And though that wasn't the whole issue, we have been running into 9 man fronts a lot and also defenses are jumping keys to stuff the run. The passing against IU will give PSU and OSU something to think about, and I hope we will see some better balance this weekend.
I think the one thing we may still be missing is the quick passing game to punish the LBs for jumping run. Quick slants to TE or WR, especially out of the slot. Anything to get the LBs and safeties to think for a second before pinning their ears back and crashing the run.
Side note: I think this may be the opposite if the issue with our LBs, they seem to be a second late deciding and then run into blocks instead of RBs...

This makes it clear that Smith got antsy and cut up when he should have stayed outside. He is not fast enough to be thinking he can make the corner. No question one of the other backs gets 5+ on this to the outside.
I love seeing this on film as it makes for easy teaching for the coaches. This is about as obvious as it gets that a well blocked play cannot prevent a back from cutting into a LB.
Interesting to see the UFR when it is out as I am not sure where the breakdowns were. Line may not have played as bad as it felt, and I do think Utah's front 7 are solid.

not sure if you will see this as I am late to this thread. There is a distinct difference in JH's approach to 5th year players that I don't believe will be just a one year adjustment. He does not want the 5th year to be automatic, and leverages that for further competition.
I agree with your frustration as I would at least like it to be easier to know who has another year or two left. We're going to need this board to help us keep track... hoping we collectively don't make the same change.

|1 year 13 weeks ago||I always think of it as a big play statement...||
If your front 4 are strong and can generate a rush, you don't have to rely on blitzing to get pressure. Blitzing is a gamble as there is always an opportunity for the offense if they see it in time.
On a big play, you don't want to have to gamble, you want to have options. You can always choose to blitz if your front 4 are solid.
Said another way, if your front 4 are not solid, you have to blitz and take risks to get pressure...

|2 years 2 weeks ago||Not clear that this is a system at all...||
Seems more like a collection of plays and formations chosen randomly from a video game...
I like some of the plays, but there is no base offense. There is no base formation from which we run various plays... Every play is a constraint, but nothing has been established.
We also tend to run the same play in each of the various formations. I said during Nebraska on 3 occasions when they went Tackle-over "watch, they are going to run to the weak side" and they did... Did you notice on the tackle-over plays, the safety on the weak side came up, they did not adjust at all to the strong side... Nobody was fooled and we were doomed...
If you run tackle-over 4 or 5 times mixing in runs, PA, roll out to strong side, jet sweep to weak side, etc. then you have a chance of winning the RPS on any given play...

The problem is not that our linemen are bad. We have much better line talent than a lot of teams successfully running the ball.
The problem is that Al has gotten too predictable. When the defense is expecting to run, tackle-over does not get you yards... When the defense comes up for the run, you need to dump a quick slant to the slot or use play action to burn the single safety...

After growing up in Cadillac MI and going to UM for 5 football seasons I moved to Columbus to work for IBM... 22 years ago now and it has been a great place to live and to raise a family. You really can't go wrong with any of the communities North of the I-270 outerbelt. I have lived in Dublin for 12 years now, and 3 other areas before that.
The only detractors are the occasional packs of buckeyes (clusters?), but I think I get more grief from Staee fans overall. If we would beat both schools down over the next few years that won't be a big deal.
Having a big university in a good sized city helps add flavor with pretty much every band playing here and decent cultural opportunities.
We have good friends that moved from Dublin to Yorba Linda and missed Ohio... They got over it then moved to Syracuse (ouch!)
I would tell you to go for it. Certainly don't let the location drive the decision, you can be very happy here and not go crazy.

|3 years 32 weeks ago||Nicky Sualua...||
I had the pleasure of playing on a city league touch football team with Nicky his last year when he was academically ineligible (architecture major????) He joined our team because he was "in training" for the combines.
His routine was to sit in the car with his trainer and smoke pot for half an hour before each game. He was a gifted athlete with great hands and amazing skill for someone his size. He was my height and a hundred pounds heavier... But moved quite well...
The similarity I see is a pattern of bad decisions, and a linkage of pot and questionable work ethic. Nicki ended up drafted by the Cowboys and was their starting fullback for half of his rookie year... then he was the guy with Mark Tuinei when he died (http://archives.starbulletin.com/1999/05/11/sports/index.html)
It is certainly a stretch to equate the two, but at some point making bad decisions is rooted in a lack of ability to make good decisions. For people on the ledge, drugs seem to gently push them off in far too many cases...

"Mistakes are made and he was being held accountable and given suspensions. Any other coaches have done much worse and gotten away with a slap on the wrist. But because Tressel is such a good coach the media wanted to make an example out of him. This is NOT fair!"
Of course none of this matters if we don't go out and win the next 5 games against them...
|4 years 31 weeks ago||You reminded me of my favorite tee...||
A little off topic, but I wanted to get my dad (who lives in Northern Michigan surrounded by Spartans) the "East Lansing is a Woman of negotiable affection"... but when I showed it to him he didn't get it, so I passed...
|4 years 31 weeks ago||Their Nat'l Championship sweatshirts are getting a little worn||
At least a tat would hold up a little better (though it may stretch out over time) They still wear the Nat'l Championship sweatshirts ALL the time down here...
|4 years 31 weeks ago||Havanna and also Berlin...||
But it was an Xbox voice message from a fellow Black Op's player saying "Go Blue"...
Does that count?
P.S. my gamer account is 'M GO BLUE 90, and as I tell my wife, I only play to get quality time with my kids... who sometimes also play.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||He turned into Maurice Clarett in 4 short months...||
Wow, took Clarett 2 years to get that run down...
|4 years 35 weeks ago||Great point, taking $250K back from Tressel...||
is VERY different from the NCAA taking millions from the university...
From OSU's standpoint, as of now they are SAVING his salary for 5 games, AND getting $250K from Tressel... they net positive. Luke Fickel can win 4 or 5 games at that point in the schedule...
NCAA will want to see at least some sort of penalty to the program I have to believe...
|4 years 35 weeks ago||Don't forget the lie was not exposed until after the penalty...||
We still have not seen any reaction by OSU now that Tressel has made them look really really bad by covering up the email to old mentor dude.
How can Gene Smith and Gee save face now that the world knows Tressel lied to them and everyone else... Oh, and if they knew, this problem just gets bigger for tOSU.
|4 years 35 weeks ago||Gee... shouldn't worry about Tressel firing him.||
University president Gordon Gee made the comment in the first press conference that he "hopes Tressel doesn't fire him" when asked if JT should be fired...
Maybe someone should think about firing Gee, and the AD who both seem to be laughing this thing off. This is no longer about a major NCAA violation. This has gone into a dark area that any self respecting university or administration would see as a real threat to the future of the athletic program and reputation of the university.
As painful as the whole process was last year at Michigan, you can look at the coach and administration as clearly taking every second of it seriously, and proceeding with utmost professionalism and respect.
NCAA cannot ignore the facts of this case, nor will they ignore the attitude and manner in which this is being handled by the coach and university.
We don't want to see a BIG school get the death penalty, but this process should provide some much needed humility to the cockiest organization I have seen.
P.S. Living in Central Ohio for 20 years now, and having endured the past 8 years I must say this has been a fun story to watch unfold.
|4 years 35 weeks ago||Actually, I clicked here to learn about the new front page...||
Banner honoring Zach Novak and our MBB Ballers...
Good feelings about BB for the first time in a very long time... Need us a big thumper like Zach Banner inside.
Or a pair of 7'4" brothers (not butlers like Duke has)
|4 years 35 weeks ago||If he plays both, we should have a scholarship for him...||
I know we are tight on BB scholarships, but Football would likely cover it anyway...
Can anyone confirm the NCAA guideline on where a scholarship counts if a player is in more than one major sport?
Even if he weren't available until Big 10 season, I guarantee we could find minutes banging inside.
|4 years 42 weeks ago||Lets just leave this trread open for the Spring Game...||
Hate to waste a good 'open thread'...
|4 years 43 weeks ago||Maybe a little bit...||
Wow, must say I was a little taken aback...
I am 5'10 and played football... not at this level, and not linebacker. 5'10 comes in all sizes, believe it or not... 5'10 220 playing linebacker would not be funny... 5'10 155 cracks me up.
|4 years 43 weeks ago||Playing Linebacker at 155lbs is indeed impressive...||
We should be able to recruit as many of those as we want...
|4 years 43 weeks ago||Filling needs||
Hopefully this is the last year where we use the "filling needs" excuse. Not that it isn't a valid justification for the past few years, but that is the biggest difference between where we are (where OSU is) and where we have been in the past.
Defensively this class ranks strong (haven't taken the time to figure out how strong), and likely top 10... That was our greatest need, and we filled it pretty nicely.
Hopefully going forward we focus on "best player" and "best athlete" and go after top recruits. It feels like there is some stability in our leadership/staff, and clearly a focus. You cannot be a top 10 class if you don't get top recruits. Next class will have around 20, so won't be rated top 10 either against schools with 25 recruits... but what we want to see is the USC model - get 5* guys, fill out with 4* guys and decide if any 3* guys are worthy... That's the ticket...
|4 years 43 weeks ago||Welcome back...||
Where the F#$% you been... We sent up the signal, looking for the all knowing Knowledge to bring calm...
Don't leave again, we need the guiding hand for fear we spin and churn in an unending cauldron of potentially horrific scenarios.
You are the Ritalin for our ADD...
|4 years 43 weeks ago||If he wanted to play at Michigan...||
He would have taken the CB offer, and just worked his tail off.
It is good that the coaches were clear with him up front, and ultimately it was his choice.
|4 years 43 weeks ago||?Espanol, no?||
I thought SIAP meant there was a spanish version available, figured I just needed a plug-in...
|4 years 43 weeks ago||defensive ranking?||
I would love to see where our class ranks defensively. We had a highly ranked offense last year, with few positions of need and little focus in this class. I am certain our defensive class ranks closer to top 10 which is huge considering our needs on D.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Very impressed...||
Tom, thank you.
I have been very impressed with the quality of indivitual the coaches have been pursuing. I have to say I want them all to join Michigan, and will be bummed when some choose to go elsewhere.
In your opinion, does it feel like the character of this class is maybe a step above most that you have gotten to know?
Seems that character is a bond linking the two coaching regimes as well, the recruits generally see solid character in the new staff, similar to what they liked in the old staff.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Just wanted to see how I look in 'retro web'||
|4 years 44 weeks ago||I think Tate will transfer...||
|4 years 44 weeks ago||RB||
He started most games last year, and will be bigger/stronger/faster next year. He has to know he can compete for the job and get playing time. All of those guys were there last year, and he got the carries. He stayed healthy and I would like to see what he does with a hole to burst through... Read Option sent him into a wall of defenders on many of his carries.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Not clear...||
Is this from Tosu, or osu = OK State?
Either way, damn the buckeyes!
|4 years 44 weeks ago||My 2010 prediction...||
7 and 6 with great frustration.
For 2011 I predict less frustration and a couple more wins. 9 - 4
Beat MSU and Iowa, but can't beat Tosu this year.
I would trade 5 wins for a win over Tosu. Living in Columbus while there winning really is not much fun.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Brilliant!||
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Big Will may shine in a 4-3 next to Martin...||
Someone commented that we should expect a 3-4 from GM, but I am hoping that is not the case... I guess we'll see
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Sorry Dark Blue...||
You and your girlfriend (avatar) should not be disrespected on this blog like you are.
Please accept my appology on behalf of the MgoNation.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||Ed Friggin' Reed...||
Greg Mattison joining the staff at UM, while coordinators are leaving PSU. Did I mention Greg Mattison has been coaching Ed Reed and Ray Lewis for the past 3 years?
Note: Trying to shine a little 'Brightside' to offset 'nowayguy' and his solid commentary.
I don't disagree that he needs to go where he will be happy... but he will be happiest at the greatest University in the world, learning under Greg Mattison and Brady Hoke.
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Any reason we can't start sending NFL alums to houses?||
Just wondered what would happen if Charles Woodson dropped by to tell Dallas Crawford to go Blue... Tell him he'd recommend him for the #2 jersey...
|4 years 45 weeks ago||I am glad to see they are going after Darian and others...||
Wish it wasn't too late for Crawford and Frost...
Lets see what this staff can come up with to close out the class.
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Power + Speed||
What did we all get sick of hearing about the M teams and Big 10 in general... Too slow.
This is a chance for Borgess to build out the power elements of his offense with a number of speed guys on the field at once...
He is like a kid in a candy shop. You don't have to be 220lbs to run in a power offense unless you are going to take 30+ reps... We have several different runners that could drive defenses crazy. Smith, Hopkins, Tousant, all have elements of power and speed, and Shaw is just raw speed. Add to that the RB lead with Denard running and it is a very nice running game.
Play action and you find WR's 'galore' wide open...
Oh, and we WILL have a defense, count on it.
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Hmmm... Who coached #2 at Michigan?||
Could it be, possibly, maybe Hoke and Mattison?
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Message: Come to Michigan, go to the NFL||
We need to start campaigning... Any defensive recruit that is not thinking of the possibilities with Mattison here is missing the obvious. Dude can coach, and can build NFL players...
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Big Will and Martin plugging the middle...||
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Not just Denard...||
Would be good if he could tweak for our smaller faster backs as well... Not your typical Pro-Style power backs... Hopkins, that's about it
|4 years 45 weeks ago||Wins...||
Denard is a team guy all the way. Wins = happiness
|4 years 46 weeks ago||soon Hoke will OWN tOSU||
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Technically, OSU is OK State...||
Oklahoma State owns "OSU"
|4 years 46 weeks ago||2 sec's left...||
I think we are going to beat the Buckeyes...
Damn that Evan Turner!
|4 years 46 weeks ago||I second the request for an updated banner||
Just don't use something cute like:
"Hoke is a many dreaded thing"...
I love the "Hope" version of the above...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||How did I miss this... Bummer||
I entered with and won a smaller group... All from the south, so at least they agree now that we can pick games up North.
My entry "Wounded Wolverine" won with 446pts.
I have to say that made all of the otherwise uninteresting bowls worth paying attention to.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Refresh key...||
We will be hitting F5 every 5 seconds today to see what we missed while reading for the last 4 seconds...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Pretty cool with the dark gray pants...||
Makes Auburn's uniforms look pretty dated.
I will add that this is the only Oregon uniform this year that didn't make me vomit in my mouth...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||You need less s in your Les||
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Hmmm...||
Rosenberg = Lemiwinks?
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Travelling through Ohio...||
Reminds me of "Lemiwinks' Journey"...
You know you laughed your Ars off...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Next year...||
These are off season roster add's for next season.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Kelly would be a top candidate if he hadn't gone to ND last year||
With the improvement they showed late, and the bowl win... I am afraid they are pulling away from us if we don't get this right.
Let's face it, we likely lose that game this year if Christ doesn't get hurt...
We need a great coaching hire, ASAP
|4 years 46 weeks ago||He was leaving 3 years ago...||
That deal was all but done, right down to the house hunting in AA... He would leave, and I don't think the last 3 years have been that much fun for him either. He is winning games, but not a pleasant environment and I would guess AA is looking pretty good. The football program sets up well - almost a lock for him to show improvement year 1.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||I feel your pain...||
I too am overly consumed by this. I don't know if the chest pains are because I am nervous and excited to see who we hire, or if it is the fear and dread that something aweful is coming our way.
Either way, I want to know now. I can't take this much longer...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Winning cures all...||
We absolutely need a coach that can come in here and win... And as I have stated earlier, a coach from neither faction that wins here will unite the base the fastest...
I am truly at the point where 'you are either part of the solution, or you're part of the problem"
New coach, get on board or get lost... All In for Michigan!
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Here's hoping DB has the marbles...||
It will take some serious courage to manage the inputs and make the right decision here. I am feeling more and more that we need a big name, big splash, that is NOT tied to LC or Bo... Whether the detailed account above is completely true or not, it is clear that there is a divide and warring factions within the UM power base...
We need to do what we did when we hired Bo... Start a new branch of the coaching family tree, and bring in a fiery, motivating, hard nosed winner...
How long until Mike Hart is ready... Can he be Head Coach in Waiting while he is still in the NFL?
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Bingo!||
If any of this division is true, the only solution is to start a brand new GRUDEN* era... Get on the bus or get lost...
Substitute any of the following:
Dungy, Patterson, Peterson, other solid HC with no ties to Michigan...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Agree...||
5 star players are all about getting ready for the NFL... They would see Gruden as a great way to prepare. 4 stars and 3 stars fill in behind superstars, and we quit fighting over 3 star players and begging them to come here.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||I believe...||
Gave me shivers...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Now is a great time to take the Michigan coaching job...||
Now that it is clearly a rebuilding process, and has hopefully started up from the bottom, this is a great situation for a new coach to step into.
Remember that we didn't know how bad the decay had been until after RR took over. Then we started to see how much work was needed to build this back up.
RR came in with an expectation of 10 wins a year... and empty cupboards to a large extent.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Kansas game...||
Wouldn't be at all surprised if there was an announcement or introduction Sunday...
Who is the big question, but my gut says they want to have it done fast, and that is a great opportunity to make a splash.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Cam Cameron...||
Can anyone sum up how he went from a possibility some years ago, to really not even in consideration.
I am not interested in him as our coach, trying to understand how he went from near the top of lists to nowhere on them...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Wasn't lack of execution RR's issue?||
I like Brandon, and I know there are still a lot of possible outcomes, a few of which might not spell doom... but I have not been more depressed about the program, ever.
The horror was a fluke, right...
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Prepared well... Had a plan...||
Just poor execution.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Pahokee?||
"What's unique about Pahokee is you can hunt, you can fish, and you can get vegetables"
- Rickey Jackson, Hall of Fame acceptance speech
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Duke Nuke'm...||
Or Doom... Whatever...
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Would be like learning...||
That Santa Clause's name was Chris Kringle... WTF?
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Monster...||
He looks so over-caffienated...
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Call it a 'not dark spot' if you prefer...||
... but imagine today if we had to return 8 kickoffs and were worried about fumbling every one of them.
He certainly did all he could do today.
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Living in Columbus for 20 years...||
I have to say guys like this are all over the place. They are basically the reason I don't like going to The Game down here.
The Buckeye fans that actually graduated from college are a little more bearable, and one-on-one most are fine. In packs, especially of dudes like this they are the worst.
OSU had 'open enrollment' for years, so just about everyone in the state went to OSU for at least part of a year... So they think they are better than your average Walmart variety, but not from my experience...
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Buckeye 'grad'...||
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Felt bad...||
I announced tonight at dinner that I couldn't wait until Saturday...
Then I explained to my in-laws that it wasn't because they fly out on Saturday, but rather that the game I had been waiting for since I can't even remember would finally be here.
I think they bought it...
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Prediction...||
If we win the B1G Tournament, I believe we will make the NCAA Tournament...
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Go to class...||
I can't think of any friends that flunked out who actually tried to stay in... Most were partying and blowing off school until it was too late to save, then they would scramble for a semester and then disappear...
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Awesome to see Odoms on the video...||
Glad to have him play... or stay for another year. Either way, glad he is part of the team...
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Dream within a dream...||
Sorry, just watched Inception with my son... Realized that the last 3 years might have just been a bad dream.
Would be awesome to wake up to a bowl win, some stability for another year, and headlines about buckeyes getting suspended... (was that real, or another nested dream?)
|4 years 48 weeks ago||Clarkie....||
you talking Singlerary for DC?
|4 years 48 weeks ago||So much depends on the coaching staff...||
I can see this class finishing very strong with the right answers on the coaching staff.
A strong defensive coach with name recognition would make us instantly relevant to several recruits that aren't leaning our way at the moment...
Unfortunately, a change of head coach will turn the class on its head, and we will be starting over with about half the class... Still could end up fine, but no sense trying to predict that mess.
|4 years 48 weeks ago||TP is a tool||
And would have given us headaches that would not have been offset by enough wins ...
|4 years 48 weeks ago||I still can't believe these Buckeyes sold rings and gold pants||
No surprised Herbie is hammering TP, and I can tell you the Buckeye alumni will not be happy about these guys selling BT championship rings and especially the Gold Pants...
I have lived in Columbus since graduating from UM in 1990, and my neighbor is a 4 year starter at tackle... The gold pants are their most coveted award, and it is egregious for these guys to sell them.
I can't think of any parallel in the UM world, but it seems to be a major disconnect between these current buckeyes and thier history and tradition.
Time to turn the tables... We are done losing to tOSU every year...
|4 years 49 weeks ago||Barry Sanders Jr||
Maybe Barry's son will play basketball here after he kills on the football field? Would be good to start (extend?) our tradition with son's of NFL studs...
|4 years 49 weeks ago||The Knowledge...||
Fire up the beacon, we need to summon the Knowledge to bring clarity and calm...
|4 years 49 weeks ago||Enrolling Early...||
He would not need to take a full load of classes, and could easily catch up depending upon what he is taking.
Missing 2 weeks will not be a big issue.
