|4 days 19 hours ago||Great to see him contribute this year||
I walked past him in the concourse after one of the games at the Palace last March. Despite the fact that Michigan had won the game, he looked so bummed. I also found it odd that he was walking by himself in the concourse so shortly after the game had ended.
Kudos to him for sticking it out at Michigan. Not that I wanted Mitch to go down, but maybe it was J-Mo's karmic reward for staying at Michigan...when he easily could've bailed.
And he's put up a great performance this year, leading us to the outright Big Ten title.
|4 days 19 hours ago||Wonderful||
What a great tribute to J-Mo, who definitely has earned all of the cliches like "cornerstone of the program" and "brought us back to respectability" etc.

You eloquently encapsulated my thoughts re: the news of the last week.
Could Hoke's moves be defined as "desperation?"
Perhaps, but sometimes "desperation" is a good thing.
Making drastic (and educated) changes to things that aren't working is a good thing.
You can make a strong argument for all of the changes...and point to all of them as having a positive impact.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Respect||
We are getting it. We are the top-ranked seven-loss team in the country and ranked ahead of many other major conference teams with fewer losses. Based on our season so far, #16 seems about right.

With ten minutes left to go in the game, it appears as though Kenpom was off on this one. Ace, it's time for you to start coming up with your own predictions and stop relying on Kenpom.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||No simple answer||
There's no simple answer to the questions you are asking, as each situation is different.
Picking a major isn't as big of a decision as picking where you are going to go play football for four (or five) years.
Each child matures at a different rate. Some 15 year olds are able to make mature decisions...while keeping in mind the long-term ramifications of these decisions. Conversely, my 42 year old sister in law isn't - and never has been - capable of intelligently making these types of decisions.
You're trying to paint with a broad brush here...asking broad questions...when the reality is that there is no one answer.
Each person is different...each circumstance is different...and the ramifications of any decision can vary from minor to life-changing.
Choosing where to play football for four/five years is a life-changing decision. If mom has a legitimate concern about her son playing football at School X, hell yes she should jump in and prevent her son from making a decision that could negatively affect the rest of his life in a significant way.
Choosing a major, while somewhat life-changing, is not nearly in the same league....
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Bad parenting?||
You're kidding, right?
A parent has many obligations...one of which is to ensure their children make smart decisions.
If my child wanted to go play football at a school, but I felt that the school was wrong for him....hell, yes, I would prevent him from doing so.
We obviously have no idea what happened at MSU, but if I was told that School X football players don't need to "play school"...or that my son had friends who were bad influences who were going to be at School X...or that there was a toxic culture there...or that there was rampant drug use or drinking at the School X football team...or whatever...I would absolutely step in and prevent him from playing at School X.
As a parent, doing this is my right, my obligation and my duty.
Not to sound too much like a "get off my lawn-er," but I think we can all imagine the negative results of letting a child (and, yes, an 18 year old is still a child) make all of their own choices.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||I'm the parent||

|8 weeks 6 days ago||$1,400 over 50 years...||
...is about $30 per year...assuming you live to be 72 or so...so not such a bad deal for a lifetime membership.
There are large groups who come to Michiganian and just have one alumnus in the group...so this may be an effort to control this issue.
There is a waiting list for every week other than weeks 1 and 11.
|9 weeks 54 min ago||Lifetime Membership||
Not sure how much it is now but my wife and I did it in out late 20's. I'm sure it's much less expensive than renewing it annually and for those of us who are disorganized eliminates the chance of a lapsed membership.

Hoke seems like a great guy and is obviously a true Michigan Man. And a very good recruiter and leader. But, Harbaugh is probably better equipped to keep us at an elite level. Is a year or two of tumult worth it for the long term benefit of having Harbaugh? I'm thinking it is.

I didn't say it would be easy or even possible to trade Smith. Just stating my preference for Moose.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Draft Status?||
Was that really the reason he stayed in school...to improve his draft status? Without checking and just going off of my admittedly faulty memory, wasn't he projected as a top-five/ten pick last year?
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Rather trade Smith||
I'd rather they trade Smith than Monroe. I don't think he's ever going to cut down on the chucking and become a more efficient player. My feeling is that he's likely to lose as many games for you as he's going to win for you. Monroe and Drummond are an ideal combination of power and finesse.

I sit in section 44, up in the higher rows...and the folks in our area tend to stand only when there's a big play happening.
You might also look for seats just above the upper entrances to the sections. You'd have no one sitting in front of you.
|21 weeks 4 days ago||I agree||
There are a number of reasons why many of us feel this way.
We are in our seventh consecutive year of our team being unpredictable and inconsistent.
This feels a bit like a throw-away year because those of us who follow the team closely have been talking about 2014 and 2015 being the breakout years.
Plus a lot if us thought this team, while not being elite, would look stronger than it has thus far.
It's frustration, malaise, and impatience melded together.
I will also admit to harboring bitterness in regards to the lack of upperclass talent on this team...as a result of the efforts of the previous coaching staff.

Family friend's Bar Mitzvah this weekend. I will ask the rabbi to pray for both lines and for a reduction in turnovers. 11 total hours of festivities on Fri-Sat-Sun.
|24 weeks 1 day ago||Just to add...||
...I'm not putting all of the turnovers on DG, by the way.
Clearly, the OL and WR issues/inexperience are contributing to the problem.
|24 weeks 1 day ago||Well, I will comment on the last chart...||
...which clearly shows that turnover margin is the #1 issue affecting the team's performance. We're in the middle of the pack (which still isn't great) in almost all of the other metrics.
Moving us up to middle of the pack (tied for #4?) in turnover margin makes the Akron and UConn games comfortable victories...and probably also improves our performance in each of the other areas.
I'm not knowledgable enough to know why DG is having the issues he's having...but clearly they need to be cleaned up.
|24 weeks 2 days ago||Interestingly, for me...||
...the loss to Louisville didn't sting so much. I was there with my 11 year old son. We had a great time, and the team exceeded my expectations.

|28 weeks 1 day ago||Michigania: Cliff Notes Version||
Approximately 400 people attend each one-week session, of which there are 11.
Mostly families. A few older couples who've been going for 40+ years. Many groups made up of three generations.
Most cabins have three "suites," with each "suite" accommodating one family. The "suite" consists of a master bedroom, a bathroom, and a room with two bunk beds for the kids. Each cabin has a living room/common area.
The accommodations are much like sleep-away camp...but a bit nicer.
There are organized activities for the kids in between meals...much like a day camp. So, you have breakfast, drop your kids off, and then go do what you want until lunch...and then the cycle repeats after lunch and before dinner.
Many adults choose to sit in a chair and let their mind wander. Others take advantage of the myriad of activities...boating, swimming, riflery, arts & crafts, tennis, rock polishing, high ropes, horse back riding, etc.
We've been going with the same two families for eight years; all of our kids are around the same ages. Others use it as a family trip...with grandparents, their adult kids, and the grandkids.
Food is good and tremendously plentiful.
I'd recommend Camp Michigania to anyone...especially those with younger children.
The "Michigan" element is not overbearing, so it's fine if you've "intermarried" a non-Wolverine. As long as there's one member of the AAUM in your family/group, you are qualified to go.
|28 weeks 3 days ago||Thus my hesitance to post...||
I hesitated to post this, but I'm hoping that many of the MGoBloggers will enjoy it...and that those who may have negative feelings will refrain from posting and keep their thoughts to themselves.
Bottom line is that Coach Carr is a HOF coach who brought us a national championship and five Big Ten titles...and was involved with the program for 25+ years. It was an honor to hear him speak, be able to ask him some questions, and have him take a picture with my son.

|30 weeks 1 day ago||Stroller Parking/Young Kids||
Call Brian at Hoover Street Auto and ask him if you can park your stroller there during the game. This is as close as you can get to the Big House without being in University parking. Hoover is the street that the band and most of the students use to walk to the game. We've been parking there since our kids were born...to facilitate a short walk to the stadium. He has about 30 cars that park there...and he always has someone there to let you in or out.
As for your kids, it sounds as though you have it covered. We've been taking our kids since our son (our oldest, now 11) was a baby. You just have to be prepared to leave early and/or take the kids on walks around the stadium during the game; the walks give them a needed break from the noise/heat/chaos of being in the stands. We've found that keeping them well fed and hydrated also helps.
As for activities, I'll echo the Hands-On Museum and the other museums. Walking around Main Street and Kerrytown. Diag and South U are also musts. As for food, Pizza House is the easiest with kids.

|36 weeks 5 days ago||Good synopsis...||
The core of the 2004 championship team was aging. Contending for or winning another championship wasn't going to happen.
The Chauncey-AI trade was a hail mary that didn't work. But, given that the team was no longer a contender, it was worth it to take a gamble.
The biggest strategic error has been Joe's effort to maintain a somewhat competitive team...instead of letting the team decline more quickly...which could've led to a quicker rebound.
|36 weeks 5 days ago||Had the same thought...||
Been a Pistons and Michigan fan since the mid-'70's, so I've seen my share of ups and downs for both teams...and would've loved to have seen Trey in a Pistons uniform.
That being said, there isn't anyone on the roster who can shoot or create his own shot. The Pistons desperately need scoring, and Pope appears to be have the potential to do so. So, we've gone from the Palace Prince to the Palace Pope.
Pistons fans also need to give Knight more of a chance. Chauncey Billups wasn't exactly lighting the league on fire during his first five years. Conley, Lawson, Holiday and other PG's took three or four years to turn in to the stars they appear to be/becoming.
I've also tired of the Dumars bashing. First of all, can we just put the Darko thing to rest? He was the consensus #2 in the draft. Denver would've selected him had we passed on him.
Secondly, Dumars has shown an aptitude for spotting talent. I'm not going to take the time to look it up or create a chart, but I'm guessing he's had as many late first round and second round picks become successful as any other GM over the past ten years.
Has he made some mistakes?
Absolutely. His early free agent signings were strong, but Gordon and Chuckie V were certainly epic failures.
The coaching carousel has also been an issue. That being said, getting rid of Carlisle and Brown were Davidson's decisions, not Joe's. And, he was hamstrung for many years after Bill Davidson's passing..in terms of how much he could spend on hiring a coach.
Finally, we need to remember that every team goes through painful years of rebuilding. It happened to the Lakers and the Celtics over the past ten years...and now it's happening to the Pistons. The fact is, though, that the Pistons' track record of success over the past ten years is probably only equalled/exceeded by fewer than a handful of teams. We've had it pretty good.
I think Joe deserves a chance to show what he can do under a consistent, supportive ownership team.
|36 weeks 6 days ago||Trey vs. Zeke||
As a life-long Pistons and MBB fan (since the mid-'70's), I can tell you that this is not an apt comparison.
Trey Burke ranks as one of my top-five most favorite Michigan hoops players, but there is no chance that he has a career like Zeke's....regardless of the similarity of their college stats.

I'm also 50/50 on whether Caris is sleeping or checking out his phone. I used to work with someone who regularly fell asleep at his desk. I called him out on it a few times, and the response was always the same..."I wasn't sleeping. I was looking at my phone." His best "sleeping at the desk" position was when he fell asleep and the only thing keeping him upright in his chair was that he had his teeth balanced on the top of a water bottle. ...returns from a three-day business (or so she says) trip, so I'll be looking to get some alone/quite time...as part of my recovery from being a single parent for three days.
The recovery should include a few ciders.
Rest of the weekend will be filled with old married guy stuff...kids' soccer games, Birmingham Art Fair, hosting of Mother's Day festivities, etc. Although, we're taking the easy route for Mother's Day and bringing in a deli tray. We'll have some leftovers, so feel free to stop by!

Brutal review in the Wall Street Journal this morning.
I'll be interested to hear the reviews of non-critics...
|43 weeks 5 days ago||Jealous...||
...of your stories. Much like my story re: getting engaged, my "getting in to Michigan" story is pretty lame.
I applied only to Michigan, knowing I'd get in. Sometime in the fall of my senior year in high school, the large envelope arrived.
In retrospect, applying to only one school was - of course - a naive and over-confident choice. Almost thirty years later, I'm still surprised that my parents never forced me to develop a back-up plan.
There was, however, no way this Michigan Man would've attended school in East Lansing. Maybe Wayne State? Fortunately, I never had to think about it.

On a related note, the 1989 UM Grad family is bringing home two kittens today! I will be happy to provide you with pictures to use in future diaries.

Why don't you want the media to make him out to be a hero?
There have been probably tens of thousands of gay professional athletes that have come before him...and he's the first to publicly acknowledge his sexuality while still playing the game.
You could debate whether he is a "hero," but we should all applaud his courage and willingness to risk his career.

My focus has been off since we beat Florida.

I don't know if any of you were at the exhibition game for which Trey was suspended, but Spike played most of the game and looked really good. 16 pts and 6 assists IIRC. He will be more than capable at PG if Walton isn't ready to start next year.

|49 weeks 22 hours ago||$3||
StubHub had tickets for $3 for Sunday's game...as of Saturday night. Even the best tickets were going for under $100. Assuming this was Kansas fans dumping their tickets and scalpers being left in a low-demand environment.
I'm hoping the same thing holds true for next Monday...assuming we're still playing.
Caveats of paperless ticketing, more excitement for a championship game than a regional final, etc.

|49 weeks 2 days ago||All of this "which was better" stuff...||
...is difficult for me.
You can't compare one great U of M happening to another.
Kansas vs. UTL
Today's FL win vs. Capitol One Bowl
Denard vs. Burke
Fab Five vs. Fresh Five
I have great memories of all of them...as well as every major U of M football and basketball accomplishment since the mid '70's (was born in '67 and both parents are UM grads so it's been in my blood since I was a young lad).
Why can't we just enjoy all of them for what they are...without having to compare/contrast or decide which was "better?"
(sorry if this is too much of a "get off of my lawn" speech...but I guess I'm getting a bit tired of the "which is better" discussions...which seem to be proliferating lately)

Just did the Wall Street Journal blind bracket and picked VCU to beat Michigan.
I also ended up with a final four made up of all the #1 seeds.
I do have some good news to report, however. My 9 year old daughter filled out her bracket last night...and she has both Michigan State and Ohio State losing in the round of 64. When I explained that there is almost no chance that either team will lose and that it would hurt her chances of winning the pool in which we participate, she said that she didn't care...and that she always roots against both teams. She's clearly being raised the right way. I'm filled with nachas!
|51 weeks 1 hour ago||Great stuff...||
It must be very difficult to keep your "fandom" bottled up while sitting among the other members of the press. There have been at least a handful of "I can't believe he did that" Trey Burke-inspired outbursts involuntarily emanating from me in just about every game this season.
My son is 11, and he and I have missed very few football and basketball games over the past few years. It appears as though both Trey Burke and Denard Robinson have created the same feelings of wonder and awe that you felt for Michael Jordan. He loves to tell me about the moves he makes while playing basketball...that are "just like Trey Burke."
Ace, this is the kind of writing that makes this blog one of my only daily reads. Thanks!

The whole post was meant to be sarcastic, but then it took a turn for the worse when the OP fixed his mistake.
The multiple errors in the post were done on purpose. The whole they're their there thing - as well as using an ' in plural words - has become a bit of a running commentary on the board.
I'll put my tail between my legs for my ill-fated attempt at humor. This also proves that the joke isn't funny if you have to explain it.

|1 year 3 weeks ago||Defense was driving me crazy||
I think the people sitting near me during the game must've thought I was watching a different game.
Everyone is cheering and getting excited and I was sitting there like we were down by 20 throughout the entire game.
Not a satisfying performance...and, like everyone has mentioned, the defense is going to be a huge issue if we don't find a solution (and we need to find one if if J-Mo can't play).
|1 year 3 weeks ago||Top Five||
The reality is that we're likely to be back in the top five a week from now...given how the season has gone thus far.
I haven't looked at the schedules of all of the top six teams, but it's likely that at least two of them will lose or have a shaky victory that bumps them back a few spots.
We clearly need to win out, though, to have a shot at the Big Ten title and at ending the season in the top five. I don't see how we can lose another game and end up in the top five at the end of the season.

Yes, it's sad that 18-22 year old kids should have to apologize for their performance. They definitely shouldn't be held to the same standard as those who are getting paid to play.
But, it's a credit to him for making the statement...and taking responsibility for what was, at best, a very flat performance by the team. I'm sure Coach B is holding them accountable for their lack of effort...and maybe THJ felt the need to make a public statement as a way of motivating his teammates.
That being said, I still think that this team has the ability to make some noise in March (and maybe in April?!?).

"Inane" is in my post three times.
I was actually a little disappointed with myself for using that word more than once in the same post. I typically take pride in my extensive reservoir of synonyms.
Please feel free to select a word from the below list and use it to replace the last two appearances of the word "inane" in my post.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||No.||
"If you don't like it, don't click on it and comment."
This is an on-going but erroneous response that posters make in response to the complaints of other posters.
I am entitled to express my displeasure about this thread, just as much as someone else is entitled to respond substantively to it.
When you don't like something, you can either do nothing or do something. In this case, I am choosing to do something. Maybe if enough people complain about inane threads, they will cease to exist.
The more inane threads that are posted, the more likely it is that interesting threads are moved off of the MGoBoard thread list on the home page.
So, there is a negative impact of these types of threads.
I'd also point out that it's telling that your OP has no upvotes...only downvotes.
(yes, I realize this is just a sports blog, and I don't take it as seriously as it appears by my above comments, but it doesn't mean that I can't be annoyed by these inane/pointless topics)
