Man, I wish this weren't the case, but reading your comment I was thinking "yep, pretty much" to myself the whole time. It seems like our feelings (mine and yours) and the evolution/devolution of our emotional attachment over the past few years are in lockstep. Also of note, I didn't admit to myself just how negative an impact Michigan football had on me during the RR years. (I, like you, was an unabashed supporter and was, and still am, ashamed by the way he was treated by certain sections of our fan and alumni bases).
I realize that's completely absurd- to let something like your alma mater's football team have such an impact on your general mood- but, well, it happened, and my emotional withdrawal from allowing wins and losses to impact me so severely was and is a defense mechanism. As an adult, being depressed all the damn time about a football program (which you don't and never did suit up for) is an untenable situation and is ridiculous when you think about it rationally. So now, I don't get as upset, because I've built up these layers of numbness to the whole situation, which is incredibly sad to me.This is why I don't begrudge Brian (as some do around here) when he expresses similar sentiments; I not only understand them, I share them with respect to this program and how much one chooses to let the program's fates affect one's happiness.

You shut your dirty mouth. Hubba Bubba soda is delicious. Well, at least it was when I last tried it 20 years ago or so. "An entire soda of bubblegum flavor?!? Sign me up!"

Thanks Mr. Smith
Thanks, Mr. Smith, not only for your comments today (and your great attitude), but for everything you did for Michigan. My favorite group of players over the last 10 years was the Florida crew that Rich Rodriguez brought in: You, Tay Odoms, Denard, Gallon, et al. The toughness, the drive, the effort you guys displayed every play, and the attitudes you all presented to the fans and the community were wonderful and serve as an example for younger players. Just the way all of you guys blocked, for example (except Denard) demonstrates that great attitude. Blocking and effort come from mental toughness and desire, and you guys had-- and I'm sure still have-- that in spades. Best of luck to you and the whole crew. I don't think I'm alone when I say I'll be rooting for you the rest of your lives.

The story cites a single source. This could be floated either by Phillips' agent, or by U of M so they get the narrative out there about not going after simply people with Michigan ties. Either side would benefit from leaking such information.

How about the fact that Mattison makes close to a million? Like 850-900k. And we wouldn't pony up less than $300k? My God.

This, if true, is the most embarrassing thing to me to happen to Michigan football in years. Yes, worse than what happened with Shane Morris. This is absolutely classless if true.

Yes. It was either Dantonio or an MSU player that first used the phrase.

How much does DB pay you to spew this stuff? Or are you related to him in some way? The revenues DB has raised have been along the same trend the AD was headed in- see Brian's post yesterday. John U. Bacon's a relatively reliable source. Why would he make up all of this stuff- about the other coaches laughing in disbelief, about Harbaugh, about what his sources tell him- just to troll DB? Or, to put it differently, there's no evidence that I've ever seen that Bacon has an agenda against DB and puts out false information about DB. Quite the contrary.
So, it seems that because Beilein allegedly likes DB....then....DB shouldn't lose the job he is screwing up royally? I mean, wouldn't any competent AD candidate do the things from a fundraising standpoint that DB does? I guess I just don't get the myopic view of Brandon you seem to espouse with incredible vigor.

Why are people negging the crap out of the OP? He asks a valid question, and the comments indicating that the OP is on to something/it's a consideration in response aren't getting negged to oblivion. Perhaps I'm missing something(?). As of this writing, it's -13 to +2 in voting. Doesn't make a lot of sense, to say the least. The OP poses an interesting and valid question and one which is ripe for discussion in light of what happened with RR at a minimum.

Hell of a piece. I feel like my fandom has grown and evolved as yours has over the years (similar ages; similar formative memories; similar views, generally on the program), and this blog has served as the lense through which I often view the source of that fandom. Hats off, and hang in there. It's going to be another wild ride this season.

Oh, I didn't know we were talking about who's "made more money." See, I (and others here, I imagine) thought we were talking about how the Athletic Director of our nonprofit University was doing at his job. I couldn't care less how much money DB made for Bain Capital and Domino's. I DO care (and I think I speak for most of the board) about his performance as AD, which is a different job, and is in fact the one he currently holds.
TL;DR: Sweet red herring, Added a lot.

I think this is headed for SCOTUS. 9th Circuit will give the players more, I feel, and SCOTUS will take the writ the NCAA will likely file after.

I'm a litigator. . . not jaded, and certainly not a "sullen carcass of a human being." Sure seems like that comment says more about you than any one of the millions of attorneys across the country on which you express your opinion.
Glad you found a new calling. For all of us, you included.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||No, they should only settle||
No, they should only settle as a business decision. The rationale you propose here is so wrong for so many reasons. I advise/represent clients in situations like this, and my standard m.o. is that when someone has a claim that's b.s. legally (which this one really is), I tell my client "pay me x to defeat it, but what you should really do is pay less than x to get them to go away; if they won't take less than x, then we just defeat them, but don't pay more than you're going to pay me to defeat this claim in settlign it, since, again, it's a b.s. legal claim."
Whether or not Shaq and Trey should "feel bad" is a completely different discussion. What they shouldn't do is allow someone to extort them, which is essentially what this is. I don't care if it's a sick kid or Mother Theresa (RIP), legal extortion is still legal extortion.

I think the cause of action is specious at best, and they're going to need to prove some key facts to assert the invasion of privacy cause of action, facts which they likely don't have and/or don't exist with respect to the "monied" defendants.
He's not seeking only $25,000.00; he is seeking in excess of $25k, the jurisdictional minimum. However, what may happen is that rather than pay lawyers to defeat the plaintiff's case via motion to dismiss or after the close of discovery via motion for summary judgment. . . they just pay the kid less than what they'd pay their lawyers and settle the matter.
TL;DR: It's a cash grab. Sucks the kid has had an unfortunate life, but that doesn't turn this into much of an actionable claim. If you have money, people sue you a lot.

Rich Rodriguez for me, too. Reasons I would assume are obvious, but perhaps not: I got to "know" him very well via following the program closely during his time here, and I like him. I think his offensive philosophies are fundamentally correct and philosophically right, and I love the way he runs his actual offense. So, I like watching his teams, and I like him as a coach/guy, and there you have it.
