I would be leery of going into a non-STEM grad program no matter what the positives were unless your parents are loaded; take it from a guy married to someone who just got a humanities PhD and ended up in a really good spot--adjunct at M--against all odds. It is rough out there for grad students who can't turn their degrees into industry jobs. |

Key part of first bit: "I don't know." Thanks for correcting me. The latter bits: there is no one assigned to the safety on the first play from scrimmage, and whatever Denard's reading on the option play does not appear to be the right thing to read. There is literally no one to block the LB on that. |

I just ran out of space by the time I was like "oh right, Michigan." By that point the column was 2500 words already. I think it was because I wasn't that bent out of shape since I mean, what can you do when you've got your backup in there and he's playing that badly? |
| 33 weeks 4 hours ago | I agree that the line's not |
I agree that the line's not blocking well but that Lewan block is tough though since at best you're going to be pushing a guy from a crappy angle; same with Mealer. Even if he picks the right guy, what are the chances he gets a block that keeps him out of the hole? I don't think they're good. It seems like M does not much faith in their ability to combo block DL and as a result puts their OL in tough spots on plays like this. |

OSU short circuited with some Miller turnovers or it would have been a lot uglier in that game -- Borges may be playing to prevent the INTs but can't do anything about fumbles, really, of which IIRC OSU had two painful ones. They did do a better job overall of moving the ball, and they're in year one of a Meyer offense with a sophomore. Of course, they had to because they never know when their defense is going to punch itself in the face. I don't think the criticism of Borges in this post is particularly harsh -- I mean, the first section is all about how they, you know, won. Instead of lost like against ND. |

If he decides right away that the LB is inside and bursts outside maybe he does run away from the pursuit; I don't think that's natural or realistic. |

Unfortunately, that process is going to take a while because some critical modules are still not updated. So the site will remain static until then; when I move to 7 the full glory of pos/negbangs will return. Prepare thy anus. If you are a coder who wants to accelerate this process, the best thing to do is take some drupal 6 modules and update them for the latest version. If you're interested, email me. On each of the first four interceptions there is an defender in the thrower's face. Three of them are unblocked, the other was a very good pass rusher against redshirt frosh FB Kerridge. That's a failure. The alternatives there are sacks. Denard screwed up. Borges did too. You don't have a "fine" game by putting Denard in a position no QB excels in over and over. The converse of all the people criticizing me for not criticizing Denard enough are the people who think Borges was "fine" in his fifth complete debacle in 11 attempts. But it's all on Denard, okay. Ron Zook had a fine game, you guys. John L is fine, you guys. |

Also there was no offense that fit Threet and Sheridan's skillsets because they had none, especially w/ Threet as a freshman. |

It's tough for Demens because there is absolutely no delay at the LOS for that guy. Even if he doesn't get cut he still has to go around that guy and will be delayed long enough to be out of the play. Last year, Michigan would punish that because you just singled up Martin or RVB or whoever. This year (against this opponent) Roh and Ryan get annihilated. I do agree he shouldn't get cut that easy, thus the minus, but this is by no means all on him. |

all players always drop on average because they are in the top 1% of high school prospects and as time goes along other guys get unearthed. If we're talking more than 10 spots then that's an actual drop. otherwise, it's just time passing. |

I'm not sure since I can't get any data for subsections of URLs (ie freep.com/sports) from Quantcast and the like. But the site is about 15-20% of the entire freep.com site so... it might be close. They have not reached out to me, which is a disappointment because I would love crafting that reply. |
| 1 year 1 week ago | Generic donations on the OSU |
Generic donations on the OSU side are donations to the "Buckeye Fund" and clearly should be added to ticket revenue. Most of the generic donations on the Michigan side are mandatory seat PSLs. A small amount is not specified; my assumption is that those are people raising their victors points levels to get seats or get better seats. In any case, the difference in ticket revenue alone between the two schools is negligible. |

It's not hard to be missing core class A or core class B and have to jump through a lot of clearinghouse hoops. You pretty much have to have a plan if you're going to be a recruitable athlete, and that sort of plan is not one that CHL teams are going to encourage. With the USHL in place there's no reason for college to open itself up to former junior players. You want to be Jack Campbell, be Jack Campbell. Don't come crying back to us after you get traded to the Soo. |

| 1 year 26 weeks ago | That is simply untrue. The |
That is simply untrue. The season preview was considerably more optimistic than the average prediction. http://mgoblog.com/content/preview-2011-heuristics-and-stupid-prediction Find me something more optimistic than "A fully healthy Michigan looks like a (fringe) contender for a division crown, but football teams are not fully healthy" and a prediction of 8-4 with 9-3 more likely than than 7-5 that wasn't written by a 13 year old on Bleacher Report. What I did argue for was a heavy shotgun based offense that revolves around Denard's legs, and worried that its lack would lead to poor performance. That prediction was borne out precisely both in wins and losses. |

| 1 year 27 weeks ago | Except there is a 100% chance |
Except there is a 100% chance this would have happened if Michigan was the home team. The home/away distinction is one Brandon does not care about, obviously, and so people insisting that changing the uni for the fifth time in a single season is anything like what happened before is okay because it's just the away uniform is weird. Yeah, there are stripes and stuff that come and go. This is a totally different thing. Okay, Michigan makes slight alterations to the away jersey every five years or so. Granted. That has nothing to do with this. |
| 1 year 27 weeks ago | You miss the point entirely, |
You miss the point entirely, but your wish is my command. For people saying they "like these," there is no "these." There is only a steady procession of dumb ideas, some of which are not quite as awful as the others. The point is when you have a good idea, you stick with it, because good ideas are rare and **branding is about consistency.** Unless you're explicitly not about consistency, like Oregon. We are not Oregon, and trying to be Oregon hurts us. Dave Brandon knows how to direct mail old people about crap they don't want and how to sell crappy generic pizza. He evidently has no idea how to care care of an established, beloved brand. |

It's either a gameplan that went awry or historically poor FS play, so... yeah. I think the difference between post 1 (doom) and post 2 (PBU) may indicate Mattison expects Countess to be able to make that play consistently. This may be because he doesn't know how good Posey is, thinks Braxton can't throw, or is trying some NFL stuff that doesn't work on this level. Or it just could be players messing up. If I get an opportunity Heiko (or I) will ask. I'm planning on hippie-bombing a couple of coaching clinics this spring. |

| 1 year 28 weeks ago | "Someone's going to be left |
"Someone's going to be left out" is a bad argument. There is a massive difference between leaving out undefeated teams, as often happens now, and leaving out Kansas State/Arkansas/Wisconsin, as would happen in a limited playoff. Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good. |
| 1 year 28 weeks ago | Your opening paragraph seems |
Your opening paragraph seems to invalidate all of college football. Yeah, the games are random and there aren't enough to actually make a determination. That problem is intractable; I don't try to address it. What the playoff proposal does do is give you a team that definitively had the best season, something that the BCS basically never does. The ideal number of teams in a playoff this year is one: LSU. But usually it's not so clear cut and even when it seems that clear cut you get things like OSU-Miami or OSU-Florida that totally invalidate your RANDOM STUPID GUESS as to who the top team is, let alone the top two. |

| 1 year 29 weeks ago | You don't want to get too |
You don't want to get too aggressive taking on that block because it can go badly if the RB bounces and you don't have any support. Black's play is stanard when the LBs aren't shooting behind you on a specific playcall. When in doubt, assume the defense wants the player to go inside of the EMLOS. |
