hoping the fact that we haven't heard much about your health lately means that your health is not an issue anymore. If it still is, then you have a lot of character to keep it on the down low and focus on the job regardless, because that's not easy. Keep up the good work and it's good to see that you enjoy your job.
|1 week 4 days ago||Few factors||
1. Our out-of-conference schedule is trash
MSU plays ND and BYU
OSU plays Oklahoma
We play nobody. So our SOS should be the worst of the three
2. As always, it matters when you lose. Losing to MSU early and beating OSU late (with OSU beating MSU the 2nd-to-last week of the season) would be the best scenario with a 11-1 record.
|1 week 5 days ago||As a relatively new fan||
it's interesting to see the different stadiums. Watching Everton vs Spurs on the TV, in what I would consider a "normal" multi-deck stadium, and streaming the Burnley game that's in this little dinky stadium with a single deck on the sides. The stadium capacities differ so much.
|1 week 5 days ago||Thanks for reminding me||
I forgot about this with the Olympics going on. Already some intriguing things happening with Hull beating the former champs; apparently it's been four years since a promoted team won its first game.

were Maryland and Purdue. They can be scary, but they actually don't win that much. Dantonio has never lost to them (7-0), and that includes a win the year MSU went 7-5 with Maxwell (2012). You can be in a close game with IU, but you have to be pretty bad to actually lose to them.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||I agree||
No matter how badly we want them to crash and burn with Cook gone, O'Connor isn't that big a dropoff and they should be good for 9-3 this year with U-M, OSU, and Wisconsin all at home. Only tough road game is ND.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Not much compared to most||
1. Buying my house. I never lived in an apartment after school and went straight from my parents' house to buying my own house. Putting down 20% required a lot of saving, and there were stressful times living with the parents while I was saving up and looking for houses. Dad kicked me out for a couple weeks because we had a disagreement over the cable. I just had to get out and it felt so good to have my own house.
2. U-M graduation, master's in ChemE. I was so tired of school and so glad to be done. Didn't have a job lined up and didn't care; I was just drained from the workload and the stress
3. Getting my job. Only a few months after graduation, so I didn't have to wait too long. Still working the same job 15 years later. I'm definitely a lifer here.
4. U-M acceptance. I didn't even really apply anywhere else (just MSU), so if I didn't get in, I would have been crushed.
5. Rose Bowl 1998. Great trip to California and a great year to be a football fan.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Interesting to watch the technique||
I'm not a football guy at all, but there's so much skill there with the hand placement, hips, timing, etc. Sometimes I watch football players and think "that doesn't look too hard." This is not one of those times. There's no way in hell I could do any of that.

One was not bad looking, but at that time she got around a lot and I didn't want to be a part of that. I honestly wasn't sure about her STD status because she slept with some fairly shady characters. Not total deadbeats, but dudes that got around a lot themselves. I mean, "ARE YOU CLEAN?" is not really something you can ask a girl. I figured she was a gold digger and she just saw dollar signs when I got my job and bought a house. She grew up a lot, though -- married an honest guy and is living a great family life with kids now.
The other one was not as good looking but had her head on straight. I shouldn't have been so picky.
I didn't realize how slim the pickings would get as I got older. Neither one of those ladies were no-doubt-about-it knockouts, but either would have been better than the nothing I have now.

In all of my fandom, the most satisfying game I have ever witnessed. There were no moments of trepidation or concern because it was over so early. It was so nice to experience a big game where the stress was relieved right away and the second half was just one big victory cigar.
Strangely, it didn't have the dorm comraderie of the hockey championship (everybody on the hall high-fived after that one) and most people had gone on to do other things by the second half.

whether it the was the 30 for 30 or some other one, but like you I'd never heard of the incident before watching and came in blind. This was an absolutely horrifying incident in every way.
1. Standing only sections with no assigned seats
2. Enclosed pens where the fences along the pitch bent back at the top with sharp tips on them so people wouldn't climb over them
3. A ton of people at the gate that don't have a ticket just hoping to get let in when they (inevitably) open an exit gate to relieve pressure at the turnstiles.
When they showed the crowd outside the turnstiles and the cops trying to maintain order (it was basically a riot out there), I could already see ahead of time how things could spiral out of control, and they certainly did. Some of the pictures are just...wow.

4-0. I don't know anything about Swansea, but they looked like a team that can't play from behind (17th in GF) and they gave up a goal 10 mins in. So that game fell apart in a hurry.
I've just happened to get into EPL for the first time this year, simply because I found the games were at an ideal time -- mornings on the weekend when there is literally nothing else going on. It's great.
I like the perfectly balanced schedule, no playoffs. The refs are horrible, though. The penalty they called last week to bail out Leicester against West Ham was some top-grade bagman bullshit.

|19 weeks 4 days ago||I didn't say pickup drivers are horrible people||
I said they are the most likely to road rage me. Which they are. It may be 5% of engagements/provacations (honking your horn at them after they cut you off) become a full road rage, or 1%, or whatever, it's more than any other type of vehicle. Therefore, I do not provoke people in pickups by honking my horn at them.
I will honk a horn at other vehicles that are less dangerous, though. Like hybrids and minivans. I've never been raged by either of those. The day I get raged by a hybrid or minivan is the day I stop honking my horn at them.
|19 weeks 4 days ago||I guess I should only be worried about GMs then||

|19 weeks 4 days ago||True||

|19 weeks 4 days ago||No, I agree with you completely||
I'm as exasperated as anybody
|19 weeks 4 days ago||Those two aren't the only two times I've been road raged||
I've been raged probably a dozen times in my life, mostly by pickup drivers. The NRA comment was a political view more than anything
|19 weeks 4 days ago||OK, sorry, you win||
see, this is how I deal with drivers on the road. Open passivity. Please, please don't shoot me while I'm just trying to get to work
|19 weeks 4 days ago||They are more likely to shoot me||
I just play the statistics. I don't worry about people driving hybrids. I do worry about people driving pickup trucks.
|19 weeks 4 days ago||It'll get political||
and involve talking about gun control, which is a no-go here
|19 weeks 4 days ago||Just awful -- I worry about this on the commute||
Not every day, mind you, but I do think about it. I had two bad ones in the same week that sort of freaked me out for a while. The first one was a lady that apparently thought I did a Michigan U too close to her and decided she needed to run me off the road. She said she was going to shoot me before traffic caught up and started honking at her, at which point she left.
The other one was some punk kid -- we had a tie at a stop sign, and apparently he thought he was first and I cut in front of him (I was making a right and he was across making a left -- with no turn signal, mind you), so he chased me all throughout my own neighboorhood. I got stuck behind a car that was backing out of a driveway and he did a lawn job to get ahead of me and just sat there and taunted me for a minute. I should have written down his license plate (since he conveniently put himself in front of me), but I am not that quick on my feet in those situations.
Either way, it's been a while since I was road raged because I am a very passive driver now and don't engage anybody. I don't honk my horn when people are cutting me off on purpose. I used to block lane jumpers or people that try to drag race from the light before their right lane merges/disappears. Not anymore, it's just not worth it. I let people in pickup trucks do whatever they want; they are the most aggressive and unstable drivers, and who knows which ones are NRA supporters.
|19 weeks 5 days ago||I did Stronglifts for about a year||
I plataeued completely at 3 months because I'm not eating enough calories (nor do I want to). I just maintain now and space the five main lifts over 4 days instead of 3 and add a few extra exercises and cardio. So, an ideal week (which rarely happens) is
Monday -- dead lift, pull ups, decline sit ups, 2 mile run (just started running again)
Tuesday -- squat, bench, russian twists, 20 mins on the elliptical because my legs are dead and I can't run
Wednesday -- off. This is basically leg soreness day
Thursday -- bent-over row, overhead press, curls, decline sit ups, 2 mile run
Friday -- squat, push ups, russian twists, elliptical
I plan to add maybe a run on Saturday and push ups on Sunday. Hard to be motivated on the weekend when the weather is crap.

thank god the bathrooms are at least clean in the dorm and you don't have to fight over who does the cleaning
|20 weeks 59 min ago||This was a course where engineers had a very real advantage||
I took this to fill out my 3-course elective sequence. The math 215 prereq is no joke, and I think a lot of people that took it had either never seen a partial differential equation before or they didn't realize there was going to be that much math. I loved the course and it was not difficult for me, but it was definitely a huge step up in the math from 101/102
|20 weeks 1 hour ago||Two big ones||
ChE 360 (lab 1). I think this course has been revised significantly from when I took it in the late 90s, but you worked your ass off for a B in this course. We did 1 calibration report and 3 full reports, and think the semester before did 1 and 4. The full reports are 20+-page technical reports with lit search, backgrounds, and full data analysis with charts/graphs. Forced lab partners means one of your partners will either be dropping out for LSA or going through some mental crisis and never show up for meetings.
I really hated the group projects with forced partners all throughout undergrad -- I think the idea is that "well, you're going to have to work as a team on the job, and you won't get to choose your partners" which is BS because you're not going to be working with people you hardly know while under that much time pressure.
ChE 528 taught by Fogler. Fogler was on sabbatical when I took 344 in undergrad. Got him in grad school, though, and the struggle is real. Great course and I learned a lot, but the workload is extreme. It's like he doesn't even realize you're taking three other courses at the same time. We used an ODE solver called Polymath at the time, and the syntax/debugging was so frustrating at times -- so much time wasted just trying to get Polymath to work.
Other courses were plenty difficult, but these two stood out for me. It's usually not one course by itself, but the accumulated workload of four courses at a time that can just crush you.

War in Greek and Roman Civilization -- humanity requirement; show up and get an A
Astro 101 -- Does this class fulfill the QR requirement for LSAs? There were a lot in there that couldn't do simple math, which is like a feast for engineers. Mean test scores way lower than I expected.
Accounting 101 -- It's just addition and subtraction, people
AOSS -- whatever the intro course is. I can't remember if this fulfilled an engineering elective or not, but it was easy.
MSE 250 -- used to fulfill an engineering elective for chemical engineers, but it's required now. Pretty much everyone took it even when it was an elective.

After spending the last seven years laughing at our recruiting classes and how STARZ DON'T MATTER, they've suddenly changed their tune after they got trucked by Alabama. 3 stars can only take you so far (first round of the CFP apparently), at which point, you're going to hit a brick wall. A couple years ago, I analyzed the average stars for each national champion's starting lineup. I should do it over again, but I seem to remember it was just a hair under 4.0. A few less 5-stars than 3-stars. Which is basically the best from 4 top-5 classes.
So no, you don't need STARZ to win the Big Ten, but you do need them to beat Alabama.

I don't understand why he needed a year to "get to know the coaching staff." The other players didn't know the coaching staff either, and they didn't have any problems. I never understand when players say they're "glad to know what's expected of them." What does that even mean? Give 100% effort, that's what's expected of you, and you don't need the coaching staff to tell you that. If you're not the starter, look at what the starter does -- how he practices, how much time he puts in the weight room, etc. Try to work harder and play tougher than him.

|35 weeks 1 day ago||A lot of fantastic photos -- for all the games||
I have a sort-of indirect appreciation for the photos -- my cousin is big into photography, and when her son played football (4th-6th grade) she would take photos of each player for an end-of-the-season DVD that she would hand out to the parents. She did pretty well, but a lot of kids would still be half covered-up by other players and they never had a nice, clean shot.
Football is a difficult sport to photograph. It's a big field, a lot of the players are bunched up, and you really have to be in the right place at the right time. Some of that is luck, but a lot of it is skill and being at the right place on the sideline. That Darboh photo -- just amazing.
Neat to see where Fuller was on that shot -- 0:32.

I got into an argument with a State fan once because he said Dantonio is better than Bo ever was due to more 11-win seasons and top 10 finishes. Then I slowly have to explain to him that they only had 11-game seasons up until the 90s and Bo finished in the top 10 for 10 straight seasons and 16 times total out of 22 seasons. They just think Dantonio is the greatest coach that has ever lived.
|37 weeks 4 days ago||I don't understand Ferentz here at all||
he took the time outs when MSU was still outside the 10, like he was setting up to let them in the endzone. When they got the first down at the 3, after they ran the ball the entire length of the field, I thought for sure he'd let them in. But nope, now it's time to make a last stand right here and MSU bleeds the clock to 27 seconds before scoring on 3rd down. Now you need a miracle to win because you have no time outs.
The other end of a screw up in this situation happened last week with ND, where they had 1st and goal from the 2 and punched it in on 1st down with 30 seconds to go. Stanford has time outs and charges right down the field and kicks the winning FG (with benefit of a 15-yard facemask). Everyone says "you expect your defense to be able to stop them." Well, obviously you shouldn't expect them to get a stop because they didn't. The team on offense has so much more control in that situation.
I would definitely call 30 seconds (with timeouts) the lower limit for reasonablly being able to take a kickoff and score a FG. A lot had to go right for Stanford to win that game. 1 minute is much more reasonable. In Iowa's case, Ferentz took the time outs at a decent time, preserving minutes on the clock, but once they have first and goal at the 3, and certainly when they have 2nd and goal at the 1 with ~1 minute to go, you have to let them in the endzone so you have any real chance to get down the field and kick a FG.
Coaches need a "1 minute rule" and design the time outs around it, but they just don't.
|37 weeks 6 days ago||It was almost the GB game earlier at Lambeau||
That was almost a complete catastrophe that was only bailed out because the GB kicker botched the kick. So let's see the sequence of events in that one
1. Lions score TD to go up 8 with 1:57 to go, but miss XP
2. Packers go down and score TD with 32 seconds to go, miss 2-point
3. Packers recover onside kick after it goes right through Calvin Johnson's hands
4. Packers drive for game-winning FG but their kicker was replaced by me trying to kick a 52-yard FG and the ball barely gets off the ground
That really could have been one of the all-time classics if that guy made the FG, because the clown show factor was so high at the end of that game

No idea how it is on gamedays. Keep in mind, 322 is a two-lane road most of the way from Dubois and hilly as hell. So if you don't mind feeling like you're going to fly off a cliff, you might give it a try. Either way, I would get there way earlier than you expect because traffic is a major concern no matter which way you go.

basically you have a kill a dude to get this penalty a lot of times. There was a direct helmet hit (no question targeting) in the Baylor-Oklahoma game with no call, and Anu Solomon got a concussion the Arizona-Utah game with no call. This is the most subjective call I've seen outside of block/charge in basketball.
|40 weeks 4 days ago||Obvious targeting call||
Not called, of course. I saw a dude get his helmet knocked clean off by a straight crown of the helmet shot in the OU/Baylor game as well; not targeting. I've come to the conclusion that the Big 10 is the only conference calling it.
|41 weeks 1 day ago||Stickers are probably too big||
So there's a few things going on here. If the stickers are the same size as the old ones from way back, there's less real estate along the ears to put them in because the lines of the helmet are farther apart now than they used to be. The stickers never used to be jammed inbetween the lines. Maybe the sticker requirement is too lax with dudes getting 6-8 stickers a game. After the Utah game, I was like, well hell, those helmets are going to fill up fast. They should consider adding a super sticker of a different color/type that is basically a higher denomination than the plain sticker (say 1 super sticker = 5 or 10 regular stickers) to clean things up a bit.
|41 weeks 1 day ago||Glad hospice was positive for you||
I think refusing drugs is a big part of that and it's quite strong of your mom to do such. Hospice was a pretty awful experience in my mom's case. I mean, I don't know how she felt (I'd like to think she didn't feel any pain), but it was either the tumors or the drugs talking because she would talk to her invisible friend Penny (ie, the wall next to her bed) for the final couple weeks. That came a few weeks after answering every question with "zero zero"
How you feel today mom? Zero zero
What day is it? Zero zero
What did you eat today? Zero zero
What the fuck does that even mean?
I visited her every weekend, and every weekend it was like we lost another part of her. For five months. At the end, I'd really had enough, and figured she wouldn't even know if I was there anyway, but my grandma was resolute and still wanted to see her every Sunday. So I kept grandma happy. I would just say hello and walk back to the lobby.
The whole thing, from early chemo, to later chemo, to signing off on hospice, to just waiting for her to die; it's just emotionally and physically draining for everybody involved. I don't envy this poor kid or his parents, because it's really not fair for this to happen to anybody.
|41 weeks 3 days ago||Rutgers band||
My cousins and I saw them on the concourse before the game and figured it was a high school band or something because there were only around a dozen of them. Nope, that was the whole band.
In the 2nd half, it got to the point that I wanted the defense to get a 3rd down stop not for actual game purposes, but only so I wouldn't hear that stupid band play that dumb 1st down song again. We kept making fun of it in the stands and imitating the puny trumpet sound.
I'm also glad U-M didn't play this on the road this year, because Rutgers plays For Whom the Bell Tolls for every single 3rd down on defense and they do this stupid hand thing. Saw it during the MSU game (MSU had a lot of 3rd downs that game) and immediately checked the schedule and had a sigh of relief in seeing that Rutgers was a home game this year. Only the PSU first down cat sound is worse.

I wouldn't publish something where

Maybe these are the "if everybody in the country except TCU/MSU loses 2 games" scenarios, but come on, that doesn't account for a 1-2% discrepency in those probabilities. Plus, show tenths of a percent for crying out loud.

I think the Utah/Oregon result is overblown and sort of like BYU/U-M, where things snowballed and the game got away from them. That said, Oregon has some serious issues at QB. The first knee-jerk reaction about the Oregon/MSU game was that the Oregon offense was not playing at the right tempo with the new QB, but Oregon had 82 plays on offense, which is more than average for them. I went back and watched the playoff game against FSU from last year. No comparison, really. That offense was much more in sync and the plays seemed to flow very well, one after another. It really isn't tempo, per se, but this year's offense doesn't have the same flow without Mariota.
Even then, Vernon Adams missed a wide open dude that would have won the game. MSU really hasn't shown the dominance they need to impress the committee, and I wonder if they're going to wake up and lay the smackdown on Purdue and Rutgers the next couple weeks. We all know they'll be ready on October 17th and that game will be a bloodbath.

Rawk music definitely has slid from the rap end of the spectrum (thank god no more "started from the bottom now we're here") more toward the redneck end of the spectrum. It's OK for now, but if I start hearing fiddles and banjos, I will be upset. CCR is about the limit on the redneck scale for me.

|50 weeks 6 days ago||Disappointing, but flashes of hope||
there are some good plays in there on offense -- especially on those quick outside throws (minus the pick six, obviously). The play where Perry cut blocks the CB was beautiful, it worked great the 2-3 times they threw it out there. That looks like a much more reasonable play than expecting the slot guy to get out there and block the CB to the inside. A few throws where Chesson was able to get 5-6 yards by just taking what the defense gave them. Those plays are the ones that used to drive us nuts under Hoke, where it was just doomed from the start because defenders are right on the line or the blocking was just inept. The WRs + Butt were much more promising than I expected.
As I said in another thread, the running game picked up slightly in the 2nd half, after being horrible in the 1st half. I don't think this will ever be an elite OL that blows open huge holes that make it very obvious where the RB is supposed to go, so I like Smith's tenacity in this situation. Did he miss some holes? Sure. But Smith makes sense based on what you have.
Rudock...what can anybody say that hasn't already been said. He missed a lot of throws and it's disappointing to see our QB play in such a bad state that we just have to accept that because there's nobody better. There is some incredible lack of talent at QB that neither Morris or Speight can do better than that.
Defense played great, I think. If you told me they would give up 17 points for the game, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. There was some sloppy defending and missed tackles out there, but they didn't just flat out blow coverages and give up huge plays. Some promising play by Wormley in the first half and the run defense looks great. Still no pressure on the QB, though, with just one sack.
|50 weeks 6 days ago||I'm not even mad||
Rudock had a terrible game, and I expect (hope for) better the rest of the season. Running game improved in the 2nd half to almost servicable, after being complete hot trash in the first. That failure on the 3rd/4th and 1 sequence just clouds the whole 2nd half run game after they were getting some OK 5-7 yard chunks.
So many what-ifs in this game offensively; I can see how the offense is supposed to run, and it seems much more coherent and organized than last year, but the execution is just not there yet.
