Steinbrenner consistently misapplied football culture to baseball. This was usually evidenced by his frequent tantrums following a singular loss or his clubhouse peptalks. Both excusable in and of themselves, but not so much over a 162+ game season. |

Winovich is a 3-star according to Rivals and 247 and he sounds like a smart kid - a solid addition to our depth at LB. But can someone tell me why we are breathless over a 3-star? Have guys like Green and Peppers spoiled me? Or is he rated higher or received a late bump that hasn't shown up on the web pages. |

Someone upthread posted that folks favor the QB of their campus years. That leaves me with Demetrius Brown, Michael Taylor and Elvis Grbac. At the time, I was always happy when Taylor played because he seemed to facilitate Bo's conservative game plan as an option QB and was accurate enough to lob the occasional bomb to McMurtry and Calloway. Unfortunately my man couldn't stay healthy and that might have ulitmately cost us in '89. |

| 4 weeks 1 day ago | Good point re McHale. He |
Good point re McHale. He went through a period from '87-'90 where he was damn near unstoppable when he had the ball within 10' of the rim. The Pistons made it hard for Bird to set up in the post or step outside b/o Rodman and the years of playoff battles were taking a toll on his back. Parish was always a weak link against stronger line-ups. It makes me shudder to think what an optimized Len Bias could have done for that team. |
| 4 weeks 2 days ago | There's much we can debate, |
There's much we can debate, but Bird was correct - the Celtics had a chance to repeat and the Piston's didn't. Whether or not Bird was deserved of the "hype" was irrelevant. His teams won three (3) NBA titles and we can only find a handful of players in the 80's that can claim more success. Moreover, I have trouble believing that Bird won three (3) MVP's (not to mention a shitload of other honorariums) based on "hype." Listen, I'm a rare fan of both franchises for a variety of uninteresting reasons. IMHO, it was the greatest period of pitched battle in NBA history (Celtics/Sixers, Celtics/Lakers, Celtics/Pistons, Pistons/Bulls). For whatever reason David Stern wasn't enamoured with any of it. Hopefully we get a flavor of it with the upcoming Pacers/Heat series. |

I recall plenty of drunk sorority girls from '87-'90. In fact, very pleasant memories. Ahem. Anyway... I wonder if some of the empty seats issue can be traced to the current requirement that nonstudents must validate student tix. Seemed like it was easier to unload the games you couldn't or wouldn't go to when the potential buyer wasn't faced with a hefty surcharge. As a result, more folks were able to buy and use student section tix. |

Not really. Players change, etc, but the uniform is a constant element of fandom. If you have good memories of your team wearing a particular uniform, you're probably more likely to want to keep that uniform. In this case, nobody gives a shit about the Jags, so any change is welcome. The Dolphins have a past tradition of winning in a uniform that didn't change too much over the years, therefore folks might be reluctant to see changes to their gear. |

I have the unscientific impression that we were the people's champion this year for a couple reasons: 1) our team was entertaining due to its offesively-oriented play, 2) we had recognizable names - the POY, McGary, NBA legacies, 3) the "M" brand is recognizable to average fans, and 4) most pundits seemed to agree yesterday that we were the victim of unskilled officiating. Unfortunately for Louisville, the viewing public appeared to tire of the Kevin Ware story and I don't feel a lot of love - respect, maybe - for Rick Pitino or any of their anonymous players. On the other hand, I'm expecting a new anti-Fab 5 backlash any moment now. If it hasn't already occured. |

| 10 weeks 5 days ago | I've never watched a replay |
I've never watched a replay of this game. Too painful. By accident, I have seen replays of the time-out sequence and wondered: 1) Why didn't Jalen rip the ball out of Webbers hands? IIRC, when Webber gains possession, Jalen is in position to receive an outlet pass. He's facing Webber and clapping his hands. 2) Traveling. Yep. 3) Webber was scared shitless and completely overwhelmed by the moment. Why else would he listen to a single (reportedly) bench player yelling "TIME OUT"? At the time, I recall thinking: 1) The game is physical. UNC rotated some big men (Montross, Salvadori, some other goon) that made things troublesome inside. 2) Donald Williams should really start missing some shots soon. Right? 3) Webber and maybe Jalen are going pro after they win this game. 4) UM didn't finish UNC when the had the chance with, I think, 3 or 4 minutes to go. Ah, well. It happened. Hopefully this group makes us forget that game a little. |
| 11 weeks 6 days ago | Oftentimes, games present |
Oftentimes, games present higher-levarage situations in the 7th or 8th innings. In these cases, teams will often employ a "relief ace" to get a couple critical outs. There was a Bill James study a few years ago which eschewed the ideas of specialized 9th-inning closers entirely. |

I still dislike Grant Hill. As far as Laetner, there was never any mystery about his d-baggery. But Grant Hill was placed on a pedestal and we were all expected to worship his bloodline, supposed intellect, work ethic and clean life. This continued well into his NBA career until his injuries and complete inability to help his many different teams advance into the post season. I may not hate Duke, but its really difficult for me to like them. But I'm not sure any of that translates into a current rivalry. I live in the Triangle, have Duke friends, and can assure you that UM doesn't make their list. It's probably composed of UNC and...and that's it. I actually get the impression that they feel like they should win every game and if they don't it was because of bad luck (other team exceeds expectations or one of their own is injured). Think Notre Dame - but without the Catholic pretense. |

These are real-life examples from nearly 20 years of municipal goverment: 1) Family of the officer or a fellow officer 2) Friend of the officer 3) City Council member (sometimes...however, acrimonious labor negotiations have made this one a coin-flip, at best). 4) City Managers (see #3) 5) Wife of City Manager (see #3) 6) Really important person in the community (like a high school football coach or popular high school principal). 1&5 - Beat both these neandraphucks whenever possible. I will never take those rivalries for granted ever, ever again. 2&4 - Play Devin at QB whenever possible. I wouldn't show any of the WR looks until we have to. 3 - By mid-season, the depth chart becomes a strict meritocracy. Competent Seniors will generally get the nod early in the year. But when the conference schedule begins, if Bolden is better, he plays. |

Great suggestions on both points. I'm thinking that UM RB's who are drafted in the League seem to flame out because of the mileage on their rigs. Rob Lytle and Butch Woolfolk were the first guys I remember fitting that profile - they surface for a few good games and break down. A-Train, Big Carry and D. Hart later on. Football Outsiders has some good stuff on this issue, in general. |

That week was a hazy blur of mild psychadelics for me, but there were few out-of-town Deadheads who were remotely aware of the MBB national championship. The *scene* outside the AA shows, as all Grateful Dead shows until 1994 or so, was low-key. |

There was nothing sinister or dangerous about those *riots* except for some property damage. The police were well-behaved, which always helps - no small feat since Hash Bash likely tested their last nerve on Saturday. I recall a chinese restaurant (NW corner of S. Univ/Church) losing an overhang under the weight of people standing on it. Seems like a car was tipped on its side. Some broken bottles. So, yeah, it's easy to classify this as a riot because people broke stuff. I remember shuffling home around 2am both nights through empty streets. |

As a vet of the 80's when we had elite mbb and football, I can tell you that the two programs appear much closer and supportive of one another than they did when I was on campus. There were two distinctive cultures - Frieder's crew always seemed to be on the verge of scandal (or so it felt) vs the traditional, old-school Schembechler cult. Now, things seem very collegial. I like where we're at and where we appear to be heading. |

I'm too lazy to dig for a link, but I recall part of the issue was when Staee hung a "Big 10 Champion" banner BEFORE the game (they had secured at least a tie heading into the contest), proceeded to lose to a possibly irate Boilermaker team, and contiuned the chest-pounding after the loss. It was so close to the Nebraska bogart of our '97 football title that I couldn't resist pointing to Spartan fans that they, too, were sharing a title - mostly because they were very quick to point to our shared MNC. |

The inside of of Ohio Stadium has been chopped up and is little too quirky. I'm pretty sure its sightlines are piss-poor in many parts of the stadium (upper decks, underneath the overhangs, etc). But the outside of the stadium is intersting for its arches - it seems to present itself as an historic structure. MSU looks like a place you'd see the Hungarian national soccer team play home friendlies.. |
