to such up a D-B like Dantonio is to whoop them on the field. Until we do that more than once every six years we shouldn't have a whole lot to say about anything.

I know he's been ID'd on this Board before, but I wanted to reiterate that he is one of the toughest SOB's and best Centers Michigan has ever seen. Played with a broken jaw. Broke his right hand and learned how to snap left handed before the next game! 1st rd pick of the Cleveland Browns. This is definately the type of former player we want around the program.

No Division 1 athlete needs "bulletin board material" to get fired up for a game. If they do, then they should not be playing B1G football. The whole notion of "bulletin board material" is media propoganda.

6/8 and Belien clearly outcoaches Izzo. All Sparty has to hold onto is their belief that "Nothing matters until March." They are clinging to the belief that March will come, Payne will join the lineup, then suddenly they will be back to a #1 seed despite all of the above-mentioned struggles in B1G play. A couple more early Sparty tourney exits and deep Michigan runs and these excuses will also fade away.
|1 year 30 weeks ago||My hunch, too||
I agree this is more likely an eligiblity issue than 'internal' discipline. If so, Dantonio cannot run the risk of playing an ineligible player. Time will tell.

The article is a pretty good read and a good take on how corporate greed is ruining college football and basketball. The overall theme of the article is that Brandon is turning his back on lifelong and loyal fans, particularly season ticket holders, in favor of making a quick buck. He makes a great point that anybody that faithfully attendned MBB games and kept their season tickets through the Elerbe and Amacker eras should not be forced out of the lower bowl because they cannot afford to pay the exorbarant fees for the "privilege" of continuing to pay for the seats that they earned. I also love the comparison to Jerry Jones! Well done, sir.

I attendned his speech at the Detroit Athltetic Club a month or two after his hire. Any doubts I had going into that night were quickly erased. As many have said, he "gets" what he means to be at Michigan. He has an uncanny ability as a speaker to express this on a level that leaves his intended audience nothing short of ready to run through a brick wall for him. I can't imgagine what it would be like to be a 17 / 18 year old kid again and hearing this one-on-one. Throw in Mattison and you can see why yesterday happened. It'g going to be a great ride over the next few seasons to see what he and his coaches can do with these kids. As the saying goes..."It's great....to be...a Michigan Wolverine!" GO BLUE!!!

|3 years 45 weeks ago||Big Difference....||
|3 years 45 weeks ago||WTF!?!||
This thinking is not the Michigan way. This is exactly the kind of mentality that Hoke and Co. are trying to purge from this program. "Fly under the radar a little longer" so an unraked SDSU team is not "motivated" for a game in the Big House? Bo just turned over in his grave. I'm sorry, I don't mean to call anybody out personally, but as a lifelong fan and alumnus it sickens me that our program has sunk to this type of low. ANY team coming to the Big House should be motivated as all hell and we should be wearing a great big bulls eye on our chests that reads "We ARE Michigan...COME GET SOME"!!! Thank God Hoke and Mattison are righting this ship.

I was at the UM football camp the year after he broke his hand. Really great guy! I had the pleasure of drinking with him and his cousins after a game in Atlanta in the summer '07 (maybe '08). He was hurt that year and it was his first start coming off a two month DL stin. He actually pitched a 6 inning, 2 hit, 0 ER game, and we ran into them at this little bar later that night. We flew in from Detroit just for the Tigers v Braves series and I thought it was the coolest move ever that he let us drunken idiots, still in our Tigers jerseys, hang out and have one hell of a story to tell for the rest of our lives.

I was not crazy about the Hoke hire, but he has done everything right in the two months he has been on board. Mattison was a huge hire for him and we will see a defense this fall that will be fundamentally light years ahead of the RR defenses. Hoke is our coach and I support him 100%.....however, I too, am still disheartened by the anti-RR faction that developed. People were too quick to forget that RR was brought in to change the system of the past 30 years. Whill RR did not do himself many favors, I will always wonder what year 4 would have brought.

to have a backup QB that can come in and win us games. Due to the lack of injury update on Denard as the game played out, I was actually wondering if RR brougth in Tate because we had been shredding Illinois on the pass all day. Not trying to start a QB controversey or even suggest Denard isn't THE guy, because he is, I'm just saying I had 100% confidence in Tate when he came into the game. It reminds me a bit of Major Applewhite at Texas when he lost the starting gig to Chris Simms. Different situations, but both Tate and Major have that 'moxy' to come in and finish games out. GO BLUE!

|4 years 40 weeks ago||Former Navy palyer's take...||
I played for Navy in the mid-90s for two years, and left after my sophomore year as I didn't care for the military lifestyle. My freshman year the team won 3 or 4 games and the coach was canned (ran a pro-style offense) and Charlie Weatherbie was hired. Weatherbrie brought in Paul Johonson as the offensive coordinator, as well as the tripple option scheme. At that point, Air Force had been the dominant academy with their own tripple option. We had graduated a senior QB who went on to spend some time with the Colts and a TE who was drafted by the Lions. The following season, with the option, we began to flurrish. The scheme is better suited for the smaller athletic lineman at the academies (we were taught to chop block) and the skill players, few of whom have the NFL measureables. What would have been my junior season, the team went 9-3 and made their first bowl game in decades, in which they beat Cal in Steve Mariucci's final year, and had NFL players Deltha ONeal, Bobby Shaw and Ryan Longwell. Paul Johnson subsequently left for Georgia Southern, and repalced Charlie Weatherbie as the head coach around '99 or 2000. This is when Navy really began to succeed and led to him getting the gig at Georgia Tech. The current guy (won't even attempt to spell his name) was Johnson's right hand guy, and continues to run the same offense.
Navy has made a bowl game six years in a row and I attribute the succes to a combination of the system and inelligence and discipline of the athletes. When I was there, we had about five or six guys on the team that claimed to have passed up SEC / BIG 10 caliber opportunities. Everyone else, myslef included, were probably lower MAC level type recruits, who happened to excel academically. As I said before, the option system helps levle the playing the field against NFL-caliber athletes, particularly on offense, and the defense tends to play disciplined assignment football. As there is little opportunity for a social life at the academies, football is a special time away from the military side of things, and these guys literally give it their all when they have the chance to practice, train, watch film, etc. Also, there is also very little turnover once guys make it to their sophomore and junior years. Most wash out freshman year. There are virtually never situations where players are leaving after three years, so you have depth charts filled heavily with juniors and seniors.
The NCAA requirements apply to the academies, witht the exception that they are not hindered by scholarship limits, as everyone who attends is on a 'full ride.' Each year they send about 40-50 guys to their own prep school (Navy's is called NAPS), in which they field a team and play JUCO teams, so it's essentially like a red shirt year. I went in to the academy directly, and we had about 60 or so guys in my freshman class, between the NAPS guys and those they brought in directly. However, about a third or so were cut after three days of practice, though they stayed at the Academy. Thus, the team does not carry many more than your typical D1 team.
I apologize for the sloppy writing as I've been tossing them back since about 2:30. I'll stop the rambling and will try to provide any additional info in response to other posts. GO NAVY! and GO BLUE!
|4 years 40 weeks ago||Depends....||
You are not locked in until you start your junior year classes. If you leave before then, you owe nothing. If you leave junior or senior year, you owe the value of your time at the academy to that pont (including tuition, room, board, pay, benefits, etc). Some guys that get drafted will fulfill a modified service duty (see David Robinsonm, Caleb Campbell), which is usually a year or two of cake military obligations, surrounded by athletic training. I think the Army actually made Campbell go be a grad assitant for the Army football team rather than play for the Lions. Others may quit either before they are locked in (see Mike Wahl, an OL from Navy that was drafted by the Packers in a supplemetnal draft) or outright resign and owe the money (Kevin Hickman, a TE from Navy drafted by the Lions in 94 or 95).
|4 years 40 weeks ago||500 yards of offense...||
against one of the top defenses in the country. Outgained Iowa by 100 yds in the second half with our back-up QB. Yet you claim RR is getting 'out-coached'? Having two kick-offs go out of bounds is simply bad luck. Refelcts nothing on the coaching. The defense is still extremely young and still making mental mistakes. This will improve and these games will turn into wins.
|4 years 41 weeks ago||2002 Grad||
I had a mixed undergard GPA. 2.5 at the Naval Academy and 3.98 at UM. I got in with a 172 on LSAT. Most of the guys I hung around with were in the 165-170 range and from out-of-state. My buddy that did all 4 years at UM undergrad had a 3.7/167 and was wait-listed for a year. The numbers may be a little toughter with the economy in the tank the past few years and fewer good paying jobs right out of college leads to increased applications. I believe, though, that UM is requried to take 1/3 of its class from in-state. The good news is the LSAT tests skills, and you can certainly train yourself to do well on it. I took the Kaplan course and ordered every prior test available to practice with. Timing is the key to the test. Good luck!

My grandparents on my Mom's side came over from Ireland and I was born and raised catholic, however I can still remember throwing my 'M' hat at the TV at the age of 12 when Bo kicked the ball to Rocket Ismail the second time in '89. My old man went to UM so I was raised Maize and Blue despite the Irish-Catholic heritage, and I've hated ND as long as I can remember. My hatred is solidified each Christmas as my cousin and her husband both went to ND, and they are your prototypical golden domer slappies that we all hate so much. Truly one of the all-time greats! He could have easily packed it in after his junior year for the NFL. Instead, he led by example as a senior and much of the success we've experienced early this season and will continue to experience is a direct result of the work ethic and intensity our younger players picked up from BG. He should always be remembered as one of the key cogs in getting RR's program running at the elite level it will soon be at. I will definately be rooting for BG every Sunday!

Last year I was at the game with the MSU flunkie (by that I mean he flunked out during his second year, but remains a fan), and lost $200 straight-up. It was $100 initially, but upped it to $200 on the walk into the game. Damn OT missed tackles!

|4 years 49 weeks ago||This unfortunate situation||
This unfortunate situation brougth back a memory of Eric Mayes, the senior captain of the famed 1997 squad, who went down very early in the season with a knee injury. I Googled his name as I couldn't recall exactly what game he went down. Came across a pretty inspiring introudciton to the 1997 season. We all know how it ended, but perhaps some forgot how it looked pre-season. Obviously comparing apples to oranges, and it's from Wikpedia (not the greatest citation), but at this point of the night and all the negativity around here, I'll take anything:
Going into the 1997 season, Michigan faced low expectations. The Wolverines were ranked No. 17 in the pre-season Coaches' Poll and had experienced four consecutive four-loss seasons for the first time since the 1934–1937 Michigan Wolverines football teams. Michigan had not won a national championship in nearly 50 years and had not played in a Rose Bowl Game since the 1992 season. The 1997 Michigan team was the first since the 1969 team to have no Rose Bowl veterans. In early September 1997, The Columbus Dispatch wrote off Michigan, noting that "the longtime beast of the Big Ten ... has lost much of its aura" and predicting that Michigan's 1997 schedule "doesn't create a feeling that the pendulum is about to swing back."

So, after a week of sleeping on the couch (fighting with the fiancee) and sitting through a five hour deposition that never should have lasted past two hours, I come out to this news. I have not read through the thread, so if this has already been stated, I apologize, but, as a two-time alumni (undergrad / law) and second generation UM grad (old man graduated in late 60's), and a devoted fan to the progam since birth, I have never been so thoroughly disgusted with any facet of the University as I am with admissions right now. I was in law school through the meat and bones of the admission lawsuits, and to think the same University (that preached diversity / opportunity / etc) during those cases just turned away this kid makes me want to puke. I won't even comment on his 5* status, our greatest position of need, and the impact this will have on RR's future recruting, as I'm sure this thread is full of that. For the first time in my life, I am truly ashamed to be a Michigan Wolverine.

a Big 10 team, or any D-1 team for that matter, "stepped up" or "really committed" themsleves to the off-season conditioning program is complete horseshit. That's like saying a Big 10 or D-1 team nees headline materials from an opponent to get "motivated" or "fired up" for a game. If you're playing at the D-1 level, particularly for the Big Ten, you should already be committed 100% to the off-season conditioning, just like you should be fired up and motivated for every game. I just find it hard to believe that this "extra effort" in the offseason translated into a national championship. If they weren't working that hard already, they shouldn't be playing at Michigan, let alone any other D-1 program.

to individual positions. There are just as many speed / conditioning workouts in the winter as there are lifting. In my experience at a D-1 program in the mid-90s, everything is closely monitored by the training staff. We were given a target weight, in part based on position, which if you were under you got to eat a lot more, if you were over, you did extra cardio. We did our running in positions groups, with times and drills tailored to the position. For example, I played tight end freshman year and then was moved to center. When this happened, my target weight went up by 15-20 lbs and the running with the OL became a lot easier than with the TE/LB's.

Let's not forget Spartan great Eric Knott, who PLEAD GUILTY, to 4th degree CSC, after being charged with rape, while being actively recruited by MSU, who even honored their scholarship offer. According to McCabe, this is not as bad as being ARRESTED for robbery, but being ACQUITTED. D-O-U-C-H-E!
MSU knew about sex charge
BY DAVID A. MARKIEWICZ,
Former MSU coach Nick Saban said Wednesday that he and his successor, Bobby Williams, discussed the case involving Henry Ford tight end Eric Knott in the middle of last season. Knott, the subject of an intense national recruiting battle, confirmed Monday that he planned to accept an athletic scholarship from MSU next Wednesday, the first day players officially can accept scholarships.
But Michigan State officials aren't saying whether they still plan to offer a scholarship to Knott, who faces trial March 15 on charges that he raped a 13-year-old Detroit girl last July.
University president M. Peter McPherson would not comment about Knott, citing NCAA rules that prohibit discussion of recruits. Williams could not be reached for comment.
An NCAA spokeswoman said MSU could say what its policy was for such cases, but not make comments about the athlete.
Knott is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. If convicted of the felony, he would face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. He will be tried as an adult because of the severity of the case, prosecutors said, even though he was 17 at the time of the incident. Knott, who turned 18 this month, is pleading not guilty, his attorney said.

Been doing this schedule ever since I finished school in 2002. Can't bitch too much...better than not having enough work to come in or no job at all!

when Clausen got KO'd at the goal line and lost a fumble. He was down for several minutes and the coach / trainer was tending to him. I think Jimmahh is as douche-y as the next guy, but can't fault him for getting the f$%k-knocked out! Go Navy!

I was sitting in the bar with my State buddy, screaming to kick it before they were lining up. Yet somehow I got dinged -10 points on another thread for my only drunken-post yesterday, stating RR should have kicked it. I would like someone to explain how the odds of M def actually making a stop, with 4:40 left on the clock, are somehow dramatically less than converting on 4th and 10, getting a TD, and then getting the 2 pt conversion???
|5 years 37 weeks ago||He has at least 4 years to get his players in...||
but why the f&$% don't you kick the field go with 4:40 left? You're down by 8 and have 4th and 10??? This was the first loss that I place squarely on the shoulders of RR.
|5 years 38 weeks ago||That's based on my experience...||
I played two years at Navy, and they didn't even have them available. My brother played at Toledo and the same thing. They slightly hinder your running ability, and you don't have a ball or puck flying around at 100 mph. It was actually pretty rare that anyone took a shot in games, or even practice.
|5 years 38 weeks ago||Thanks for your outlook, Brian||
I felt as shitty as anyone on Sat evening, having been born to a Michigan alumni and earning two degrees from UM myself. I found myself sitting in a bar Sat night, thinking to myself how the day will be better if Minnesota hols their lead against Sparty. I then had an epiphany....suddenly realizing I was becoming like Sparty fan, i.e. by judging my day not how my team does, but rather whether or not Sparty failed. I immediately slapped myself across the face, and talked the bartender into changing the TV in front of me from the Spaty game to the World Series. I realized two things: (1) things are not as bad as the last two weeks have shown (for all the reasons already pointed out on this board); (2) we can still meet my pre-season prediction of 8 wins by winning two of our last three games and our bowl opponent. Assuming one of those wins is against the Buckeyes, these last two weeks will quickly be forgotten. Please everybody, keep the faith, keep behind OUR team, and GO BLUE!
Oh, as to the shot to the nuts, college football players don't wear cups, so he likely got him pretty good.
|5 years 39 weeks ago||Jamaica - Sophmore Year||
Our first night out at the bars...wasted....and loose one guy. Head back to the hotel not knowing what happened to him. Pull up to the hotel in the cab and there is our boy....but he's wearing women's clothes!
His story is as follows: He says he left the bar with a hooker and agreed to pay $50 to bang her. They took a cab to her place (he had no idea where he was)...he bangs her...and then she jumps out of bed, grabs his clothes and pulls out a knife demanding $100! He says he told her to fuck off, puts on her clotes, and takes off down the street. He comes up to a random hotel gate, tells the guard he doesn't have any money, but needs to get to the Royal Islander Hotel (can't remember if this was the actual name). The guard says...hey man, this IS the Royal Islander!
We pull up at this point, and the hooker and some Jamaican are there demanding $100. I send the guy to our room to get the money and pay her...reasoning he doesn't want to be walking around all week in fear of getting his throat slit. He pays her, gives her clothes back..gets his clothes back...and all ends well.
|5 years 39 weeks ago||My point was...||
Penn St, probably the best D we'll see all year, knew D-Rob was going to run, yet our offense was getting pretty good chunks of yardage with either D-Rob or Minor running it. If you take that running ability D-Rob brings (i.e., able to gain first downs when the D knows a run is 95% likely), and add to being able to competently throw TE seam routes (i.e. the one we saw to Kroger) and other low risk throws (one or two reads, if nothing open, tuck and run) D-Rob will develop into a pretty good 'starter.' Will he ever be good enough to attempt 30+ passes in a game? Unlikely. But, the offense could be pretty successful with D-Rob running the Pat White version of RR's spread.
|5 years 39 weeks ago||Lack of playmayking at WR||
The original post points out the lack of play-makers at WR. I agree...and also point out that RR must have known what he was doing after all with the 5 verbals we have from WRs for next year's class.
I also finally got around to watching the first half of the Penn St game yesterday (I was driving to the UP on Sat and listening on the radio), and was actually impressed with D-Rob's second quarter drive, sans the last throw that led to the INT. Even though Penn St knew he was running, he was still getting good chunks of yardage, and hit a wide open Kroger who dropped the ball. It wasn't a perfect throw, but still one Kroger should have caught for a 20 to 30 yard gain. I could see D-Rob developing into a pretty good starter, once he stops making the freshman mistakes and has a year or two in the system. I'm not saying he'll ever be a better 'QB' than Tate, but I'm pretty excited for both of them to continue playing together over the next three years.

|5 years 40 weeks ago||Subi's||
I grew up near there and know the manager. It's a decent place, but not the place you want to drive from Ann Arbor to go. If you're going to make the drive, visit the following in this order:
(1) Flight Club - approx 25 min from AA
(2) Penthouse Club (on 8 mile) approx 20 min from Flight Club
If you're still not satisfied, continue down 8 mile to either Trump's or Colliseum. However, talent-wise, the Flight Club is top-notch. It is a bit pricey, but you'll enjoy it. Penthouse is not too far behind, and a little bit cheaper. Subi's is good for it's area, but again, not worth the drive from AA.
Another route is Michigan Ave from the Flight Club. When you head East, there are the following places in Dearborn (all about 10 min from the Flight Club): Silver Cricket, BT's and Pantheon Club. All are decent, a step down from Flight Club / Penthouse.
Keep going East and you'll get into Detroit and some more clubs down Michigan Ave. These are another step-down, and I would not reccomend them. The above places should keep you more than occupied! Enjoy!

|5 years 40 weeks ago||There was a link to an article...||
here several months back that analyzed the last 5 or 6 recruiting classes and how each individual player panned out / didn't pan out / left early, etc. It was a pretty good analysis that showed the talent level was down for a number of reasons, but not necessarily due to Lloyd. A lot had to do with almost out entire offense matriculating after Lloyd's last year (Henne, Hart, Mario, etc). Anyone have the link? Would be very useful to this thread.
|5 years 41 weeks ago||I don't mean to sound insensative....||
but I'm surprised the cops did what they did over a $100 bucks and a broken cup. I had my condo broken into and the cops wouldn't even try to get a print, let alone do any real investigating. I told them my neighbor had a crack-head boyfriend who saw me leaving with my suitcases (was going to Vegas), and I don't think they even ever questioned the guy. 99.9% sure it was him.
I understand your frustrations, but the cops are on a budget, overworked, and likely won't do anymore for you. It would seem if you bitch enough to the hotel they should reimburse whatever is missing and comp you a couple free nights, as they are the ones that dropped the ball.

|5 years 41 weeks ago||Excellent post...||
While I was of the opinion it was time for Lloyd to retire, I have never thought he was anything but a class act and a true Michigan man. After all the years and time he has given to the program, I find it difficult to believe,whether he likes Rich Rod or not, that he would put the players in any type of compromising position, including trying to sabotage the head coach. If Lloyd were to go public on these issues, Rosen-puke and his cohorts at the freep would twist it negatively and have a field day. This is Rich Rod's program now, and Lloyd is doing the right thing by staying behind the scenes.

I've check my high school's scores in about 10 years. (I've been out 15, my brother 12). Sometimes people move on to other things. To some, hunting is religion. I remember when I was in school there was a high school in northern michigan that made the playoffs (when it was still hard to do), but had to forefit because a large majority of the team would not miss opening day of deer season for the playoff game! This was in the early to mid-90s....anyone remember the school?

for your grammar and type-o policing. The Board is certainly better off that you took the time to point out my type-o and "poor choice" of the term "ghetto." However, I do believe that in your future post, you should focus on adding substantive comments to the topic, as opposed to spelling and grammar checks. This is a UM football board, not a 10th grade grammar class.

for acting like a complete jackass. What "respect" do you deserve from the team that has owned you to the tune of 67-29-5 over the 101 games played. If you want "respect," shut your mouth, play the game, and win two in a row for the first time in 44 years.
|5 years 43 weeks ago||I agree...||
Does anyone not remember how awful Sheridan was last year? It's never been about his preparation or knowledge of the playbook, the guy simply does not have the athletic ability to play QB at the D-1 level. Let's not forget, he was a walk-on, and his old man was a former coach. I'm not certain if his old man was coaching at the time he walked on to the program, but I'm pretty certain that's the only reason he's even on the team.
|5 years 43 weeks ago||I love it!||
I have $100 on next week's game with my Sparty buddy, as well as $100 on UM winning 8 games...and $100 that Sparty does not win 8 games. These bets were all made after spring ball, and I'm looking pretty good right now!

I was in the office following the Spartina game online and shut it down after the CHIPS missed the two-point conversion. Got a text from my best buddy (a Spartina die heard) saying "oh fuck". |5 years 45 weeks ago||Most coaches would have run the ball three times...||
but that pass on 2nd down was wide open and should have been completed. It was a freshman WR that ran a bad route. If he catches that ball...first down...UM may not have gotten the ball back...ND wins...and ND nation is calling Jabba a genius.
My cousin and her husband went to ND and her hubbie is a diehard. He is calling for Jaba's head and thinks Gruden is their next coach. That hire would scare me just a little bit...at least until I immediately remembered that we'll have Tate under center for three more years!
|5 years 45 weeks ago||I agree we beat a good team...||
probably the best QB / WR combo we'll see all year. With that being said, I was a bit concerned about the lack of pressure we were getting all day. The defense also looked like it was getting pushed around by ND's OL. However, the D came up with big plays when they needed them.
As for Tate, I think we can officially end our concerns about having a "freshman" QB. He clearly plays beyond his years and is a superstar in the making. I'm not ready to hand him the Heisman just yet, but he clearly carried our offense yesterday and I don't have any concerns about him cracking in East Lansing. Hopefully we can take care of business the next two weeks....get healthy...and role into EL 4-0 with all of our cogs running full speed. Little brother, get ready for a beat down!

All this b.s. about Spartina "owning the state" and a "changing of the guard" makes me want nothing more than to lick the tears of every Spartina fan that has engaged in this nonsensical behavior. Plus, I think I actually hate Dantonio more than Jabba and sweater vest. As i saw someone post over on the CMU thread....Little brother's fall is coming before their pride! GO BLUE!

|5 years 50 weeks ago||I agree...||
The offensive improvement in general should help even Sheridan, but I still don't think to the level that would allow for a Denard redshirt, which was the original point of the article.
|5 years 50 weeks ago||OK...||
and how does understanding the offense better going to help Sheridan when he still can't throw or run? Review those game tapes from last year...the only times his passes looked good were when he forgot what color jersey his receivers were wearing. He will not be "competent" this year or ever.
|5 years 50 weeks ago||Why do you think...||
Sheridan will be "competent" after having being God awful last year? He clearly has mimimal talent, particularly running the ball, and even last year his forte' was supposed to be his understanding of the offense. Another year of knowing the system will not make up for his lack of ability. He's simply too slow and has too weak of an arm to ever be truly effective. I am a true believer in the argument that Sheridan on the field at any point this year means we're in big trouble.
With D-Rob, at a minimum, the defense has to respect that he can break a run to the house on any given play. For that reason alone, I think he gets at least 5-7 snaps on runs from week 1. This number will increase throughout the season.

I don't think I would necessarily take any of these, but they were made in the heat of the moment and based upon my optimism for a quick turn around. I've already told him [the diehard Spartina] that it won't even matter after this year because UM will be winning 10+ games regularly from 2010 on! Will it really happen, maybe...maybe not, but you've got to believe and hope that it can!
|6 years 1 week ago||I agree...||
the NFL is built for parity whereas the NFL is not. The Twins and Marlins are the exception in MLB. A's have never been able to sustain their success and it took TB how many years and top prospects to finally be competitive? Look at the Pirates, Royals, Reds, Padres, Orioles, etc. Small market teams with mid-level to poor ownership / front offices and they can't build a winner.
I think this makes it look worse for the Lions, who have just been pathetically awful at scouting / drafting. The NFL is set up for not only parity, but also quick turnarounds, and the Lions can't achieve either. They are truly a joke.
|6 years 1 week ago||Thanks for the clarification...||
I was referring to the fact that we handed them the game on a silver platter with all the turnovers, stated another way, our play was good enough to beat them, except for the fact that we turned the ball over five times and either (a) gave them easy TD's or (b) blew our own scoring chances (particularly Grady's late fumble at the goal line).
|6 years 1 week ago||A win against ND....||
isn't a stretch...we clearly outplayed them last year and should have won, except those 5 turnovers got in the way. We will be vastly improved and they are overrated after blowing out Hawaii.

but I was already several drinks into the night. I thought it was decent, but nothing special. Little bit of an after taste, but generally pretty smooth.

If points 1-5 contain even an ounce of truth, then Boren should feel damn lucky none of this was made public by the coaching staff. This was clearly an addition by subtraction and I can't wait to see Martin and Big Will bitch smack him this November!
|6 years 2 weeks ago||The dynamics of a season are fluid...||
Today, I would take 11-1 with the only loss being to OSU, if offered. On the other hand, beating OSU would save / make a season if you are sitting at 3-8 going into the game. Ask again in Nov.
|6 years 2 weeks ago||The Henne comnparison...||
is not exactly the same, as he had a veteran offensive line and Braylon to throw to, as well as a good D, so there was not as much pressure on him to "carry the load." Henne also performed much higher than anyone predicted, which again was aided by those around him, particularly Braylon. On the other hand, Tate / Denard can and will do a lot of damage with their feet, and the system should also help them keep the mistakes down.
I am extremely optimistic for 7-8 win year, but don't expect to see us in the Rose Bowl, a la '04.
|6 years 2 weeks ago||Those who feel "unloved"...||
are those that can't hack the work and/or refuse to buy into the program. Borin = fat and lazy and upset his little bro' didn't get an offer. Wermers sounds like he realized he was a Carr recruit (who never actually played under Carr)that would not excel (i.e. never start) in Rich Rod's system. I'm happy he saw the writing on the wall and transferred early in his career, but obviously have issues with taking cheap shots on the way out. I don't think we'll be seeing much more of this as Rich Rod brings in his own guys.
|6 years 2 weeks ago||My pecking order...||
1) OSU - time honored hatred / respect between the perennial top two programs in the Big Ten. Rude, obnoxious fans, cheating shady coach in a sweater vest. It still amazes me that nothing ever came of the whole Clarett fiasco and allegations. Even more reason to hate them. Always cheer against them, no matter who they play.
2) ND - this is largely based on the arrogance of the ND fan base who think the school and program are holier than tho and "entitled" to greatness. I also hate Carlie Tuna, also in large part due to his arrogance, and the watered-down schedule that they play. I was in South Bend when UM rolled them in 2006 and never saw so many grown men cry in one single afternoon. I come from an Irish-Catholic family with cousins who are alumni, and I hate when I have to face them at Christmas after a Michigan loss! Again, root against them no matter who they play.
3) MSU - no real hatred here other than the fan base, who see us as their #1 rival and refuse to realize we don't view them the same. Agree with earlier posts that this match up is intensified due to proximity, but Sparty hasn't been on our level for quite some time. If the school was located in Indiana or Ohio, probably wouldn't even care. Root for Sparty against OSU and ND.

Not to mention it's not in an ideal entertainment district. They can build behind the Fox and then you can actually walk around after the games to different bars not named Cobo Joe's or the Post.
Also, while the Wings currently enjoy the benefits of a discount by players, this will certainly diminsh when other teams offer state of the art facilities.

|6 years 12 weeks ago||4 WR on field = 8 for two deep....||
RR's spread has 4 WR / slots on the field, so it takes 8 just to make the two deep. He has repeatedly said he wants 12 on scholarship to fulfill this. All of these guys aren't going to be 4* or 5* guys, so some have to come from the 3* mold.
Keep in mind that Mike Hart, a 3*, was by many considered a "throw in" or "project" behind 4* "immediate impact player" Max Martin. We all know how that one turned out.
I'm not trying to say that Dielo = Mike Hart, but just don't have a heart attack b/c we have a couple of 3* or "project" players.
|6 years 14 weeks ago||Tate doesn't sound razzled....||
by the Dukie who hasn't played in four years. Even assuming Paulus comes, there is no realistic chance that he sees the field absent an injury to Tate, and probably Robinson.
You haven't heard Tate say a negative word about Gardner, who is more likely to challenge Tate's junior and senior year playing time, similar to Pryor and Beckham. Tate has the mentality that we need, that he will beat out the competition and lead us to the promised land!
|6 years 14 weeks ago||The Buckeye sees it right....||
I think El Caballo de Sangre broke it down pretty well in his blog today:
Tate / Robinson are 1a and 1b
Paulus is probably a better #3 / emergency QB than Sheridan (i.e., death ).
I don't have any problem with Paulus coming for these reasons. He likely won't beat out Tate or Robinson, and if he does, then he gives us our best option to win. I don't give to squirts of pi$$ about the media or UM bashers that are laughing at this move or calling it "desperate." RR is building a dynasty, and we will be the ones laughing in the end.
