Jokes aside, this is absolutely disgusting. If true, Petino should be banned for life as well as the "assistant," and the Louisville program should be put up for the SMU treatment. I can't stand this kind of stuff. NCAA needs to start cracking down on this kind of stuff and get rid of it. (Not that I ever expect this to happen in the slightest to make that clear.)
And quick thought, even if the legal age for consent is 16 in the state of Kentucky, does it matter if the kid is visiting from a state where the legal age is 18? Just curious.

Guessing the negs have to do with my Sam Webb comment. Thought that might happen.
What I meant was I don't have the knowledge of those who listen to Sam Webb have... not that he's not worth listening to. I was making fun of my lack of recruiting wisdom. Guess I should neg myself too then.
I will say though that Falcon was probably Harbaugh's #1 RB in this class, so if for some reason that's a really bad thing then I definitely won't be surprised if he pushes for another one. Even more so if the ground game continues to get established; if I was a big burley man-child of a RB, Smith's last game against Oregon State would catch my interest for sure.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||I remember that quote as||
I remember that quote as well. What that tells me, however, is that he's going to get his shot at QB. Who knows if that's Harbaugh's #1 intended position for him, especially with a guy like Peters coming in the same class, but he will most definitely get his shot. Harbaugh loves competition.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||With Harbaugh, all things are||
With Harbaugh, all things are possible. I would guess that RB recruiting is done though, unless you hear chatter to the likes of what you mentioned... one guy projected to another position or Falcon's injury projected as long term.
One thing I am pretty sure about, however, is that Viramontes probably won't end up at RB at any point in his career. He very well may, because Harbaugh and all, but I could see him at another offensive position (H-Back/TE) over RB. Though I can't recall his height...
That's the take from a complete non-expert who doesn't listen to Sam Webb.

|2 weeks 5 days ago||In all reality, this is doing||
In all reality, this is doing Shane a HUGE favor if he in fact gets that redshirt. He's not going to play this year except for meaningless snaps barring a Rudock injury; if he gets the redshirt, he still has two years to play college football. If he doesn't, he only has one.
Let's say Shane plans on transferring after this year; if he completes his degree, he can go ahead and leave with two years left of eligibility to play somewhere else; if he doesn't, he has a transfer year then can play somewhere else as a 5th year - NOT an option if he plays this year and doesn't acquire his degree.
If he sticks it out and competes for next year's spot (which I have little doubt that he will), he can compete next year and still have one year left to either play for Michigan or somewhere else as a grad transfer. If he wins the job at Michigan next season, that's two years of being a starter; if he loses the job, he has one year left with a grad year option to play immediately.
All that being said, if Shane wants his shot at playing as a starting college football quarterback, he really needs this redshirt. If he doesn't get it, coming back to Michigan next year may be a much tougher decision for him knowing that may be his last chance at playing football. I know he is a seriously strong competitor with a LOT of self confidence (which is fantastic), but that is an extremely difficult decision to make when you have a guy like O'Korn battling for next year's spot in your final year of eligibility. Maybe he gives it the spring to see how things are looking and makes a final decision from there. Either way, I really hope for this redshirt year for Shane, not even really for Michigan (although it benefits them too for sure), but I'm sure Shane would love to have that 5th year option.

Now we are so pumped that our little 2* is going to be healthy so that he can take away playing time from our elite 5*s because we need a lift in our running back play.
THIS IS WHY WE DON'T WHINE TO MOMMA WHEN HARBAUGH SNAGS THE TWO STARS BECAUSE THEY WILL BE AWESOME!
|3 weeks 3 days ago||The thing is that there are||
The thing is that there are always more than one option for each kid. Just because they don't choose to come here doesn't mean they wouldn't want to be here if they were to choose UM.
Have you ever had to choose between two girls you liked because it was time to commit to one? They're both good options but ultimately you have to choose one, so you figure out which one you think is the best option and you go with it. I'm not saying we should be all butthurt over not being picked #1 and cry to Momma, but there's a reason Winston was in it this far with us - He really likes what UM has to offer. Maybe it's best we move on now, but you have to live with it knowing that you didn't give the kid the full chance to commit when he was ready to.
And the girl analogy works perfectly because there never is just one. No matter how long you go between girls, two will always show up once one surfaces.

This was a tough first game for a new program on the road, and I think the second half was very promising for what is possible with this team. |5 weeks 5 days ago||I was going to post a comment||
I was going to post a comment similar to this, so I'm glad I read the comments first. There is no doubt in my mind that this would be another "49ers" situation all over again. Harbaugh needs his freedom and control, and there's no way Brandon would have been fine giving him that. I mean geez, do you honestly think Harbaugh would not only allow Brandon into his film sessions but also allow him to state his opinions/suggestions on how to run his team? Jim would throw him out after a huge yelling match no doubt, which... who can just throw their boss out of a room and not get fired? Probably Jim Harbaugh, but that's besides the point.
This is the best situation possible currently, so my hopes are that when we hire a replacement AD that he understands his role in regards to how to approach people in leadership roles and how to manage them. Sometimes the best "leaders" just need to allow other great leaders to lead. I'd say Jim fits that bill.

I would say that this is one of my strongest weaknesses - My wife would confirm this.
Not saying Jim is this way, but I think for most of us it is difficult to remain completely "focused" when there are distractions out there that face us. Jim is in GO MODE right now, and it's obvious to me that he wants to stay in GO MODE. And while I don't think there's ever a time for him not to be in GO MODE, I'm pretty sure he understands that his brain cannot deal properly (and more than likely politely) with distractions at this point. He's starting something new, and he's going at it full force. Complete motivation.

I'm thinking the numbers change daily, so there would be no good reason to guess who #1 is because it will probably be different tomorrow. Who we consider the best player on the team is probably a lot different than how Harbaugh ranks his players.
We all heard before how Harbaugh puts lists out in front of the players' faces (in public fashion was my initial perception) as far as in the gym and on the field, so this ranking system doesn't surprise me. Part of me thinks everyone knows where everyone stands based off of what I've heard as to how he did things in Stanford and so on.

|9 weeks 2 days ago||I understand the whole no||
I understand the whole no spiritual crap, but I do have to make one comment. If you don't believe in Christianity or what it's founded on, that's your deal and that's fine. But your comment tells me you completely misinterpret the reasoning behind the "mission." The act of "converting" someone to Christianity is a completely selfless act of service that is only attempted because of a general care for people; it has everything to do with the belief of what happens to those who don't follow Christianity - an act of love for people. And the "medical missions" are done for people regardless if they convert or not - it is not a requirement to sign on the dotted line seal it with blood in order to receive care. It is an act of service, again because of a care for the well being of others.
There are bad apples in every social/spiritual group (even among Michigan fans), so don't assume every Christian or Christian act of service is littered in selfishness. Again, I respect your beliefs or lack of Christian belief, but you don't have to be a Christian to appreciate what Tebow did there in Indonesia.
Mods, I apologize for the addition to the "no religion" policy. But I ask if you remove my comment then please remove his as well.

In my personal opinion, we can think what we want to think and judge past performance to come up with an answer, but with this coaching staff it is a completely new ball game.
I don't think there's any way to have a clue as to who will start in the fall. Completely new coaching staff. New offensive to learn. And what I'm assuming is a lot more teaching to be had. Any one of these guys could all of a sudden "get it" and end up the starter. Last years performances may have had more to do with the coaching than the talent, and I think we will figure that all out once we see who is on top and how they perform.
This is the cop out answer if anyone wants to join me.

Sometimes it feels as if we believe Harbaugh is a terrible evaluator solely because the guys he picks up are either ranked as a generic two star or unranked. Seriously? One of the guys gets bumped to a three star and we have to assume he isn't even that quality of a recruit? You guys need to start taking anti-depressants or something.

You wouldn't be referring to Jabrill Peppers now would you?
I think there was some hints that at least he was going to get some exposure to the offense, and potentially make a "surprise" showing in the Spring game, but that obviously never happened.
Based off of the conclusion from this discussion alone, I would be shocked if he didn't get AT LEAST a few reps a game in the offense. Harbaugh is known to not shy away from letting guys play on both sides of the ball, and this is probably the biggest weapon he's ever had with those capabilites. Personally, I believe if you throw Peppers on the offense a decent amount, you can make a capable offense very explosive and exciting in a hurry.

Good luck to him and everything, but he made the announcement about the announcement prior to him "deciding" to go to Alabama if his father is correct based off that quote. Just makes no sense to me. These are the kind of things that might happen when you are forced to make a decision because it's time sensitive, not something you do seven months prior to your deadline.
Color me skeptical, but again, good luck to him whatever he does.

There are a few record labels where I tend to like most of the artists signed by them. One of them in particular releases full album playlists for much of the music produced under their label on YouTube, and I have found and purchased a lot of good music because of the free resource that was provided for my use. This would be an effective way for small bands to get their music out there and in turn bring additional profits by being more exposed. YouTube is not the end all be all for me for music, so obviously I still am in need of another outlet to listen to their music via other devices. Because of this, I am more likely to purchase their music.
Smaller bands and artists that don't get the radio play need a way for listeners to find them, and there are plenty of "free" tools out there to do that. When you go and rip their music for free, yes you may end up going to a concert some day or buy a shirt another, but you no longer need another means of listening which would reinforce spending money to support them since you already have a physical copy. So while ripping music may in fact help bring money into artists pockets by allowing them to gain more of a following and such, they still have that opportunity with all these other free media outlets available online that don't provide you with an actual physical/digital copy of their music. It would benefit them more if they were discovered using those outlets rather than just having their music "ripped" because there's still the need of purchase.

But these once again are all FINAL RANKINGS. Half of the "two stars" Harbaugh has picked up lately haven't even been partially evaluated. If you recall, Canteen and Brandon Watson had similar rankings a couple years back until they were finally evaluated later on. Canteen turned out to be a solid four star composite and Watson a high three star composite. Wait until these guys get fully evaluated before you crash all over Harbaugh's recruiting strategy.
And while I understand that you used the appropriate tools to validate an argument and were a lot less distasteful and much more subtle about it, this collection of thoughts needs to be put aside for down the road as a whole. Way too many people up in arms about the whole thing right now.

I thought the common thread with these guys is that they are smart AND athletic.
This kinda crap gets said after every three star or lower commits to any major UM sport. Have we not leaned to shut our traps until we see how things trend? These guys will all get heavily scouted now that they've committed to the most talked about coach in the sport. There is no doubt in my mind that there will be a few four stars out of these guys Harbaugh is pulling in from these camps as underrated recruits.
We all love the starz; we all understand where you are coming from. Any of us who are saying you unbelievers need to shut it, we aren't saying that starz/more skilled players don't matter. We are just saying that before you believe he's recruiting a MAC team, wait for the final rankings to come out once the class is full and signed. Cousins was not a bad college quarterback. That is the only statement I'm trying to make. If he was bad, he wouldn't have NFL starts to his name THREE YEARS INTO HIS PRO CAREER even if there wasn't much ahead/behind him. Bad quarterbacks also don't get drafted in the fourth round.

My point was that he's in the NFL and is actually playing snaps. There were a few times even I thought of picking him up off waivers for my fantasy team because he was putting up pretty decent numbers while he was starting. If he wasn't a good quarterback, he wouldn't be in the NFL at all. Plenty of good college quarterbacks don't make it/transition to the NFL. He's no worse than Chad Henne at this point, and I don't think we would say that Chad Henne was a bad college quarterback. I just feel that sometimes our homerism gets the best of us at times.

One and dones are still going to be one and dones, but more than likely overseas. I'm not sure why a kid would go to school for a semester just to jump right to the NBA, but there probably would be one or two - It is more likely they just train for a year instead.
THEN there will be a buttload of kids that only play one year instead of two or two years instead of three. I'm not sure how that does anything but seriously damage the athletic programs, even if the focus is meant to be on education first.
FINALLY, it has been said all over within these discussions that the freshmen would still be participating in practices and scrimmages and more than likely attend games. The NCAA would essentially have to ban all "redshirted" players from attending certain meetings/practices or limit their time schedules dedicated to their athletic progression in order to get some sort of academic benefit out of this. And if they do that, how does that help the kid out if his goal is to play in the NBA? You're limiting the "athlete's" progression and in turn hurting their futures as NBA prospects. This MAY even deter some of them from attending school and push them towards a short-term international career before shooting for the NBA as well; I'm not sure how this helps these kids academically.
The kids that want to be in school will be in school, so they don't need a redshirt year if they have the ability to play and still plan to focus on their academics - Not only will you be hurting these kids but the athletic programs that are in need of immediate help.
More than likely if the NCAA opens this back up, you will probably see the NBA react within a year or two by allowing players to play right out of high school (ala MLB), which will be silmilar to back in the Kobe/Lebron days where there was a flood of kids headed for the NBA before attending a college course. INSTEAD, the flood will be even greater and create an even larger issue because of the "redshirt" year requirement.
These are my thoughts at least.

|22 weeks 4 days ago||It's not difficult at all for||
It's not difficult at all for most of us, but for some of us it's not quite so simple. It's easy to think logically in your own mind, but for some logic is misconstrued and addictions and psychological differences make it difficult for them to make positive life choices on a consistent basis. You do realize that ONE poor decision resulted in these consequences. One bad day. One terrible decision. There may have been another incident in the past, but this is the choice that resulted in him being dismissed.
I may not struggle with a violent past where it is difficult to control my "violent" behaviors, but I do have my own daily battles because of both my encounters and poor past decisions. It doesn't matter what society perceives those battles as in comparison to others struggles, it is still a psychological battle to deal with those struggles and not falter. I imagine it is the same for most of us - we have our evils and things we try to improve upon ourselves every day.
Last thing I will say is that the best thing you can do when you do make those big mistakes is not only learn from them but teach others about how to avoid those situations and how to be more aware of those things - if you help prevent one person from making those same mistakes, then you have turned a negative into a positive. I am glad to see that Frank Clark has started this process.
End of book.

The only reason I think we wouldn't be is because of last years cluster. Analysts in general don't pay a whole lot of attention to the "injury bugs" and probably would assume a normal projection due to gained experience. I think we will be at the bottom of the top 25 without him and around 10-15 with him in the fold, but my guess is with the lineup that will be put on the floor with him (and a bit of an unknown in Wagner) that we will probably surprise most people.
I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with you, but I fully expect this team to be on some analysts final four boards at the end of the season. Again, this is WITH Brown. However, I still think we could breach that status with Williams instead of Brown. I'm going to be super pumped about that kid as well if we snag him instead of Brown. Elite shooter = Beilein magic.

Holy insane depth, Batman. First ever for Beilein at Michigan? Yes, believe so. Even in our most recent great years, our good depth was 7/8 strong.. so this heavily trumps that.
I really wouldn't be surprised to see some early entry NBA guys next year from this lineup... Potential for Levert, Irvin and Walton. If Irvin plays like he has the last few weeks all season long, there will be some definite chatter with him. Walton was on the board before he got hurt and his play suffered from it. And Dawkins, man... I'm not going to say it wont happen.
|29 weeks 1 day ago||Sometimes I wonder how many||
Sometimes I wonder how many of us on this board, especially those that tend to be more critical of others and their mistakes, have littered themselves with poor decisions that they try to hide (expecially from themselves).
The truth of the matter is that there isn't one individual on this planet that hasn't made a regrettable mistake in their lives and hasn't faced adversity. David Harrison is doing everything he can to provide for his family and survive, and props to him for learning from his mistakes and trying to better himself with the situation he's currently in. It's easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves and sulk in our adversity and get nowhere. This man is facing it and trying to figure out how he can overcome it in order to support those he's responsible for.
In no way is this funny. From someone who has learned from his own past mistakes and thankfully been able to learn from them and in turn been blessed from that wisdom, I seriously hope David figures out how to turn that intelligence of his into something that will help bring him the success and fulfillment he desires. He has obviously matured, and because of that he deserves a shot at fulfillment.

Walton > Spike... when healthy. Even when he's not, he still showcases skills that Spike just doesn't have. Spike is a better pure point guard, but we have also learned that Beilein's teams thrive with a skilled athletic point guard.
I guess the better way of putting it is that in no way should Spike ever supplant Walton as the starter where Walton is forced to sit on the bench. He was incredible as a developing freshman, and he has the potential to be an NBA draft pick if he's allowed to showcase that development when healthy next year. He was a projected pick this past year until he got hurt, and this is a guy that should only help is status with another year.
Walton is going to be phenomenal for us next year, and I can't wait to see the development of this team with a healthy Walton and potential Levert return, not to mention Duncan Robinson and the possibility of getting this overseas kid. We seriously have a chance to be an incredibily special team again next year.
And with the projection that Dawkins is currently on, I would not be surprised to see him blow up next year. Like gone to NBA ala Burke/Stauskas blow up.
This year's team is fun to watch, but next year's has the potential to be extremely fun.

I see what you're saying, and I agree with a lot of it. However, there are still a lot of kids that want to make their college choice prior to their senior year, and that number seems to continually grow year after year. Some schools just have to be crossed off the list because of the fact that they can't afford to visit (especially with family).
I think that the kids who want to see that gameday atmosphere and make those late decisions are still going to do that whether or not they have the opportunity to check out the campus on an official before their senior season. I don't think the timelines for a decision of many recruits will actually change much with earlier official visits, but it will give recruits and their families who want to make those earlier decisions a real good look at the schools they are truly interested in no matter the required distance traveled. Some families have the money to do those things on their own, and some don't.
