|3 years 2 weeks ago||I know I'm on a Michigan||
I know I'm on a Michigan blog, but the bias in this thread is ridiculous. If Devin keeps up this pace, he should absolutely go to the NFL after this season. Think about this:
1) Devin already has his degree. This will not keep him in Ann Arbor. I know he loves his teammates and the University, but with Gallon, Lewan and Schofield all graduating, he might feel it is his time to go as well (although I hope not).
2) If he stays healthy, he will have 17 (hopefully 18) starts under his belt. Now that our offense mirrors many current NFL offenses, he will have enough experience to warrant being a first round pick.
3) His physical tools are phenomenal. Tall, mobile, accurate. He needs to work on footwork and arm strength, but those can be improved through hard work. He has the genetics needed to be a star QB.
4) His mental tools are also outstanding. Devin is a really bright guy. He already has command of the playbook, and I believe he has free reign to audible when he wants. There might not be much more for him to learn with another year going against defenses like Akron and Indiana.
If Devin's draft stock is high enough, he should strike while the iron is hot. We've seen what can happen when you stay that extra year after having a great one (Leinart lost millions when he passed up leaving to take ballroom dancing; Matt Barkley and Landry Jones come to mind as recent QBs who stayed one year too long). I would love nothing more to get another year of Devin Gardner, but I'm preparing for him to leave after this year. And I will be very happy for him if he finds himself in that situation.

You're putting way too much on Mary Sue Coleman here. She would eliminate our athletic department if it didn't turn a profit for the University. I don't think she cares who the next coach is. As for Dave Brandon, we have no idea how well he is with personnel decisions because he hasn't been at UofM long enough. Quite frankly, I don't agree with him treating the athletic department as business (and this is coming from a Ross student). He's been underwhelming so far to me.
And I disagree that they have more to lose. Brandon is still the Chairman of Dominoes' Board of Directors. He has cushy landing spots. As for Coleman, a bad head coach hire will not hurt her position at this University whatsoever. As long as she still raises enough money, she's here until she wants to leave.

The computers do not use margin of victory to determine their rankings. The BCS does not allow it because of this exact situation. However, both Sagarin and Massey (two computer poll administrators) say that they do not agree with this, so they determine MOV-free BCS rankings and then their true rankings with MOV included. That 83 points will solely influence human voters and have no impact on the computers.
For the record, I hate the BCS too, but this is not something you can pin on them.

I'm not a coach, but I believe that both of the wide-open half back wheel routes ended in his zone, and Avery wasn't there to stop them. He got sucked to the middle of the field on deep posts when he had help there (Vinopal) and left his zone open for two touchdowns.

And don't tell me he can't throw the ball downfield, because his DSR has been over 60% in every game this year. Do you watch any other spread rushing offenses? Denard is the prototypical spread QB, and would probably be a good pro-style QB, but your underlying biases are killing what your own eyes see on Saturdays. However, with a labor dispute looming and more important issues being contested (length of season, fines/suspensions on hits, rookie salary slotting system, etc.), I don't see the NFL making any changes for this CBA.

Most important advice: apply as early as possible.
If you're in-state, GPA and ACT are basically all that matters if you apply early (by early, I mean breaking down the door to your counselor's office September 6th, 2011). Obviously, don't write a terrible essays, but mediocre essays can get you in if you apply early. Your essays and your extra-curriculars become increasingly important the later you apply.
If you're out-of-state, everything matters. Make sure you are concise, yet powerful with your essays. Try not to go over the word limit by too much. And have at least one strong leadership post in high school if possible (pres/vp of a club or a team captain).
Also, UofM moved to the Common App this year. I don't know how that will influence the admissions department, so I would keep up with any people that you know who are applying this year to gauge the change due the Common App.

Use the reply button next time.
And perhaps I worded that incorrectly, but I don't understand how people are picking Roundtree out of a receiving corp that, according to Brian, "chooses straws before the game" to determine who has a breakout performance. If you want to go by total yards, then Stonum should get it next year. If you want to go by best blocking, it's got to go to Odoms. If you're looking at big plays in clutch situations, Junior might have the edge after last week. If you want the guy who's been the most consistent this season and who has the best Donald Duck voice, Roundtree is your guy.
Braylon Edwards establishing a scholarship at UofM is a great thing. Reminding everyone that he was the man in college and griping about who should get the number 1 jersey was selfish and detrimental to Coach Rodriguez. Make the number 1 jersey just like every other jersey our players can choose, and stop putting it on a pedestal.

Does anyone else think it's ironic when we praise Denard, Coach Rodriguez and the athletic department for promoting "the team, the team, the team" aspect of our season, but then we turn around and want to single out one wide receiver to carry on a tradition of wearing number 1?
Just me? Okay then. Carry on degrading the rest of our wide receivers.

|6 years 2 weeks ago||I don't really understand why||
I don't really understand why the NFL allows the grabbing of hair to tackle. They don't allow facemasks or horse-collars because of the potential for injury (specifically to the head and neck). Grabbing someone's hair and jerking them down, causing intense neck pain, seems nearly equivalent to grabbing and turning someone's facemask. If the NFL takes the position of "cut your hair and you won't have that problem," then it seems awfully discriminatory towards cultures in which long hair is more common.
Not an answer to your question, but something that has always troubled me.

The fact that the line started at +4 and has moved to +3.5 shows that more people are betting on Michigan, but only by a small margin. If all of you really want Michigan to be the Vegas "favorite," you are more than welcome to bet as much as your heart desires so that the line moves drastically. The odds-makers only set the first line; anything after that is up to the the people who put their money where their mouths are and actually bet.

I'm okay with Boise State being number one for now because they beat the best team of anyone in the top 25, but I hope you will drop them as they get into their WAC schedule and start beating piss poor teams. Will you put Miami or Florida State above Boise State next week if they beat either Ohio State or Oklahoma, respectively? Because that is essentially what you are doing here by moving Boise State up 4 spots for beating your ninth ranked team.

We'll have to wait for the UFR, but I think most of UConn's big pass plays were from their receivers finding holes in our zone coverage (this happens when you don't get enough pressure on the quarterback) rather than an error on any specific player. When these passes are completed, Kovacs is usually the first guy there for the tackle, thus most people (unfairly or not) put the blame on him. He's the secondary's scapegoat.
|6 years 3 weeks ago||I hope it is done like the||
I hope it is done like the Big 12 basketball schedule has been done. The "divisions" are only used for scheduling (2 vs. division, 1 vs. non-division), but they have no impact on the standings (everyone is together, no separation based on division).
|6 years 3 weeks ago||Not Quite True||
Your conference record is your conference record. There is no added weight to a loss whether they are in your division or not. A loss for Ohio State against Michigan is the same as a loss against someone in their own division. So you could knock Ohio State out of title game with a victory against them (Example: Ohio State and Wisconsin are both 7-1 going into the final weekend [assuming 9 conference games]; we beat Ohio State, and Wisconsin beats Iowa... Wisconsin in, Ohio State out.)
You do have a valid argument if we're going into tiebreakers though. In a tiebreaking situation, the division record will be a factor.
Edit: Yeah, I'm super slow. Sorry.

Someone previously asked if AJAX takes away page views (another question that I don't have an answer for), and if this is the case, then it wouldn't surprise me at all if the point change was entirely an economic decision. Brian and Tim have to eat too.

Does Brian get any sort of monetary gain by a rise in posts? With votes now costing you points, users will be more willing to post back "I agree" (net gain of 1 point, rather than a net loss of -1 point for an up-vote). If his ad revenue is based on posts, he's been losing out on an easy revenue stream with a voting system that allows people to vote without posting. If this is the case, the fastest way to get rid of this new system is through "Beveled Guilt."
|6 years 6 weeks ago||While this seems like a good||
While this seems like a good idea in theory, there are some users that have a large amount of MGoPoints that I don't think should have the authority to hold so much power. Many users on this site have rapid gains in points by posting opinions they know will get up-voted, but these posts never have value other than affirming a previously stated opinion (which should have been recognized with a +1). Contrarians are few and far between on this site. I'm hoping this is why Brian is implementing this system.

Why shouldn't Woolfolk call Tate out in public? Clearly, RichRod and other members of the team have told Tate in private that he needs to mature. Then in the spring, OUR COACH, not just a player, called Tate out indirectly in public. If Tate still isn't going to off-season training sessions (even if they're not mandatory), then I'm glad a senior is calling him out. This isn't high school football anymore. He needs to grow up.

Judging by the amount of support for Denard this off-season (by sophomores [Roh] and seniors [T-Wolf] alike), I think Team Moxie may have one player on it.
