Not sure what you mean about my attitude. But, ok. Also confused by the *better and fairer examples* being football and baseball. Baseball actually allows its players to earn a living straight out of high school, albeit in a minor league system. Football doesn't. And actually requires an additional year of servitude in the NCAA, compared with college BB. Generally, I prefer the professional versions of these sports, as well. Generally.
Again, I'd love for college basketball players to hang out and play for my laundry for a few years, maybe even earn degrees. That said, I can appreciate elite players : 1) wanting to get paid if they are able, 2) getting opportunities to develop against better competition. Furthermore, going to college/staying in college in no predictor for success or even continued employment (insert countless examples here).
I went to a handful of Duke games this year. They were more enjoyable with Jabari Parker. But since he's good at basketball, he has a right to get paid for it. So I'll enjoy him in the NBA. This isn't hard.

Anfield won't get the chance to apply their own punishment. FIFA kinda handled it. I suppose they could tack something on, but Suarez will be in a warmer climate ASAP. Except, they can't move him. FIFA'd.
Your sentiment about always representing your club no matter what is quaint, but it also assumes that Liverpool wouldn't hold him accountable. They don't really get that opportunity.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||No doubt in theory. But||
No doubt in theory. But there's no comparison to today's EPL and the FA of the 80's in terms of finance, popularity and stature. Do you think the ownership groups will sit quietly if FIFA continues its over reach? I think you will see a super league of european teams before you see FIFA/UEFA win a battle against the EPL.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||And I will continue to bang||
And I will continue to bang this because in addition to creating a precedent it is inconsistent policy.
FIFA applied punishment, as they are able to do. What is different is that they applied unilateral punishment for an overt physical act that occurred on the pitch which extends to the club season. And now the club suffers collateral damage for an act committed on FIFA's watch. It is inconsistent because FIFA didn't act when the FA sandwiched a four-match suspension at the end of 2013 and a six-match suspension of domestics around Suarez appearences in the 2013 Confeds Cup.
Anfield completely loses an asset with no ability to deal him to another club - which is likely their wish at this point - because he can't be transferred during the suspension. That's what has me pissed. Not your condescending remark about losing "my precious Suarez."
|8 weeks 1 day ago||Reds fans were already down||
Reds fans were already down on him. IMHO, they're more upset they can't do anything with him until October.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||I've said repeatedly that||
I've said repeatedly that something had to be done, and many here asserted (and want) this punishment to be more severe. But FIFA is overreaching and reactionary in this case.
When Suarez bit Ivanovic in club play he was banned by the English FA. Yet FIFA seemed unconcerned and allowed him to play for Uraguay. However, this punishment (again, something was forthcoming and deserved) prohibits Anfield from doing anything (sale or otherwise) until mid-October. It's a bad precedent for a physical altercation. They happen all the time. And yes, biting is bad. But so are headbuts, punches, overly-agressive tackles, eye-pokes or any number of other dirty acts on the pitch. They will now be handled by FIFA. At the expense of the clubs that pay the salaries.
As a result, the clubs like Chelsea, Juventus, et. al., will be more resistant to international play because they have invested significant resources in their clubs and the damage their players take for their national teams is a major anaccountable depreciation.
This is why you will hear more talk of a superleague involving not just the EPL, but the major clubs from the other euro associations.

Cool, I negged you for not reading all of my posts. I said repeatedly that: 1) Suarez should be given some form of FIFA punishment and 2) released/sold from Liverpool.

Or the severe discipline is for punching refs, fixing games, etc., as you so dillegently proved.
On the other hand, discipline may not be for banning players from domestic clubs in major leagues for shit that occured in international play because, well, FIFA doesn't want to set the precedent and take on the EPL when they know fully well that the EPL is already sick of their players getting otherwise abused abroad and could very well decide to use this event to make their point.
Congrats on being up on Portuguese football. You're a better fan me, or just about anyone else I know.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||You've repeatedly given||
You've repeatedly given examples of FIFA bans. That have...no similarities? I'm appropriately enlightened. Where did this Pinto lad play his matches? Right. Not the EPL. Or any other club that I (or much of the football world) give a shit about.
As unique as the Suarez offense was, he will not get a six-month sentience. Just re-read my posts above. I'm gonna resort to story boards or maybe finger puppets if you choose to continue.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||It's not similar to using||
It's not similar to using knife or fixing a match, which is what you argue. Again, FIFA thinks it's not completely dissimilar.
|8 weeks 1 day ago||I'm not sure why you continue||
I'm not sure why you continue to be unclear: FIFA will not hand out the punishment you want because there is no basis for it. It was a shocking physical outburst, yet ultimately similar in nature to a headbut, punch or elbow - none of which ever got a player a FIFA lifetime ban or other major suspension from a domestic league.
There's no need to try to explain the distinction between Rojas and Suarez. So I won't.
Also yes, the increasing financial significance of the major European clubs and the well-heeled foreign ownership groups now occupying the EPL will probably be a factor in FIFA decision making in this situation. It seems naive to think otherwise. The ownerships do not want the value of their investments damaged by international play. FIFA will not fight this battle by setting a precedent.
Suarez is definitely done for this tournament. Unfortunately, Anfield may decide to go another season because they'd be selling low at this point. Maximizing his value is important because Ajax is owed 10%-15% from a future sale (a "sell on" clause).
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Do you read what you write||
Do you read what you write upthread?
Earlier, you dedicated time to a google search which produced a handful of articles supporting FIFA lifetime bans for corruption and fixing. However, you later admitted (now I get to deploy quotation marks) that they were not equivalent to the "violent conduct" that Suarez committed on the pitch.
And then, because the Suarez bite is "uniquely embarassing" FIFA will be compelled to act. But instead of a lifetime ban, you are giving his psychosis a "6 or 12 month suspension from football" to sort itself.
Ok. Again, there's been no example of a player or any sort getting a FIFA lifetime ban - hell, a FIFA-induced months-long ban that extends into domestic club season - for an EPL player. Use your google skills and let me know what you find. It was a bite - he didn't conspire with gamblers or prostitutes. There's a difference and a line that FIFA would need to cross.
Furthermore, someone at FIFA needs to hear your prognosis because initial reports have Suarez facing a much smaller punsihment than you'd like (click here for my google skilz). And yes, domestic clubs would revolt if - on top of their assets returning from the World Cup, Copa and the like all busted up and exhausted like they do now - they were lose players to FIFA suspensions related to international play.
I'm sick of his shit and want him off Reds if Anfield can swing it. But sorry, there's a good chance Suarez will be scoring against your side sometime soon.

Earlier you referenced the fact that bans were essentially issued for match fixing/corruption. And I can certainly own up to my oversimplification of the issue.
The relevant fact is that FIFA imposing a ban for this type of offense - a violent foul - is unprecedented and probably wont happen to a player who is in the world's most lucrative league (or La LIga, etc). The domestic associations would revolt.

Now, pretty much everyone has a room full of ivy leaguers with proprietary projection systems.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||No, I'm definitely not||
No, I'm definitely not discounting the use of 'advanced statistics' but they definitely weren't the 'primary concept' in the book or reality. And, no, the mid/small market teams were not taking the Moneyball approach during the that era. It was pretty much the A's. Hell, the first next team to take on Moneyball was the big-market Red Sox.
You make the critical point - teams of limited means have to take advantage of undervalued assets and exploit market inefficiencies to their advantage.
I'm not sure whether Iowa is successful in this approach or not, I'm just saying that Moneyball is much more than numbers.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||I don't watch anything on the||
I don't watch anything on the broadcast networks anyway. Sports, I guess, when I can't stream it. The music industry continues to suffer for not adapting to evolving technology and I imagine cable/satellite will suffer the same fate eventually. I've been off their grid for a couple years. I watch Netflix and download all other content via Apple TV. Never been happier.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Moneyball wasn't restricted||
Moneyball wasn't restricted to the use of metrics like WARP or OBP. It also involved breaking from scouting traditions like judging a player by his athletic appearence. For example, Kevin Youklis had amazing on-base skills but he didn't look like Joe Dimaggio - he was undervalued in the market. There was also the example of moving a player from his traditional and known position to an unfamiliar one in order to maximize your roster. Scott Hatteberg was out of baseball because, as a catcher, his bad shoulder or arm didn't allow him to make throws to 2B. During the offseason Oakland GM Billy Beane pushed the idea to move him to 1B, thereby creating value from a previously unusable asset.
So, it kinda sounds like what Iowa tries to do with their recruiting.

|8 weeks 2 days ago||If it hasn't already been||
If it hasn't already been said, it's important to distinguish between FIFA and his club team (Liverpool). Suarez could be punished on the federation level, but probably not within the EPL. I can't think of a precedent for a FIFA sanction carrying over to the club level where tension already exists over scheduling conflicts and injuries.
On the other hand, Liverpool may act on their own by agreeing to sell Suarez to someone (like Barca or Real) or handing him a suspension of some sort. Remember, this is the same ownership group that put up with Manny's bullshit with the Red Sox. Until they couldn't. Likewise, Brendan Rogers seems like a manager that won't tolerate sheanigans.

Rooney had some jump today. Gerrard was nearly invisible in the last 1/3 of the game, but England's defense was horrible throughout.
Awesome story - in FIFA '12 or '13, I sold Gerrard, bought a bunch of young players and went on to dominate the EPL for a few *years.* Could you imagine the shitstorm that would create in Liverpool if John Henry, et. al. let him walk? As they might do with Suarez?

Meyer's negative recruiting likely consists of some reference to Hoke's increasingly hot seat. That's a pretty typical recruiting move against a rival and I'm not sure if we should be upset about it.
