Oddly, I knew three of them...James Gartenberg, Steve Goldstein, and Mark Zeplin.

So many sad and inspiring stories to come out of that day.

The way you are spelling "neighbour" leads me to believe that your neighbor's grandson is Canadian...which would explain his choice of MSU over Michigan.
In an effort to offset my snarky and gratuitous comment, I will add that I'm not buying the parents' approach. I'm sure the grandson could've found some new buddies on a campus of 40,000 people.
And this doesn't take in to account the many other elements that make U of M a better overall experience than MSU...the city of Ann Arbor, the prestige, the history, the campus, the sports programs, the diversity, the opportunities, etc.

"Even when we felt like the game was out of reach we continued to play hard which is a great sign because in the past we’ve not come out the way we needed to against teams we felt we’re better than and that was great, that was the mentality we brought to the game and we did a great job.”
Really don't have to do much reading between the lines when you review quotes from players like DG, Clark, T-Rich, etc...about last year's team.
And while I know a lot of the folks on this board put this on the coaching staff, I think it's more an indictment of the leadership within the team. A coach - like a teacher or a parent or a CEO - can only do so much. Ultimately, leadership is most effective when it comes from within the organization...not from up above.

Looks like just under one-third of the team's shots were three-pointers. How does this compare to the last two years?

If we had been even 9-4 last year I think we would've held on to the players who decommitted and we would've won some of the other head-to-head recruiting battles...resulting in this year's class being even higher ranked...and next year's class looking even better than it already is...
|10 weeks 1 day ago||Height/Weight Difference||
There is some validity to this.
Not sure how many 4's in the Big Ten, though, were really that much bigger than GRIII. Jordan Morgan was one of the smaller 5's in the Big Ten...and held his own.
Zack Novak was a lot smaller...and he seemed to be giving a full effort on both ends of the court...and his senior year, when he spent the most time playing at the 4, was also his best offensively at U of M.
Again, not saying GRIII didn't contribute or work hard. It still just feels like we never saw his best effort.
I dunno, maybe he's just so smooth that he doesn't look like he's working that hard...or maybe he's just more of a passive player...
It just seems that, given his athleticism and the sporadic moments of greatness, we should've seen a more consistent output from GRIII...

|10 weeks 1 day ago||RE: GRIII out of position||
I still don't buy this complaint from GRIII (if it was indeed a significant issue to him).
My understanding of the Beilein system is that the 2/3/4 are almost interchangeable.
How did playing the 4 keep GRIII from making more of an impact and/or showcasing his skills? There were many times when he got the ball and he could've made a move...or driven to the basket...etc...but he hardly ever did so. He had opportunities to create but rarely did so.
Yes, he seemed to be humble and hard-working...and a good teammate...and he certainly contributed to the team's success.
I just don't buy the excuse that playing the 4 kept him from reaching his full potential...
Still left with the feeling that he could've worked on ball handling and creating his own opportunities over the summer...and then been a focus of the team's offense in '14-'15...and positioned himself as a solid first round pick next year.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||What coulda been...||
Holy shit...the 15-foot jumper...the rebounding...running the floor...passing....etc.
We would've been back in the Final Four with him at full strength this past year.
As historically efficient as our offense was, imagine it with his shooting, passing and PNR skills out there.
And this is not to take anything away from JMo's leadership and effort...but McGary's skills are just at a whole different level.
I'm sure it's been discussed somewhere, but does anyone have any insight as to whether McGary being forced to go pro is what precipitated GRIII's decision?

|14 weeks 3 days ago||A Michigan football ticket is a product||
Is it a unique product? Does it have a passionate and connected consumer base? Does it have a strong brand?
|14 weeks 4 days ago||Disagree on winning re: affecting attendance||
Consumers purchase things based on perceived value.
Value is typically based on some sort of combination of the price and perceived quality of the product.
The problem is that prices are rising while the quality of the product (six/seven years of underperformance and mediocrity).
Thus, the perceived value of the product - Michigan football games - has decreased.
The long run effect of the decreased perceived value is that the demand for the product decreases...and thus the lack of sellouts.
If the team had been a national championship contender over the past six years, I can guarantee you that there'd still be a waiting list...regardless of the price increases.
The price of tuition at U of M has increased dramatically at U of M over the past ten years, but demand (applications) continues to increase. Why? Because the perceived value is there...so consumers (students or their parents) are willing to pay the price.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||I agree completely.||

It's easy to make the argument for either scenerio.
For every Trey Burke that came back and improved his draft status, there's a Sullinger who came back and hurt his status.
GRIII and Mitch both seemed to be 1st round locks last year...and now they came back and played (or not played) themselves in to 2nd round picks.
If Michigan is still playing in April, it'll be in large part due to GRIII stepping up. He could play himself back in to the 1st round...and, if he does, he's gone.
As for Mitch, there's gotta be a late-picking team that would take a chance on him in the latter part of the 1st round...assuming his back checks out.
|24 weeks 6 days ago||Maths||
You clearly failed math and logic classes. The reason these classes are so small is because we have very few graduating seniors in the next few years. Hoke isn't choosing to have small classes. If anything you can blame the small classes on the amount of attrition from RR's last few classes...resulting in a low number of graduating seniors in '14 and '15.
|25 weeks 1 day ago||Not getting it...||
I'm not sure why everyone is so concerned about Tennessee and has preordained us as the losing team. Yes, they are ranked highly by Kenpom and seem to be on a roll.
But, they haven't really played anyone great. As others have pointed out, they squeaked by a struggling Iowa team.
They were 11-7 in a much weaker conference than the B1G.
Their RPI rank is 40 and their BPI is 25 and they aren't ranked in the top 25 in either of the main polls.
Not saying this will be a blowout or that UM should take the game for granted, but of all the teams left in the tournament, we are getting one that is definitely in the bottom quarter of the remaining 16...and is tied for the lowest seeded team remaining.
Cumong guys. We were expected to be playing a 3 seed and we are getting an 11 seed.
Even if they are "underseeded," maybe they're like a 6 or 7 seed? Of the remaining 16 teams, are there really that many you'd rather be playing?

|26 weeks 17 hours ago||Small Sample Size Caveats||
If you take the final game records of the 2 and 3 seeds and adjust them by just one game, you'd get a totally different result....i.e., this is a very small sample size.
2 seed: 4-8 record becomes 5-7
3 seed: 4-5 record becomes 3-6
(I would figure out the winning percentages if I could find the calculator on my new Windows 8 laptop)
So, good analysis by you. I just wouldn't put too much stock in the final game win percentages...given that one game would swing the percentages dramatically.

Kudos to him for sticking it out at Michigan. Not that I wanted Mitch to go down, but maybe it was J-Mo's karmic reward for staying at Michigan...when he easily could've bailed.

|32 weeks 16 hours ago||No simple answer||
There's no simple answer to the questions you are asking, as each situation is different.
Picking a major isn't as big of a decision as picking where you are going to go play football for four (or five) years.
Each child matures at a different rate. Some 15 year olds are able to make mature decisions...while keeping in mind the long-term ramifications of these decisions. Conversely, my 42 year old sister in law isn't - and never has been - capable of intelligently making these types of decisions.
You're trying to paint with a broad brush here...asking broad questions...when the reality is that there is no one answer.
Each person is different...each circumstance is different...and the ramifications of any decision can vary from minor to life-changing.
Choosing where to play football for four/five years is a life-changing decision. If mom has a legitimate concern about her son playing football at School X, hell yes she should jump in and prevent her son from making a decision that could negatively affect the rest of his life in a significant way.
Choosing a major, while somewhat life-changing, is not nearly in the same league....
|32 weeks 16 hours ago||Bad parenting?||
You're kidding, right?
A parent has many obligations...one of which is to ensure their children make smart decisions.
If my child wanted to go play football at a school, but I felt that the school was wrong for him....hell, yes, I would prevent him from doing so.
We obviously have no idea what happened at MSU, but if I was told that School X football players don't need to "play school"...or that my son had friends who were bad influences who were going to be at School X...or that there was a toxic culture there...or that there was rampant drug use or drinking at the School X football team...or whatever...I would absolutely step in and prevent him from playing at School X.
As a parent, doing this is my right, my obligation and my duty.
Not to sound too much like a "get off my lawn-er," but I think we can all imagine the negative results of letting a child (and, yes, an 18 year old is still a child) make all of their own choices.
|32 weeks 18 hours ago||I'm the parent||
of two Tweens and if I had a serious concern about a crucial decision they were about to make I would certainly exert my parental right and duty to get them to change that decision.
|32 weeks 1 day ago||Fax machine||
I will be sitting by mine all day.
|32 weeks 4 days ago||No need to duck||
My post obviously went way way over you're head. I hope you seen what I did their.
|32 weeks 4 days ago||I||
could care less that your so upset about the grammar mistake's that people make on are favorite web sight.
|33 weeks 22 hours ago||Again||
you are proving my point. You are reading a lot in to my post. Which is a reflection on you. Not me.
|33 weeks 22 hours ago||The fact that you think||
it's sketchy is more a reflection on you then it is on me. And I'm not sure how you know what "everyone" is thinking.
|33 weeks 1 day ago||Not sure how this is a||
humble brag but whatever.
|33 weeks 1 day ago||Timing is interesting||
I met someone just over two weeks ago who works in the Daily sports department. He told me the story was going to be published on 1-13. Wondering why it was delayed....
|34 weeks 5 days ago||Recruiting Skills||
Recruiting skills are just as vital as the coaching skills IMHO.
|34 weeks 6 days ago||Mindset is huge||
Lots of people get stuck in the music/culture/personal style they had in high school and college...and never evolve in these areas.
|34 weeks 6 days ago||Congrats on your grad!||
Crossing my fingers for a UM grad in 2023 and one in 2026.
|34 weeks 6 days ago||Agree Completely.||
I'm on the best shape of my life at 46. Watch what you eat. Exercise regularly. Pretty simple actually
|36 weeks 18 hours ago||$10||
Or you could take one of the other suggestions here and pay the additional $10 for one year to add your spouse to the $69 annual fee.
|36 weeks 19 hours ago||$1,400 over 50 years...||
...is about $30 per year...assuming you live to be 72 or so...so not such a bad deal for a lifetime membership.
There are large groups who come to Michiganian and just have one alumnus in the group...so this may be an effort to control this issue.
There is a waiting list for every week other than weeks 1 and 11.
|36 weeks 21 hours ago||Lifetime Membership||
Not sure how much it is now but my wife and I did it in out late 20's. I'm sure it's much less expensive than renewing it annually and for those of us who are disorganized eliminates the chance of a lapsed membership.
|36 weeks 21 hours ago||$10||
I would say the Michigania experience is worth the additional $10 investment.
|36 weeks 3 days ago||Stauskas!||
More than just a shooter...the first reference thereof. Wussed out and decided not to make the trek from Birmingham...so watching on the couch with halftime shoveling on the agenda.
|37 weeks 1 day ago||A great year...||
...wishing all of you one in 2014...personally, professionally, academically...and as a Michigan fan.
|37 weeks 1 day ago||Supino||
I'm with you on that. Best in town.

But we get eight crazy nights!
|38 weeks 4 days ago||Porsche?||
Is your car really a Porsche or did you get your Focus serviced there and left the frame on?
|38 weeks 5 days ago||I'm torn...||
Hoke seems like a great guy and is obviously a true Michigan Man. And a very good recruiter and leader. But, Harbaugh is probably better equipped to keep us at an elite level. Is a year or two of tumult worth it for the long term benefit of having Harbaugh? I'm thinking it is.
|38 weeks 5 days ago||Asshole||
|38 weeks 6 days ago||Ooooh you got me.||
So Jennings has four years and 27 games of experience.
|38 weeks 6 days ago||13-14||
When you turn over 80% of your starting lineup, you have a new coach, and only one starter with more than four years of nba experience, 13-14 is a good start to the season. Plus take into account the better play over the past few weeks...
|38 weeks 6 days ago||I agree with you||
I didn't say it would be easy or even possible to trade Smith. Just stating my preference for Moose.
|38 weeks 6 days ago||Draft Status?||
Was that really the reason he stayed in school...to improve his draft status? Without checking and just going off of my admittedly faulty memory, wasn't he projected as a top-five/ten pick last year?
|38 weeks 6 days ago||Rather trade Smith||
I'd rather they trade Smith than Monroe. I don't think he's ever going to cut down on the chucking and become a more efficient player. My feeling is that he's likely to lose as many games for you as he's going to win for you. Monroe and Drummond are an ideal combination of power and finesse.
|38 weeks 6 days ago||Kittens?||
You've been a bit lax lately with kitten pictures. Are you a dog person now?
|39 weeks 5 days ago||Purchase Agreement||
The only posbang I'm looking for today is the seller signing the purchase agreement on a piece of property I'm attempting to purchase.
|41 weeks 1 day ago||Left testicle.||
I'd give it up.
|41 weeks 2 days ago||Fortunately for us...||
...much fewer than half of our starters are graduating. Which is the primary reason for our travails this season...IMHO.
|41 weeks 6 days ago||No||
We just started parking there about five years ago. We usually arrive late so don't tailgate. Silver Arcadia usually.
|41 weeks 6 days ago||They're yours.||
Jeff, I'll call you tomorrow. Meet at 1145 on Saturday at Hoover Street Auto.
|41 weeks 6 days ago||2 tickets||
I've got two tix. Section 2. Row 16. I'll sell them to someone for $50 each. Would meet you at Hoover Street Auto at around 11:45. Was going to sell them at the game but would be happy to sell them to someone on here at a discount.

|45 weeks 5 days ago||My middle school son...||
So those comments didn't scar you for life? If I had a dollar for every time I've said that to my 7th grade son....
|45 weeks 5 days ago||Interesting perspective||
My 7th grade son has already announced that he will not attend any sporting events if he finds himself attending MSU. His best friend, who is more focused academically and seems to be on the UM track, has indicated a similar sentiment should he find himself in Ann Arbor.
|45 weeks 6 days ago||Are you being ironic...||
....by committing an egregious grammar error in a post questioning Sparty's intellect?
|46 weeks 1 day ago||The score midway thru the 2nd half?||

I'll be there with 2026 UM Grad!
|46 weeks 5 days ago||Purpotedly?||
Did you spell it that way on purpose? Spellcheck didn't catch it?
|47 weeks 6 days ago||2022||
Will be my son's senior and daughter's freshman years at Michigan.
|48 weeks 13 hours ago||Completely agree||
I don't understand why people even bother to comment if they aren't going to contribute something substantive.
|48 weeks 22 hours ago||Agree||
I sit in section 44, up in the higher rows...and the folks in our area tend to stand only when there's a big play happening.
You might also look for seats just above the upper entrances to the sections. You'd have no one sitting in front of you.
|48 weeks 5 days ago||I agree||
There are a number of reasons why many of us feel this way.
We are in our seventh consecutive year of our team being unpredictable and inconsistent.
This feels a bit like a throw-away year because those of us who follow the team closely have been talking about 2014 and 2015 being the breakout years.
Plus a lot if us thought this team, while not being elite, would look stronger than it has thus far.
It's frustration, malaise, and impatience melded together.
I will also admit to harboring bitterness in regards to the lack of upperclass talent on this team...as a result of the efforts of the previous coaching staff.
|48 weeks 5 days ago||Irregardless...||
|48 weeks 5 days ago||Seth,||
you need a do over...a nu start to your day!
|48 weeks 5 days ago||I'm a bit superstitious...||
...so I don't like that you've put this out there...even if we're all thinking it. If he sucks tomorrow it's your fault.
|48 weeks 5 days ago||32-18 Michigan||
And I can read the rules on my iPhone without glasses!
|48 weeks 6 days ago||Shut up already||
RichRod needs to stop talking about his time here....even when asked. "I'm focused on my team here in Arizona. I'm moving forward with my team here not looking at the past."
|49 weeks 1 day ago||Nooooooo!!!!||
Now I'm missing both this and the Nebraska game...as I'm on a "vacation" with the in-laws.
It's all David Brandon's fault!
|49 weeks 1 day ago||Rose||
|49 weeks 2 days ago||I'm so excited||
I could plotz!
|49 weeks 2 days ago||Reading comprehension is your friend||
Not to lash out at you but one of my ongoing pet peeves here is people reading more in to comments than what is there. It was clearly stated that the mgobloggerati would like him to be next to be offered...not that he would be.
|49 weeks 5 days ago||Columbia and Harvard...||
...continuing the "pattern" for the hoops team. It'd be interesting to see how the basketball team compares to other major programs in terms of the socioeconomic and parent status of the players.
|49 weeks 5 days ago||I'm in 44...||
...so I'm also interested to see how well it works. My 7th grade son will be especially excited about this!
|50 weeks 5 days ago||What if he prefers people to say he looks younger than his age?||
We're screwed no matter what we do.
|50 weeks 5 days ago||And...||
...you're wondering why you have a difficult time finding women? (Said light-heartedly not meanly). Enjoy your Michigan swag this weekend!
|51 weeks 18 hours ago||Upper left window.||
This is what I love about mgoblog. The random connections with other Wolverines.
|51 weeks 22 hours ago||Oy||
I honestly don't understand the rabbling about Hokes press conferences. I don't see how he owes us any additional specificity. Or that he needs to publicly rant and rave about the team and what they're doing wrong.
|51 weeks 23 hours ago||Bar Mitzvah||
Family friend's Bar Mitzvah this weekend. I will ask the rabbi to pray for both lines and for a reduction in turnovers. 11 total hours of festivities on Fri-Sat-Sun.
|51 weeks 2 days ago||Just to add...||
...I'm not putting all of the turnovers on DG, by the way.
Clearly, the OL and WR issues/inexperience are contributing to the problem.
|51 weeks 2 days ago||Well, I will comment on the last chart...||
...which clearly shows that turnover margin is the #1 issue affecting the team's performance. We're in the middle of the pack (which still isn't great) in almost all of the other metrics.
Moving us up to middle of the pack (tied for #4?) in turnover margin makes the Akron and UConn games comfortable victories...and probably also improves our performance in each of the other areas.
I'm not knowledgable enough to know why DG is having the issues he's having...but clearly they need to be cleaned up.
|51 weeks 3 days ago||Interestingly, for me...||
...the loss to Louisville didn't sting so much. I was there with my 11 year old son. We had a great time, and the team exceeded my expectations.
A few of you have alluded to the feeling of disappointment being related to the level of expectations. This may, indeed, be the case.
|51 weeks 3 days ago||Yes, 906 Greenwood||
