That bylaw seems fairly vague to me. It states that the committee must award
at least 50 percent of the championship field to conferences that meet automatic-qualification criteria and provide a play-in criteria. The remaining 50 percent of the championship field shall be reserved for at-large teams.
I don't think that the bolded sections quite mesh. Are they aiming for a true 50/50 split, or are automatic qualifiers more important?
I took that from 184.108.40.206.1 Team Sports Other Than Men’s Basketball
I don't think the bylaws are a hindrance to this playoff proposal, but hopefully somebody that has a better grasp of them can explain it to me.

|5 years 8 weeks ago||I came on too strong in my||
I came on too strong in my original post, but Brian's take on the first Winston assault has been grating on me for a year.
He's wrong in treating the first Winston fight like everything is cut and dry, when it’s really a jumbled mess. Claiming that Sturges was innocent is an example of that. Despite what the “witnesses” (fellow hockey players and their friends) have to say, he was involved to some extent. Another thing is the belief that Winston beat on Sturges so badly that he had to be hospitalized (though not mentioned in this post, Brian has mentioned it before, and it does appear to be the prevailing view on this site). Based on Sturges own words, it’s more likely that his severe injuries came from falling to the ground after he was hit. Same legal outcome, but two drastically different events.
The 20% number isn’t true for last year’s fight and I think it’s an overestimation for the recent assault as well. And last year’s incident was not an unprovoked act.
Brian also said that the current incident was caused by last year’s incident. I think that’s quite a stretch. If they felt the punishment was light, then why the ski masks? The “light punishment” (multi-game suspension, jail time) didn’t cause the second attack; it just changed where it happened.
I’m not saying any of this to justify the actions of Dantonio or anybody on the football team. Winston should have been kicked off the team last year, as should any goons involved in this year’s assault. There should also be jail time. I just think it’s funny that Brian’s attitude on this story seems so similar to the msm attitude that he regularly rails on.
And why are people so surprised and pissed that Rosenberg is acting like this? Writers have to get in their licks when they have the chance because winning makes everything else irrelevant. Right now MSU is winning (yeah, 6-6 is winning for that program) and Michigan isn't. It's that simple. Win and it all goes away.
|5 years 8 weeks ago||Rosenberg dislikes Rodriguez||
Rosenberg dislikes Rodriguez and that has been obvious for quite a while. But apparently that bias draws readers, so the Freep isn't going to do anything about it.
It's also clear that Brian has no fucking clue what he's talking about in regards to the incidents at State, yet he continues to talk out his ass about them.
It's funny to see so much bias in a post about bias. Understandable, but still funny.

I don't understand why everybody is getting so bent out of shape over this article. Yeah, the author is an idiot and there's a pro MSU bias, but I've read much worse both for and against Michigan.
There are quotes from Spartans saying that beating a 3-9 Michigan team is not the same as beating a typical Michigan team, and that the 1 win doesn't mean a whole lot if they can't follow it up. He mentions MSU's abysmal record against Michigan from the past 40 years and the disparity in B10 championships. This is the type of stuff that I regularly read on this board.
The author favorably compares Michigan to LSU, Florida and Bama. He notes that Michigan is pulling in highly talented recruits from around the country and says that if Michigan isn't recruiting enough players from in-state, then it's because the players aren't good enough.
I think that if the goal of this article was to slobber on MSU and shit on Michigan, then it did a terrible job.

Your argument is based on your assumption that Michigan State has been the top team in the Big 10 for the last decade year in and year out. That's just not true. They haven't won the conference since 01. That 7-5 record from 04-08 is not of a regular conference champion receiving high seeds. It's a team in the middle of the pack that gets a seed from 5-9 and wins, on average, more games than it should have. When they were actually winning the conference they made it to 3 straight final fours. I guess the big 10 failed to prepare them back then.
If you want to say that Izzo has maxed his potential, that's fine. I don't agree, but that's fine. But to say that he won't be able to compete for a final four in the future because the Big 10 fails to properly prepare his teams for the tournament is just stupid.
BTW, the Big 10 is 2nd in conference RPI this year.

If he plays 2-3 more years, gets to 50 career ints, and earns another pro bowl and 1st team all pro then he would have a decent shot.

Why do you think that Georgia is better than OSU? They don't have any big wins, and they got absolutely murdered by Bama and Florida. Plus they gave up 400 rushing yards and 45 points against Tech.

I said "better fit" not "better coach." Dantonio is a better fit at Michigan State than Kelly would have been. Dantonio brought stability. He said he's going to stay there and everybody at State believes him. If Kelly had been given that job 2 years ago, he would be leaving for a better job this offseason.

Well, a handful of his players did beat somebody to death. That was beyond his control but it sure doesn't look good. To some people I'm sure that the incident shows he's willing to recruit kids with character issues as long as they can help him win. (I think that sort of thing is bunk, but people are idiots)
When talking about the murder he said this about the players involved: “A number of them were African Americans that had been in that culture of violence.” That generated an uproar and labeled him a racist. I guess there was also a Free Press article implying that he was involved in a murder cover up, but i can't find it.
Here's a CMU article talking about the Freep article.

|6 years 9 weeks ago||The ACC does have a lot of||
The ACC does have a lot of great schools, and I guess you could consider it a better academic conference. The thing with the B10 is that the conference has always had an academic side and they aren't going to take a Florida State that would drag the whole conference down.
|6 years 9 weeks ago||I think that the Red River||
I think that the Red River Shootout hasn't been hurt because it's in the middle of the season and not the traditional last game. Plus it was a non-con game for most of its history, so that probably factors in as well.
|6 years 9 weeks ago||The Big 10 is the best||
The Big 10 is the best academic conference top to bottom.
Every B10 school is ranked in the top 75 of the US News & World Report's college rankings (I know they're subjective, but it's a good starting point) and 5 are ranked in the top 50. Only the ACC has more top 50 schools with 6. The lowest ranked B10 school, Michigan State, is ranked 71st, higher than 33 of the 64 other BCS schools. Every other conference has at least three schools ranked lower than MSU. Plus the University of Chicago is still associated with the academic wing of the B10.
So, that's where it comes from.
For the record, Rice is a member of Conference USA, not the Big 12.

Just kidding. I agree with a lot of what you posted, but I think that this stems from how he left West Virginia, and I'm not referring to the buyout. |6 years 11 weeks ago||Rich Rod left WVU for one of||
Rich Rod left WVU for one of the 5 best jobs in college football. Tennessee is not of those jobs.
There are several factors that should keep Dantonio at MSU. His kids were born in Michigan, and his wife is adamant about this being his last job. His fanbase thinks that he is a god. Expectations are relatively low; he's not expected to compete for the MNC. His biggest rivals are currently as bad as they've ever been.
The only thing that Tennessee can offer Dantonio is money. He'd have ridiculous expectations, an insane fanbase that would 2nd guess his every move, a much tougher conference, and rivals that are currently elite teams. Plus his recruiting experience is in the midwest and not the southeast.
The comparisons/allusions to Saban are ridiculous. The situations are not even remotely similar. Saban is the ultimate money grubbing whore. I don't understand how anybody could see Nick Saban in Mark Dantonio. Dantonio wants to build MSU into an elite program. Can he do it? I doubt it. But I think that he's gonna give it his best shot. And I don't think that he'll leave before he either accomplishes that goal or fails horribly while trying to do so.

I hate rushing 2 and dropping linemen into the short zone. Last year, the lions would do that with Shaun Rogers in the red zone. That resulted in a touchdown 90% of the time.
