BTW, virtually no one other than Michigan and Auburn fans watched the game because at the same time was Miani's famous upset of Nebraska (when Nebraskia was considered possibly lthe greatest college team ever and went for two instead of one to tie and become the nat'l champ).

And you're totally right.  Also, Cal. is renovating its stadium this year and all home games will be played at AT&T Park in SF (where the Giants play; wonderful stad\ium for baseball,not football).  So, when he visits Cal, it won't be for an on-campus game.   Even if it was on-campus, the football atmosphere doesn't compare to A2.  That being said, Cal's a great school, with a beautiful campus.

It's like going on one of those free trips run by a time share place.  Enjoy three days in Hawaii on us!  Spend just six hours a day locked in a conference room with our sales team!

Arsenal haven't choked.  They don't spend the money that ManU, Chelsea and ManCity spend and, therefore,don't have the depth to handle the last third of the season with injuries, suspensions and the increased number of matches.  Don't confuse lack of depth with choking.

1.  Have you ever heard of someone giving free guest NCG tickets to a used car salesman that sold him the vehicle for market price?  Didn't think so.

When I was there, 1980-1984, it was at Lorch Hall. 

If DB wants Harbaugh or a top notch D coordinator, we should pay whatever is required.  If Bama can pay a fortune to Saban and his coordinators, why not M?   We have lots of rich alumni, the seventh largest university endowment, the football program pays for itself, etc.  I would be embarassed if we didn't get someone we really wanted over money.  Also, i cringe every time I hear that OSU has the best facilities in the Big Ten. 

We are a big time monied universtiy, so let's step up if he have to!

Additional questions:

1.  Does GERG go or the entire defensive staff?  If  just GERG, will M be able to get a top notch coordinator if he can't pick his own staff.

!A.  assuming the new coordinator picks is own staff, this means that the position coaches will be gone.  Because the position coaches recruit most of the players, will we lose recruits as a result of this?

2.   When does M make the move?  I would like us to use our 15 bowl practices to get ready for next year, but I doubt he can get a top-notch coordinator before the end of the bowl period.

I hate to be a sourpuss, but I can't enjoy ND's pain because I am in such pain from Saturday night.  (Okay, I can enjoy it a little!)

There's a great Ufer picture of him speaking before the 1/1/81 Rose Bowl--I think it was the last Michigan game he broadcasted (and Bo's first Rose Bowl win).  He's standing in the sun in shirtsleeves, everyone knew he was sick, and it was very touching.  Does anyone have a copy?

That's Correct.  My question  is: Is this a technique issue that should have been resolved through coaching.  He's had 1 1/2 seasons, two fall practices, and one spring practice to fix this.  Is this something curable through coaching or not?

I live in Northern Cal, went to law school here, and 40% of my classmates were Cal grads.  They are about the same intelligence-wise as my U-M classmates (although none of them will admit it). 

The reason I am commenting is your analogizing U-M/MSU to Cal/UCD is misplaced.  UCD students are far smarter than MSU students.  UCD students are not quite Cal level, but pretty good.  I think a better analogy would be U-M/MSU to Cal/CSU (California State Universities with a number of locations). 

I realize this is probably an esoteric contribution, but WTF, it's better than thinking about our linebackers and secondary!

If you haven't been, GO to M's next Rose Bowl.  The stadium, the mountains, the tailgating on the golf course, the tradition.  It's amazing and one of the places every College FB should visit.

That's good news because Woolfolk will ably replace Rogers, leaving Mouton, and, to a lesser extent, Ezeh (everyone seems to have a different view of Ezeh), as the only meaningful losses.

I don't understand why you are getting neg banged for this (unless it's the part about TF transferring).  I think DG is the second string because RR wants to use his bread and butter, the *run-oriented* spread, and DG is better for this than TF.  DG is faster and bigger.  If this were a pass oriented spread, such as ND, that would be a different story.  In short, as well as TF did as a natural freshman starting 12 games, RR has moved on to the QBs (DR and DG) that are best equipped to run that offense that RR wants to run.

That would explain why he scratches it so much.

Yes, when PSU jointed the Big Ten, the Conference set up the PSU-MSU game in the hope of developing a high quality competative rivalry along the lines of M-tOSU.  The Conference bypassed Iowa and Wisky,. which were more successful programs, at let MSU have a shot.

The result?  MSU went 4-13.  Justifiably, MSU has been dropped from a last-game-of-the- season marquee matchup and inserted into another phony rivalry with IU.

I want this to be the last game.  BTW, my completely uninformed hunch is that the last game won't be with Sparty, but against the other "big" team in our division, and tOSU will play its last game against the other "big" team in its division.  Thus, you will have:

M-Neb and tOSU-PSU

or

M-PSU and tOSU-Neb

They will probably set it up as a doubleheader.  A fabulous doubleheader, no doubt, but M-tOSU last game of the season *made* the Big 10 and should be kept.

I grew up in NY, but have lived in the Bay Area for 20 years.  The NY teams are still my teams.  Period.  I have no particular interst in the SF/Oakland teams--some I like and some I don't--no different than before I moved here.

Nor am I interested in Cal or Stanford.  I have *a lot* of friends who are Cal graduates and, although some are loyal fans, they (and Pac 10 fans in general) don't have near the intense connection that I have for mighty Meechigan.  In fact, I openly mock them when they refer to "The Big Game" (Cal and Stanford).  I call it "The Big Joke." 

The good news is that you don't have to adopt Dallas teams.  Between the BTN, websites such as this, online newspapers, pay per view, sports bars, etc., you can easily follow your hometown teams and see most if not all of their games.

I'll be sure not to accidentally turn into  the BTN while it's on.

BTW, for those who are interested in Finebaum, he is prominently mentioned in Rammer, Jammer, Yellow Hammer (don't remember the author), which is a book written by a guy who buys an RV and travels to all Bama games one season.  Not the most exciting book ever, but not bad if you want to get a bit of Bama flavor.

It's not that nobody cares about college sports, it's that there are no good college teams.  When St. John's is good in hoops, interest picks up.  Syracuse is not a big school and is hundreds of miles away.  Although they have plenty of alumni in tne NYC area, there are not enought to make cable systems want to pick up the BTN.

As for Rutgers, it is the State University of *NJ*.  Which means no one from NY State or CT cares about them.  The reason to offer Rutgers is not to "get the NY market", because you won't, but to get cable systems in NJ, which is a populous state.  Is it worth it to get NJ?   I don't know.

Lastly, Syracuse is culturally a terrible fit for the Big Ten.  It is known as a medicore school, is private, is relatively small, and, unlike Nebraska (also a small market), has no national following.   At least ND is an excellent school, has traditional ties to the Big Ten, and has a national following.  Of all schools rumored to join the Big Ten, I seriously object to Syracuse.  It's simply not Big Ten material.

Not to get too far off tangent, but Griese's run for first down on 3rd and 6 or 7ish late in the 4th Quarter of the '98 Rose Bowl is unforgetable.  One of the great plays in M sports since I started watching in the '70s.

Although the Rose Bowl is somewhat run down, the setting is so so so beautiful, that it's a great experience (even just for UCLA games). Going to the the Rose Bowl game itself is one of ten things every CFB fan should do. Especially, when M plays in it and wins it!

Football: My program and ticket from the 1979 M-Indiana game (the Anthony Carter TD on the last play game). I was a senior in High School, from out of state, it was my first game at M Stadium (as we called it then), and I knew that it was my destiny to enroll. I wanted to post a diary entry just before the Indiana game this year (30th anniversary), but didn't have 20 points.

I live in the Bay Area. I don't know why Cal reduced capacity. They are always at or near capacity.

Stanford, though, is a different story. They wildly expanded their stadium in the '80s to get the Super Bowl. Except for successful seasons or big games, there were often 20-30,000 (and sometimes more) empty seats. So they phased down to avoid empty stadium syndrome. Not so with Cal.

What have you been doing with your time? Talking about how great LT was (yet again)?

I get the feeling that many of the recruits visiting, especially those who have suddenly become interested in M during our recent implosion, have no real interested in committing to M, but couldn't turn down the opportunity to go to M-tOSU--one of the best, if not the best, rivalry in sports.

If we are going to bench Tate and basically roll the dice on the rest of the season, we should play Denard, make him throw, let him get experience, and let the chips fall where they may. Sheridan accomplishes nothing. However, my epinion is to stick with Tate and let him get max experience. It will pay dividends in the future.
