At press time, Harbaugh had sent Michigan’s athletic department an envelope containing a heavily annotated seating chart, a list of the 63,000 seat views he had found unsatisfactory, and a glowing 70-page report on section 25, row 12, seat 9, which he claimed is “exactly what the great sport of football is all about.”
|2 years 40 weeks ago||death to pom poms||
It turned out OK, but, at the start the game there was a woman a few rows ahead of me in Section 5. She had hoarded approximately 8 pom poms and had clumped them all together so it looked like she was shaking an enormous fuzzy meatball on a stick, blocking the view of the game for many people behind her. One of said guys behind me, after the first kickoff says, "I gotta say something to her!" and convinced her that her pom pom-ing was excessive. She yielded and everyone went about their merry way.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Video boards||
continue to confuse me. Not only is the person in charge of the game info such as down and yards-to-go wrong nearly every time, but the lack of stats until garbage time isn't helpful. At least twice my brother noticed the video board stat guy thought Umass was going the opposite direction and ticked off the yardage in the wrong direction.
Surely they can create an overlay-style system that puts one long transparent band across the bottom of the screen displaying down and yards plus stats. Then use the bottom mini video display for player stats (correct me if I'm wrong but it currently only shows Player X's name and class and hometown), and other game stats. That Sparty ranter has a good point, and in our case, that mini screen underneath the board can be better used instead of putting "DEFENSE" and "MARCHING-BAND" on it.

It makes for a more satisfying season when Michigan climbs the polls anyway. We all know #8 was too high and it showed. Being ranked high for week 1 is often a curse for Michigan (2002 win vs. Washington the lone exception I can think of). Can't wait to see them leap back into the top 12 to 15 after the Notre Dame game.
Speaking of ND, anyone else shocked they didn't somehow make it into the top 15 after winning one game? Those AP voters are losing their marbles! Or maybe it's the coaches' poll...

I don't think anyone has mentioned the '05 Rose Bowl loss to Texas. No, it wasn't a beatdown but that was a loaded Texas team with Vince Young running all over us. 2006 USC was also extremely good, and a better team than 2007 Oregon. Hope I'm getting my years correct.
Even though I was young that '91 FSU game sticks out. Whew what a team.

Apologies if this was already pointed out earlier in the thread...but, oddly, when I asked my Dad if there was an abundance of piped-in music to the point of ridiculousness, he said he didn't really notice. He sits in the corner opposite the band, so maybe in that part of the stadium it isn't as overbearing? I'm attending Nebraska and OSU this season so I'm curious to find out for myself if that's true. On TV though it is unbearable, since all the sound travels up and their microphones are like mounted on the outside of the press box so it catches it all really clearly and makes me want to watch games on mute :(

|3 years 46 weeks ago||After waking up||
and making sure we weren't all being Inception'd and dreaming within a dream that we won that game, I watched a repeat of Gameday Final 'cause I missed the opening segment with our game's highlights. Denard took that game over, and our clan of receivers have earned my proverbial helmet sticker for getting their act together and catching everything thrown at them in the second half.
tangent observation: I was so confused who was on the field throughout the game due to the jerseys not having names on the back. Plus, I didn't realize a few of the guys changed numbers so I was spending the majority of the defensive possessions figuring out who was making those big plays in the second half! Damn you, pizza dave!

One year they were even inside the stadium concourse (as in not on the field but in a spot where vendors would have been! I wasn't expecting Ingalls Mall but I bet they'll get a huge crowd with it being so centrally located.

On State & Packard is also pretty good, at least the one time I went there, which was just after they opened, before the 2010 Spring Game. That spot is kind of cursed since basically every restaurant/business that has been there has failed, so I hope this place is still there even one year later. I think it's even called Packard Pub or something?

Western spends money on their football program when it is needed (new practice facility, some upgrades to the stadium, though the practice facility was funded partially by donations) but they don't *really* put the kind of effort into it as they should. Case-in-point: they don't charge anything for student tickets, when they are the most reliable source of attendance and energy. Their pregame show back in the day was really great. They'd have a panel with Beckmann, Brandy, sometimes Karsch, and Steve Clark (NOT the same Steve Clark that does WTKA). They'd have the Michigan band or the glee club show up and perform, and have a random fan do the weather report. WTKA's pregame coverage just isn't quite as enjoyable, even though I like that they do the Victor's Lounge across the street from the stadium and have a guy wandering around the tailgates from time to time.
It's kinda like waxing poetic about the days when Michigan Replay was still around, but I think the radio coverage of Michigan is way more important, since people from all over the state and region drive to Ann Arbor for games, and need entertainment!
Even though the core of the broadcast team and quality is still intact, Michigan was more at home on WJR's airwaves. But at least WTKA has a great morning show and afternoon/weekend programs, and has picked up a lot of the slack that WJR's absence left. Related question: Does anyone know how this will affect WTKA's status as an ESPN radio affiliate? Or are they not even that anymore, I can't always listen to their stuff down in DC.

but Borders deserved to die. They should have been bankrupt years ago, I'm amazed they kept operating this long. I worked at the Union Bookstore a few years ago, and bestsellers were always 30 percent off retail at release. Borders would sometimes have 15 percent off or 30 percent off of not as many bestsellers, and would refuse to discount DVDs or music. |5 years 40 weeks ago||Dave Brandon||
...would be a HORRIBLE choice. Run for the hills if that's the direction it looks like Mary Sue is headed in. I personally think he's not a serious candidate, though. He was in the Rich Rod resistance faction of the search committee from everything I've read, and he's old school like Lloyd is. Now that he's no longer a regent his influence is minimal, so it's unlikely they would pick him.
If De Carolis's philosophy is anything like Canham, I think they need to go in that direction. He's going to need to spearhead the Crisler renovations, get the basketball program even more love now that they made the tourney a year ago, and make sure the right Berensen assistant is chosen to coach the hockey team.
I don't know of many others that would be a good option, except for someone like Rick Leach (ha), someone from Michigan Sports Marketing/the Development network, or a young buck like Jamie Morris (half-kidding about that one too.)

His legacy is of course going to be entirely based on the success or failure of the luxury boxes, but Rich Rodriguez can push him into Michigan lore with the eventual national title I think he's going to win. How Mary Sue Coleman is ever going to find someone to continue the financial success and rapid promotion of Martin is going to be, I think, tougher than the coaching search that she rescued from the toilet.

During one instance of "Bawitaba" or however it's spelled, my Dad leaned over and said into my ear, "They really need to wait till they get the new speakers to do that. It's kind of annoying."
He's as much of a loudish music person as I am, but man did that sound awful at some points. Those speakers clearly can't handle some of the songs they want to play, and it reverberates around the stadium like some kind of painful death cry from a dying animal. I was pleased with the music up to this point but this past Saturday made me die a little inside. That was my last game for awhile and I hated that it was partially tarnished by that music...I really hope the guy breaks all his fingers or something before the Deleware State game. I can't imagine what opposing fans think, especially if they come from a stadium where they do piped-in music properly.
Even if they just fix what portions of the songs are played and how long they are played, that would make me feel better...there's been times when even Michigan has the ball and it doesn't shut off in time before Tate is up at the line calling a play!

Yes, the Michigan band does play it during the postgame show, but that kind of defeats the purpose...since ND did theirs before anyone could/want to leave. That's what I'm hoping the M band does, is play the alma mater right after "The Victors" with all the players in the student corner.
And I realize I didn't properly talk up the M band...this appears like I don't love them to death, which is of course false. No better band in the land, I just couldn't hear them over the ND band too often since there's (a) more people in the Irish band and (b) I was literally right behind them :)
|5 years 45 weeks ago||How it all starts...||
...is with casual fans suddenly being transformed into Michigan Men because of games like this one. My dad got me into it while Bo was still coaching and I've never looked back. On Saturday my uncle from Alaska was sitting with me and hadn't been to a Michigan game in 30ish years. At the end he stood there, smiling, and simply said, "that was the best football game I've ever seen." Now he's hooked, he took "Bo's Lasting Lessons" with him on the plane and grabbed the Sunday papers to read all about the victory.
The most fitting image for all of us should be the one that The Michigan Daily has on its front page, of Rich Rodriguez holding his son in his arms on the field and walking into the tunnel.

please for the love of Jeebus. "Seven Nation Army" is one of the most overused songs at college football games, namely Penn State games. It will be a lot better in 2010 when they have the new sound system in the stadium, and for the time being I am in favor of the RAWK music, they just need to tweak when they play it and what songs. Especially since some parts of the stadium can't ever hear the Michigan band because of the acoustics (moreso when an opposing band is there).
Raw crowd noise will always be more intimidating than the stupid key jingling, so if the RAWK helps the noise, then rawk on...I think at least two of ND's delay of game penalties were due to crowd noise (the others being due to the fact that Jimmy Clausen can't count).
