But you do realize that there are legitimately no qualifications necessary to be nominated to the United States Supreme Court, right? Like none. Presumably you must be alive but even that isn't specified. We have had a Supreme Court Justice that never even graduated from high school. And that was in the 20th century, not the 19th. Now the Senate might prefer some legal background, but it is in no way a "requirement" of the position. It's a weird thing.

Just out of curiosity, having watched the race live this past weekend and now having watched that video, does anyone think American Pharoah might have been held back a little? I keep having the sense that there was more speed left and the jockey was smart enough to know that you can't do any better than first place.
Now I have no idea if any extra pace by AP would have matched Secretariat's time, nor do I have any idea if Secretariat took the foot off the pedal either(entirely possible though maybe not as likely), but the viewing of everything leaves me with more questions.
Either way, incredible horses and incredible races.

I don't remember a time when I wasn't a Michigan fan. I suppose, like many others, I was born into it. I still have a hard time finding the point where my father stops and Bo begins. My aunt received a degree from Michigan. Both my mother and father would have happily attended were it not for circumstances getting in the way. And in retrospect, I don't know where else I would have gone to college. The moment that envelope arrived in the mail, there was no decision to be made. My cousin was a part of Steve Kornacki's "Block M" OL group but my fandom was established long before.
In short, I never knew there was an option.

I vividly remember sitting in the office and getting a call from my mom which is a rare enough event when I'm at work to indicate that something is wrong. I answered the call and she was choked up on the other end and simply said "He's gone." About that same instant, I started getting texts and emails coming out of the woodwork from people expressing shock, sadness, etc.
It took me a minute and a few hanging questions to find out that it was Bo passing and not my dad. Honestly, I'm not sure which one would have surprised me more.
Regardless, the moment hit pretty hard and I ended up taking the rest of the day off to sort of wander around aimlessly. I managed to stop the aimless wander and return to work in the following days but I'm not sure our football program ever has.
Actually, I'm not sure I've ever fully recovered from that weekend either.

Just to pile on with everyone else, both the Shaaras are fantastic writers. Jeff did an admirable job picking up where his father left off. He really came into his own with the two book set on the American Revolution (Rise to Rebellion and The Glorious Cause). If you read no more Shaara than that, at least read those two.
He is now in the middle of writing a set on the Civil War western theatre and they are quite good as well.
Also, Michael Shaara wote For the Love of the Game which is a fantastic story that Kelly Preston tried to massacre on the big screen.
Fun fact, you can get signed first editions each time Jeff releases a new book direct from his website. See jeffshaara.com

I suspect it was hyperbole but I think the author meant to imply that the five starters form together as one in a giant, Voltron-esque punctuation mark that may or may not be effective in protecting the quarterback or turning our running game loose. Its a bold strategy, but we just won't know until we've seen it on the field.

I certainly don't mean to imply there is anything about a hoax of that nature that could be considered understandable. Generally speaking, I don't understand people that lie/cheat/steal. Most people, I think, are similar in this respect. All I mean to say is that it is plausible a little bad idea snowballed into being a catastrophically large bad idea, and I think it is the most likely explanation unless we are going to go all in and decide that he is either a pathological liar or just plain evil.

Your explanation may actually be the closest thing to the truth so far. Sometimes people, especially those with a small selection of data points to show them otherwise, make really bad choices and its too big before they figure it out, i.e. kids lie because they don't see how big the explosion is when lies go bad. Unfortunate if true but it doesn't really make him any more of a sympathetic figure. He's already forfeited that position.

|3 years 27 weeks ago||Good catch...||
I definitely added wrong as I left the '89 draft out of consideration. I keyed in on the 3 taken in 1990. Of course, that Rice guy drafted in 1989 was pretty damn good. And for some reason I thought Vaught went before Mills in '90 but I could be wrong about that.
Sure we had a second rounder too but I think Mr. Higgins will forgive me for leaving him out of the discussion. As you indicated, without the addition of foregin players to the draft board, Sean Higgins still barely makes the cut. Certainly not lessening his accomplishment but also not a huge add to the program at large.
Completely agreed about the Frieder/Fisher-Beilein comparison. Having not been really around for the Johnny Orr era, I'll go ahead and say Beilein is the best basketball coach I've ever personally watched at Michigan.
My comment on Rumeal shooting free throws was a little tounge in cheek as he was basically atrocious (like you pointed out). That was more an excuse for me to post what remains one of my all time favorite sports photos, or at least the closest version I could find. I seem to remember one that was actually in black and white, taken from behind, and showed a much more clear image of the scoreboard/clock. That one is burned into my mind but I couldn't locate it on the interwebs.
|3 years 27 weeks ago||Also, don't forget...||
The 1989 team had three first round draft picks. Not saying the current team does or does not but that is a pretty ridiculous stat when you think about it. Of course they weren't the only team stacked that year. They had to get by the Flyin' Illini in the Final Four...

Weren't some of the media outlets discussing this last week? |3 years 32 weeks ago||I think you are pretty on point here||
To answer your questions near the end of your post, no and yes. I don't think this Ohio team would beat Alabama on a neutral field. I do think they could beat ND at ND. Just like I believe we should have, but credit to ND for doing what they needed to win that game. I suspect if you look at the season so far for us, Ohio, and ND, and match that up with preseason expectations based on roster/schedule/coaching predictions, the only outlier in the bunch is ND sitting there with no losses.
I think this is about as even a matchup between us and Ohio since the 2006 game and I don't see wither team getting worse in the near future. If anything, both schools are going to keep incrementally moving up in the rankings and this matchup is going to have serios national implications again.
I think we are at the very beginnings of the next great arms race between the schools and I look forward to the ride.

|4 years 9 weeks ago||Speaking as a prosecutor||
Speaking as a prosecutor here, if you haven't lost a case, you haven't tried any. I don't know a single state prosecutor with a perfect record. Most I know can't even count how many times they've lost. The system is set up for volume so it's hard to count the wins too. all you know is that you've tried a ton of cases in a short period of time.
Sometimes, your case just sucks. That doesn't mean you are allowed to shut it down. If I remember right from my time in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County receives a lot of funding for its hard stance on domestic violence and I believe there was a domestic violence aspect to this case (real or imagined). I'm going to guess that the prosecutor didn't have an option of dropping the case so it either had to be pled out or tried. If Furman can't take the plea deal and stay on the team, he can tell the state to pound sand and demand a trial. The prosecutors then put the case on and couldn't meet the burden. State loses, NG for Furman. Prosecutor picks up the next file and moves on. Happens all the time.
Believe it or not, the system worked. Prosecutors put on their evidence, the accused put on a defense, and the trier of fact found that the burden of proof was not met. End of story.
