|2 weeks 5 days ago||This is what I was thinking||
This is what I was thinking as well. Take advantage of the Speight injury and throw out some new wrinkles against OSU that they could not prepare for. Shouldn't need much as far as an innovative offense goes against Indiana being that it's at home. I'm not saying to not prepare for Indiana, but make it a bit simpler for O'Korn and take advantage of the run game a bit more with Evans. I still think Peppers will be used quite a bit as they are not going to try and allow the game to be close, but save the innovative stuff/new offensive wrinkles for OSU.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Peppers is going to be in||
Peppers is going to be in offense a TON against OSU. He was last year, and he will be used even more extensively this year. I am really excited to see what Harbaugh does in that game with Peppers. With as much as he will be used that game, and with as many eyes that are going to be watching, there is a chance he actually makes it in the conversation for that top Heisman spot if all goes well and he makes a few outstanding plays on both ends. I know we are more concerned about beating OSU than Peppers Heisman talk right now, and rightfully so, but I think both of those things go hand and hand. And, after all, this is a discussion about Peppers.
There is going to be just as much hype going into The Game as long as we beat Indiana and OSU takes care of Sparty. Going to be a really exciting game, and Peppers will be a big part of that. Maybe that same play where they roll-out Speight will be run with O'Korn, and maybe this time they actually use O'Korn's athleticism to throw off OSU on that play and go for a big play. I'm optimistic that Harbaugh will do some fun stuff with O'Korn's athleticism.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Hopefully, but no matter what||
Hopefully, but no matter what Speight was our best option at making the playoffs. Speight had an off game.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||I think the biggest impact||
I think the biggest impact this game has on our playoff run is that we no longer have a potential loss on the cards that would still keep us in. There was still a shot that we could lose to either OSU or the B1G championship game and still get in, but that's no longer a possibility.
Win out. That is all. And for you doubters to judge this team's potential based off of one game is plain ridiculous. How can we absolutely destroy a team that beat OSU but not have the talent to defeat OSU justhe because we played in the cursed Kinnick Stadium and lost?
This is college football guys. Great teams lose to teams they should destroy every year. Next week and the week is a true test - how do you respond in defeat? I have a hard time not seeing a Harbaugh led team respond well.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||I agree with you on the elite||
I agree with you on the elite 8. That would technically mean you expect to be a #2 seed, which is very difficult coming off a last-four-in seed.
That being said, I think a lot of people expect Michigan to struggle to make the tournament this year again which I don't believe is reasonable. A lot of bad things would have to happen to struggle that much.
The one position that has struggled the most and has received the most flack is the Center position. Mo Wagner will be a huge improvement over anything that position had even in its best moments the last two season. With the Center position a fairly significant improvement and the expectation that every other position reaches at least slight improvement due to all the starters coming back (year to year progression, which is highly normal and expected), this should be a fairly good team that has the potential to make a splash in the tournament.
My expectation is a sweet 16 caliber seed (4 or 5 seed) with the potential to at least make it to the elite 8. I don't know how you can expect the elite 8, but there should be potential if the team stays healthy.
That being said, Dakich is high.

Thanks. Yeah, I probably should have been a little clearer in my initial post. The exact quote with my interpretation on the initial post would have eliminated the Bolivia threat at least (probably). I was anticipating another worthy thread based off what he said yesterday with similar assumptions.
By the way, I don't intend to do a daily recap of all his recruiting roundups. They've just been very thread worthy lately. Probably going to be a lot more thread worthy roundups in the future with the recruiting cycle only 2.5 months from completion.

If you listen to the podcast, you will see that I worded it just as he said it. His "gut" just means "I have received major insider info from deep within the program that I trust with all certainty." He also had a "gut feeling" this summer that Rashan Gary was projected as a starter - it doesn't even have to have anything to do with recruiting.

Iowa recruits never get much look. He was a bit of an unknown until his Opening performance. All the Michigan recruits were clamoring for the coaches to offer him. Michigan State and Notre Dame wanted him bad. I think his offers have more to do with the fact that he's from Iowa and not that he's not a top level recruit.
I'm not saying he should ever be a take over a guy like Nico Collins or DPJ, but he is a completely different style of receiver. A more talented and athletic Grant Perry. I'd take that any day, regardless of how stacked our WR coup is between last year and this year's potential class.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Sam apparently is going to||
Sam apparently is going to talk extensively about Ambry Thomas tomorrow. Sam expects that he will sign with Michigan in the end. I wouldn't get worried about him yet despite the MSU chatter. He's compared this recruitment to Lavert Hill numerous times. Whether or not he has a brother playing for Michigan, he DOES have a lot of close friends that are both on the team and will be in this year's class. No reason to worry yet.
Also, Ambry Thomas will play as a freshman for Michigan. Michigan is losing a lot of guys as well. Early playing time is not just a feather in MSU's hat.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||I definitely think they would||
I definitely think they would take him, but he would have to replace one of the other LB's on their board. Main reason I believe he wasn't mentioned was that he's not expected to choose Michigan. The three mentioned in my post all have Michigan as their projected leader.
I'll say that a couple weeks ago Baron Browning had a greater expected chance to be in the class than Aubrey Solomon (although still not that good of one), so you never know. He needs to make it to campus.

Sam Webb stated that it was clear that Becton was higher on Michigan's board than some of Scout's 4* rated linemen that are on Michigan's board, although that may have again been a reference to mostly Aaron Banks. He didn't go into any specifics with that comment, but it seemed as if he was purposefully leaving out names. His main point tho is that Michigan does not at all see the kid as a 3* or generic 4* recruit.

It's PTSD dude. Those are the symptoms. Now that you know, you can slap yourself in the face whenever you feel nervous of Sparty. That's what Little Brother is supposed to feel like before he HAS to face off with Big Brother.
Little Brother is just a big bag of chips that are incredibly stale and crunchy. Put that PTSD aside and realize that Little Brother is about to get laid out. If Harbaugh gets the chance, he's going to put up 80 on them and put them back in their place.
We should never be afraid of Little Brother. Not last year not the year before and definitely not this year.

Just remember guys. We should never be afraid of Little Brother. My little brother is now 29 and weighs 40 pounds more than I do, but I was never afraid of him before and I never will from here on out. They may win one or have a little streak of their own, but that doesn't change the fact that they're still Little Brother.
LITTLE BROTHER WILL ALWAYS BE LITTLE BROTHER. STOP BEING NERVOUS ABOUT YOUR LITTLE BROTHER. Sparty is absolutely terrified of Saturday as they should be. Scared to wear their Sparty green because they are horrified of what is to come. Too scares to be noticed. Jabrill Peppers is going to puncture some Sparty wounds and make them bleed. MO is going to eat Sparty for breakfast, second breakfast, lunch and dinner and be rubbin that belly all day long - He be eatin GOOD on Saturday.
Little Brother will be remembered once again as Little Brother after Saturday. It will he a good day.

My guess is 3 unless guys like Browning or Darnay Holmes make it in. I think most of the guys that will commit have been on the radar at the very least. Only a few were complete unknowns at the end of last cycle (Eubanks and Asiasi are the two I can think of). McDoom was sort of out of nowhere but the staff had been pushing for him since before his senior season had even started, so he was a known commodity.
That being said, McDoom wouldn't have been on last year's list since he was committed to Oregon, but a bunch of the late commits like Rashan Gary, David Long, Lavert Hill, Kareem Walker etc would have been on the list. I'm sticking with three.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Then you haven't been paying||
Then you haven't been paying that much attention. He wasn't "all Sparty" four weeks ago when MSU still wasn't a known terrible team. 4 losses later, I think it's pretty much been confirmed that Thomas isn't necessarily impressed by that... Sam Webb mentioned the other day that it's only helped Michigan's case - The early playing time card isn't exactly working for them with all these losses.

Fortunately for us, Tufele isn't a long shot...
|5 weeks 4 days ago||I don't think a lot||
I don't think a lot different, but it will look a little different. Too many of the guys listed either have Michigan at the top or right near the top. I think maybe three commitments will take place outside the recruits listed above out of possibly 12-14 total additional commitments. Around 20-25% or so. Just too many recruits that we seem to be in excellent shape for. Recruiting is going really well right now.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||The only thing that surprises||
The only thing that surprises me about the commitment is that I had an assumption that Jeter took his spot based off the number of DL recruits already committed and the fact that Tufele definitely has a spot still. No clue how the heck we will get all these other dudes in this class.
This is going to be an insane end to the 2017 recruiting cycle. Should be a fun ride, folks!

Funny thing is that four wouldn't even be a big shock. We are in the mix for at least six or seven. If you count those who are not 5*'s to at least one site, the list gets even bigger. And who knows what will happen if we end up beating OSU. Don't want to get too excited about that until I see it happen though.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||Since recruiting became a big||
Since recruiting became a big media thing, we have rarely passed OSU on the recruiting trail and have lost practically every game. Bo recruited well and the 90's were loaded with top recruits - just didn't have a lot of media coverage about it.
I say all this to disagree with you - at least I think I am. While recruiting hasn't been the biggest factor in why we have struggled to beat OSU, you can't make the argument that it hasn't had an impact either. I also don't think we need to beat OSU's ranking every year or even necessarily at all, but we do need to keep that top 5 range as long as Meyer is their head coach.
Also that being said,
|6 weeks 3 days ago||While definitely possible,||
While definitely possible, I'm not sure you can take one half season at Oregon to determine he was a terrible coach altogether and had nothing to do with our defensive success either. His position group was pretty dang good when he was a defensive coach in the 90's for Michigan. Oregon was a tire fire defense waiting to happen. He is forced to go with guys that he most likely never would have recruited and most likely aren't fit to play the defense he wants to run.
He's a good defensive coach. Oregon might just not be the right fit regardless as spread offenses were never his forte, but yeah. I rest my case.
Mattison is still awesome regardless. Hope he stays at least a few more years.

I think Onwenu is destined for d-line next year. Maybe some snaps in six-man o-line fronts, but more defensive linemen play in the course of one game. More depth is needed there
|6 weeks 4 days ago||Is there a stat out there||
Is there a stat out there that tracks defensive turnovers per play or per X amount of plays? When your defense is allowing so few plays per possession and your offense is pushing so many plays per possession, it's really difficult to have a strong turnover ratio with so many fewer opportunities.
If there is such a stat out there, I feel like that would be a better barometer for determining turnover rankings than the ratio itself. And maybe that's what the turnover rank is doing, but that's not my understanding.

Sam Webb is adament that if Najee commits to any other school that it would be Michigan at this point. He doesn't expect a decommitment, but Michigan has the biggest chance of flipping him. I think Najee really likes Michigan from the sound of everything.
|7 weeks 19 hours ago||I haven't really watched||
I haven't really watched Alabama a ton, so I'd have a hard time arguing that. While Rashan Gary has been as good as could be expected given our d-line depth, he isn't seeing a TON of snaps either. Alabama has had a great d-line with depth for years as well, so my guess is that they're both in a similar position. I would expect, however, that Gary will be the better player with a better NFL career projection. Too hard to seriously call for sure though.

Well they sucked at running the ball too, so that didn't help any.
How many throws would Hornibrook have made that he didn't if he was healthy? I don't remember seeing a lot of open receivers that he missed. There may have been one in all honesty that I can remember. Heck, maybe him being "hurt" actually helped him complete that one pretty ball he threw for a touchdown - his trajectory could have been off if healthy.
Or were there open receivers on that play where he wasted those five seconds crawling into the fetal position while being fearful of getting further injured? That's the only play where I can distinctly remember being "injured" may have had an effect on his game.

Mattison was a big part of that as well, but that was a great recruiting team.
|7 weeks 1 day ago||Mike Weber was 100% going to||
Mike Weber was 100% going to sign his letter of intent to Michigan until Harbaugh got Karan Higdon to sign first. They still wanted Weber, but they never told him they were going after another running back. Weber was taken aback by the random signing and went with his #2 option instead. That one was actually on Harbaugh.
Weber was torn between OSU and Michigan before the Higdon signing, so it's understandable that he went with OSU after the surprise. This all happened on signing day too. That's probably the biggest reason why the Weber family was so pissed about OSU's coach leaving because both of his options sort of pulled one from under him.
This is Sam Webb confirmed.

Dawkins took a huge hit last year, especially coming off the bench. I have no idea what happened to him last year, but I seriously thought he was on the verge of blowing up after the 2014-15 season and become the next Caris LaVert type prospect (maybe not in style of play but in how he was a low-level recruit and turned into a high-level draft pick). Kid was playing so well at the end of his freshman year. Sophomore season was a huge disappointment. I know he's gone now, but I think his regression or lack of progression was very indicative of last year's overall disappoinments.

Basketball conversations are becoming borderline political nowadays (borderline lock-worthy). That being said, I like the starting five quite a lot if that involves Wagner.
Also, it would be nice if the Michigan community went out to support its team regardless of expectations or the record. I don't know how we expect all these 5* recruits to start showing up if we are filling the arena close to a Rutgers level of support. I understand Michigan is a football school, but it is clear fans expect Michigan to be at a Kansas or Duke level of basketball program yet we don't show up to support our team like a Kansas or Duke or Indiana level program when they're struggling (as far as attendance goes). Just thought I'd add that.
Excited for the season to start!

I say that because while I expect that the defense will take a hit (there's no way it won't), I still believe there is excellent potential for a top 10 defense next year. You don't need draft picks at every position to be a great defense, especially in Don Brown's system. I don't know, man. Who really knows. The WR position next season will be completely up for grabs (although I'm sure Perry will be tough to beat out and don't expect him to be), and it should be a fun battle. Good conversation.
|8 weeks 3 days ago||Our best players were injured||
Our best players were injured the last two years. Who knows what could have been last year with a healthy Lavert (or the year before for that matter). Doesn't fix the center position, but maybe this is the year they surprise some people again. Just give the new staff a shot at making the changes needed to turn this thing around.
This is a senior led team, which is known to have a significant impact on college basketball success. I'm just not giving up hope for a successful season before it even starts.
|8 weeks 3 days ago||I don't know.. he still will||
I don't know.. he still will be a freshman receiver, which is a tough position for a freshman to start (especially day 1).
I honestly won't be surprised to see Ways starting next season. He was hyped prior to his injury in the spring. Also, McDoom has been seeing more reps because there's not another guy really like him on the team. Harbaugh is trying to use his speed to get out on the edge. Ways isnt that kind of player and therefore wouldn't get those snaps regardless.
I do think McDoom has a high chance of starting, but I believe it would be opposite Ways.

|8 weeks 4 days ago||The "same product" includes a||
The "same product" includes a non-17 Sophomore Mo Wagner, who looks like he has NBA potential (that was the word before he arrived on campus as well). Center was by far the weakest position last year, and combine that with a legit back-up PG, the "same product" will be better barring health. How much better is what I'm curious about.
I completely understand why a ton of fans are pissed about the basketball team. I get it. But Irvin will be closer to himself after his back injury, and I'm really pumped about Mo. Maybe this team is no better than a 6 seed, but it will still be a fun team to watch in my opinion.
If your demands are "champinship or bust" this season, then yes there is a high likelihood of disappointment. I think we just need to see what this team is capable of and go from there. I expect to be better. Show me some defensive improvement with the new staff. Show me better production out of the Center position. Act like you can play ball with the big boys, especially on defense. That's what I want to see. Right now I'd be happy with that six-seed. I just want to see improvement, which I have a hard time not believing there will be.

Gotcha. Recruiting is weird, so there's no telling which side is the one to pay attention to the most. Sam Webb sounded a little excited yesterday, however, so I'm sure he heard some decent news at worst.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||His point is that it would be||
His point is that it would be stupid to think this team isn't a tournament team and won't be better than last season. Remember Burke's first year we lost the opening round as a 4 seed, so the fact that we pulled off a near nail-biter with Tulsa is still better than that opening round game. AND we nearly beat a very good Notre Dame team (and should have won). So you can see it from both perspectives.
Last year was a failure compared to expectations, but there were still good moments last season. There should be MORE good moments this season at the very least with all five starters back and the one major promising player in Mo being much more improved now that he's broken the age of 17. Mo was exciting to watch last season, and we should be seeing much more of that.
I'm not sure we can face another injury bug this season, however. Injuries will seriously damage this team's success. Have to hope for a good healthy season.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||This is an honest and very||
This is an honest and very good perspective. I have a hard time not seeing this team make the tournament this year mostly because we do return every starter and have the X factor as an additional PG. Even if there are some rough spots this season, we should also expect to see some entertaining success that gives us some more hope.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||The thing that bothers me||
The thing that bothers me with Irvin and Walton is that both players at one point in their careers were much better at certain things than they were last season.
Beilein even said before the season last year that Irvin wouldn't be back to normal until this season because of how much he lost from his back injury. I really think that halted his progression, and he was clearly a better shooter his freshman year. Showed some additional promise as "the guy" his sophomore year as the Big 10 Season went along.
Walton even more so I just don't get. The guy showed HUGE potential his freshman year and was extremely good driving the ball to the rim, making some big Burkesque shots, and was at the same time a terrific shooter. His shot came back last year, but I really think his injury to his toe really hampered his progression as well.
Do I expect either of these guys to all of a sudden play a huge step up from last season? No, I do not. But I also can't deny that there's potential for both to show huge improvements. Irvin moreso from an athleticism standpoint and getting his 3pt shot better, and Walton around the rim.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Who is "most?" I guess we'll||
Who is "most?"
I guess we'll see on how good he really is over time, but the last time I remember people making statements about a Michigan player's skill level before he even had a chance to complete fall practice, Spike scored 17 points in one half of the national championship game in his freshman year and ended up being a fan favorite throughout his career. Sometimes we just need to be a bit more careful about how we assess a player's skill level based off of recruiting rankings and "experts" opinions, especially before the kid has a chance to even prove himself.
If you've seen him play in person, you can add that bit of information, otherwise I suggest pulling back on making statements of fact like that based off a perception that was gained through people writing stuff about his high school game.

I'm just glad our competion outside MSU, Iowa and OSU is looking better. Although Iowa and MSU are looking much worse. Whatever, I'm fine with that.
This game against Wisconsin at home is huge. Colorado is now looking like a pretty great non-conference game.
I really don't think this early season could have worked out much better for Michigan's chances of making the playoffs. At first I was skeptical if a 1-loss Michigan team with only three tough games could make it. Now, however, I'm pretty sure they could and will due to other teams on the schedule stepping it up. Need to win the B1G championship, but it IS looking a lot better than pre-season.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||FYI, I'm pretty sure Sam Webb||
FYI, I'm pretty sure Sam Webb snuck in an offhand "gut feeling" call on Singleton committing to Michigan. It was very very sneaky, but it's in the recruiting roundup from today. His comment was something like...
"I fully expect this to end up like a Rashan Gary deal with Clemson, but my gut tells me that he will be signing with the good guys at the end of the day." I'm mostly paraphrasing there, but he snuck that in with the rundown of the visitor list for this weekend.
If one was to overanalyze this, he may be saying that Singleton silently committed to Michigan already. Or he may be saying that it's possible he announces his commitment at the game with his "at the end of the day" comment. Or he may have just been told by Drew's father enough that he's coming to Michigan that his gut is full. OR he may have accidentally brought out the gut.
My bet is on either option #1 or #3. Sam would have corrected himself otherwise. And more often than not he will specifically say "this is not a gut feeling" if it wasn't, so yeah... Option #1 or #3. Sounds like we can expect his committment "at the end of the day," whatever that means (likely signing day).

The way the injury happened, at least in my opinion, there was a good chance it was going to happen regardless on a different play. Knee ligaments can damage over time to where eventually they just snap.
I am no doctor, but one of my buddies I played soccer with tore his ACL while playing on a similar non-contact move. His doctor informed him that there was scared tissue all over from his extensive years of playing soccer, and that it was just a matter of time before it happenned. I wouldn't be surprised if Jeremy Clark's injury was similar given the perceived lack of torque on the knee from what I could tell.
But then again, that's just like my opinion, man.
Feel bad for Jeremy. He was having an incredible season that was probably going to result in a decent draft pick. Hopefully if he doesn't get his 6th that at least he can have a full recovery and can start where he left off playing in the NFL.

We still can't figure out whether or not we should recognize the Fab 5 for their accomplishments almost 25 years ago for something that didn't involve any criminal activity whatsoever.
If PSU can celebrate Paterno, I have no issues celebrating the Fab 5. In fact it just pisses me off that much more that that trash school isn't getting booted out of the Big 10.
I'm at least proud of the University for making this situation a much bigger deal than Penn St is even making the child sex scandal that took place at their university for decades. Shows the integrity and ethical code of the University is very strong, which is something to be thankful for.
I just thought of all that while reading this thread, and it blew my mind enough that I felt like sharing. Perspective, man.

OSU at this point is doing the same. I think they're just being a little pickier with their Ohio kids they go after, which is probably why Solomon made a quick commitment with Michigan then backing off once OSU went after him. That's my take on it at least.
They guys they have committed in the 2017 cycle are from all over the place. Harbaugh, like you said, will take this same approach and is taking this same approach. I expect that to be even moreso in the 2018 and 2019 classes when our class size shrinks.
|10 weeks 5 days ago||While I don't agree||
While I don't agree necessarily to what he said, there is in no way a correlation between those two instances. Hitler ordered others to gas people. Paterno did not order Sandusky to rape children. Not the same thing. That does not mean he shouldn't have stopped it when he had the opportunity to, but he wasn't the one doing it.
I understand why the Penn St. community has a hard time letting this go, but they have to. Paterno had a good repuation before that realization for good reason - he did have a very positive influnce on those he taught while at Penn St. He was known for his influnce as others as leading them towards following a strong ethical code, strong academics, etc. He had probably the biggest impact on that community for the longest period of time.
That doesn't change what he did, however, and you have to do your best to move on from that. If you want change in the university, you need to prove that you're moving forward and not living in the long extensive past that was polluted by Sanducky's actions and those that enabled those actions by not taking their societal and ethical responsibility of stopping them. You just can't ignore that. I'm afraid that the university will never recover if they don't move past it all.
Besides, if there ever was a time where it might possibly be OK to remember Paterno for the good that he did do during his lifetime, it is not now. This is going to take years to recover from, DECADES.
Paterno may not be Hitler, but he's not ready to be remembered.

|11 weeks 1 day ago||Last season we were also||
Last season we were also playing with a recovering Walton and Irvin along with the loss of our back-up PG who probably would have played near starter's minutes.
The season before we were without Caris again, Walton was hurt basically all year, and McGary was robbed of eligibility. Not to mention Horford bolted (which can partially be credited against Beilein).
We don't recruit enough 5*'s to be able to sustain those kind of injuries/turnovers and be able to recover from it. Yes, Beilein should be able to recruit better in order to reach that elite status, but I personally don't want to be the next Kentucky waiting for sanctions to smash our school back to the stone age again. While that still will probably never happen to Kentucky, Michigan isn't the kind of school to put up with that crap - we would send ourselves to the stone age if we were doing the kind of stuff Kentucky and Ole Miss are getting away with.
Michigan State is the kind of program I feel our basketball program should strive to be. Excellent coaching, consistent solid recruiting classes (and maybe the rare super elite class), and complete consistency with the success of the program. I think Beilein is more susceptible to inconsistency because of the fact that a lot of the guys he picks up are more project kids, and with injuries and quick turnover that just can't breed consistent elite success. That doesn't mean Beilein should be canned right now. A lot of bad luck (even bad recruiting luck) has plagued this team the last two years, and I think because of his successes that he should be given that opportunity to find success again. If he can't, replace him. I think recruiting success has picked up in the 2016 and even 2017 classes, and like I said earlier, the 5* that is now showing up at our doorstep has the potential to be a game changer. Maybe the new staff can get him signed and sealed. I think we need to give the new staff a shot to see what they can do. That's all I'm saying.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||The whack-a-Soft idea is||
The whack-a-Soft idea is glorious.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||While true, that is probably||
While true, that is probably because it is a lot easier to find reasons why the last two years were below expectations than why Beilein does in fact not know how to put a good basketball team on the court.
The problem is most of the Beilein haters were still Beilein haters when he had success. He plays a different style of basketball that is completely unlike any other successful Michigan team that stepped on the court, and some people just can't stand his style. Those individuals are a lot of the people who step up on these message boards and say "See how terrible Beilein is" as soon as it's apparent that this team is no better than a bubble team. That happened the year after the elite 8 season, and obviously it's more prevalant now with last season not being a complete turnaround from that.
That is where I have most of my issues. If you can't enjoy success because you don't like how the guy likes to play basketball, that is just absurd and egotistical. And it's an extremely similar comparison as to why Rich Rod was hated by some the moment he was announced as the new coach - there are people that did not want to see that style of football in the Big House. The only difference between those two is Rich Rod failed from the start and Beilein took a failure and turned it into a success story. (Beilein was criticized at the start of his career here as well). Now that he's failing again, however, it's easy to bring back the pitchforks and torches.
Sorry to bring up Rich Rod, but that is too easy of a comparison. They played a different style from what Michigan people were used to seeing, and so the criticisms come that much faster.
I wouldn't even argue that a lot of Michigan fans have this perspective that basketball and football should be played one way, but it is a thing for some people and that can't be denied. A lot of people just don't like change. Those individuals tend to stick out more and have a louder voice at times. And sometimes that voice just gets plain annoying.
I will add that it is understandable why we should all be disappointed in the last two years, but I see a lot more evidence as to why that happened that tells me that may not be an indication of the future of this program under Beilein. Therefore, I am not ready to give up hope on Beilein.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Best criticism with||
Best criticism with perspective I have seen yet. Appreciate your take on the situation. Actual analysis.
Don't just tell me Beliein sucks because the team was a fringe bubble team the last two years. That is not an argument. That is a very broad perspective with no in depth analysis. You aren't telling me why Beilein won't improve or what he did wrong. You're just telling me the results of the season - this is borderline ESPN crap. In fact, I believe even ESPN has done a better job than that.
Look at Kentucky a few years ago. NIT team with the talent Calipari recruited. What happened? His best player missed 3/4 of the season.
Beilein is not Calipari in any measurable way possible, but that is evidence that a young team with your star or stars hurt can devestate your season. That is the last two years at Michigan. If the team does not improve to a Sweet 16ish team this year, then I'd say let the criticism rain. He needs to show improvement. To not see WHY Michigan failed to meet expectations the last two years, however, takes no analytical work whatsoever and is extremely lazy.
Beilein has his weaknesses, but he also has his strengths. The key is improvement. And honestly health. Irvin should be closer to where he was before he hurt his back, and it still blows my mind that Freshman Walton was better than Junior Walton; I must believe that he had a similar setback with his injury in his sophomore year as he was TERRIBLE around the rim last year while he showed a lot of skills in that area his freshman year.
I'm not banking hope on La Bamba for next year, but if that somehow does happen we could soon see another swing back towards elite status. That is the one guy that has truly been missed the last two seasons. The new staff seems to be pretty solid with recruiting, and they are getting a lot of the guys they are targeting for 2017.
This is another long stupid post by me. I just seriously hope that our fans have an open mind with this season and support this team. If success rains again, I will not be surprised. I just hope the "Beilein sucks" crowd can suck up their ego enough to enjoy that success and admit that they were wrong if it does happen. If this season is another failure, I will probably be a lot closer to looking for a change as well. I just want to see what a healthy Beilein team looks like again.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Yep. Lots of butthurt in this||
Yep. Lots of butthurt in this thread. I knew I shouldn't have read through the comments.
I will just add one piece to this conversation. Injuries and early NBA draft talent depleted the lineup the past two years. No, we will not get multiple 5* recruits every year. But when your best players are hurt, it's hard to be more than a "bubble" team even with a more MSU recruiting talent. If the two deep tournament runs were five years ago, this "butthurt" crap would be more understandable and arguable. In fact, I'd probably be joining the party. It's only been two years though guys. TWO years. With obvious major injuries and departures. That is all I need to say.

For those that haven't listened, Sam Webb went nuts on Scott Frost this morning on WTKA, and it was hilarious. The last segment of the podcast is where half of it is. Probably the best half. I'm sure they will talk about this comment tomorrow as well. Can't wait.

Yeah, but I expect Peters to compete for the spot next year still. Not saying there's even a decent chance of him starting, but he will still get a shot. Depends mostly on how Speight does this season as Peters has the highest upside of all the current QB's. If Speight hits his ceiling, it would be hard to trade off that game experience.
Harbaugh will always play his best QB regardless. Same as any other position.

One does not become a near trillionaire while owning a major sports franchise and featuring on a television show with fellow top world entrepeneurs called "Shark Tank" without being a "really smart guy." I could learn a few things from him as well.
In fact, I wish I had 1/10 the brain of that man. Maybe I would have come up with a better mgoname than "CorkyCole."

App State, however, is a probable bowl team. MSU's opponent wouldn't have made a bowl game last season in the FCS if they had bowls. Tennesse should have jumped to #1 based on the MSU metric these coaches used. Not that I would agree with such things.

He may not be large in length but he is large in girth. At least for a linebacker. Especially for a freshman.

When will you guys learn. He only references his gut when it's something he heard from a direct source. And by source I mean either the coaching staff or the kids themselves. His "gut feeling" is never something to take lightly.

He actually got a ton of praise from the experts from both of those camps. At least with the Opening he did. He's known as more of a guy with more raw potential, but I thought he was definitely supposed to be a riser based off his performances. Besides, his teammate is one of the guys we are going hard at. Slaton perhaps? Don't remember which. This was a guy I was hoping would stick.
|12 weeks 6 days ago||He wasn't the only one...||
He wasn't the only one... stands looked half full on TV midway through the fourth. That being said, I've been to a few OU games where the stands were more empty than that at halftime. I think Michigan fans in general do a lot better than most with keeping the stands full throughout the game regardless of opponent.
|12 weeks 6 days ago||There's actually some truth||
There's actually some truth to this. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys are never major contributors if Harbaugh continues to recruit as strongly as he has been, particularly in the 2017 class. We are in decent to good position for 7 or so 2017 five stars. I expect that it will be a killer class.

Dave Brandon would have chased Harbaugh away. No way those two would have gotten along. And Harbaugh's football team would have been good enough to potentially save Dave Brandon's job as well. Not entirely positive about that second comment, but it is possible - at least would have prolonged it. Either way, Harbaugh's period of time in Michigan was increased by the exit of Dave Brandon.
I'm fine the way things turned out as I think it will be better for the future of Michigan football. And Michigan in general.
|13 weeks 2 days ago||I also wouldn't be surprised||
I also wouldn't be surprised if he's really good... your comment sounds somewhat personal. How do you know how good he will be? He's the starting running back for Ohio State after all. Can't remember a bad running back that ever started for an Urban Meyer team. It's not like they recruit poorly.
Even if he is good, which I think he will be, I wouldn't be surprised if he has a "difficult" time when he faces Michigan. He goin DOWN.

Or Kekoa Crawford. He's been getting some hype thru camp as well. I really don't see the need to play all three freshman WRs, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them all get some snaps either. Need to ramp up competition for next year with the top two guys graduating.

|14 weeks 4 hours ago||Exactly. If you're judging||
Exactly. If you're judging this entirely as a "Michigan" athlete, Braylon had the better Michigan career as far as production goes. If you were to take each player's college careers and judge which one should have been the more successful professional athlete, it would be uncommon to think that Brady would be more successful in the NFL.
Obviously that wasn't the case, but to me both players professional careers are somewhat shocking. Braylon could have been Calvin Johnson before Calvin Johnson if only for his hands, and without Tom Brady's Harbaughness and competitive motor one would think he should have been closer to Orlovsky than the best QB of all time. Football and athletes are weird sometimes.
