Still, this kid was hyper accurate much of the time, made some incredibly clutch plays for them. It's not an Alabama thing where the kid finishes with a great career record because he hands the ball off. They would have lost several games, probably 4-5?, the last two years with a Hackenberg-type equivalent. He was inconsistent though, disappearing from games against even bad opponents. It is odd. That apparently all summed up to a big "nah" from nfl teams

I missed the comments in the last round, but the Harbaugh/Drevno exchange doesn't seem that awkward to me. Harbaugh unfairly changes at the last minute (he even fucks with people he's celebrating with) and Drevno actually sort of pulls off the switch. There's no uncomfortable eye contact or accidental penis brush. This is a middle aged white guy moment that could have very much gone off the rails, but they both still turn toward the field and grin satisfactorily. I'll be disappointed if that keeps moving on.

"Most are split between Clark and Stribling". Harbaugh has said Stribling is a "locked in stone" starter. They've got him well ahead of Clark.
2nd round or higher is outrageous for a player who's currently a backup and found himself lost on a lot of balls. I've never seen the hips on Clark that would suggest he could consistently stay with and beat NFL wide receivers, which is what you need at 2nd round levels. He'd be a project at the moment, late or undrafted free agent. If he improves his play and shows what's needed for a 2nd round pick, this will be a scary good defense.

You also forgot Butt (which, how?), and Darboh who's going to get fl drafted mid rounds if he has the breakout year many are talking about. Stribling also has a chance to get drafted mid-late based on his performance (though this is much longer shot, we don't know, but size everyone loves these days is there), as do both Thomas and Hill. Thomas has all the speed and athleticism you'd want in a safety, if he's a playmaker and executes his assignments he could go high adyer a breakout year on a dominant defense. Hill is huge, strong, and fast, he'll test well at the combine (hopefully) or pro day; if he improves and makes plays he could go mid rounds as well. Again lots of variance on those 3, but I'd bet at least one of them goes mid rounds or bether (probably Thomas).
Also bet someone will fall in love with Braden's size and take him late. Lots of starts in the B1G, he could prove something this year.

From my ballplaying days she got it exactly right: ball that could have been in the gap, straddle second and third until you know. If it's caught you're probably not advancing anyway, and if it drops and you're waiting on second you may not make it home, depending on how that ball comes off the wall. Maybe she wasn't listening to Hutch on 3rd, in which case I recant - got to listen to the 3rd base coach if theyve got a preference on that, especially if it's the head coach.

And of those, what assistants would talk to Tennessee staff members and say "yeah it's too much, I don't like doing it." That would be criticizing the head coach's decision to do that at all. I'm calling bullshit on that statement.
“I’ve not been a proponent of satellite camps. I think they’re so much, and ironically we’ve spoken to many schools that have done the satellite camps, and quietly their assistant coaches were tired and wore out and didn’t approve of it. So I thought a right decision was made there."

He steps toward her, not looking her in the eye, his pace quickening as he closes the distance. Now he catches her gaze, but can't maintain it. He needs to hold her.
"We did it...", eyes moistened and gleaming over with the white light of mid-day, "we thought of the children." She collapses in his arms as they allow themselves to surrender to the tears which only their struggle - their very personal struggle - can bring.

I'm a bit concerned that Stribling's breakout spring is similar to Bolden's: he knows the plays, he knows the personnel, he takes advantage and makes a lot of splash plays in in practice, particularly int's against new/learning QB's.
That said I've always thought the two were at about the same performance level, and it's difficult to see how they can be ranked as "in a battle" when the coach has declared one as the clear starter over the other.

I agree, he consistently owned the spot and ripped aside his man when he wanted, ready to make the tackle. The ball just went away from him on a lot of those plays. I think Cole did get him buried on a blindside down block (to the extent a NT can be blindsided), but he won that game vs his competition. Though oddly he doesn't seem to be able to push the pocket on passing downs. He seems very ordinary then, needs to be lower or get better technique, though perhaps his job is just to maintain the pocket front and not get lost.

Bolden did not go out to win. He slammed a stake in the ground in what I saw as a silly attempt at bravado. He then got blocked and mowed down for the entire game. There's a reason they moved Glasgow over there last year and immediately moved Cole over this year, despite Kugler being old enough and having every opportunity to win the job. |4 weeks 3 days ago||He did have a few plays where||
He did have a few plays where he was walled off, and I think they may have been noticeable because they were on runs for decent gains - I think he may have been somewhat of a culprit on the Isaac-caught-by-Peppers run, for example. But that happens to all DT's, in my opinion you can't be expected to win every play. I mean the coaches can demand that, but as a totally unqualified observer even great players get beat several times a game. Generally I saw Godin do what he does: hit a blocker and turn/squirm to get some penetration and either get some TFL or disrupt the play to get it for others. The way he does it he kind of goes in like a shard with momentum so it's hard for him to break down and adjust to a moving RB/QB. But he does make those guys adjust or trips up pulling guards and the like. I've always liked him, don't understand why people were saying he'd be a candidate for a RS senior handshake.
He may not see as much time with Glasgow/Mone and Hurst/Wormley if they're going to have Charlton/Gary at SDE, but he's a great depth player and guy to come in off the bench. Great luxury for what should be a great DL.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||And I really hope Hill wins||
And I really hope Hill wins the permanent full-time FB job, not just move TE (I realize there's some overlap there). He's mean and just crushes people, though a lot of that is on crackbacks. It's the kind of punishing football that makes opposing players keep their head on a swivel, slows them down, and eventually just want to go home. But can he block head up every down, and can he carry that ball several times a game. If he can, he's just a fantastic weapon out of the backfield in the flat. Both to pick up yards and dish out additional punishment.

Didn't make it through the entire game, but quick thoughts. Really impressed with Devin Bush Jr. as I think everyone was: great instincts and thumping already. McCray was a highlight as well. I liked Carlo Kemp as well, maybe not right away, but he'll get time this year. Reuben Jones, despite the one good pass rush, got pushed around a lot; redshirt for him.
Godin was good, but Mone even better. They were beating the guards fairly easily as you'd expect them to. Ian Bunting's blocking was well ahead of what I expected, that kid is going to be good this year. Newsome struggled, I agree. He looks to be a ways away. I'd say Cole moves back to LT, but Kugler was pretty bad at times as well. I like Runyan at guard for next year. Shallman unfortunately looks lile he will only be remembered at Michigan for his hair and that kangaroo

I agree Perry looks like the clear #3, and I'm happy with that. Catches everything, good routes, willing blocker. Great #3 option with Butt/Chesson/Darboh worrying opponents. You can tell his QBs trust him and look for him in a pinch, and that goes back high school where Malzone did the same. They're working him outside as well, not sure if that's so he can back up Chesson and Darboh or if it helps with different personnel packages. If the former that does concern me a bit about Harris and their trust in him, but that's difficult to say at this point. I think it just means they really like Perry, and that's a great thing.
Harris showing that go up and get it like we know he's got, but doesn't seem to do as much on non-go routes. Perry gets open always, and Harris needs to do that. I imagine he needs to improve on his blocking as well.
Mitchell has probably benefited tremendously by enrolling early, and there's reason to think with a Fall camp he may set himself up for some snaps and prep for a starter's role next year. Though I'd really like to see Ways realize his potential too.

|7 weeks 22 hours ago||I'm not arguing against what||
I'm not arguing against what you're saying. What I'm talking about is the Justice Department pressuring colleges to change their approach to disciplining/expelling students accused of sexual misconduct on campus. There have been several cases where this has seemed to overreach and lead to damaging consequences against the falsely accused (the infamous Rolling Stone article on UVA is one that comes to mind). Though I'm sure in others it's brought justice where there was none previously.
But I'm not even arguing the correctness of the approach. What I'm saying is that in many of those cases, there was no evidence, nothing to go on but what she said and what he said. And in many of those cases the he was expelled. This is due to the DOJ and the new standard they applied.
The case I cited above has much, much more evidence than those others (UVA, Gibbons), including a corroboration of the alleged victim's story. Why didn't MSU decide on their own (as UM did with Gibbons), or why weren't they pressured by the DOJ (as they did with other colleges) to take similar action? If MSU didn't want to take action, why weren't they forced to?

What's worse, they seem to be focused on why Brady destroyed his cell phone. How is this even a question? Destroying devices with confidential data on them is smart in today's world, and by itself does not indicate any wrongdoing. Isn't this a fundamental undermining of our system? In other words they're saying, "we think you destroyed this phone for ill purposes, prove to us that you did not." Isn't that a presumption of guilt rather than innocence?

Denard needs to focus on being a running back, and most importantly holding onto the football. His pass pro needs some work too. I love him for life, but every time he's played well in the pros he's followed it with fumbles. I don't think an NFL team can trust him to consistently return balls or catch them at the slot postion. He needs to be a back-up somewhere, not fumble, have some big runs or games along the way, and establish himself as a vet.

Alabama also has a much stronger record of success. We're not in that territory yet. We played one elite team last year and got killed. I say Sparty was a fluke and we should have won that game, but even accepting the loss it was a very even affair. And they were demolished by Alabama. It's fair, in my mind, to ask if Michigan would have been similarly beaten against them. In that context - meaning OSU, Alabama, setting the benchmark as top-tier teams - the #3 ranking does seem too high.
Alabama switched QBs, sure. But they had a bone-crushing OL and the Heisman winner at RB. M doesn't have that, based on what's coming back. In order to be truly elite, M is going to need outstanding QB play. Straight verticals to Chesson that connect, deep corner routes on both sides of the field, that sweet square-in that Chesson and Rudock ran twice last year, all of it. That stuff will be open even if the running game isn't top notch, and would allow Michigan to beat truly elite teams even if the defense has breakdowns. But that type of QB play is definitely a question.
Lacking a great OL or running game - remember we abandoned it completely at the end of the year -, M needs great QB play to be elite. I think we can win the conference with incremental improvement over last year. But we won't beat Alabama (or whoever beats Alabama) in the playoff without it.

Has there been a write-up yet on this site re. Don Brown's D, detailing this specific lack of Buck? I know there have been a few write-ups on his philosophy in general and Seth's review of his scheme against Clemson. In those write-ups he's generally said the scheme is the same as what M ran last year.
But I'd really like to know how the Buck's disappearance affects the D and personnel. Losing RJS and Ojemudia was a concern this year. To the extent it's been discussed, the thought was Charlton to Buck but dubious if he could cover the flat in pass pro. If that's out the window, I imagine we have to be running a 4-2-5. No way they push Peppers back to a true safety in order to bring another LB onto the field.
But where does that push Kemp, who was specifically a Buck?
|12 weeks 2 days ago||Defense isn't prioritized.||
Defense isn't prioritized. And frankly they're allowed to get away with poor effort. That's on Beilein. It may have been Novak and Morgan that demanded that effort and held the team accountable, because no one is doing it now.
It's also impossible to take a charge now, which was a hallmark of Beilein defense. If one could say it ever had a hallmark.

I disagree. The constant targeting of him despite the low likelihood of actually getting a completion put their offenses behind the sticks. OC's hate to be behind the sticks. I think it was a case of looking at the run defense, noping out of that, seeing the high safety, figuring that the only way to make hay was to "break" Lewis. I think OC's continually challenged their guys, saying the only way they could win was to beat Lewis. Didn't work. Not much did unless you had a spread like Indiana or OSU, sure. But throwing at Lewis most often meant 2nd & 10 went to 3rd &10 or 3rd & 10 went to punt. Go at the other corner with your second best receiver, or try the LB's with a TE. Lewis passed all the tests, he should have been avoided.

I don't think that's true. Godin spent much of the early part of the season starting in front of Wormley, with mgobloggers asking why is the back-up starting the game? He wasn't the back-up, he was the starter. It was a platoon/rotation and the starter distinction didn't really matter bc they always got equal snaps and sometimes the second guy got more. But Godin played a lot early and played quite well, was hurt, and probably played hurt late. Was his good play a function of poor OL's early and he wasn't as effective in conference play? Possibly, but injury really sapped him late, he was a shadow of his earlier year self.
Strobel came in for rotation snaps when Glasgow went dowm, and he stuggled.

I'd rather not have a negative back and forth as well, but a meaningful one is always appreciated. I don't think it's unreasonable to define DC as running the defense. I've perhaps naively assumed everyone has that same view. As an extreme example, RR was a head coach, apparently had almost no involvement with the Defense (except meddling/demaning 3-3-5). Would his head coaching experience qualify him for a Power 5 DC spot? I don't think so. By that logic, I'd say just by virtue of being a head coach, one is not qualified to be a DC.
Yes Hoke is different, he did an excellent job here on the DL and he has experience in various defensive positions over his career. But that's different than being a DC, and "coaching the defense", which gameplanning and playcalling.

2) You're not refuting any point I'm making. I did not disparage any of his prior experience.
The claim I'm making is that he hasn't coached a defense as the defensive coordinator. This is true. Calling people asinine in a reasoned discussion makes you and your argument appear weak.
Hoke defenders as defensive as those who do the same for RR. I root for Hoke, I always will, just as I do for RR. I've met both. They gave everything they had. But they both failed, and I'm glad neither is coach at Michigan.
My pointing out that he has never been a DC (with the exception of Yorktown, Indiana High) does not mean I'm belittling the man. I'm stating a truth that's relevant to the topic of him taking over DC at Oregon. Your overreaction is an indication that you probably went all-in on Hoke, and having a difficult time accepting his failure. I did the former as well, but I'm long past the latter.

First, I haven't taken all the credit away from him. I'd give him a lot of credit for hiring Mattison. Second, the comparison here is a poor one: Kelly was an OC for 7 years at New Hampshire and 2 years at Oregon; Hoke was a DC never.

They weren't very good vs. OSU (burned completely in the first half, overthrown by Barrett), Iowa (burned on the lone long ball I saw them throw), Michigan (lots of opportunities lost in that game in terms of deeper throws, was before Rudock became the deep ball assassin he was in the later half of the year), Nebraska (err'body open all day), and others.
But S&P has them ranked #10 in Passing D, even above Michigan's (though Sparty is rated poorly on passing downs). I think more teams should have gone deep more often, but I always think that against MSU. Data says they're not that bad. But I'd bet a good QB and good receivers can make a lot of hay against those DB's. M has the latter, let's hope they come up with the former.

Fewer people argue on either side, given the distance time's put between that experience. But many people do still argue this topic, and when they do, Casteel is mentioned most often. If your agrument is that not as many people make that argument anymore, you should state that. But this is not what a strawman is. And when you falsely call people out for utlizing a strawman, you should take care that you do not use a strawman to do so.

"The OP makes it sound like people think we'd have won multiple national championships if Casteel had been hired in 2008, which I haven't seen anyone make any assertion even close to that in about 6 years."
Talk about a strawman. The OP doesn't mention anything about multiple national championships. He clearly states that he's arguing against The number one excuse for Rich's failure in A2", that being his inability to hire the guy he wanted in Casteel. I agree with him that for RR defenders, this is their primary argument. RR firing him today does refute that argument, because he couldn't make it work with Casteel in Arizona.
"but if you paint the vast majority of the users as thinking that way then you're just another Mike Valenti."

The OP is not at all a strawman. The primary argument around here has been the University was too cheap to hire Casteel, because he's the defensive guy that runs the system RR is comfortable with.

this is not at all what happened with Weber. Sam Webb's source on Weber is his good friend Tom Wilcher, who was at the dinner table with the kid and Harbaugh the night before NSD, where he said he was going to Michigan. Then overnight his friend worked on him, he heard about Higdon, presumably was talked out of it by the OSU staff, and flipped back to OSU. He didn't shut anything down, given he was considering and reconsidering his decision literally hours before and the day of NSD.
He had a hard choice, OSU made a great pitch, Harbaugh was someone he'd only known for a few weeks. Seemed like he was 50-50 and made a decision.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||1) the backup immediately||
1) the backup immediately looked more urgent than Hackenberg, more energy. Hack always looks lethargic, by his body language he seemed to be complaining about his OL. After every sack looks of disappointnent, anger, or whining. Contrast all of that with Gardner, who played hurt, led, and always gave credit to his teammates for trying their best. He sucked it up after very play and never gave and indication of blaming anyone. And he had every right to do so. Champion heart.
2) this is a small thing to many I'm sure, but it meant a lot to me: immediately after the loss, they zoomed in on Hackenberg and he was smiling and pointing at someone on the Georgia sideline on the way to shake hands. Evidently a friend and harmless enough. But this is immediately after the hail mary was batted down and the other camera shots were either of Georgia players storming the field euphoric or his teammates kneeling on the ground in exhausted defeat. PSU fought back and really put everything into winning that game. When they lost the players were crushed. Except Hackenberg, he didn't give a shit. You'll notice he also didn't thanks his teammates. Wouldn't want him on my pro team.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||M doesn't need him to create||
M doesn't need him to create on his own, Beilein's offense has never required that. He needs to finish when he's dished from the outside, and he needs to play competitive D without fouling out. Somewhere just below average rebounding wold be fine. That's all this team needs. We got crushed against Xavier/Uconn/SMU because we got none of that from the 5.
Beilein's team is built around shooters first, that's the entire point. Then he can take advantage of that with plays that get the ball inside for easy finishes. When playing MSU/Purdue/Maryland, those finishes will be under more duress than they were against Illinois and PSU, but what you're talking about - hit or threaten from the outside and let that open up the inside - is exactly what they want to do. He has a team full of shooters that he's recruited to make sure if any one or two cool off, others can pick it up. Will everyone shoot poorly some nights? Of course, and they may lose to someone they shouldn't. The same thing will happen to Duke or Xavier or Maryland when their players are cold at executing whatever styles those teams practice.
An effective Donnal, and backed up by serviceable Doyle or Wagner, and this team's ceiling goes from bubble (when 5 was a disaster weeks ago) to outside chance at B1G title.

Wow, WSU corner plays 7 yards off the WR on 4th and goal from the four, and backpedals at the snap. Miami WR runs 4 yards and turns around on the goal line for one of the easiest TDs I've seen in a while. CB didn't realize he was standing in the end zone?

So if we had lost to Bryant last night, you would consider that the same as losing to Xavier?

Hoke's never been a DC, and didn't wear a headset as HC. He's oddly qualified for the latter (at a significant step down from Michigan) given his ability to delegate and recruit, but I'm not sure anyone would hire him for the former.

Any thread title that reminds me of either of these shit parties - especially on the weekend - gets an auto neg from me.
So I'll do my part to get it deleted. Trump is a national embarrassment, and Clinton as a feminist icon after being dependent on, then humiliated by, her philandering (and possibly rapey, based on accusations) husband is a joke that not enough people seem to be in on.

Seattle's Bryce Brown at home vs terrible Cleveland, or Danny Amendola at home against terrible Tennessee?
Edelman appears out, helping Amendola. Brown will be the starting RB for a team that should dominate, but literally off the street and has scored zero points this season. And Jackson will steal 3rd down touches (though I suppose he did that to Rawls too). Hard for me to start a WR over a first string RB. Thoughts are appreciated

I saw OSU play Northern Illinois last week and they seemed disinterested and unsure of themselves. Northern Illinois seemed to miss every shot they took, and not because OSU was playing great defense. It was a snoozer I kept on the background with a margin of about 6 points for most of the game, but OSU did pull away late.
Very surprised to see they beat UK, good win for the B1G, but I'm not sure how they did it. They must have played much harder than they against NIU.

Sam said this morning that McDoom to Oregon has had some effect on Crawford, where originally he didn't think it would. He did mention that he doesn't say a lot publically about what he's thinking.
Sam's words were, paraphrased, "Michigan is in very, very good position for Pie Young, and now in a good position for Crawford." Something along those lines.

I think they offered him with the idea that he'd come in as a FB. Get a chance at LB, but be open to FB. He was OK with that last spring, but it's dwindled a bit since he has more options. Michigan letting him walk without offering an early enrollee spot, despite one opening up with Richardson coming off, does seem to indicate a lower interest on their end.
|20 weeks 2 days ago||Understood on the s/||
But just a little futher info. on Johnson, his ratings have improved since the Michigan offer and commitment.
First, Touch The Banner really liked him even back then, giving him a 77 rating, with Magnus saying he wouldn't be surprised if someone told him he was a four star. Physical player with speed, good in coverage.
Beyond that, he went from unranked at Scout, ESPN, and 247 and a two star at Rivals, to a 3 star on all sites. In fact 247 has him as the #25 ILB in the country. That's just a few spots down from where they have Devin Bush Jr. (#18), and a guy we let walk away in David Reese (#21). Good reason to be excited about this kid.
