19 weeks 17 hours ago Dennis Bergkamp

Dennis and Denard are different.  Dennis was the epitome of the overused "sublime."  So many sublime goals.  Here is possiblly his most famous one:

26 weeks 3 days ago Nice

Very subtle.  I don't know whether everyone else missed it or just avoided it.

1 year 2 weeks ago The best advice!

I've lived in SF since 1990 and Serth is exactly right.

1 year 2 weeks ago If you believe AT&T...

you're a friggin' idiot.

1 year 23 weeks ago We scored on our first drive...but then

...notning.  Al Del Greco, who later played for the Packers kicked three field goals.  That was it.  Auburn let Markray catch that late ball and run out of time.  But, beating Ohio in A2 that season was great!

BTW, virtually no one other than Michigan and Auburn fans watched the game because at the same time was Miani's famous upset of Nebraska (when Nebraskia was considered possibly lthe greatest college team ever and went for two instead of one to tie and become the nat'l champ).

1 year 24 weeks ago Can't beat Tim B.

Best ever.

1 year 24 weeks ago 1. Beat Ohio

2,  Fuck Spurs.

1 year 31 weeks ago Thanks for keeping your cool and being helpful. nm.

1 year 31 weeks ago So...

Is it a watermelon, lime, or something else?

(Seriously, I appreciate your calm and rational responses.)

1 year 35 weeks ago You snooze, you lose...

1 year 40 weeks ago Live in SF

And you're totally right.  Also, Cal. is renovating its stadium this year and all home games will be played at AT&T Park in SF (where the Giants play; wonderful stad\ium for baseball, not football).  So, when he visits Cal, it won't be for an on-campus game.   Even if it was on-campus, the football atmosphere doesn't compare to A2.  That being said, Cal's a great school, with a beautiful campus.

1 year 42 weeks ago And they're waiting for what?

They have the evidence.

1 year 43 weeks ago It's like

It's like going on one of those free trips run by a time share place.  Enjoy three days in Hawaii on us!  Spend just six hours a day locked in a conference room with our sales team!

1 year 46 weeks ago Not to bitch, but...

WTF that he couldn't get ahold of anyone so that he could attend M's camp?

1 year 47 weeks ago Lame tech question

Does anyone know how I can download directly from WTKA's site and get the oodcast into itunes (so I can then transfer it to my ipod)?

Sorry for the lameness and TIA.

1 year 48 weeks ago Amazing

Four of the top 16 linebackers.  Amazing!

1 year 51 weeks ago Central defender yes, but

also a holding midfielder.  Song is inconsistent and they've not had a good one since Flamini.

1 year 51 weeks ago Appreciate Arsenal fans, too

BUT, see my comment above.  During the Fulham match today, the Arsenal supporters chanted "spend some money."

1 year 51 weeks ago Wrong

Arsenal haven't choked.  They don't spend the money that ManU, Chelsea and ManCity spend and, therefore, don't have the depth to handle the last third of the season with injuries, suspensions and the increased number of matches.  Don't confuse lack of depth with choking.

2 years 6 days ago Meet the new normal...

same as the old normal.

2 years 1 week ago Agreed. Plus two questions:

1.  Have you ever heard of someone giving free guest NCG tickets to a used car salesman that sold him the vehicle for market price?  Didn't think so.

2.  Have you ever heard of someone from Maryland or more than 200 miles away in Pennsylvania buying a used car from someone in Ohio for market price?  Didn't think so.

2 years 17 weeks ago Wow, tha's fugly

2 years 17 weeks ago No longer relevant. Move on.

2 years 17 weeks ago Keep RR *defensive* assistants? Are you stoned?

GERG for continuity?

2 years 19 weeks ago Extremely thought provoking response

I agree with Togaroga.  Do you have *reason* for "no" or is it obvious to someone like you who attended a beter university than me?  (I merely attended the University of Michigan.)

2 years 20 weeks ago When was that?

When I was there, 1980-1984, it was at Lorch Hall.

2 years 23 weeks ago On a serious note

If DB wants Harbaugh or a top notch D coordinator, we should pay whatever is required.  If Bama can pay a fortune to Saban and his coordinators, why not M?   We have lots of rich alumni, the seventh largest university endowment, the football program pays for itself, etc.  I would be embarassed if we didn't get someone we really wanted over money.  Also, i cringe every time I hear that OSU has the best facilities in the Big Ten.

We are a big time monied universtiy, so let's step up if he have to!

2 years 24 weeks ago Yes, very classy

Yes, very classy...Woody (the epitome of unclassy) must be rolling over in his grave.

2 years 24 weeks ago Additional questions

Additional questions:

1.  Does GERG go or the entire defensive staff?  If  just GERG, will M be able to get a top notch coordinator if he can't pick his own staff.

!A.  assuming the new coordinator picks is own staff, this means that the position coaches will be gone.  Because the position coaches recruit most of the players, will we lose recruits as a result of this?

2.   When does M make the move?  I would like us to use our 15 bowl practices to get ready for next year, but I doubt he can get a top-notch coordinator before the end of the bowl period.

2 years 26 weeks ago Yes, that was a great  drive

Yes, that was a great  drive until it was stopped by penalties (Lewan clip and Hemingway face mask) that had nothing to do with Denard.  I didn't understand why RR put Tate back in for the next series.

2 years 28 weeks ago I hate to be a sourpuss

I hate to be a sourpuss, but I can't enjoy ND's pain because I am in such pain from Saturday night.  (Okay, I can enjoy it a little!)

2 years 28 weeks ago So easy...

It's so easy to demonize anyone who is an alumnus and who is dissatisfied with this as a "blue hair".  I hope you have great success going through the rest of your life personally attacking anyone who disagrees with you.  You would be a perfect candidate for congress.

Personally, I have supported RR from the beginning and am torn as to what Brandon should do, but, if I conclude that RR should go,  I shouldn't be personally attacked.

2 years 28 weeks ago There's a great Ufer picture

There's a great Ufer picture of him speaking before the 1/1/81 Rose Bowl--I think it was the last Michigan game he broadcasted (and Bo's first Rose Bowl win).  He's standing in the sun in shirtsleeves, everyone knew he was sick, and it was very touching.  Does anyone have a copy?

2 years 30 weeks ago Too beautiful

IMHO, Too beautifulof a place to hate.

2 years 30 weeks ago That's Correct. My question is

That's Correct.  My question  is: Is this a technique issue that should have been resolved through coaching.  He's had 1 1/2 seasons, two fall practices, and one spring practice to fix this.  Is this something curable through coaching or not?

2 years 30 weeks ago Helloooooooooooo

Heisman!

2 years 30 weeks ago With our defense

"FWIW, People have been talking up Demens's abilities in run defense and criticizing his coverage. I haven't seen much either way. The reports of excellent play in the spring game didn't come from me; even when I watched the tape I didn't see much good or bad from him."

With our defense, if he doesn't do "much bad" then he's good, right?

2 years 31 weeks ago No.

They realize that U-M and Cal are equivalent academically, it's just an ongoing, good natured, joke that they won't admit it.  And, yeah, there are a few ignoramuses too, but not many.

BTW, I'm in Sausalito, where are you?

2 years 31 weeks ago Poor comparison

I live in Northern Cal, went to law school here, and 40% of my classmates were Cal grads.  They are about the same intelligence-wise as my U-M classmates (although none of them will admit it).

The reason I am commenting is your analogizing U-M/MSU to Cal/UCD is misplaced.  UCD students are far smarter than MSU students.  UCD students are not quite Cal level, but pretty good.  I think a better analogy would be U-M/MSU to Cal/CSU (California State Universities with a number of locations).

I realize this is probably an esoteric contribution, but WTF, it's better than thinking about our linebackers and secondary!

2 years 31 weeks ago A truly magical place

If you haven't been, GO to M's next Rose Bowl.  The stadium, the mountains, the tailgating on the golf course, the tradition.  It's amazing and one of the places every College FB should visit.

2 years 32 weeks ago They don't already know?

News to me.

2 years 32 weeks ago WRONG.

"their offense can put up points with the best of them."

OUR offense is the "best of them" and their offense doesn't compare.

2 years 33 weeks ago I have ESPN U in HD, but not BTN

Sad, isn't it?

2 years 33 weeks ago That may very well be

That may very well be, but they could have held him back unless and until then and not burned his redshirt unless he was actually needed.

2 years 33 weeks ago Except

Except, with Denard and Tate ahead of him, they could have red shirted him this year and given him game experience next year.  That way, he'd have game experience and two years of eligability after Denard graduates.  I'd rather have him as a two year starter with two years of back up duty than have him as a one year starter with three years of backup duty.

So far, they *haven't* needed him on the field because Tate looks fine.  Of course, if they really needed him because both Denard and Tate weren't playing well and/or injured, they could have burned his redshirt then.

2 years 34 weeks ago Not only

Not only Clockgate  II, but Non-existent Clip I.

2 years 34 weeks ago That's what I was thinking

They blew the whistle before Sparty recovererd.  Stupid to use a challenge for this.

2 years 34 weeks ago Yes.

Yes.  Ridiculous.  The only defensive player to win a Heisman.

How will they be able to justify defensive players ahead of Charles in Big Ten icons?  They won't.

2 years 35 weeks ago That's good news

That's good news because Woolfolk will ably replace Rogers, leaving Mouton, and, to a lesser extent, Ezeh (everyone seems to have a different view of Ezeh), as the only meaningful losses.

2 years 35 weeks ago I don't understand

I don't understand why you are getting neg banged for this (unless it's the part about TF transferring).  I think DG is the second string because RR wants to use his bread and butter, the *run-oriented* spread, and DG is better for this than TF.  DG is faster and bigger.  If this were a pass oriented spread, such as ND, that would be a different story.  In short, as well as TF did as a natural freshman starting 12 games, RR has moved on to the QBs (DR and DG) that are best equipped to run that offense that RR wants to run.

2 years 35 weeks ago The bedbugs must have attacked his left shoulder...

That would explain why he scratches it so much.

2 years 35 weeks ago Re: Total exposures

Denard's risk of injury during passing situations is less than in pro style offenses.  He's not in a pocket for an extended period where he can be blindsided or otherwise buried by the rush.

2 years 35 weeks ago RIP: Jerry & Brent.

nm.

2 years 35 weeks ago Slight correction

Slight correction, To your statement, "he is thinking "gee given the apocalyptic secondary situation I have, i'd much rather give up 8 yard under routes than 70 yard bombs over the top of my ridiculously inexperienced secondary", add to the end, "like last year."

2 years 35 weeks ago Shouldn't there been someone else back there

Shouldn't there been someone else back there in case something like this happened?  Even if Gordon had defended it better, it could have turned into a jump ball.  Shouldn't someone else be back there?

2 years 35 weeks ago Good news, bad news

I'll start with the bad news:  Gordon was also responsible for the ND TD to Smith at the beginning of the second half.  There were two receviers in his area and he went *between* them.

The good news is that he was a receiver until spring practice, this was his second game, and these were technical mistalkes that can be corrected thorugh coaching and film, not a demonstration of lack of speed, strength or athletic ability.  By next year he should be solid.

On another point, as Brian pointed out, the CBs played well.   Floyd did not do as much as I feared.

2 years 36 weeks ago Put me down

for "not."

2 years 36 weeks ago Yes, when PSU

Yes, when PSU jointed the Big Ten, the Conference set up the PSU-MSU game in the hope of developing a high quality competative rivalry along the lines of M-tOSU.  The Conference bypassed Iowa and Wisky,. which were more successful programs, at let MSU have a shot.

The result?  MSU went 4-13.  Justifiably, MSU has been dropped from a last-game-of-the- season marquee matchup and inserted into another phony rivalry with IU.

2 years 38 weeks ago Agreed

I want this to be the last game.  BTW, my completely uninformed hunch is that the last game won't be with Sparty, but against the other "big" team in our division, and tOSU will play its last game against the other "big" team in its division.  Thus, you will have:

M-Neb and tOSU-PSU

or

M-PSU and tOSU-Neb

They will probably set it up as a doubleheader.  A fabulous doubleheader, no doubt, but M-tOSU last game of the season *made* the Big 10 and should be kept.

That's got some potential!

2 years 38 weeks ago No way!

I grew up in NY, but have lived in the Bay Area for 20 years.  The NY teams are still my teams.  Period.  I have no particular interst in the SF/Oakland teams--some I like and some I don't--no different than before I moved here.

Nor am I interested in Cal or Stanford.  I have *a lot* of friends who are Cal graduates and, although some are loyal fans, they (and Pac 10 fans in general) don't have near the intense connection that I have for mighty Meechigan.  In fact, I openly mock them when they refer to "The Big Game" (Cal and Stanford).  I call it "The Big Joke."

The good news is that you don't have to adopt Dallas teams.  Between the BTN, websites such as this, online newspapers, pay per view, sports bars, etc., you can easily follow your hometown teams and see most if not all of their games.

2 years 39 weeks ago Link?

I'll be sure not to accidentally turn into  the BTN while it's on.

Mr. Flood's Party.  Right across from the Fleet and a couple of doors down from Parthenon Gyro.   *The best bar in Ann Arbor when I went to M 1980-1984.*  Awesome live blues, dark beer, salty peanuts in shell.  *The best*; only the Chance and Rick's were even close.  Closed around '86.

2 years 44 weeks ago Nope

I can't root for them under any circumstances.  The recruting advantage that they would obtain from winning the NC would greatly outweigh the benefit to Michigan from being part of the conference that delivered the National Champion.

BTW, for those who are interested in Finebaum, he is prominently mentioned in Rammer, Jammer, Yellow Hammer (don't remember the author), which is a book written by a guy who buys an RV and travels to all Bama games one season.  Not the most exciting book ever, but not bad if you want to get a bit of Bama flavor.

2 years 49 weeks ago I grew up in NY

It's not that nobody cares about college sports, it's that there are no good college teams.  When St. John's is good in hoops, interest picks up.  Syracuse is not a big school and is hundreds of miles away.  Although they have plenty of alumni in tne NYC area, there are not enought to make cable systems want to pick up the BTN.

As for Rutgers, it is the State University of *NJ*.  Which means no one from NY State or CT cares about them.  The reason to offer Rutgers is not to "get the NY market", because you won't, but to get cable systems in NJ, which is a populous state.  Is it worth it to get NJ?   I don't know.

Lastly, Syracuse is culturally a terrible fit for the Big Ten.  It is known as a medicore school, is private, is relatively small, and, unlike Nebraska (also a small market), has no national following.   At least ND is an excellent school, has traditional ties to the Big Ten, and has a national following.  Of all schools rumored to join the Big Ten, I seriously object to Syracuse.  It's simply not Big Ten material.

Not to get too far off tangent, but Griese's run for first down on 3rd and 6 or 7ish late in the 4th Quarter of the '98 Rose Bowl is unforgetable.  One of the great plays in M sports since I started watching in the '70s.

Although the Rose Bowl is somewhat run down, the setting is so so so beautiful, that it's a great experience (even just for UCLA games). Going to the the Rose Bowl game itself is one of ten things every CFB fan should do. Especially, when M plays in it and wins it!

Football: My program and ticket from the 1979 M-Indiana game (the Anthony Carter TD on the last play game). I was a senior in High School, from out of state, it was my first game at M Stadium (as we called it then), and I knew that it was my destiny to enroll. I wanted to post a diary entry just before the Indiana game this year (30th anniversary), but didn't have 20 points.

Basketball: Ticket from 1989 Championship game, M vs. Seton Hall.

3 years 14 weeks ago +1

They were the *best* unis. BTW, we won the national championship wearing those unis.

3 years 16 weeks ago Not exactly

I live in the Bay Area. I don't know why Cal reduced capacity. They are always at or near capacity.

Stanford, though, is a different story. They wildly expanded their stadium in the '80s to get the Super Bowl. Except for successful seasons or big games, there were often 20-30,000 (and sometimes more) empty seats. So they phased down to avoid empty stadium syndrome. Not so with Cal.

3 years 22 weeks ago Tenuta

Would it be worth it to go after Tenuta if ND cuts him loose? I know, I know, I know, that would be four D Coordinators in four years, but he might be that much better than GERG (although ND's D sucked this year). Just askin'.

3 years 23 weeks ago Vinopal

If Vinopal is a first team all Ohio safety, how come he didn't receive more offers and more prestigious offers? You can say that he's slow, but if he wasn't good, he wouldn't be a first team all Ohio safety. Right? Wrong?

3 years 24 weeks ago Chris Stewart

Is he graduating or leaving? He was ND's best OL last night. Really excellent. Also, if Claussen leaves, who is expected to be next year's QB and what are his strengths and weaknesses?

3 years 25 weeks ago Purdue

Blowing 14 point halftime lead at home. Sad, sad, sad. If we had won, we'd be bowl bound and get 15 more practices.

3 years 25 weeks ago Not blaming them?

You mean they had something better to do than supporting their team against hated rivals during a time of near crisis? If that's what you're selling, I'm not buying.

3 years 25 weeks ago Sorry, but

you're not running over anyone when your offense produced only 14 points. Fourteen points after five turnovers is even worse.

3 years 25 weeks ago Best game of the day

31-28 with 7:00 left.

3 years 25 weeks ago I hope I am wrong, but...

I get the feeling that many of the recruits visiting, especially those who have suddenly become interested in M during our recent implosion, have no real interested in committing to M, but couldn't turn down the opportunity to go to M-tOSU--one of the best, if not the best, rivalry in sports.

3 years 26 weeks ago If we only had to play offense

and not defense, then this post would make more sense.

3 years 26 weeks ago I hate to be negative, but...

...yes it can. BG gone. Stevie gone. Warren maybe gone. Our two or three of our best players gone. On the bright side (which is unfortunately greatly outweighed by the dark side), Roh, Campbell and Martin should get even better.

3 years 26 weeks ago 3 transitioning into 4

I'm frustrated, angry, and depressed. Unfortunately, it will be *years* before we have a defense that will allow us to meaningfully compete.

I'm okay with the O because Tate is good and will get better, and it seems we have competent replacements for Rage and Brown. Maybe we'll move Denard around so he can really make something happen. Hopefully some of the freshmen and redshirts can step up on the O line next season.

In the meantime, some M supporters, fanned by the media, by questioning whether RR should be fired after this year or next year, are destroying whatever chance we have of getting new recruits that will allow us to have a competent D. Would you want to sign with M now with return of the talk about firing RR? Also, if RR is fired after two or even three years, do you think we will be able to find a top notch replacement? So, I am very angry at M fans that are inadvertently sabotaging the future of the program by questioning RR's future.

I never thought I'd see us in this position.

3 years 26 weeks ago You have inspired me!

When we were 4-0, I switched from Crest to Colgate and our season went south. Now, you have inspired me to switch back to Crest. We will definitely win out!

3 years 27 weeks ago Excellent Point

If we had a killer defense, we probably would be looking at a two loss season--even with a freshman QB, shitty OL, etc.

So, the D is the only one big hole to fill. Of course, that hole reminds me of the Grand Canyon...

3 years 28 weeks ago Not only that

Not only that, but our best O and D players are named Brandon.

3 years 28 weeks ago Bracken and Ali Haji Sheik

Killer kicking/punting combo! M was known for having terrible kickers and punters before then.

3 years 29 weeks ago You're nuts!

If we are going to bench Tate and basically roll the dice on the rest of the season, we should play Denard, make him throw, let him get experience, and let the chips fall where they may. Sheridan accomplishes nothing. However, my epinion is to stick with Tate and let him get max experience. It will pay dividends in the future.

3 years 29 weeks ago Some things never change

This was exactly the case when I enrolled in 1980 (during another recession).

3 years 30 weeks ago Fuck them

Fuck them. They haven't exactly been sympathetic towards us.

"Some even had watery eyes". Because their team lost a football game, not to a bitter rival, not with the MNC on the line, etc.? Maybe they should try to elevate their emotional control beyond that of a 12 year old.

OTOH, maybe your are joking and I'm not getting it...

3 years 30 weeks ago I despise them

I despise them for '97. Always will. Have been loving their recent struggles. Karma, baby!

3 years 30 weeks ago Envy

You don't understand it? It's pure and simple envy. Some football years are better than others for all teams. But, *every year*, fans of tOSU and MSU know that M is indisputably a vastly superior school, they couldn't get in, and you did. End of discussion.

3 years 30 weeks ago Those calls were NOT horrible

They were disgraceful.

3 years 30 weeks ago Schiano: what an idiot

I'm watching. He turned down M for *this*? What an idiot. I'm glad he didn't accept because he's an idiot (BTW, this is called a tautology).

3 years 31 weeks ago Absolutely

You're absolutely right. Let him play for a quarter, lead two or three TD drives (hopefully, by handing off to Minor or throwing dump passes to Brown), and get his confidence back. Then DR the rest of the way. While letting Sheridan or Coner play a little would be nice for sentimental reasons, it's more important that DR gets max playing time.

3 years 31 weeks ago "RR said he has to be cleared by Wed. to play Saturday."

Interesting in light of the week long media obsession as to whether Tebow would play against LSU. "He won't be cleared until Saturday, if at all," "Game time decision," etc. BTW, did anyone believe that he *wasn't* going to play?

Sorry about the OTishness.

3 years 31 weeks ago Tate should definitely start

Tate should definitely start. If he doesn't, then we have a distracting controversy. I would imagine that even those who think Denard, not Tate, is the better long term QB for the spread, he's not the better QB now. That being said, I hope Denard gets plenty of PT against Delaware State. Maybe Tate will get a big first half lead and Denard can play the whole second half.

3 years 31 weeks ago I agree with you all the way...

I agree with you all the way...You didn't mention Justin Turner as a guy you would like to see playing. Just oversight or intentional? His redshirt is burned due to special teams play, correct?

3 years 31 weeks ago Who's playing?

Without naming names, I might have a dog in this fight. Who's playing?

3 years 31 weeks ago It's on.

3 years 31 weeks ago "I think the last time

"I think the last time Michigan wore white pants was in the Bo era, 70s maybe."

I've been following M since '73. I don't remember white pants, but I could be wrong. Tell me more.

It won't create a national crisis (instead, our inside linebackers and secondary are a national crisis), but I don't like the idea.

3 years 32 weeks ago I don't feel any better about our D

I don't feel any better about our D. My feeling is that Sparty could have scored more if it needed to (or, more accurately, thought it needed to).

Let the negs begin...

3 years 32 weeks ago GERG should be an excellent recruiter

GERG should be an excellent recruiter. Thirty years of experience, NFL, other big time college programs, etc. In addition, you would think that some of these undecided blue chippers would now be more attracted to M than ever. The team is clearly on the rise and there is an opportunity to play right away or at least early.
That being said, I have heard that the position coach is more important in recruiting than the coordinator, but I am not a recruiting guru. If so, and there is a public outcry to dump Hopson, it could be a problem for LB recruits. The gurus on this board may want to comment on this.

3 years 32 weeks ago Agreed. More specifically, we couldn't run on them.

Agreed. More specifically, we couldn't run on them. That was the difference. Once they knew they could stop the run, they pressured Forcier.

3 years 32 weeks ago Obviously

Obviously, one Sparty program that is not "CONSTANTALLY" (their spelling, not mine) getting closer to UM's is spelling. Posts like this constantly exhibit their inferior knowledge of even basic spelling.

3 years 33 weeks ago I think the tackling has gotten worse each game since WMU.

GERG has no control over the lack of speed, talent and depth, but the tackling has gotten worse since each game since WMU. If they can improve on that for Sparty they will have a much better chance of winning.

3 years 33 weeks ago David Harris comes up big

From ESPN:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After looking vulnerable for the first time this season, the New York Jets' top-ranked defense came up big in the end.

David Harris had an interception and a big sack on consecutive drives, and Mark Sanchez threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Jets stayed undefeated by holding on for a 24-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
