If you are 21 years old or younger this fall, you were 12 years old or younger the last time Michigan won a Big Ten Championship and went to the Rose Bowl.
That's right around the age most kids are introduced to college athletics. In other words, an entire generation of new fans has really never seen Michigan be the Michigan most of us grew up with or remember.
Sucking at football for nearly a decade has cost Michigan dearly.

for instance, the Raiders have been a joke for 20 years, but growing up for me the Raiders were a close second to the Steelers and Cowboys in the 70's early 80's.
I'll go with a 30 year window and my percepetions of some organizations
NHL Best: Red Wings and its not even close
Worst: Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs. Hockey mad towns and can't get their act together to have any kind of sustainable success.
NBA Best: Lakers, Spurs, Celtics, grudgingly put the Bulls in this category.
Worst Atlanta Hawks, other than the Dominque Wilkins years not much.
NFL Best: 49'ers, they were it in the 80's, 90's, Steelers, Patriots close
MLB Best Cardinals and Yankees
Worst San Diego
|6 days 22 min ago||Bo was paid||
well less than $1 million in the early 80's. At one point Texas A&M offered something around $750,000 per year to be their head coach. (1982 or so)
Today's 1982 equivalent of $1,000,000 is around $2,400,000. Just to show how out of whack college coaches compensation has become.
Or put it another way, Urban's 2015 compensation would be $2.5 million in 1982. No one was paid that kind of money to coach college football back then, not even close

Reece Davis is now doing the morning College Game Day, the evening wrap up show is getting a total revamp now that Holtz is gone.
I used to love that show, but years ago they went off the rails and just like Sportscenter devoted more and more of their time to talking. More like taking opposite possitions just to argue on TV about it. It just became unwatchable to me. Holtz himself became a character rather than an analyst and it just wasn't any good to watch for a long time.
Happy he was able to contribute something beyond coaching for so long, but the show had run its course for me a long time ago. Here's hoping they find a new host, a new good analyst and they run more highlights like highlight shows are supposed to do.

One team people forget
No NHL team scored more points than the 2006 Detroit Red Wings with 124. True their division sucked with Columbus, Chicago and St Louis finishing in the last 3 spots in the Conference.
The Wings were 2nd in goals scored and were never shut out during that season.Wings were beaten 4-2 by Edmonton in round 1.
Cup success is everything in the NHL and I understand that, but that Red Wings team was awesome and for me is probably its most disappointing in the last 2 decades as far as Cup performances.

Oline--Michigan won't be Michigan until this is fixed. Format didn't really allow a good cohesive line, so forming an opinion here might be harsh, but they have a long, long way to go.
QB--I hope Ruddock is really good and wins the job.
Defense--pleased overall, too hard to tell if they dominated because the offense struggled, or if they're that good. Hopefully because they're 'that good'.
Overall lack of team speed really sticks out.

I think the Tigers will be pretty good, it really comes down to making it through the year without any key injuries to Verlander, Price or Sanchez and Miggy being healthy. If that happens they're as good as anyone, if not they'll be in a real battle to nab a playoff spot. I'll say those guys stay healty, Price makes at run at Cy Young, Verlander returns to good form and Miggy amazes us all. 94-68, 5 clear of the White Sox.

has always been the young, hot name expected to do great things. Some of it due to being an Izzo disciple. Eventually those people get older and either they've done what others thought, or they just sort of fade off considered a mild disappointment.
In Crean's case I think he'll be the latter. He's a good, not great coach. Kind of a lunatic at times and plays in the ultra competitive Big Ten and while he may be in the hotbed of Indiana the Hoosiers no longer automatically get the best players from that State every year. See MSU's roster, see UM's roster, see OSU recent rosters.
He very well could win a couple Big Ten's down the road and might have a decent tournament run or two. But I think his ceiling is way, way lower than what some expected. Good coach, not great.

|15 weeks 5 days ago||The NFL is fearing||
there is more money available to coaches in college.
Michigan's up'd the ante considerably and the big money donors will have to step up their game at the college level. Expect a tide of money to flow towards college coaches and that tide will draw NFL coaching experience.
Even this morning, Clayton still tried to play off Harbaugh to Michigan in an un-truthful way.
|16 weeks 5 hours ago||tis true||
ESPN was big on hockey when they had the playoffs. Since they don't have the contract they barely cover the sport.
ESPN also used to show highlights without bias or commentary. Now Sportscenter is unwatchable with 15 minutes of highlites, sometimes missing important ones, and 45 minutes talking about or over analying those highlites or some stupid incident that had nothing to do with the outcome.
Its pretty much trash these days.
|16 weeks 5 hours ago||Everyone||
forgets the 86 Iowa(9-3) game, a 20-17 Michigan win in the rain on a last second kick by Bergeron. Hayden Fry's Hawkeyes were always a big challenge back then. The year before Harbaugh drove them inside the 5 for the put-away TD and then Thomas Wilcher fumbled it away and Iowa kicked a last second FG to win the #1 vs #2 battle.
Harbaugh is probalby one of very few QB's who can say they beat Miami and Florida State in their career.

|16 weeks 2 days ago||Expect one hell||
a series of quotes from two of the biggest a holes in college football leading up to the Michigan State game.
|16 weeks 2 days ago||Yes||
the context was wrong.
Gold feels he was misquoted because the whole quote wasn't used and described with the question asked. Gold also felt he was asked a question in a casual conversation off the record. The writer insists he didn't misqoute Gold, but in my opinion has never been genuine about completely using the quote wrong.
Anyway, Ebling sucks at writing still and the other guy still has job writing bad articles still.
|16 weeks 2 days ago||I learned to ignore||
most of Jack's writing back high school.
The pissing match you're thinking of involved another writer who quoted Ian Gold. Debate still rages on whether Gold was quoted properly. He says he didn't say it, the writer to this day says he does. At that time the LSJ published an aritcle based on a quote that Gold says was "off camera" in the hallway and it pissed of Sparty, because everything did back then too. The writer wrote a story using the quote even though he didn't have it on tape. Ultimately it was Ebling who allowed the quote to be published without the quote being on tape which meant they couldn't provide evidence Gold said what he did.
Michigan stood behind Gold and said the writer made it up. etc etc etc.

|16 weeks 5 days ago||I'd be ok||
with Legends jerseys for one game a year. But they shouldn't be permanent. I'd like the new guys to have a chance to make a number famous themselves.
No one at Michigan gave a damn about #21 until Desmond Howard.
|16 weeks 5 days ago||That was||
a man kick
|16 weeks 6 days ago||NBA||
|16 weeks 6 days ago||Can we supplement||
this with "and then Harbaugh realized what an a-hole" Brandon was.
Our scapegoat would be complete then.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||I see we're||
still posting these before lunch. Damn it.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||I'm so glad||
I grew up in an era where media people weren't complete ass-clowns
|17 weeks 9 min ago||This is a last ditch||
effort by the Niners to see if Harbaugh has trade value. One thing is sure Jim's tenure in SF is over one way or the other.
next Tuesday Jim become's a free man and I suspect many owners and GM's are lining up their pay packages right now.
Within 9 days we'll know where we stand with JIm and if we have shot at him.
|17 weeks 2 hours ago||the serious nature||
of this response suggests you have never seen that episode of Family Guy
|17 weeks 7 hours ago||so||
they won't be studying the United States.
|17 weeks 9 hours ago||To quote||
Why aren't we funding this?
|17 weeks 2 days ago||perhaps||
the $49 mill 6 years was leaked to get Michigan to off the "asking" price of 8 mill per year.
whatever the case, Mr. Harbaugh is in an amazing negotiating position right now.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||I hate being||
late for the posbang
|17 weeks 3 days ago||Harbaugh||
grew up in a lot of places, Kentucky, Toledo, Bowling Green, Iowa City, Kalamazoo, Palo Alto, Ann Arbor.
|17 weeks 3 days ago||college football||
is becoming a toy of the rich, I don't like where this is heading.
I'm happy Michigan is after Harbaugh and hopefully we turn a corner but it makes me pretty ill to think that wealthy people can have so much influence on salaries of a college football coach.
I mean come on, 8.1 million to coach football. Ridiculous.
|17 weeks 3 days ago||Just FYI before||
you or others throw out this ridiculous statement
To avg 8 wins per seaon Brady Hoke needed to win just one more game at some point in his 4 years. This would likely have not changed his fate.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||He may be||
a good coach but he is pretty much an assclown.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||the last time||
this rumor came up it didn't end well for Michigan.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||I could see||
certain people at Michigan seeking his advice, but there is no way in hell that man would ever be the coach at Michigan.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||I kind of like||
the sweeping changes. Someone or something or maybe everyone is finally realizing Michigan quit being Michigan and tried to be like everyone else.
|17 weeks 5 days ago||also odd||
Ohio now has Bo Pelini, Terry Bowden, Frank Solich and Tommy Tubberville coaching at schools in that state. None of them OSU.
I didn't realize Ohio was such a nice place to finish out your working years
|17 weeks 5 days ago||Maybe Pelini||
basically fired himself from Nebraska and is just burned out from the hot spotlight of FBS.
|17 weeks 5 days ago||Thank you||
for making the boring parts of this search interesting. Daily now, I guess.
|17 weeks 6 days ago||A bright spot on the year||
Mason performed very well for a true freshmen or any class really.
|18 weeks 7 hours ago||Ross is a billionaire||
you don't get that way by being nice
|18 weeks 10 hours ago||these shows||
make me realize just how much better college football is about keeping their players under wraps and out of the constant spotlight. Its been years since we had teams like Miami or players like Bosworth or Sanders.
Miami was excellent in 2001/02 but I still maintain the Big East was no challenge at all.
|18 weeks 1 day ago||NBA rules or NCAA rules?||
it makes a difference
|18 weeks 2 days ago||The flight||
went on to Puebla, Mexico. Nothing to see here, move along.
flightradar24.com has better graphics, less flight info, but just geeky cool.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Hundley||
has been expected to declare for the draft all year.
|18 weeks 3 days ago||Maybe Wisconsin||
just can't pay enough?
|18 weeks 3 days ago||kids have been||
playing with Michigan for a long time. Not sure I'd ever believe these guys were really "committed" to Michigan.
|18 weeks 3 days ago||Colorado||
is a barren recruiting hell hole. They were awful before McCartney and have been slowly plunging back to those depths.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||count me||
in the Miles Minority.
Unless Miles brings with him a legitimate successor who can't fail, 5-7 years of maybe ok to good football, with all the things Brian mentioned followed by our 4th head coaching search in 15 years is not worth it.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||They look like||
they thought their season ended after beating Syracuse.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||dropped a punt||
and fumbled inside their 20 against Oregon and the week before against ASU. Nothing new
|18 weeks 4 days ago||2-star||
with offers from
Boise St, Cal-Poly, Cal, Nevade, Sacramento St., San Diego St.
|18 weeks 5 days ago||Mariota was||
also banged up in the middle of the year.
All 3 are very worthy of their New York invite.
|18 weeks 5 days ago||$7.5 million||
per year to coach college football, more than Saban, is in fact earth shattering.
|18 weeks 5 days ago||c'mon man||
I mean, c'mon
