|1 year 16 weeks ago||Thanks for this discussion. I||
Thanks for this discussion. I love looking ahead, even while enjoying another March. A few randomly ordered thoughts:
-I think Mitch could be tempted to jump due to age. Even as a second rounder, he starts his NBA clock sooner, which gets him to a potential second contract sooner. If he's healthy enough for pre-draft workouts, he could even end up as the ideal candidate for a team like the Spurs late in the first.
-I disagree that we need to hit a home run with PG in 2015. PG is a luxury until the 2016 class due to the depth on the roster. To get a true blue chip point, they will likely need to see a faster path to playing time than a potential Jr. Walton/Sr. Spike depth chart. Of course, things change. Walton could make the leap in year 2. And Michigan is still recruiting Brunson, even if (according to Sam Webb) they've slowed their recruitment of other 2015 points.
-Completely agree that we need a talented big in 2015. I hope Diamond Stone has continued to watch closely after his visit last year, because there's an opportunity for quick playing time here.
-I have to think that Nik is gone. His draft stock will likely never be higher, and I don't think we can discount the impact of seeing Glenn and Mitch come back, only to have their draft stock fall. We should enjoy every one of these last 9 games ;)
|1 year 22 weeks ago||In general, I roll my eyes at||
In general, I roll my eyes at about 90% of references to "Michigan Men" made on WTKA and elsewhere. The phrase obviously had meaning at some point, and there are obvious exceptions where that meaning holds true - the work with Mott sticks out.
But the phrase now more than ever seems to be a bit pro forma, based more upon performance on the field or star rating of a recent recruit.
Regardless of what the title means anymore, if the allegations here are true, then more than one person should give up their claim to it.

In additon to the other quotes mentioned, I found these interesting:

--Will run the ball;
--His philosophy is consistent with that of Hoke or else he wouldn't be here;
--Could see drastically different formations from week to week, depending upon what is best against a particular D;
--Need to put QBs in as close to game situations as possible before Saturdays;
--Players need to be self-starters off the field given the limitations on time with coaches;
--Minimize penalties on offense and negative plays - no presnap penalies, loss of yardage plays, sacks;
--Impressed with the young talent on the roster;
--Green, Dawson, Morris called out specifically as examples of the talent on the team that he recruited at Bama.

I think the assumption is that Fitzgerald is purple 'til he retires, but I'll be interested to see what happens if UT or USC backs a armored truck up to Bill O'Brien after another successful season at PSU. Either one of those athletic departments could absorb his buyout without a second thought. And - despite his sentimental spot in Happy Valley - I think he'd be crazy not to at least consider a chance at college football royalty.

Absolutely. I'm hoping that once Funchess gets healthy, he can serve as the complement to Gallon. That said, it's pretty impressive to see Chesson's downfield blocking. If he's not yet a viable receiving threat, at least he's still looking for ways to contribute.

De'Veon has now come in for some serious praise in the MGo-Preview materials, highlighted by Brian's prediction that he'll be the #2 back by the end of the season (but also in Ace's predictions above).
Is there recent insider scuttlebutt that suggests that he has been more impressive than Green or Johnson, or is this just an appreciation for Smith's game? (Interesting take either way; just wondering if I have missed something insidery.)

Sam Webb, during today's recruiting roundup, attributed the recent recruitment of several SAM-types to information that has not yet been made public. (I'm paraphrasing.)

There are programs that recruit well but don't develop players during their time on campus. There are programs that develop players in good college players, but don't bring in the big time recruits and are eventually exposed. With Beilein and this staff, M has the chance to become one of those teams that both recruits high level players and maximizes their potential. This is BIG.
|3 years 41 weeks ago||I don't think we'd need||
I don't think he would necessarily need to see another commit for the depth chart to give him trouble. Michigan has got two of the top tackles (Manguson and Kalis, even if he projects at guard), an in-state sleeper like Braden, and -- if rumors are true -- one or two more OL coming in for this class. I think Elmer (and Diamond, for that matter) are looking for opportunities to play early.
|3 years 41 weeks ago||I guess I can understand it||
I guess I can understand it somewhat. With the OL class in 2012, he was facing stiff competition to see the field early. Tough to lose him, but I'd rather he leave the state if he isn't going blue.

I have no problem with the staff choosing Pipkins over Schutt, if that's indeed what happened. While it may be a nice confirmatory measure, I sure hope the staff doesn't recruit based upon a third party star system. Besides, the two are ranked so close that placing one over the other is likely subjective anyway. The unfortunate consequence is that Schutt could end up at Penn State or Wisconsin.

I understand the sentiment of the post (2009-10 was an effing waste) and I agree that the short-term trajectory is downward, but most of the points in this post were just as relevant two days ago. I mean, even with the departure of Manny and Peedi, LLP was not going to be Demetrius Calip.
If the opinion of some in April was "we're in for a tough 2010-11, but 'in Beilein we trust,'" that opinion should not have changed. It's essentially the same "scrappy", "hard-nosed", "gym rat", "couldn't touch the square with a step ladder" team it was always going to be, along with the same hope (or lack thereof) for the future.
I, for one, will wait for Brundidge's decommit post before I panic.

|5 years 30 weeks ago||Warren leaving has no impact...||
As I understand it, if Warren leaves, it has no impact on this year's class. You can take 25 kids per recruiting class, and you cannot exceed an overall number of 85 scholarships. At present, we are so far below 85 (71 rings a bell) due to the attrition -- and that's before graduations -- that the full 25 will still keep us under 85 overall.
The question that remains to be answered is whether we can exceed 25 by having some kids enroll early. In that case, I've heard it said that they would count against last year's class (which, not including Witty, had 21, right?) instead of this year's.
So, if that is indeed the case, we could stash 3 early entrants (and Witty) in last year's class bringing this year's total to 28.
Of course, no one is certain of the new rules (or even if they are "new"), so what the hell do I know.
PS--I really hope this doesn't portend bad news from Josh Furman.
PPS--Yes, there are enough caveats in this post to choke a lawyer... by design. It is as much as question as a comment.

When I read it the first time, I had the same thoughts. But "location" could be just as much a criticism of Blacksburg as compared to Ann Arbor.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||What I saw that gives me confidence...||
* We have a top tier player that can take over late in games, despite having an off day overall.
* When hitting from outside, this team can play with anyone.
* #0 looks to have taken "the leap" between his freshman and sophomore years. Wow.
* Morris' ball skills look to be greatly improved over other point options last year.
* Despite my frustration with LLP as the primary ballhandler, he acquitted himself quite nicely with his outside shooting.
* I don't expect this team to suffer from the free throw stripe.
* We're now 1-0 against probable tournament teams, if one game is at all indicative of Creighton's team. I doubt the MVC has a better team to offer up.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||Decent, yes.||
But based upon precedent, 16th is not a "good" recruiting class at Michigan.
I fully understand that Rodriguez recruits areas that are considered undervalued by recruiting sites (Smurf Backs and Slot Ninjas come to mind), but on the defensive side of the ball, they are recruiting the same players as the other elite programs in the country. And with a full class of 25, to have a ranking in the mid- to low-teens means simply that the average recruit is not thought of as highly as previous classes. Of course they can be wrong, but I think Brian and others have done a lot of work to show that recruit rankings are a reasonable predictor of success.
Christian was a nice grab. And adding a couple more from the Jefferson, Parker, Grimes, Furman, etc. bunch will help as well.
I also hope -- given the staff's experience at West Virginia and their dedication to recruting the deep South -- that they are more adept at uncovering gems previously overlooked. Carvin Johnson was unranked anywhere when they signed him earlier this month, and now he's seen as a rising 3 star. Cornelius seems to fit that model as well.
|5 years 31 weeks ago||Carvin Johnson||
I'm sure it has been posted here somewhere before, but it bears repeating that Carvin Johnson has been given a three-star ranking by Scout. Rivals still has Johnson unranked. (Recall that Johnson was unranked by both sites at the time of his signing earlier this month.)
|5 years 33 weeks ago||The takeaway from this...||
Bill Martin, at least in this instance, acted like an asshole.
An employee of the University attempted to do their job, and Martin pulled a "Do you know who I am??" Let's not explain this away by holding the students to our standard of Michigan fandom. This job is probably not seen by them as an opportunity for hero-worship; they are likely just trying to pay for school. They didn't deserve this.
If this story had come out about Dantonio, Tressell, or even Carr, we'd have been nursing our wounded pride with 100+ posts of pure glee. Let's hold our guys to the same standard.
As an aside, the two reported incidents occurred during/after a) the signature win of this season, and b) an enormous blowout victory. Could you imagine if he was in a bad mood?

I crossed paths with Woodson outside West Quad as a Freshman in '96, but it all went downhill from there.
Lived across the hall and was friendly with Demetrius Smith (who roomed with Ray Jackson) in West Quad: both kicked off the team.
Frequently ran into William Peterson (now Will James of the Lions), who spent a lot of time with Smith and Jackson and lived in the basement level in West Quad (pretty sure this is where the infamous stripper robbery occurred): kicked off the team.
Had Bio-Anthro (everyone deserves to take an easy class now and then) with DeWayne Patmon and Patrick McNall: underachieved and transferred, respectively, IIRC.
Needless to say, I don't plan on showing up for too many Victors Walks.

Besides, it seems unlikely that Brian would half-ass a quick google-stalk of potential replacements. And this post -- in three hours -- would be 2005-Henne-vs.-OSU-esque.

That he's not leaving until next September would suggest that the NCAA investigation had nothing to do with this. Retirements in shame are normally immediate and intended to allow the university to move on post-haste.
This seems designed to (a) ensure that the stadium project is completed on time and under budget, (b) ensure solid fiscal planning for the next large-scale projects (baskeball practice facility, Crisler?), and (c) allow for a high-profile celebration of his tenure during the UConn home opener (his last day on the job).

This whole "airing of dirty laundry in the press" is bush league. Never in my life could I have guessed -- when comparing the football and basketball programs -- that football would be the drama queen.
|5 years 39 weeks ago||Whether he is taking credit||
Whether he is taking credit for the drop, taunting, etc., it is self-aggrandizing. Maybe I don't completely understand the psyche of being on an island play after play. But having been humbled by several receivers now, I'd like to see BooBoo save the demonstrative gestures for truly good plays.
If it really is what he needs to get himself in mental shape to play, then so be it. I'll still want him off my lawn, but I'll understand why he's there.
But I have a hard time remembering a corner that talked so much after every play. Even the great Charles Woodson -- who loved himself long before we did -- didn't do it after every incomplete pass.

So shifting the line from -1 to +3.5 is some sort of super secret psych out by Vegas?

Too many questions. My head is spinning.

|5 years 40 weeks ago||Until the recent regional||
Until the recent regional trade-off with ESPN2 and the emergence of the BTN, DC frequently received some awful ACC "rivalry" game (usually featuring Clemson) while the rest of the country was watching The Game. Those were dark days.
|5 years 40 weeks ago||All of them.||
All of the Alumni Club locations will be playing every game, regardless of network. The Sparty game will definitely be on, and you'll need to get there early to get a seat. Alumni Club viewings of rivalry games are heavily attended in DC.
BTW, to clarify, you do not need to be a member of the Alumni Club to attend one of the games sponsored by the group.
|5 years 40 weeks ago||Yes. ESPN2.||
Depending upon where you are staying in DC, there are a number of places where the alumni club watches games.
Tommy Joe's in Bethesda also hosts the Michigan alumni club and features a slightly younger (and more Bethesda-y) crowd.
EDIT: I wasn't aware of the Michigan room at Buffalo Billiards that chally mentioned above, but I've watched a lot of sports there, and it is always a good time.
The Pourhouse/Top of the Hill are upstairs/downstairs bars in DC that historically have hosted the alumni group in DC (EDIT: But judging by bsb2002's comments below, it appears that they may no longer be an alumni group viewing location. Sad, if true.)
|5 years 40 weeks ago||Good to hear.||
The way I see it, we're playing true freshman right now out of necessity rather than preference. Eventually, we want to get this program back to a place where incoming freshman expect a year or two of development from the bench.
While it is a great recruiting tool for 17 and 18 year-olds to see freshman making an impact in front of 110,000 people, it is more a sign of lack of depth than open-mindedness. If an eventual 5-star quarterback can lead by example, accepting that he may not play immediately, it could do wonders when our depth charts return to their usual density of prospects.
|5 years 40 weeks ago||Agreed.||
While I'm annoyed by his yapping, we need to lay off Cissoko. We run the risk of giving him the full-on 'James Whitley' treatment.
|5 years 40 weeks ago||Always felt a little meh...||
I've felt meh about the cheer since I first heard it (the 97 season). So in that sense, I completely agree that it should be saved for the few moments where the significance of the win outweigh the meh.
But I also understand that damn near 75% of the undergrads on campus are experiencing their first nationally signficant football season. They don't have the "we always beat Penn State, regardless" or the "even if we go 8-4, we still beat the Buckeyes... regularly" context that some of us have as fans. So to them I'd say, "have at it."
|5 years 40 weeks ago||30-70 lbs?||
Campbell was listed at 320+ on most sites coming out of high school. So it's more likely that he outweighed most of his opponents by 80-130 lbs (rather than 30-70).
This only serves to strenghthen your point.

|5 years 40 weeks ago||Added bonus...||
This would have the added bonus of ensuring that everyone stayed for their senior season.
|5 years 40 weeks ago||Absolutely agree; however...||
The ND whining has been ridiculous. You get the sense that Michigan didn't get the memo that this season was supposed to see the real 'return to glory.'
Regardless of the whining, in this instance, ND was right on. I don't care that it hasn't been called in the past. I don't care that there wasn't a flag. I don't want the guys I root for throwing punches unless they were hit first. Mouton was out of line, and he should sit.
And, absolutely, this would have been better handled internally by Rodriguez. He drew a line in the sand at the Monday press conference when he said there would be no punishment, and there was no need to draw that line. Like another poster stated, he could have simply demurred and left it to an internal review.
You have to wonder if his frustration with criticism of his practice habits, his business practices, his mortgage, etc. merged with the criticism of the sportsmanship of one of his players. Because his response was peculiar. The former three were nuanced and nit-picky; the latter was a very valid criticism.
The best result of this situation: Fitzgerald is phenomenal on Saturday, and we're left with either greater depth, or a position battle.
Apologies for the long-windedness.
|5 years 41 weeks ago||I nominate Chase Daniel.||
If your metric is "number of times described using the term 'moxie'" then Chase Daniel seems an appropriate comparison.
Add to it that Daniel was generously listed as 6'1 or 6'0, could burn you on the ground, and seemed to will the Tigers to more wins than expected... it's perfect.
|5 years 41 weeks ago||I hope the Fightin' Creamsicles...||
I hope the Fightin' Creamsicles pull off the upset for two reasons: 1) to quiet, at least temporarily, the Tebow hype, and 2) to ensure that Kiffin and his antics get as big a stage as possible (a high profile win will provide that stage).
By the way, I agree with you about the "talk the talk, walk the walk" types; however, it has made it a bit difficult to watch Cissoko so far.
|5 years 41 weeks ago||I got the sense that Cissoko||
I got the sense that Cissoko was being asked to keep his receiver in front of him at all costs. He was breaking back -- even given his 10 yard cushions -- immediately at the snap.
Given his size, I hope BooBoo can morph into an Antoine Winfield type. Winfield got burned by a very few big receivers on jump balls. But for the most part he was always in position to play the ball; was strong enough for press coverage; and he hit like a mini-Marcus Ray.
But Cissoko has a way to go before he matches Winfield, even when comparing soph seasons.
|5 years 41 weeks ago||It was a cheap shot.||
After seeing that video, I agree that he should be sat for a half or a game. There's no place for that out there.
Almost as disturbing are the attempts to explain away the intent by guessing at the impact. If an Irish player had committed the same act, we'd be giving him the Robert Reynolds treatment.
