Well I like it. I thought it was a funny premise at first, just 11 minutes of opening credits to that horrible theme song (IT TAKES A LOT TO MAKE A STEW), but then things took a turn toward great right about the time Smarf showed up. And then there's the Lars von Trier cameo.
I've watched it a few times now trying to spot machete guy's first appearance. I think I spotted him juuust on the right edge of the screen during the bicep curl kid's shot at 0:19 (look at the pattern/color of whatever is over there by the golf clubs). But if he's not there then he's DEFINITELY lurking right behind the homework girl who appears right after bicep curl boy.
You gotta watch it without those subtitles though. They get in the way during at least one machete man appearance.
I guess not everyone's cup o' tea around here though. Too bad.

I think Navarre's senior year was very successful. It was his preceding difficult years that sort of led us to expect another frustrating season in 2003, but he consistently defied those expectations. Perhaps the biggest improvement he made that year was in gaining the composure to take a step up in the pocket to avoid a sack and then fire accurately downfield.
That seemed to be a common recurring event in the 03 season. "Oh shi- that defensive end is bearing down HARD. Navarre is way too slow to avoid this inevitable sack." [Navarre steps up, just out of reach and fires to Avant. First Down!]

The relevant quote is at about 0:29. It sounds like he was misquoted. Instead of hearing him say "I knew something happened again," I'm hearing the phrase "I knew we did something right." It's hard to tell, though, because Perry is half-laughing as he speaks and is obviously still exasperated following the game.
I still think The Happening is a good nickname (can he have another one in addition to shoelace?), but I thought I'd just point out that it appears that the above quote is apocryphal.

|5 years 14 weeks ago||First of all, I don't buy||
First of all, I don't buy your assertion that in order to make it "fair" we need a 4 week playoff. Fairness is subjective, so to suggest that 8 teams is unfair, but 12 or 16 is the threshold at which the system magically achieves "fairness" is disingenuous. In my opinion, fairness is proportional to the number of teams with a shot at the crown. That is, 4 is better than 2, and 8 is better than 4.
As you point out, you soon run into a problem, because as the system becomes more fair (by my definition), the season gets more drawn out, opening the players up to injury risk and academic difficulties. I would argue that this longer season is acceptable, however. Especially with an 8 team playoff. Four of those teams will bow out in round one, so their season will be as long as it would in the bowl system. Two teams will add one more game, and the other two will add two more games. So that's 4 teams out of more than one hundred who will be playing extra games. Surely the NCAA could work out a postseason schedule that is accommodating to the athletes' academics and well-being. Also consider that, while two teams in the whole NCAA will play at max 16 games, all 32 NFL squads play 16 games every season, and their players are considerably older and more injury prone.
Logistically, I don't have enough knowledge to speculate on how the NCAA or SEC or B10 whoever would attack the problem. Surely there is a solution that would satisfy all the major players. To throw your hands up and declare it futile is quite defeatist. That's not how problems get solved, and, IMO, the BCS is a damn big problem.
|5 years 14 weeks ago||So what terminology is used||
So what terminology is used if a DT or NT is to line up heads up on the Center?
|5 years 15 weeks ago||I respectfully disagree. You||
I respectfully disagree. You most certainly can teach a team to focus on the turnover battle, but you just do it in terms that are not as vague as "focus on winning the turnover battle." You teach Tate not to run around the pocket with the ball out away from his body, the O-line how to give your QB another split second of protection, your QBs their progressions and how to read the opposing defense before and after the snap of the ball. You can teach your defense to scratch and tug and poke at the football every time it's within arm's reach.
Turnovers are definitely coachable, IMO. I'm admittedly speculating, but I'd wager that turnovers weren't of the highest priority for the last couple of years because the staff was too busy trying to teach new systems to our defenses and QBs.
|5 years 15 weeks ago||Hinton simply knows that this||
Hinton simply knows that this team has a chip on its shoulder, so he figures if he rattles their cage like many other football prognosticators, they're gonna come out and feast on the flesh of all opposing teams.
So I interpret this "prediction" as a mere wink at the Michigan football team. Surely Hinton placed numerous bets on at least 9 Michigan wins, and this is his way of providing extra motivation.
|5 years 15 weeks ago||I dunno. Brandon seems to be||
I dunno. Brandon seems to be very shrewd. I think he is aware of what kind of turmoil it would throw our program into for the next several years if we change coaches yet again. Considering the level of talent that this team will have returning for 2011, in addition to RR's quality recruiting during two losing seasons, I think DB will err on the side of leniency if he has to make a choice regarding the head coaching job in the next offseason.
Assuming the team stays relatively healthy and there are no major distractions off the field, I think RichRod is definitely safe so long as he reaches a bowl game.

|5 years 16 weeks ago||If the venue favors one side||
If the venue favors one side of the championship game, then that defeats the purpose of having a championship game.
As for not winning/playing in a Natl Championship in the last ten years, OSU won it in 2002 and has played in it twice since. Yes, it's OSU so hatehatehate and all that, but they count as a Big Ten team. We've got some time before we have to worry about a Big Ten national championship drought. I'm more concerned with Michigan getting back there in the next several years.
I hope the B10 does the right thing and chooses an outdoor venue for the championship game. It just wouldn't be a Big Ten championship if it wasn't decided in inclement weather. The game is already gonna feel sterile and corporate enough with all of the advertisements that are sure to be plastered all over ("Rotel & Velveeta present The Rotel and Velveeta Big Ten Championship Game, brought to you by Rotel & Velveeta! now a word from our sponsors, Rotel & Velveeta"), not to mention the likelihood that it will be held at a soulless NFL stadium, but please let's not make it worse by playing it indoors.

MSU won't even be allowed my table scraps if I have anything to do with it.
Take that, video game simulacrum of my hated rival!
|5 years 18 weeks ago||Yeah, the key is to not||
Yeah, the key is to not overextend yourself. Stay in your pipeline, only go after guys who have you in their top 3 (top 5 max, unless it's a lowly 3 star or below), and only offer guys who have you ranked no. 1 on their list. When you're ranked no. 1, there's a chance you might get an instant commit upon offering.
I like to keep my list of targets at 12, which has brought me great success. Feel free to go higher, but don't overdo it. 15 is a good base number, because it allows you to pump 40 minutes into each recruit per week. After a couple weeks, you'll have a good idea who needs more/less time to keep you in the lead, so start shifting your minutes to the guys who have multiple offers or the ones who have dropped you in their leaderboard.
Take this all with a grain of salt, as I've only been recruiting on Varsity. It's going well, though, so I think I'll step it up to AA in my next season.
