You're the one who's not getting it.
|13 hours 2 min ago||Again, you are really||
Again, you are really over-reaching and twisting my words. What do ethnic names have to do with names like Rumer, Apple, Marvcus, etc? And how can you tell anything about my level of culture and whether I've read Freakonomics by one post or a few comments?
|16 hours 25 sec ago||Don't mind being attacked...||
...but do mind the over-analyzing, over-reaching and conclusion-jumping that is going on.
Based on what you're saying...if I had used examples like Moon Unit, Rumer, Apple, etc. instead of Marvcus and Plaxico in the original post, we wouldn't be having anyone accusing me of being racist/elitist?
What if I had indicated in the original post that I'm black? Would that have made a difference? I'm sure there are many black people who think Marvcus and Plaxico are nonsensical names.
Why did everyone initially assume that I'm white and thus my post is coded/racist?
What if I had indicated that I'm black and had used only "white" names as examples of made-up names? Would I have been accused of being racist?
These are all serious questions, many of which people of all races are afraid of confronting...but the type of which need to be asked and answered...and discussed in a serious way if our country is serious about addressing racism and racial issues.
BTW...thank you for your respectful tone. And Keyden is one example of the goofy names. Many others in this thread have bemoned the "-eyden, -adyn, -ayden" names.
|18 hours 44 min ago||How is this "coded?"||
The majority of the people who are responding to my OP are taking it in the spirit in which it was intended.
But there are a few of you who are indicating that the post is "coded" or "racist."
Please explain to me how this is the case.
Black people or other minorities surely have not cornered the market on odd names. Just in the realm of the celebrity world...Moon Unit, Apple, Rumer. I believe their parents are white. These names make no more (or less) sense to me than Marvcus (a former linebacker for the Buffalo Bills).
I am Jewish and find myself reading the birth announcements in the Detroit Jewish News and wondering how the parents of these babies came up with their names.
Other than my nephew, I don't know any black Jewish people...so all of these people are white.
Call the OP a reflection of a boorish or elitist attitude (which I don't believe it is), but there's nothing racist about it.

All valid points but I believe that winning will bring back the fans. I live only 45 minutes from the Big House but still wavered many times over the past six years when the renewal notice arrived. Held on to my tix and now glad I did so.

I'm not really sure but I've been trying not to call attention to it as my prodigious number of mgopoints turns on 1991 UM GRAD and thus has been very good for my sex life.

A quick Google search, however, reveals that he's actually a full year older than my son, so I don't feel so bad about him not yet having an offer from Coach Harbaugh.
Plus, I'm sure that my son will grow a full foot in the next year and become athletically gifted.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||I'd recommend...||
...you talk to Dr. Roger Lauer. He is a neuropsychologist in Ann Arbor. Came highly recomended. Our son is entering 9th grade this fall and was diagnosed with ADD in 4th grade. He was doing well academically until this year. With high school looming, we decided to invest some time and money in to having a full evaluation. The report from Dr. Lauer confirmed much of what we had been seeing and suspected, but he put together an action plan to help get our son back on track.
His evaluation will identify ADD, learning disabilites, anxiety, depression, etc.
It's worth the time and financial investment if you can swing it.
As for some background, our son was previously getting all A's, except for a B in advanced math. My wife and I are both Michigan grads and live in Birmingham.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Which school?||
Wow. That's a lot of kids.
I'm interested to know which school your son is attending, if you're willing to share.
Our son is starting at Seaholm in Birmingham in the fall...and my wife and I just came from a meeting there to discuss his class placements.
The counselor indicated that they freely move kids up and down within the math track. Maybe you should consider moving him back a notch...and he'll do better...which will help his confidence...and then move him back up?
Seaholm only has about 350 kids per grade.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||You're generalizing...||
I understand your point about peer groups, but you can't generalize an entire school. Every school has kids who are motivated and ambitious...even in schools filled with a lot of "provincial" families.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||You are completely||
You are completely misunderstanding cause and effect. The kids at these schools are future leaders because their parents are current leaders. The schools aren't doing anything unique to prepare them. It's self-selecting. Wealthy successful people are more likely to have wealthy successful children. And these are the people who live in areas with good schools and/or send their kids to elite private schools.
