6 years 6 weeks ago Camps

I would imagine that Shane's hype last year was due to his outstanding performance at camps, and that his relatively less impressive high school numbers (1684 yards, 51.5% completion, 19-7 TD/INT) have depressed his ranking just a little. He's still very highly regarded, and I would imagine will jump back up a few spots when he throws at camps again this year.

6 years 7 weeks ago What about a panel?

It's difficult for any one person not to miss a player or two when trying to cover all Michigan sports since 2005. Why not have a panel made up of Brian and maybe 4 other respected MGoBloggers? I would suggest someone with football knowledge (Magnus?) and perhaps Mathlete to look at things more statistically.

6 years 7 weeks ago Agreed

I think that those of us who have followed the blog without posting unless they had relevent new information should have a vote as well.

6 years 25 weeks ago I can't speak for this year

because I've been in the student section all year, but I've been going to at least a few games a year for about the last ten, and the "I" section IS noticeably quieter than the others, even from non-student section seats (I've sat all over the stadium and it always seemed quieter no matter my seat)

8 years 11 weeks ago To be honest

To be honest, he didn't seem that sure of his supposed stance, it may have simply been the ESPN's view. ESPN classified Michigan as a signing day "loser" but Herbstreet spent almost the entire time talking about how he doesn't put much stock in stars and how Rich Rod didn't necessarily pull great recruiting classes at WVU but instead turned guys like Slaton into stars.

Also, classifying Michigan a signing day loser seems odd since it's the same day they signed ESPN's 12th ranked overall player.

8 years 18 weeks ago No way

Suh is labeled as a can't miss guy, but until he actually proves it in the NFL, nobody "can't miss". Take for instance, Reggie Bush, who was pretty much anointed a HOF'er before even setting foot in the NFL. Now let's say a team were to trade an established WR, a 2 or 3 year former high draft pick that has actually fulfilled some of his massive potential, say, oh I don't know, Larry Fitzgerald?

Keep in mind, in 2006, Larry Fitzgerald was very good, and had fulfilled some of that potential, but had yet to break out, so he would probably have brought back even less than Calvin would now. How would trading Fitz and their first rounder in 2006 for Bush and a first rounder have worked out? Would they have made it to the superbowl last year? Probably not.

Now, I realize that this scenario will not always happen, but it's not usually a good idea to trade established stars for guys that might be stars, and throw in our first rounder to boot.

8 years 24 weeks ago Ricardo Miller

In regards to Ricardo being open a lot, yes he is, however, there are always going to be times when the WR is open but the QB doesn't get him the ball, especially at the high school level. Of course Ricardo's QB isn't perfect, but it's not like every other high school WR is playing with Peyton Manning either.

The main point of my post was to point out that Ricardo seems prone to drops, as I've seen him play 4 to 5 times now, and have come away underwhelmed because he has dropped multiple passes in most of the games I've seen.

8 years 24 weeks ago Ricardo Miller

Regarding Ricardo Miller, I was there at the game, and honestly, I don't think it was a "big game for Ricardo, especially considering the inaccuracy of his QB" Ricardo was overthrown on a long ball once, and there was a poorly thrown screen that would have gone for no gain anyways, but honestly, Ricardo should have had much more if it hadn't been for drops.

Ricardo dropped a sure touchdown when Bedford had a breakdown in coverage on 3rd and 15, the corner tried to pass him off to the deep safety, who hadn't dropped nearly deep enough and let Ricardo behind the both of them. It looked eerily similar to the Iowa game and our safety play there. The QB hit Ricardo in his hands and he dropped it. Ricardo also had another drop on a 3rd down screen that likely would have resulted in a first down.

Overall, it looks like Ricardo is able to beat HS coverage simply due to pure physical ability, however, he doesn't strike me as athletic enough to pull that off often enough at the college level to make up for his tendency for drops, a la Braylon.

Of course, I'm no scout, so take what I've said with a grain of salt, but to me, Ricardo seems to deserve his three star ranking. He might be a contributor at the college level, but unless he fixes the drops he's not ready to be a star yet.

8 years 29 weeks ago Stanky legg

Actually, they did play the stanky legg during pre game. I thought it was pretty cool that they actually played the song request from Woolfolk.

8 years 31 weeks ago Occam's razor

The simplest explanation is usually the correct one. If the foot looks out of bounds, it likely is.

8 years 32 weeks ago I was sitting in the student section

I'm currently a senior at AA Pioneer

8 years 32 weeks ago Yeah

Yeah, I meant for this to be much briefer than it was. I might make it a diary next time.

8 years 32 weeks ago One potential problem

Is that two recruits with the exact same offers, say Michigan, Illinois, Tulsa and ole Miss would have completely different grades if one commuted to M and the other to Tulsa. Same offers, but one will likely be a mid 3 star an the other maybe a 4 stat. Admittedly, I don't have the solution to his problem, just thought I'd point it out.

8 years 33 weeks ago Ricardo Miller

I'll post this here since I don't have enough points to start a board topic and not enough info to make it a worthy diary. Ricardo Miller caught two TD passes in Ann Arbor Pioneer's 45-0 win against Dexter. He also had a third TD called back for an illegal forward pass. Ricardo got open pretty much all day, although Pioneer's quarterback badly overthrew him once for a pick and badly underthre him for another one. The first TD was a short out route that Ricardo turned up field and turned into a long touchdown due to shoddy arm tackling by Dexter. The second was just a deep throw on 4th down where Ricardo was simply bigger and faster than the coverage and it behind both defenders covering him. For anyone who saw the NC State game it was very similar to the dropped TD with 3 minutes left in he 4th. Except Ricardo caught it. It should be noted that Dexter us bad, even for a MI high school football team.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled program.

8 years 33 weeks ago UFR ratings

Maybe we could find an "average" game for each position and make the final UFR rating % of that game? For example, if the average game for a DE is +3 and Graham gets a +6 he gets a rating of 200%. That might make it easier to compare players across positions.

8 years 34 weeks ago Pioneer players

Just in case anybody was wondering, small non miller WR is # 5 Brandis Yarrington, he is about a mac level recruit. As for how Jeron Clayton looked, well he has mono and did not play. I actually thought Miller dropped two catchable balls today, both in the first half. After the second one he went to go see the trainer. It appeared to be a minor injury since he came back a few plays later.

9 years 7 weeks ago Cutler

Cutler would be well worth a 2nd and a 3rd rounder, Hell, at the current market price (2nd rounder for Cassel), that late first and a 2nd rounder seems to be an offer that might have a chance, and would be well worth it for the Lions, it would allow them to take either Jason Smith OT, or Aaron Curry LB at the top of the draft.

9 years 9 weeks ago McLane

The guy from the Diehard movies. Played by Bruce Willis.

Unless my sarcasm detector is off, in which case, my previous statement is retracted.

9 years 9 weeks ago As far as competition goes

I have my doubts that's the reason Threet would transfer. Keep in mind that when he transferred here he was 3rd on the depth chart behind Henne and Mallet. And Mallet was supposed to be the QB for the next 3-4 years after Henne graduated. If playing time was the issue I don't see why he would transfer from a place where he was the back up and competing to start (GT) to a place where he would be 3rd string and behind a highly touted 5 star for conceivably his entire college career (Mich).

9 years 9 weeks ago Channel 4 news

So I live in Ann Arbor and happened to be watching when this segment came up. I believe the wording was that Steven Threet MAY transfer and that at this point it was not confirmed. So while the writing appears to be on the wall this is by no means an official confirmation.

9 years 14 weeks ago Passing Efficiency

Leading the Big Ten in passing efficiency is not an accurate indicator of his passing ability if he throws about 10 passes a game. If that were the case Pat White would be one of the top 10 passers in the nation. While I agree Pryor is not Sheridan, to say that he's a good passer because he managed not to throw INTs in his 10 pass attempts per game is a poor arguement.

9 years 27 weeks ago Illinois game.

I agree with you in that I believe the coaching staff should pass the ball mroe on early downs, however, it seems to me that you skim over the Illinois game, in which our offense was terrific for the first 2-3 drives, and then bogged down until way too late in the 4th. I'd be interested to see if our playcalling on our scoring drives during that game were different than on our other drives that game.

9 years 27 weeks ago Prove your points.

I'm sorry, but whether or not you can correctly spell "douche" has very little to do with whether or not Brandon Herron is a fantastic LB. Which he is not, he may be a great kid, a great person and definitely plays football better than I do, but a terrific college LB he is not. Do you read this blog at all? If you do, you would realize that LB is one of the weaknesses of our team.

If you can prove me wrong, I will gladly eat crow, but I'm pretty sure you'll find that the majority of football fans will agree with me on that point at the least.

9 years 27 weeks ago Sarcasm?

Now first of all, I agree with all of you that IF he's serious, it's ridiculous to be calling for a coach's head within half a season. But come on, after the first paragraph...there's no way this isn't sarcasm right?
