I am in no way defending PSU, Paterno, Sandusky, or anyone else associated with that school. It should be kicked out of the B1G immediately. It's sickening, and continues to get worse. I knew when the NCAA withdrew the punishments that they would use it as justification that nothing was done wrong.
However, I don't read the article as saying PSU was paying out to victims in 1971. I read it as, PSU has paid out (no time frame provided) to victims who were victimized dating back to 1971. The former would be much, much worse. As it is, the school is simply acknowledging that they've settled with and paid out to victims dating back to 1971, and it's highly (understatement) unlikely that Paterno and someone in the administration didn't know about the claims.
Having said that, burn it down.

ME210 (Solid Mechanics) - frustratingly bad
PHYS401 (Intermediate Mechanics) - should've withdrawn after the first exam; A- for a score of 21/100 made me think I should stick it out. Bad decision. Pretty sure I still have recurring nightmares about not being able to answer even one question on the exam after the first pass.
PHYS406 (Statistical and Thermal Physics) - only W on the transcript; completely lost.

Its adoption at Yost may have been organic, but it wasn't original. In fact, only a fraction of the cheers at Yost are original to Yost.

Of course it's a team game; nobody's arguing that. But the QB is critical to the team's success, and was especially so for this team. We played without our star safety/nickel for the bowl game and still only gave up 7 points. Do you really think we'd have gone 10-3 with the inexperienced QBs on our roster? He was a godsend.
|17 weeks 6 days ago||He's right||
But communication (and social media, and the 24-hour news cycle...) is just a part of it. There are parallels between what's happening here (with recruiting) and what happened at the end of the Carr era. The game, in some respects, passed him by, and he refused to adapt, because that wasn't the Michigan Way. The game, in some respects, passed U-M by. This is one of the reasons Martin went after RichRod, thinking we'd modernize our program a bit.
Fast forward, the game (or more specifically, recruiting) has changed and U-M was once again in danger of being passed by. Hoke, being the good and honest person that he is, filled his classes early and stood pat with those recruits. Unfortunately, nice guys don't always win football games (although he seemed to have no problem recruiting talent).
I see it as being similar to the marketing triangle:
Except it's more like a line spectrum. You can have squeaky clean and do it "the right way" (e.g., Northwestern), or you can have wins at any cost (Bama or Kentucky ball). Most fans would probably prefer to have both (win often, the right way), which isn't impossible but is much more difficult in 2016 that it was in 1985. Our fan base wasn't happy with "the right way" and 5-7, so we brought in a coach who operates more in the middle of the spectrum than we're accustomed to.
Growing pains. Better communication and organization should prevent recurrence.

At this least that part is true. He let Dave Brandon play on scholarship for four years!
|18 weeks 5 days ago||But||
His acceptance wasn't pulled right before school starts, or even before fall camp starts. It was pulled two weeks before NSD. The difference is tangible, to say the least.
Also, NSD is simply the first day a recruit can sign his LOI. Many recruits wait until after NSD to commit, and that's perfectly acceptable. Many teams still have spots after NSD, so it's not like he doesn't have options. I believe he picked up several interested schools as soon as he reopened his recruitment.
I see nothing wrong with competition, although I'll admit applying it to verbal commitments is an adjustment from prior years. As others have noted, nothing is final until the LOI is signed, and that applies to both parties.

|20 weeks 1 day ago||Timestamps||
It's been my experience that timestamps on web content are not always accurate or indicative of when the content was originally posted. On ESPN, for example, an older article can be updated, and the timestamp will be updated accordingly. So it can be misleading, and has led MGoPeople to post articles they thought were new, but really weren't (sometimes weeks old).
In this case, I expect the blog is at fault, not Drew Sharp.
Now that I've apparently defended Drew Sharp, I think I'll go shower again.

Just speculation: this might be why we're hearing that some commits haven't heard from the staff in a while, and some commits are looking elsewhere. Perhaps a mutual, unspoken parting of ways, as the staff senses an opportunity to upgrade the quality of the class with late-committing blue-chippers.
But again, that's pure speculation.
Recruiting is fascinating.

Like some of the other comments, I was a bit underwhelmed, considering the hype train for this movie. Felt a bit predictable at many points, and even improbable at times (the MF "flying" on the ground, for one). But it was light years ahead of the prequel, for sure. And the acting and dialogue were so much better. Hayden Christiansen and Jake Lloyd were terrible, and Natalie Portman left something to be desired, as well.
All around, an improvement. But not a home run in my book. And I consider myself a big JJ Abrams fan. In spite of his love for lens flares.

Based on the current number of QBs on the roster (with more on the way), I would say Coach Harbaugh agrees. Players who come to Michigan know they'll be competing.
I agree with other commenters. If we bring in a 5th year grad transfer and none of our existing rostered QBs can beat him out (or more correctly, the coaches think he provides the best chance to win games), then I don't really feel bad about it. Unwavering loyalty to rostered players who aren't the most talented or most prepared is a questionable recipe for success.
Plus, successful grad transfers seem to be fairly uncommon, and certainly that's been true for U-M (as I believe Rudock is our first, or at least our first who made an impact). I say this without performing any research. For every Russell Wilson, Everett Golson, Mean Girls Rudddock, and Blake Countess, there are probably just as many transfers who make limited or minimal contribution.
Who are we to turn down a capable, experienced, talented, preferably calm QB? In spite of his limitations, I shudder to imagine where we might be this year without Rudock.

|35 weeks 4 days ago||Hm||
So we should condone these behaviors, because they're young men and young men do stupid things?
Should sexual assault be included in the list of stupid things that young men do, that society should accept?
From a study cited on CNN in 2013 (LINK):
For the record, I'm not suggesting SAE was shut down for something related to sexual assault. I don't know the circumstances, nor do I care. I just take issue with the "boys will do stupid things and we should accept it" response. If you rush a frat and willingly allow yourself to kicked in the balls for initiation, you probably deserve what you get. But there are no exceptions for personal responsibility and basic human decency. You even acknowledge that today's kids are likely smarter and more aware of social consequences. But that doesn't seem to faze some kids, especially in some notable fraternities (as it would seem).
I think kids today ARE different than they used to be, for countless reasons. Especially rich kids on a college campus.

|35 weeks 5 days ago||It's not revisionist||
His handling of "the process" at the time was embarrassing. Whether he intended to hire Miles or not, he made himself unavailable when Miles tried to contact him.
Things got leaked into the media, which then blew up any chance of hiring Miles, which led to LSU's AD basically thumbing his nose at U-M and bragging that not even Miles' alma mater is good enough to lure him away. Whether Martin had intention or not, it made U-M look bad, and very publicly.
Offering the job to Schiano (of all people), seemingly on a whim (did anyone see that coming?), and then having Schiano very publicly turn him down...another hit to the mighty Michigan program.
So we ended up with, at best, our second choice. Were we happy about it? I imagine most of were, and that wasn't the point of my post. Many would argue (and have) there were at least two better candidates ahead of RichRod (Harbaugh and Miles), so in that sense, we got our 3rd or 4th choice. RichRod fell into Martin's lap only because of his very recent falling-out at WVU and the consternation over losing to Pitt.
I didn't read Three And Out, so I'm going on my own read of events from the press, but I'm not revising history. The entire "process" was embarrassing to the University, in my opinion. It made the U-M coaching job look undesirable. The fact that we ended up with a "hot" coach at the time doesn't change that.
I'm sure I could find more to prove I'm not revising history, but do I need to?

Martin didn't like being told he couldn't go somewhere in the stadium, or not being immediately recognized as the AD by every usher:
But on the whole, I gained more appreciation for Martin after reading this book. I was reminded that he did more than just bungle the RichRod hire.
And I would've done the same thing. "Fuck [Brandon] and his passes."

I never knew San Fran was in the AFC.

Because we could've had him in 2011, if we'd had an AD who was competent and only had a large but manageable ego.
|35 weeks 6 days ago||Sears Trophy||
We, as a University and fan base, probably don't care about it. I don't lose sleep or find myself in a bad mood because tennis finished 9th in the B1G. And no fan of another school has ever made fun of me or my school due to the track team's poor finish.
But I could see how the AD would use it a potential metric of overall program performance.
Unfortunately, as you suggest, his fixation on it was a problem. More importantly, the implementation of his fixation; shitcanning good coaches and thinking it will improve performance was a problem.
Fact is, we're never going to be Stanford, and hoping to compete with schools like that (for the Sears Trophy) on a consistent basis is somewhat of a fool's errand.
|35 weeks 6 days ago||So many to choose from||
I'm about 3/4 through the book. Like Nasternak, football season has cut into my reading time. Also, if I wanted to read, I'd go to school. This is quite seriously the first non-picture book I've read in 10+ years. But required reading, no doubt.
I just got past the chapter about DeBord sitting in with non-revenue sports and canning the tennis coach (Berque) because he hadn't won a B1G championship in something like 9 years. And then pushing him on a press release while he was considering the severance package, so the AD could avoid any social media storm. It was sickening. I feel bad for so many people in this book, who stayed out of loyalty, passing up other opportunities, only to get shit on by Brandon.
I lost a lot of respect for DeBord, too. How long has be been around? Wouldn't we expect him to know better, to fight for the "old" way? To quote Ocean's Thirteen, you shook Canham's hand; you should know better. He converted to a yes-man lackey for his own benefit. What a fucking sellout.
M-Hacks. Already discussed above, but fleecing the fans AND academic units to pad your financial bottom line? Unbelievable.
I truly hope Hackett has read this and formulated a plan to right a lot of Brandon's wrongs. Opening the stadium back up to the public would be a great start.

I've been a DirecTV customer off and on for 10+ years; my parents have Comcast and a friend has U-Verse (and I was formerly a U-Verse customer, as well as a Dish customer at one time). I much prefer the DirecTV user interface.
As for weather, I only lose signal in heavy downpours, which would need to actually coincide with my TV-watching. It's maybe once a quarter, and only temporarily. An overblown worry, in my opinion. If I'm watching a Triple D marathon and my signal goes out due to heavy rain, I can usually find something else to do for a few minutes.
The only annoying thing about DirecTV is the occasional soliciting phone calls, where they call repeatedly and don't leave messages. But when I finally answer to chew them out, they usually offer me a good deal on premium channels.
There was a time when DirecTV was the only way to see U-M games outside the region (via the GamePlan package). No other provider had it. But that's no longer a concern with the ABC/ESPN/BTN coverage arrangement.

|1 year 11 weeks ago||Where||
Where, in any of my posts on this topic (much less, the one you're responding to), did I blame StubHub?
|1 year 11 weeks ago||Again||
I actually never said I had no intention of succumbing to a scalper's ransom. I understood that buying a ticket to the NC game against BC was going to cost more than face value. But maybe there were financial constraints in my life at that time, as a struggling graduate? Maybe I was hopeful of finding a reasonably overpriced ticket? Everyone has their reasons for the decisions they make, and I don't regret it.
Again, I'm not necessarily arguing that an individual shouldn't be allowed to request a price that reflects supply and demand, although I admit it's a slippery slope. I guess I'm arguing about making a profession of fleecing people (as a company or individual), and making it more difficult for fans to attend (at the price that was established by the venue).
You, as a fan, may choose to sell your ND ticket for a markup. Okay. But as a fan, did you buy your season tickets solely to make money by reselling them? Probably not.
|1 year 11 weeks ago||What?||
Where in there did I say every non-direct sale is dishonest? I can understand stating your opinion/disagreement with the OP (and justifying your resale of your tickets), but don't do it by twisting my words.

|1 year 11 weeks ago||Documented cost||
That was my own term. Intended to include face value, taxes, and fees, as suggested in the article:
Granted, her situation was different, because she paid $40 (plus fees) for a ticket that faced $27 (plus fees). She should at least be able to sell them for what they truly cost, or even what she paid.
|1 year 11 weeks ago||Actually, I'm not||
I never suggested collusion. In fact, I admitted I don't know why brokers have more access to tickets, and I suggested some possible reasons.
(In fairness, it was maracle who suggested the existence of an agreement between the venue and brokers. I have no idea if this is true or not.)
I would, in fact, be somewhat satisfied if the law applied only to brokers (i.e., businesses who make money solely on the markup of tickets sold by the venue/promoter, inhibiting the financial accessibility of fans to an event).
|1 year 11 weeks ago||The difference is||
If you, the company, buy a widget from a supplier and mark it up, the consumer can go to another retailer for the product. That's how the market corrects over-priced goods and services. I'm not going to buy it at $100 from you if I can get the same thing for $50 from someone else.
Tickets, on the other hand, don't work that way. There's only one true "seller," that being Ticketmaster, Live Nation, or equivalent (U-M), or the venue. Any other market is inherently secondary.
Furthermore, there's a fixed number of tickets to an event, and the event is a one-time occurrence. It's not like being priced out of a new PS3 (by a "reseller"), and choosing to wait to get one later, after more are produced, possibly from a different retailer, and likely at a more reasonable price.
|1 year 11 weeks ago||What is "legal scalping"?||
The very definition of scalping is selling a ticket to an event at a higher price than the official one.
I have absolutely no problem with someone reselling a ticket they can't use; certainly not up to the documented cost of the ticket (including any associated taxes and fees). This is exactly what they do at Camden Yards in Baltimore, where buyers and sellers can get together within the confines of the stadium and negotiate a price, up to the full price of the ticket.
I could also justify an individual asking for what they paid, even if it exceeds the full price of the ticket. To be honest, I could even justify an individual asking for a higher price, based on supply and demand for the event. What I really don't like is a company (or individual) making money solely on the premise of marking up tickets, and making it harder for fans to attend the event. That's dishonest to me.
|1 year 11 weeks ago||You're describing the primary basis for my argument||
For whatever reason (means, contract, opportunity, etc.), brokers have more access or ability to get tickets, faster than the general public and in greater quantity. Maybe it's because they employ X number of employees who sit on Ticketmaster at 10 AM and all purchase the maximum allotment of tickets to an event, and because they have the financial means to buy hundreds of tickets in that manner (whereas I do not). I have no idea. Nevertheless, they end up with a large number of tickets, which they turn around and markup for immediate profit. I'm surprised so many people have no problem with this (as consumers), but that's why I asked for opinions, to calibrate my own.
Having said that, rather than "if it is not illegal for them why should it be for me," I would say "if it is illegal for me and in the best interest of the consumer to pay what they venue/artist/team is asking, why should they be allowed to do it?"

My recollection is, the opposing parents were behind the bench from 91-96, as well.
I also believe that's about when the Ugly Parents chant began. Then again, Yost didn't really have much organized fan participation (outside of end of the period and genesis of C-Ya) until the Cornell playoff series in '91.

(No sarcasm. It was cool.)
I can't help but feel a little disappointed that our last two coaches have ended up in this role -- providing "color" commentary for recruiting and college football happenings for CBS Sports. I mean, I can understand the reason why. A coach needs to be available to fill this role (i.e., fired or retired, or both, like Mack Brown). It's just, our last two coaches have filled it, right after being fired. I wish it were somebody's else's fired coaches filling this role.
EDIT: UMxWolverines stated so simply what I was trying express, with his imbed below. Groundhog's Day, indeed.

I've scoured the internet. I previously went through this exercise to find a high-res image of the helmet. I contacted the AD (no help, as usual), M Den, Riddell, everyone I could think of. I came up with one, but it wasn't ideal for my use.

Was the old SAM house at the corner of Hill and State, where Weill Hall currently sits? The house history page is currently offline. If so, knowing the property-hoarding ways of the University, it wouldn't surprise me if there was pressure on the national organization to just let it go. Of course, not helping the chapter find a new house elsewhere, that's a different story. But really, how many properties near campus would be suitable for that use and available?
