I'VE HAD JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF YOU SONNY
|5 days 10 hours ago||Just to be clear||
My original post was pointing out the threshold one has to pass to actually get a rise out of me—the anonymity thing was a side note about how I deal with the rest. If I actually took the stuff on here personally, I would've quit in the first month.
|5 days 10 hours ago||Oh, IT'S ON|
|5 days 10 hours ago||Absolutely—I totally||
Absolutely—I totally understand why people don't put their real names on here, and that the freedom provided by anonymity cuts both ways (allowing several genuine contributors to post while working other jobs, namely).
That doesn't change the fact that, if a person hiding behind anonymity starts saying things on here that they wouldn't say to my face—and I've never been insulted in person like I have been on here—that I have very little reason to respect their opinion, and a whole lot of reason to want them off the site. I welcome intelligent discourse from any source if it's reasonable and avoids personal attacks; I have no idea who Space Coyote really is, for instance, and I have a great respect for what he brings to the discussion.
|5 days 10 hours ago||As one of the writers in||
As one of the writers in question, here are the two comments I've taken personally.
1. A guy who'd repeatedly called for my firing posting a comment referencing my mother in the most despicable, offensive way possible. I banned him with pleasure.
2. A poster trying to accuse me of plagiarism without actually coming out and saying it. I defended myself in the comments and didn't ban the guy.
That's it, and if you've read the comments/boards enough you know that there's plenty more out there that I could take personally. I think the writers here have plenty thick skin and take solace in the fact that we're actually willing to attach our names/reputations to what we write, in stark contast to the commenters.
|2 weeks 9 hours ago||If you're going to be so||
If you're going to be so intentionally dense, I'd recommend not doing it to somebody with admin powers. Like I said before, there was no need to leave that comment—how hard is it to just not read a post and move on with your life? It literally takes doing nothing. This shouldn't be difficult.
This one's a freebie, since if I blocked/Bolivian'd everyone who's been a buffoon this week, we'd start running out of active posters; I understand that people are generally pissed off right now. Next time, though, I might not feel so forgiving.
|2 weeks 10 hours ago||Do you think that 11W should||
Do you think that 11W should let me do a weekly Q&A over there? Because I do, in case you hadn't noticed, and it's actually pretty popular—us homers, when we acknowledge our allegiances, can still be quite objective. I mean, Ross' prediction gives Michigan more of a chance than most Wolverine fans do at this point.
Also, you can always skip over a post that a lot of other people clearly enjoy. This comment is pretty unnecessary and, considering Ross has a full-time job that isn't blogging and did this simply as a favor, quite ungrateful given the quality of the analysis.
[EDIT: I tried as long as I could. This thread no longer makes sense because a certain poster refused to stop posting about a post he didn't even want to read. This was not a reply to Gandalf, but a post that should no longer appear here.]
|2 weeks 10 hours ago||Yes, there will be a||
Yes, there will be a corresponding Q&A up at 11W tomorrow; I'll be sure to post a link, as I have another Q&A with 11W's Johnny Ginter that'll go up here tomorrow. (I'm also the guest on 11W's Dubcast, which will be posted at 4:15 today, for those of you who are interested.)

The earlier games went long, so the Michigan game will come on as shortly after FSU/Northeastern is over. Best guess right now is between 7:15 and 7:30 EST for tipoff.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||There's a laughable rumor||
There's a laughable rumor on The Site With Zero Credibility by That "Insider" suggesting that Michigan will pursue John—not Jim—Harbaugh, the coach who won a Super Bowl last season and then inked an extension. You can give up any hope of that happening now. It'll be less painful that way.

I got a lot less nice when he tried another half-apology on Twitter, if that makes you feel any better.

I also write under the monikers Greg Dooley, Tom VanHaaren, and—to switch things up and troll—Jason Whitlock. The conspiracy deepens.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||I thought Walton did a very||
I thought Walton did a very nice job running the back end of the 1-3-1, actually. That spot requires a player who's quick enough to cover the entire width of the court, and Walton certainly fits the bill; McGary being smack in the middle of that zone makes it tough to exploit any size issue underneath. Also, Walton's displayed a knack for grabbing defensive rebounds, which is an unexpected bonus.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Cripes, man.||
The reason I said the thing about writing an FSU preview before is that I didn't have any need to look at someone else's FSU preview. The reason I said the thing about Dylan and I being friends is that I value that friendship and certainly wouldn't steal content from him; that would put quite the strain on our friendship, not to mention the fact that I'm good friends with Joe Stapleton (of UMHoops) and our assigned seats at Crisler are right next to each other.
I appreciate you admitting your error in judgment; I'd also recommend trying a little less hard to hold onto any possible point in your favor when you're clearly in the wrong here.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||It's entirely possible that||
It's entirely possible that could happen, though I'll say with certainty in this case that it didn't, since I wrote so much in the last couple days that I didn't get the chance to read what was posted on this site, let alone any other. (Tonight's job is catching up on the defensive UFR.) Also, I'd already written an FSU preview for HTTV Hoops; I didn't exactly need any help today.
I do appreciate the response; I don't appreciate the "I'm not saying, I'm just saying" tone of this post or your original post. If you see an issue like this again, a much better way to handle it would be to email me or Brian, wait for a response, and then make such a serious accusation if and only if you think it's warranted.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Thanks||
I appreciate that. Basketball/football overlap can get crazy but I do enjoy the opportunity to post this much copy about actual games.

I should have access to full game film of this one sometime over the weekend, and at that point there will be many GIFs, that one included.

|2 weeks 5 days ago||Are you accusing me of||
Are you accusing me of plagiarizing Dylan? Because Dylan and I are friends, the VCU press is both "vaunted" and called Havoc, and that's quite an accusation to drop in such a manner. We happened to write very similar sentences about a thing that happened. That's going to happen every once in a while when we write about the same topics.
EDIT: Also, I'd have to be quite the idiot/asshole to link to the post I'm "plagiarizing" in the very same post in which the offending quote appears. I'm both of these things at times, certainly, but I'd hope at this point I'd get more benefit of the doubt than that.

This official site provides this link for live audio; it isn't working yet, though hopefully that's because the game hasn't started. It's also on 950 AM (Detroit) and 1050 AM (Ann Arbor), as well as Sirius channel 85, though that'll be the FSU broadcast per the game notes.

Given that they were one of my most time-consuming posts—those take forever—and the 247 Composite basically rendered them entirely redundant, we decided before the season that they weren't worth putting together, at least not on a weekly basis. When the football/basketball overlap ends I might throw something together, and I'll definitely do a signing day update.

He's one of the "two new guys" Yost mentioned. Obviously a target at this point.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||The two Glenville prospects||
The two Glenville prospects (Marshon Lattimore and Erick Smith) keep mentioning Michigan; they're presumed Buckeye locks and definitely longshots but the Wolverines are at least in the mix. CO RB Kalen Ballage is still a possibility; the coaches have been contacting him more as of late. OK S Steven Parker keeps mentioning a potential trip to Ann Arbor, though we'll see if that materializes.
Other than the prospects mentioned above (and the three you mentioned), any additions to the class are likely to come from more late offers at this point.

|7 weeks 6 days ago||It really depends on the||
It really depends on the year. I think overall there may be more of a trend towards prospects enrolling early; at least at Michigan, however, it's been inconsistent. By year:
2013: 6 early enrollees
Anywhere from 3-7 seems typical—2011 was the transition year, obviously, so it makes sense that the number was unusually low for that class. While the recruiting process has sped up in many ways, it's still tough for a lot of prospects to graduate early—it takes a fair amount of planning and extra work, and these guys already spend a lot of their free time on football (and often other sports, too)—and many (like those at a lot of private schools) aren't allowed to by their high school.

I spent all weekend either in a car or at that game and we recorded the podcast when I'm normally beginning to compile GIFs. Nobody requested anything when I asked on Twitter. I like them this way, too, but with the normal number of GIFs it totally bogs down for people with slower connections and can even crash browsers. The lightboxes are a necessary evil for now—I get complaints every time I post more than one un-lightboxed GIF on the front page.

I'm assuming that was a graphics mistake on the TV crew's part. I can assure you that this is the film from the St. Eds-Erie McDowell game; if you have any doubts about that, click on the link to the newspaper recap from the game.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Crawford is extremely||
Crawford is extremely athletic; he's been making waves on the track for longer than he's been considered a football prospect (and he started as a sophomore at St. Eds). He's posted electronic times of 10.8 in the 100 and 21.8 in the 200 and also had a 20-foot long jump last year. That speed and explosiveness translates pretty well to the football field, as you can see on the film.

|9 weeks 6 days ago||I'm pretty sure he stated||
I'm pretty sure he stated this flat-out in a presser from fall camp, but I can't find the quote right now. Still, the prospects being considered in the 2015 class are telling—several dual-threat types are under consideration (Dillman and Sheriron Jones, most prominently) and even most of the pocket passers display a certain level of athleticism. Borges isn't going to go to the spread-and-shred or anything, but I think he's realizing more and more the value of having a QB who can create with his legs.

Working on it. When I woke up most of the original post had disappeared. When I recovered the full post, Drupal posted it twice. Should be fixed shortly.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||To clarify...||
There's no reason to worry unless you're the type to worry whenever other schools dare to continue recruiting a five-star who's committed elsewhere. There's been zero indication from Campbell that he's anything but 100% committed to Michigan; in fact, he's gone out of his way to say he won't entertain other offers.
|10 weeks 5 days ago||Thanks for the feedback.||
I'll definitely do that from now on; sometimes I forget with these posts that not everybody pores over recruiting content as much as I do.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||I'll take that into||
I'll take that into consideration, though I think the vast majority of the time I do this anyway. 95% of the time, I lead off the post with pertinent recruiting info before getting into the commit performances. This week, however, the one bit of recruiting news worth posting—one that didn't directly involve Michigan—didn't seem worth an above-the-fold header over two great games by Michigan commits. Plus, I made sure to point out in the jump teaser that there was info on JuJu Smith.
My recommendation for those who don't want to miss out on info is to simply click through. Not sure what else to say here.

According to the man himself, the article is originally from Michigan History Magazine in 1996 or 1997—so it's a reprinting of a reprinting. I won't bother to check and see if TDF riders wore leather helmets in those days because I can't possibly bring myself to care.
Long story short, Michigan Today probably should've noted that the article was, in fact, written nearly two decades ago with a couple of minor updates.

You're probably right. I still have a hard time differentiating man vs. C4 when I'm charting on the fly and don't get an overhead view. Either way, a playcall that puts a corner incapable of guarding Daniels one-on-one in a situation where he's guarding Daniels one-on-one seemed like a poor decision to me. Doing it twice seemed especially poor.

|14 weeks 1 day ago||To address the 11W stuff...||
This was the first run of a series of posts that are supposed to be full of snark—Johnny and I spent about 15 minutes going back-and-forth via chat, he had the opportunity to edit afterwards, and that made it seem a little imbalanced, I guess. I didn't mind him adding his thoughts—he makes a fair point about Gardner—especially considering that this is intended for the 11W audience much more than ours (I don't think anything I said wasn't covered either in the podcast, game recap, or Brian's game column). Johnny's already in touch with me about tweaking the format—I'll have a chance to add some responses the next time around.
I know it's a bitter rivalry and all, but I really like that both sides of it have prominent, independent blogs that do good work (yes, some of the 11W guys get very homery, but so do we, and stuff like Ross Fulton's posts have a level of insight that you just don't find elsewhere, and you all should be familiar with Ramzy's prose by now). I've enjoyed my interactions with Johnny and think it's a very good thing that we're doing some collaboration; hopefully, you'll keep reading them, and I think the posts will only get better from here. This was a first run and we're clearly working out the kinks.

Those are going to be integrated into the recruiting roundups like they were today; too many posts on the docket per week (and HS stats aren't always that valuable) for it to be its own post.
I should also mention that I'll be spending more time breaking down game film and going out to fewer high school games in order to accomodate my schedule and health. So... if anyone is in the area of a Michigan commit and is willing to bring a video camera to film a game, get in touch with me. (I'll post this again somewhere where it'll be more noticeable, too).

He was supposed to visit soon—this weekend, I'm pretty sure—and the coaches must've believed there was a chance he'd try to commit when he was on campus. They did him a favor and saved him the trip, and they didn't close the door on picking his recruitment back up later when the scholarship picture is a little more clear.

Totally agree on your last point. If Burke and MCW are both on the board for the Pistons at #8 and they go with the latter simply because he fits better with Brandon Knight—not the player I'd like to see them build/draft around—then I'll be one pissed off blogger.

Definitely seated while the game is going on. First of all, never get between a reporter and their MacBook during a game. Second, standing by the windows means you're almost certainly blocking someone's view.
A few people get up and walk around—usually to get food or use the bathroom—during commercial breaks, but usually there's just a mass run for the buffet table during halftime. Most everyone is pretty busy up there during game action.

Doubtful. There are plenty of extra seats in the top couple rows (which don't provide a great view, but there are several TVs up there). Some outlets also send four or five reporters, so if there's a serious crunch I could see the school putting limits on the number of credentials given for one sport to the same publication. Again, though, I don't think that'll be a problem any time soon with the renovations.

Given Marshall is the more explosive athlete and has a longer frame, he's a much better fit for what the coaches want—they're building a really big D-line, and Marshall could end up packing on the pounds like Frank Clark did. I'm not sure Robinson could do that and still be effective.
|30 weeks 5 days ago||I'd be pretty surprised if||
I'd be pretty surprised if Robinson got an offer. Yes, he's looked good at camps, but he's a 6'2", 230-pound defensive end. Take a look at the size of the guys Michigan currently has on the roster at DE and the prospects they're recruiting there. Frank Clark is still a WDE despite pushing 280, and at 6'2" he's the shortest DE on the team—and he's a more explosive athlete than Robinson. Taco Charlton is a 6'6", 265-pound true freshman and he'll be a WDE. Depending on how the class shakes out, Da'Shawn Hand could even end up there, and he's a high school defensive tackle.
Michigan is clearly building a massive D-line. I don't think Robinson fits that vision, even though I think he's a decent prospect.
|30 weeks 5 days ago||Brown is still a long way||
Brown is still a long way from narrowing things down (he just named a top ten a few weeks ago) and making a decision, and he hasn't visited campus, so until either of those things happen I'm having a hard time entertaining him as a serious possibility.
That said, if Brown showed interest he'd be making a decision late in the cycle—he hasn't visited several of his top schools, after all—and by that time the coaches would have a better idea of the final class numbers (and likely know the destinations of McDowell and Marshall). They could look at Brown as a potential alternative to Hand, should he go elsewhere, or if there's room for both I doubt they'd turn down any interested five-stars in this class—again, there aren't enough pressing needs for the coaches to turn down the best players available late in the game.
At this point I'd consider Brown quite a longshot, though, so this probably won't be relevant.

64 colors didn't look any better with these—think the bigger issue was the lighting at the game.

|34 weeks 2 days ago||Unless one of the programs in||
Unless one of the programs in contention has a particularly great (or terrible) season, I doubt 2013 wins and losses are going to make a huge difference in Hand's recruitment. He seems very serious about the academic side of things and how well he connects with the coaches—Bud Foster is the reason VT is on top, and Greg Mattison is developing a similarly-strong relationship with Hand—and I think those will be much bigger factors than how each team does this fall. These guys are looking at the next 4-5 years, not where the team is the year before they get on campus.

Brian is out of pocket because he's in the midst of a move, I'm attempting to write a longform piece today, and other outlets were running with the story. I'd agree that, in light of what's been revealed about Heitner, his report didn't deserve the attention it received. But it also received a ton of attention, and at least this way a more complete version of the story is on the front page for those who have come across the original report and want to know more.
But yes, it turned out Heitner isn't front-page material, and I apologize for any unnecessary consternation posting this has caused.

I'm a pretty big NBA fan. The only people I've heard say bad things about Chris Webber are Michigan fans—a certain set of Michigan fans that feels personally betrayed by the Ed Martin scandal—and I'd love to see those fans give the man a chance to prove he's grown up and moved forward since he was 18 (or, if you'd prefer, in the decade since he lied to a grand jury). There's a whole lot of positive that could come out of the Fab Five reconciling with Michigan, and the only negative I see is bitter fans who don't want to be reminded of an era that the program has obviously moved beyond.

Yes, let's forever ostracize an otherwise upstanding person who accepted a large sum of money when he was 18 years old. Pretty sure that's the only angle CBS showed—there wasn't a timeout until well after it happened, and they didn't show a replay going into or coming out of the next break. Haven't seen another angle in the highlights, either. Definitely disappointing, since I'd like a wide-angle look at it, too.

|37 weeks 5 days ago||This is not a McGary/Horford||
This is not a McGary/Horford vs. LeVert/Vogrich proposition, though. Beilein's offense is designed to have four players who can shoot from the perimeter. Playing two bigs is something he's been more open to this year, but it still bogs down what he can do offensively. In a system designed around spacing and outside shooting, having two big guys who can't shoot isn't ideal.
Meanwhile, Michigan's guards need the occasional break, too, and LeVert is one of the team's best perimeter defenders. Vogrich really isn't part of the rotation, so I'm not even sure why he's being mentioned here—the guy has maybe played 10 meaningful minutes since conference play began.

Totally agree—it's only an easier look if you have post players with a strong back-to-the-basket game. Right now:

I'm assuming three is the number they've got in mind if the class stays at a very limited number of scholarships—until the coaches get a better idea of how many roster spots they'll have come Signing Day, they've got to be very careful about how many spots they say they have open.
Keep in mind that the coaches said they'd stand pat at five offensive linemen for nearly the entire 2013 recruiting cycle, only to take a sixth when it turned out they had room in January.

I keep seeing complaints like this and I don't get it.
1. Every outlet—including us!—posts video highlights. They are not hard to find.
2. Using gifs allows people whose workplace blocks YouTube and the like to see these.
3. The gif format has its own merits—I can edit them (see: Hardaway's trollface), for one, much easier than I can with video. Also, the fact that they loop allows one to get repeated viewings of a play without having to reload a video over and over.
I'm sure there are more reasons, but I guess my main point is that if you don't like gifs, don't click on a gifs post.

There are over 11 months until Signing Day. Westphal hasn't had the chance to visit any other school more than once outside of two in-state schools (Northwestern and Illinois). He also has offers from all over the country and a good chance at picking up many more.
I'd hold off on calling him indecisive. He's one of the few guys who's even given a decision timeline.
|42 weeks 1 day ago||No idea why they'd have that||
No idea why they'd have that for Westphal—if he's got a leader, it's definitely Michigan. Often profiles on recruiting sites have outdated information, since nobody can maintain a database that keeps up with every change in every prospect's recruitment (247 is the only site that really even tries). I wouldn't ever put too much stock in the list of schools on a player's Rivals/Scout/ESPN profile.

|42 weeks 6 days ago||Of the guys I think Michigan||
Of the guys I think Michigan has a legitimate shot at, here's a quick list (I'm writing this off the top of my head, so any glaring omissions are likely exactly that):
1. Da'Shawn Hand — Top prospect in the country has M in his top five, so he's a clear choice for number one.
2. Malik McDowell — If he played against better competition in HS I think he'd have a great chance at being a five-star. As it is, he's still very close.
3. Drake Harris — Getting a top-flight wideout would be big. Getting a top-flight in-state wideout from State (and OSU, and the rest of the country...) would be bigger.
4. Jabrill Peppers and/or Adoree' Jackson — I'm cheating here, but grabbing an elite corner would be great, and both of these guys have expressed legitimate interest. Still just an outside shot for both, IMO.
5. Damian Prince — Ditto for this five-star OL.
6. Mason Cole — Top-100 offensive lineman who Michigan may very well lead for.
7. Alex Bars — Ditto.
8. Tyler Luatua — I'd love to see Michigan continue to stockpile talent at TE, and he's the best in the country.
9. Parrker Westphal — Getting him would ease a lot of the hurt from losing Damon Webb to OSU (Webb would be high up on this list, but he seems firm in his commitment).
10. Artavis Scott — Cole's HS teammate is a hell of an athlete at WR and they could be a package deal.
I'm sure I left out several worthy candidates, but that's a rough list. All of the above guys have at least mentioned Michigan as being in contention. Of the above, they've got the best shot at landing McDowell, Cole, Westphal, Bars, and Scott, IMO.

Want to know why Kentucky's freshmen were better at rebounding and defense? Kentucky's effective height last year was #12 in the country, per KenPom. Michigan's is almost exactly average at #150.
Also, Kentucky had an Anthony Davis. Michigan does not have an Anthony Davis, and that has nothing whatsoever to do with effort.

The trouble here is minutes—you can ask a guard to go 35+ for a game, but a big man needs to catch a breather more frequently. Michigan is going to need more minutes out of Morgan's replacements than State will from Trice's. Also, while Bielfeldt held his own for stretches at center against Wisconsin, State's two bigs make it unlikely that Beilein will be able to get away with that look for long.
The other trouble here is you believing that Blake McLimans, who hasn't played a meaningful minute all season, is a viable option to play.
