^^Agreed.  In his prime, he was a good MLB in the Cover-2.  Excellent in coverage, not so well against plays where he was forced to shed blockers.

About what?  Exactly? That the Celtics had "no chance" against the Lakers?  BFD.  He was playing golf while Bird was, in fact, correct.  

There's much we can debate, but Bird was correct - the Celtics had a chance to repeat and the Piston's didn't.  Whether or not Bird was deserved of the "hype" was irrelevant.  His teams won three (3) NBA titles and we can only find a handful of players in the 80's that can claim more success.  Moreover, I have trouble believing that Bird won three (3) MVP's (not to mention a shitload of other honorariums) based on "hype."  

Listen, I'm a rare fan of both franchises for a variety of uninteresting reasons.  IMHO, it was the greatest period of pitched battle in NBA history (Celtics/Sixers, Celtics/Lakers, Celtics/Pistons, Pistons/Bulls).  For whatever reason David Stern wasn't enamoured with any of it.  Hopefully we get a flavor of it with the upcoming Pacers/Heat series.

Not really.  Players change, etc, but the uniform is a constant element of fandom.  If you have good memories of your team wearing a particular uniform, you're probably more likely to want to keep that uniform.  In this case, nobody gives a shit about the Jags, so any change is welcome.  The Dolphins have a past tradition of winning in a uniform that didn't change too much over the years, therefore folks might be reluctant to see changes to their gear.   

Good post.  I felt no malice toward any of the fanbases we played over the past few weeks. But my living room is relatively isolated from opposing fans.

I've never watched a replay of this game.  Too painful.  By accident, I have seen replays of the time-out sequence and wondered:

1) Why didn't Jalen rip the ball out of Webbers hands?  IIRC, when Webber gains possession, Jalen is in position to receive an outlet pass.  He's facing Webber and clapping his hands.

2) Traveling. Yep.

3) Webber was scared shitless and completely overwhelmed by the moment.  Why else would he listen to a single (reportedly) bench player yelling "TIME OUT"?

At the time, I recall thinking:

1) The game is physical.  UNC rotated some big men (Montross, Salvadori, some other goon) that made things troublesome inside.

2) Donald Williams should really start missing some shots soon.  Right?

3) Webber and maybe Jalen are going pro after they win this game.

4) UM didn't finish UNC when the had the chance with, I think, 3 or 4 minutes to go.

Ah, well.  It happened.  Hopefully this group makes us forget that game a little.

Potential ala-carte apps like Youtube, Hulu, Netflix, and AppleTv have not succeeded in gathering relevant content.  As much as I'd love it to happen - and I currently use Air Stream and Apple Tv as a means of staying off the grid - I'm not optimistic.

It seems as if mass media learned a valuable lesson after watching Napster and iTunes completely rework the music industry.

It's clean and boring.  Columbus lacks the grit and character (history?) that places like Cleveland (aside from its urban rot) or Cinci have.  I could be dropped into Columbus and not really be able to discern it from any other cities that have grown in the last 30 years (e.g., Raliegh,NC or Columbia, SC).

In the days before student section validation, it always made me laugh when civilians - particularly older ones - had seats in the student sections.  They'd squint at their tickets, look around at where their seats might be, find their two (2) seats filled by four (4) students, try to make everyone move around, find an usher, watch the usher try to move everyone around, dodge and glare at the marshmallows flying their way, eventually squeeze into a spot, sit, complain that everyone around them was standing, wrinkle their faces and ask if someone was "burning leaves" nearby...then leave after the marching band.  

Longstoryshort: I'm ok with giving folks like that their own section.

Teams would rather use roster spots for guys like Tebeau because, you know, Timmy knows how to win.  Dan doesn't.  There it is: big difference.

During The Game I told a woman - a really drunk and classless Ohio fan in front of me - to please "shut up" because she was "talking like a truck driver."  As I write this I can't determine why I used "truck driver" to describe her behavior (or why I lowered myself to say anything).  I should have been better than that.  But it still pisses me off that Staee and Ohio fans feel like they can act however they please in our stadium.

Speaking as someone who has police officers working for him (yes, my parents are quite proud. thx)  I can say that the "do you know me" line sometimes never has to be uttered to work for the offender.  The following folks are regularly given breaks following incidents like traffic offenses, possible DUI or domestics.  These are real-life examples from nearly 20 years of municipal goverment:

1) Family of the officer or a fellow officer

2) Friend of the officer

3) City Council member (sometimes...however, acrimonious labor negotiations have made this one a coin-flip, at best).

4) City Managers (see #3)

5) Wife of City Manager (see #3)

6) Really important person in the community (like a high school football coach or popular high school principal).

My guess is SB police (much like AA, EL or Mt P blues) are probably quite negative toward campus shenanigans.  So, no, they don't give a shit who you are.

Dan Shaughnessey of the Boston Globe is pretty close.  His schtick relied on the Red Sox to collapse every year and he created a cottage industry when he wrote "Curse of the Bambino" in the 90's.  Schilling called Shaugnessey "Shank" and continues to publicly fight with him.

1&5 - Beat both these neandraphucks whenever possible.  I will never take those rivalries for granted ever, ever again.

2&4 - Play Devin at QB whenever possible. I wouldn't show any of the WR looks until we have to.

3 - By mid-season, the depth chart becomes a strict meritocracy.  Competent Seniors will generally get the nod early in the year.  But when the conference schedule begins,  if Bolden is better, he plays.

Great suggestions on both points. I'm thinking that UM RB's who are drafted in the League seem to flame out because of the mileage on their rigs.  Rob Lytle and Butch Woolfolk were the first guys I remember fitting that profile - they surface for a few good games and break down.   A-Train, Big Carry and D. Hart later on.  Football Outsiders has some good stuff on this issue, in general.

Do people like or dislike this trend in uniforms along age groups?  In other words, do young people like these - and old people dislike them?  

I'm 42 and I completely hate some of the kits I've seen in the NCAA and NFL in the past few years.

Teams rarely carry more than two (2) LHP in their bullpen.  Three LHP in the pen is silly.  These things get sorted out by mid-May.

Loved Season 3 - my favorite.  Season 4 depresses me.  Haven't watched Season 5 yet.

If they shuffle through too many recruiting classes like their last one (maybe two), their "depth" and stability" could be called into question. 

My first thought when I hear about Maryland is the chant that Cameron/Duke gives them at the start of games - "NOT OUR RIVAL[clap-clap-clapclapclap]NOT OUR RIVAL[clap-clap-clapclapclap].  I always kind of felt bad for them, but they did win a NC a few years back (2002?).

There was nothing sinister or dangerous about those *riots* except for some property damage.  The police were well-behaved, which always helps - no small feat since Hash Bash likely tested their last nerve on Saturday.  I recall a  chinese restaurant (NW corner of S. Univ/Church) losing an overhang under the weight of people standing on it.  Seems like a car was tipped on its side.  Some broken bottles.  So, yeah, it's easy to classify this as a riot because people broke stuff.  I remember shuffling home around 2am both nights through empty streets.  

Yeah.  My girlfriend at the time was from north Jersey and it was difficult to wear Michigan gear during the next few vistis to her place.  The entire play was the karmic opposite of the UNC game in '93.
