It was impossible to avoid clumsy execution. The bottom line is that legends jerseys required changing people's numbers. Looked pretty awful. Just outmatched, size wise. The one touchdown came off several toss-up balls in his direction, exploiting his (lack of) height. It was an interesting experiment but I would be shocked if he sees a down of playtime at that position this year. And the fact that he was playing there makes me think coaches don't like his lack of height at the WR position either. I realize this may be reading too much into a Spring game but--I wonder if we will ever see him play a meaningful down (aside from kick returns) with Harbaugh as coach.

Houston is the perfect example of why letting Suh go was the right move. The Texans are 100% locked into having one incredible player on their team. Meanwhile, the Patriots let go a GREAT player (Logan Mankins) right before the season began and won the super bowl.

I think this was absolutely the right move. As good as he is (and I think he's the best DT in the league) I don't think the Patriots or Seahawks would've spent the kind of money he was going to require to lock up. Paying him huge amounts would have been a Texans move. Letting him go is a Patriots move (the same type they employed w/ Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Randy Moss, and Logan Mankins). Football is a team sport and I'm glad to see the Lions focus on spreading money across the whole team.

|42 weeks 2 days ago||Awesome||
I think it's fantastic that Harbaugh is bringing a woman into the football culture at Michigan. I teach at a high school with many students from rough backgrounds and we have a volunteer in the building who all the students refer to as "grandma." Her mere presence in the building has an amazing impact on some of the young men and their behavior at school. We have the ability to call out behavior and say, "is this how you'd behave with your grandma in the room?" And a lot of the time we don't even have to call it out. They are just more respectful with her around.
I think having a "team mom" will have similar positive benefits. A lot of these kids are away from home for the first time in their lives and are surrounded by a lot of temptation. Having a "mom" away from home reminds them of how they might behave with their actual mom around. It also may mitigate some of the male bravado than can sometimes border on misogyny in sports culture. I think it's a great move.

|45 weeks 5 days ago||8-4||
8-4 or 9-3 with one surprising win over either MSU or OSU. It's important to remember that we'll face three very good coaches in our non-conference schedule (Mendenhall, Whittingham, Anderson) and two current top-five teams returning most of their players (OSU and MSU) so anything better than 9-3 is really a stretch.
I expect Shane Morris to be much-improved and steady under Harbaugh's leadership. But I don't expect him to turn into Tom Brady overnight.
I see five games that we should absolutely win (Indiana, Rutgers, Minnesota, Maryland, UNLV)--but I also think it is very possible that we lose one of those in surprising fashion. So I'm expecting 4-5 wins there.
I see 3 games that we should lose based on this past year's success and returning personell (MSU, OSU, and Utah @ Utah). I think we'll win 1 or 2 of those games.
I see four games that could go either way (Penn St, Northwestern, Oregon St., BYU) and I'm thinking we go 2-2 or 3-1 in those games.
That logic gives us a low bar of 7-5 and a high bar of 10-2. I'm splitting the difference and saying 8-4 or 9-3.
Ok, with the gun of realism to my head, I'm saying 8-4.

|51 weeks 3 days ago||If you listen to the podcast||
If you listen to the podcast it sounds like there's an "ooh" factor when the person's name comes up. So I'm ruling out Teryl Austin. But it also sounds like a surprise yet one that makes perfect sense (i.e. good fit) when you think about it. So I'm ruling out Saban and Malzahn. He rules out Bielema and Miles later in the show. So I'm thinking:
They have at least a slight "ooh" factor in that they are established names but they don't seem like absolutely insane possibilities (e.g. Saban). Obviously Bob Stoops would fit that category too but we see his name all over message boards. So if Cowherd is actually reading the boards, Stoops is not the guy.
Also--none of these are probably happening (except, maybe Pinkel) and Cowherd is a douche.

|1 year 1 week ago||Dude||
You are wrong. I watched it frame by frame. Fitzgerald made it to the yellow line. Period. Pereira was speaking without the benefit of frame-by-frame.
I'm a huge Lions fan and wanted to be able to call foul on that call but they got it right. If you want to keep the lie going, go ahead. But you are just wrong.
And yes---they got the Ebron call wrong. Big time. But that's the only one they got wrong.
|1 year 1 week ago||You are wrong about the top one||
My dad and I rewatched the Fitzgerald catch at the end frame-by-frame and realized that he really did make it right to the 1st down line. The frame you chose for that picture does not show how far he actually made it.
But I agree about the terrible spot in the first half that would have given the Lions a first down. That was just a terrible spot.
And the punt was just really weird but I think the refs actually did make the correct call (even if none of us have ever seen it called that way before). But he didn't bat the ball back into play. He caught it and then threw it back into play. According to the rules, they made the correct call. Gotta give Arians credit for even thinking to review it based on that technicality.
Bottom line--the refs screwed up only one of the three above. Lions blew it.

|1 year 2 weeks ago||Agreed--There are better ways||
Agreed--There are better ways to eliminate the hypocrisy that actually, you know, benefit the players.
Pay athletes of revenue generating sports. Period.
That is the crusade we should be fighting for. Not creating a dumbed-down major for kids who wouldn't otherwise be admitted to UM.*
*which, by the way, doesn't exist in the School of Music--those kids all have high GPAs and excellent SAT scores.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Agreed||
I am totally up for paying athletes and am personally a big supporter of the effort to unionize at Northwestern. Athletes of revenue sports are making money for their work and should be paid accordingly. But you can't make that argument while simultaneously saying football is an academic subject and it's "students" are comparable to the students in the School of Music.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||One big problem with this||
But you are wrong (or, at least, misleading) in your comparison to the School of Music.
Yes, prospective students need to submit headshots, videos, recordings, etc. as part of their "DecisionDesk Profile" but they also need to submit a Common Application like everyone else at UM. And as a graduate of the School of Music (BFA Theatre Performance, 2001), I can tell you that my SAT score and GPA were absolutely factors in my admission to UM. I also attended classes that were academically rigorous and required critical thinking and analytical writing far beyond what is expected of most athletes.
I also think the idea that music is "lumped in as an acceptable academic pursuit" ignores the historical tie between the arts and higher education. They are called "liberal arts" for a reason. Arthur Miller, as one example, is considered one of the important moral voices of the 20th century due to his work as a playwright. I know lots of UM football players have accomplished lots of good things beyond the gridiron (Gerald Ford comes to mind) but it's hard to make the connection between their athletic accomplishments and the goals of academia.
In other words, the idea that football is equal to the arts because they both require "hard work" is not enough to justify football's existence as an academic subject.
I don't think you are wrong in criticizing the current role of athletics in education (and, in fact, I agree that it is idiotic to expect athletes to perform at the same academic level as other students) but I think you chose the wrong comparison.
The School of Music is an apple and Football is an orange.

Mani is not only the best Pizza in Michigan, it is competing for best restaurant in A2 as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, it's pricey but I'm willing to pay more for that experience. Everything they make is great. Having lived on the East Coat for several years, I was so upset to lose the thin crust experience when I moved back to MIchigan. Mani isn't as good as the best East Coast pizza in terms of crust/sauce, but it's actually better when it comes to bold ingredients. Their pasta is spectacular too--not the red sauce blandness of traditional italian restaurants.
And yes, Anthony's is amazing but we're talking about apples and oranges. Anthony's is my go-to when I want a food-coma inducing pizza at home. But Mani is a higher-end, sit-down experience. I woudln't eat at Anthony's unless stuck in a blizzard or something.

They self-select the best available kids and trumpet their success, never acknowledging that they removed the cream of the crop from traditional public schools and left the problematic kids behind (thus not really "closing the gap"). Teachers are typically paid less (most charter schools are non-union) and have fewer rights. Many charter schools (I can't speak for this one) are for-profit, and therefore beholden to corporate investors, rather than the good of all kids. I could go on-and-on but, suffice it to say, I'm very wary of supporting charter schools.
To the OP-- I may be TOTALLY wrong about your school. Perhaps (as Ezeh asks above), your school as taken steps to make sure you include a more representative group of students. Perhaps you allow your teachers to unionize and offer competitive payment and benefits. Perhaps you are a non-profit charter. I couldn't find info on any of those things on the website so feel free to correct me.
But at first glance, I would be wary of supporting this cause.

I went to middle school in Ann Arbor during the Fab Five era. I was the only one rooting for Calbert Cheaney and Alan Henderson. That was miserable.

I wonder what a close-up of his finger w/ the stache (in the place where Denard's helmet currently resumes) would look like? Anyone with photoshop skills wanna give it a whirl?

Dear Dave Brandon,
Why do you hate me? I care about your product (Michigan Football) more than any 34-year-old probably should. I'm a lifelong fan and an alum. I attend games. I cherish memories of Harbaugh and Morris, Desmond's "the catch," Biakabatuka's 313 yds. vs. Ohio, Mercury Hayes vs. Virginia, Woodson vs. everyone, Brady in 2000 Orange Bowl, Marquise Walker's catch vs. Iowa, Perry vs. MSU, Braylonfest, Manningham vs. Penn St, Tate and Denard vs. ND. In other words, I'm fully invested. I live for this.
It seems like you care more about people who are not like me.
P.S. This is not just about the uniformz.

That picture of corn comes from the first page of a google image search for "maize." There are lots of pictures of corn the same color. Nothing close to the highlighter color on the front page of that search. When people think of maize, they think of this kind of corn, not corn that you buy in the store (which is brighter but still not close to the highlighter color above).
|3 years 7 weeks ago||But you would eat highlighter colored corn?||
But you would eat highlighter colored corn? Sure, there are lots of shades of corn, but maize as a color is commonly known as being an oranger shade of yellow. The color of indigenous and dried corn.

2. A light yellow to moderate orange yellow.

|3 years 25 weeks ago||Important Detail||
This is a small, somewhat insignificant detail but I found it incredibly important when preparing for the GRE.
Being a computerized test, the GRE is adaptive, meaning it changes depending on how you do in the early stages. The way I understand it, the early questions in each section are the most important because they help place you in a range of difficulty that affects the later portions of the test. In other words, if you do really well in the early portion, the test determines that you fall, say, in the 700 - 800 range. Then it starts to give you 700 - 800 level questions and gradually narrows you into a score. Likewise, if you do poorly on the opening stages of each section, there's only so much you can do in the later section because the test has already determined you fall in the, say, 400 - 500 range and the best you can hope for is a 500.
If the questions toward the end of each section are really challenging, it might be a sign that you are doing really well and the test is feeding you particularly challenging questions. That seemed to be the case for me on the verbal section. I took the test twice and did much better the 2nd time even though it felt like I was really struggling toward the end.
But that was partly because I learned about the adaptive nature of the test and prepared to take much more time with the early questions and allowed myself to rush the end of each section.
Caveat: I took the test 7 years ago so it may have changed. Somebody who's taken it lately, feel free to correct me if this is no longer the case.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Well done||
|3 years 29 weeks ago||Side note:||
Can we finally end the debate about how much the Maize has changed over the years? I know we keep pointing out that the color can be altered in photoshop (and in developing). But when you see five helmets lined up next to each other from several generations of Michigan football (in the same photograph), it's not hard to see that "one of these things is not like the other."
The darker maize looks so much better.

Excellent research on a pressing subject. Thank you for your contribution.

|4 years 8 weeks ago||In defense of the OP||
At first, my reaction was the same as everyone else here. The pictures look nothing alike.
But in defense of the OP, his post reminded me of footage from the last drive of the ND game. I remember wondering who the coach was talking to Denard before he went out on the field. I had never seen him before.
Now after watching it again, I realize it was Manning. And now that I watch it, I have to admit he appears to look legitimately similar to Devin. I think objective viewers would have to agree. (2:09 into the following YouTube clip). Again. the pictures were a bad example but I can see where the OP was coming from when seeing him in person, FWIW.

|4 years 13 weeks ago||I disagree||
and I'm an indie-music aficionado.
The music last year was from Explosions in the Sky, the same band who did the soundtrack for the movie Friday Night Lights (thus, it's use in the Friday Night Lights segments)
But I always thought that music--which has a great dichotomy between slow, lulling moments and big, triumphant moments--never quite lined up with the clips we were seeing on film. There would be soaring, trimphant guitars during a broken play for one yard. Or slow, lulling moments during a 60 yard touchdown. The editing never quite matched the music.
I'm fine with inane hip-hop-ish instrumentals as long as I can still hear the crowd atmosphere above. I thought the music kept the energy up throughout the video. (The Go-Team has some songs you might want to consider).
P.S. But I still think the Radiohead and creeper van pic at the beginning is just kind of weird.
|4 years 13 weeks ago||Wow||
Very sad. It's hard to think of a journalist more tied to a particular sports team in Michigan.
|4 years 13 weeks ago||Like the post||
Don't necessarily like the whole "Creeper Van" thing. Though I get that you're being tongue-in-cheek, I'm not sure recruits who read this site will. They might just find it, well, creepy.
But if you're going to stick with that theme, at least update the song at the beginning. Radiohead released that when I was in middle school and I'm 33.
The Lonely island, perhaps?

|4 years 14 weeks ago||Excellent points||
Although to be fair to the author, I don't think she completely projects the failings of DFW's copy-cats on DFW. In fact, she points out that "Wallace isn’t responsible for his imitators, much less for the stylized mess that is Gen-X-and-Y Internet syntax."
She also acknowledges that his "slangy approachability was part of his appeal, and these quirks are more than compensated for by his roving intelligence" and describes him as "inarguably one of the most interesting thinkers and distinctive stylists of (our) generation."
It seems like the majority of her wrath is pointed at the "lesser thinkers" and "opinion mongers" who ape his style, but lack substance, FWIW.
P.S. I'll take the "HOWEVA" as evidence that you will not abandon your "slangy approachability" because that would, like, suck.
P.P.S. I am a sucker for writing that ironically imbeds criticism of itself within its text. The best criticism of The Big Lebowski comes from it's own narrator who declares, "It was a purty good story, dontcha think? ... Parts, anyway."
|4 years 14 weeks ago||Zingermans prices||
Just a quick two cents on Zingermans prices:
1) Yes, they do use much better ingredients than anyone else.
2) They pay a living wage to their employees (they also do corporate trainings nationally on how to treat employees)
3) They go out of their way to hire people in need. I'm a teacher and they hired one of the poorest students I've ever taught. They also hired my special needs brother-in-law for seasonal work at the bakehouse.
I gladly pay more at Zingermans, knowing they spend it well.

Not to be a downer, but to me he doesn't look as fast as Breaston (let alone Desmond or Ginn as other commenters suggest). I'm excited about this kid but I think it's important to not put unrealistic expectations on his shoulders. I mean he's fast but there a few clips of defenders catching up to him. Once Breaston, Desmond, or Ginn were past you, nobody was going to catch them.

"In terms of cultivating recruiting relationships with HS coaches in Michigan and Ohio, one has recruited in the midwest for 3 years and the other for 16 years."
CB recruited like a beast in the midwest. All the more impressive that he only had 3 years to cultivate those relationships.
Also, NFL experience carries a lot of weight, especially w/ recruits.
|4 years 42 weeks ago||WTF!!!||
Please tell me this isn't true. Corwin Brown would be the PERFECT coach for our DBs. This would be a horrific oversight, and the worst move made by the Hoke regime so far, if it turns out to be true. Who cares about anything he said while he was at ND. The dude is a monster recruiter, former DC at a top national program, and a current DB coach under Bill mf-ing Belichick. This would have been an absolute home run hire and to think he didn't get an interview, let alone a phone call, is an absolute shame.

Funny, I had the same feeling as RR Came in. I supported him fully and wanted to win above all else, but I was legitimately sad to think we would no longer see future NFL QBs throwing bombs to 6'4" receivers who adjusted mid-air and outmuscled tiny CBs. Though I think RR got a raw deal from many fans, I'm pretty excited to think we may return to that style.
|4 years 44 weeks ago||First of all||
Tom didn't underachieve at UM. He shattered previous single-season passing records while sharing time w/ another NFL prospect. Those records have since been eclipsed by other QBs (Navarre and Henne) but they were also coached by Loeffler.
Secondly- Basically, every starting collegiate quarterback he has recruited and coached has started in the NFL. Griese, Brady, Navarre, Henne, Tebow. Nuff said.
*Add Mallett in the near future if you like.

Dude turned around an entire Pizza franchise. I think he's got this.
P.S. He's not getting Chip Kelly. He's one of the highest paid coaches at a NC competing school and he has a $4M buyout.
P.P.S. I'm a BIG fan of Mullen who's got a more modest contract and only has a $1.4M buyout.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||Thank you Magnus||
I don't always agree with you but I definitely do on this. Give DB time and space. I actually appreciate that he's taking his time to get this right. If we lose a recruit or two in the process, it's minimal compared to getting the wrong HC. Everybody chillax.
|4 years 46 weeks ago||No||
Mullen is the best coach available, period. Denard is only one small consideration. I actually think Mullen might be the best coach available to lead Devin Gardner, considering his experience with similarly built QBs (Tebow/Relf). And we've got DG for 4 more years.
