Will always root for the dude for choosing Blue and giving us his best efforts, but when you choose to play in the elite arena, be it business, politics or sports, you justifiably open yourself up to comparisons to others in the elite field, and Doyle just didn't measure up at that level. Not sorry to see him go at all, and hope it points to Beilein finally starting to wake up to the need for more athleticism, muscle and bounce in his bigs.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||When all a team does is field||
When all a team does is field small dudes that pass it around the perimeter and jack up 3's, you'd expect there not to be so many turn overs. If we had anything even resembling a post game I'd have a lot more respect for that stat.
Most people on here love having Beilein as our coach and we wouldn't want him gone, we just don't get why the man can't find a way to work big, burly rebounding horses into his stable of players. He had one - McGary - and the results were great. Now, players of McGary's caliber don't fall from trees, but even poor man's versions that hustle and can bang and board would be so welcome here. Yet all we get is gangly, fey white dudes who really do nothing in particular well.
What does Donnell do well? Shoot 3's? No. Board? No. Assist? No. Score? No. Doyle is even worse. They set good picks I guess?
We love Beilein, we are just frustrated with his disdain for quality big men, and many of us don't buy into the apologists who say that such disdain is part and parcel with how Beilein runs his offense, and that stud big men just wouldn't work out.

I'll have a pair of the rose colored glasses you're wearing. Whatever his philosophy is, eyes don't lie - our players are unathletic especially in the paint - and I come from an era when Michigan was the dominant program in the state, so just getting to the dance now while losing to MSU (at home) and OSU doesn't cut it especially in year 9. Love Beilein, swell guy, great coach, brought the program from horrible to mediocre with a couple flashes in the pan, but fact remains, his inability to leverage our deep runs the last few years into better talent is a massive disappointment.

Beilein's recruiting over the last 3 years may be the worst brand equity leverage job in the history of big time University of Michigan sports. Beilein is a good coach, but a shit recruiter. Just shit. Probably did less with a NC Championship appearance toward garnering future recruits than any Michigan coach ever.
Michigan has a proud basketball history, leads the series with MSU, yet we are to be cool with losing because we're not supposed to be Duke...
This isn't about the last one or two games either. It's definitely a trajectory thing. Beilein at some point should understand the value of rebounding and actually get himself some athletes down in the paint as opposed to good guys like Doyle who are less coordinated than my imaginary little sister.
Beilein shouldn't be fired, but he should revisit his recruiting model and look for changes.

While the punt was the fluke play of our lifetimes, I will never understand how MSU got by OSU at the Shoe this year. That may be the flukiest win of our lifetimes as well.
The other lifetime fluke we witnessed this year is MSU reaching their absolute football ceiling. For all of Dantonio's respectable work with 3 stars, MSU simply will never have the brand to bring in the requisite the talent to crack the national championship ceiling in football, ever in our lifetimes.
There is only one program in this state capable of that, and that's the program that can have a recruiting class ranked #1 in late December even after losing 6 of 7 and 10 of 11 to their arch-rivals, and yeah.
Michigan is the only true brand in college football in our state. I hope Sparty enjoyed the ride because it's all back to Earth with them starting with the destruction we just beheld.

One difference between our points of view is that when I watched Brady QB us in that Orange Bowl vs Bama, while the game was going on I was saying to myself that he was having the single best QB performance I'd ever seen by a Michigan QB. Brady was absolutely incredible that game, and it still remains the finest QB peformance I have ever seen by a Michigan QB.

Looking at this year, Urbz appeared the only of the two coaches that rose to the challenge of The Game - it was the only game we were out-classed. That needs to change. That is honestly all I care about. Sparty will remain pesky and annoying but with our rise in talent and coaching, Sparty will be a bug on the windshield soon enough. To me it's all about beating Urbz and hoping JH spoke at length with candidates about their way to do that and chose the best option.

But spin it you must, to evidence just how much that original thought gets under your skin...
Michigan is clearly re-emerging and the sun is now beginning to set on MSU's fleeting flail at cracking the glass ceiling that only one program in this state can transcend (playing for national championships). Especially given the likelihood another Connor Cook won't be wearing green and white any time soon. Thus, the words "little bro" shall continue to issue forth from my lips without a care in the world when referring to MSU coaches, players and fans.

Fully rescind this now. Social media needs to be divided into the a 21 and over crowd and a 20 and under crowd, and sometimes I feel the same way about this forum.

The unsportsmanlink on Henry that gifted Sparty a first down was also comical. He jumped just as the whistle blew and landed ON A WOLVERINE. He roughed his own teammate and for that Sparty got a first down when they would have punted.
The no call when Retchke or Bullough elbowed Rudock in the head while defenseless on the ground after catching his own pass was another reffing gem.
Lots of reffing comedy in this one but end of day it was two very even teams if you look at the positives and negatives, and could have gone either way. Is what it is, but yeah the referees were great comedy.
The bright side is that Cook was MAGNITUDES better than Rudock and we were even with them, so imagine when we get Peters in and State goes back down to a non NFL caliber QB.

MSU has been the team that has exposed the last two coaches. They exposed RR's offense by consistently shutting Denard down after all our glorious ND wins and 5-0 starts. They exposed Hoke's offense as well with the lovely negative rushing yard days. This trend demonstrates the high level of preparation Dantonio puts into Michigan, just as Bo did for Woody. Yes, I went there. Dantonio's obsessed fixation on beating Michigan rivals that of Bo beating Woody. The difference is Bo won with class as opposed to "60 minutes of roughing" or whatever Narduzzi called it.
Would not be surprised to see Dantonio send a lineman on an intentional late hit or head twist to try to get Rudock out of the game like they did with Denard. In fact knowing Dantonio and how obsessed he is, I give that about a 50% chance of happening.
I'm excited for our chances, but seriously scared that this can end up being MSU's sweetest victory over us above all the others in the last 8 years.
|28 weeks 4 days ago||Groucho Mark||
This game scares me. Dantonio has proven a good tactical coach and for all we know MSU has been mediocre because Dantonio has left 80% of his playbook in the bag for this game. A win over Michigan is equivalent to 4-5 other wins to them. Simply put, we are their universe.
They have stud QB, RB and receivers. I like our chances since we're at home but it would not surprise me in the least if MSU plays 10x better this weekend than it has the rest of the year.

|28 weeks 6 days ago||Tell you what man, this first||
Tell you what man, this first month of Harbaugh has gone just about as perfect as possible. All signs now point to Michigan being able to end it's perennial reign as blue chip brides' maids (Peppers and others notwithstanding).
Kids are seeing a team that is winning, coached by a staff with deep NFL roots and ties, coached by a staff that is quite obviously showing itself to know how to coach kids "up," oh, and joining the winningest team in football with the coolest uniforms, best tradition, biggest stadium, oh, and potentially offering them a damn good degree if bad luck strikes their NFL plans.
So proud to be a Wolverine these days. Coach may not end up recruiting all the blue chips because his eye for talent will probably be better than all of the recruiting services out there, but when he does go after the 5 stars, I really like our chances now.

Give me at least 3 more games of similar dominance and we can start bringing up comparisons but till then, no way man. '97 stands apart with '06.
|30 weeks 2 days ago||The D played well but I agree||
The D played well but I agree with coach that there is a lot of room for improvement. The D was made to look better because BYU's offense, especially Mangum, was very off. Not only did they play poorly, they were assuredly exhausted from such an incredible amount of travel across 4 time zones for 4 games.
Point being, I won't be surprised to see decent offenses put 30 or 40 on us because great as the D looks, it's still the first year under a new system and our D line still hasn't played against a true, mauling O line like they'll face vs MSU and OSU.
Encouraged? No doubt. Think our chance to beat MSU and OSU is better now than after week 1? Yes, but definitely room for the entire team to improve, and excited to watch this great staff continue to make that a reality.
|30 weeks 3 days ago||The team concept of "we'll||
The team concept of "we'll enjoy this today but come tomorrow start thinking about our next opponent" needs to apply to our fanbase as well.
Several times in the last 8 years we've done nicely to start a season only to be exposed by MSU and Dantonio - a guy who focuses his entire staff on finding ways to counter Michigan.
That game is going to rough for Rudock. State is going to store 8 in the box and crash dbs and safeties to make Rudock's life hell, and I'd give even odds he throws a pick six that game the way he's hesitating and the way MSU's D has risen to the occasion against us.
Tired of the 5-0 or 4-1 starts followed by a nose dive starting with the Sparty game, so I for one plan on keeping mum until we see what we see vs State.

I wonder if Harbaugh pulled Gary aside and had him take a look at Ryan Glasgow as an example of how the Michigan environment with the new staff can really help a kid maximize his potential. Glasgow is now officially a BEAST, and we will miss him next year.

Yet this has been MSU's exact gameplan on D against us the last several years and I'm still waiting for us to happily enjoy those open outsides for pitches/sweeps/WR screens you speak of.
Hopefully some Harbaugh will rectify, but things are getting grim absent some serious upswing from Jake soon.
|31 weeks 3 days ago||Brian expresses my mood||
Brian expresses my mood exactly.
All the people defending Rudock aren't getting it. His play is causing every D coordinator on the rest of our schedule to happily prepare a scheme that will put 8.5 in the box to fill gaps, stuff the run and apply crazy pressure on Jake because there is just zero fear of getting beat over the top. They'll take their chances with man coverage, crash safeties, crash dbs from the edges, etc., etc. and we may see another Hoke-like offensive state line or two, especially vs PSU and MSU.
We might be in store for some very ugly losses quite soon unless Rudock can gain some respect downfield to keep defenses honest. I mean, why even bother with a safety over the top when your QB can't even hit an open receiver downfield with minimal pressure? Crash that safety on a bliz and let's see how funny it will be to watch Rudock hit those same open receivers except with a ton of pressure. Might... be... ugly...
If Hoke were our coach I'd already throw in the towel knowing what's coming, but with Harbaugh, I hold out hope he can do some QB whispering and some scheme preparation for what we all know is coming from PSU, MSU and others who are seeing Rudock as wounded prey as they circle the waters.
|31 weeks 4 days ago||StraightDave stop before this||
StraightDave stop before this gets ugly on you. The receivers have been just fine, but it's kind of hard for them to catch deep balls thrown as poorly as they have been. If you want to blame Hoke, do so for lousy QB recruiting, not receivers. Rudock's deep ball is about as bad as I've seen from a UM QB since RichRod year 1. Hopefully Rudock gets his eyes checked or something and turns it around otherwise 7-5 is a possibility.
Oh, and I'm going with an absolute coin flip on this game. If it were in Utah I'd paint it a loss but at the Big House I'll go with BYU 23-20
|31 weeks 4 days ago||Couldn't care less since it's||
Couldn't care less since it's only September and our team is improving (except perhaps for Rudock's ability to find receivers beyond 8 yards downfield). All I care about is how Harbaugh plans to respond to the same defensive gameplan Sparty has used against us for almost a decade:
8.5 in the box
I'll be very disappointed if I don't see a major adjustment by our staff and instead we see a stat line of 40 yards rushing coupled with 6 sacks, 2 fumbles and 1 pick by Rudock due to all the pressure.
Coach just has to find a way to make Sparty pay for all of that hyper-D aggression it has gotten away with for years, and the saddest part is the best way to do so requires what appears to be the one thing our QB can't do - burn defenses over the top...
|31 weeks 5 days ago||Yep exactly what I expect||
Yep exactly what I expect against MSU. They're going to bring those safeties up every play. Their game plan will be roll the dice with man coverage and minimal back safety support in order to have numbers in the box. They'll win by shutting down our running game coupled with applying crazy pressure on a QB who's proving to be just about as bad as we've had at managing the deep ball. If he can't figure out his deep accuracy we'll be lucky to score 13 against State.
The X factor will of course be Harbaugh hopefully Harbaughing a hot route counter-attack that can hopefully build us some respect early in that game, but the way our QBs are looking I'm not holding much hope.

Yes he's a magician at molding talent, but this is Michigan. He should be able to recruit and mold 4 star talent across the board, not 3 star talent.
Blah blah trust Coach B over recruiting rankings aside, watching us against teams like MSU or Ohio State there's always a sizeable athleticism edge in their favor.

B. I honestly think Smith has succumbed to the running back equivalent of QB "happy feet" in that he's so used to defenders in his grill that his first reaction seems to be to square up on them to negotiate his two yards after contact, than to run away from them in the first place. This could a bad habit picked up last year courtesy of Funk's atrocious O line coaching when all Smith knew was contact.
That said, it's not just on him. Our guards need to improve. Braden and Kalis were real bad re pad level, burst, and pulling assignments... Was hard to watch.

I concur that I was encouraged by the OL despite the very plodding nature of our backs and their inability to always find the optimal hole. I'd say Chris Perry back in the 2000s had the best vision of any UM back we've ever had. The dude just always, always optimized his yards. If Smith had bounced that 4th and 1 in the 4th, he's 20 yards down the field... so sad.
But we all need to chill and recall we just played an opening road game with our new regime, against a quality team with a 4th year starting QB, heisman caliber back and top 5 D front, and we were 2 or 3 plays where even semi-competent QB throws would have guaranteed us victory.
A win would have been great, and we're all sad that Harbaugh wasn't the magician we'd irrationally hoped, but I was very encouraged across the board.

For your 21st bday give yourself a Wiki page. I will say it's impressive to see someone this devoted to our team who wasn't old enough to remember when we were dominant. Most of WD's M cognizant football experience has been the misery of the last few Carr years, RR and Hoke. Bless this kid for such devotion. I'm scared to think what might happen when we actually get back to being beasts again. As long as you don't end up like these two all should be fine:

What if it is broke? You could line Wisconsin, Nebraska and Stanford uniforms next to each other. All those uni's are boring as dirt.

Yes Adidas has had several misfires, especially for us, but personally, I like all three of these as cool alternatives for a game, especially the UCLA one. Especially when you remember how boring Nebraska's normal uniform is. It's straight out of the 1920s and just plain lame. "Classic" is all well and good, but when "classic" is boring and ugly, then an alternative now and then to fire kids up isn't so bad.
The difference is Michigan's classic look is timelessly badass, Nebraska's isn't. It's almost as though Wisconsin said "Let's be Nebraska except instead of a boring little plain text w, let's go with a Powerprint Word Art W." They both have shitty, boring uniforms, and just because they've been around for decades doesn't make them any more boring or shitty.
What I don't get is what makes Adidas think it makes sense to have the Nebraska guy modeling the uni to flash a gang sign. Or is he flashing a 3 because he's the field goal kicker? Or is he flashing a 3 because he's watching a basketball game? Or is he flashing an "E"? Doesn't compute and for that and only that, I trash Adidas on this one.

The thing that was fascinating about Denard is how polarized he was with regard to his skillset.
With speed and shiftiness of a 20 on a 10 scale, none of us in our lifetimes will see another Michigan QB possess the talent he possessed in these elements of his game. It was this extremely rare gift that made him stand out at times as the only Michigan player with otherworldy, exceptional talent during his years. It's what made him irresistable to watch, flaws and all.
In this way, I would say he is similar to Woodson. When you watched them play, you sensed that they possessed some talents that eclipsed those of anyone else on the field, where their star clearly shined brightest.
Denard however, had the misfortune of playing for two bumbling coaches in Hoke and Borges who called on him to move away from his god-given talent and, commencing with year 2, become a game manager. As a game manager who protected the ball, read coverage and avoided risky throws, no one would defend that he was a great QB. The debate might be as to whether he was even "good" at these elements of his QB play. That ND game where Denard had multiple picks and turn overs (like 5-6?) and we still only lost by less than a TD was by far the most infuriating example of Hoke and Borges misusing him. I had the displeasure of attending that shit game.
But for otherworldly speed, and his loyalty to the program amidst the transitional tumult around him and his bungling misuse by his coaches, and his just being such a damn likable guy, Denard should definitely be mentioned as one of the UM all time greats.

Watching Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams together post Wedding Crashers in this sullen drama is just mentally dissonant. It just doesn't compute. I keep waiting for Vaughn to crack a joke. He is just impossible to take seriously as a mob guy.

Lots of younger guys might not remember it but the best game in Michigan history was the '97 pasting of Penn State. This is a no brainer in every way.
1. DOMINATION. Close wins in key games are "great" ('69 OSU, Braylonfest, Minny comeback, '97 OSU, '98 Rosebowl) but they are not the best games to re-run as they are all littered with a great deal of pain when we were behind, the game was in doubt, we didn't look great, etc, and we squeaked out the W. The real best games are the ones were we completely dominated.
We absolutely dominated Penn State, even more spectacularly than the Jimmy Clausen and Brady Quinn laughers because Penn State as a more formidable opponent at the time.
2. UNDERDOG. PSU entered the game #2 and with the longest active win streak, and we were playing AWAY. We were underdogs, on the road.
3. HUGE STAKES. Lose this key game, and the NC was an afterthought.
4. GREATEST HIT OF ALL TIME. Daydrion Taylor's destruction of enormous TE Bob Stephenson was the most violent football play I have ever seen, and I've been watching football since the 70's. It ended the careers of both and set the tone for the a level of aggression Michigan's defense carried to the NC, and aspired to for a decade, culminating with the 2006 squad.
5. WHO WE BEAT. We didn't just beat a rival, we crushed three men that day - a QB named Mike McQueary, a D Coordinator named Jerry Sandusky, and a coach named JoPa. A pedophile and two pedophile enablers who did the very minimum required of them to stop him. Nuff said.
Greatest win in Michigan history.

Isaac. Smith is just too slow. Green is slightly faster but also just not fast enough not even counting vision problems.
