If I were only doing 2-3 days in the Pictured Rocks, I'd take two cars and leave one in Munising and then put in somewhere around Beaver Lake. That might be aggresive for 3 days, depending on your experience level. Instead of Munising, you could leave your 2nd car in the Chapel Falls area. That middle chunk was my favorite part of the trip.

Latest buzz from various A&M media that I trust:
-Muschamp is the dream candidate, but it's unclear whether or not he'd be interested in A&M. He may hold out and see if a DC position opens at Alabama/Auburn/LSU. A lower tier head coaching gig may also be an option.
-Venables at Clemson has deep ties to Sumlin (through OU), but Clemson pays their assistants extremely well so it may not be possible to outbid them.
-Last time around, A&M made a big offer to Narduzzi, but MSU matched and he stayed put. It sounds like they'll revisit that to see what he's thinking these days, but nobody really expects him to accept an A&M offer.
I would be a little bit surprised if they get any of those three and the second tier of candidates hasn't really emerged yet. It's a good job, but not an elite job. A&M has recruited fairly well on defense the last couple of years so there is some talent to work with (e.g. Myles Garrett). They've also had a tendency to recruit talented headcases (e.g. Dorian Claiborne and friends) so there is a lack of upperclassmen after numerous guys were booted for various shenanigans last year.

The bigger issue here, in my opinion, is why, in 2005, Maurice Taylor was in contact with current student athletes. What is it exactly that all those AD employees do? He seems like a fairly obvious person to warn athletes to not trust/have contact with/etc. It seems like the AD should be providing some guidance to revenue sports athletes on this, especially (especially!) those that have already been drafted and have million dollar contracts on the table.

|1 year 43 weeks ago||What follows is conjecture.||
What follows is conjecture. Neg as you will.
I think that many of you are overthinking the cover-up angle and the amount of time that passed between incident and expulsion. Per the police report that was leaked this fall, an accusation was made and investigated. For whatever reason, the fellow student elected not to pursue the matter further. The police allowed the case to close without further action. To my knowledge, there was no OSCR action at this time. This makes sense as, per the article that Don linked above, prior to 2011 the OSCR process was complainant driven. If the woman was unwilling to pursue a criminal charge then I strongly suspect that she was unwilling to pursue an OSCR complaint.
The story gets renewed attention this fall when the police report is leaked. I suspect that someone within the University (OSCR, AD, administration) in an attempt to avoid a scandal, asks what action was taken in 2009 (and perhaps why no OSCR action was taken). Discovering that the process has now changed and having some reason to suspect that Gibbons may have assaulted another student, the case is sent to OSCR for adjudication. This process takes most of the semester and Gibbons is expelled in December.
This, of course, doesn't excuse Hoke from answering some hard questions about his comments regarding Gibbons (injury/familty matters). But, lacking further evidence, pardon me if I don't jump the conclusion that Michigan was engaged in a 4 year coverup/obfuscation/nefariousness.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||Read the article that Don||
Read the article that Don linked. The whole point is that after 2011, the accuser no longer had to file a complaint with OSCR. If any University employees are aware (except a few special departments like CAPS) they are required to report and initiate the OSCR process.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||I think that it's more likely||
I think that it's more likely that when the story resurfaced earlier this year, somebody within the OSCR or the AD asked some questions about why the case wasn't adjucated in 2009. Discovering a change in policy, they may have read the title IX rules carefully and decided that the OSCR process was warranted per the current regulations. In fact, as Gibbons was still a student, it was probably required.

I think that with the way the roster is shaking out, they almost have to break camp with 14/7/2. Emmerton and Tootoo would be the obvious guys to try and send down, but neither clears enough cap space to sign Nyquist. (Tootoo probably clears enough to sign Andersson).
Ergo, I don't think the Wings are done moving pieces around. Quincey is another name that I've seen thrown around. Quincey and a couple of forward prospects might get Detroit one of the young Jets defensemen (Enstrom/Bogosian) that they've been linked to in the past. They were rumored to be sniffing around Edler at the draft, and the Canucks are a mess.

Wings have ~$2.3MM to sign Nyquist, Smith and Andersson. I'm no capologist, but if Samuelsson ($3MM) or Helm (~$2.1MM) goes on LTIR, I think that clears up some money. Also, they can go over by 10% but need to get under the limit before the season.
Right now (assuming Helm is healthy and Samuelsson is not) it looks something like:
Emmerton strikes me as replaceable, but I can't really see anyone wanting to trade for Tootoo. I don't think Detroit would trade Bertuzzi for some reason (not that there's a market there).
I *could* see Detroit trying to package Smith and Nyquist or Tatar for a top-4 defenseman, assuming hypothetical d-man had a small (<$4.5MM) cap hit.

Honestly, you just blew my mind. For some reason (probably all those years he spent in Florida) I thought Bouwmeester was 32 or 33, not younger than I am. I like Bouwmeester, but only because I think the Calgary cap situation means that the will come at a smaller price than Yandle or Enstrom.
The Wings lack a glut of NHL-ready talent. They have Smith and Nyquist (who they likely won't trade, as they are counting on these guys to step up this year) and maybe Mursak and Tatar (who may not be scorers in the NHL, hard to say).
They do, however, have some talent that is 2-3 years away. I think if they trade with Winnepeg, that is the group that comes into play. Guys like Sproul and Tvrdon and maybe Jurco. I'm assuming that they won't trade Jarnkrok, just because his ceiling is much higher than his current value.
Columbus seems to want NHL-ready prospects, but would Calgary or Phoenix jump at guys on the second list? It's hard to say because right now, virtually all the teams in the NHL see themselves as able to make the playoffs. I also think a lot of teams are deluding themselves into thinking that if NJ and LA can make the finals, anyone can.
|3 years 20 weeks ago||Yeah, brain fart. I meant||
Yeah, brain fart. I meant Stuart, not Suter. I imagine any team trading for Weber during the upcoming season will do so having checked that he is receptive to a long term deal.
|3 years 20 weeks ago||Am I the only one that thinks||
Am I the only one that thinks Weber won't go to free agency next year? If he signs a one-year deal with Nashville, I can't imagine that they won't trade him next year, especially after the sting of losing Suter for nothing. And, if they trade him, it won't be to Detroit.
The past few years, Detroit has had a fairly hierarchal model for their defense, where Lidstrom and his partner (especially when it was Rafalski) were the first pairing, Kronwall and Suter were the second pairing, and whoever was left over made the third pairing. I think it's time to move to more of a Vancouver model, where you have a bunch of guys that you are comfortable playing for 22+ minutes a night. (By my count, they have 5 of those guys, but, with the exception of Edler, they're all getting paid about the same: ~$4MM AAV.)
So, right now, the Wings have 1 guy that is for sure in the category: Kronwall. Smith might be ready to eat those sort of minutes. Quincey is a possibility, depending on how you feel about him. I think he'll settle in and have a good year. Either way, best case scenario, Detroit still needs at least 1, and maybe 2 or 3 guys that you would call a top-4 defenseman. That's very concerning.
|3 years 20 weeks ago||I've resigned myself to the||
I've resigned myself to the idea of Dempsey leaving Craven Cottage this summer, but I still think it's more likely that he heads to the continent than to another EPL team. And I really can't see Fulham selling their best player to Chelsea. That would be a complete gut punch for the fans.
At this point though, if he moves to another English side, I can't see it being anyone except Arsenal. They have the Champions League spot, and the need for another attacking player. Plus, Dempsey is well settled in London, so it wouldn't be as major of a move as Italy or France or Germany.
And what's with the knock on Fulham? They are a solid third tier team in the EPL, which means they'll keep contending for spots 7-10. Did you miss the part where Dempsey popped a BEAUTIFUL goal against Juventus and Fulham made a Europa League final? One that they lost in extra time to Diego Forlan and Athletico Madrid?

We will also draft MSU commits, but we will sign them with promises of all the Natty Light they can drink. The rest of the roster will be made of old-time (read: Hanson Bros.) style hockey players. Part of the goal here is to have the top draft pick every year.

Yes and no. I was surprised at the 490 number, which seems huge, but is technically correct.
My problem with this is that it counts every NHLer that has played at least 1 game in the ECHL. That's a little bit misleading. It's hard to find anyone on that list that had major NHL careers that played more than a handful of ECHL games. (Marty Biron, 2 games; Ruslan Fedotenko, 8 games; Dan Girardi, 7 games; Jaroslav Halak, 20 games; Johan Hedburg, 2 games, etc.) And I'm not cherry picking data here, just going down the list and looking up names that I recognize as having been above-average NHLers at some point.

Agree on Nash, Weber and Doan. I don't get the Nash love. You trade away 3 or 4 valuable pieces for the honor of paying one of highest salaries in the NHL and get production that is suspiciously similar to Jiri Hudler.
If Suter were to sign before Weber, I could see Nashville moving Weber's rights. It all depends on where the salary cap ends up after the new CBA gets hammered out. Nashville has $7MM tied up in Rinne and may not be able to afford all three. In this scenario, though, there are likely to be numerious bidders and I can't see Detroit overpaying to the point that Nashville would keep Weber in the division.

A couple of thoughts:
-I thoroughly enjoyed the Futurama question on the Michigan exam. Kudos to the test-writer.
-After a quick glance, it looks like the two tests cover most of the same material. The difference is that the Michigan exam poses the question in a way that a student has to set up the problem before they can do any calculus. While this is a signficant complication, I highly doubt any of those questions are a form that that students haven't previously seen on a homework project. In other words, a well prepared student would take slightly longer to complete the Michigan exam, but not find it too much more difficult.

The Tannehill comparison is useful and interesting. A&M liked to line Tannehill up in the slot and use him as an inside receiver in the Missouri sense. That is, almost like a TE, but without blocking responsibilities and lined up a little bit wider.
Tannehill's best skill was finding gaps and seams in the zone, which makes sense since he was approaching the position as a QB. If Gardner is used similarly, that's really exciting, given the lack of receiving TEs on this team.

Detroit's been hinting for a while that they needed another d-man, and this is going to go a long way towards solidifying that 5-6 pairing. Still, this sets Detroit up for a very interesting set of offseason decisions. 4 guys are more-or-less locks for next year:
So they will need to add or retain 3 guys out of a group that will include Stuart and Lidstrom (depending on what they decide to do) plus Quincey and Brendan Smith, plus any big name free agents on the market (Ryan Suter?).
That sure looks to me like Stuart made his intentions to head west after the season known. It should also be noted that even though Quincey is an RFA after this season, if he's not part of the plan, I would think his rights are worth at least a 3rd rounder at the draft. That's a steep price to pay for a sort term rental, but not as bad as trading a 1st for a guy who is going to walk.
|3 years 39 weeks ago||It's obviously way too early||
It's obviously way too early to play the TUC cliff game, but I think that the UMD comparison flips if Wisconsin falls off the TUC cliff (and that could happen, they've been terrible in the WCHA and still have to play @Bemidji and @Minnesota. If they fall out, UMD loses a win and a tie in the TUC, which will make the TUC comparison an exact tie (although Michigan will have 2x the TUC games). RPI breaks the 1-1 tie and Michigan get the comparison.
Note1: Both teams will play more TUC games and so it's not really worth breaking this down at this point.
Note2: Common opponents are ND and WMU. UMD is 3-1 against them, but M split both series. Best case scenario, M gets ND in the CCHA quarters and goes 2-0 and WMU in either the semi's or the finals bringing the COp up to 5-2 which won't get it done. M can't catch UMD in COp.

-the IIHF upheld Bertuzzi's NHL suspension, so he wasn't allowed to play overseas during the lockout. This is obviously less punishment than a missed NHL season, but of the lockout hadn't happened, I think the NHL might have given him a one year ban.
-my understanding is that Bertuzzi initially offered substantially more than $350K, but was turned down. If Moore's parents are going to sue for $1MM+ for emotional damage, then I have no problem with Bertuzzi low balling the settlement offer. It's all legal posturing at this point.

|3 years 42 weeks ago||I wouldn't worry about||
I wouldn't worry about MSU/Ohio. Ferris and Western are the teams to watch.
Michigan has the easiest remaining schedule, with their opponents averaging 1.32 points per conference game, but Ferris is 2nd at 1.41. OSU and Miami have the hardest remaining schedules at 1.63.
I've made an attempt to predict the rest of the season by making educated guesses for each of the remaining weekends, and this put Michigan 3rd, behind Ferris and WMU. My prediction for Michigan was 4/3/5/6, while Ferris was 4/3/6/3. This puts M at 50 and FSU at 53.
So, at a minimum, barring a complete Ferris meltdown, Michigan needs to win 3 of the next 4 games (2 against Miami and 2 against State) in regulation. That is tough, but doable.
