You Fail to mention that for the lack of a measly 5 grand & a contract offer, RR could have brought his Def Coord. with him. Compare that to the salaries & other arrangements for the current staff. Hoke has been given the Red Carpet treatment while his predecessor had one roadblock after another strewn in his path. Bah Humbug to you Sir !

Obviously not the first time they were not actually paying attention to what was happening in front of them but just winging it from some pre-production script.

Michigan would not give RR another measley 5 grand to bring his DC with him nor offer the guy an actual contrct compared to the Red Carpet treatment afforded to Hoke who had Denard's Jr & Sr season too boot. Apply the same standard ro measure the product on the field as before to realize this is not the guy you thought he was.

Dave Brandon's judgement in firing RR was both narrow minded & short sighted.

But I should have made clear that the play in question was sort of a tweener block/deflection that directly put the ball in the hands of the other team as they they headed the other way up the court as the announcers were affirming still not a turnover. Perhaps worth a separate column but still on the Change of Possession side of the ledger.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||Statistically speaking . . .||
I will leave the conversation to those who are well versed in such matters. However there was a point in the game where the announcers said Michigan had not committed any turnovers just as a shot was blocked. For them this did not count as a turnover and they said as much.
I may be rather simple minded but anything that results in a change of possession belongs in the same column whether you call it a block, deflection or steal, regardless.

While I only listened to the game on the radio it was not hard to miss how easily the shots were falling. The TV showed Denard seated on the sidelines hunched over doing something rather unusual, tying his shoes or so I thought. Prior to this there were several moments during the game where slippage was causing problems for us. Just an observation.

As far as the tie-breaker goes, even though its right there in black & white, explained, underlined and emphasized, I am not sure exactly what the future portends should Michigan Win out, and believe me that's saying a lot, a whole lot.
But this I do know, should that eventuality come to pass & Michigan is not in the final Championship game, which would also mean finishing the regular season with but a single loss, my wildest expectations will have been surpassed by a mile.
Not only that but a very real possibility of having a higher BCS ranking than the losing team of that game.

Today was just a hint of things to come. Positioning will be keen from here on out. Cagey but cautious has been the the template up til now. Appetizers are over, its time to show who has the goods. The peloton set a high pace but which teams can do the same at the bottom of the climbs to come that will create the selection necessary to give us the fireworks we have been waiting 2 weeks to see ? Tomorrow's profile does not look too challenging unless there is an early surge that gets pressed to the finish. Thursday's Massive stage looms large. Will Friday's L'Alpe d'Huez prove pivotal ? Will the penultimate Time Trial consolidate the gains of the previous 3 days results or be a last gasp for those still grasping at straws ? Will Andy work for Frank ? Will Cadel make the others initiate ? Will Alberto come alive ? We won't have to wait much longer to find out.

Even when I reread my post it seems a little confused.
My feeling about this as an interested but clearly outside observer is that there was an internal schism when Bill Martin became AD. My inference should have done a better job of identifying those in charge of the bureaucracy within the department as the culprits for this. I think Bill Martin accomplished what was most needed both fiscally and facilities wise. RR was his decision so those who never liked it were also reacting against Bill Martin who only intended to occupy his position as a temporary assignment still left sooner than was publicly anticipated.

I have long felt that there were more than just one schism inside of the Michigan football department, team, family.
Michigan had its Man as head coach when Lloyd Carr announced his departure.
Never has any coach left this program in the Lurch in such a fashion.
There must have been some still undisclosed undercurrents at work for such an exit to even have been palatable for such a principled man.
As AD Ed Martin rehabilitated the fiscal responsibility and infrastucture for Michigan athletics to prosper into the future. It is telling however that those who had been ensconced in their positions within the department prior to his arrival are no longer on the scene.

I have an Open Question & would like anyone who can provide some perspective on these matters to chime in.
I have heard some analysis regarding how many times Michigan and the team to the South have met for All the Marbles in the past. Then using this information projecting the likelihood of this happening under the new arrangement.
What perplexes me is can the Conference standings of the past (unified) simulate the bicameral nature of who will go to the Championship game in the future.
While I applaud leaving The Game in its usual (mandatory) placement isn't it more likely that when the final Saturday of the regular season arrives the team which needs to win in order to advance to the Championship match up will also saddle the opposition with a loss that may cost them the chance to be the representative of the other Division.
In other words, isn't a second meeting nearly negated except in a confluence of exceptional circumstances ?
Then this also brings to mind that Michigan will be challenged by a greater strength of schedule in Conference than the rest of their Division, meeting them on an annual basis while the others will only play them 4 out of every 10 years on average, barring any future expansion.
I am All in for Michigan and genuinely believe they will Rise to any Occasion necessary to surmount all obstacles in their path.

For my next step I consulted the 2010 Big Ten schedule:
Indiana vs Purdue
Iowa vs Minnesota
Michigan vs Ohio State
Michigan State vs Penn State
Northwestern vs Wisconsin
Illinois - (Open, completed Big Ten schedule the week prior against Northwestern.)
The question remains Who does Nebraska get as their End of Season Rival ? For me Wisconsin gets the nod, there is poetic justice in a stadium filled with a Sea of Red.
Matching Illinois & Northwestern as in State Rivals
All things considered, an East-West alignment emerges
East: Purdue, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State & Penn State.
West: Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota & Nebraska
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Upon Further Analysis||
Realistically even 462 seems pretty Ponderous,
If each school is paired to its Most Valued
Opponent, the Conundrum is more palatable.
The Problem is then described as a Conference
of 6 pairs divided into Divisions of 3 pairs each.
The above formula reveals only 20 unique sets &
just 10 ways for the Conference to be configured.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Complimentary Pairs||
Kudos on your Math M&B Wahoo,
I had to google my noodle to see how you got
that answer, which I believe to be correct.
Using this formula to achieve that result.
I believe we can reduce the number by half as each
unique set of 6 has a paired opposite as a compliment.
Which is to say that there are 462 ways that the
Conference could be divided into Divisions of 6 each.
That should simplify the ensuing analysis considerably.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Just Asking||
How many ways are there to divide a 12 team Conference into two 6 team divisions ?
Also if you play every team in your own division once & 3 games from the other division each year that would make 8 games in Conference with 4 games remaining for non-Conference play. So even if Minnesota was in the other division the Brown Jug could still be contested every other year.
