Date Title Body
PEE WEE

b/c IF he and BWC can both get more fit and PEE WEE can learn the schemes, the combo of those two up the middle has the potential to be sick.  Even if not, I'm not anxious to see where Pipkins starts out and how the coaches talk about him as a predictor for future dominance.

Payton is likely the silent commit.

We had two commits on the night of the Notre Dame game.  Dymonte Thomas and a silent.

Community college vs. 4-yrs at U-M

Certainly there is no secret material at a top university that cannot be potentially accessed at other places, such as JUCO, but there is absolutely a competitive difference when it comes to the job market and competitive graduate schools.  Your entire record will be combed over fairly easily when you have only 4-yrs after high school on your CV .  And if test scores, recommendations, publications, GPA, etc. are similar, the student who spend 4 full years at U-M or other very good school will be viewed much more favorably than one who transferred in.

Too funny.

Just voted.  He's up to 48% vs. 28% for the little shit from ND.  There's actually no way on God's Green Earth that Kovacs is tops SS in D1, but he may just win b/c we're such an addicited fan base.  Love it.

Surprised Biggs hasn't been tapped yet.

Surprised Biggs hasn't been tapped  yet.  I think we have a very good chance at having like 5-10 All-Americans by winter.

It's a FB...

...from Salt Lake City.  No big name and not Wormley.  I think whoever drops next DE-wise is gonna make the next guy pull the trigger in about 2 sec...definitely gonna be the committing-in-pairs thing .  Pipkins needs to stop dragging his feet too.

Mario doesn't look all that skinny either in that pic.

I keep hoping he can put on enough weight to be effective at DE...though I suppose there is the cance that he ends up as outside LB.

Wow. Nice pull on a Cali kid.

From what he says about Funk it sure sounds like we have a staff that has some SERIOUS recruiting gravitas, on top of what we can offer recruits with regard to UM's academics, Big house, etc.  I am sooooo anxious for fall to get here!!  I know these guys can coach too not just recruit, but I don't think any of us knows for sure what our ceiling will be on the field this season.

The recruting so far on the defensive side of the ball

...has been, ahem...impressive.  I am anxious to see the O-recruiting keep pace.  Gunner Kiel would be huge, but so far the disparity is certainly staring us in the face.  Of course for this year the needs are bigger on defense, but I hope when all is said and done with this class that we are somewhat balanced talent-wise on both sides in the 2012 class.  (Shane Morris certainly +1 for the offense in '13).  Course we won our last nat'l championship with a sweet D and a modest offense.

My main complaint about Brian's commentaries...

is that they are much too negative and cynical by and large.  And too much obsession w/ granular data.

Trieu is posting over on Scout...

... "this could be another really good week for Michigan" type thread.  No details though about when, which side of the ball, one or more possible commits, etc.  Pretty soft but it has panned out to be a commit recently when he has said this.  T-rich is being exceptionally coy for whatever reason.  I am more anxious to be honest at this point about WR and DT than anything else.

Agree. MSU blogs consider Burbridge practically a lock.

Agree.  MSU blogs consider Burbridge practically a lock.

I know right?

When Trieu tweets "don't go far" michigan fans that should damn well mean a commit!  It may still be though and we have to be patient until maybe family is contacted, etc. Who knows.  If we weren't all so addicted to M football and recruiting at this time of year we wouldn't have this problem.

According to Scout...

"...Michigan is doing very well with both of them."  "Both reported having very positive visits." A comment after talking with Burbridge and Ojemudia this afternoon after their visits.  No mention of a commit.  "Full report to follow" on their site.

Nice long post about Golden, Hoke, etc.

I read a nice informative post from a college coach on GBMW the other day relating some anectodal stuff he heard talking to some southern college coaches at a national clinic recently.  From what I remember, the most talked about thing according to him was what a great hire Miami made.  Golden apparently has a reputation among other coaches as squeezing all he can out of kids and being a superb motivator.  Hoke was talked about as probably the next most sig hire.  Mattison was described as a "game changer".  The question mark apparently that these coaches were talking about was how effective was Borges going to be using Denard. FWIW.

This is so sweet.

Either Ojemudia or both he and Burbridge must have just committed right?  MSU fanbase is going to go absolutely ballistic over this.

Dunn's reaction was very blah.

According to what I've read behind several paywalls.  Almost like he was disappointed that he had to even be up in A2 b/c of the Ohio issues and pending sanctions.  We'll see.

Hoke addressed this question early on...

during a presser on nat'l signing day. FWIW he thought at that time, w/o of course having the benefit of spring practice, etc that either DB or LB would be the most likely positions for possilbe freshmen impact.  Wile, as others have mentioned, esp based on what we have heard about the kicking game from spring, seems like the best chance to crack the starting lineup.  Other than Wile, I'd go with Countess - but on special teams rather than in the secondary for now.

Rivals set to announce

Their Top 100 on Monday, Top 250 on Tuesday.

The coaching staff is reportedly targeting 22

According to something I read behind a paywall recently from someone close to the staff.  Seems like the above analysis pretty reasonable.  Whenever we go through this and use numbers like 17 or 18 I think we're probably not being all that accurate.

Edit: Analysis from UM hero that is.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if he was a Pro bowler one day.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if he was a Pro bowler one day.

MSU is toast.

Hopefully and likely starting this year.  But if not, by 2012 I would expect that we lose to Sparty MAYBE once every 8-10 yrs.  Seriously.  we're gonna start crushing them in recruiting every year and they just do not have the rep to go national and don't have the coaching talent Hoke has put together.

True enough

You gotta think if Ross or Rippy or any other LB is seriously interested, then they're gonna be on the phone to Hoke or Mattison soon.  And we may indeed see another (likely the last if not full arlready) LB commit this coming week or even this weekend.  It's hard to remember almost that only like 5 weeks ago we had nobody committed.  We're closing in on half full!

Love the way he interviews too.

Seems like a future team leader with football background in his family, smart kid, passionate.  Love the "Mattison effect" mentioned above.  We should keep that.  Now gimme some Ondre Pipkins and Noah Spence, if you please!!!!!!

A WR also supposedly leaving.

DJ Williamson according to Scout.  RS FR I guess buried on the depth chart and bummed about it.  Understandable.

thought some might find this interesting

...and unfortunately can't start a post yet. Back to Wayne Morgan!

Would Tressel getting fired perk anyone up?

I have a senior partner in my group who is a very loyal OSU alum and very close to some higher ups in the OSU administration, big donor, etc.  He tells me Tressel is about to be fired, and no he's not just jerking my chain.  I don't now if that means in the next couple weeks or months, but I don't think it's much of a stretch anymore to believe that it's true, especially after some of the comments in Gene Smith's recent presser and of course the recent revelations about the disclosure to Sarniak.

Urban Meyer was house hunting in the Columbus suburbs recently also according to my partner, but has not yet pulled the trigger on a place.  This speculation about Meyer was rampant about a month ago but I could not find anything recently online about it.  I know this sounds like pure speculation, blah blah blah, but believe me the source is moderately close to the situation, though admittedly not in the inner circle himself.  Stay tuned.

Nice logic...

Read new post " A modest proposal" on the board.

When you click on a link that says a decision is "close"...

...you're kind of hoping for some news sooner than summer, eh?

It would be nice to get some bigger TE's too.

At least for the power run game  and pass protection.  Funchess and Thompson are hands guys and on the small side for now anyway.  I think after looking over a recent offer list for TE's they may be the smallest two dudes we have offered at the position.

Love hearing directly from our recruits...

...and of course getting scoop on commits, etc.  But.   A narrowing down of the list by summertime is not close.  Tomorrow's anouncement from Zeke Pike.  Now that's close.  BTW, I surfed some Auburn blog sites today and they sure seem convinced from their inside guys, rivals guys that follow Auburn etc. that he is going to be playing in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

406 posts on this tired topic?

Really?  Hmmmmm.

This is very positive and a smart move.

One of the major assets we have a UM grads is indeed the large alumni network, if we choose to tap into through local alumni assocations etc.  Will there be a large football specifici component here?  Of course, and what I mean by that is that the benefits of doing this and hopefully really getting football alumni fired up about their connection to UM and calling on their loyalty, can range from helping mentor a young football kid, to just being a resource for questions about the program, to actively steering young kids our way.  But how about the advantage that some kids might see in the networking for jobs for the many players (most) who don't make it into the NFL?  And of course getting more and more ex-players, coaches, managers, etc to Ann Arbor on a more regular basis so the kids on the team and recruits get to really feel what it means to have such a huge nation-wide family that they are truly a part of?  This is as much Dave Brandon IMO as Hoke, but Hoke is up to the task I believe.  Brandon has more clout thouhg as AD, alum and player under Bo if you ask me.  Brandon is very very shrewd.

Biggs I think would feel some pressure

just from the RJS commit though I doubt the staff would be heavy about it.  They may only want 3 not 4.

It is a defensive player.

It is a defensive player per Tom Beaver on Scout.

Blake Countess on returns

If remember right from his highlight reel Countess had a lot of sweet sweet punt returns.  He is shifty and fast in the open field.  Rivals lists him as a 4.48 40.

3:30 EST supposedly will be the Urban Meyer segment on UM

3:30 EST supposedly will be the Urban Meyer segment on UM today.

YEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

ND has all those big players, so many guys headed to the NHL, best team in the country, second highest scoring team.....U-M.  Thank you very much.

OT: Danny O'Brien seen on campus

Tom Beaver from Scout is reporting that O'Brien was seen today on campus in Schembechler Hall.

I'd forgotten how fast

Shaw is in the open field.  He played so little towards the end of last year.  His biggest issue has been staying healthy in my mind.  I always liked him better than Vincent Smith.

Maty Mauk

Mauk, also a 4-star and #5 QB, does not list U-M as one of his favorites on Scout.  Don't know that we really have a good shot at him but I thought that was interesting.

Love the stars

Love the star ratings even though we all know it's just a measure of potential, and mainly "measurable" potential.  Intangibles often make the difference over time.  But now we have even more data to kick around, and I am licking my chops over what the next 6 mos holds.  I was stoked to see Thompson and Funchess so high in the TE list..did not realize although the film I watched on them from the Michigan camp a few weeks ago was sweet.  Wonder if either will make it up to 5-star status.  Can't stand the thought of Peat at NE.  That guy is going to absolutely dominate.   Pike may be the key to the class b/c he sounds like he wants to try to be very active in recruiting big names to whatever school he chooses, and would I bet be able to reel in at least several 5-stars to go along w/  him once he decides.  It would be fun to watch that unfold if it was U-M.

100% agree

...that if we land Pike early we are headed for a top 10 class. His interview on Scout was pretty encouraging too. I want him right now more than any other recruit hands down.

they're fine with it b/c of the sensationalism...

...in the content but now they can have their cake and eat it too.  No more high visibility for Rose on the network, ratings are in the bag.  He's gone.

I bet he's gone by next week.

Way to much negative press after the Uncle Tom, Christian Laettner's a p*ssy, etc. "documentary."  The DUI is ESPN's perfect out.

...at what point you become too tall...

I was actually wondering at what point you become too tall to get effective leverage on the line?  6'9" seems like you'd have a hard time getting low enough but I never played the position and am a far cry from 6'9".  Thoughts?

You lie in the bed you make.

Jalen is hosed.  I think his overall reputation took a HUGE turn for the worse nationally after the airing of the Fab 5 documentary - and now this.  I was a senior during the Fab 5's freshman year, and was actually in the locker room with the players during the tourney selections show march '92 (working for the university).  The documentary he did could have been so much better and so much more positive than it was.  I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying his broadcasting career will slowly spiral down to become nonexistent in a few years.  Over time, that documentary will end up doing much much more damage than good to memory of the Fab 5 yrs as people look back on it say 10 or 20 yrs from now.

braden broke the seal and now...

...we have two.  I think we're gonna see 2-4 more commits before the end of spring practice.  Next up is either Ron Thompson or Matt Godin.

Rich Rod as an offensive coordinator

Rich Rod as an offensive coordinator makes any team scary right off the bat if they have any talent at all, especially speed.  If he becomes OK's OC, and they recruit for him on that side of the ball for a couple years...yikes.  Mack Brown is pissing his pants right now.
