumped to a three star and we have to assume he isn't even that quality of a recruit? You guys need to start taking anti-depressants or something.

You wouldn't be referring to Jabrill Peppers now would you?
I think there was some hints that at least he was going to get some exposure to the offense, and potentially make a "surprise" showing in the Spring game, but that obviously never happened.
Based off of the conclusion from this discussion alone, I would be shocked if he didn't get AT LEAST a few reps a game in the offense. Harbaugh is known to not shy away from letting guys play on both sides of the ball, and this is probably the biggest weapon he's ever had with those capabilites. Personally, I believe if you throw Peppers on the offense a decent amount, you can make a capable offense very explosive and exciting in a hurry.

Good luck to him and everything, but he made the announcement about the announcement prior to him "deciding" to go to Alabama if his father is correct based off that quote. Just makes no sense to me. These are the kind of things that might happen when you are forced to make a decision because it's time sensitive, not something you do seven months prior to your deadline.
Color me skeptical, but again, good luck to him whatever he does.

|1 week 5 days ago||There are a few record labels||
There are a few record labels where I tend to like most of the artists signed by them. One of them in particular releases full album playlists for much of the music produced under their label on YouTube, and I have found and purchased a lot of good music because of the free resource that was provided for my use. This would be an effective way for small bands to get their music out there and in turn bring additional profits by being more exposed. YouTube is not the end all be all for me for music, so obviously I still am in need of another outlet to listen to their music via other devices. Because of this, I am more likely to purchase their music.
Smaller bands and artists that don't get the radio play need a way for listeners to find them, and there are plenty of "free" tools out there to do that. When you go and rip their music for free, yes you may end up going to a concert some day or buy a shirt another, but you no longer need another means of listening which would reinforce spending money to support them since you already have a physical copy. So while ripping music may in fact help bring money into artists pockets by allowing them to gain more of a following and such, they still have that opportunity with all these other free media outlets available online that don't provide you with an actual physical/digital copy of their music. It would benefit them more if they were discovered using those outlets rather than just having their music "ripped" because there's still the need of purchase.

But these once again are all FINAL RANKINGS. Half of the "two stars" Harbaugh has picked up lately haven't even been partially evaluated. If you recall, Canteen and Brandon Watson had similar rankings a couple years back until they were finally evaluated later on. Canteen turned out to be a solid four star composite and Watson a high three star composite. Wait until these guys get fully evaluated before you crash all over Harbaugh's recruiting strategy.
And while I understand that you used the appropriate tools to validate an argument and were a lot less distasteful and much more subtle about it, this collection of thoughts needs to be put aside for down the road as a whole. Way too many people up in arms about the whole thing right now.

I thought the common thread with these guys is that they are smart AND athletic.
This kinda crap gets said after every three star or lower commits to any major UM sport. Have we not leaned to shut our traps until we see how things trend? These guys will all get heavily scouted now that they've committed to the most talked about coach in the sport. There is no doubt in my mind that there will be a few four stars out of these guys Harbaugh is pulling in from these camps as underrated recruits.
We all love the starz; we all understand where you are coming from. Any of us who are saying you unbelievers need to shut it, we aren't saying that starz/more skilled players don't matter. We are just saying that before you believe he's recruiting a MAC team, wait for the final rankings to come out once the class is full and signed. Watch some of these guys get the bumps they are going to get, and then you will all be at much greater ease.

Cousins was not a bad college quarterback. That is the only statement I'm trying to make. If he was bad, he wouldn't have NFL starts to his name THREE YEARS INTO HIS PRO CAREER even if there wasn't much ahead/behind him. Bad quarterbacks also don't get drafted in the fourth round.
I'm done talking now. Neg away/Harbaugh.

My point was that he's in the NFL and is actually playing snaps. There were a few times even I thought of picking him up off waivers for my fantasy team because he was putting up pretty decent numbers while he was starting. If he wasn't a good quarterback, he wouldn't be in the NFL at all. Plenty of good college quarterbacks don't make it/transition to the NFL. He's no worse than Chad Henne at this point, and I don't think we would say that Chad Henne was a bad college quarterback. I just feel that sometimes our homerism gets the best of us at times.

One and dones are still going to be one and dones, but more than likely overseas. I'm not sure why a kid would go to school for a semester just to jump right to the NBA, but there probably would be one or two - It is more likely they just train for a year instead.
THEN there will be a buttload of kids that only play one year instead of two or two years instead of three. I'm not sure how that does anything but seriously damage the athletic programs, even if the focus is meant to be on education first.
FINALLY, it has been said all over within these discussions that the freshmen would still be participating in practices and scrimmages and more than likely attend games. The NCAA would essentially have to ban all "redshirted" players from attending certain meetings/practices or limit their time schedules dedicated to their athletic progression in order to get some sort of academic benefit out of this. And if they do that, how does that help the kid out if his goal is to play in the NBA? You're limiting the "athlete's" progression and in turn hurting their futures as NBA prospects. This MAY even deter some of them from attending school and push them towards a short-term international career before shooting for the NBA as well; I'm not sure how this helps these kids academically.
The kids that want to be in school will be in school, so they don't need a redshirt year if they have the ability to play and still plan to focus on their academics - Not only will you be hurting these kids but the athletic programs that are in need of immediate help.
More than likely if the NCAA opens this back up, you will probably see the NBA react within a year or two by allowing players to play right out of high school (ala MLB), which will be silmilar to back in the Kobe/Lebron days where there was a flood of kids headed for the NBA before attending a college course. INSTEAD, the flood will be even greater and create an even larger issue because of the "redshirt" year requirement.
These are my thoughts at least.

|9 weeks 3 days ago||It's not difficult at all for||
It's not difficult at all for most of us, but for some of us it's not quite so simple. It's easy to think logically in your own mind, but for some logic is misconstrued and addictions and psychological differences make it difficult for them to make positive life choices on a consistent basis. You do realize that ONE poor decision resulted in these consequences. One bad day. One terrible decision. There may have been another incident in the past, but this is the choice that resulted in him being dismissed.
I may not struggle with a violent past where it is difficult to control my "violent" behaviors, but I do have my own daily battles because of both my encounters and poor past decisions. It doesn't matter what society perceives those battles as in comparison to others struggles, it is still a psychological battle to deal with those struggles and not falter. I imagine it is the same for most of us - we have our evils and things we try to improve upon ourselves every day.
Last thing I will say is that the best thing you can do when you do make those big mistakes is not only learn from them but teach others about how to avoid those situations and how to be more aware of those things - if you help prevent one person from making those same mistakes, then you have turned a negative into a positive. I am glad to see that Frank Clark has started this process.
End of book.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||The only reason I think we||
The only reason I think we wouldn't be is because of last years cluster. Analysts in general don't pay a whole lot of attention to the "injury bugs" and probably would assume a normal projection due to gained experience. I think we will be at the bottom of the top 25 without him and around 10-15 with him in the fold, but my guess is with the lineup that will be put on the floor with him (and a bit of an unknown in Wagner) that we will probably surprise most people.
I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with you, but I fully expect this team to be on some analysts final four boards at the end of the season. Again, this is WITH Brown. However, I still think we could breach that status with Williams instead of Brown. I'm going to be super pumped about that kid as well if we snag him instead of Brown. Elite shooter = Beilein magic.

Holy insane depth, Batman. First ever for Beilein at Michigan? Yes, believe so. Even in our most recent great years, our good depth was 7/8 strong.. so this heavily trumps that.
I really wouldn't be surprised to see some early entry NBA guys next year from this lineup... Potential for Levert, Irvin and Walton. If Irvin plays like he has the last few weeks all season long, there will be some definite chatter with him. Walton was on the board before he got hurt and his play suffered from it. And Dawkins, man... I'm not going to say it wont happen.
|16 weeks 1 hour ago||Sometimes I wonder how many||
Sometimes I wonder how many of us on this board, especially those that tend to be more critical of others and their mistakes, have littered themselves with poor decisions that they try to hide (expecially from themselves).
The truth of the matter is that there isn't one individual on this planet that hasn't made a regrettable mistake in their lives and hasn't faced adversity. David Harrison is doing everything he can to provide for his family and survive, and props to him for learning from his mistakes and trying to better himself with the situation he's currently in. It's easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves and sulk in our adversity and get nowhere. This man is facing it and trying to figure out how he can overcome it in order to support those he's responsible for.
In no way is this funny. From someone who has learned from his own past mistakes and thankfully been able to learn from them and in turn been blessed from that wisdom, I seriously hope David figures out how to turn that intelligence of his into something that will help bring him the success and fulfillment he desires. He has obviously matured, and because of that he deserves a shot at fulfillment.
|16 weeks 1 hour ago||Walton > Spike... when||
Walton > Spike... when healthy. Even when he's not, he still showcases skills that Spike just doesn't have. Spike is a better pure point guard, but we have also learned that Beilein's teams thrive with a skilled athletic point guard.
I guess the better way of putting it is that in no way should Spike ever supplant Walton as the starter where Walton is forced to sit on the bench. He was incredible as a developing freshman, and he has the potential to be an NBA draft pick if he's allowed to showcase that development when healthy next year. He was a projected pick this past year until he got hurt, and this is a guy that should only help is status with another year.
Walton is going to be phenomenal for us next year, and I can't wait to see the development of this team with a healthy Walton and potential Levert return, not to mention Duncan Robinson and the possibility of getting this overseas kid. We seriously have a chance to be an incredibily special team again next year.
And with the projection that Dawkins is currently on, I would not be surprised to see him blow up next year. Like gone to NBA ala Burke/Stauskas blow up.
This year's team is fun to watch, but next year's has the potential to be extremely fun.

I see what you're saying, and I agree with a lot of it. However, there are still a lot of kids that want to make their college choice prior to their senior year, and that number seems to continually grow year after year. Some schools just have to be crossed off the list because of the fact that they can't afford to visit (especially with family).
I think that the kids who want to see that gameday atmosphere and make those late decisions are still going to do that whether or not they have the opportunity to check out the campus on an official before their senior season. I don't think the timelines for a decision of many recruits will actually change much with earlier official visits, but it will give recruits and their families who want to make those earlier decisions a real good look at the schools they are truly interested in no matter the required distance traveled. Some families have the money to do those things on their own, and some don't.

I'm sorry, but Frank Clark was much better than an "above average athlete." I had no doubts about him getting drafted until that incident. He seemed to me to be another player that underperformed his skills, much like Funchess.
I wouldn't have been surprised to see him snagged in the third round prior to what happened, and I fully expect him still to be grabbed by someone, undrafted or not, and make an NFL roster if he can stay out of trouble. Not just make the roster, but play some significant minutes in his career. He has plenty of "can't teach" immeasureables that will do him a lot of good with proper discipline and coaching.
|19 weeks 2 hours ago||All I know is there's a lot||
All I know is there's a lot "ifs" with this current team. I do think we are close to turning the corner, but a lot if development needs to be made with a lot of players in order for this team to play for the B1G title next year (with or without Caris). The one thing we know for sure is that a healthy Walton Jr will be am excellent improvement at the PG position, but I think that's the only for sure expectation as far as improvement goes. I do think MAAR and Dawkins will make that leap forward and turn into excellent players, but I'm really curious to see how Chapman and DJ Wilson look next year. I think Chapman will be better than most expect, but Wilson is a complete unknown with him barely playing this year - it may have hurt his projected development.
Either way, I think next year will be a fun and exciting team to watch again. I don't expect to pick up any high level recruits being that it looks like we may get one with few options; therefore, I don't expect any real new faces that could instantly impact the team in a positive way. Duncan Robinson should provide excellent shooting, but his complete impact is entirely unknown as well.
All that being said, definite improvement next year, but the extent is extremely up in the air. Player development may have never been more inportant given our current youth.

McGary will play both the 4 and 5. They lost Perkins, so it won't take too much away from him. He's already shown his skills in OKC so they'll find some time for him. Next season will be very interesting. He will probably take more from Collison as he moves toward old man status.

Plus, these guys have a history with each other while he coached the Niners - They know each other. If you listened, even his wife addressed Tim as if she's cooked a meal for him in the past.
...Now that I think about it, this may actually be more about helping Tim get his Podcasts a good headstart (this is the first one he's done) than actually all about Jim himself.
Either way, Harbaugh.

|21 weeks 20 hours ago||I'm not here condoning his||
I'm not here condoning his actions or saying the girl deserved it, but as a poster above stated, the girl was out of sorts and approached Mixon looking for an altercation (I believe she was drunk). It is known that she had a history of legal issues, so I say this with the understanding that she was not an innocent party in this incident.
I will reiterate from my post above that Mixon was known to have a good background with no prior incidents in his childhood, so this was very out of sorts for him. Again, there is never an excuse to hit a female, especially in the manner that was done in this case, but I fully understand this as something to not expect in the future with him. This isn't a Ray Rice issue where the footage showed the actions of a completely cold-blooded male - there were faults in both parties, and the end result was Mixon going out of control with how he reacted to the female's actions. His suspension and jail time was understood and deserved, but I fully expect him to learn from this situation as everything I read claims him to be a stand out individual with good morality.
|21 weeks 22 hours ago||Going to be honest with you||
Going to be honest with you guys here... I don't think the mindset with Mixon is similar to that of other guys who have been involved with domestic violence. I live in OKC and I've read most of the articles and heard a lot of perceptions of this situation. I think OU fans are still excited about this kid, and the knowledge of him is that this incident was completely out of the norm for the kid and is not quite so cut and dry as "punch girl in face" sounds. The OK media all got to see the footage of the incident, and it was basically what they expected they would see.
There was an article in the Oklahoman this morning with quotes from Stoops about how exited they are to have him back and how good of a kid he is. He does not have a bad background at all, and I will honestly be more shocked if we hear about another negative incident from him (especially to this severity) than if we don't. I completely dislike OU, but I am definitely open to seeing this kid have another chance. One incident should not be the end of a players career.

Half agree half not. The part I don't agree to is that Harbaughs staff was on the "loser" end of the recruiting gig. I do think there's a bit if an ego issue with the standard mgoblogger's perspective regarding certain media outlets, and while opinions are voiced quite strongly on this one as well, I definitely think Harbaugh's staff did a great job flipping some guys we had (probably) never even heard of prior to a few weeks ago. We lost out on some guys, but that has to be expected with a minimal timeframe to recruit with a new staff (even with Harbaugh's reputation).
OTHER THAN THAT... I hear you, man.

See also: Mitch McGary...? Oh wait, he actually figured it out... I know both Donnal and Chatman have only three years of eligibility left and everything, but I think they still have a chance at becoming good if not great players. Beilein has a knack for helping players continually improve. Plus the fact that Chatman started at the beginning of the year kind of gives me the idea that maybe he was showing something prior to the beginning of the season that isn't what we are seeing now. Wait to see what these guys look like next year before you think that Beilein screwed up on those two guys.

Do you seriously think Alabama doesn't redshirt any of their players? A team like Alabama who not only recruits well but also develops well should have very few freshmen play in a given year because their depth chart is stacked with talented guys who have been developed. You are wasting years of players' eligibility (and player development) by burning through redshirts just because "it's not what elite programs do."
So much wrong with this one.

I'm pretty sure the majority of the fan base, especially those who paid attention to recruiting, had a difficult time not seeing a future filled with success after that BCS win. I think that was a fair assessment given the success he had in his first year at UM. That's what fan bases do; success results in more success, and failure results in more failure. We live by the day way above what reality tells us where nothing is guaranteed. That's one reason there's so much emotion put into each win and loss by fans.

The mgoboard has been making this loss worse for me. I'd rather move on, but the depressing "I give up" atmosphere here since the end of the game is just plain awful. Thankfully you're all not running the program or this season would be a complete tire fire. Way too reactionary.
I hate losing just like the rest of you, especially the way the game ended, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this team will perform under adversity with a fanbase screaming for their coaches heads. At least you know the players love this coaching staff, so I hope this will motivate them to work even harder and beat the piss out of the B10. I'm going to support this team AND coaching staff until the end - Give Nuss time to work on this o-line before you crucify him as well.
On a side note, I actually saw some improvements in our running game. We all knew the O-Line would be a work-in-progress with improvements over the course of the year. Hopefully they improve enough by the time the MSU game comes around.
Looking forward to Saturday's game.
