That spread makes a lot of sense and I actually expect us to lose in the 35 - 14 range because Speight just isn't where he needs to be and I don't see him getting there. More important to me is to see what Harbaugh can do to scheme us into a favorable position. College football is easily the sport where schematic coaching has the most impact on results, and last year's Game was not a good showing for our staff. Need to see progress on how we stop their spread and RPS them on offense this year otherwise this could be another long, long decade with the way Urban is recruiting. Yes, we are recruiting well too.

Ped State's D is horrible. Drawing conclusions on Speigh based on his performance against any of the D's we've seen so far is absurd. Let's see how he performs against real linebackers dropping in coverage and blitzing. His season will be judged on how he does vs MSU OSU Iowa Wisconsin pretty much.

4. The first quarter full of trick plays that led to wide open dudes and lots of points/yards against our D is a premonition of the upcoming MSU and Ohio State games.
5. Due to poor QB and O-line play, I now beleve we will lose to both MSU and OSU again, and the OSU game will be another ass-thumping.

A little brother is one who defines himself entirely by the example set by his big brother, and how he measures up to said sibling.
<Reads that picture> BINGO!!!
I never realized that Sparty's obsession with Michigan transcended success on the football field such that even at the peak of their success over 7 years, our little brothers are still good for that annual reminder that the University of Michigan was, is and always will be their entire world.
The sharpest contrast between our two programs is that Michigan's vision is national in scope, and transcends MSU and Ohio State. We measure ourselves nationally both in academics and athletically. MSU's vision is comprised of one and only one thing - "how do we measure up to Michigan?"
Karma, gravity, fate, and self-inflicted obsession like this picture are all always there to remind all of us of Sparty's place as nothing more than a regional program. Exhibit B would be Sparty's responce to their first chance at a national championship in half a century by taking the shape of a wack-a-mole under the Alabama Crimson elephant's 38-0 stomp in the CFB playoff. Translation: "Get on your bike Sparty and get back to your region and get back to obsessing over Michigan like is your lot in life."
This picture says "Yessir!"
Thanks for reminding us you obsess over us Sparty. We enjoy that yearly laugh.

Kindly never post this again. On that note, I'll kindly ask that no one ever post those annoying, obligatory post-rival injury posts of "Aw shucks So&So star player on our rival is hurt? |11 weeks 2 days ago||Don't think I'm saying||
Don't think I'm saying anything inflammatory or offensive, and I'm not inviting a religious commentary, but I do want to share that Tebow confuses me.
My potentially flawed assumptions:
1. The more competitive you are, it is fair to assume the more likely you are to be egocentric. Your will to do your best and to win is more important to you than the will or desires of your competitors.
2. Conversely the more devout you are (especially Tebow's given faith), it is fair to assume the more likely you are to be altruistic (do unto others, etc.).
3. The more egocentric, the less altruistic you can be, and vice versa.
Tebow is legendary for his competitiveness and faith. A friend of mine who is also a man of strong faith, is good friends with Tebow. He told me Tebow is the hardest working and most competitive athlete he has known. The two of them also volunteer in Central America and do a ton of charity work.
I respect Tebow on both counts, but I just don't understand how he exhibits such strong egocentrism and altruism in unison. It just doesn't add up to me.
This leads me to think the above-mentioned assumptions about competitiveness/ faith/ egocentrism/ altruism are inaccurate.

Hate everything about Penn State except that they are in Pennsylvania which isn't such a bad state. Aside from the obvious reasons over the last 5 years, their uniforms are awful, yet admired nationwide.
Admiration for Penn State uniforms makes about as much sense as people admiring an empty canvas as art. "Aaah the simplicity! The cleanliness of it! Undiluted in it's purity!" A roll of toilet paper is more interesting than Penn State's uniforms. The soap dish in my shower has more imagination than whomever designed the Penn State uniforms.
Fuck Penn State.
Then there's the "We Are Penn State" chant. I remember going to a game there in the mid-90's when we were losing to Lavar Arrington and company only to pull it out and crush their souls in the last 10 minutes. I'd never heard the chant until then and it befuddled me.
LIKE NO SH*T YOU ARE PENN STATE Captains of obvious? That's really the best you can do for a chant? State the most obvious thing in the stadium, wearing colorless gear devoid of an ounce of imagination in cheers, team colors, uniforms, etc...
I mean, it would be infinitely more interesting and imaginative if they instead chanted "WE ARE NOT! [INSERT OPPONENT NAME HERE]!" So it could rotate every week.
Seriously the coolest thing about Penn State was Paterno's giant nose, his shades and his flooder slacks. That's it.
Fuuuuuck Penn State.

When all a team does is field small dudes that pass it around the perimeter and jack up 3's, you'd expect there not to be so many turn overs. If we had anything even resembling a post game I'd have a lot more respect for that stat.
Most people on here love having Beilein as our coach and we wouldn't want him gone, we just don't get why the man can't find a way to work big, burly rebounding horses into his stable of players. He had one - McGary - and the results were great. Now, players of McGary's caliber don't fall from trees, but even poor man's versions that hustle and can bang and board would be so welcome here. Yet all we get is gangly, fey white dudes who really do nothing in particular well.
What does Donnell do well? Shoot 3's? No. Board? No. Assist? No. Score? No. Doyle is even worse. They set good picks I guess?
We love Beilein, we are just frustrated with his disdain for quality big men, and many of us don't buy into the apologists who say that such disdain is part and parcel with how Beilein runs his offense, and that stud big men just wouldn't work out.

While the punt was the fluke play of our lifetimes, I will never understand how MSU got by OSU at the Shoe this year. That may be the flukiest win of our lifetimes as well.
The other lifetime fluke we witnessed this year is MSU reaching their absolute football ceiling. For all of Dantonio's respectable work with 3 stars, MSU simply will never have the brand to bring in the requisite the talent to crack the national championship ceiling in football, ever in our lifetimes.
There is only one program in this state capable of that, and that's the program that can have a recruiting class ranked #1 in late December even after losing 6 of 7 and 10 of 11 to their arch-rivals, and yeah.
Michigan is the only true brand in college football in our state. I hope Sparty enjoyed the ride because it's all back to Earth with them starting with the destruction we just beheld.

One difference between our points of view is that when I watched Brady QB us in that Orange Bowl vs Bama, while the game was going on I was saying to myself that he was having the single best QB performance I'd ever seen by a Michigan QB. He won that game for us because he played at an A++ level. Had he played at say, your average UM QB B+ level, Alabama wins. Brady was absolutely incredible that game, and it still remains the finest QB peformance I have ever seen by a Michigan QB.

He might be the best D coach in the world but we need a guy who can help our guys be in a position to shut down Urbz's annoying as hell offense. Looking at this year, Urbz appeared the only of the two coaches that rose to the challenge of The Game - it was the only game we were out-classed. That needs to change. That is honestly all I care about. Sparty will remain pesky and annoying but with our rise in talent and coaching, Sparty will be a bug on the windshield soon enough. To me it's all about beating Urbz and hoping JH spoke at length with candidates about their way to do that and chose the best option.

But spin it you must, to evidence just how much that original thought gets under your skin...
Michigan is clearly re-emerging and the sun is now beginning to set on MSU's fleeting flail at cracking the glass ceiling that only one program in this state can transcend (playing for national championships). Especially given the likelihood another Connor Cook won't be wearing green and white any time soon. Fully rescind this now. Social media needs to be divided into the a 21 and over crowd and a 20 and under crowd, and sometimes I feel the same way about this forum.
Too many children without enough life experience to realize they aren't as special as mommy told them they were, who's heads are so far up their asses that when they post something thinking they just stumbled on a great new revelation for mankind, or in this case Michigan fandom, they don't realize they just joining the tired, revolving script of sheep posting the same typical gibberish season after season, year after year.

The unsportsmanlink on Henry that gifted Sparty a first down was also comical. He jumped just as the whistle blew and landed ON A WOLVERINE. He roughed his own teammate and for that Sparty got a first down when they would have punted.
The no call when Retchke or Bullough elbowed Rudock in the head while defenseless on the ground after catching his own pass was another reffing gem.
Lots of reffing comedy in this one but end of day it was two very even teams if you look at the positives and negatives, and could have gone either way. Is what it is, but yeah the referees were great comedy.
The bright side is that Cook was MAGNITUDES better than Rudock and we were even with them, so imagine when we get Peters in and State goes back down to a non NFL caliber QB.
Future is bright, just struggling to expunge the taste of the worst play I've seen in my life time. We'll all get over it.

Definitely like our chances but would not be surprised to see Rudock out of the game in the firs thalf due to a vicious late hit or head twist.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||MSU has been the team that||
MSU has been the team that has exposed the last two coaches. They exposed RR's offense by consistently shutting Denard down after all our glorious ND wins and 5-0 starts. They exposed Hoke's offense as well with the lovely negative rushing yard days. This trend demonstrates the high level of preparation Dantonio puts into Michigan, just as Bo did for Woody. Yes, I went there. Dantonio's obsessed fixation on beating Michigan rivals that of Bo beating Woody. The difference is Bo won with class as opposed to "60 minutes of roughing" or whatever Narduzzi called it.
Would not be surprised to see Dantonio send a lineman on an intentional late hit or head twist to try to get Rudock out of the game like they did with Denard. In fact knowing Dantonio and how obsessed he is, I give that about a 50% chance of happening.
I'm excited for our chances, but seriously scared that this can end up being MSU's sweetest victory over us above all the others in the last 8 years.

They have stud QB, RB and receivers. I like our chances since we're at home but it would not surprise me in the least if MSU plays 10x better this weekend than it has the rest of the year.

So proud to be a Wolverine these days. Coach may not end up recruiting all the blue chips because his eye for talent will probably be better than all of the recruiting services out there, but when he does go after the 5 stars, I really like our chances now.

The D played well but I agree with coach that there is a lot of room for improvement. The D was made to look better because BYU's offense, especially Mangum, was very off. Not only did they play poorly, they were assuredly exhausted from such an incredible amount of travel across 4 time zones for 4 games.
Point being, I won't be surprised to see decent offenses put 30 or 40 on us because great as the D looks, it's still the first year under a new system and our D line still hasn't played against a true, mauling O line like they'll face vs MSU and OSU.
Encouraged? No doubt. Think our chance to beat MSU and OSU is better now than after week 1? Yes, but definitely room for the entire team to improve, and excited to watch this great staff continue to make that a reality.

The team concept of "we'll enjoy this today but come tomorrow start thinking about our next opponent" needs to apply to our fanbase as well.
Several times in the last 8 years we've done nicely to start a season only to be exposed by MSU and Dantonio - a guy who focuses his entire staff on finding ways to counter Michigan.
That game is going to rough for Rudock. State is going to store 8 in the box and crash dbs and safeties to make Rudock's life hell, and I'd give even odds he throws a pick six that game the way he's hesitating and the way MSU's D has risen to the occasion against us.
Tired of the 5-0 or 4-1 starts followed by a nose dive starting with the Sparty game, so I for one plan on keeping mum until we see what we see vs State.

I wonder if Harbaugh pulled Gary aside and had him take a look at Ryan Glasgow as an example of how the Michigan environment with the new staff can really help a kid maximize his potential. Glasgow is now officially a BEAST, and we will miss him next year.

Brian expresses my mood exactly.
All the people defending Rudock aren't getting it. His play is causing every D coordinator on the rest of our schedule to happily prepare a scheme that will put 8.5 in the box to fill gaps, stuff the run and apply crazy pressure on Jake because there is just zero fear of getting beat over the top. They'll take their chances with man coverage, crash safeties, crash dbs from the edges, etc., etc. and we may see another Hoke-like offensive state line or two, especially vs PSU and MSU.
We might be in store for some very ugly losses quite soon unless Rudock can gain some respect downfield to keep defenses honest. I mean, why even bother with a safety over the top when your QB can't even hit an open receiver downfield with minimal pressure? Crash that safety on a bliz and let's see how funny it will be to watch Rudock hit those same open receivers except with a ton of pressure. Might... be... ugly...
If Hoke were our coach I'd already throw in the towel knowing what's coming, but with Harbaugh, I hold out hope he can do some QB whispering and some scheme preparation for what we all know is coming from PSU, MSU and others who are seeing Rudock as wounded prey as they circle the waters.

StraightDave stop before this gets ugly on you. The receivers have been just fine, but it's kind of hard for them to catch deep balls thrown as poorly as they have been. If you want to blame Hoke, do so for lousy QB recruiting, not receivers. Rudock's deep ball is about as bad as I've seen from a UM QB since RichRod year 1. Hopefully Rudock gets his eyes checked or something and turns it around otherwise 7-5 is a possibility.
Oh, and I'm going with an absolute coin flip on this game. If it were in Utah I'd paint it a loss but at the Big House I'll go with BYU 23-20

Couldn't care less since it's only September and our team is improving (except perhaps for Rudock's ability to find receivers beyond 8 yards downfield). All I care about is how Harbaugh plans to respond to the same defensive gameplan Sparty has used against us for almost a decade:
8.5 in the box
I'll be very disappointed if I don't see a major adjustment by our staff and instead we see a stat line of 40 yards rushing coupled with 6 sacks, 2 fumbles and 1 pick by Rudock due to all the pressure.
Coach just has to find a way to make Sparty pay for all of that hyper-D aggression it has gotten away with for years, and the saddest part is the best way to do so requires what appears to be the one thing our QB can't do - burn defenses over the top...

Yep exactly what I expect against MSU. They're going to bring those safeties up every play. Their game plan will be roll the dice with man coverage and minimal back safety support in order to have numbers in the box. They'll win by shutting down our running game coupled with applying crazy pressure on a QB who's proving to be just about as bad as we've had at managing the deep ball. If he can't figure out his deep accuracy we'll be lucky to score 13 against State.
The X factor will of course be Harbaugh hopefully Harbaughing a hot route counter-attack that can hopefully build us some respect early in that game, but the way our QBs are looking I'm not holding much hope.

The talent level still isn't there to get us past about 8 wins this year but after two games against Pac12, one marked difference between this year and last is that this year, the team gets better as the game goes, making strong adjustments. That's a sign of strong coaching.

Loss will cause me to... Harbaugh?
Win will cause me to... HARBAUGH.
I lol'd for a good spell on that. Gotta be my new Brian fave.

Figures the Domers might be interested in reviving this now that they're no longer the door knob they were through 2011 after Hoke's 11-2 season and Michigan appearing on the illusory rise, and having handed ND multiple close losses with even worse Michigan teams.
I say we return them the favor and wait a few years for Harbaugh to hit full stride and see if in fact this wasn't more about them just being chicken shits.

Must concur. Aesthetically, over wins, but tactically, you gotta go with under.
