I wonder how much ad revenue this site is losing because the app is a hot pile of steaming excrement and won't load. Had to log into the site just to post. I miss the HD app so much. Is the ad revenue really worth less site traffic?
What a turnaround this team has undergone. Great win!

Corley and Scott would probably need to murder an enginerd and copulate with its corpse before Mork would kick them off the team. Subtract those two from a 3-9 team, and things get real ugly in 2017.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Changes||
Not that anyone here would put any stock in what he says, but Valenti hasn't been pleased with D'Antonini's loyalty to his assistants and refusal to make changes after going 3-9. He cites the fact that no other program has approached MSU with interest in interviewing their assistants (specially Barnett and Bollman); contrast that with Fisch and Wheatley leaving, Drevno being considered for the WMU HC position, Durkin leaving to be Maryland HC, etc.
Aside: I don't know if he's more tolerable due to State's lack of success over the last year (football and basketball) -- or just getting older, now 10+ years since The Rant -- but I gave him a chance over the last few months and find him to be not as bad as I once thought/heard. I also prefer Reger to Foster, but that's just me.
|3 weeks 20 hours ago||By "last game for the Maize and Blue"||
...I assume you mean the 2000 Orange Bowl?
The game in which he was 34-46 for 369 and four TDs, and led his team on a comeback from 14 points down in the third quarter to take the game into OT and win it?
(But point taken. I don't think many saw this coming when he was drafted in the 6th round.)
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Moving stage||
I disagree. There was plenty of room in the upper bowl for those of us without Art Van seating credentials. For that reason alone, I came away thinking the event could move back to Hill. And I agree with others that Hill would be a classier venue, like Radio City for the draft. Personally, I felt the acoustics weren't great.
EDIT: One source says there were 6,000 in attendance at Crisler. Capacity is 13,000, they were using less than half the seating, and the upper seating was only half full, so I don't believe that number. Nevertheless, Hill seats 3,500, so it would need to stay at Crisler if that number is indeed accurate.

|16 weeks 6 days ago||It's not that hard||
Consider, just being a season ticket holder:
Neglect being a graduate (20 points) or letterwinner and any other donations to the University.
If one had only two (decent) football, basketball, and hockey seats since 1992, an estimate of points gained since that time would be roughly:
If you move those football seats into the new box seats, the annual PSD increases to $1,550 per seat (or more). Similar for basketball (and hockey).
Most of the blue-hairs have been around (at least) that long and can afford that kind of annual outlay.

Celebrities around the program (Jordan, Brady), whether he got any individual time to interact with them (no, too many players)
Playing for "crazy man" Don Brown (I zoned out on this response; audio was really bad/muffled, like not talking directly into the mouthpiece)

You can be disgusted by what happened at PSU under JoePa's reign, you can be disgusted by the cover-up and rationalization/apologism, you can be disgusted by the PSU institution and most of the fanbase for continuing to portray JoePa as some sort of hero, completely disregarding his role in ruining young victims' lives. We're ALL disgusted by these things, trust me.
But to say this to a specific PSU fan, who is simply adding to discourse on an unrelated topic, is unjustified:
If I recall, NittanyFan has previously and repeatedly stated his position on JoePa, that he doesn't hold JoePa in the same esteem as many other delusional PSU fans. While a large portion of the fanbase is in denial and tone-deaf, NittanyFan doesn't appear to be one of them.
You simply can't hold one person (a fan, at that) accountable for the actions and attitudes of an entire fanbase, much less JoePa, Sandusky, and the PSU administration. That's crazy.
I, for one, find NittanyFan's contributions to be reasonable.

This raises an interesting question. Much attention was given to his macho refusal to wear a coat, and even long sleeves on otherwise cold days. I'm cold just sitting at my desk today, and it interferes with my concentration. I can't imagine what it would be like to focus on coaching an entire football team when you're wearing short sleeves in 30-degree weather. The players...that's different. They're running around and competing (about half of them, anyway), and staying active on the sidelines doing things other than clapping.
I dunno. I can't help but feel like the whole macho "manball I don't need no stinkin' coat or long sleeves" thing was just for show and potentially distracted from what was really important...managing a Power 5 football team and coaching staff on game day.
But whatever. Water under the bridge. Good luck to him at UO.

|33 weeks 5 days ago||You can't have one||
...without the other
|34 weeks 4 days ago||Opportunity||
Other than the annual tryout? We don't. The only two criteria for playing travel are you make the team (i.e., have enough talent to be one of the 11/12 best players at the tryout) and you finance your way. Perhaps your question is aimed at the financial end, following the discussion above about opportunity for all socioeconomic groups. Travel teams come from all over, not just the affluent suburbs. If a family doesn't have the money, then they can fundraise. In fact, most teams conduct organized fundraising to offset team costs (winter practice, uniforms, equipment, field use, umpires, insurance, tournaments, etc.). Examples include can/bottle drives, restaurant nights, bowling nights, golf outings, euchre tournies, working a charity poker room (like the one that closed at the Heidelberg), you name it. Another option is to secure sponsors, which is surprisingly easy; many community businesses are willing to chip in $100-500.
In my four years of coaching (travel and rec), it's been apparent that 1) there are rec players playing travel who shouldn't be, and 2) the development of travel-quality players in rec ball is likely stunted due to playing with less talented players who are just learning the game. In my first game coaching rec (8-10 year-olds), there were 42 walks issued by the two teams, in six innings. That benefits no one, least of all the kids who have talent/interest and want to play and improve. The kids who are learning and just happy to be there (or not...) don't really care. So in summary, every player may have the same opportunity, but not overy player should take it.
|34 weeks 4 days ago||Differences||
There are some major differences between LL and travel that put LL at a disadvantage (or make it less attractive).
As a travel coach (9U-11U), I don't like the stealing. It means a kid on first will be on third within two pitches. Every player steals, no matter the circumstances. For a baseball purist, or someone who grew up in a previous era, that's a put-off. However, by 11U (and more likely 12U), the catchers are developing and beginning to throw out runners, so they don't steal as often.
Nevertheless, stealing is a part of the game. To make a player stay on the base until the ball crosses the plate is somewhat unnatural, and opens the possibility of players leaving early, etc. It also delays the development of pitchers, who need to learn to hold runners and avoid balks.
In 12U LL, the base distance is 60 feet. In 11/12U travel, it's 70 feet. In 9/10U travel, it's 65 feet (which about makes it about even with LL, if you're taking a 5-foot lead).
In 12U LL, the pitching distance is 46 feet, which is the same as 9/10U travel. In 11/12U travel, the distance moves to 50 feet. This makes sense, as the boys are growing, getting stonger, and throwing harder. To have these LL "phenoms" (like Chris Drury, Danny Almonte, or Mo'ne Davis) pitching "70 mph" from 46 feet is ridiculous.
In 12U LL, the minimum outfield fence distance is 200 feet; this was the distance of Lamade Stadium in Williamsport through 2006, at which time the fence was extended to 225 feet because home runs were becoming too common (Wikipedia); if you've ever watched the LLWS, about every other hit is a HR, which just isn't realistic. Travel fields aren't as regulated, but our 11U field is 200 feet (and is one of the smallest we've played on this year), and kids are hitting balls off the fence with regularity. I can't imagine how many HRs we'd see playing in the same bandbox at 12U.
LL/rec ball serves a purpose, as does travel.

While it may not impact viewership or youth play, I've heard from at least one minor league player that ethnic separation is very real in the minor leagues (especially lower levels). Latin players stick together and don't associate much with white/black players. I'm sure the language barrier has a part in this, but it may not be the only factor.
That's an odd concept to me, being on a team where you don't associate with your teammates.
|34 weeks 4 days ago||As a coach and parent||
I would say the same thing: I want my players (and kids) to play other sports, because it makes them more athletic, makes the better in all the sports they play, and reduces the likelihood of injury.
However, that doesn't mean I want them to play all of their sports in the same season of the year.

Michigan didn't tell Spike he couldn't leave. He announced he was leaving (having graduated), and Michigan said he couldn't transfer to a B1G school.
I get your point, that restricting a player's options (be it release from LOI or restricting transfer destination) isn't in the player's best interest. But these are also two very different situations.
EDIT: Sorry, beaten by a few seconds.

I am in no way defending PSU, Paterno, Sandusky, or anyone else associated with that school. It should be kicked out of the B1G immediately. It's sickening, and continues to get worse. I knew when the NCAA withdrew the punishments that they would use it as justification that nothing was done wrong.
However, I don't read the article as saying PSU was paying out to victims in 1971. I read it as, PSU has paid out (no time frame provided) to victims who were victimized dating back to 1971. The former would be much, much worse. As it is, the school is simply acknowledging that they've settled with and paid out to victims dating back to 1971, and it's highly (understatement) unlikely that Paterno and someone in the administration didn't know about the claims.
Having said that, burn it down.

I'm late to this party, but it feels like an opportunity to commisserate after 20 years, so better late than never. I even had to check my transcript, because I couldn't remember the course that was so bad I had to withdraw. Memory is getting bad, too. But maybe that's a good thing, for these courses.
ME210 (Solid Mechanics) - frustratingly bad
PHYS401 (Intermediate Mechanics) - should've withdrawn after the first exam; A- for a score of 21/100 made me think I should stick it out. Bad decision. Pretty sure I still have recurring nightmares about not being able to answer even one question on the exam after the first pass.
PHYS406 (Statistical and Thermal Physics) - only W on the transcript; completely lost.

Technically, "woop woop" is not a Yost original. It dates back to Larry Murphy and his time with the Caps. He had a reputation for (whoops) making bonehead plays, which compelled the impatient Caps fans to make the catcall when he touched the puck after leaving the Caps. Its adoption at Yost may have been organic, but it wasn't original. In fact, only a fraction of the cheers at Yost are original to Yost.
