Mani is not only the best Pizza in Michigan, it is competing for best restaurant in A2 as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, it's pricey but I'm willing to pay more for that experience. Everything they make is great. Having lived on the East Coat for several years, I was so upset to lose the thin crust experience when I moved back to MIchigan. Mani isn't as good as the best East Coast pizza in terms of crust/sauce, but it's actually better when it comes to bold ingredients. Their pasta is spectacular too--not the red sauce blandness of traditional italian restaurants.
And yes, Anthony's is amazing but we're talking about apples and oranges. Anthony's is my go-to when I want a food-coma inducing pizza at home. But Mani is a higher-end, sit-down experience. I woudln't eat at Anthony's unless stuck in a blizzard or something.
By the way, after Mani and Anthony's, it's a huge drop off to third place.
I didn't realize I had such strong opinions about pizza...

Thanks for acknowleding one of my points. Unfortunately, the majority of charter schools are not bound to your wife's school's standards. To my other points--Is your wife in a union? Does she receive the same benefits as other teachers in traditional public schools? Is the school non-profit?
|1 year 19 weeks ago||Um...no||
Um...that's not true.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||Hmmm...||
This school seems great but--and this is just my opinion, based on a lifetime dedicated to public schools--charter schools are usually the worst. They self-select the best available kids and trumpet their success, never acknowledging that they removed the cream of the crop from traditional public schools and left the problematic kids behind (thus not really "closing the gap"). Teachers are typically paid less (most charter schools are non-union) and have fewer rights. Many charter schools (I can't speak for this one) are for-profit, and therefore beholden to corporate investors, rather than the good of all kids. I could go on-and-on but, suffice it to say, I'm very wary of supporting charter schools.
To the OP-- I may be TOTALLY wrong about your school. Perhaps (as Ezeh asks above), your school as taken steps to make sure you include a more representative group of students. Perhaps you allow your teachers to unionize and offer competitive payment and benefits. Perhaps you are a non-profit charter. I couldn't find info on any of those things on the website so feel free to correct me.
But at first glance, I would be wary of supporting this cause.

|2 years 14 weeks ago||Important Detail||
This is a small, somewhat insignificant detail but I found it incredibly important when preparing for the GRE.
Being a computerized test, the GRE is adaptive, meaning it changes depending on how you do in the early stages. The way I understand it, the early questions in each section are the most important because they help place you in a range of difficulty that affects the later portions of the test. In other words, if you do really well in the early portion, the test determines that you fall, say, in the 700 - 800 range. Then it starts to give you 700 - 800 level questions and gradually narrows you into a score. Likewise, if you do poorly on the opening stages of each section, there's only so much you can do in the later section because the test has already determined you fall in the, say, 400 - 500 range and the best you can hope for is a 500.
If the questions toward the end of each section are really challenging, it might be a sign that you are doing really well and the test is feeding you particularly challenging questions. That seemed to be the case for me on the verbal section. I took the test twice and did much better the 2nd time even though it felt like I was really struggling toward the end.
But that was partly because I learned about the adaptive nature of the test and prepared to take much more time with the early questions and allowed myself to rush the end of each section.
Caveat: I took the test 7 years ago so it may have changed. Somebody who's taken it lately, feel free to correct me if this is no longer the case.
|2 years 14 weeks ago||Well done||
|2 years 19 weeks ago||Side note:||
Can we finally end the debate about how much the Maize has changed over the years? I know we keep pointing out that the color can be altered in photoshop (and in developing). But when you see five helmets lined up next to each other from several generations of Michigan football (in the same photograph), it's not hard to see that "one of these things is not like the other."
The darker maize looks so much better.

But in defense of the OP, his post reminded me of footage from the last drive of the ND game. I remember wondering who the coach was talking to Denard before he went out on the field. I had never seen him before.
Now after watching it again, I realize it was Manning. And now that I watch it, I have to admit he appears to look legitimately similar to Devin. I think objective viewers would have to agree. and I'm an indie-music aficionado.
The music last year was from Explosions in the Sky, the same band who did the soundtrack for the movie Friday Night Lights (thus, it's use in the Friday Night Lights segments)
But I always thought that music--which has a great dichotomy between slow, lulling moments and big, triumphant moments--never quite lined up with the clips we were seeing on film. There would be soaring, trimphant guitars during a broken play for one yard. Or slow, lulling moments during a 60 yard touchdown. The editing never quite matched the music.
I'm fine with inane hip-hop-ish instrumentals as long as I can still hear the crowd atmosphere above. I thought the music kept the energy up throughout the video. (The Go-Team has some songs you might want to consider).
P.S. But I still think the Radiohead and creeper van pic at the beginning is just kind of weird.

Although to be fair to the author, I don't think she completely projects the failings of DFW's copy-cats on DFW. In fact, she points out that "Wallace isn’t responsible for his imitators, much less for the stylized mess that is Gen-X-and-Y Internet syntax."
She also acknowledges that his "slangy approachability was part of his appeal, and these quirks are more than compensated for by his roving intelligence" and describes him as "inarguably one of the most interesting thinkers and distinctive stylists of (our) generation."
It seems like the majority of her wrath is pointed at the "lesser thinkers" and "opinion mongers" who ape his style, but lack substance, FWIW.
P.S. I'll take the "HOWEVA" as evidence that you will not abandon your "slangy approachability" because that would, like, suck.
P.P.S. I am a sucker for writing that ironically imbeds criticism of itself within its text. The best criticism of The Big Lebowski comes from it's own narrator who declares, "It was a purty good story, dontcha think? ... Parts, anyway."

1) Yes, they do use much better ingredients than anyone else.
2) They pay a living wage to their employees (they also do corporate trainings nationally on how to treat employees)
3) They go out of their way to hire people in need. I'm a teacher and they hired one of the poorest students I've ever taught. They also hired my special needs brother-in-law for seasonal work at the bakehouse.

Also, NFL experience carries a lot of weight, especially w/ recruits.

Funny, I had the same feeling as RR Came in. Though I think RR got a raw deal from many fans, I'm pretty excited to think we may return to that style.
|3 years 34 weeks ago||First of all||
Tom didn't underachieve at UM. He shattered previous single-season passing records while sharing time w/ another NFL prospect. Those records have since been eclipsed by other QBs (Navarre and Henne) but they were also coached by Loeffler.
Secondly- Basically, every starting collegiate quarterback he has recruited and coached has started in the NFL. Griese, Brady, Navarre, Henne, Tebow. Nuff said.

|3 years 35 weeks ago||Thank you Magnus||
I don't always agree with you but I definitely do on this. Give DB time and space. I actually appreciate that he's taking his time to get this right. If we lose a recruit or two in the process, it's minimal compared to getting the wrong HC. Everybody chillax.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||No||
Mullen is the best coach available, period. Denard is only one small consideration. I actually think Mullen might be the best coach available to lead Devin Gardner, considering his experience with similarly built QBs (Tebow/Relf). And we've got DG for 4 more years.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Would you say Harbaugh has an ego?||
Would you have been pissed if we had gotten him? I don't mind ego as long as it's backed up on the field. Mullen has out-coached his competition for years as an offensive coordinator and looks poised to build a winner at MSU.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Agreed||
Denard is a small consideration in the big picture. But I think Mullen is the best coach out there period. He's a great recruiter and has got a confident (arrogant?) attitude (like Harbaugh) but he's able to make us a winner faster because of his ability to work with our current players' talents. In fact, I think he'd be even better with Devin Gardner at QB.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Exactly||
And since when has "ego" been a problem? Weren't we all clamoring for Harbaugh a couple days ago? Didn't Bo have an ego?
|3 years 35 weeks ago||You're kidding, right?||
"Mullen right now is basically Rodriguez without all that pesky BCS success."
Do you remember that he directed the offense of two BCS champions and led Utah to it's BCS win?
Also, he is nothing like Rodriguez. He has coached in the midwest, shown aptitude for hiring good Defensive Coordinators, and 1,000 times better at public speaking.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Not Rodriguez||
Mullen has 1,000 times more charisma and speaking ability than Rodriguez. He's coached in the midwest and has recruiting ties to the area.
About that "wacky spread offense," are you referring to the one that he used during Florida's two national championship seasons? Or the ones Oregon and Auburn will be employing on Monday?
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Not just for Denard||
I actually think Devin Gardner would do better in his offense (more in the Tebow/Relf mold).
|3 years 35 weeks ago||That explains||
why MSU wouldn't want to lose him, but not necessarily how he feels. Don't you think he'd have to consider UM if they called?
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Not same caliber||
But both are tall, QB/FB types. I think DG would do well in that role.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Denard committed to Mullen...||
...at Florida before Mullen left for MSU.
Quotes from Denard about Mullen before the Gator Bowl:
"I basically committed to him," and "He was a nice guy, real genuine," and "The way he used Tebow was perfect for me."
And how about this for an eerily prophetic quote if DB can somehow get Mullen:
"We had built a relationship, and I'm probably going to be his quarterback one day."
|3 years 36 weeks ago||I don't know if he was contacted||
As of early December, he had not been contacted and said he was happy at MSU. Who knows if he would've left if contacted.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Mullen not an outsider||
Unlike Rodriguez, he has Midwest ties. And his spread won him two National Championships at Florida. He's got boatloads more charisma than Rodriguez and would be an absolute slam dunk.
As to your point that he's "not coming"--you may be right.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Coached at ND||
And Bowling Green under Urban Meyer. Not only does he have Midwest experience, but he would keep the recently established Florida pipeline intact. I don't think DB could hit a bigger home run.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Even with new contract||
He makes $2.65M a year. Brandon can outbid that. And his buyout is a manageable $1.4M.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Best. Candidate. Possible.||
Harbaugh's charisma without having to rebuild and wait three years.
Anybody else salivate after watching Mullen's charismatic post-game interview after the Gator bowl? I'd love to see Devin Gardner become his next Tebow / Relf.

I'm tired of everyone making the Dan Hawkins argument. Every coach is different. I can't guarantee Petersen would be better, but it's very possible he could be an amazing coach at a bigger school even though Hawkins wasn't.
For example: John L. Smith left a successful Louisville program for MSU. Failure, right? Does that mean his predecessor was automatically going to be a failure when he tried the same thing? Ask Bobby Petrino.

Probably not worth it's own thread, but this is there anybody out there for whom RR is their 2nd choice?
I'd like to get JH because he's seemingly available and I think he's a badass recruiter and motivator. I think it would be cool to have someone willing to talk some smack to Tressel and back it up on the field.
But if JH isn't available, I'd love to see what RR does next year with an improved defense and kicking game. I'm certainly not happy with the results so far but I can't help looking at Oregon and Auburn and thinking we'd be crazy to move away from the spread.

|3 years 43 weeks ago||Sublet-- Gives you time to search||
I can't recommend highly enough-- try to get a sublet for a month or two, or even a couple weeks. That way, you can spend a week or two walking through neighborhoods and getting a feel for what you like and what you could live with. It's not just about the name of the neighborhood because there are some shitty streets in just about every area listed above, including Park Slope (the definition of Park Slope keeps widening). Bring paper and a pen and write down streets that you'd find desirable.
Then you can spend another week or so looking at listings and you'll actually have an idea if the apartment is near things you like. You'll be an educated buyer and will avoid getting taken advantage of.
I lived in Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope and got lucky both times in finding a place that was under price for the area. But a big part of it was walking around and making lots of calls.
At the time (2002-2005) , I'd get a copy of the Village Voice (in front of the Village Voice headquarters in Greenwich Village) on Tuesday nights before it officially came out on Wednesday. I'd make calls to all the desirable places in my price range on Tuesday nights, mostly leaving messages. That way, the broker or landlord would call me first thing on Wednesday before anyone else and I'd get first viewing of a good deal. That may all be moot now due to the expanded use of the Internet but it worked then.
Good luck. I LOVE Brooklyn and miss it like crazy. It may take a year to really appreciate it because you will be spending lots of money for very little space. But there's SO much going on and you can get to it all on the subway.
P.S. The best burger in the world BY FAR is the panini burger at Bar Toto on 6th Ave and 11th street in Park Slope. Not near anything else, but worth walking to. I still dream of it.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Interesting||
My first inclination was to disagree with you. I've always felt that if the RR experiment didn't work, I'd like to see a return to the Brady/Henne/Mallett throwing to Marquise/Braylon/Mario offensive approach. I miss those long bombs and clearly Harbaugh would be the perfect guy to return them to the pro style.
But your post got me to thinking...what if we were able to hire Chip Kelly? Would he never consider it?
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Rodriguez hired GERG||
There you go. Blame GERG all you want but Rodriguez has to be held accountable for hiring him.
If we win 3 of the next 4 (unlikely, I know, but vaguely possible), I say give RR another year. Otherwise, he's gotta go.

With all the departures, surely we can spare a scholarship on another kicker. No?
|3 years 49 weeks ago||Carvin Johnson?||
What about Carvin Johnson being off the injury report for the first time since the UConn game? Even if he wasn't great in the Indiana game, it seemed like there was a lot of pre-season buzz on him. His injury @ UConn happened right in front of me and I didn't think we'd see him again this year.
I'm thrilled to see him off the injury report. At worst, he provides a much needed breather for the defense. At best, he grows all year and becomes a key contributor by the end.

...and can't stop looking for new articles singing his praises .
But he wasn't ready to QB a Big Ten offense last year.
I will never forget how comforting it was to see Tate run the offense against ND last year. If he hadn't kept hope alive early in the season, just imagine how much more negative the press would've been toward RichRod this past off-season.
I'll always be grateful for Tate keeping this team afloat early last season and restoring faith (even temporarily) in RichRod. And if he's called upon for any reason down the road, it's good to know we've got as talented a QB as Tate waiting in the wings. I'll be cheering like hell for him.
|4 years 3 days ago||I agree.||
I think the OP is right on.
If we allow 20+ points to these teams, we'll know to brace ourselves for a rough go in the Big Ten. If we hold them both to single digits, I think that's a really positive sign. I don't care if they're Div. II or MAC, it would be telling and comforting to know we can lock it down against inferior competition.

|4 years 4 weeks ago||I have no problem with this.||
As much as I hate to admit it, Tressel gets it. He understood from day one that THE GAME mattered more than any other aspect of his job. I'm not a RichRod hater but it did make me cringe during his initial press conference when he referred to the rivalry as "one of the best" in college football. He seems to have changed that tune and emphasized the OSU game more these days but I'd love to hear something like this coming from our camp. I'd love to know that RichRod is setting aside a part of every practice to get better for OSU. No matter what happens this year, if we lose to OSU again, it will be soul crushing. If we win (despite the long odds) I will always have a soft spot for RichRod.

|4 years 8 weeks ago||Yes- great point||
I was just watching the 1979 OSU game :( and was shocked to see Michigan running the option for almost the entire 1st half. And speaking of speedy midgets, Anthony Carter was 5'11'' and Desmond Howard was 5'10''.
So I agree that RR is actually a return to Michigan's century-old tradition rather than a break from it. The question is, is that a good thing? The jury's still out for me.

|4 years 14 weeks ago||I stand by my statement||
Just because steroids were used by some players in the late '80s, it was NOT the steroid ERA.
As Miriam Webster points out, an era is "a period identified by some prominent figure or characteristic feature." I don't think anyone looks back at the '80s and very early '90s and thinks of bulging heads and records being shattered. Most people think of the late '90s and early to mid 2000s as the steroid era.
But since I know you are beyond logic and reasoning, how about a little visual?
Barry Bonds' 1991 baseball card (the year before Selig took over):

Which picture would you (or anyone here) argue was taken during the Steroid Era?

The '90s ARE the Steroid Era.
(and don't get into semantics about how it really started in the '80s. It got out of control in the '90s, under Selig's watch.)
