Coach Cook is kind of an asshole. When he recruited me it was all "I use advanced stats to determine the most successful and likely repeatable offensive scheme," and "my only annoying trait is I rely too heavily on kitten pictures." Now that I am on the team , though, its like
IN WHAT WORLD IS THAT GUY NOT LINED UP OVER YOU? IN WHAT WORLD DOES KYLE KALIS HAVE THE FAINTEST PRAYER OF BLOCKING THAT GUY WITHOUT A SCOOP? THIS IS GAME FOUR AND IF YOU'RE STILL MAKING ENORMOUS, OBVIOUS MISTAKES LIKE THAT ON THE STRETCH WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BEING THE SMALLEST DUDE ON THE LINE, YOU'RE NEARING YOUR EXPIRATION DATE.

It is less about the "inexcusable audacity to demand respect while being non-white" considering the target list includes the "Flying Arrows" and the "Hatchets". Rather it is more about control. It is always about control. Ostensibly it is about control of the interpretation of over 500 years of interaction between the settlers who came since 1492, and the settlers who came before. Really though it is about controlling to ensure that race relations in this country are always viewed thru the lens of identity politics so the demagogues will always be relevant.
Attempting to solve significant problems of consequence is very difficult, that is why people would rather devote their time to things like this.

How do you guaratee that your parents do not end up wanting to go to the funeral of your fake dead girlfriend? A girl they know from phone coversations, yet have never met? You say she died at the same time as your real grandmother. The parents can't be in both places.
The deadspin story says that the grandmother died after a long illness. I would guess Teo made up the car accident story right around the time the family thought the grandmother was going to die. Then grandma pulls thru and so does the GF. But now you can't say the GF got into another car accident, so you make up a cancer diagnosis and wait for grandma to pass.

"Play like your fake girlfriend died today"
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Now that you mention this||
This makes the beard story the likely culprit:
He makes up a girlfriend to get his parents off his back in 2009
He has her die at the same time as his grandmother to ensure that his parents don't go to her funeral
His parents never get the chance to meet her at senior day in November because she died
Remember his family "talked to her on the phone" so either they are all liars or Teo had to cover up something he couldn't let out
Sorry no periods
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Hmmm||
Three scenarios I see
1 - He and this other dude invented the hoax to help him gain sympathy and therefore Heisman support
2 - He came up with a beard story and it spun out of control
3 - He truly was catfished, figured it out, and created the death story as cover
The problem with the last two is why kill her off? Why not just say it ended and move on? Also, in all three scenarios he is in on the lie at least partially. Therefore I think he was in on it the whole time. Now he will feign being a victim so as to not have to admit he was a liar.

Brian started the "Sheridan = death" meme. Proclaiming "Goats" is in the same vein. Brian is human but there is a line between calling out mistakes on individual plays by individual players and stepping into ad hominem territory. Considering the Sheridan example, this is even more egregious since the attacks on the player were obviously an exercise in overlooking the shortcomings of the paid professionals and instead focusing on the shortcomings of the amateur student athletes.
Perhaps instead of "Heroes" and "Goats" it should be "Extra Dessert" and "Extra Laps".

|3 years 46 weeks ago||Shane Morris Varsity Jacket Censorship||
Ace - why did you (or Upchurch) blurr out the cross country patch on the varsity jacket?
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Good train of thought||
I had done an algorithmic college football ranking system that Massey published on his site. I didn't do it this year because too busy but did in years past. I call it MARS - minimally adjusted reduced score. When I was coming up with it I had the same problem regarding garbage scores - how do you credit a team for dominating a game without crediting them with running up the score? My first inclination was the scoreboard compliment to your Victory Time stat. I used the score at the last lead change. So for Minnesota 2011 it would have been 6-0 Michigan (PAT is a discrete score itself as a miss can decide a game). For Minnesota this year it would have been 13-7 Michigan. No scoring after that score altered the outcome of the game. The problem was it is very difficult to go back in every game and manually follow the score to find the last lead change. I would assume it would be equally as difficult finding the moment in game time when it occured.
The solution I came up with is this - what is the lowest winning score possible, assume everything after that is garbage. Using percent of score you get the following:
The lowest winning score possible in football is 2-0. That zero is problematic so we will assume that the game starts at a 1-1 tie. So then the lowest winning score becomes 3-1. 75% seems high though. In the other major sports 1-0 wins are possible (never going to happen in basketball but the theory remains) as their unit of score is one point. If those games start at 1-1 ties, then the lowest winning score is 2-1 where percent score is (2/3) or ~67%. Since football has a few units of score and the smallest is two points, let us assume that the game starts at a 2-2 tie, with the lowest winning score then becoming 4-2, and the percent score at (4/6) or ~67% which is in line with the other sports. So then the minimally adjusted reduced score meant that the percent score of the victor was capped at (2/3). Any scoring where the victor accrued higher percentage than (2/3) was thrown out.
Then by definition close games are where the victor does not at least double the opponent's score.

Denard hurt his left phantom phalange because the staff needed to evaluate Bellomy in a real game situatin other than fourth quarter. Or was it just lucky that Denard's injury happened when we were already in field goal range to go up two scores against a team that we held scoreless? (That is when it happened, yes?) I said much the same thing in the RR years when Denard would go down and Tate would come in. No doubt some of those instances were legit, but it is also good cover to make a QB change without starting any controversy. Here it was more about repping the guy who will be (maybe) THE guy next season and may need to be THE guy if god forbid something real does happen. I am more concerned about Lewan.

Based on that halfback pass the game plan was to rout the opponent like Minnesota last year. In front of Touchdown Jesus. Though against Minnesota, Denard had already scored three touchdowns.
The only fault on Borges was being too eager with that thing. He should have had points on the board first. As far as the interceptions, an OC should be able to rely on his senior quarterback. The last chance of the game was DR's fumble. Mattison and the defense were stout throughout, and ND basically looked horrible.
The last time ND went undefeated against the B1G? 2002.
On the bright side the defense looked good and the offense will probably not repeat that performance again this year. The B1G beckons.

but it was turning into the rule book. The answers to your questions are "not many", "yes", and "yes". The defense can more or less tackle anybody in the neutral zone or behind the line of scrimmage. The only limits are the aggression penalties - unsportsmanlike conduct, roughing the passer, after the play, etc. There are some special considerations for the defense engaging receivers but they only apply past the line of scrimmage. The check and balance here is that if defensive players waste their time tackling guys other than the ball carrier, they won't be defensive players for long.

to both of you. You are correct. The fourth scenario has an A and B version where, in A, one team is locked in and the other is locked out. This would be the functional equivalent to somewhere between my first two scenarios. Four B has one team locked in and the other playing to get in - this is the only scenario where both versions of the game have increased meaning assuming the team needing to win The Game #1 does so. I think the risk of my scenario 3 isn't worth the reward of scenario 4B. Imagine if Hoke and Urban establish a new ten year war and we get up to 20 instances of the game, yet only haf of them mean anything and the ones that did were all played in Indiana.

from the beginning. The thing I kept coming back to is if JOPA and the AD simply were interested in winning football games and Sando helped you do that then maybe you could understand the twisted logic necessary for them to cover him. the thing is he wasn't helping anybody win football games since 1998 or whenever. Yet everybody gave the guy access and nobody asked questions. The DA disappears. His laptop disappears. Spanier or whoever gets a job in "national security" after the scandal. The school hires Freeh, head of FBI/insider to do the investigation. The thing stinks horribly. If they ever find the truth there will be politicians involved. Yet there it was, unexplained, laying on the floor next to my side of the bed.
She gave me a very angry look. I kind of laughed again and said that I really had no idea - I had never seen it before.

I'm fairly serious. Why wouldn't they list the 2011 Gator Bowl? Presumably every other bowl is listed. I am fairly certain it happened. So then, what were the terms for the parting of RR and DB and is there more to the story about the coaching staff not getting the rings. I'll admit it isn't the best conspiracy, but there are no coincidences. Maybe it is just gamesmanship on RR's part?

Perhaps it was a hoax or perhaps the allegations were so damning that the system could not let them go forward. Remember, the cops at PSU closed their case against Sandusky in 98/99. The ADA went missing in 2005. His laptop was found months later without the hard drive.

Yesterday, I was having a conversation with a friend on wether or not JOPA should retire. We began discussing the whole of the situation and a question came up - It seems the PSU insiders were protecting Sandusky - why? Why wouldn't you just let the creep reap what he had sewn? I mentioned that one possibility was he was using his charity to provide boys for people of power and influence. This was before I knew of the most recent updates alleging exactly that. Look up the Franklin child prostitution ring. I fear this story isn't over and in time it will lead to a very cold dark pit of hell.

|4 years 51 weeks ago||Thanks||
For all the comments - positive and negative. I was not taking a side so much as trying to lay out an argument for seeing not the fans but the student athletes as customers. I just want to make one final point as kind of a follow up to Drenasu and anyone else who likened student athletes to employees - Dave Brandon cannot pay the student athletes. I think this is a very subtle point. Acquiring talent in college football really doesn't compare to anything else (maybe college basketball). If Goldman Sachs wants to get good talent they can pay more than the competition. If they want to reward a certain team member they can give him a better bonus. If they decide they want to focus on commercial real estate at the expense of their commodities desk, they can arrange salaries accordingly. If the athletic department wants to go after running backs at the expense of receivers, they can't give the backs a better scholarship and the widouts less. Because student athletes aren't employees, DB then has to make sure he has done everything within reason, and Pop Evil unfortunately is within reason, to be able to compete with other schools for talent.
Finally, Proclus made two good points. First it is correct that while the fan money may not go from UM to Ohio, it may go from UM to the Red Wings. I would argue though that while you have lost some revenue, ultimatey you didn't lose the fan. Not in the same way people will say they will never buy a (insert auto company here) car again after a bad car experience.
Your second point about the athleitc department being there to serve and cater to the student athletes was also dead on and I was going to make a similar point in the OP. There is a possibility that the original quote was in this context - not that a student athlete is a "customer" i the business sense, but that the athletic department is there to serve the student athletes as if they were customers.

I was kind of trying to be polite and low key by saying RR simply underachieved. You are absolutely right in your assessment. Brady Hoke is kind of the walking intangible. If he and his staff are getting these kids to believe in themselves and their team then that might be a very powerful thing. Many members here would want to piss on the whole "Brady Hoke gets it" line of thinking, but there is undeniable truth to it.
The current coaching staff seems to be basically everything the previous staff wasn't.
|5 years 1 day ago||drinking every drop of koolaid||
Don't call him dickrod - that's just stupid. Even calling him an asshole is better than that. Anyway the sentiment is correct. The more success this team has the more it proves that RR and his staff simply underachieved. Mattison > possibly every defensive coordinator we have had in the modern era. With some exceptions, these are the sam defensive players we had last year - a year older and healthier - but he is getting so much more out of those players. Borges is a tinkerer who happens to have the most potent offensive weapon in college football. Granted he was dealt a full house, but based on what I have seen I think he can take his offense to a very good place where every threat can be maximixed.
As for Hoke - he has an even temperment, he deflects criticism onto himself, and his explicitly stated priorities are:
This is a recipe for very good things. The only question was how soon? I believe we are seeing the answer and I believe we will exorcise many demons this year.
|5 years 1 week ago||Last Questions||
5-During the last few Carr years, there was much speculation that he was on the way out soon - his announcement should not have been a surprise. Yet the coaching seach seemed haphazard. Did Martin have any kind of transition plan to speak of? Was it executed during the coaching search? Was there internal strife regarding the plan? Does Dave Brandon have a transition plan now?
6-The relationship between RR and John Beilein, both coming from WVU and then at UM together, nver seemed anything but strained or even non-existant - what was that relationship really like? Did Beilein ever "go to bat" for RR?
|5 years 1 week ago||Yeah I knew about the Bo||
Yeah I knew about the Bo - Nehlen - RR connection. Is your statement
[Nehlen] told RR what a great place Michigan was and that's why RR was able to walk away from WVU whe Michigan came calling
A fact or conjecture? I can't recall seeing any evidence or stories that RR had some kind of well developed positive opinion of UM prior to taking the job.
Also Bo-Moeller-Hoke is closely equivalent to Bo-Nehlen-RR except for two things. One, Hoke worked here. Two, Hoke says he has had a well developed positive opinion of UM for his whole life. Kind of like how Meyer supposedly had the buyout clause for OSU, UM, and ND. Without any direct (or even indirect?) connection to UM/UM football, Meyer still has a well developed positive opinion about Michigan.
|5 years 1 week ago||Q's||
1-Prior to being contacted by the UM AD, did Rich Rodriguez have any kind of opinions regarding the state of Michigan, the University of Michigan, or UofM football? What were those opinions?
2-Did Bill Martin and RR have any kind of an agreement regarding on-field expectations in the first few years? What did RR expect? What did Martin expect? Did RR receive some kind of "ok" to lose in year one?
3-When Brandon was hired did he give RR any kind of ultimatum regarding on field progress?
4-When RR did the Groban thing, was he somehow trying to force the athletic department to terminate his employment? Would he have welcomed that result at that time?

Yesterday was Christmas Eve. Today is Christmas morning. Though you know you have to wait and go to grandma and grandpa's to open your presents. You will get there at 3:30 EDT.
I had the same feeling three years ago. I was out to breakfast before the Utah game. I told my buddy that we would see things from the offense that we could not currently conceive. Two years later, that inconceivable offense eventually took the field and it was a juggernaut. By conventional metrics it was very good, by advanced metrics it was a world-beater, by the scoreboard it could not generate enough points to compensate for a defense that existed in the same way that you could call any group of eleven people a “defense”. Also, GERG.
If one were to sum up Lloyd Carr’s career at Michigan in a single sentence, one would need two sentences. The first would be “Losing two stupid games in September is only ameliorated by the record against top ten opponents.” The second is “If both Jim Tressel and USC never existed, one would only need a single sentence.” And so like Bo, the tragic flaws of Carr were his struggles in the Rose Bowl and his lack of undefeatedness. Also, The Horror.
At the end of Carr’s tenure, the program found itself at a crossroads. The time had come for a change. Most Michigan fans knew what was needed. It would be difficult, but necessary. What was needed was to take the 40 years of football foundation laid by Bo, to take the player development of Mo, to take the leadership of Carr, to keep all of that and to not lose anymore. Enter Rich Rodriguez.
The 2008 season was the bad sign under which the RR era was born. Brian has held the position that another win or two would not have made any difference in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps this is true. I do think however that there may have been great difference between a three win season and a more than three win season. Utah, Purdue, Toledo, and Northwestern were all “coulda-shoulda” type winnable games. Even if one was to acknowledge Utah had a special season, and that the honorable thing to do would be to give back the Wisconsin game, a 5-7 record is nowhere near the historical embarrassment that a 3-9 record is. With five wins the Michigan football establishment merely thinks “this is troubling”. Whereas with three wins the establishment thought “My God he has steered the ship onto the shoals! Sick upon him a dying newspaper! Stretching? I do not care the charge!”
Now that is all in the past and we would do well to forget about it except insofar as to learn from it. What have we learned? We have learned that what is needed is to take the 40 years of football foundation laid by Bo, to take the player development of Mo, to take the leadership of Carr, to keep all of that and to not lose anymore.
Godspeed Brady Hoke. Go Blue!
|5 years 5 weeks ago||Q: Coach Jackson||
Q: Coach Jackson what are your impressions so far of Brady Hoke as Head Coach?
A: Let me tell you – and we have had some tremendous coaches here. Brady brings a love of Michigan, a passion. So in that sense he is like Bo, but more passionate. He will show more emotion on the sidelines than Bo ever did. Brady has that determination – a stubborn determination. I would say more stubborn than Lloyd Carr. He is approachable though almost like Rich Rodriguez only folksier. More down to earth.
I can say I wouldn’t want any other coach on my sideline. And he has had an incredible camp – just an amazing camp. I would say he is as good as any coach in the Big Ten right now, maybe even the country.

OSU should get the death penalty, but all parties will agree to reasonable terms. OSU is too big to fail. The hypocrisy of the NCAA has made it this way. As for Tressel - I see two paths. Either he never coaches again, or he never beats Michigan again.
|5 years 26 weeks ago||Schools barter, bowls exploit||
Athletes and their schools actually have a somewhat level trade - the student gets a "free" ride and the school gets "free" talent. The value of each side of the barter can be questioned, but the barter exists and is not coerced. Where the barter breaks down is the postseason at the third party level - the NCAA itself, the bowl commissions, the stadiums, all the ancilliary stuff - how are those finances garnered? Did the bowls barter anythig to the players for the free talent that fills the seats? The networks give money to these other parties, the networks get money from ads, the ads exist because the players fill the seats for free. This is where student athletes should be compensated - for their funding the bowls. This would solve the Title IX problem since it wouldn't be the schools on the hook. That being said the schools should give all scholarship players some kind of small stipend.

Unless my history is wrong DB and Miles played together. That and Miles having been this pseudo dark horse this time and last lead me to believe he is either candidate number one, or not in consideration.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see an NFL name at the end of all of this.
|5 years 38 weeks ago||I do not supervise 120||
I do not supervise 120 people, but anybody with any business acumen understands the precepts you put forth. There could be an element of the buyout here - if RR was fired on the fourth or fifth day of the year then immediately his replacement is announced, RR and his legal team could easily argue that those events imply the ultimate decision to fire was made prior to the new year. That being said I tend to agree with the line of thinking that says DB had the Harbaugh lined up and as per The Big Lead it fell apart over the weekend. DB didn't really have a plan B yet we all know the decision was made regardless. That may imply that RR was given some opportunity to save his own job that he refused, or it means that DB simply decided that the risk was worth the reward and the time to move on was now for better or worse.
In the press conference, DB played down the idea of an interim coach and hiring a coordinator. What I have learned from Bo to Mo to Lloyd versus RR starting from zero and again the new regime (presumably) starting from zero is that continuity in invaluable. I would have rather seen Magee promoted to at least interim head coach than to suffer the humiliation of another search where prospects for success seem to dwindle every day.
DB could still have some sort of ace up his sleeve and ultimately the success or failure of any decision here will depend almost solely on the results on the field.

Any coach can leave any time they want for any reason. If he leaves to be treated better then aren't all parties better off by default? If RR goes 10-2 this year then bolts we lost a career .500 coach. Somebody can write pages about if the cupboard was left bare or not.
If he goes undefeated the next three years and bolts then we have won three national championships and we lose a career .746 coach. Carr was .753.
My only real worry is RR losing to both Illinois and Purdue for the third year in a row.

Missouri, Nebraska, Pitt, and Rutgers make sense. Rutgers barely. Syracuse is just a warm body to ensure an even number of teams. I doubt that the Big Ten, with their first strike, would add an odd number of teams unless Notre Dame is included in the additions. The phantom Notre Dame spot has been kept open for almost 20 years, why close it now for Syracuse?
Taking Pitt and Rutgers puts enough pressure on the Big East and ND. Plus the real victim here is the Big XII who will implode once this happens and the SEC gets the Horns and the Aggies and possible more. Then the Pac Ten will take their turn at that carcass and we will probably be left with a choice between Kansas, Syrause, whoever else is still out there, and the "final" offer to ND to join or die.

As far as I can tell on this board, there are true believers, there are heretics, and there are agnostics. I am an agnostic. I am not trying to argue that he should be out, I am trying to argue that it is very hard to find positives so far. I think that that is pretty self evident and also the reason for so much rancor. What to the true believers are explanations quickly become excuses to everybody else.
You are correct with what your analogy implies - to improve scoring offense they first must improve X, Y, and Z, and there are instances where they have. I bet that you would agree though that that is small consolation and that it wouldn't matter at all had they beat Illinois and Purdue.
Let me ask you this. In the rematches, the defense has gone from 42 ppg to 34 ppg - an improvement. The offense has gone from 23 ppg to 23 ppg - static. What does that mean to you?
|6 years 46 weeks ago||There is no defensive regression||
Against FBS teams scoring defense is unchanged. Against the Big Ten, and the Big Ten + ND, scoring defense has a slight improvement. In rematch games so far, the defense shows a dramatic improvement, while the offense remained unchanged. Actually in rematches, GERG is doing better than RR/Magee.
