That's all true, but I'm not sure if any of Beilein's recruits would have gone to MSU if Michigan was still terrible. I'm guessing maybe Walton, but that's about it. Irvin isn't really Izzo's kinda player. GRIII would have been just as likely to go to an Indiana school once he exploded on the scene. McGary would've gone to Duke. All the other guys are outside of midwest or not big enough recruits for Izzo (or previously for Izzo).

What's interesting too is that Beilein has never won a head-to-head recruiting battle against Izzo (although there's probably a few Izzo wishes he lost), so their decline in recruiting is mostly independent of Michigan's success.

A make-up call would have been if he gently backed Morgan up and got called for the charge.

Scherzer is a smart guy that almost certainly understands the risks to a certain degree. He also knows how he's pitching going into the year and how healthy he currently is.
IMO, these are his odds:

Average season plagued by minor injuries: 20%. $90 million contract.
Major, but not career ending injury: 8%. $20 million.

Expected earnings = $163 million, "median" earnings is $200 million. Not shocking that he turned down $140 million, especially when he's already made $30+ million and (probably) doesn't really need the money - he can afford to take the risk.

|20 weeks 2 days ago||The 12th game and instant||
The 12th game and instant replay have both severely damaged the quality of the game, at least from a spectators perspective.
The 12th game in itself is not a bad thing, but when every single major program used it to add a cupcake home game to pad their balance sheet, it's severely diluted the non conference schedule.
Instant replay is 10-20 minutes of complete boredom added to each game in an effort to make the game marginally more fair. I know fans in every sport seem to think not having instant replay is backwards, but it cannot be implemented in football without hurting the quality of the game.
I would guess those 2 changes explain 25% of the decline in student attendance. The rest can probably be explained by cultural factors - kids growing up on cell phones, computers and not into athletics quite as much.

|30 weeks 2 days ago||The problem I have with this||
The problem I have with this analysis is that if you put Gardner on a team like Iowa State, his value drops to probably 5 digits. A lot of his value is due to playing for Michigan. Another QB of similar talents - say Kain Colter - would generate a similar amount of value to Michigan, even though he's not generating a ton for NU (due to NU's weaker brand).
That's not to say that their argument has no merit, a player like Manziel is delivering tons of value to A&M, but the analysis does not come close to accurately calculating Gardner's market value as a college football player.
I also strongly dispute Duderstadt's assertion that the AD does not deliver value back to the University. The AD is the University's biggest marketing tool. It is easily worth 8 figures to the U.

I'd be interested how much of Michigan's marketing is directed at non-revenue sports vs Football, Basketball and Hockey. You go around town, and most of the ads you see are for Gymnastics, Woman's Basketball and other non-revenue sports. Michigan Stadiums big screens are mostly used to promote non-revenue sports.
My point is, Bacon, Martin and Duderstadt are missing the point regarding marketing. Brandon knows that UM football promotes itself. OTOH, other sports need help, and he's clearly spending money on the non-revenue sports that can attract fans - soccer, gymnastics, woman's basketball.
Martin's comments are especially telling. He didn't ask for a salary, but what Michigan got was an AD that was ambivalent and treated the job like a hobby. Brandon may be a self promoting arrogant ass, but he does care about the program and is heavily involved, and I think has done a very good job, minus some legitimate gripes.

Remember, poor student attendance is more of a reflection of the quality of the game over the past 5-10 years and not just its present state. CFB is now paying the price for mistakes made over the past decade and the trend will only eventually reverse if they make positive improvements to make the game more attractive to adolescent spectators.

One observation not mentioned yet: Burke takes way too many plays off on defense. Partly, this is a result of him dominating the ball on offense, partly it's the coaches leaving him in for too long, and partly it's just on him not giving the effort he should.
THJr is always going to be a bad on-the-ball defender. This really rears it's head when he's going up against a guy like Olidipo (sic). He's fine against outside shooters, I think.
Stauskas could become a decent defender in a couple years, but it's not going to happen this year.

One trend I'm not a big fan of either is the pour over brews. Sometimes it's maybe marginally better, but it takes longer, costs more and your coffee is never as hot as out of a drip machine. Aren't the physics of it the same as a drip brew anyway?

I have no doubts that Gardner is listed as the #2 QB. I do have doubts whether he'll be the first QB off the bench if Denard is injured. What coaches say is often different than what they do, especially with Michigan's coaches.
Besides, Gardner has struggled at QB almost every time he's seen action. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Bellomy is giving him a serious challenge at the position.

The voters also love cumulative stats, which was a big reason why Morneau won the award in 2006. Looking at advanced metrics, it's clearly Trout, but voters don't, so Cabrera's still very much in it, although Trout still has a slight advantage due to his SB number and position.

The lunatic fringe of any fanbase is going to have the loudest voice on the internet. Plenty of their fans get it. Their football program that they've devoted a lot of time, energy and money in has just had its reputation destroyed and now has little chance of success for at least a decade. Penn State deserved it, but I'd still take it easy on their fans and alumni.

Feel bad for the Big Ten too. Our conference is taking a major hit regardless of whether they get booted. Both options are devastating to the Big Ten. Option 1) you keep a bunch of child rapist enablers in the Big Ten and the integrity of the conference is trashed. Option 2) you lose a crap load of money, and any shot at being a major player in future expansion talks (say goodbye to any shot at ND).

I'm not sure how the Big Ten Presidents can read this and conclude that PSU should be allowed to stay in the conference. They will take a $$$ hit, but the Big Ten's entire brand will be trashed if PSU is allowed to stay. How can we go about touting the "integrity" of the conference and our academic credentials with Penn State around?
Penn State's is now lower than Bob Jones University in the public's eye. Why should we have to live with a school like that in our conference?

Devin should be a fulltime WR. It's likely his best position -- he has the potential to be a first rounder as a WR. Bellomy looks like he'll be at worst a servicable QB that can execute the offense. We have little talent at wide receiver.
The chance of Denard and Bellomy getting hurt and Devin getting hurt at receiver is relatively low, while the potential benefits of playing Devin at receiver are so high that it would be foolish not to play him at receiver full time.

I think you are right that Brian's analysis is flawed (Which I'm sure he'd admit), but both Michigan and Bama would kill the $9.4 million number in both their home games. Michigan also is not filling their schedule with a comparable game in 2013, so there is an opportunity there that lowers the 9.4 baseline a bit.

Right, so the number they are shooting for is around $9.4 million each game, not $4.7. It's more complicated than that -- there's opportunity costs, etc, but the number ia certainly higher than $4.7.

I doubt Minnesota gets ranked up there, even if they'll likely end up being a top 25 team. They're off too many people's radars. Going to be another great year next year for the Big Ten. Hopefully with a bit more tourney success, especially for Michigan.

Agreed. Maybe I have a cynical view of student athletes, but top end college basketball players are essentially majoring in basketball. If he wants to move with his career, then I cannot knock his decision. What he mostly gains by coming back is guarenteed playing time. Qdoba is good too. Very similar to Chipolte.

Why kill their program and then shackle yourself to the corpse? Just let them rot somewhere else.

From the first google result in my quick search:
"THE ACTUAL RULE from the rule book
A FAIR BALL is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base, or that touches first, second or third base, or that first falls on fair territory on or beyond first base or third base, or that, while on or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player, or that, while over fair territory, passes out of the playing field in flight.
A fair fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is on fair or foul territory at the time he touches the ball. If a fly ball lands in the infield between home and first base, or home and third base, and then bounces to foul territory without touching a player or umpire and before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball; or if the ball settles on foul territory or is touched by a player on foul territory, it is a foul ball. If a fly ball lands on or beyond first or third base and then bounces to foul territory, it is a fair hit."

Additionally, when players do come out saying that they received cash handshakes, the school can easily defend itself by saying there's no proof, and the player just has a bone to pick with the university.
I'm not trying to make a "everyone's doing it" argument. My point is that there's very little the NCAA can do to stop cash handshakes, so we shouldn't be surprised if it's happening everywhere. Because it's so hard to catch anyone, it is essential that the NCAA comes down hard whenever a school gets caught attempting to pay a player or recruit. Unfortunately, their idiotic handling of Cam Newton is only going to make matters about 100 times worse.
